Moonlit Yearnings

I dream of slowly unclothing you
Truly in body, soul, and spirit
To be one and know the intimate you
Stripping mystically bit by bit

By candlelight, on lovenest lain
Enlightened love will never wane
The light of love all through the night
Heart of romance under the moonlight

O let me kiss you and call you love!
And sing love’s longings under the moon
From here below to heaven above,
Let the stars and crickets hear my tune

O let me hold you and make you mine!
And I will love you forever more
Please believe my every word and line!
For you alone are whom my love for

For all men’s lies and broken promises
Of women fooled by verbal caresses
My moonlight vows will stay forever
And love you still when night is over.

^^ nice poem there!

btw, here's a poem i wrote last month.. based on personal experience... :)

---------------------------------------------------------

Eloisa

Masayang nagkukwentuhan, nagtatawanan

Makalipas ang ilang istasyon
Ilan sa kanila'y nakaupo
Ang isa pa nga'y nakatabi ko

Ngunit may isang nakapukaw sa atensyon ko
Nagpumilit makisiksik sa kolehiyalang katabi ko
Kaya agad akong tumayo at pinaupo sya

"Ay, hindi, ok lang kuya, upo lang kayo"
"Hinde, ok lang," sabi ko naman
Nakangiti kami pareho, mata'y nagtagpo

sa way kataposan nga laray
diha sa kamaisan.

Hilom kang naghuwat
sa akong tubag, ug mituktuga-ok
ang mga hiniktan ni Noy Biryo.

Unta makadungog ka sa iyagak
aning nag-inusarang banog, nga karon
nagtuyok-tuyok ubos sa dag-om.

I will try to make an English translation.

Longing

You asked me
if I am still
missing you.

I glanced outside
towards the endless rows
of cornfields.

Quietly, you waited
for my reply, and I heard
Noy Biryo's cocks crow.

If only you can hear
the cry of this lone eagle now
circling above, beneath the coming storm.

(pagsuko at pag-ibig)

pangarap at katotohanan, mag-iisa, iisa,

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways...
--Elizabeth Browning--

"Ay me! for aught that I could ever read,
Could ever hear by tale or history,
The course of true love never did run smooth."
--A Midsummer Night's Dream by W. Shakespeare--
******

i
Why do i love thee ?
The real you, could I see?
Why do I love thee?
Let me look inside me
ii
Do I love thee because of?
Do I love thee in spite of?
Only angels are seen by the former
While angels and demons, by the latter
iii
If love is not a state of mind,
But a matter of the heart
Then love can indeed be blind,
Seeing only the pretty part
iv
If to love is to be blind,
Not to love makes me see
If to love not makes me find,
The real you and me
v
Or if love does makes me see,
The real you and me
Is this not a love so true?
Still there after seeing demons in you
vi
Yes, still there after seeing demons in you
Love dives where angels dare not tiptoe
What if love’s object goes to hell?
"Fool!", sighs Reason, if love goes as well
vii
Why then do I still love thee?
If being so in love can be foolish,
Why are countless still fools for love?
That love makes fools of us all!

Mindanao production transposes poetry to theater

By Steven Patrick C. Fernandez
Philippine Daily InquirerDateFirst Posted 22:05:00 03/15/2010

‘SugaTula’ was the exercise that allowed words to jump off the page onto the stage
THE INVITATION FOR the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (Ipag), resident company of the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, to represent Mindanao in the 4th iTanghal: National University and College Theater Festival, posed another opportunity for us to perform a production that was not the usual.

Through 33 years, Ipag has blended a theater that draws from immersions in North-Central Mindanao mixed with the currents of the region’s dance, music, literature and the visual arts. It scoops from both the indigenous and colonial banks.

Ipag presented a multimedia “SugaTula”—not the usual beginning-middle-end narrative. In fact, “SugaTula” was not a play at all, in the strict sense, but a collection of eight poems transplanted into performance.

This transplantation from one medium to another we call “transcreation.”

The outcome was more than what we expected: The performed poems drew two large audiences into the realm of the word.

Facets of lifestyles

The eight poems illustrated themes that revealed facets of Visayan and Mindanaon lifestyles.

We chose the poems through their variety and the moods they presented. The choice of using these poems was based on a bias: Poets of Manila and Cebu had the better chances of being known because they had the more numerous opportunities for publication and networking.

Not surprisingly, our Mindanao writers are unknown even to our readers because books here never carry our writers’ works or their names.

The production was a chance to portray Mindanao, in a sober light. Mindanao has too often conjured stock images of blood, Ampatuans, and clan war. The impression is unfair to the majority who live as normal Filipinos do.

The poems tackle such “normal” subjects as a poet’s angst, death, desire, love, homosexuality. Of course, there will always be a sprinkling of lumad and “exotica,” of lore and legend, and of ritual and prayer—all Mindanao mainstays.

“SugaTula” was the exercise that allowed words to jump off the page onto the stage. The production allowed us the venue to test how effective the magic of poetry can also become the magic of the stage.

Poems are “transcreated” to dance, music, chants and images—mediums that congeal a transfigured form to capture the original intent, insight and expressive content of the poem. This cross-media production explores the emotive power of the word in poetry as poetry is performed in another form.

In the crossroads of poetry and performance (thus, the Cebuano term sugat), the production brought to our audiences the exhilarating experiences of the poems of Christine Godinez-Ortega, Anthony Tan, Ralph Semino Galan, German Gervacio and Marjorie Evasco.

Popular attention

Much of our work of three decades have been transcreations as we have discovered epics, legends and lore from the founts of our cultural absorptions among the Muslims, lumads and settlers.

Our work in the theater has drawn popular attention to regional materials, particularly those produced by home-bred writers. Ipag plans to continue with the transcreation of more poems as we address the larger output of Bisaya (Waray, Hiligaynon, Cebuano) and indigenous poetry.

Local color, the provincial lifestyle, the tribesmen’s world, and violence under the faiths are only some of the subjects our poets’ writings deal with.

The process attempts to capture and freeze the evocative qualities of the poems. It draws out the literal and figurative meanings of the poems and their abstract and ethereal significances that are reshaped palpable to an audience.

The parameters a reader uses to study poems—persona, mood, tone, rhythm, music, theme—have complements in performance. These parameters in performance evoke the same emotive effects the original poems have on their readers.

Audience participation

The production made liberal use of projected digital images woven by short film clips, images, text projected between segments and between vignettes, and sounds. An actor, through his annotation, tied the segments and guided the audience to stay within the reinterpretation of the poems. Performers in the vignettes also annotated parts.

The production opened the participation of the audiences who interacted (thus, breaking the fourth wall) with the performance and the performers.

After each show, the featured poets and the performers engaged the audience in conversation. The poets talked about their poetry, poetics and creative process.

Enjoying poetry in different forms brought our audiences back to the power of the word. Feedback was that poetry pierced an impression on our mostly young audiences (majority of them students). Most treated poetry as an esoteric undertaking, a separate reality from the mundane and an idea that was only applicable in the classroom.

To the theater makers of Ipag, “SugaTula” was the most effective way our audiences got themselves acquainted with our writers and their works. To appreciate poetry, our audiences required an endearing experience as magical as the theater.

The author is artistic director of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild of Mindanao.

sa puno ng nagsusulputan

na naikubli sa dahon,

sa isang salitang sapilitan

Been a while. These are very new poems and very raw and yet unedited. Lol.

Sakura

Sakura blossoms are lovely
when they are bright pink
on a fine spring day
and like cotton candies
spun around dark branches.

Or on wet pavements,
after an early morning
spring rain, becoming
rivers of pink,
one now falling
and barely making ripples
on that puddle there.

But sakura are loveliest
on a dark windy day
when spring is ending
And we sit here in the car,
looking on opposite panes.

Inside, it is calm,
outside, the petals
are swirling around us.

When the gust comes
I feel a tightness in my gut
as if the train sped on
and i missed getting off
on the right station.

Oh if only there was a way
of talking to flowers,
I want to tell them:
"Cling on to your branches!
Please, hold tight!

With universal language and accent
Reveal unwittingly what you most hide,
Those blushing shame are lovers' overt guide
Love's pretty follies give polar miracles
Hiding when seen, creating spectacles
Breaking barriers while building a wall
You reach untold heights when in love, you fall.

Wishing to perch on her blooming flower
And play with the fragrant petals that float
Breathing the virtues her gardens scatter
Perfuming his world with Love’s summer youth;
Of colored dreams and springtime endurance
Though Love’s lifetime journey is never smooth,
Love’s desire is ageless exuberance
Love’s deepest expression, her petals drenched
Bird and flower in reclining tango
Swaying with Love’s music and songs that quench:
A dual snug in serpentine solo
-----The Lusts of Love are pregnant paradise
-----As the Loves of Lust are all barren lies.

A bulls-eye, sad clue

I miss you on the spot
A hit from distant shot

Being lost for a week
Solitude is finding
Your nearness I must seek

Francisco Baltazar (Balagtas)

1 Kung pagsaulan kong basahin sa isip
ang nangakaraang araw ng pag-ibig,
may mahahagilap kayang natititik
liban na kay Celiang namugad sa dibdib?

2 Yaong Celiang laging pinanganganiban,
baka makalimot sa pag-iibigan
ang ikinalubog niring kapalaran
sa lubhang malalim na karalitaan.

3 Makaligtaan ko kayang di basahin
nagdaang panahon ng suyuan namin,
kaniyang pagsintang ginugol sa akin
at pinuhunan kong pagod at hilahil?

4 Lumipas ang araw na lubhang matamis
at walang natira kundi ang pag-ibig,
tapat na pagsuyong lalagi sa dibdib,
hanggang sa libingan bangkay ko’y maidlip.

5 Ngayong namamanglaw sa pangungulila
ang ginagawa kong pang-aliw sa dusa,
nagdaang panaho’y inaalaala,
sa iyong larawa’y ninitang ginhawa.

6 Sa larawang guhit ng sintang pinsel
kusang inilimbag sa puso’t panimdim,
nag-iisang sanlang naiwan sa akin
at di mananakaw magpahanggang libing.

7 Ang kaluluwa ko’y kusang dumdalaw
sa langsanga’t nayong iyong niyapakan,
sa ilog Beata’t Hilom na mababaw
yaring aking puso’y laging lumiligaw.

8 Di mamakailang mupo ang panimdim
sa puno ng manggang naraanan natin,
sa nagbiting bungang ibig mong pitasin,
ang ulilang sinta’y aking inaaliw.

9 Ang katauhan ko’y kusang nagtatalik
sa buntung-hininga nang ikaw’y may sakit,
himutok ko noo’y inaaring Langit,
Paraiso naman ang may tulong silid.

10 Liniligawan ko ang iyong larawan
sa Makating ilog na kinalalagyan,
binabakas ko rin sa masayang do’ngan,
yapak ng paa mo sa batong tuntungan.

11 Nagbabalik mandi’t parang hinahanap
dito ang panahong masayang lumipas,
na kung maliligo’y sa tubig aagap
nang hindi abutin ng tabsing sa dagat.

12 Parang naririnig ang lagi mong wika:
“tatlong araw na di nagtatanaw tama,”
at sinasagot ko ng sabing may tuwa,
“sa isang katao’y marami ang handa.”

13 Ano pa nga’t walang di masisiyasat
ang pag-iisip ko sa tuwang lumipas,
sa kagugunita, luha’y lalagaslas,
sabay ang taghoy kong “O, nasawing palad!”

14 Nasaan si Celiang ligaya ng dibdib?
ang suyuan nami’y bakit di lumawig?
nahan ang panahon isa niyang titig
ang siyang buhay ko, kaluluwa’t langit?

15 Bakit baga noong kami’t maghiwalay

tanggapin mo nawa kahit walang lasap,
nagbuhat sa puso ng lingkod na tapat.

19 Kung kasadlakan man ng pula’t pag-ayop,
tubo ko’y dakila sa puhunang pagod,
kung binabasa mo’y isa mang himutok
ay alalahanin yaring naghahandog.

20 Masasayang nimfas sa lawa ng Bai,
sirenas ang tinig ay kawili-wili,
kayo ngayo’y siyang pinipintakasi
ng lubhang mapanglaw na Musa kong imbi.

21 Ahon sa dalata’t pampang na nagligid
tonohang ng lira yaring abang awit,
na nagsasalitang buhay ma’y mapatid,
tapat na pagsinta’y hangad na lumawig.

22 Ikaw na bulaklak niring dilidili
Celiang sagisag mo’y ang M.A.R.,

Love's Boozy Blurt

I downed some bottles of beer
To bottle my drunken fear
Making life for days in daze
Drugged intentions in a maze
When all my brains left my head
Sobriety is all but dead
Delirium now says what’s true
Babbling I said, "I love you!”

Lumisan

Nangi-ngilid itong aking mga luha,
tikom ang bibig at 'di nakapagsalita,
puso ay nagugulat at hindi handa
dahil sa paglisan mong pabigla-bigla.

Walang maisip kung 'di ikaw'y pagmasdan
habang nakikita ang iyong talikuran,
bakas ng paa mo'y bahagyang naiwan
na nauukit sa kapal ng putikan.

Aywan ko ba at ikaw'y biglang lumayo?
bakas ng naiwan ay hindi matanto,
pakinggan mo yaring tinibok ng puso
baka 'di makayanan ang pagka-bigo.

Power Habitué

Your are a visage that sails and docks ships
A beauty that launches and lands air trips
A body that builds and destroys empires
An ancient love that makes or breaks desires
If you, on innocence- a misled Eve
That got, on cunning, by serpent deceived
For you I’ll still fall in a judged kingdom
Be your fallen and cursed, knowing Adam
By your Charms’ thrusts, I will become a king
Trusting you will about, my downfall bring
I will rise if I will become your slave,
An epic downfall that will haunt my grave.

"Paninimdim ng isang Bata"

Ako'y napahinto sa 'king paglilikot
at biglang nakaramdam ng sobrang pagod.
Nasok sa isip ko'y kakaibang lungkot
at hayaang ako'y mapapahimutok.

Bakit tao ay hindi pantay ang turing?
mayroong marangya at naghihirap din?
mayroong mayaman na ubod ng sakim;

mamuhay na payapa at pusong busilak;

Arekup! pasintabi sa mga nagmamasid
ako ay napalugmok sa sobrang init,

leeg ko'y nangangalay at nangangawit.

Sa nagkataong sa akin ay naawa
Hindi ko malaman kung ito ay sumpa?,
bakit mailap sa akin ang biyaya?
dahil ba sa ako'y isang maralita?

Kaya't narito subukan kong tumayo
muling manunumbalik sa pag-kakabigo,
hayaang puso ko'y dalhin sa malayo
nang maghilom ang sugat sa pagkasiphayo.

Wanted: Lady Border
***(Inquire Inside)

*

prologue:
-----------

What intimate joy to us, our woe
That which befriended we most, our foe
In love with love, not with a person,
We have rapture, not satisfaction....

....
.Wanted: lady border (inquire inside)
.My naked ego that nowadays hide?
.I need to fill that cheap, single bed space?
.In my heart's vacated, abandoned place
.Her monthly rate, a profoundly cheap rent
.She won't spend loose change of countless a cent
.This is good for one long term occupant
.Who best fills me? I'm now widely vacant!
.A permanent resident seems so scant
.Finding one, I seem to easily can't
.Just beware of all the straying dogs though
.Gossips' rabbis bite dementedly through
.Those near and around you can put you down
.Despised, you become the neighborhood clown
.Wanted A.S.A.P.: A nice lady border
.Who would occupy my heart in order
.A lady border who, when she will leave,
.Will know how to fix the mess I'll receive.
....

epilogue:
-----------

Emptied by which we constantly crave,
We seek freedom where we are a slave
Bliss, the lavish child of the moment,
True love, the wonder of contentment.

Beethoven
(excerpts)

Ill-starred not your fate to be downright deaf
You mastered the art of virtuoso clef
Your world of muted sound can clearly hear
Beyond the mind of an average ear
On earth you brought the music of heaven
There lies your greatness, much loved Beethoven.

150th Birthday Celebration

cadalso o campo abierto, combate o cruel martirio,

There is a time to take refuge
And the time to go through the storm
Faith is the ark through the deluge
The floating shelter to keep warm.

******Say "i!"
(Steve Jobs:1955-2011)

His apple dressed by my bite
Revealing things in clear light
Intimacy of knowledge
Made through artful cutting edge

He showed boundless horizon
Each time we turn his toys on
His art of cyber playground
The weightless field we are bound

Behind the highest of art
Lies a perfected science
Technology has a heart
If simple is its sequence

The world through an HD eye
Traveled with speed of digits
Holding devices named "i",
Handheld lands with blurred limits

From nearby crowds I'm alone
A world's own through my iPhone
Distance touched with my iPad
Isn't just a passing fad

The smartness of a device
Comes from visions of the wise
The complex that is Steve Jobs,
Is high tech beauty that throbs.

Little Death

The rush of Love is a little death
You feel its onslaught shortens your breath
Its charm inflicts an addicting pain
The deranged does not want to be sane
Beauteous predator to a prey’s sight
The victim begs Love to have a bite.

Young Eternal
_(For Ching)

An ivory, flawless skin
A cherubic soul within
With centerfold, glossy hair
Crowning a face, virtuous fair
She is her own pleasant sun
Shining her planets of fun
That revolve in perfect sphere
Encircling her far and near
An illuminating sight
Life’s beauty seen in her light
True beauty mocks Father Time
Constant as tic tocs that rhyme
Always young though rosy cheeks
Pale with winter’s snowy weeks
Descending with leaves of fall
In summer's reign, proud and tall
A rose in eternal spring
Is the always blooming Ching.

Love and Youth

Love and youth are inflamed affairs
Burning lovers in a fever
They both feel cold to the world’s cares
Wrapping each alone together

Love and youth are suns of high noon
A stirring heat and blinding light
Doubly darkens, unlike full moon,
Though cloaked by night, reveals the sight

Love and youth are flowers in bloom
Unlike those bloomed by weathers’ rhyme
Plucked and walled in a lonely room
Withered before appointed time

Love and youth are naively sweet
Eye-candy beauty sugared eyes
Honey-melted tongues at first meet
That melt away those sweet, young sighs

Love and youth both hide in plain view
With blushing shame and labored breaths
Young minds impaled of colors true
That leads to deliriums or deaths.

The LOVE Spectrum

Roses are more of red
A few do come in white
On passions hearts are wed
With love, for life unite

Violets are not blue,
But their own color strong
Lingers not love that’s true,
It grows old and stays young

Love is not color blind
In colors pure, lovers find
White love and throes scarlet;
Sad blues, glad violet.

Love At The Horizon

So not in favor with eyes of good looks!
Not an heir to your kind of wealth and fame
Beautified by covers of classic books,
Rustling with moral leaves is my rich claim
A husband to livelihoods that don't meet--
Monthly ends and beginnings are divorced
My disheveled life and your charmed state greet
With detached respects society enforced
Life's not in the confidence of fiction
Where a princess and slave become one heart
Transcending a hut and royal mansion
Are heights unconquered that set us apart
****I'll journey long till your stars kiss my ground
****Horizon's far where sky and earth are bound.

Hands

An old man stops
to stare at the hand
that hangs by a fence
along the railway.

When leaves start
to fall and the warmth
of the world seeps away,
they show up.

Scattered on streets,
drowning in drains, like
someone beckoning,
for your help.

Some are bent and curled
into fists, another one flat
on the pavement giving
the middle finger.

Discarded hands that
with a little imagination,
grow into bodies, into people
and their feelings.

Now, the old man smiles
wistfully, at the hand
still hanging by the rail fence,
Palm side up, wide open

As if to ask,
if such a thing could—
“where? where is the hand
that used to hold me?”.

She understands what makes a fire
She consumes its burning desire
She rains hard on blazing monster,
So urban petals will flower.

The Floating Fall

"Love makes fools of us all"
--shakespeare--

cBuJagewqRo

Cupid's arrows will pierce us all
Our hearts will bleed until we fall
In love who makes us rise so high,
On maddened joys we truly lie
While floating in an opiumed fate
So stoned with Love's addicting state!
Thriving in its being insane
We push poor Heart to usurp Brain
Ancient Cupid is still a child
Whoever he hits becomes wild
Love is a foolish childish game
That grownups play with wanting shame.
