Hello:
I am wondering about the non tourist industries of Lebanon.
What percent of Lebanon's economy is not tourist? What are her main products?
And what does Lebanon export?
And what type of system is in place? Is it like Dubai where business can do ANYTHING or is it like Iran where business is very restricted?
I appreciate any answers, shokran. :)

I think tourism accounts for something like 14% GDP...
Main movers are banking and services...
Lebanon exports jewlery, agriculture, finished good...and is a major reexport center for the region.

Actually Dubai learned a thing or two from Lebanon..alot of the industry in Dubai are headed by Lebanese..Unfortunatly Dubai benefited greatly from the civil war in Lebanon to develop..Of course the had the oil revenue to help.

Traditionaly we operate under a Laisez Fair system with minimal goverment intervention..There are no resitriction on capital conversion or how much you can bring in or out of the country...its a free market system

Thank you akhi.
What about social services?
And are the universities mostly public or private?
Is health care private or public?

Sorry for the questions

No problem..

The education system in Lebanon is probably considered the best in the region. There are scores of Universities, Colleges, and technical schools. A noted private Institution..is the world class American University of Beirut (AUB) which was built in the 1800's and set the standard in the region for quality education. There medical school is noted as well as there private hospital they operate. A degree earned here
and at the Lebanese American University (LAU) is the same as getting you degree in the U.S.. It is recognized and accredited by the New York Board. On the public side The Lebanese Universtity has a few campuses and proveds lower cost quality education. In Lebanon you can study in English, French and Arabic depending on where you study.

Health care is the same (public and private)

Knowing the current situation of our economy is very crucial. We have to be vigilant as to secure jobs. I hope for a very soon recovery from recession.

Why no Heavy İndustry in Lebanon ?

2 main reasons : 1- We lack the space, the expertise and the funding required for the development of heavy industries as well as there being a lack of the basic materials required for these industries to develop, and importing such materials would be very costly in itself let alone use it for development.

and 2- Every time we do have a heavy industry development it gets bombarded by 'israel' hence stopping growth and development and scaring away investors.

however, now things are starting to get better and Lebanon's industry is becoming more and more advanced and environmentally friendly, hopefully something in the near future will arise when the natural oil and gas reserves will be cultivated.
