quite a bit of harshness about the top of this tower.....imo it is one of the best "pyramid topped" towers in the world.....then because the top is "empty" it's a cheater in height..........just rediculous.......i think that the fact that the top is empty makes it look lighter and less offensive. The building is clad in a very interesting color scheme that works well making it classy and elegant. 9

High rise #2 of those we watched rise from the architorture studios at Georgia Tech.

Sadly, Kevin Roche was forced into a few compromises by the bank on this one. The original base was bolder and incorporated more materials and colors. The rise of the building featured a few more changes in depth, and the original roof had solid gold-colored cladding along the side of the pyramid. In the end the frame was pushed to the dimensions we see now to provide more building space and simpler design, but this makes the building look extremely bland from the sides. The pyramid was also pushed higher as a part of this, at which scale Roche thought he could pull off the exposed frame design as something Atlanta's would view in the same artistic vein as the Eiffel Tower. IMO, that effect fails for two main reasons: 1) There is nothing structurally or decoratively tying the pyramid to the rest of the outside building, so it looks like an obvious and cheap topping for the building. It never fails that family and friends visiting for the first time ask me "When will they finish that building?" 2) Especially at night, the coloration of the pyramid frame and the spire on top are noticeably different, making it look all the more like something simply added at the end.

The building is very imposing and certainly stands out, especially given its location, but it's not charming and regularly panned by the average resident. I really hoped for better from this one and often dream of swapping it with the comparable Key Tower in Cleveland.

This isn't a new concept...many buildings have this type of ornamentation to create a dramatic appearance, even though the area may not be useable square footage:

I like this one. It is not exactly a classic, and I agree with some others who think the crown detracts (for instance, it would be better if it were more substantial). But I think the shape of the building itself is very nice and it is one of the major focal points in the Atlanta skyline. It has good height and I like the strong vertical emphasis and the setbacks near the top. Interesting color make it distinctive and it looks nice when lit up at night.

With a better top it would be a 9, but as built, I give it an 8.5.
