From the Merc:
A £13 million revamp of a city centre bus station is unlikely to go ahead, transport bosses have admitted.
Leicester City Council had hoped to upgrade the busy Haymarket bus station, in Charles Street, despite missing out on a £5 million grant from the Government earlier this year.
Now, deputy city mayor councillor Rory Palmer said the council didn't have the money for the scheme.
He said: "We won't give up on it. However, given the situation we find ourselves in financially, it is unlikely it will happen without Government support.
"We need Government funds to match our investment or unlock money from other sources.
"If more money becomes available we will bid for it, but there is no guarantee it will."

Make all journeys across the Leicester Urban Area a £1, regardless of bus company. Better idea than spending £13 on a Bus Station...

Sort out the buses themselves before bothering with a new place to not be able to catch them.

Difficult to sort out the buses when the council have no say over them.

Something they cocked up nearly 20 years ago.

£200,000 fines for motorists caught out driving in bus lanes in Leicester city centre

http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/200-000-fines-motorists-caught-driving-bus-lanes/story-16660955-detail/story.html

Fines totalling £200,000 have been handed out to motorists in the first two weeks of a campaign to stop drivers using city centre bus lanes.

More than 3,300 motorists were caught driving along the lanes during restricted hours in two zones in the city.

£100,000 a week in fines! Nice little earner for the council. Hopefully they will put it to good use.

I think we should get a few more of these cameras. It would soon pay for city centre improvements.

I'd rather the cameras were being used to secure our historic buildings and prevent them being burned down. Though of course, that doesn't generate income...

Wouldn't it be better just to actually use the historical buildings rather than let them decay? Just a suggestion for LCC!

The Mayor has suggested this in his new plans.

Nice to know that the needs of cabbies and those who can afford to use taxis have been more than adequately met

It will be as bland as the station itself and most probably blue! Why do people think that just because we live in Leicester we all support Leicester?! In the breath why do people think blue is a nice colour for a building?! Tshirt and jeans yes but building....?!

I must defend the bus station - I think its a well designed building totally fit for purpose (except for the disgusting loos) and its just a shame it was not built where the Haymarket shelters are now. Back in the 90's the building was red !

I remember! It's was equally as shit.

I think the main problem I have with it is that it's situated on the ring road. Looks appalling.

I don't support having blue buildings. I'm a Leicester City fan, but I wouldn't paint my house blue.

Living in Leicester shouldn't mean you have to support the local football team. However if you are from Leicester or Leicestershire and you like football - then you SHOULD support LCFC. Unless you have a true family link to another team. What excuse is there to support another team?

St Margaret's isn't too bad. There are plenty of awful bus stations around the country. Look what is used to be like...yuk!
