We continue our journey into the mid city section of the CBD centred around the following precincts ….

- Martin Place
- Hyde Park
- Pitt St Mall

This area now serves as the retail core of the city with a chaotic blend of office and residential skyscrapers. One noticeable thing is the increased density of skyscrapers and narrow streets. ;)

Art Deco office block, a common architectural style in Sydney. The 1920s was one of the biggest construction periods in the history in Sydney. This was the period that Sydney’s population eclipsed and surpassed Melbourne’s. Since then Sydney has regained and kept its reputation as Australia’s largest and premiere international city.

“Martin Place” is a long pedestrian plaza that crosses the city centre on an east-west axis. This area is Sydney’s banking and financial district. “Martin Place” is lined with some of the city’s most elegant commercial buildings dating back to the late 19th century and also the Art Deco period.

At the top of Martin Place passes “Macquarie Street”, this is the location of the ”State Parliament of New South Wales”. Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales (abbreviated as NSW). Macquarie Street contains the oldest buildings in Sydney and has always been the location of the state government since colonial days. Impressive buildings line the length of Macquarie Street which runs from the top of Hyde Park down towards the Harbour.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1948/picture104hs2.jpg

“New South Wales State Parliament” – occupies the northern wing of the former “Rum Hospital” built in the early 1800s. This was always intended to be a “temporary” solution for the state parliament house but in the end it became the permanent location based on the ongoing history and traditions of the building.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1223/picture101ds0.jpg

“Sydney Hospital” – a larger Victorian era hospital building which was in part designed by well known nurse Florence Nightingale, a founder of the nursing system. She worked here for a period of time. One of the hospital wings is dedicated in her honour. This building replaced the central wing of the former “Rum Hospital”.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4015/picture102wt5.jpg

The “Former Mint” – located in the southern wing of the old “Rum Hospital”. Called the “Rum Hospital” as its construction was founded by the sale of rum alcohol when the colony was first established in Sydney. :D Now a museum.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/301/picture103th1.jpg

“Hyde Park Barracks” – built by the famous Governor Macquarie who established order in the early city. He established a large public works program that saw many elegant public and private buildings built in Sydney. He laid the foundations of Sydney’s identity. The “Hyde Park Barracks” is located at the top of Hyde Park at the start of Macquarie Street which was named in his honor. This building housed the accommodation of convicts and soldiers in the early days of Sydney. It is also the most haunted building in the city with frequent paranormal activity. :D

“Pitt Street Mall” – The shopping mecca of Sydney. Numerous shopping centres, department stores and retail arcades run off this important retail hub. This section is closed to traffic and is a pedestrian zone. This section of street is in the top 5 of the most expensive retail zones in the world. Retailers pay a premium to be located here.

Along the way you pass beneath the “Queen Victoria Building” and from there are further connections to other underground and above ground malls and arcades. Shop till you drop in Sydney. :D

One interesting thing is that the Catherdral was only completed several years ago when the twin Gothic spires where finally added. Sydney’s Catholic Catherdral is approximately 75 metres tall (Zagreb’s is taller at 105 metres)

The funny thing was my bedroom was located on the second floor. :D

Great threads and amazing city! :master: You are lucky you live there!

I am specially glad to see so many photos of Sydney public transportation, metro, tram, light rail, suburban trains... But it would be nice if you could get more photos of monorail, I am very interested in that kind of public transportation... :D :D :D

Sometimes lucky, but generally unfortuante .... :D

No problems, I will take some more photos of the Monorail. :)

Zbilja fenomenalan grad!
