Well, this is our second addition to the world forums, and it's much more inspired than the first one (City Lofts tower). It should also be slightly taller than the first at somewhere around 105m.

Velocity were granted planning permission for 22 storeys yesterday, although they're already 10 storeys into building it. The architects are currently working on an application for a height extension somewhere up to 36 storeys (although whether the council will grant it will remain to be seen). The tower will be residential, with a hotel.

Personally I think it's a pretty stunning tower, and might not be huge in world terms, but for Sheffield it's still huge.

Where the hell is Sheffield?

EDIT: Just did a search on Google, turns out Sheffield is in UK. I shouldn't have done that search as the country this tower is located should have been evident in the thread, in which it wasn't.

Neither is Poznan. Only heard of that the other week because our local airport is starting flights there because lots of your fellow countrymen emigrate to our great city. I also dont believe that an Aussie hasnt heard of Sheffield either considering they get all our TV shows, movies etc.

Sheffield is England's fourth largest city. Haven't Australians heard of anywhere outside London? I could understand a Yank never having heard of Yorkshire's finest city, but not an aussie. It's the birthplace of football, by the way.

There's only one capital of the world and that is Ljouwert. Case closed.

On topic: Nice tower, much better than the last one. This type of glass facade is becoming very English.

Yes the UK should have been in the thread title. Lets go easy here guys and not spoil this thread before its even started, not everyone can be expected to know where Sheffield is.

I've not got any problem with him not knowing where Sheffield is, however he seemed very arrogant about having to find out for himself. I don't think UK should have to be in the title. If you don't know where a place is, go and find out, but don't start making rude comments.

Anyway, can we get back to the tower please.

I'm glad that You heard about Poznan. My coutrymen emigrates to Your city for work and on the other hand Your countrymen to travel to Polish cities for drink and vandalize, especially in Warsaw and Cracow. Of course not all and we're open for tourists.

Sheffield's very nice, and Poznan's very nice, Sydney's very nice, and Ljouwert's very nice. Now can we all be friends, have a group hug and get on with talking about the tower please? Personally, I love the tower element but I really don't like the wing which looks as though it belongs to a totally different building. If Sheffield City Council (UK) has any sense at all, it'll give this permission for the full 36 floors because it looks an awful lot better at that height than it does at the 22 it currently has consent for.

god i hope it gets the full PP becuase it will look absolutely lovely if it reaches full height! Great design!

This is a much nicer addition and supertall for Sheffield than the City Lofts tower.
I've just noticed on the Sheffield forums the height is 66m, not 105m as originally suggested.

paulmat
August 21st, 2007, 08:28 PM
Yeah, the one which has been approved is 22 storeys and 66m. The architects are currently making an application to increase the height to the 36 storeys pictures, which I've estimated at 105m (using the current floor heights). You'd have to have pretty damn small rooms to fit 36 storeys into 66m. Lol.

Myster E
August 21st, 2007, 10:23 PM
actually, I originally thought the 22 floors for the 105 m height sounded absurd, there must have been a massive lobby on the ground basement taking up that space or the celing heights avaeraged around 4 metres, a room for giants. And if you add 14 floors to the existing 22 you'd have a skyscraper, no ordinary highrise.

22floors for 66m sounds pretty tiny to be honest with you, in fact not to dissimilar to a council house in Brum, the average height of a tall council block is 57-60 metres which probably holds 20 floors max.

Seriously? Above Liverpool and Leeds? Or do you mean just in size and not in 'power' terms?

I hope it gets the full PP, something different is certainly needed in that area. Can't wait till its done though.

No, above Liverpool and Manchester. ;)

Everyone knows it's down to council boundaries, but Sheffield is between the 4th and 6th biggest in England. :)

Sheffield is certainly not the capital of the world, or a capital city at all for that matter. Also, I'm not from the UK so how can you expect me to know where it is?

Anyway, the tower looks quite nice. The facade looks quality, from the render and I hope it turns out like that when built.

I once caught a megabus through Sheffield, all I really remember is some ugly shopping centre and smoke stacks. Didn't get to see any good parts of the city though.

yes its been a ferocious debate in the community, as many people dont want them to go.

however to get back to the earlier posts on this thread. can we please leave the bickering alone now, its getting very tedious.

the tower would be a great addition to the city whether it gets the extra planning permission or not.

Nice tower, horrible location!

The location is actually nothing like that bad, somehow they've managed to get it to look like it's in the middle of no-where when theyre's a load of midise buildings around it. :dunno:

Anyway, the application has gone in for the 36 storey tower, and it should be up on the internet by next week so i'll post some new renders.

It's 36 storeys, apartments & hotel, has a skybar on the 35th floor, and wind turbines on the top. It'll be 108m to the roof, and 121m to the top of the turbines if it gets permission.

Also, as one of the architects for the company designing it is on this forum, he's said they're looking into a second tower as the council doesn't like the current wing design. (See the render in Hella Good's post above).

Here's some construction pictures:
