Wanted to model a few towers since i haven't done that in quite some time, i'm working on some of the Sheikh Zayed Road towers located in the city of Dubai. Would like to know what you guys think of it! Still working on some towers so when another one's finished, i'll update.

These are amazing models! How much time do you take to complete one building?

When I opened the thread I expected something from Sketchup but wow! That is pretty good mate.

didn't take that long at all, when i'm in a modeling mood i just go to work on some towers. the most imported thing in sketchup is to know how to make shapes. the top of the rose tower looks complicated, but it was quite easy to model.

please render with kerky...it looks 10000 times better than podium(or what you use)

i know it renders better but ... when i render with kerky it renders crap, i know im doing it wrong but i dont know how to make good renders..

yea. i agree. how come if i render in podium i get very different colors than from what i made in sketchup?

i think thats because you propably havent got all faces turned right. you have to right click on a face of your model and then reverse faces, maybe it works then.

also... if anyone knows quite a bit of how kerkythea works, can you please explain me how to do it?

^^ Could you send me the lighthouse tower (on its own)? I'll see what I can do.

If you want to render in kerkythea there are a few things you should do. Don't bother about the "TG_" thing I said before, there are better ways.

First you should add in floorplates, no interiors, just 2 surfaces about 20 or 30cm apart spanning the width of the tower. I couldn't render your rose rotana model because the program interpretes the entire middle of the tower as one glass block and it just looks weird.

2nd thing, purge all unused textures (go to window -> model info).

Now export to kerkythea.

To change the materials in kerkythea do this: On the left side of the screen all the textures should be listed under "models". Right click on one of them and go to "edit material". The menu that comes up has a whole load of options but on the bottom right there's this icon that says "get". Inside that there should be a bunch of different material types you can select.

Once you have the material you can mess around with all the settings. Render at a crap setting and low resolution for just testing out stuff, keep on doing stuff until you get the right result. There are a few different types of glass so finding the right one might take a while.


Here's a render of the lighthouse tower, you can see why you need to put in the floor plates.
Dunno why one surface turned out radioactive, I guess it's a bug or something :weird:

If you want a truly ass-kicking render you'll have to texture everything. You can probably download 100s of different materials on the kerkythea website and forum. I haven't done this since I'm too lazy. Also for the best result render at twice the size and reduce in photoshop.

i see it indeed :P but i dont know the kerkythea program very well but im going practise. to make the glass look like real i think thats the most difficult.

oh..if you want to get the glass fast just click on your glass in the solid render (go first view/adjust/solid render)
then you see your model in a solid render then click on your window /glass
and you see in the list left there will come a star (these steps are only for orientation,if you named your material what you want to be in kerkythea like glass already that you know its glass then you dont have to do these steps)
then left click on your glassmaterial in your list and go to apply material and choose glass (there are a lot more like bronze silver and so on)
if you want it more reflective just put some higher number in reflection

Yes it can. maybe try to make from that smaller parts. i have once tried to export one of my project to SU and it crashed too.

I know what you mean, SU isn't crashing but it just takes a long and hard time before it is exported.
Probably the SU screen is turning white or whatever;)
Just go and do something else and than after a while (since the size of the file, a whole while ;) ) it is exported

the buildings i model are most of the time from the dubai marina ... every time i want to render it again (entire marina) because i made another building i have to do all the glass settings etc etc all over again... is there a way that kerkythea can save those settings for the towers?

ya you can...
you have to create your own library, then make the material (glass) , send it to your library,then save the library...if you didnt understand say....i can add it to the kerkythea help thread :D

beilen is in drenthe, holland indeed :) it isn't very hard to make towers in sketchup like i do, the only thing you have to know is how to make shapes, that's what sketchup is all about :)

these designs do not belong to me :P this is an existing project of 79 towers being constructed in dubai. maybe 10 buildings are finished in real life and i'm trying to give people an idea of how the area will look like in a few years time.

@ Axel F: I use Sketchup as 3D modelling tool, and no I don't live in Dubai. I work from construction pics and renders which I search for on the internet.

Sometimes I search the internet for a floorplan and the rest I do with photos or renders, when I can't find a floorplan I just look at photos / renders.

Truly brilliant modelling, and texturing/colouring, you have an awesome understanding of sketchup & kerkythea. Would love to see all these towers rendered together in location once you've completed all the colours for them. Keep it up.

Well, there are some bugs in it, and thats why there are some pieces lightning up, what you could do is render in a higher setting. Wich one are you using now?

@Jude12: Yes the buildings are hollow because it keeps my computer running a little faster, I'm still searching for the perfect (no see through) glass.

Already did all 79 towers of the Jumeirah Lakes project, just scroll back a few pages. About the Dubai Marina, working on it now. When I finished a bunch of towers I will try to do a render with all of them.

Its a mammoth project you've set yourself, I admire your dedication - not helped by Dubai unveiling new towers all the time I suppose.

yup, tallest block dubai marina, marina pinnacle is it's neighbour.
i'm rendering the thing right now but... it's already busy for about 5 hours and only 66% with a resolution of 400x800 and medium quality, it takes SO long :(

Also Dubai Marina is comming along nicely now :)

Wanted to work on the Address today but something went wrong. When I opened the file it said: The autosave file is more recent, do you want to open that one? I accidentally pressed no and now I have a file from the building in very early stages so I can start all over again! Is there any way I can still open the autosave file? I searched in Windows Explorer and could find a XML file which is more recent than the SKP file. Is there any chance I could maybe use that one?

I'm colouring all my JLT models now, when im done ill make a render of the entire project

for now a small render of 3 towers, imagine the same (not such a quick render as this) but then with 79 towers :)

All 71 towers are indeed ready, I still have to colour some and add them to the file so I can render them. And uploading takes forever.
