View Full Version : A Hidden "Pearl" of the City?

Pearl's Hill, located beside Chinatown and near the river is in a very central location, yet has been undisturbed for a very long time.

URA had revealed ambitious plans to activate the natural hillside greenery in the 2003 Masterplan, yet not much has happened for whatever reason.

With the recent release of a white site at the Outram Park station, perhaps this area could change over the next 10 years.

probably, waiting for the right time to develop the area - like now.

Definitely.

Currently the main landmarks in the area facing Chinatown are both about at least 30 years old:

The hillside offers reasonably good views of the skyline

Large and vacant land plots at the foothills along Outram Rd

Near the Chinatown side there are 3 heritage buildings worthy of conservation.
They are the former CID complex and a bungalow. They should definitely be restored IMO.

I'm not sure if thats for real or not.

A pity that its extremely difficult to capture the front facades of the 2 grand colonial buildings. One is simply obscured by a huge covered walkway along Eu Tong Sen Street, and the other hidden by building blocks.

However these buildings may be leased out as offices in the near to short-term future, so hopefully they can be spruced up.

There is much greenery further up the hill, and it seems underutilised.

Heard there is a tomb or mini cemetary up there on the Pearl hill ?
The park feels spooky.

It's time to throw away that RA cinema at Pearl Centre if they want to have a new look in that area.
That "awesome" RA show advertisement has been the icon of the Pearl Hill for many many years.

There's a reservior there, built in the 1880s and looks like a fortress. It can be preserved and turned into a themed attraction.

It seemed like just yesterday when the old HDB flats were there. I recall having some pretty good food there. They're all gone now and I believe even Pearl's Hill Apartments is on the chopping block (en-bloc in progress, right?).

I think it was the police polygraph centre. Very kampong, probable from before 1880s

I used to think it was an eyesore...but now the thought of it being demolished floor by floor is painful...It'd be like demolishing a castle:ohno:

I have some pics of that old bungalow. It looks like contractors are working on it, so it must be getting ready to receive tenants.

It looks like a hybrid between the colonial bungalow and a kampong house. Kinda similar to the one near Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

RafflesCity

Nope..I didnt..as they were working inside and the floorboards looked 'risky'. I did read that the bungalow could be let out for office use though.

That phrase is not about the skyline, you can read the wikipedia entry here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayings_of_Jesus_on_the_cross) :-)

I did venture inside & upstairs... nothing much to shout about

It has 3 sets of stairs... made me imagine that the owners is afraid of big ear hole. LOL!

i tot the former CID training centre. SLA put it up for tender before.

RafflesCity

Has the tender been announced? When I was last there the property was still fenced up. Its a pity that such large grand buildings have been obscured from public view for so long.

Unleash their potential I say!
