Was this project mentioned in the latest Solidere Reports? I remember reading about it but I was wondering when construction will begin?

'update' : The plot is closed, and 25% of the 80 appartements are already sold.

they're building a gated community in downtown beirut???? this is supposed to be the heart of the city, not a collection of private fortresses!

solidere has some really beautiful projects, especially the ones that maintain individual parcels (so that they can be individually upgraded over time).. but this is uninspiring architecture for any random development, and depressingly uninspiring for the heart of beirut...

^^ it's a nice project but yeah i think maybe the heart of the city needs to be all business and leisure ...........i donnu........

It's hard to imagine it as a gated community - the controlled access points the sales pitch refers to probably include the garage doors. It's actually a fairly small plot, with a small interior garden like one sees in cities like Berlin, the green space all too rare - and getting rarer - in Beirut. Even if private, at least it's there as a lung and a cool spot amidst the masonry.

And I don't find this development's architecture that awful. It at least has references to the experiments in large concrete balconies of the buildings of the 20s and 30s, few of which remain. So Solidere makes up a miniscule bit here for its destruction of so much that was not either religious monument or Mandate period architecture...

What's more, if it is indeed near the ruined synagogue, as one of the renderings seems to indicate, it's actually far from any through-road, nestled in the area under the France St. ridge and Daouk St. (is that really where it is, anyone?).

Truly awful, in my opinion, is what's being done with/by the entertainment center on Allenby. The Art Deco buildings it will deface are real gems.. Given the choice, I'd rather see something uninspiring that fits in, rather than a misplaced attempt to inspire that wreaks havoc with what's left of its surroundings (I'm not implying that that is what you are advocating!).
