... I dont think there is a chance in HELL that the Ravens have a shot to make the Super Bowl. ... Why?

(1) Young team=inexperience=not good for the playoffs.

(2) You didnt beat the Steelers in the regular season, regardless of the score.

(3) You think the Steelers are going to be the same in the playoffs? Fat chance, theyre going to be much much tougher.

(4) Just what you want with a rookie quarterback leading the way right? I dont think so.

(5) Most likely all roads to the super bowl go through Pittsburgh, a team that looks to be built for the playoffs,

(6) filled with veteran defensive players and possibly the most physical defensive team in football, not to mention a much better offense. ...

Hmmmm. Some responses to your assertions ....

(1) True, the Ravens have ten rookies on their active roster compared to the Steelers five, but the average years of experience of the rest favors the Ravens, 6.2 years to 3.5. At the coaching level, it's a wash: we're pitting a first-year head coach against a second-year head coach who inherited a Super Bowl-winning team.

(2) Nope, but our rookie QB took them into overtime the first time (in his third game as a pro), and was a questionable call away from a victory the second time.

(3) Steelers may be tougher; the Ravens unquestionably are. Ask Chad Pennington.

(4) Flacco's not (yet) the second coming of Pittsburgh exile Johnny Unitas, but his QB rating's better than Roethlisberger's. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?stat=pass&sort=rat&league=nfl&season=2&year=2008

Also note this bit from ESPN: "Roethlisberger (concussion) sat out practice again on Tuesday (last week) but flipped the football around in his sweats." If Bart Scott hits him like Scott hit Pennington yesterday, R-berger's done.

(5) Unless the road goes through San Diego, which has beaten the Steelers both times they faced them in the playoffs.

(6) Pittsburgh and Baltimore are 1-2 in defense http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?stat=team&sort=ypg&pos=def&league=nfl&year=2008&season=2
and 22-18 in offense, with Baltimore averaging 12 more yards a game.

Basically--if the two teams meet again--we're looking at another nailbiter, with Pittsburgh's home field advantage giving them a slight edge.

I find Leonhard to be even more exciting to watch as a kick returner. I got tired of seeing Figurs run for eight yards into a pile on every return. After Reed, Leonhard is my favorite to watch run in the open field.

I agree with you "Ex", he was a nice addtion from Buffalo. Leonard seems to be around every play and making some nice tackles for a guy 5'8", 185 lbs. He is also proving himself as a kickoff return specialist, better than Figures. Some sportswriters are believing that the ravens can go all the way to the big game. Flacco has to step it up a notch or two. Can't just rely on the defense like 2000. Teams that the Ravens will face on their journey have great defense as well. Pitts has the best and the road might lead through Steel town. BTW If the ravens get by Tenn, I would rather play the Steelers than the Chargers. Teams traveling between the coasts have not done well.

Eh. As long as the comments aren't attacks directed at another commenter (and "en1044's" wasn't), no need for the forum to be a 24-7 Ravens love-fest.

Wait. What? Flacco looked like Alan Ameche running that TD in yesterday. Trent Dilfer never played like that in Y2K. What needs to happen first is that Todd "the Stormin' Mormon" Heap's gotta be more reliable catching the ball.

Jamie I agree, Flacco's 5 yard carry into the end zone was reminiscent of Ameche's famous carry 50-years ago. However, Flacco has to be more accurate with the long ball and cannot settle for 3 inside of the Red Zone. Amassing field goals got the Ravens to the Big One in 2000, but today's competition is tougher. They need to put points on the board, and the earlier the better. The Ravens are more intimidating and wear down teams when their foes have to play catch-up.

Did you guys hear the playoff slogan created by the Ravens throughout this year's playoffs? It was created by John Harbaugh's father. It was made from the 1965 heavyweight fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston. Throughout the fight, Liston kept calling him outside his name, so Ali kept tagging him throughout the fight screeming "What's my name!!" until Liston finally fell to the ground like a tree. Personally, I like the slogan! It was a great description of what happened yesterday in Miami.

Here's the slogan. What's our name? BALTIMORE RAVENS!!

What do you guys think?

Yeah, Atlanta pre-Ryan was effed up big time. Huuuuge recovery from the Vick-era fiasco. Not all on account of "Matty Ice," but he gets big props and probably the RotY pick.

Not a good result, but Unitas didn't start that game. It also served to ridiculously inflate the career of "Broadway" Joe Namath to the point that he's in the HOF with some pretty pedestrian career numbers.

My favorite re-tellings of that game are Namath's, though. While the Jets were looking to have the game in hand, Don Shula finally relented & replace Morrall with a less-than-100% Unitas.
After an initial 3-and-out, the Colts were suddenly able to move the ball & Namath's crew stood helplessly on the sideline watching momentum clearly shift away from New York. Namath couldn't stop pacing & kept muttering "Johnny U" under his breath. But the injury/rust coupled with the lack of time prevented Unitas from mounting any game-winning drive & the Jets won SB3.

Unitas never forgave Shula for bringing him in so late & maintained the Colts would have won the game if he'd had more time.

...gasp!! Hard to believe it's been that long ago. I remember watching the game with my Dad. '69 was a disastrious year for Baltimore sports. 10 months later, the Mets beat the O's in the World Series for another improbable win, giving NY a rare double...championships in both major sports. But just 2 years later, little ole B'more accomplished the feat...O's beat Cincy in the '70 series and the Colts won the '71 Super Bowl!!

Matt Stover's gotta be the most hated man in Tennessee!!! For the 2nd time in 8 years, his leg makes the difference in the playoffs!! It's like deja vu...knocking off the Titans again under very similar circumstances as 2001 and the strong possiblity of facing the Giants again in the Super Bowl, in the same city, Tampa.

StevenW
January 11th, 2009, 03:19 PM
^^ Yeah, I was thinking about that exact same thing last night.
That would be a great deja vu!
But, really, if you look at the history between the Baltimore NFL teams and the NY Giants, since the 50's Baltimore has beat them everytime in the big game. Look it up. It's a trip. And you know, I don't think that the Giants and their fans really want to see us again in the big game.

ah, what a sour anti-ravens fan. Get over it. That was on a 3rd and 7, and Heap caught a 23 yard pass..... so do the math, if they had called that, they still would've converted on the pass play to Heap. carolina panties over arizoner cardidulls 17-13

tennesee tight pants over baltisore faydins 20-7

new jerk jackholes over philadelphia shmeegles 30-24

and my new revised superbowl champions: The New York football giants for the re-peat! :D

"ravens had a little help from the refs; on that final pass, the 40 second clock had clearly expired before flaco threw the ball, come on refs, pay attention to the play clock next time! What the heck is wrong with the officiating this season??"

I'll agree with you on this one though. We did not get that off in time. Although, the announcers did say that they usually give an extra second after it hits zero. Seems like that was a long second though, but hey I'll take it. We've had plenty of horrible calls go against us in crucial game deciding moments this year, it's about time one went our way. I've actually seen this same thing with the play clock happen against us at least 2 times this year and no flag. Also... this is sweet justice for the horrible "ruffing the passer" against Suggs in the First Titans matchup earlier this year, which allowed them to go down the field for a winning touchdown drive. All that being said, you can't blame a loss on a bad call, if the Titans were who we thought they were then they shouldn't have allowed our little rookie qb to complete the drive for the winning fg, or allowed our d to force all of the turnovers. Still one of the most hard fought games I've seen in a while, until next Sunday vs team steal-a-lot. That Titans game (or our next) may be even better than the s.b., as far as "edge of the seat" excitement goes IMHO.

come on guys, just because I don't pick your team doesn't mean i'm anti-ravens, I'm just being objective, basing my pics on stats, scientific facts and my own gut feeling. I couldn't care less if the ravens win the superbowl or not, or the eagles or the steelers or the cardinals or whoever. If the Redskins were in the playoffs I wouldn't even be predicting winners since I'd be emotionally involved and that emotion might cloud my judgement. Granted I haven't really been doing so well in my pics lately anyway :D But did I call the Steelers game or what?? :)

On the first day of school a first grade teacher explains to her
class that she is a Steelers fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Steelers fans. Wanting to impress their teacher, everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl.
The teacher looks at the girl with surprise, 'Janie, why didn't you
raise your hand?'

Because I'm not a Steelers fan,' she replied.

The teacher, still shocked, asked, 'Well, if you are not a Steelers fan,
then who are you a fan of?'

'I am a Ravens fan, and proud of it,' Janie replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. 'Janie please tell us why you
are a Ravens fan?'

Because my mom is a Ravens fan, and my dad is Ravens fan, so I'm a
Ravens fan too!''

Well ,said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, 'that is no reason
for you to be a Ravens fan. You don't have to be just like your parents
all of the time. What if your mom was an idiot and your dad was a moron,
what would you be then?'

'Then,' Janie smiled, 'I'd be a Steelers
fan.'

NUMBER 2

A Redskins fan, an Eagles fan, a Ravens fan, and a Steelers fan - are
climbing a mountain and arguing about who loves his team more.

The Redskins fan insists he is the most loyal. 'This is for the
Redskins! ' he yells, and jumps off the side of the mountain.

Not to be outdone, the Eagles fan shouts, 'This is for the Eagles!'
and throws himself off the mountain.

The Ravens fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells,
'This is for everyone!' and pushes the Steelers fan off the mountain.

NUMBER 3

A Ravens fan liked to amuse himself by scaring every Steelers fan he
saw strutting down th e street in an obnoxious Black & Gold shirt. He
would swerve his van as if to hit them then swerve back just missing
them.
>
> >One day while driving along, he saw a priest. He thought he would do
a good deed, so he pulled over and asked the priest, 'Where are you
going, Father?'
>
> 'I' m going to give Mass at St. Francis church, about two miles down
the road,' replied the priest. 'Climb in, Father I'll give you a lift!'
The priest climbed into the passenger seat, and they continued down the
road.

Suddenly, the driver saw a Steelers fan walking down the road, and he
instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, he swerved back
onto the road just in time.

Even though he was certain that he had missed the guy, he still
heard a loud THUD. Not knowing where the noise came from, he glanced in
his mirrors but still didn't see anything.

He then rememb ered the priest, and he turned to the priest and said,
sorry Father , I almost hit that Steelers fan.'

'That's OK,' replied the priest 'I got him with the door.'

In a move designed to show hometown team spirit, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said Wednesday he will temporarily go by another moniker.

Ravenstahl ceremonially changed his name to "Steelerstahl," removing the name of the Baltimore Ravens, who will face the Steelers Sunday in the AFC Championship game at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

“On behalf of the Steelers Nation, I’ve decided to remove the word ‘Ravens’ from my name just like the Steelers will remove them from the AFC Championship,” the mayor said in a statement. “From now until Sunday, all references to my name will reflect Pittsburgh’s love and support for our Steelers — and suggest a victory.”

^^Yes it's for real. I shot it out the window on my way home from work yesterday. They have had purple lights shining on the pile for about two weeks now, but Mon. on the way in to work I noticed they added the "Go Ravens". This is on the right side as you are heading south on 95 just before the toll booths for the tunnel, in between 95 and Canton. I'm not sure what it is a pile of... other than team spirit:).

No joy in Mudville tonight, but for the first time since the Browns/Ravens came to this town, we seem to have a quarterback with some promise for the future. Who would have thought last year that they'd be in the conference championship game with a QB that can throw and think.

when willis mcgahee got carted off the field from that frightening hit, it wasn't even about football anymore. not to mention, they didn't call helmet-to-helmet!!

but that's not to take anything away from the steelers. they played a great game. we had our chances in the 2nd half, but we just didn't capitalize. troy polamalu sealed the dagger in our hearts with that interception for a touchdown.

That stupid personal foul, slamming the steeler player to the ground nearly 30 feet outside the sideline, was the momentum killer for the ravens. They were only behind by two points at that time. They would have had the football past the 40 yardline to start their drive for a touchdown or even a fieldgoal. Either one would have put the ravens on top. The defense would have then been able to have held off the steelers, I believe. I mean, flacco did not play as good as he could have, but they were making a comeback until that stupid, stupid momentum-killing foul! That got in the head of flacco and other ravens players. It gave the steelers and their fans a huge boost in their hopes to stop the raven's drive. And ultimately, flacco's mental game was beat and threw a crazy pass that "slammed" the ravens to the ground for good!
I really believe that the ravens could have and probably would have won that game if it were not for that STUPID foul at the end there. And I'm not just saying that because I like the ravens. BTW, I hope the steelers do not think that arizona will be easy to beat. They look like a team of destiny even more so than the steelers.
Go Arizona!

I know. I was on such a high when they return was done. When they came back to commercial, to see that "hilight" of the foul made me sick to my stomach. I thought we were on our way despite being out played by the steelers. I say a redux of the titans game. I think our good fortune caught up to us. Hats off to the steelers. the only times i watch the ravens are if the redskins are playing them or if they are in the playoffs, and to be honest when i do watch them i find it boring. Yes we all know that a strong defense and running the ball can be an effective strategy, but i would prefer more of an offensive gameplan.

Can't argue with that.

In the previous two meetings, however, I thought that Baltimore played the better game, and it was unfortunate that they didn't win either time. As it became clear last night that the Ravens were being outplayed, I was hoping we'd end up on the winning side of the "better team loses" equation that had defined the series up until that point....and had that personal foul not happened, I think Baltimore would have won it. Without the personal foul, we would have only needed two first downs to get into field goal range.

Oh well, at least we have...the Orioles...to look...forward to.... ugh...

It'll be interesting to see how Warner handles Pittsburgh's defense. He's such a unique player that it's hard to say whether he'll dismantle them or be completely crushed by them. I'm rooting for Pittsburgh, but if Kurt Warner puts on a good show, I'll be happy to see the Cardinals cut down the Steelers.

Plus, this game will likely determine whether Warner will be a Hall of Famer. He wins, he's in. He loses, probably won't make it.

I'd hate for it to come to that, but they might have to put the franchise tag on him. But a disgruntled Lewis could be a major negative in the locker room. Hopefully Ozzie Newsome will be able to read him and make the decision that is in the best interest of the team, in spite of the fan fallout.

i just want the ravens to flat-out sign ray instead of throwin' the frachise tag on him. i've never been a huge fan of the whole "franchise tage" label. it makes players bitter and resentful and creates bruised feelings between that player & his team. a perfect example is chris mcallister. you guys saw how bad hestarted to play when we threw the franchise label on him back in '04.

i don't blame ray for not wanting to take less since we see evidence on the field that he doesn't play less. but if we don't sign him, we must atleast sign the other players that truly made an impact this year (suggs, scott, leonhard).

Ravens sign ex-Terp Foxworth to four-year deal
Team lands speedy CB with $27.2M contract on first day of free agency
By Jamison Hensley | jamison.hensley@baltsun.com
3:15 PM EST, February 27, 2009

With his family seated before him, Domonique Foxworth was welcomed home as the newest member of the Ravens.

Foxworth, who played at Catonsville's Western Tech and the University of Maryland, signed a four-year deal worth $27.2 million, including $16.5 million guaranteed.

"I've dreamed of playing here," Foxworth said at today's news conference.

Foxworth, who wore a gray suit and a purple tie, had his father, mother, grandmother, older brother and girlfriend sitting in the front row of the team auditorium.

"When the Ravens got here [in 1996], automatically we gravitated to them, just like most of the city has because they are a hard-nosed, blue-collar team just like this city is," he said. "To finally be able to come back and be apart of it is great."

A part-time starter throughout his four-year NFL career, Foxworth lacks ideal size (5 feet 11, 180 pounds) but makes up for it with exceptional speed. Considering the size of Foxworth's contract, the Ravens likely project him to start alongside Fabian Washington.

The addition of Foxworth clouds the future of Samari Rolle. There was speculation last week that the Ravens were shopping Rolle, 32, who is scheduled to make $4.1 million this season.

"You can look at it as Domonique has replaced Chris [McAlister]," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "[The staff] has talked about 'have as many corners as you can.' I think they all find their way on the field at some point."

A third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2005, Foxworth has played in 60 games but started only 28 of them. He has four career interceptions.

After three seasons with the Broncos, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons before last season for a seventh-round pick and started a career-high 10 games for Atlanta.

"He's a top-flight corner and a top-flight corner in the Ravens mold," coach John Harbaugh said.

Newsome declined to answer any questions regarding free agency.

Notes: Backup defensive end Marques Douglas was cut by the Ravens ... The Ravens have placed a second-round tender on punter Sam Koch, a restricted free agent. The team will tender Koch a one-year, $1.5 million contract and would receive a second-round pick as compensation if he signs elsewhere. ... Three other restricted free agents (safety Dawan Landry, receiver Demetrius Williams and tight end Quinn Sypniewski) received low tenders. The Ravens will tender them one-year, $1 million deals and would receive a draft pick from the round the player was drafted as compensation. ... The Ravens didn't make qualifying offers to running back P.J. Daniels, tight end Scott Kuhn, wide receiver Marcus Maxwell, linebacker Robert McCune and cornerback Evan Oglesby, making them all free agents. ... Cornerback Derrick Martin signed a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum.

I guess there's not enough money on the table to suit him and he's feeling disrespected. If the rumors are his true feelings I say let him go. Might be time to cut ties anyway. That way Harbaugh will have complete control of the locker room.

Now, if he was a person that was "loyal" to the team, then I say sign him up until he retires. And give him a respectable salary. I mean, the Ravens have been a great team to play on. The entire organization has been great to the players. It's not the biggest, most popular franchise, but it's one of the best none the less.

^^last year, i remember one of the members on the monday night football crew saying that we're the most exciting team to watch in the nfl, & i would have to agree.

last year was a hell of a year for us. between ed reed returning an interception 108 yards, joe flacco taking us to the afc championship (as a rookie), ray lewis knocking someone's helmet off, the trick-plays, and the reverses, i was excited with the product we had on the field to say the least.

too bad brian billick wasn't willing to be this creative.

It's a business world , it's all about the money. Soccer, baseball, football ... no longer sports but very profitable businesses ( for the most part ) instead.i hear what you're saying, and i agree with most of it. but let's be honest....these guys make so much money, it's probably growing out their a$$e$.....lol. most of them aren't gonna' live long enough to spend it all anyway.

now, i remember ray lewis making this statement about possibly resigning with the ravens:

"i certainly don't play less on the field, so why should i accept less?".

his statement may indeed be true, but loyalty is above anything else.

for those of you who have seen the movie Jerry Maguire, tom cruise (the agent) summed up why cuba gooding (the player) wasn't getting the money he thought he deserved. here's what he said:

"Alright. Here's why you don't have your ten million dollars yet. You are a paycheck player. You play with your head. Not your heart. In your personal life? Heart. But when you get on the field -- you're a businessman. It's wide-angle lenses and who fucked you over and who owes you for it. That's not what inspires people."

the bottom line is this......if ray lewis is the "loyal" player with "heart" that i believe he is, he'll be wearing a purple uniform come next year. if not, adios!

I dont think I could disagree with you more.

This will likely be Ray's last contract. Hes in the same boat as Kurt Warner where he wants to make sure that he will be fine and dandy after he retires and will want to get as much money as he can. Its just how it is. Maybe he wants to go somewhere where he has a better chance to win a championship. You arent being very loyal to your beloved #52. He played great for you, doesnt he deserve some respect? Hes putting his own interests first and theres nothing wrong with that. If he leaves, he leaves. There really should be no complaints, hes attained everything that he can in Baltimore. If he goes into the Hall, it will likely be as a Raven (unofficially).

^^go somewhere where he thinks he has a better chance to win a championship? and you consider the jets or cowboys the better alternative? gimme' a break.....lol. we now have a rookie quarterback who has a hell of an arm and good accuracy. the jets don't have a legitimate QB threat and the cowboys have enough drama within their locker room to drive any coach nuts. you have T.O. bitching about not getting enough catches, and you have tony romo...."mister inconsistent" himself.

we won the super bowl in the 2000 season. despite how good that team was (well defensively, anyway), i consider the team we have now 5 times better.....maybe not as good defensively, but they're in the top 3.

Really, only the most naive of football fans still believe that there is actually team loyalty in the NFL. It's all about the benjamins nowadays baby. The likes of Darrell Green or Art Monk or John Elway who played for one team their whole careers are long gone.

Ravens not expected to pursue Owens
Star wide receiver isn't considered good fit, team source says
By Jamison Hensley | jamison.hensley@baltsun.com
4:05 PM EST, March 5, 2009
The Ravens aren't expected to show any interest in wide receiver Terrell Owens, a team source said.

Owens, 35, who was officially released by the Dallas Cowboys today, isn't considered a good fit in the Ravens' "team-first" philosophy, the source added.

It's likely the Ravens still have bitter feelings toward Owens.

In March 2004, after a paperwork error prevented Owens from becoming an unrestricted free agent, the Ravens traded a second-round pick to San Francisco for him. But Owens refused to report for a physical to complete the deal and got the union to file a grievance on his behalf in an attempt to go to Philadelphia.

During today's news conference introducing center Matt Birk, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he couldn't comment on Owens because the release hadn't officially been announced.

Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin
Summary: The tension between Boldin and Cardinals management has come to a head. The Cardinals now say they are actively listening to trade offers for Boldin, who is unhappy with his contract situation.

Likely compensation: A first- and mid-round pick. Boldin is a more consistent player than Edwards, but is also 2½ years older. Boldin, who turns 29 in October, also has missed an entire season's worth of games with injuries since 2004.

Trade odds: Very good. Even a team with such stubborn, frugal management can see that keeping a player as disgruntled as Boldin could disrupt locker-room chemistry. Baltimore, which has expressed interest, would be an ideal fit. The Ravens need to give quarterback Joe Flacco some better receiving help than 35-year-old Derrick Mason and ho-hum starter Mark Clayton. The Giants, Philadelphia and New York Jets are other possibilities

After falling a game short of a trip to the Super Bowl in the 2008 season, the Baltimore Ravens don’t expect the recession to block season ticket holders from renewing their plans.

The Ravens anticipate a 99.5 percent renewal rate for 2009 season tickets, said Baker Koppelman, vice president of ticket sales and operations.

“There’s no major red flags at this point,” he said.

The deadline to renew ticket plans is June 1.

Around 46,000 tickets to the July 24 game pitting Chelsea, of the English Premier League, against A.C. Milan, of Italy’s top division, have been sold, said Baker Koppelman, vice president of ticket sales and operations for the Baltimore Ravens.

The sales are “way beyond what we expected” through late April, Koppelman said. Tickets to the event range in price from $35 plus fees to $175 for a VIP package.

Koppelman said he expects the event to sell out the 71,000-seat stadium in Baltimore. The Ravens are the stadium’s primary tenant.

The NFL is investigating whether the Washington Redskins committed tampering in their pursuit of Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

The Titans, who registered charges with the league, were trying to re-sign Haynesworth after the 2008 season, but believe they were interfered with by the Redskins.

The Titans are accusing the Redskins of contacting Haynesworth and his agent, Chad Speck, before the free agency period started Feb. 27. Yahoo! Sports reported that according to two sources, the league already has talked with at least two people who are linked to the case.

The Redskins could lose a draft pick if the league proves that they committed tampering.

Haynesworth signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins.

Both Speck and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to

Steve McNair found dead
Ex-Ravens QB discovered shot to death with body of woman in Nashville apartment

Former Ravens quarterback Steve McNair, who won a division title and 15 games in two seasons in Baltimore, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds in a Nashville condominium Saturday and the 20-year-old woman found dead with him was shot once in the head, police said. He was 36.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron identified the woman as Sahel Kazemi, who he called a "friend" of McNair's. Police said autopsies were planned for Sunday.

Police had no suspects in custody Saturday, but several visitors at the apartment complex were taken to headquarters for questioning "just to see what they know, what they may have seen," Aaron said.

Aaron said McNair's wife, Mechelle, is "very distraught" and that police do not believe she is involved.

McNair, the third overall pick by the Houston Oilers in the 1995 draft, spent 11 seasons with the franchise -- which moved to Tennessee two years later and eventually became the Titans -- before closing out a 13-year career with the Ravens in 2007. He took the Titans to the Super Bowl in the 1999 season, was a co-Most Valuable Player with Peyton Manning in 2003, and was selected to the Pro Bowl three times.

After being traded to the Ravens in 2006, McNair led the team to the AFC North title with a 13-3 record, but threw a critical interception on the goal line in a 15-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoff round.

On the big stage, he will be remembered for the fourth-quarter drive with Tennessee that came up a yard short in a dramatic 23-16 Super Bowl loss to the St. Louis Rams, and for playing winning football through a myriad of pains and injuries.

Reeling with the news, his former teammates in Baltimore and Nashville remembered him as a fierce competitor and a strong leader.

Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason played with McNair in Nashville and in Baltimore.

"Steve was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it," Mason said in a statement issued by the team. "I've known him for 13 years and he was the most selfless, happiest and friendliest person I have known. His family and my family are close, and it is a blow to us all. It is a devastating day. Steve will always have a place in my heart. My family and I are hurting for his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Cornerback Samari Rolle, who came to the Ravens a year before McNair, was also part of the core group of players who helped the Titans become an AFC power.

"I still can't even believe it," Rolle said. "To lose such a good friend and a good man so soon doesn't make sense.

"If you were going to draw a football player -- the physical part, the mental part, everything about being a professional -- he is your guy. I can't even wrap my arms around it. It is a sad, sad day. The world lost a great man today."

In 2006, a year after they went 6-10, the Ravens gave up a fourth-round draft pick for McNair, then 33, to solve an ongoing dilemma at quarterback. He replaced Kyle Boller and started all 16 games that season, winning 13. His costly interception against the Colts in the postseason signaled a change in fortune for the veteran quarterback, however.

He injured his groin in the 2007 season opener, had back and shoulder problems, and committed 11 turnovers while playing in only six games. In April 2008, before the first minicamp practice of the John Harbaugh coaching era, McNair caught all off guard by announcing his retirement.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome valued McNair's contribution to the team as well as his place in history.

"This is so, so sad," Newsome said in a statement. "We immediately think of his family, his [four] boys. They are all in our thoughts and prayers.

"What we admired most about Steve when we played against him was his competitive spirit, and we were lucky enough to have that with us for two years. He is one of the best players in the NFL over the last 20 years. ... He was a great player, one of the toughest of competitors and a tremendous teammate, who was a leader on the field and in the locker room, especially to the young players."

Speaking on ESPN, former Titans running back Eddie George said McNair "had ice running through his veins. He was so cool under pressure, so calm. He never raised his voice, never lost his composure."

Former Ravens center Mike Flynn called McNair one of the best teammates he ever played with.

"He's probably one of the top five teammates I've played with," Flynn said. "Obviously, everybody saw his ability, but behind closed doors, they couldn't see what a great guy he is. He was a great guy to play for and play with. It's real sad because he was one of the good guys I've met in 11 years of pro football. I'm stunned and just sad."

Another former Ravens center, Jason Brown, who signed with St. Louis this offseason, learned of McNair's death by a text message from Rams guard Jacob Bell. Both had played with McNair.

"It's a very sad day, it really is," Brown said. "And on a day when you're supposed to be with your family and celebrating Independence Day. You can't shy away from the fact that Steve was a talented human being, and for the two years that I was fortunate and blessed to have played with him in Baltimore, he definitely helped to mature my career by leaps and bounds. ... When he came in in 2006, we did something special that year, and I will never forget the poise that Steve brought to the team that year. My thoughts and prayers go to his family."

Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement: "We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today. He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."

McNair was known to frequent the condo where he was killed, but police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said she didn't know if he was the owner.

McNair opened a restaurant near the Tennessee State University campus in June. By Saturday night, it was closed but had become a small memorial, where flowers, candles and notes had been placed outside.

A note attached to a small blue teddy bear read, "We will never forget you, Steve. Once a Titan, always a Titan."

DCRTV hears that CBS Radio will make the official announcement today that guy talker WJFK will become "Sportsradio 106.7 The Fan" at 6 AM on Monday, 7/20. As DCRTV has told you, CBS suits are meeting with advertisers at noon today at the Verizon Center. As expected, the Junkies, now the Sports Junkies, will remain in morning drive. And, as we've reported, Mike Wise will be paired with Bill Rohland in middays, with Chad Dukes and Lavar Arrington doing afternoon drive. There will be a website at 1067thefandc.com. And, as we've reported, the Wizards will air on JFK this fall, with Dave Johnson and Glenn Consor calling the games. Plus, as we've hinted, JFK will be carrying Westwood One's NFL Primetime package of Thursday, Sunday, and Monday games, plus the playoffs and the Super Bowl. That package had aired on Redskins owner Dan Snyder's WTEM. We also get confirmation that longtime afternooner Mike O'Meara is a gonner. His show is in reruns this week. We hear that O'Meara will do a farewell segment, but not a full live show, on Friday, 7/17. More soon.....

^^ It was unexpected. The guy was requesting a new contract not too long ago. To me, that indicates that he still wanted to play the game. Now, I think getting Marvin Harrison to replace Derrick Mason makes a lot of sense and will restore things to the order in which they were 1 week ago. It would be like replacing A x A. I still hope Derrick Mason changes his mind but time, there isn't enough. Training camp opens soon.

Yeah, it's a loss to the team, for sure. There are players with more skill than Mason, but he showed a lot of heart and resilience last year. There aren't many players whom I'd rather have in the position than Mason. But if his heart isn't in it anymore, there's no telling if he'd paly that way again this year.

Harrison is 36 YO and coming off a leg injury and missed most of last season. Is this what we want to replace Mason with? Isn't there anyone else worth considering other than Boldin?

DC Trying to Bring NFL Back
City in talks about Redskins stadium in DC

WASHINGTON -- The District is again trying to lure an NFL team to the city.

For several seasons, the city has tried to convince the Landover Redskins to build a new stadium in D.C.

"We have let the team know that we are interested, and if there is a window of opportunity that presents itself, we're going to just jump right through it," Mayor Adrian Fenty said.

Recently, the city and Redskins owner Dan Snyder's people have been in intense, private talks about a move, News4's Tom Sherwood reported, which would give Washington its Skins back, more than a decade after the team left RFK Stadium in the rearview mirror. No one involved in the talks would comment.

"I'm always looking for opportunities to get the Redskins back in Washington," said Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans, who openly courts the team.

A new stadium would be built at the RFK site and would have about 110,000 seats and a dome, making the city a Super Bowl contender, even if the team isn't. The Redskins might also considering consolidating their operations at the location, moving its training facilities and hall of fame in from Virginia.

But in order to come home, the team has to get out of its FedEx Field lease with Prince George's County, which runs through 2027.

I would like to remind some people that the Lions went 4-0 in the preseason last year...

It's really less about the actual record that each team finishes with, but rather, how each teams' units fare. The Skins were beaten in every aspect of the game and it wasn't just the 4th and 5th stringers who were beaten. The starters all the way down to guys that may be bagging groceries in a couple weeks were overmatched by their counterparts on the Ravens sideline.

This screams of a lack of depth that you get when you don't draft properly, or when you trade all of your draft picks in the pursuit of free agents.

At any rate, don't concern yourself with W/L records. Instead, focus on how each facet of your team is doing. And, judging by the Skins' performance overall, I would definitely be concerned (if I was a Washington fan).

The Redskins have a very poor O line and lack some depth in the front seven. They need depth at RB for the long season, but I think the O line is the biggest problem they need to worry about. If that's they don't click, it's going to be a very tough season for the 'Skins.

Forget about that, what we should be concerned about are these rumors I keep hearing that Jessica Simpson is dating Redskins backup QB Colt Brennan. Don't get me wrong, I love Jessica Simpson, I think she's sexy as hell, but let's face it, when it comes to football, she's bad luck! Although I'm certainly grateful to her for royally screwing up the cowgirls last season by dating tony homo, but I wish she'd move on to another NFC east QB. Maybe Michael Vick or Eli Manning.

I don't think she's fat anymore. Maybe she is, though I don't know. I wish she'd go back to her dukes of hazzard/pepsi commercial days.

And it wouldn't surprise me about Brennan. Not simply that he's a ladies man, which he is, but he is a flirty guy. He got kicked out of school for a rape accusation which is what it is, I don't know the details. But last year, at one of my company's happy hours, he actually came to our shuffleboard table and started flirting with one of my co-workers. She's probably a 7.5, cute, but not hot. I could definitely see him being a vulture and scooping up Simpson.

Stadium: Portion of franchise's value attributable to its stadium. Brand Management: Portion of franchise's value attributable to the management of its brand.

The skinny
Off the gridiron, owner Dan Snyder has done an impressive job with the Redskins. He has improved marketing and promotions, boosted revenue, poured a fortune into players and facilities and paid down much of the debt he took on when he bought the franchise and stadium in 1999. But his arrogance and penchant for control have not mixed well running the football operations. One high priced coach after another has flopped and the team has signed several big name players only to see them stumble around the field. Snyder needs to wise up like the Dolphins finally did and turn the football reigns over to someone like Bill Parcells.

Major corporate sponsors are Siemens (nyse: SI), E*Trade Bank, Sprint Nextel (nyse: S), Coca-Cola (nyse: KO), Bank of America (nyse: BAC). Naming rights sponsor is FedEx (nyse: FDX).

The skinny
The Ravens begin a new era this year with John Harbaugh in charge after nine years of Brian Billick on the sidelines. Billick's undoing was a 5 win, 11 loss season with a team that had playoff aspirations. The Ravens continue to be one of the NFL's strongest teams financially thanks to sky-high ticket prices and a prosperous lease at M&T Bank Stadium. Last year the team raised ticket prices 25%, which boosted gate receipts by $8 million. The Ravens also sold the naming rights to the club level of the stadium to Geppi Entertainment in a deal estimated to be worth $9 million over seven years.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Steve Bisciotti is ranked as the 10th best owner in the NFL.

10. Baltimore Ravens – Steve Bisciotti: As tempting as it is to downgrade Bisciotti, one of the world’s most enthusiastic Maryland hoops fans, because his Terrapins eliminated my Golden Bears in last spring’s NCAA tournament (we’re gunning for revenge at California Memorial Stadium this Saturday), the man is doing a tremendous job. After replacing coach Brian Billick with a decidedly non-glitzy successor, John Harbaugh, Bisciotti watched his reenergized team reach the AFC championship game last season. He has a good track record of hiring impressive front-office executives, including team president Dick Cass, and he’s doing what he can to compete for revenues in a challenging environment. With the nearby Redskins sucking up sponsorship dollars, Bisciotti isn’t dealing from strength but, says one admiring owner of another team, “he’s got all the right stuff. You can see his perspective – he’s sitting right there next to Washington – and he wants to make it a free-for-all where they take [all the revenues generated] within a 150-to-200-mile radius and split it.” I can’t see Bisciotti pulling that off, but he has definitely turned the Ravens into legitimate players, on and off the field.

^^it wasn't pretty, but we got the W!!

Brian Billick the offensive genius comes in and our offense sucks.. Harbaugh comes in as the special teams genius and guess who is stinkin it up.. mad irony there :bash:

The Bad...

I'd give a pass on the field goal.. it looked good all the way till the end and the kicker is young, so I'm guessing he'll learn from that. (Why not bring in Matt Stover as a coach/consultant?)

But there is no excuse for Carr's performance. I hate it when I see a returner moving backwards, almost as much as i hate seeing a "prevent" defense. And keep in mind that his fair catch call at the 9 with no one around him for miles set up the blocked punt.

Derrick Mason dropped three passes.. while yes, two of them would have been difficult for anyone else, they were passes Derrick Mason usually catches. I have no idea what is up with that but I'm hoping its a fluke.. On the upside though I loved his comments on Keyshawn Johnson and Chris Carter, who I think are two of the worst analysts on TV.

Before everyone goes wacko for flacco, Id say he could have had 4 interceptions if KC's DB's could catch. I counted at least 3 balls bounce off of DB's hands or chests.

We didn't get hardly any pressure on the quarterback.

The Good...

I was impressed with our ability to stop the run. Our defense was great overall. We didn't get any takeaways, but until the special teams killed the momentum, our defense was dominating.

The offensive line kicked ass. It's hard to appreciate this one fully though being that KC had the fewest sacks last year in the league. Either way there was plenty of pass protection and run blocking. Equally impressive was the lack of false start penalties. Oher seems like another great pick and Gaither has really matured.

Heap is back.

Clayton is alive.

Ray Rice is running fast and SMART.

The playbook is open.
