FAISALABAD: The Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) is spending Rs 1.2 billion, annually on its distribution network and grid stations, said Fesco Chief Executive Ahmed Saeed Akhtar.

In a radio programme 'Guest in studio' of a FM channel here Tuesday, he said that not a single grid station in Faisalabad was overloaded, adding the Fesco would upgrade another 13 grid stations with $35 million loan from the Asian Development Bank.

Responding to the questions asked by participants drawn from various trade bodies, he said the Fesco has inked agreements with Shakar Ganj sugar mills Jhang, Chistia sugar mills Sillanwali and Ramzan Sugar Mills Bhowana to purchase 22 megawatts of electricity to overcome the gap between supply and demand.

A power transformer of 450 MVA is being installed at 500 KV Gatti Grid Station, he said and added that a 200 MW rental power plant was also being established on Summundri Road in private sector. It would become operational by the end of February 2009, he added.

"Fesco is supplying electricity to the traders and industrial sector on priority basis. Relief is immediately passed on to the consumers, especially industrial consumers, to continue the production and economic activity", he stressed.

Replying to a question about forced loadshedding, he said the prime objective of the National Power Control Centre (NPCC) Islamabad is to save the system and only under stress grids were closed by it. However, on the request of Fesco, Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has directed NPCC to stop forced loadshedding in view of the industrial importance of Faisalabad.

Answering a live call of a consumer Faisal Mushtaq, the chief executive said that Fesco would provide the facility to pay bills without delay surcharge in case the bank mangers refused to accept 60 percent of the billed amount.

He said under a short term programme, 1000MW rental power plants would become operational next year and loadshedding would be controlled by the end of 2009.

Responding to a question asked by Khawaja Shahid Razak Sikka President Anjuman Tajran Faisalabad, the chief executive Fesco said the instructions had been issued to disconnect double-source connections without any discrimination. "These connections not only fall under the category of discrimination but are also potential threat to the lives of line staff", he added.

He said that electricity tariff charged from consumer was less than the cost paid by Fesco and difference between sale and purchase was being paid from the subsidy provided by government.

Ahmed Saeed Akhtar regretted continuous loadshedding during last few days and said this situation would gradually improve with increase in the power generation.

Orders setting up body to probe substandard construction work | Ensures proper utilisation of public funds

Online

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the era of loot and misuse of development funds is over and proper utilisation of every penny of public money will be ensured.

This was stated by him during inspection of Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology and other development projects in Faisalabad Tuesday. Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad, MNAs Ch Abid Sher Ali and Haji Muhammad Akram Ansari, MPAs Rana Muhammad Afzal, Raza Nasrullah Ghumman, Amir Joel Salhotra, Chief Secretary Punjab, Secretary Health, DG Anti-Corruption Punjab, Commissioner Faisalabad Division and other senior officers were present.

He said third party audit system has been made compulsory for ensuring transparency in all mega development projects. He said Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology should be completed in very respect within three months so that modern treatment facilities could be available to cardiac patients.

He also issued instructions for the formation of a committee to be headed by prominent cardiologist Dr Shaheryar for the completion of the hospital within stipulated period and provision of modern treatment facilities to the patients on the pattern of Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore. He also ordered setting up of a committee for holding an inquiry into substandard construction work of the cardiology institute.

The chief minister said over Rs one billion had been spent on Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology but the desired results had not been achieved and only those facilities are being provided in the institute as were available to cardiac patients in general hospitals. He said even surgery had not been started in the hospital nor had operation theatres been completed.

He said though the building had been completed but proper facilities were not available to cardiac patients. He expressed his surprise over the fact that laundry and sterilisation machines had not been purchased. He said that for the purpose of appointment of highly qualified and specialist doctors, softening of appointment policy would be considered in the interest of availability of best treatment facilities to the patients. He also issued instructions for the construction of the hospital for child cardiac patients in Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology instead of some other place.

He took strict notice of the alleged substandard construction work of the hospital and directed Chief Minister's Inspection Team and Secretary Planning & Development to hold an inquiry.

He also directed Secretary Health to look into the import of stunts for cardiac patients from abroad so that they could be provided for government hospitals only at the import price.

He said Dr. Shaheryar as Executive Director of Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology will have all powers and he will ensure provision of modern treatment facilities to the cardiac patients of Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, TT Singh, Mianwali and other adjacent areas at the institute even if machinery and other medical equipments needed to be imported by air. He said after Multan Cardiology Centre, Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology will be completed within three months.

Please, no more inauguration plaque ceremony pictures. They make me sick. If we took the level of thought, effort and quality of material/workmanship that we do for these plaques and applied it to everything, Pakistan would be a first world country with first class people by now.

Hi

Faisalabad is an Asian Manchester wherein the main economic activies are being done in various sectors. As per international reporting, this city the third most important city economically in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. But the interesting point to note is that the development ratio is slightly higher even than these big cities.

According to a study released in 2007, that surveyed the 2005 GDP of the top cities in the world, calculated Faisalabads GDP (PPP) to be $10 billion. The city was third behind Karachi ($55 billion) and Lahore ($28 billion). Faisalabad's GDP is projected to rise to $24 billion in 2020 at a growth rate of 6.0%, higher than the growth rates of 5.8% and 5.9% predicted for Karachi and Lahore.

Ghantaghar is the centre of main economic activities at Faisalabad. It is known by its Eight Bazars.

PSSI medical college for Faisalabad

Staff Reporter

LAHORE: A Punjab Social Security Institution (PSSI) medical college will be established at Faisalabad with the cost of Rs 130 million, which would not only help provide professional education to the children of the workers but would also improve medical facilities for the families of the labourers, said Provincial Labour and Human Resources Minister Muhammad Ashraf Khan Sohna, while presiding over the PSSI eight-member committee meeting which was constituted on the directions of Punjab chief minister.

Members of Punjab Assembly Dr Saeed Elahi, Dr Asad Ashraf, Dr Farrukh Javaid and Secretary Labour Qazi Afaq Ahmad, PESSI Commissioner Dawood Ahmad alongwith others attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed the scope, expenditure, number of seats and merit policy of the medical college in detail.

The meeting decided to establish the college at Faisalabad instead of Lahore to cover a large number of workers eligible children.

Provincial Labour Minister Muhammad Ashraf Khan Sohna said that the project will not only provide a facility of getting better education to the children of working class but with the revenue collected through the fees of affording students, the college would work on self supporting basis.

The committee decided to present their recommendations for the approval of Punjab chief minister.

i have read quite a number of times that people consider fsd just a big village. i think its totally unfair. with 2 five star hotels, thriving shopping malls comparable to lahore, foreign food chains, blooming industry and sufficiently good roads and community services, fsd is truly a city much better than many cities of pakistan.

President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday inaugurated another series of development projects in the country’s textile hub aimed at improving electricity transmission and distribution system. The President who is in Punjab on over a week long visit to interact with the masses, review development projects and launch a series of new projects arrived here by road, owing to bad weather.

It has clean and wide roads, there are many roads that are like Jail road of Lahore, there is a big market called D-plaza, its same like Liberty market of lahore, even bigger than that, The clock tower and its surrounding roads are constructed in a very good sequence, but the only thing that will piss u off there is the illegal acquisition of the footpaths by the shop keepers , and some illegal car/bike parking. I could not get the time to take some pictures, the only snap that i could capture was of the Faisalabad canal. This canal is far more beautiful than that of the Lahore canal.here u can see in these pics.

Pakistan's 3rd largest city,
Pakistan's 2nd largest industrial city,
Pakistan's largest revenue generator after Karachi,
Home of 8 million people,
City with one of the best roads in the country,
City which has 5 universities of its own and campuses of more than two dozen universities and other degree awarding institutes,
City with 3 medical and two dental colleges with regional office of College of Physicians and surgeons of Pakistan,
City which has hosted international matches of cricket, Hockey, Kabadi and other sports,
City with one 5 star, two 4 star and many 3 and 2 star hotels. wheres four to six further 4 star hotels are planned or under construction,
City linked with motorway network via M3 and in future via M4 also,
Linked with Lahore via beautiful 4 lane dual carriageway in addition to the motorway,
City having some of the tallest buildings in the Punjab,

But still government gives it no importance and most of the projects are completed with the co-operation of local Industrialists and other citizens.

Although the 60 % of the cases in Punjab High Court are from Faisalabad but still high court bench has not been established here.

Faisalabad region has 30 million population (1/6 of Population of Pakistan) wheres Rawalpindi, Multan and Bahawalpur have high court benches despite of far lesser than Fsd in Population.

Regency plaza so far has been famous as a market of travel agencies. But now its going to be extended horizontally as well as vertically. Its L shaped building which is i think of 8 or 9 floors has already been erected. Project also includes a four star hotel in one side of the L where other side will be used for offices etc. However its a beautiful project just infront of Chenab club on Mall road. Good thing is this that this project is in its last phase of completion.

I meant proportionally. Faisalabad has developed tremendously in the last 10 years. It has more malls than Karachi now.

The rise of the Pakistani middle class: International brands compete for Faisalabad’s attention

http://i1.tribune.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/354707-BagsPHOTOCREATIVECOMMONS-1332645668-514-640x480.jpg
Most of the sales of branded clothing and jewellery is taking place through franchises that have bought the right to sell these products to consumers in Faisalabad.

Faisalabad has historically been a city that conducted the manufacturing for global brands. Yet as the middle class in Pakistan expands, it appears that many of the city’s residents are affluent enough – or aspirational enough – to become consumers of those brands, resulting in booming sales for retailers and local franchisees of international brands.

Most of the sales of branded clothing and jewellery is taking place through franchises that have bought the right to sell these products to consumers in Faisalabad. The demand for these products is fuelled by the vast segment of the middle class that can afford to buy global brands but not necessarily to fly out to Dubai – or even to Karachi and Lahore – to buy them.

A series of interviews conducted by The Express Tribune, both amongst consumers and retail managers, suggests a voracious and growing appetite for branded clothing lines. And it seems that the economic slowdown has done nothing to decrease sales in this segment of the market.

“The higher income buyers of international brands never seem to get affected by economic disorder in the country,” said Sohail Safdar, a franchise manager for Charles & Keith, the Singapore-based company that sells its own brand of women’s shoes and bags. “Many of our buyers do not want to have to travel abroad to buy these products. That has created a boom in retail sales and led many retail franchise owners to think hard about expansion.”

“Sales of international brands keeps getting better and better and has begun to lure in even more brands,” said Syed Suleman Raza, a manager at one of the Nike franchises in Faisalabad.

The underlying cause of the trend seems to be a willingness by a large part of the Pakistani middle class to be willing to pay significantly higher prices for what they perceive to be higher quality. And given their longer durability, many branded products are seen as good value for money.

“Branded tend to be more and last two to three seasons,” said Sonia Razzaq, a shopper at one of the upscale malls in Faisalabad.

Nonetheless, prices are steep for many products, with shoes frequently costing Rs5,000 per pair or more. Jackets, shirts and women’s dresses go for even higher, commanding prices in the range of Rs10,000 or higher. These prices are well beyond the reach of most ordinary Pakistanis and yet a sizeable proportion of the population can easily afford them.

“Our customers are very brand-conscious and buy these products without any hesitation at the price tag or any attempt at bargaining,” said Sheikh Sultan, a manager at a franchise of The Body Shop, a UK-based cosmetics brand.

Nice to see development in Faisalabad also.

Faisalabad sees alot of development we just do not have a contact in FSD that can provide us with the information and pictures sadly. I only visit the city once a year as I am usually in Lahore most of the time and do not have the time to document the developments.

Its true , and then people blame that only development is in Lahore. I went to FSD back in December and it was way way better than before. All new roads and parks etc... I'm sure same goes for all other major towns as well.

It's got to do with the traffic. Faisalabad airport has throughput of under 200,000 passengers per year. That's the sort of traffic of a small town, not a big city. Even Quetta has more traffic than that.

Don't ask me why there's such low air travel for such a big city.

According to the 2010 census estimates, Faisalabad's population was 5,000,000. Estimate for 2020 is 8,592,000, which makes it the second largest city in Pakistan, after Karachi. It is considered to be one of the 100 largest cities of the world

If the motorway network was good (M4, M5) from Faisalabad, I'm pretty sure, people would prefer to Land in Faisalabad instead of Lahore or even Multan. Also Faisalabad Airport needs lobbying in airline industry and a low fare airline.

This is true, LYP - Faisalabad has on many occassions requested for funds but they have not been supplied anything. Fasialabad has great potential to be a major exporter internationally.. lots of textiles and raw materials there! :ohno:

FAISALABAD:
“Earlier, Faisalabad was known for its roads, now it will be known for its parks,” Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said on Wednesday as he inaugurated the Shahbaz Sharif Park in Ghulam Muhammadabad area.
He said he felt proud to inaugurate a “grand” recreational park in one of the most congested areas of the city.
The chief minister said that the project had been proposed in 1998, but was shelved when the PML-N government was removed in 1999. The successor government never took up the project, he said.
He said the Parks and Horticulture Authority and the Faisalabad Development Authority had to remove stagnant water from the grounds before the park could be developed.
He said that the people living around this park were being shifted to Shahbaz Nagar, where the government was building model houses.
He said while the land for the houses had been provided by the provincial government, local philanthropists were helping with the construction of houses.
The chief minister also announced plan for a home economics college in Faisalabad and a Model Bazaar in the Ghulam Muhammadabad area. He also announced a Rs50 million grant for development projects in Qudratabad and Usman Towns.
He also announced Rs50,000 for a blind girl, Nadia Bano, and Rs25,000 for a deaf boy, Qari Amin, who presented naat and recited verses from the Holy Quran, respectively, at the ceremony.
