Its funny, the I&M tower barely gets a look from most Nairobians. Its just another skyscraper among many and a landmark for Kenyatta avenue at best. When people think of Nairobi, they first think of the KICC or Times Tower. (maybe its because these two have been around for much longer than I&M.)

IMO i just think that they should make the cbd a mixed use area. i.e more malls movie theaters and casual stuff like that hence it will be more bustling and trully be a 24hr city. btw guyz what the heck happpened to the kicc imrovement plan???

Thats the most likely future for Nairobi's C.B.D. Going by the rate at which companies are moving their headquarters to Upperhill, Westlands and Mombasa road, the office towers will have to find new tenants and some will most likely be turned into high-end apartments.

As for 24 hour business, There's a plan to first turn two streets in the C.B.D.- Koinange street and Mama Ngina street into pedestrian friendly streets with entertainment joints and pavement cafe's running 24 hours a day. Koinange street will most likely be the pioneer for this project. Stores, bars and restaurants here and the Nakumatt lifestyle mall may soon start 24 hour operations. Some adjustments will soon be made to the street (which I think will be converted to one way traffic) and a brand new park on the street behind city market is already under construction.

As for KICC, I dont have any information on the progress being made there.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.:)

u might be on to something there muhana, bcoz awhile ago i read in the newspaper that during the first exploration by shell they sunk a well in N.E kenya and it yielded 9litres of oil!!!(stored byNOCK) as u know it was in moi era and when they were about to go full speed into exploration he pulled off the plug, WHY???:dunno:

I can only add Upperhill, Westlands, Mombasa road and different suburb pics to the list. Other malls-Prestige plaza, Nakumatt Lifestyle, The Mall, Capital Centre (there are very few pics of these places). Maybe some interesting Matatu's. If possible, there's the USIU library and the National museum (if opened) Doctors Plaza in hurlingham next to Nairobi Hospital.

Just watch out for guards in the malls as they will most likely refuse pics being taken inside them. Otherwise have a nice trip home.

Ok people my flight is leaving in like 6 hrs time so,next time i'll be posting i will be in the green city under the sun.Nway sure i will take pics of the roads and all those places you guys have mentioned.I just hope the internet speeds in Kenya have improved so that i can upload the pictures faster.

The National park is within city limits (I guess its the only one of its kind in the world). I'd guess its a 10-15 minute drive from the CBD and is rapidly getting surrounded by suburbs.

Wazii Ernest. How does the place feel. does it feel more developed. positive? The pictures look positive but whats the mood on the ground

there are new buildings,and it certainly feels and looks like more people have money in their pockets.The biggest problem is prices have skyrocketed.The elections have clouded most of the gains made.Nairobi is more disorganized now than a couple of months ago(as my friends tell me).Hawkers are back on the streets in big numbers.The government is afraid of forcefully removing them for fear of losing potential votes.

Some of the roads are in tip top condition but some are in pathetic conditions.Especially roads in Industrial Area.

Most people just want the elections to b over and things to go back to normal.

What i like most is that the new Malls look awesome, Westgate Mall, Karen(Crossroads).
Also the nightlife is more vibrant,i was walking on the streets at 11 pm yesterday and there were still people walking all over the place.Thisw is due to the 24 hour Nakumatt Lifestyle and also the several 24 hour pubs.Nairobi at night looks amazing.All the street lights are working!

i love the pics thank u loads earnest. actually that 'KOBE' mathree was the first one i boarded when i got to nairobi, headind to burubru estate. its just FREAKIN' WICKED!!! esp inside where behind every seat is a dvd screen. its only in nairobi where public transport vehicles are so pimped out.

And it may continue to rise. I guess its because of the new taxes placed on paperbags/ plastic packaging and also wheat production in Kenya has been affected by climate change. Its not just Kenya, even in Uganda and I guess the region is having simmilar problems.

The building is not Kenol kobil tower. Its ICEA Building. (Insuarance company of east africa) it was opeaned in 1982. Inside, it has some of the best lifts i have seen in my life. They also have clear glass views of the city as you go up.

Te building houses the Headquarters of Kenol Kobil. (hence the display outside.) It is probably the best maintained building in Nairobi. Take a walk inside and you will understand why i say that

I've never seen live TV, but I have seen a flat LCD screen playing music videos - that was my favorite matatu ride.

Thats because the chaos was in the major slums and low income areas, especially in Kibera. The rest of the city was dead since everyone else decided to stay inside their houses and keep off the C.B.D.

Glad the violence is over. Nairobi is now back to normal (though I dont know for how long this will last).

Spoke to people on the ground - Nairobi itself (outside slum areas) is back to normal, rural areas especially western Kenya there's no fuel and shortage of other commodities including food - but things are looking up.

The big problem is the displaced persons who are having a rough time - hopefully things will calm down and those damn politicians sort out their problems !!!

My memory card froze and stopped working while i was loading them on the computer.I had to format it for it to start working again.So i lost all the pictures.They were about 40 pics.

going home, i was planning a holiday mid this year but we have decided against it. My lady has never been to africa so we have decided to go to Tanzania instead. Is the closest thing to kenya thats safe. Ill try get some pics of Dar and Zanzibar when im there.

the kenya shilling is now almost at pre kibaki levels. We have managed to rewind all the gains we have made the in the last 5 years. I fear for where kenya will end up if this goes on. we might be compeeting with Zimbabwe for High inflation rates.

Things like this make me Belive that Africans are truely less evolved than europeans. We love to destroy and are well and truely blood thirsty.

Good review of Nairobi

Hi Everyone,

We are on a much faster internet connection so we can finally write our entry about our short stay in Nairobi. Unfortunately we can't post any pictures yet. It seems so far all the internet cafes we have come across will not let you upload anything onto their systems. I guess in case of a virus. Hopefully we will be able to post some soon.

We arrived quite late at the Nairobi airport and our hotel shuttle picked us up. Although the 20 minute ride was on a highway we got our first taste of Africa right away. The driver pointed out dozens of gazelles along the side of the road.

At our hotel it was a madness of traffic and people, even at the late hour of midnight. We were warned about the dangers of Nairobi, and it was apparent right from our arrival. We had to walk thorough security guards and a metal detector to enter our hotel. Once inside it was a warm and friendly welcome though.



I slept well being so exhausted from a lack of sleep from the days before. Jack was not so lucky. The whole realization of what we were doing and the immediate culture shock were a bit too much to handle. He was awake most of the night worrying about what kind of challenges we would have to face the next day.

We were both up at 6am , our bodies were so out of whack from the time change. We found a complimentary postcard on the desk in our room. It was an artists rendition of the area outside our hotel. To our surprise it shows among the buildings and people a man running away with a ladies purse and a policeman with his back to the whole incident. The bottom of the card reads "It happens at the Hilton" How nice even the hotel depicts the crime on their postcards! When we looked out the window we were shocked to see tons of people already scurrying about the streets. It was way busier at 6am than any given hour in downtown Vancouver .

After breakfast we asked if there were any areas of the city we should avoid. We were told to stick to an area of about 4 square city blocks to the west of our hotel. Any where else you wanted to go you were advised to take a taxi. I don't know if it is really that bad in Nairobi or if this is a ploy of the hotels to keep you at the hotel. That way they hope you will spend more money. Or maybe they just want to make money from arranging taxi rides for you.

In the hotel and on the streets as we walked we got pestered by people. Most of them chanting safari, safari, and shoving pamphlets in our face. The main reason tourists come to Nairobi is to take a Safari. I don't think many people come to just visit the city. Our anxiety levels started to rise as we felt more an more uncomfortable, there didn't seem to be many other tourists so we were more of a target for the touts selling stuff.

We wanted to book a safari but didn't know who we could trust, you have to be very careful, there are lots of rip offs. Even the people in our hotel seemed dodgy. Considering they want cash too is of a concern. We ditched into another hotel known as a travelers hangout. We approached a family with 3 small children. We asked if they had booked anything. It turned out they are a family from Squamish B.C. and have been living in Tanzania for the last 2 years because of the husbands work. They were just in Kenya for a few days to do some Xmas shopping. They could see how stressed we were and offered to help in anyway they could. They suggested getting out of Kenya and coming to Tanzania to do a safari. It is much more laid back in Tanzania and thought we would feel more comfortable.

They were nice enough to give us a ride to the shopping mall they were headed to. I can't even begin to describe the traffic. We thought we had seen it all in our past travels through Greece and Turkey . This was beyond compare. Cars were zig zagging in all directions, cutting each other off, making up their own lanes as they go along and parking in the road, even on the highway. Speeding traffic was everywhere with pedestrians weaving there way through it like they were invincible to being hit! Even the highway was madness, you have to keep your windows up and the doors locked. People are walking up the sides of the road and down the middle of the lanes through the traffic trying to sell you anything from plastic beach balls to live puppies!

We finally arrived at the mall in one piece, barely! It was very modern, once inside it was just like a big mall in Vancouver. We felt comfortable there knowing we were not going to be bothered by anyone.

Anyways we have the contact info for the family in Tanzania, we will be calling them and the wife will help us arrange a safari through a friend of hers. She is willing to help us with anything else we may need. We are getting the heck out of Nairobi , the family is used to Africa and even they said they feel uneasy here. They have given us a hotel recommendation in the town of Arusha in Tanzania. We have booked a shuttle bus to get there. Ahhhh stress relief for both of us. Our recommendation if you are coming to East Africa, skip Nairobi and pay the extra to fly to Tanzania to do your safari or make sure you have your safari and other arrangements prebooked so that you are not having to do it when you are in Nairobi. I'm sure lots of people have had great experiences in Kenya once you get outside of the big cities like Nairobi . For us it was a little too much all at once. Maybe Nairobi was not the best choice for our first place to visit on this trip.

Despite the fact that we were probably magnifying how we felt because of this being our first stop on the trip, we just didn't feel welcomed here at all. We couldn't even get a hello or thank you from clerks in the few shops and food markets that we went into.

Nairobi was not as hot as we thought it would be, I think it was about 70F. They have the Kenyan shilling as their money. About 74 shilling equals 1 US dollar. From what we could see most of the city is derelict looking skyscrapers and buildings, very industrial looking. Across from our hotel were 3 small take out places all in a row. Pizza Inn, Chicken Inn, and Creamy Inn, don't ask! It took us almost an hour to figure out how to work a payphone with an international phone card. They have a 6 day work week, and start the day very early. I think it is because the sun sets early at 6pm.

It's forced multiculturalism. Numerous ethnic groups were involuntarily forced into one area in many parts of Africa, Kenya being no exception. Conflict was bound to follow-it happened to Europe a couple times(armenian genocide and yugoslavia) and it'll happen in Africa to.

I think the thing I love the most about Nairobi is the greenery as is apparent in the way they landscape their gardens. Even in apartment complexes where there isn't much space, they make sure they reserve some for lawns and trees.:banana::banana::banana:

Hi everybody! I'm new in SSC... and I enjoyed the development in African cities... I see a prosperous future for this continent.

For me, here in Brazil, if I'll depend on the media here, Kenia will be a big "Kibera". It´s not good.

By the way... out of curiosity... how many people does live in Kibera Slum? As I see the pics, I imagine that the poverty is diminishing in Nairobi. Am I right?
