Any public transport plans for Nairobi, this city is so beutiful.

The city probably has one of the best bus systems in the continent but we have minibuses as well although they are being faced out bit by bit by every new legislation that comes to be. There is a plan for a huge overground raill network but most of them are from the outer ring of the CBD to the Suburbs. The place has a lot of room for improvement and im sure, with good governance, it will get there in a decade or so.

Nairobi has a good looking skyline, but it can use maybe 2-3 new buildings btwn 35-50 floors and possibly higher (remember, Nairobi has about the same population as Chicago and they put up 60 floor towers with pretty much little thought), but Nairobi is very special because it is modern and African at the same time, which many other modernizing cities seem to lose,

The street level one was working just fine last time I checked. and theres another one a few metres down the street on Imenti house I think. maybe they want to cram that corner of Kenyatta avenue with electronic signage like times square LOL.

The Business Daily,
Written by Beatrice Gachenge and Wangui Maina
May 27, 2008:

On the first Sunday of March 2009, Nairobi’s Lang’ata Road will wake up to the sight of a new shopping mall. If all goes according to plan.

It will be the eleventh shopping mall to grace Nairobi’s skyline and potential tenants are already lining up for space.

The mall, which is expected to house about 30 tenants, is evidence of a growing appetite for shopping space in the city. This appetite has seen developers increase their investment in commercial buildings with two other malls expected on Thika and Kiambu roads in the next two years.

These new shopping centres are an indication of increased purchasing power among Kenya’s emerging middle-class with disposable income to spend on luxury goods.

Knight Frank, a property company that is managing most of Nairobi’s malls and overseeing the development of new ones, says it is currently swamped with demand for space both from local and international brands.

Several international brands have expressed interest in the Lang’ata Road mall, including a German car maker who is looking at the property as an avenue to re-enter the Kenyan market.

Cotts, a renowned British furniture brand, has also expressed interest in letting space at the Lang’ata Road mall to establish a foothold in the country. The appetite for space in shopping malls has been whetted by the success of Westgate, the first to attract major international brands.

Located in Westlands, it opened its doors a year ago. This facility, which has been billed as ultra-modern by its developers, boasts of iron wrought railings and a refreshing waterfall at the entrance, has attracted international brand shops ranging from world renowned sports houses Nike and Adidas, to clothes shop United Colors of Benetton.

Converse has also set up camp on the ground floor with international watch maker Rado set to open a store. The mall has also provided space for local brands such as Kazuri, Little Soles, Sir Henry, and Dormans among others to expand, while Artcafe and Johari have made their debut.

Maina Mwangi, the head of property management Knight Frank, says this is Kenya’s first mall to host so many international brands under one roof.

Knight Frank also manages The Junction on Nairobi’s Ngong Road and Crossroads in Karen.

Mr Mwangi says that location is part of the success of the malls business in Nairobi. “The best location is outbound allowing access as people head out of the city,” he said.

Left side

This is why most of the malls are on the left side of the major highways out of the city. According to him a mall on Thika Road has taken a longer time due to scarcity of land on the left side of the road. This side of the highway spots the National Youth Service, General Service Unit and Nakumatt on the left.

“The only available space is near Roysambu, which on the other hand, fails to make much business sense to proprietors who would want to capitalise on prime property,” he said.

For this reason Thika Road’s mall will have to be on the right hand side of the road. These new developments have moved the country far from what it was 10 years ago when it had only two major shopping malls, Sarit Centre in Westlands, and Yaya Centre in Kilimani — some of Nairobi’s high-end districts.

Commercial property development in Westlands has reached a near deadlock due to scarcity of land as it takes a minimum of five acres of land to construct a modern facility.

Population is another major factor that influences the decision to put up a mall in any part of the city. Human traffic determines how popular and viable a mall model is and the potential of its success.

Id rather have them paint after 3 months than not at all. Im sure they will realise there are better ways of maintaining the paint over longer periods sooner or later.

Unfortunately, I didn' get the chance to get to the machakos turnoff but I understand that alot of work is going on at Athi river where they are putting up an interchange.

I decided to travel to Nairobi from Kampala by road and noticed that the new dual carriage highway in Nakuru is almost finished for the most part. There is also a new flyover before you enter Naivasha town.

Nakuru seems to be the fastest growing town in Kenya, It now has plenty of new buildings with glass fronts and I think I noticed some new fairly tall office blocks. A new mall (I think) is getting built on the highway to Nairobi and there are plenty of new suburbs springing up especially to the west of the town. IMO, it will be Kenya's 3rd largest town in a few years.

Relief for motorists as work on bypasses begins

Published on June 13, 2008, 12:00 am

By Dann Okoth

Traffic jams in Nairobi and its environs could soon ease following the start of work on three bypasses.

When the bypasses are completed, most of Nairobi roads will be decongested as vehicles coming from the Coast and upcountry will not have to pass through the city centre.

According to the Ministry of Roads and Public Works, construction work is now underway on the 72km long Eastern and Northern bypasses at a cost of Sh8.5 billion. The Government is also undertaking to gravel the 30km Southern bypass in a bid to make it navigable.

"The Eastern and Northern bypasses project being undertaken by a Chinese firm, is expected to be complete in two years and will reduce traffic jams in the city," says Mr Richard Abura, the Director of Communications at the Ministry of Roads and Public Works.

The 32km Northern bypass starts from Ruaka trading centre on Limuru Road, passes over Banana Road and runs through Runda to cross the Kiambu Road at Ridgeways. It then passes near the United States International University, intersects Kamiti Road at Githurai and crosses Riara and Kamiti rivers.

The 40km Eastern bypass begins near City Cabanas on Mombasa Road and runs through Kangundo Road to connect with Ruiru, Kiambu, near Kamiti prison. The first five kilometres will be a dual carriageway in addition to a modern interchange.

Abura says interchanges, which will replace obsolete roundabouts, will reduce traffic jams.

"An interchange is a flyover that replaces an intersection or a roundabout. It improves the flow of traffic," he says.

He said Thika Road would comprise 10 lanes, five in either direction, to complement the efficiency of the bypasses.

The proposed Southern bypass, however, has to wait until a concessionaire comes along before it can be constructed.

Abura said interested firms are in talks with the Government. He would not reveal the amount of money involved, but discussed the process:

The winning bidder constructs the road and manages it for 30 years upon paying a fee to the Government.

thats great news kenguy. When i was in Kenya during the december holidays,i stopped over at Nakuru and i was amazed. The town has transofrmed so fast.

Once the dual carriageway is complete, the town's development will rapidly increase.

I think the competition now is between Nakuru and Eldoret for 3rd place.By the way which is the 5th biggest town in Kenya?
I am guessing Machakos or Thika.

thats great news kenguy.

^^
Thika and Machakos are part of the Nairobi metro area. I'd say the fifth position can be taken by Kericho, Nyeri, Meru and Nanyuki (though Id pick either Nyeri or Kericho).
^^
I went to Langata yesterday and noticed they have started building the mall next to the Mbagathi way/Langata road roundabout (People are calling it Southgate but I've no idea about the name). The area is big though and there is already a crane at the site. There is also a tower coming up behind NSSF tower in upperhill.

And to think that these guys are paid "hardship allowance" just because they live in an African city. The UN employees basically live in the best areas of the city and have access to the best of everything, schools, hospitals e.t.c.

Barack Obama and the graveyard of hope

by wambui mwangi

I am finding it very difficult to join in the jubilation about senator barack obama. Not that i want to deny the man his victory, but my impulse to celebrate keeps deflating on the idea that the best thing that happened to little barack was not growing up in kenya.

I have been imagining alternative trajectories for him if he had come to know the world through the eyes of a kenyan citizen, if his mother and grandparents had not rescued him from our chaos and contradictions and brought him up somewhere his intellect and talent could grow.

If he had grown up here, and had he somehow managed to retain most elements of his current self, he would have been another outstanding, intelligent and competent luo man in our midst: and he would have been killed.

Yes, we would have assassinated a barack obama if he had remained ours, with us, one of us here in this schizophrenic cauldron we call home. This is not going to stretch the imagination of any kenyan — after all, when we had that incredibly good-looking and charismatic home-grown hero, tom mboya, we shot him to death.

And when that austerely intellectual and elegant leader, robert ouko, threatened to look overly intelligent to the world, we killed him too. We killed pio gama pinto and we killed jm kariuki. There is no reason to suppose that barack obama, whose integrity of purpose and stringent sense of ethics even his enemies concede, would have survived his kenyan roots.

He is much too intelligent, too charged with the promise of history, too bold in his claim to a shining destiny, too full of the audacity of hope, for us to have let him survive. Kenya would have killed barack obama, or at least his dream, as we inevitably destroy, in one way or another, the best and the boldest of us. Goldenberg whistle blower david munyakei’s challenge to his country to be bigger than our greed was met with a whimper, and then with rapid abandonment. We did not deserve him, either.

As for john githongo, he should have known better than to take the idea of public ethics seriously — this is kenya, after all. Let him enlighten people at oxford instead; such considerations are too virtuous for us, too sensible, too conducive to a promising future. We do not even remark on the haunting wastage of all this shining accomplishment — micere mugo sings her lyrical poetry for americans, and we do not even know enough to mourn the loss.

And yet we are all enchanted with the power of the idea of barack obama, the hope of him, the beauty of his life’s trajectory, the universe of possibilities and probabilities that it conjures for the least of the rest of us. If someone’s cousin’s friend’s neighbour makes it to the united states... Then we all have a chance. We have a strange predilection for schizophrenic loves and loyalties; we let geography dictate our alliances and imaginary lines decide our friends. It is as if our social contract states that here, at home, we are obliged to behave like fighting rats to each other but when abroad, when released from the shackles of kin and clan and conclave, we can fly and soar and master the sky.

When wangari maathai is abroad, we feel that her nobel prize is partly represented in each of our kenyan living rooms; when she comes home, she is just another kikuyu politico. We preen about our athletes winning yet another international competition to anybody who will give us half a chance, but when they are at home we turn them into more fodder for militias. Caine prize winners are kenyan by automatic assent, but binyavanga wainaina is a kikuyu writer when at home and yvonne owuor is indelibly a luo — we shrink them to fit the midget-sized visions we have of ourselves. It is clear to all of us, and the evidence continues to accrue, that we have, collectively, a certain global competence, as kenyans, that we produce individuals of substance and historical purpose.

Being kenyan, however, we prefer to drown in the pettiness of our parochial quarrels when at home, and if one of us threatens to be too hopeful, too ambitious, too intelligent, too creative or too inspirational to fit into our trivial little categories of hatred and suspicion, we kill them, or exile them from our societies, or we just cause them to run away inside, hiding from us and from themselves the grandeur of their souls, the splendid landscapes of their imagined tomorrows. Nothing but the worst for us, at home. We recognise each other by our most rancid rhetoric.

We insist upon it, we cultivate it, we elevate it to an art form: kenyan, and quarrelsome. Kenyan, and clannish. Kenyan, and counter-productive. Kenyan, and self-destructive. Kenyan, and consistently heart-breaking. Genius everywhere, and not a thought to be had. Promise and potential everywhere, and not an opportunity to be had. Money everywhere, and not an honest penny to be earned. Helicopters aplenty, but no help for the needy. A land awash in cabinet ministers and poverty.

I have been watching kenyans getting high on obamamania, and i am wondering what we are so happy about? it is perhaps that we are beginning to acknowledge what we should always have known — given a half a chance, an ever so slightly conducive context, kenyans are more likely to over-achieve than not. At the faintest provocation, kenyans will leap past expectations without breaking their stride or breaking a sweat, especially if they happen to have escaped the imprisoning edifice we call home and found foreign contexts to flourish in, no matter how alien.

I went to a town in the canadian arctic once, in the far north, where in summer the sun shines even at midnight and in the winter the world is an endless landscape of ice and snow. Here, far, far away from home, where nothing was familiar except the gentleness of elderly inuit women and the comforting weirdness of the white residents, i was told that the local dentist had, for many years, been a kenyan. Everybody said he had been an excellent dentist, out there in the desert of the cold. I was unsurprised.

We are an adventurous people, we kenyans, and we take to the world outside our home as if born to a conquistador culture — we are brave and brash and bold, out there. We buy and sell things, and make money at it, out there. We go to school and excel and cover ourselves with accreditations, out there. We win things, out there. We get prizes, out there. We are at our best, out there.

However, at home, for some reason we refuse to either acknowledge or examine — we have chosen simply to set aside this capacity. Here, at home, nothing but the very lowest common denominator will do; nothing but the basest and most brutal aspects of our selves are to be presented to each other; nothing but the most cynical manipulation is the basis of our political space.

We prefer to be ruled by individuals whose mediocrity is matched only by their mendacity, here at home. We prefer to abdicate our adult responsibilities and capacity for reason to “leaders” whose lack of virtue is as legendary as our attractively exotic pastoralists. We do not only waste talent, here at home — we go out of our way to suppress and repress it. We do not only deny dreams, here in kenya — we devour them, and ask each other, “who do you think you are?” as if the success of another is an affront.

In kenya, grand vision and soaring imagination is illegitimate; here, they just call you naive. Out there, you stand a chance of becoming a hero; at home, you will have nothing but the taste of ashes in your mouth. Mothers, take your children abroad.

Barack obama has written two books, in which he discusses ideas. Ideas. This is a man with vision and conviction, and enough good ideas that even those who do not like the pigmentally-advantaged are listening, and changing their minds. Even those who think that his name sounds suspiciously like a terrorist’s are reading his books and listening to his speeches, and changing their minds. This is a man with interesting and inspiring things to say — which disqualifies him from any kenyan-ness we would have liked to claim.

Americans like the image of them that barack obama has painted in words; which kenyan leader would dare to build dreams bigger than his roots? which kenyan leader would ever be so foolish as to attempt inspiration instead of instigation? barack obama has seduced the world by the power of his persuasiveness, and while kenyans raise another glass to the accomplishments of “one of our own,” it seems clear to me that we gave up our rights to him when we gave up our hopes for ourselves. When we settled for incompetence, and corruption, and callousness, we defined ourselves out of his universe, and out of his dreams.

We rejected barack obama-ness when we allowed those pangas to slash our dreams, when we watched our hopes spiral away in smoke. We allowed the ones who had done this to become the only mirrors of ourselves, and then squelched our disgraced selves back to the mire of our despondency.

Barack obama cannot be a kenyan, and kenyans cannot grasp barack obama’s dream. We have already despaired of it, and of ourselves. His dream would have died with ours, here at home, here in the graveyard of hope. But oh, how we yearn to see ourselves reflected in his eyes...

Yes. Its now the second largest chain. Tusky's has even gone ahead to buy some Uchumi supermarket branches eg. the Uchumi branch next to the city Market, as well as opening some new branches, many of which resemble departmental stores.

Uchumi however is planning a major comeback and may regain the second position sooner or later (my bet is it will do so next year now that its financial situation is good).

I wish we could have been able to do so with the big companies that were falling down in th eearly 90's.

At least a good number have been revived. If it wasn't for the IMF/World Bank policies, most companies would be far ahead by now.

Speaking of development, there's alot of activity going on in Westlands with Camelot house and another office block being built next to the Safaricom Hq's and also there is a large construction site at the Jacaranda hotel opposite the Sarit Centre. That park loves lovely. Is it safe for tourists to walk around? How is the crime in Nairobi in general? Is it getting better? Are there any initiatives that are helping the situation like in Cape Town with the City Improvement District>?

Crime in nairobi is always a major issue but it is getting better. I have heard there are a few initiatives to increase police presence on the streets which will help. There were mainly 3 types of crimes in nairobi. Car jackings, forcefull extortion by street kids and organised muggings. if you want to have astroll along the city, leave your valuables at home and no one will bother you. otherwise stay within the cleaner streets.

the cbd is pretty safe and the park is very safe too. there is police presence, i heard that the petty theft has almost completely ceased in the park. is the city gatting better? well i think so bcoz they also there is a ministry post created just to make sure that nairobi becomes a world class city with a metropolitan police department. nway visit nairobi sometime im sure u will love it.

Nice Impressions Nairoberry I think Nairobi is bracing itself for its third major construction boom (1st occured late 70's, 2nd late 80's to mid 90's) led by the Government projects, Private sectors and individuals.

This is my favourite.

Sounds like a 1998 report on Nairobi. Street kids in the CBD? I Dont want to argue here and I know Nairobi still has its problems but my opinion is the city is much safer. Especially the CBD.

It used to be a furniture store before it became a drapers shop at the junction of Biashara st. near the city market. It has been around for along time. I think its actually one of those colonial era buildings given a "modern'' glass facade. Speaking of new, there's one office building on K-street opposite the lifestyle mall thats being built. Its moderately tall considering surrounding buildings (at least its taller than the Nginyo towers facing it).

BTW. Im really enjoying the pics. Thanx Nairoberry.

here is the caption that was attached to this picture, i think its a fairly balanced view of nairobi esp from a first time visitor from colorado, USA.

This is my favorite of all the skyscraper pictures. I just found it interesting to note the huge divide between the rich and the poor. In many places in Nairobi, especially the business district, the buildings look no different than you'd find anywhere else in the world, even in America. This picture could just as easily be taken in any large city downtown in the U.S. And we saw people driving Lexus's and other luxury vehicles. We deride SUV owners in the U.S., but SUV's are just as common in Nairobi as in the U.S. But elsewhere in the city is dire poverty
