Nairobi is really awesome. It will really be a great city with a bigger CBD and some tall modern skyscrapers, so maybe another 5-10 years.

kenya is well known giant in terms of sports like marathon, volleyball for women,rugby and cricket. however the moi regime messed up the safari rally by failing to pay the fees, the safari rally used to put the country in the world map.

its time we forget this crab of ethnicity where considers is he luo, kikuyu, luhya and kamba and we have seen the result of the last year elections, after many years of preaching tribal animosity and hatred, we can realize mature democracy when we focus ones manifestoes and his ethnic backround.

the generation y should take responsibility who mostly urbanite and care less ethnic issues, any mature kenyan who is aspiring and has what it takes to lead should go for it, if he is kuria,or somali or turkana so beit. if he can take us the promise land. i also believe its the time the youth should lead us, i am tired of hearing youth are leaders of tommorrow but today is the date.

one think i realized in my beloved country is that when americans were campaigning we were all skeptical that americans of others will not vote for black president and we were passionate about it, hold on.... why we kenyans don,t vote for friends who posses leadership qualities and ruled them out only they come from different tribe, lets stop preaching water drinking wine, i know many might overreact my comments but its time stop sweeping burning issues under the carpet, but coming out and discussing this isues frankly, openly and soberly in order to stop another post election and tribal clashes in the future.:applause: for mwanamiwa

Well the truth is as you say it, kenya is very devided. it is almost imposible to see asians mixing with africans or africans with asians or asians with europeans. The only exceptions is in the wealthy suburbs where money kinda makes them all equal. it is common place to see advertisements for rental flats in nairobi newspapers stating "Asians only" this is ad but true about our country. but as one news agaency put it, in kenya Tribe triumphs over race. there is more hostility, favourtism, and prejudice between different tribes than there are between say asian kenyans and african kenyans.

All this problems problems stem from our leadership though and large illiteracy levels and dare i say a small dose of precolonial politics. politicians normally use the tribe cards to get elected hence exploiting peoples illeteracy for their own good. we have only had about 5 years of steady growth in the last 20 years i have been alive. 2002 - 2007.

The country is currently in what my mum calls "Suspended War" mode. no one is sure what will happen soon and if not checked could easily slip into civil war. but in keeping with the spirit of the thread, we try focus on the good bits about our country because no matter what happens to it, we cant escape the fact that we were born there.

now about the picture, Aga Khan uni is mainly geared towards asian students. there are a few institutions like this (MP SHah hospital) that cater for their needs and i find it hard to knock them for that since if you went to say Kabarak uni (Rift valley) you would find majority of students hail from the Kalenjon Tribe. Probably some form of Social Economic Segregation.

Thats preety much a summary of a 3rd world country in transition.

Kenya like many countries in the world does have self segragation. People tend to stick to their racial group in general although you will find many who do not. I suspect the graduates in the picture where seated by name so you will find alot of Indians whose last name might be Patel or Singh all seated together and the same goes for the Luo in Westen Kenya whose last names usually start with an "O" i.e Onyango.
That's the only plausible explanation because although many do self segragate, I had many friends of all ethinicities in highschool and graduation was the last place we would choose to segragate.

No problem, I like many have sometimes responded to questions without trying to really understand the issue but we are all a work in progress. I believe that respecting someone's opinion whether I agree with it or not is the first step to learning from each other.

^^ i am wondering why mike only picked negative issues of this thread with more than 2000 nice posts & pictures? and africamann becoming the hero overnight, the objective of the thread was to portray the postive parts of nairobi which rest of the world don't know and it should stay that.

let me remind you killing of each other, kenya will not be the first and last, it has happened in rwanda,burundi,congo,uganda,angola,mozambique,algeria all most all africa. even south africa killing innocent foreigners and finally nigeria which is known for tribal and religious war. but i am saying one thing please lets not create unnecessary argument in this nice thread as it happen when first one was in nairaland. if the intention is that, and i shall not be excuse.:ohno:



this post doesn't make sense. in case you haven't noticed that wasn't my first comment in this very thread. I have commented about Nairobi being nice before but at that moment that specific picture caught my attention in a weird way. nothing more nothing less. I can't comment every time I see a picture of a building. tall buildings and clean streets might be a surprise to you every time you see them but not to me. I'm usually concerned about the well being of the citizens (in terms of economic opportunities, political stability and such) than I am about empty malls and roads. not to say I don't appreciate the progress but just putting things in perspective. after all it was just a question, get over yourself. I'm glad everyone doesn't have the same outlook as you. I can't fully comprehend the second paragraph of your post but for you to even to try to justify why there's ethnic violence in Kenya (because other countries do it too) is not only pathetic but also offensive. there are many intelligent Kenyans here that are open minded and confident enough to tackle any topic. as you can see my question was already answered. you obviously not being one of them should leave such topics alone. I'm done with this. now, let's go back to enjoying pictures, shall we...

Hope these are the last pics of the old Thika road.

It will be great when the reconstruction and improvement of the new highway is complete. I would say it will classified as high quality highway with no Junctions or disruption of traffic. Other that widening the road by adding more lanes, they are getting rid of all roundabouts and replacing them with interchanges, underpasses and fly overs. Also the tributaries feeding this road from the city will be greatly improved. Can't wait though it may take a while since the project is massive. Lets say 2011.

^^good work kenguy as usual, anybody with pics of the IKO toilets, i read from the newspapers they are wonderful, those kinds of innovations can solve a lot of problems in the slums.:cheers:

...I took some pics. They are doing the final touches to the newest mall in the city. I hear the anchor store is Tusky's but we will find out when it opens.
