^^ It's a pity that there is no good literature or web page (at least that I know of) listing and describing all Bangladesh hotels / guest houses etc. It's great to see good accommodations in places like Rangamati and Bandarban since I hope to visit them some day...I hope some time a good listing of them is made.

BRAC Centre in Rajendrapur is a cool meeting, conference and a lodging spot.

BCDM, which began is journey in 1991 as a management development institution for upgrading the management capacity of BRAC managers, has now become a most favoured place for holding international, national conferences, annual general meetings, get-togethers, workshops and seminars.

Situated near Bhawal National Park on 21.78 acres of land 50 kilometres from Dhaka, the complex was planned by Architect Mazharul Quader following a similar complex he liked very much in Bangkok. He designed the buildings and other facilities without disturbing the ecology and the bio-diversity of the area. Sixteen years have passed, yet the buildings look strikingly contemporary and the place is full of lakes, trees, flower and fruit plants.

As one drives into the complex, a three-storeyed building comes into view. This is the main building of the complex which houses multipurpose conference hall, 60 air-conditioned guestrooms, a library, a reading room and a business centre. The twin-bedded guestrooms offer lovely views, and are equipped with telephone, colour television with cable connection, and have attached baths with hot and cold water.

A covered walkway set amidst fountains leads to Prajapati and a modern kitchen capable of handling a large number of guests. A Chef with five-star hotel background leads the culinary team that can serve Bangladeshi, Continental, Thai and Chinese cuisine with the freshest materials from around the complex. Guests can ask for Silver Service, Buffet Service or Family service. restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner with different menu options start from Tk 600 only a day.

Three lakeside conference halls are just a minute's walk away, beside a raised space for open air performances. There are four mini-cottages for one-to-one meetings or intimate dining or barbecue, as one may wish.

For the health conscious guests, there is a gymnasium as well as lawn tennis, volleyball and badminton courts and indoor games facilities. The squash court is being renovated.

JRL Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo hopes to invest about Tk 300 crore to develop the resort and shopping malls, open-air theatre stage, shooting spots for the film industry, setting up another museum to highlighting Bengali heritage, arrangements for water sports, a golf course and an air-conditioned river cruiser.

Being developed over 1,200 bighas of land about 100 kilometres from the capital, the resort has 130 air-conditioned suites in 70 cottages, auditorium, conference rooms and dining facilities.

Recreation facilities include three tennis courts, swimming pool, five motor boats including a mechanised country boat and a riverside spot for picnics. What sets it apart is a museum housing a rich collection on bio-diversity of the area.

The suites and other facilities occupy only 130 bighas of land leaving visitors the whole expanse to enjoy the embrace of fresh air and the mighty Jamuna as well as go speed boating on the fast flowing river.

If one wishes to come with a helicopter, there is a helipad. The railway station is only a few minutes' walk away. But if one wishes to go there he or she will have to book suites or picnic spots at least a week earlier at JRL's Dhaka office at Pragati-RPR Centre at Kawran Bazar in the city.

The Zastat Holiday Resort

The picturesque Zastat Holiday Resort Centre at Doloipara village about 9 kilometres off the Sylhet city will draw anybody's attention.

http://www.thedailystar.net/2004/05/11/2004-05-11__nat02.jpg
A panoramic view of Zastat Holiday Resort

Modern recreation facilities created in a natural atmosphere and the green hills around give weary urban dwellers a chance to breathe fresh air and relax, away from the concrete jungle.

It is about three kilometres from Khadimpara on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway.

Though the highway is good, the three 3 kilometre narrow road is unmetalled and rugged. But, once at the resort, it is soothing all around.

A two-storied motel with a standard restaurant on the ground floor has been established on a hilltop. A gymnasium, a sports complex with Billiard table and other indoor games facilities, a lawn tennis and a modern swimming pool caters to the need of visitors of all ages and classes. Children can learn swimming at special discount.

A mini conference room also offers businessmen and officials the scope for work while in a pleasure trip.

There is also a natural lake with a small family picnic spot. A beautiful garden with about 50,000 plants and trees of about 350 species adds to its beauty. Setting up of a mini zoo is also in the process.

"The Zastat Holiday Resort will meet the demand to a great extent", said MC College student Anwar Hossain while talking to this correspondent at the resort recently. He went there along with his friends.

Every day a good number of people come to Sylhet for different purposes including visiting the shrines of great saints Hajrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hajrat Sha Poran (RA). There are also other places of interest in greater Syhet, which attract visitors. There is a good prospect of developing tourism in the region, said Shamsul Haque, a banker.

Setting up of rope line for cable car for movement from one hill to another is going on. Pleasure trip by helicopter is also being planned.

Hotels and restaurants directory published

“Bangladesh Hotels and Restaurants Directory” listing almost all the hotels and restaurants in Dhaka, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet, has been published in Bangladesh for the first time.

The Bangladesh Monitor, the leading travel and tourism journal of the country, and Institute of Culinary Arts jointly brought out the directory, according to a press release.

Kazi Wahidul Alam, editor, The Bangladesh Monitor, said, “Bangladesh has progressed a lot in the field of hotels and restaurants. Quality room nights at five-star as well as moderate accommodations are increasing.”

“People often do not know what would be the best place for their accommodation within their budget and what are the facilities available there, while they are out of their home.”

“We are happy to be able to take the initiative to bring out the Bangladesh Hotels and Restaurants Directory. In this publication we have tried to cover hotels and restaurants in Dhaka, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet. This directory will help Bangladeshis or tourists to find the right place to stay or dine,” Kazi Wahidul Alam said.

The directory is available at all leading bookshops of the country for Tk 200 only.

Mushrooming Hotel Trade on St Martin's
Flora, fauna of lone coral island under threat

The hotels and restaurants that sprang up in the recent past on St Martin's Island, one of the ecologically critical areas (ECA) in the country, have been operating without any official approval.

According to the law, building of any structure and carrying out any activity that might pollute the environment or harm the flora and fauna in an ECA are strictly prohibited.

However, the unauthorised structures mushroomed on St Martin's over the years with law enforcers and government agencies turning a blind eye to the violation.

Concerned about the preservation of biodiversity of the island, the present government is planning to introduce a guideline for building environment-friendly structures on the island, said sources.

A total of 33 privately owned hotels and restaurants are currently doing business on St Martin's -- a 3.34-square-kilometre island with only 5,000 inhabitants. Most of these businesses opened up in last eight years -- soon after the government decided to establish a marine park on the country's lone coral island for the conservation of marine bio-diversity.

This year, on September 29, director of Department of Environment (DoE), Chittagong Division, in a letter said the DoE had never given approval to any hotel or restaurant to operate on the island.

Considering its rich natural biodiversity, the government in a gazette notification declared Saint Martin's an ecologically critical area on April 19, 1999. As a first step to establishing a marine park there, on July 29, the government issued another gazette notification prohibiting activities destructive to the flora and fauna of the island. Extraction of coral, seashell and conch, felling of trees and building structures were declared restricted in the gazette.

The government later undertook a project to conserve the biodiversity, establish a marine park and develop ecotourism facilities on the island.

After years of irregularities, absence of proper monitoring and spending a staggering Tk 13 crore, the project turned out to be a failure.

As a result, growing number of tourists are polluting and damaging the natural habitats of numerous rare species on the island, the sources added.

Commenting on the unauthorised structures on St Martin's, Syeda Rizwana Hossain, director of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers' Association (Bela), said according to the gazette issued by the government, construction of any hotel or restaurant within the ECA is prohibited.

"It's a violation of Sections 5 and 12 of Environment Protection Act. Violators could be punished with a maximum of ten years imprisonment and additional Tk 10 lakh in fine," she added.

Thousands of tourists are thronging St Martin's Island every year for its crystal clear blue seawaters, corals, shells, conch and giant crabs.

According to Saint Martin's Hotel Owners' Association sources, not less than 60,000 people visited the island last year.

The objective of the government-promoted ecotourism project was to ensure an undisturbed habitat for the flora and fauna of the island.

With the project unimplemented and tourists multiplying every year, tourists, the 5,000 locals and 1,000 Rohingya refugees, all are increasingly destroying the island's environment, especially the natural environment of endangered green turtles and Olive Ridley turtles to such an extent that the turtles no longer come to the island to lay their eggs.

"Sea turtles, one of the major indicators of the health of sea, are not getting the suitable environment for laying eggs. Besides, the number of mother turtles is decreasing every year. It will be harmful for our sea as the turtles help keep the sea environment clean," said a government official working at forest and environment ministry.

According to a government report, most of the residential houses and all but four hotels and restaurants on the island do not use ring-slab toilets. Raw sewage and other wastes are discharged in the open environment instead.

In a recent survey conducted by Village Education Resource Center (Verc), a non-government organisation, the presence of coliform bacteria, a serious contaminant when found in food or drinking water, was detected in the groundwater of St Martin's. The presence of the bacteria was detected to be ten times higher than Bangladesh standard.

The same report prepared by the government listed the following as hotels doing business on the island: Seemana Periye, Pacific Resort, Hotel Obokash, Samudra Bilash (non-commercial, established by novelist Humayun Ahmed), Coral Reef, Ocean View, Srabani Bilash, Swapno Probal, Hotel Shaibal-1, Saibal-2, Bay of Bengal Guesthouse, Holiday Home, Blue Marine Resort, Prasad Paradise, Prince Heaven, Riyad Guest, Sea Heart, Island Resort and Neel Doriya.

Restaurants listed in the report are Asma Hotel, Keyari Marzan, Sea Scent Comilla, Sonar Tori, Shaheena, Hotel Al Amin, Saint Martin's Tourism Park, The Royal Restora, Hazi Salam Tourist Park, Allah'r Daan and Marine Drop.

The first commercial business on the island was founded in 1995.

When asked if the business owners on the island are required to acquire any government approval or follow any guideline, president of Saint Martin's Hotel Owners' Association Shiblul Azam Koreshi said, "Nobody told us about any approval or provided any guideline for building structures in an ECA."

Hotel Sea Palace, Cox's Bazar

I just checked the Sea Palace’s website and found the following interesting information:

The presidential suite costs 60,000 taka plus 25% vat and service charge, which brings the total amount to 75,000 taka per night (US$1000+). The royal suite costs 20,000 taka plus 25% vat and service change with a grand total of 25,000 taka (US$300+) per night.

Looking at the photos, the rooms look more like a 2 star (perhaps lower than that) hotel rooms at best. Their outrageously high price tag makes you wonder what the management is thinking and doing. Buy the way, the rate for regular rooms in Westin, the best hotel in BD, is between $150-$200 per night. And Westin is leap year ahead of sea palace when it comes to overall standard. Even Seagul is much cheaper.

Perhaps the owners want to get rich overnight by providing substandard product!

That is the problem with the hospitality (perhaps most other types of business, like restaurants) trade in Bangladesh. I have found that unless it is part of an well known chain, a new establishment shall open with much fanfare, but soon, the quality goes downhill. I stayed at the Best Western La Vinci, in 2006, and I can tell you the pictures make it about much nicer that it really is. The rooms could use a thorough deep cleaning, and the restaurant appears shabby. The folks who provided the services though, were very nice, very accomodating, and of course, very polite (I think that is a Bangladeshi thing for I found Bangladeshi waiters, bellboy, etc., to be the same, outside of Bangladesh).

India has taken a leap in the hospitality business in the last 10/15 years. Even their small hotels are of very good quality. I think the reason the quality is poor in Bangladesh is because few people are knowledgeable let alone formally trained in the business. For this to improve, more colleges and universities should offer hospitality (as well as airline, not pilots but all other types) degrees, and more private institutes should offer the same. This way, not only quality shall improve in local markets but provide a source of employment for graduates, outside of Bangladesh.

Hey Guys,
I'm at Dhaka now. It's good to be home. The weather is pleasant but traffic is horrible. Internet is ok. I will post some interesting photos soon. It looks like Hotel Sonargoan project is completed stalled. All I see is the new boundary wall and unfinished swimming pools. Nothing is near done. It's sad to see the fate of this nice hotel. I used to visit that place often and I think the hotel had it's potential to be one of the best in town. Anyway, I will post the photos as soon as I can.

Prasad Paradise at Cox’s Bazar enjoys a booming season

http://triunegroup.net/images/monitor/jan1-08/images/Paradise-2.jpg

Prasad Paradise Hotel and Resorts, located at Laboni Point on the Hotel Motel Road along the Bay of Bengal beach, is enjoying a booming period this peak tourist season following the takeover of its management by Grand Bay. Syed Enamul Karim, Chairman, Grand Bay Hotel and Resort Management Ltd., said, "It's a fine property having a seven-storied building with 84 rooms and 10 cottages. Dr. Abu Yousul Md. Abdullah, Chairperson of Prasad Pa-radise Hotel and Resorts felt that the hotel was not getting the desired projection among the tourists and decided to outsource the management. We took over the management of this property in July 2007 for six years."

The occupancy is now 100 per cent. During the lean season, the occupancy was earlier 25 per cent to 35 per cent, but it is much more improved now, said Syed Enamul Karim.

National and private airlines have increased flights to Cox's Bazar this year. So we are receiving more guests even in the lean season this year because of different promotions. During the holidays number of guests are even more, he added.

All the Deluxe, Super Deluxe rooms and suites of Prasad Paradise face the sea while the balconies of the rooms offer a view of the hills. The 10 double-storied cottages with beautiful names like Chaiti, Haimanti, Poushi, Barsha, Falguni, Baisakhi, Srabani, Jaisthi, Sarathi and Basanti have four bedrooms each and family space. Guests can stay taking the whole cottage or one of its floors.

The Sea View Restaurant of the hotel offers Bangladeshi, Thai, Chinese, Indian and Continental dishes. Buffet Lunch/Dinner and Barbecue are specially arranged during the tourist season.

Prasad Blue Lagoon swimming pool is at the centre of the hotel while the hotel's own beach chairs are there in the beach in front of the property with hotel's own security arrangements. Golf Area and Jhinuk Market are quite near.

Syed Enamul Karim said, in Managing the property, he is being helped by Benazir Ahmed, Managing Director of Grand Bay, who is well known to the diners who frequently used to visit Emmanuelle's outlets in Dhaka. As their management of Prasad Paradise is proving to be successful, Grand Bay hopes to take over the management of Prasad Paradise property in St Martin's Island in 2008 as well.

The growth in the number of guests proves that we are taking the right steps in attracting them and in developing the property. We are getting not only individual guests, but also families as well as corporate houses. Our promotions are generating good response. We'll further strengthen our marketing with all-built-in packages not only in the country but also among non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) as they constitute a sizable section of our guests, said Benazir Ahmed.

Syed Enamul Karim said, "A quick (financial) return is not our aim. We want more local entrepreneurs to come in as we feel the time is ripe for the right kind of professionals to move into the hospitality sector not only in Cox's Bazar but also in different cities and at places of historical and tourists' interest."

Asked about present activities and future plans, the Grand Bay Chairman said, "We are arranging cultural events in the evening on the hotel premises so that hotel guests have something to do other than watching television in their rooms."

Besides Kids Playzone, "We are thinking of setting up a theme park in collaboration with a foreign company and of introducing events like beach volleyball competitions and other activities that are not being held in Cox's Bazar now."

Thanks for all the pics, Tmac. These are some pictures of Hotel Shaibal, which used to be the best hotel in Cox's Bazar. I have heard something to the effect that the decline of this property is related to the corrupt dealings of the owners of some of the newer private properties...which is a shame, because when Shaibal opened about twenty years ago, it was a really nice place to stay.

Experience tranquility at http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Tarikpix/sea_cro.jpgHotel Sea Crown

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v457/Dhaka/Dhaka1/Dhaka2/hotelseacoxsbazar.jpg

Imagine waking up to the glittering sea, relaxing in a hammock under the bristling trees and enjoying glamorous tropical nights in the hottest destination? Dreams are within reach at the Hotel Sea Crown, a unique treasure among Cox's Bazar hotels.

Ideally located at Kola Toai intersection, more tranquil side of Cox's Bazar (meaning the Cox's Bazar bypass). Go straight to the beach, turn left and you will see Hotel Sea Crown.

The convenient location of Beach Hotel makes it the ideal choice for holiday and business accommodation. This spectacular location offers a wide variety of activities for the adventurous, serenity for the peaceful and fun for the families. Spacious air-conditioned rooms offer panoramic views overlooking the sea and beachfront promenade. Hotel Sea Crown is a stylish sea front resort, boasting lush gardens, luxurious accommodations and friendly service.

It is a quiet place on most days. Except for the glorious storms. Then the wind howls, the building shakes, and the rain pounds down. It's warm and sunny and the sky is bright blue. Some days the wind makes you stay inside and read! The sea is always present. You move into the rhythm of the sea. Perhaps that's why time seems to slow way down, almost to a standstill.

Some guests say the hotel is such a romantic place to celebrate anniversaries, or honeymoon. But it is also a wonderful place to go with a friend, or your mom, or your daughter, or old college roommate. It is also a great place to go by yourself, and never for a minute feel awkward being alone. You may have all the privacy you want, yet be in "the good company of strangers", too. It's a good place for men to be alone, or women. Young or old. It's a great place to bring a group of people who have a project to work on or a problem to solve. It's even a good place to make friends or fall in love.

"Our aim is to deliver to our guests a sense of serenity, relaxation and sophistication in a modern package. To use our gift of hospitality to ensure Sea Crown is not only a location, but also a destination," says the hotel manager.

Room facilities

24 hour room service, minibar, TV, air-condition, hot and cold water.

Room Sea Front Deluxe:

What's the point of putting it up on youtube, only? As if everybody has internet in Bangladesh! If they can come up with a media presentation why not promote it through advertisement on television, print medium, etc.? I watched the same sort of thing from one of the ship builders. I think these folks are totally missing the point of marketing/promotion. Youtube isn't marketing! The ad firms in Bangladesh should know that!

So Tmac, when are you getting your Cox Bay timeshare?

According to the video link that Tmac provided, one ' Configure Group' has taken up this project. That video also mentioned that it should be completed by 2010 but from my personal experience I would add another 2 years to that. The video showed some work in progress, but it didn't look like work was progressing fast.

First-ever holiday home estate to be built
Sayeda Akter

Jamuna Resort is to develop the country's first-ever holiday home estate aiming to start construction on a site near the Jamuna River this August.

The concept of holiday homes comes at a time when the number of domestic tourists has grown sharply, with the number of tourist resorts increasing four-fold in the past five years.

“It will be like a second home, where one could go once or twice a year to spend holiday or vacation, but it would be a permanent resident for them,” said ANM Shahjahan, project manager of Jamuna Resort, a concern of Jamuna Property.

He said the advertisement of the holiday homes estate will be run by national dailies and TV channels by the end of this month. The construction of the estate will start by August, he added.

Jamuna Property has already invested an amount of Tk 300 crore for preparing and designing the plot structure and Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) approved the plan in April.

According to Shahjahan, Jamuna Resort will develop the estate on some 400 acres of land.

Under the plan, Jamuna is to lease 132 plots measuring one bigha each.

The estate has been designed in three rows by the bank of the Jamuna River. In the first row each plot will cost Tk 20 lakh, while in the second and third rows the plots will cost Tk 16 lakh and Tk 14 lakh each respectively.

“Since many Bangladeshis are now building homes in Malaysia, Singapore or even in Canada to spend vacation we believe this project will be popular if it offers attractive price and quiet surroundings,” Shahjahan sounded optimistic.

According to the estate design, each owner has to build a home on 8 katha and the rest of the land will be used for gardening.

Recently the country has witnessed a major development of resorts supported by the changing habits of the urban middle classes.

Currently there are around 20 resorts in the country and all of them are established with private initiative, among them at least 12 resorts are open to guests.

Jamuna Resort, established in 2005, has 110 rooms for accommodation and different kinds of sports arrangement along with conferencing facilities has an average occupancy of 80 percent.

M. Hasan, great to have you here. Please consider posting regularly, as an architect's viewpoint would add greater quality to the discussion here. Also please consider posting some pictures of your projects directly on this site and telling us something about them...the site linked to isn't the easiest to navigate. I echo Mirza's sentiments in wanting to know about the two highrises pictured on the site...please give us some details on them. Also, what's the status of Cox Bay? We saw renderings of that hotel some time back but haven't heard much since. Are you the architect?

Anyone have any information about this hotel? And, anyone know anything about the hotel chain "Crown Pacific" based in London?

PBL arranges loan for 5-star hotel

The Prime Bank Ltd has arranged a syndicated short-term loan of Tk 15 crore for the Configure Engineers and Construction Company for setting up the first five-star hotel in Cox’s Bazar. The 201-room hotel of the London-based hotel chain Crown Pacific is expected to open by July 2009. The total cost of the project is estimated at Tk 53.27 crore, of which 30 per cent will be covered by the syndicated loan and the rest will be borne by the company, banking sources said. Besides Prime Bank, the Mutual Trust Bank Ltd will be the agent and Pubali Bank Ltd the account bank for the loan transaction. A signing ceremony of agreements for the loan will be held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel today.

A Monitor Report

Chittagong : Chittagong- abounds in tourism attractions with its unique location on the bank river Karnaphuli, proximity to the Bay of Bengal, historical attractions, rich cultural heritage, natural landscape and others. Until the recent past, no adequate class accommodation was available to tourists at this port city. Investment in the sector was not up to the expectations. Now it's nice to see a Bangladeshi entrepreneur coming up with just such a property, The Peninsula Chitta-gong.
A new four-star luxury business hotel, set up at personal initiative, is not only recording 55 per cent occupancy on an average, but has already led to a noticeable change in the attitude of its patrons in Chittagong known for hospitality.
The Peninsula Chitta-gong, which has become the favourite of foreigners, hosting ambassadors, high commissioners, corporate houses and celebrities like cricket stars, receiving well earned appreciations from them as well as from local people, will be stepping into its fourth year of operation on February 17 after completing three successful years.
Mustafa Tahseen Ar-shad, Managing Director, Voyager Bangladesh Ltd., which operates the hotel said, "The Peninsula provides the highest landmark for Chittagong hotels combining Western sophistication, Chittagonian hospitality and personalised services in a scenic but convenient location near GEC Circle in the port city."
All the 122 guestrooms_ eight Suites, 16 Super Deluxe, 28 Executive Twin, and 70 Deluxe_ are elegantly furnished in classic style and natural teakwood floor providing latest guest conveniences and amenities including electronic key card entry to rooms, ergonomic furniture, IDD dialling, voice mail, high speed Internet access, individual climate control, bath robe, bathroom slippers, hair dryer.
The hotel's 4,000 square Dahlia banquet/conference room can accommodate 400 persons, the 5,000 square feet Club 21 rooftop retreat 300 persons, 500 square feet Seashell Business Boardroom can accommodate 45 key persons of a business organisation while Coral Room offers private dining for 30 persons.
Flamingo Cafe, a spacious and modern joint, is the hotel's all-day dining restaurant, also specialising in breakfast buffets. A Continental menu including authentic Italian dishes is also available for all-day dining.
The cuisines of four Asian countries_ Bang-ladesh, India (including Tandoor), Thailand and China_ are on offer at Laguna multi-cuisine signature restaurant of the hotel, providing the more 'formal' dining experience and is the favourite meeting place of Chittagong's business and social elite with its delicious menu, beverage service and soothing music. The Isles bar is perfect for quiet rendezvous.
The hotel boasts of rooftop heated swimming pool named 'Skypool,' Shakti fitness centre, sauna and steam bath. All areas in the building are covered with complete security system and auto fire extinguishers.
"Our guest mix is 90 per cent foreigners_ embassies, high commissions, well-known business houses of the country, multinationals, banks, NGOs and tourist groups from abroad. Most of the bookings are directly to us," Arshad said.
"Our hotel has been the venue of different exhibitions, conferences and meetings. British Council is a big client. Their seminars and examinations are held here. The young cadets of a foreign navy, receiving training in Bangladesh, spend their weekends at the hotel."
"Local guests have also started to appreciate what we offer as we have also attuned ourselves to them," he added.
Regarding revenue, Arshad said, "Our rates are competitive. Seventy per cent of our revenue is from rooms and 30 per cent from F&B."
The hotel offers special rates for tourist groups. Two groups are scheduled to avail its packages in the first fortnight of next month, he said.
To celebrate its third anniversary, a month-long International and Local Food Festival is being held at Flamingo Cafe on Level-3. From February 1 to 9 Thai and Chinese Food Festival was held, Indian and Bangladeshi Food Festival started on February 10 and will continue up to February 18 and Continental and Korean Food Festival will be held from February 17 to 28. Raffle Draw and gift for children are the special attractions of the Festival. Special discount is also available at the hotel's Laguna restaurant on Level-5 and Banquet menu starting Tk. 450 per person and above during this period.
People of Chittagong hope that more entrepreneurs of the port city and elsewhere will invest in tourism and other related facilities to take the sector another step further.

FE Report

Centara Hotel and Resort, a Thailand-based hotel and resort chain, plans to operate its business in Bangladesh mainly in hospitality industry and retail chain by investing Tk 30 billion, its Vice President John Marc Garet told reporters.

He along with other high officials was speaking at a city hotel with local journalists on its business plan Tuesday.

"We want to tap the growing Bangladesh market especially in the field of hotel and retail business chain," said John Marc Garet.

The company wants to start its business in Bangladesh within this year and it has plan to invest the estimated amount within the next few years.

Centara Hotels and Resort was established in 1980 with the objective of developing hotels. Its turnover in 2007 was US$ 224.43 million.

Apart from operating a chain of leading city hotels in Bangkok as well as premier resorts in key tourist locations in Thailand, it also operates five major quick service restaurants.

Mr John, however, said his company now intends to take the charge of Dhaka Sheraton Hotel as its present contract will expire on March 31.

Centara Hotel and Resort participated in a bid to operate the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel and it claimed that only the company had experience in running five-star hotels in the world out of six participants.

Mr John said there is ample opportunity in Bangladesh's tourism sector as foreign tourists are increasingly getting attracted to seeing the natural beauty in Bangladesh.

He also said his company has plan to invest in the hotel business in Dhaka, Cox's Bazar and Kuakata.

Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Embassy in Dhaka Tuesday announced that all Bangladeshi and foreign nationals who apply for tourists and medical visas from Dhaka will be exempted from visa fees between March 5 and June 4, 2009 to promote tourism.

This was disclosed by Thai Ambassador in Bangladesh Chalermpol Thanchitt at a press conference organised by Centara Hotel and Resort of Thailand for promoting tourism to that country.

The Thai ambassador also said the arrangement will not be applicable to other types of visa applicants and nor to the service charge collected by VFS, the Thai Visa application processing centre.

Information on Thailand's visa is available on the ministry of Foreign Affairs website (www.mfa.go.th

Well there is a small suspended glass and metal thing at the entrance and they could just make that bigger.

I think Porticos can take on a different form by themselves and sort of become the architectural highlight -- they are the entrance after all.

First 5-star hotel in Ctg soon
Staff Correspondent, Ctg

Bangladesh Sena Kalyan Sangstha commenced the construction of a venture, Water Garden Hotel Chittagong, in the port city on Monday.

Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed, also chairman of Army Hotel Development Limited, inaugurated the ceremony by unveiling the foundation stone of the hotel.

The five star hotel, the first of its kind in Chittagong, would be similar to the Hotel Radisson Water Garden in Dhaka. I will be built on over 4.18 acres of land between Zia Memorial Museum and Chittagong Club, sources said.

The Army chief hoped that the hotel would be an attraction for tourists, including those visiting Cox's Bazar and the three CHT districts, and entrepreneurs from both home and abroad.

This is nice that you have been all these places. Nice photos too.

But can you tell me how to go and how to make contact with resorts or hotels in different places.

I think - to make the site more lucrative you should give contact details of hotel & resorts. So that all the members can also go to the places where you all been.

Thanks & regards.

You could be right Dope...

However the number of boutique hotels in Dhaka are (still) a lot lower than BKK or Delhi when compared to numbers of business visitors. So Dhaka's smaller hoteliers can probably charge a lot more than $120 per Diem and often do. Business travelers often pay more than $120 for this type of hotel IMHO. The fact that these guys are charging less is a good trend...Or would you say no?

I'm quite impressed by the spare, functional and modern interior decor and would expect to pay upwards of $200.

cant compare dhaka with bkk or delhi!

many of the foreigners also want good prostitutes or high class escorts, so if they can provide this additional service they can get a lot of customers :P

my uncle has a lot of foreign visitors, he bought this building in baridhara dohs (which allso serves as an office) to accommodate them and one bungalow in savar, and trust me it saves him a lot of money and his guests love it! most of the time

i think many people will be doing this now saves them the hotel shit!
