bonoslack7 August 25th, 2009, 08:12 AM Cinepolis, the world’s fifth largest movie theatre circuit, is making its foray into India by providing megaplex formats and world-class cinema experience to Indian audiences. Speaking to this correspondent about the company’s plans in India, Milan Saini, Country Head, Cinepolis India, said that Cinepolis would target Chennai and Tier-II and Tier-III cities in Tamil Nadu and offer large megaplex facilities that would feature double digit screens per site at most of its locations, particularly big malls.
Tamil Nadu is a place for people with a craze for watching movies most of the time and this factor has made Cinepolis work out its plan of launching screens in malls in down south, mostly in metropolitan Chennai, he said.
“Cinepolis has already made a blueprint to operate 500 screens in India with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore and the result is the signing of deals with 12 developers in eight cities for setting up 110 screens in the first phase,” he said. “There are also plans to enter into deals with realty developers for creating 200 more screens across India by 2010, he added.
However, his company’s first multiplex would become operational in Amritsar with a minimum of four screens by October this year, Milan Saini remarked.
The $675 million Mexico-based Cinepolis has over 2,000 screens across six Latin American countries and there is a clear case to launch Cinepolis and Cinepolis VIP brands in India with the advanced digital technology format for giving the people of the country a better cinema viewing experience on the lines of western countries.
kpgopal August 25th, 2009, 09:41 AM 3 years frankly sounds very optimistic to me.. Not because it is difficult to construct the road itself in that time, but because of all the other issues that will keep cropping up..
Look at the countless projects that get stuck midway.. Almost no major project simply goes through without a hitch, and mark my words, this will be no different..
I agree that 3 years looks very optimistic.
For a comparision, the 3 kms. stretch of the elevated corridor in Ambattur Industrial estate (Chennai bypass) is in progress for over 3 years now. It is still not complete despite the following:
1) Hardly any issues of acquisition etc
2) The structure is completely over land
3) A reputed contractor like HCC.
So let's keep our fingers crossed on the timely completion of the Maduravoyal port project.
sridhar_n August 25th, 2009, 10:29 AM ^^Yes, the experience with other projects have been dismal. But, the question is will the authorities commit the same goof ups again? I hope they learn from their mistakes.
To me, if the activities are planned well, it can be completed much earlier than the planned 36 months.

The size of Chennai city is set to expand manifold. Whether it will enlarge from its present extent of 176 sq.km. to become a mega city of 800 sq.km area or it will be a relatively smaller expansion to encompass about 420 sq.km area is a decision that the government of Tamil Nadu will soon take.
The committee, constituted to examine the proposal for delineating new city Corporations around Chennai city, has recommended two options to the State government and submitted the report on August 18.
The first option recommends a greater Chennai Corporation that will administer an area of 800 sq.km and is based on the study of other large city corporations such as Hyderabad and Bangalore which are spread over an area of about 650 and 700 sq.km respectively. This expanded Corporation will incorporate various municipalities and other local bodies within the Chennai Metropolitan Area (1189 sq.km).
The second option is to expand the present city to a size of 420 sq.km and in addition, create two Corporations with Avadi and Tambaram as headquarters.
In this proposal, the existing municipalities such as Ambattur and Alandur would be merged with the Chennai Corporation and Semancheri would be the southern limit and Thiruvottiyur and Kathivakkam the northern limit of the city. The Chennai-Avadi Corporation would cover about 150 sq.km extending up to Poonamallee.
The Chennai-Tambaram Corporation would cover about 200 sq.km extending up to Vandalur.
Both these options were not amongst the alternatives that were discussed at public consultation meetings held in 2008 and 2009, but have been arrived at as a result of the discussions, say a government source.
Goal
The purpose behind this restructuring, as stated by the government, is to create ‘higher order local bodies’ that will deliver better public services, generate more resources and facilitate private public partnerships to undertake new infrastructure projects.
The government also expects that this restructuring will optimise expenditure and improve administration.

Work on desilting and deepening the Old Tambaram Tank of the Bhimeswar temple on Mudichur Main Road began on Thursday. The work was
supervised by Tambaram MLA S R Raja who contributed Rs 5 lakh from his local constituency fund and the municipality supplied the remaining Rs 1.6 lakh. The tank had been renovated last year but again fell into disuse.
Municipal workers began removing the sludge from all the corners. Municipal officials said toilets and water taps would be built and adequate illumination provided. The damaged walker's path around the tank would be repaired and Korean grass planted along the pathway. A play area with equipment for children would also be set up in the open space available. "The dredging and deepening work will be completed within a fortnight while the entire work will be finished in two months," Tambaram municipality chairman E Mani told TOI.
"It is hearting to see the centuries-old-tank being given a facelift again, suprevised by MLA Raja himself. Repeated representations to the local body have borne fruit," said S Shanmugam, a resident of West Tambaram.
Located a few yards away from the residence of Raja, "Pazhaya Tambaram Kulam" as it is popularly known, was displayed as a "model" of people-government cooperation when it was renovated in February 2008 after over four decades of neglect at a cost of Rs 26 lakh. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Agency (CMDA) contributed Rs 8 lakh under its community-based environment development programme, the Tambaram municipality spent Rs 4 lakh, an amount of Rs 10 lakh came from MP T R Baalu's local area development fund, S R Raja gave Rs 5 lakh and the residents of West Tambaram pooled in Rs 1 lakh.
Within a few months, however, the tank returned to its former decreipt state. Thick vegetation covered all the sides and people began dumping garbage there. Most of the lights around the tank were broken, the walker's path got damaged and the water level went down. The rainwater harvesting system was also not put to use effectively.
The tank, said to be the oldest in the area, was very popular with the residents of West Tambaram.

The beautification of the Marina Beach is progressing apace with at least 90% of the works complete and the entire project is expected
to be over in about two months, Mayor M Subramanian said on Monday. After inspecting work at the site, he said some works, including construction of galleries and non-slippery granite footpaths, would be finished in a month.
The Rs 20.75-crore project is part of the local body's ambitious programme to beautify the city. Work on a 3.1 km stretch between Anna Square and Light House began in Februay 2008. "We expect to complete the entire project in another two months," Subramanian told TOI.
Twelve of the 14 galleries have been built while the laying of the four metre-wide non-slippery granite footpaths and 15 metre-wide lawns is nearing completion. "Once the construction is over, people will not be allowed to take bath on the sands. We will look into the modalities of fixing a fee structure for the use of urinals and bathrooms," the mayor said.
The architect's blueprint of the project had included ornamental fountains, exclusive parking lots for four-wheelers and two-wheelers, a children's play area, bus shelters, ramps for physically-challenged and food courts. The corporation, which prohibited the sale and use of plastic on the Marina from August 15, has planned an awarness programme on August 26.
The corporation has already replaced the decade-old 250-watt lamps with 690 anti-corrosive lamps along Kamaraj Salai and along the service road as part of the project.
Several walkers, including film producer AVM Saravanan, told the Mayor about the damaged kerbs, faulty aligned footpaths and water stagnation in the walking area and sought more seaters along the footpaths.

In a bid to ease traffic congestion on Mount Poonamallee Road, the State Highways Department has proposed to widen it from four lanes to six lanes from the stretch near Ramavaram in a phased manner.
Officials of State Highways said that the tendering process for the project to widen the road for a distance of 3 km from Ramavaram to Porur, at a cost of Rs.5.7 crore, has been initiated. The daily traffic on the road is estimated to be about 40,000 passenger cars. The road-widening work would commence in about two months and completed by March or April next year.
Of the total 10.8 km long road, there is a proposal to take up widening of the stretch between Porur and Kumananchavadi under Chennai Metropolitan Development Project. The stretch between Kathipara junction and Manapakkam has already been improved to six lane carriageway in February at a cost of Rs.4.2 crore, the officials said.
Also, the department is carrying out a study to strengthen the Poonamallee Avadi Road. At present, heavy vehicles are not allowed to take the road leading to Maduravoyal. Instead they are being diverted to Avadi from Poonamallee. The study would check feasibility of increasing the bitumen level and widening of the road. Ambattur Puzhal Road, which is also used by heavy vehicles bound for Andhra Pradesh, would be improved next year.
The department has also taken up improvement works of five bridges in Tiruvallur district. Besides repairing damaged portion of the bridges, works are on to clean the vents for free flow of rainwater during monsoon.
Besides two bridges over Adyar River in Ramavaram, those in the stretch of Poonamallee Avadi Road near Paruthipattu, Pattabiram and Amudurmedu constructed over Cooum River would be repaired by mid-September, the

The Paris-based Fives group, a €1.5-billion provider of process equipment, turnkey solutions and project management for a wide range of industrial sectors, has floated an Indian subsidiary.
Fives India Engineering & Project Pvt Ltd has been set up in Chennai to cater to the cement, auto components, aluminium, nuclear, stainless steel and steel plant sectors.
It has kicked off its operations with projects in the aluminium industry in which it has, along with consortium partners, bagged orders for over Rs 781 crore for the supply of smelters and related equipment, says Mr S. K. Dan, Managing Director, India Operations, Fives India Engineering.
Fives India will also provide global engineering services to its group companies worldwide, he said.
On the choice of Chennai as a location for Fives India, Mr Dan said the company looked at proximity to its customers, air link to its headquarters in Europe, availability and cost of skilled human resource and cost of space.
Chennai scored optimally on all these fronts. For example, when a company is looking to recruit over a 100 engineers, space cost becomes important. In Chennai, the cost is just about a fifth of that of Delhi or Mumbai. Availability of skilled personnel is more in Chennai for Fives' area of operations. Though Kolkata was comparable in this regard, the industrial climate and connectivity to Europe was better from Chennai.

French transportation major Alstom is planning to set up a metro rail coach factory near Chennai.
Sources in the Government of Andhra Pradesh confirmed to Business Line that Alstom is looking to put up the facility at the upcoming industrial township, Sri City, some 40 km north of Chennai, within the borders of Andhra Pradesh.
Investment details have been kept under wraps. Sources said that the details would be revealed when the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would formally make an announcement on this while on a visit to the Sri City SEZ on September 9. Alstom did not respond to a request for a comment.
Sources point out that there is a growing business for Metro rail coaches, as many cities – Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, are some examples — propose to have metro rail for intra-city public transportation.
When Alstom works its plans, it will be the second major foreign investment in the metro rail coach building area, after Bombardier, whose €33 million plant has become operational.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that a German company is investing in a railway wheel plant in the Sri City SEZ. Again, officials are tight-lipped about the name of the company or the investments. BFG International Pvt Ltd of Bahrain, which makes fibre reinforced polyester and composite mouldings, is currently building a facility in the SEZ to make inner linings for coaches.

The property market continues to be subdued. But this has not prevented realty developers from launching new projects. Chennai-based Akshaya Homes, which has been developing properties for about 14 years, has announced three new projects, including two residential apartment projects, around Chennai.
While one residential project, ‘Adena’ is coming up near Siruseri IT Park, just off OMR; ‘Belvedere’ is coming up at Urapakkam on the GST Road. A third project, ‘Domaine’, a commercial property, will come up on OMR.
“From incorporating elder-friendly features in Adena to creating a super luxury residential block in Belvedere keeping the youth in mind, we anticipate and understand the customers’ needs and believe in delivering a superior quality living space to our esteemed clientele,” says T Chitty Babu, chairman & chief executive officer, Akshaya Homes.
Adena will offer 199 residential units, comprising 2BHKs, starting from 631 sq ft to 1,060 sq ft. “Customers will have a choice of 38 different sizes to choose from. These are elderly and kids friendly homes. The residential units are priced between Rs 17 lakh and
Rs 30 lakh at an inaugural price
of Rs 2,500 per sq ft,” says
Chitty Babu.
The facilities include landscaped garden, reading room and a convenio store, besides ramps, grab bars and anti-skid flooring for the elderly. “Located just behind our earlier completed projects – Adair and Adora, Adena will be completed in 18 months and we will ensure on-time delivery as is the case with all our projects,” he said.
On the other hand, ‘Belvedere’ will have three towers with a total constructed space of 4.69 lakh sq ft. While one tower will offer 156 3BHK apartments, the other tower will offer 104 2BHK residential units. The third tower will have 77 serviced apartments.
“We are developing ‘Belvedere’ specifically for the youth and it will have features that gel well with the youngsters,” Chitty Babu says. Common facilities will include gymnasium, swimming pool, multi-purpose court, indoor recreation room, billiards, table tennis, multipurpose hall, 100-seat AV theatre, sauna, steam, spa, business centre, food court, amusement centre and a banquet hall.
“We are promoting it as the obvious place for ultra-modern living for the youth. And the USP will be the fact that there are no common walls and its basic concept will be that of an ‘island house’,” Chitty Babu pointed out.
It is being offered at an inaugural price of Rs 3,150 per sq ft. While the 2BHKs will come with a starting size of 1,012 sq ft and with a starting price of Rs 37 lakh, the 3BHKs will start at 1,450 sq ft in terms of size and at a price of Rs 54 lakh. This project will be completed in 24 months.
In addition, Akshaya is promoting a commercial project, ‘Domaine’, which will have a built-up area of 33,500 sq ft. With a restaurant, cafeteria, conference hall, power back-up and ample car parking space, it is being developed as a business centre for business executives frequenting OMR, Chennai’s IT Corridor.

The restaurant is chilly, but the kitchen is warm and toasty. What looks like artery-clogging amounts of oil is bubbling away in deep-fat fryers. Chunks of chicken are being breaded, fried and then rested on heated counters, small labels indicating t he time until when it is good to be served. There is some staff member or the other, hair tucked away in blue safety cap, scrubbing their hands at a wash basin in the corner. Charts stuck on the wall attempt to predict the demand and estimate the amount of business the day will bring in. For KFC, it’s one more dry run for the day on which its 50th outlet in India, in Chennai’s Anna Nagar, formally opens to the neighbourhood.
The previous day, the restaurant was opened for two hours and did a business of Rs 1 lakh, which is the average takings per outlet per day, says Niren Chaudhary, Managing Director, Yum! Restaurants India. “It’s an incredible time to expand,” he says in reply to a question about the slowdown. The topline has grown 20 per cent over the last year and the number of consumers has grown 10 per cent. Pizza Hut, also part of the Yum! portfolio, is growing, but at a slower pace as it’s much bigger than KFC in spread, with 150 outlets across the country and price points that are “two times that of KFC”. It has grown 6-7 per cent over the previous year and is adding about 15 outlets a year.
AFFORDABLE TREATS
The reason for these restaurants thriving, he explains, is the emphasis these concepts place on affordability. KFC is a quick-service restaurant model which aims to be affordable with prices starting at Rs 25 for a sandwich, and Pizza Hut is positioned as “affordable casual dining”, and that makes them “recession-proof”. Further, rentals are seeing a correction, and the group is gung-ho about KFC’s prospects.
Customers, especially the young ones between 19 and 29 that are KFC’s core, are looking for “something new, something different”, says Chaudhary. This trend is one of the dominant drivers of consumption and also the factor driving Yum! to test-market its other big brand, Taco Bell, in Bangalore, where the first outlet will open in November or December. And it’s not as if all this food needs to have an “Indian bent” either. “What’s more important is to be differentiated – the newness of the idea is far more important that the familiarity of the idea,” he adds.
That apart, price and value for money are constants that need the most careful consideration. Our consumers are SEC A & B in big metros and are subset of our market in the entire country. If the country’s one billion, our market is 100 million, so focus is key. Focus on the metros and there is a big likelihood of getting to your target consumers, he says.
Given that KFC’s target customers are youth, the emphasis on affordability is very high, says Chaudhary. Moreover, as it’s a quick service restaurant model, it needs massive throughput at low average spends to be competitive. There’s a selection of sandwiches for Rs 25, a snack box meal for less than Rs 50 and lunch may cost Rs 100-150 per head – and the money-value equation doesn’t end there. There is the price point value, and then the ‘value in totality’ (what one gets for the amount paid) and the third is ‘abundance value’ (the total amount of food that one gets ordering as a group). Further, marrying affordability to innovation, which ties in with the ‘something new, something different’ insight, is key.
Chaudhary says a restaurant has multiple jobs to do – it is not just a place to get a meal, it is also a venue for people to catch up and connect, pretty much ‘the other place’. Therefore, an air-conditioned, smart and affordable place is bound to do well. He points to the explosion of coffee places in the country, saying they multiplied rapidly because they recognised this truth.
Vishwadeep Kuila, CEO of the Chennai-based Oriental Cuisines which runs a host of fine dining restaurants and the Planet Yumm chain of food malls, says the organised food market in India is barely 2 per cent of the total food sales, compared to 12-15 per cent worldwide or 20-25 per cent in developed countries. As such, there is enormous potential available in India “as long as market players understand what India likes”. He says: “Let’s face it, India is starved of such outlets, neat places where people can eat well and catch up. And while people may cry about junk food, be wary about it, we will still grant it to our children.” However, the ambience is always secondary to quality and service, he says. Fast food brands such as KFC and McDonald’s are the top grossers next only to homegrown brands such as Saravana Bhavan at Chennai’s Ascendas Planet Yumm food mall, which Oriental Cuisines runs, he says.
Expansion plans
Yum! plans having 100 KFC outlets in place by end-2010 at an investment of Rs 150 crore. The bigger goal is to have 300 outlets in place by 2011 and 500 outlets operating by 2015. For now, the focus will be on expanding its presence within the big metros that it’s present in now. “In the long run, a city like Chennai could have 20-25 outlets, while Mumbai and Delhi could have twice as many,” says Chaudhary.
Even as it is on a rapid expansion drive, Yum! is also battling charges of forex violations. The charge is that it failed to invest $80 million over seven years under which it received the licence to operate. While the company confirms receiving a show-cause notice from the Enforcement Directorate, Chaudhary says Yum! is a responsible MNC and has been operating in the country for more than a decade and he’s confident of its stand.
Competition from the likes of McDonald’s or more local chains serving similar food does not bother Yum! “The organised branded food sector is in a stage of complete infancy,” says Chaudhary. “The runway and opportunity are absolutely mammoth – it’s not a situation where one brand takes away from the other. None of us are at a scale that’s large enough for that to happen,” he adds. The sector is growing dramatically, and those that will do well are brands that concentrate on great innovation, higher level of food safety and sanitation, consistency and affordability, he says.
KFC has often been in the news for animal rights activists protests who allege the chickens they source haven’t been raised in humane conditions but Chaudhary doesn’t have much to say about it other than to state that they source the chicken only from poultries that “comply with the laws of the land” such as Venkateswara Hatcheries and Godrej Tyson.
Oriental’s Kuila says it is a long way off before people make a big hue and cry about junk food. And a lot of these multinational brands are focusing on developing countries because they know there won’t be protests similar to the West. As long as they are mindful of quality and hygiene, they will do well, he adds. “The model is very replicable and it can be a large chain with consistent quality, almost like a factory,” he remarks.
A major concern with fast food, that of health, is sought to be addressed when Chaudhary says that there is less than one per cent of transfatty acids in KFC’s cooking medium. And in the next few years, the brand will also look at non-fried options. “There’s a proactive approach to this across all our stores,” he says.
Will the ‘chicken’ branding work in a country with a large vegetarian population? The goal is for KFC to be a “mainstream powerhouse brand” and that means much adjustment and innovation – the fryers are separate, the oil used is separate, and there are many vegetarian options on the menu, says Chaudhury, though he adds that growth in the non-vegetarian section is “dramatic”. “As KFC’s pretty new as a concept, it can stand for anything and the consumer can give us credit for it. We don’t want to exclude anyone so we have a vegetarian range we don’t normally have outside India,” he says. In fact, Taco Bell’s Mexican-inspired food is easily adapted to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions and has Yum! upbeat about its prospects.
Yum! has two other brands, a hamburger brand called A & W, and a seafood brand called Long John Silver’s, but has no plans to bring them to India. “We don’t see the potential in them to be national concepts,” says Chaudhary. “Has Yum! as a chain broken even? “I’d say we’re largely trending in that direction, we continue to be more in investment mode – if our ambition is to be more than 300 by 2010, there’s a lot of investment that should be done ahead of that curve.” says Chaudhary.
Globally 85 per cent of Yum!’s restaurants are franchised, and that’s what the group is working towards in India too; only 15 pc are company-owned.
“We want to bring in high-calibre franchise partners in the years to come. The customer doesn’t care who’s running this restaurant, the brand must be faceless. The investment is the franchisee’s, we support them with know-how, logistics, supply chain, but most of all, how to run an organisation,” says Chaudhary.
Pizza Hut is fully franchised but KFC is a mixed model, with Yum! owning some restaurants. In the short term the company will ramp up investment much faster but that will even out with time as it finds the right franchise partners, he adds.

LOL!! You can't expect all investments to be in Chennai! Tada is strategic place to Chennai. So it deserved some good investments. Way to go Sri city!
After all AP is following wat TN did in Hosur and nothing wrong in it.
Mad 4 Madras August 27th, 2009, 12:35 PM Now it may not be for you.. But it will really start paining if we loose Peugeot to Sri City.
ferrari_fan August 27th, 2009, 01:25 PM ^^ Oh grow up.. How on earth will it "start paining" if Peugeot doesn't come to Chennai?
1) A car factory in Tada will have the exact same effect on the city as a car factory 60 kms away in any other direction, such as Sriperumbudur or Oragadam..
2) Even if the factory does go to another state, it's going to have absolutely no bearing on your life unless you have some kind of job offer waiting for you at Peugeot already..
Relax and enjoy life..
:)
bonoslack7 August 27th, 2009, 02:23 PM Its awesome that AP is bringing up a Hosur near Chennai and in the long term it will also increase the economic prosperity of TN too. We just cant go on building factories from Chennai till Trichy!

Developing Sri City will help improve North Chennai. The manufacturing industries coming up in that region (both within and outside TN limits) like Toshiba, Alsthom etc will trigger economic prosperity. The middle level and officer level people will prefer to stay within Chennai limits for better infrastructure. Overall, it is a win-win situation for both the states.
Kewl Batty August 27th, 2009, 04:46 PM ^^ Yes, and it also will trigger the extension of auto corridor which stretches from maraimalainagar till gummidipoondi to Sulurpet.
arunmani August 27th, 2009, 04:50 PM All TN has to do is to take up development all the way close to the border, that way both state can share in the prosperity. There are many examples of twin cities in the US Kansas City MO, KS. Omaha NE/Council Bluffs IA etc.
I am not sure why TN is not prompting Hosur aggresively. If we do I hope it does not start another fight between Karnataka and TN.

die4chennai August 27th, 2009, 05:27 PM There are still lots of vacant plots in the gummidipoondi area(and in NH5); they need to step up the Infra and offer land at reduced prices to compete with Sricity. Kewl Batty August 27th, 2009, 07:45 PM Financial city project in Chennai taking shape (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/Economy/Infrastructure/Financial-city-project-in-Chennai-taking-shape/articleshow/4941816.cms)
27 Aug 2009, 2022 hrs IST, Hemamalini Venkatraman & Niranjana Ramesh, ET Bureau
CHENNAI: The financial city in Chennai, considered a dream project of Tamil Nadu deputy CM M K Stalin is taking shape within a month of his
formally announcing during the Assembly session in July.
Mr Stalin had announced the financial city would come up near Chennai with private sector participation. It will be set up to attract banks, insurance companies, mutual funds
and stock brokers to the State. The Government will build basic infrastructure for the city.
Now, the principal promotional agency, TIDCO, which promoted major projects like Tidel IT park, and Ticel bio park, has swung into an action mode to give push to the project implementation. The corporation has started holding discussions with various stakeholders (BFSI companies and executives, consultants, developers) to come out with a blue print on financial city. A special purpose vehicle would be floated for the purpose.
It is gleaned from sources that 300-acres have been identified on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) as an ideal location for the proposed project. Global management Consultancy firm McKinsey has been appointed as the consultant for preparing the detailed project report (DPR).
Twin locations — Sholinganallur and Pallavaram — on the bustling OMR IT corridor are being evaluated to set up the finance
city. Two factors, availability of land and connectivity, are the reasons to choose these areas, sources told ET.
A government official too confirmed that the land (already at the disposal of government) has been chosen on account of proximity, connectivity to the city and social infrastructure. "We will have to use whatever existing infrastructure is available," he said.
Meanwhile, Tidco is in the process of preparing the concept note. "Financial cities have evolved in the past, not created. It is not possible to increase the number of core financial transactions in Chennai unless the business volumes go up here," an official involved closely with the project said.
"The concept itself is so new that we have to first agree on the aims and objectives of the project," he said.
According to him, the financial city would serve to attract more technology work into the state. "The skill-sets available here are clearly suited for application processes or financial services technology. Probably 20-30% of the IT work done here would fit into our financial city."
The concept note is expected to be ready in 30-40 days, following which a tender would be floated for engaging a consultant to prepare the DPR.
"That will take 4-6 weeks. It is possible to complete the DPR within six months, and the consultant will do so, in all likelihood," the official said.
Another official commented that it was an "unprecedented" deadline. The government is studying financial city models of Shanghai, Dubai and Gujarat, and it is in this connection that Tidco has been talking to consultants like KPMG and PWC. "We have also been co-ordinating with CII, which is, in turn, working with associates or individuals in KPMG," he said.
CII-TN chairman C K Ranganathan said, "The state is already blessed with three levers like automotive, IT and healthcare. We expect the financial city venture to be one more lever for driving the growth. But, like in other sectors, it should be able to attract some big names in the world".
He said CII is ready with its own blue print on the project, prepared by McKinsey. Based on the report, CII will make its own recommendations to Government. According to a KPMG official, as there is no cookie-cut approach to the project, all efforts are directed towards giving shape to the concept. Whether it would be a self-contained one or have financial services-related infrastructure, bunched in a single location, are still aspects that need evaluation.
Kewl Batty August 27th, 2009, 07:59 PM ^^ Nice to hear that a SPV will be floated for the project!

CHENNAI: Frontier Mediville, the proposed eco-friendly modern medical village in Tiruvallur district, is scheduled for inauguration on October
20, 2010.
The Rs 1,500-crore facility, promoted by Dr K M Cherian on a 360-acre campus in Elavur village, will have a national medical science park for research, training and treatment with a focus on regenerative medicine. This will supplement the proposed 1,000-bed multi-specialty bio-hospital.
The national medical science park will have an animal farm, a research block and a training centre offering postgraduate programmes in courses such as stem cell research, tissue engineering and nanotechnology. The other features include a Russian amphibian plane and helipad for emergencies, an elders' enclave and a golf course. "The place will have 100 Ph D scholars and provide employment to 3,000 people," Dr Cherian said.
He was speaking after signing an MoU with BSNL to provide telecom solutions at a cost of Rs 50 crore. BSNL Chennai Telephones chief general manager M P Velusamy said: "We will be using the latest technology such as Wi-Max and radio relay equipment to allow those in Mediville to get data on the go. It will be done using optic fibre cables so that the communication networks
do not produce electro-magnetic radiation so the system will be environment friendly."
The launch of Frontier Mediville will coincide with the inauguration of the 20th World Congress of the World Society of Cardio Thoracic Surgeons to be hosted by Frontier Lifeline and Dr K M Cherian Heart Foundation in the country.

TN gvt is worst in marketing the tier II cities. When Bombardier went to Vododara for setting up India's first metro manufacturing factories they did not find the land in Mumbai or Ahmedabad, they rightly placed it in Baroda which is a good location on Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor and they get stainless steel (which is the main component for manufacturing the coaches) much nearer from Surat's steel plants.
In South, Mysore and Salem have steel plants apart from Vizag which is little far east. If TN gvt could have done good marketing they could have placed a metro coach manufacturer either in Bangalore-Salem corridor or Salem-Chennai corridor which will provide very good resource for the companies right from raw material to talent pools.
When Gujarat and Maha's can do marketing for their tier II cities, TN gvt has failed much in marketing the tier II cities and it will continue for ever whichever government comes to rule. Its the fate of tier II cities in TN.

Nissan to shift production of small car from UK to India
Pankaj Doval, TNN 28 August 2009
NEW DELHI: Forget China, it’s focus India for global automakers, courtesy small cars. In a move that reflects the growing stature of the Indian
car industry globally, Japanese major Nissan has decided to shift the entire production of its small car, Micra, from the UK to India. After production of the Micra begins here, Nissan plans to manufacture four more models in India, involving a total investment of over Rs 2,000 crore.
The move underlines the rush among automakers to rationalize production costs and move to locations that offer the best value and quality. “We have decided to manufacture the Micra at our upcoming factory at Oragadam, near Chennai,” Nissan India MD and CEO Kiminobu Tokuyama told TOI.
The company’s Chennai plant will start production from May next year, and export markets would be catered to from autumn, Tokuyama said. Nissan, he said, plans to meet Micra’s requirements for the entire European region as well as some other markets like West Asia from the Chennai plant. “We plan to start with export volumes of 1.1 lakh units, which would be gradually scaled up to 1.8 lakh units as demand goes up,” Tokuyama said.
But what prompted the step? “There are many benefits in India, including a high-quality vendor base that is also cost-effective, leading to globally-competitive pricing,” Tokuyama said. Nissan will thus emulate companies like Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki, which make small cars in India to export to Europe.

think_different August 30th, 2009, 01:54 AM The ChPT has chalked out a plan to develop a barge jetty adjoining the new pipeline trestle at the north-west side of the Bharathi Dock on PPP basis.
It has invited EoIs from private players on how the facility should be developed.
There is an existing facility at the dock in the Chennai port to handle barges up to 65 mtrs long with three mtrs depth. However, ChPT plans to construct a barge jetty up to a maximum of 200 mtrs length without affecting the maneuverability of container, oil and iron ships handled at the dock.
ChPT is expected to provide private operators the right-of-way in the existing pipeline trestle without affecting the present operations; permission to develop an elevated approach from the breakwater to the barge jetty; land area of 7,500 sq mtrs in the vicinity of the jetty and existing barge handling facility.
catick August 30th, 2009, 04:50 AM Ashok Leyland-Nissan to roll out its first LCV by mid-2010
According to latest information, Ashok Leyland Limited (ALL) would be rolling out its first LCV along with Nissan sometime in the middle of next year. Though the Indian commercial vehiclemaker refused to divulge any details, well-informed sources have revealed that Ashok Leyland-Nissan JV will roll out the first product in two versions - one being a 1.25-tonne diesel truck and the other being a two-tonne truck.
When quizzed about the delay in introducing its products, a senior representative has said this has been primarily due to the delay in the allotment of land for a Chennai facility by the government of Tamil Nadu. It is to be mentioned that initially all the products will be launched from Ashok Leyland’s existing plant in Chennai.
R. Seshasayee, managing director, Ashok Leyland, told reporters, "The Nissan programme is to be implemented in two phases. Phase-one will be done in our existing facility (in Chennai or Hosur) with arranged products and Ashok Leyland products. The second phase would be on a greenfield site and the new venture will have separate branding. Our initial capacity is 50,000-plus per annum on a two-shift basis which may be ramped up to 70,000." It may be recalled that Nisan and Ashok Leyland have signed an MoU with the government of Tamil Nadu for setting up of an integrated facility for all the three units at Pillaipakkam, 40 km off Chennai on a 380-acre plot. Both firms last year announced three JVs for making LCVs, powertrains and developing new technology, with an initial target to produce one lakh LCVs, at a total investment of Rs. 2,300 crore.:banana:^^:)

die4chennai August 30th, 2009, 06:38 AM CHENNAI: The Rs 38-crore Water Supply Improvement Works project in Tambaram municipality has come to a halt
after the forest department
refused to allow the municipality to lay pipes inside its Ottambakkam reserve forest area
in Oragadam. The municipality need 33 hectares of land of 30 metres width and 1,100 metres length inside the Reserve Forest to lay pipelines for the project.
The forest department is worried that at least 250 fully grown trees will have to be cut down to lay huge pipelines along one kilometer in the reserved forest. Already a large number of trees on either side of the road have been felled as part of the road widening project undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) at a cost of Rs 41.87 crore to convert the Vandalur Walajahbad road into a four-lane stretch. "Most of these trees are more than half a century old. Even if we plant saplings today, it would take several years for them to grow into big trees. On our part, we have to increase or at least maintain the existing green cover under our control, especially in reserve forest areas," sources in the state forest department told TOI.
At present, a majority of the nearly two lakh people in the municipality get water only once a week and in some areas such as East Tambaram and Selaiyur, residential colonies get water once in 10 days. Tambaram residents get only 50 lakh liters of water a day, as against their requirement of 160 lakh litres. The requirement is expected to go up to 300 lakh litres per day by next year. Water shortage has remained high on the agenda of the municipal council meetings.
Hundreds of large pipes have been lying abandoned along the 33.4-km Vandalur- Walajahbad road since two months as the multi-crore project to be executed by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has hit the roadblock. It was in April 2007, local administration minister M K Stalin announced in the Assembly that the scheme would be implemented, based on the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the TWAD a year ago.
According to the plan, half the project's cost is funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the other half is a grant from the state government and the local body's general funds.
The project envisages creation of new sources on the dry bed of the River Palar, sinking of 13 infiltration wells in the river, new main pipelines and feeder lines between the headworks and Tambaram and creation of ground-level sumps and overhead tanks.
Officials of the Tambaram municipality, however, sounded confident that the project would be revived. "Moves are afoot to get the land from the forest department on a lease of Rs 15,000 per year. Works would begin soon," Tambaram municipality chairman E Mani said.

Chennai, Aug. 30 Two bidders are competing for the integrated solid waste management project to maintain the 60-acre fruits and vegetables market in the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex and the biomethanation facility to generate power from organic waste. The bids have been called by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).
The Hyderabad-based Ramky Group and Antony Waste Handling Cell of Maharashtra are the two bidders for the operation and maintenance of the fruits and vegetables market that is part of a 300-acre market complex. Both companies are among the leading players in solid waste management.
Ramky Group is a diversified group with a presence in environment management, infrastructure and real estate development. Ramky Enviro Engineers, a group company handles municipal waste projects in Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore and Kottayam.
Antony Waste Handling is a part of the Antony Group which has a presence in automotive industry and waste handling equipment and handles waste management projects in Maharashtra, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Noida.
The Koyambedu market houses over 3,000 wholesale shops for fruits and vegetables and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Asia. Over 100,000 shoppers come to the market daily and the facility generates over a 100 tonnes of waste a day.
The winner of the bid will maintain the complex and the 250 kw power plant which uses the organic waste to generate power through biomethanation, a process that uses the combustible methane-rich gas generated during the decomposition of the waste to fuel the power plant.
The plant was established by the CMDA with the assistance of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. Out of the total project cost of Rs 5.50 crore, the Ministry has contributed Rs 3.75 crore, while the CMDA and the Market Management Committee consisting of representatives of the trade and authorities has contributed Rs 1.75 crore to this project.
The project will handle 30 tonnes of organic waste daily and produce about 230 KW power and 10 tonnes of wet compost cakes. The net power after in-house consumption shall be about 200 KW.

With land availability in clusters of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam in Chennai's suburbs nearly full, the industrial community is moving
further south, with the formal inauguration of the Cheyyar SEZ by deputy chief minister MK Stalin on Sunday.
The move to establish the SEZ helps in bringing Tiruvannamalai district into the industrialisation map of the state. Launching the Rs 300-crore, 275-acre footwear SEZ, Stalin said it would enable production and export of brands like Nike shoes from the factory near Cheyyar town, located about 110 km from Chennai.
Apart from the SEZ, the government has sanctioned 90 acres for 8 companies investing Rs 355 crore in the SIPCOT's (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) Cheyyar industrial complex. SIPCOT had acquired 630 acres of land in Mangal, Chellaperumbulimedu and Mathur villages in 1995 to set up its industrial complex but the land was lying vacant till 2006 with no takers. Of the 635 acres of land acquired in the first phase, the state has allotted 364 acres to various industries in three years.
As the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam industrial clusters were full with no further scope for land acquisition, the government has plans to acquire 2,300 acres in Kunnavakkam and nine other villages for expansion of the Cheyyar complex. Cheyyar industrial complex is part of the Chennai-Ranipet-Hosur industrial corridor promoted by the state government to attract investment. "We expect the Sriperumbudur effect to radiate further and promote similar engines of growth in Cheyyar, Ranipet and Perambalur. We are working to get some very big names into the Cheyyar industrial complex," said a senior officer.
At the function, Stalin said the state had leased 275 acres of land for 99 years at a price of Rs 90,000 per acre for Growth-Link Company as per an agreement of 2006. Changing the name as Cheyyar SEZ Developers Private Limted, the company has invested Rs 164 crore in the project, which is expected to be over by 2012-13, providing employment to 18,000 people. Already, there were 3,000 employees, 2,550 of them locals, with 50% women from the nearby villages, Stalin said. He expected the workforce would grow by 5,000 more in the second phase. Nearly 750 people from the families that parted with land for the industrial complex had been employed in the facilities.
Admitting that the government was not going to gain by way of tax revenue from industries at present, Stalin said the state was keen on industrialisation due to the cascading effect on the economy through setting up of ancillary units around an industry. This would result in employment generation for educated youth. For the much-needed infrastructure in the complex, the government has completed work on overhead tanks at a cost of Rs 7.80 crore to store water from Cheyyar river and has commissioned a 52MVA substation in the premises. State ministers K Ponmudy, E V Velu, industries secretary M F Farooqui and Tiruvannamalai collector M Rajendran participated in the function.

Chennai, Deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin will leave on a 10-day tour of the United Kingdom from here on Monday.
According to reliable sources, Mr Stalin, along with six others, will leave from Chennai international airport for London early on Monday. He is likely to return to the city on September 9, DMK sources told this paper, adding that the prime objective of the visit was to get World Bank funding for Cooum river beautification.
Mr Stalin will inspect the Thames river in London and, subsequently, hold discussions with experts about river beautification, official sources said. The discussions were mainly meant to emulate the Thames model for beautifying a sewage-filled Cooum river here, sources said. However, Mr Stalin is actually said to be going to the UK only to treat an ailment.
It may be worthwhile to recall that the deputy CM, who was then local administration minister, toured Japan and returned with JBIC (Japan Bank of International Cooperation) funding for Chennai Metro Rail and Hogenakkal drinking water projects.

PS: They are planning to visit only the rivers, if some famous cities comes in the way, they may see it too.

All these are world famous rivers. Likewise, do we have any world (in)famous sewage systems? If so, the authorities could visit them too so as to not emulate them.

India's first national medical research park, floated by well known cardiosurgeon Dr K M Cherian is being set up at 'Sricity Special Economic Zone' in the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.
Speaking to reporters here, Dr Cherian said the park, developed by the private sector Sricity Private Limited, would come up on a 360 acre site. Bio informatics and Nano Techology would be given special thrust in the park, for which the Indian Council for Medical research had given clearance, he said.
Dr Cherian said the promoter Frontier Lifeline hospital floated by him would construct an emergency care unit on NH 5, which reported a large number of accidents, in the first phase
The hospital planned a state-of-the-art multi-speciality 150 bed hospital in the area to cater to the needs of workers in the SEZ, besides rural people in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvalluvar district and Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh, he said.
Ravindra Sannareddy, founder of Sri City Private Limited, said the park would be a boon for workers in the SEZ.
He said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekara Reddy, who laid the foundation for the SEZ on August 8 last would inaugurate the shipment of goods produced at the SEZ on September 9 this year.

You would think that TN being a highly water deficient state would go all out to protect water bodies and rivers but the situation is opposite
1. Maximum number of leather tanneries
2. Maximum number of bleaching/dyeing units
3. Maximum number of slums/encroachments in waterbodies
The situation will become grave in another 15-20 years.

Chennai, Sept.1 The upcoming industrial township of Sri City is likely to have country-specific industry clusters. “We are planning a Japan cluster and a Euro cluster,” Mr Ravindra Sannareddy, Founder and Managing Director, Sri City Ltd, said here on Tuesday.
The cluster approach would help the developers of the industrial zone — which features a special economic zone, a domestic tariff area and a residential area — to provide services also based on ethnicity, he said. For example, there could be a Japanese restaurant near the Japan cluster.
He was speaking at a meeting held here to announce the setting up of medical facilities in Sri City by Dr K.M. Cherian’s Frontier Lifeline Hospital. Initially, an emergency care unit will be set up by Sri City, which will be run by Frontier Lifeline Hospital. Over time, Frontier Lifeline, which is putting up a large ‘mediville’ (or medical village) about 10 km to the south of Sri City, will put up its own 150-bed hospital in the zone.
Sri City on cloud nine
September 9 will be a notable date for Sri City, when at 9 minutes past 9 a.m., the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will inaugurate the facilities of nine manufacturing units in the zone. He is also expected the lay the foundation for nine more units.
Mr Sannareddy said that coming up as it does in a backward area, the population from the neighbouring towns such as Sulurpet, have opportunities to find employment locally, as opposed to migrating to cities. “Today, they have hope in their backyard,” he said.

Sivamani Muru September 2nd, 2009, 05:52 AM HOW FAR IS INDIA FROM BECOMING A SUPERPOWER?.
In the past battles were fought to conquer nations and the country with largest numbers of colonies under its wing became the superpower. After world war ll, the whole defination of a superpower status was redefined. 'A country that has supremacy over all other countries in the economic battle and have won and developed itself and its citizens in every field is deemed as a superpower nation'.
India is one country that has shrunk during and after independence. Under the British rule both Pakistan and Bangladesh was a part of India. Today we have lost these two large land masses. Bangladesh is always flooded by rain but if it was a part of India, we could have easily connected its rivers and brought it down up until Chennai to meet the water needs of our people. Pakistan now on the other hand is trying to declare the India's part of Kashmir that it has illegally occupied for ages as its own state. It is even trying modify its American made missiles as a tool to wage wars against India if need arises. Of more recent we have lost our Kachai Teevu to Sri Lanka. One may ask what benefit could we have over this tiny Island. Singapore was only 50 square kilometres at the time it got itself disassociated from Malaysia. Many directly ridiculed its President Lee Kuan Yew on the context of what this tiny island country can do for the world. With the Presidents rigorous effort, now Singapore is more than twice its original size by reclaiming land from the sea. Why cannot the same be applied to Kachai Teevu. The sand scrapped of its sea bed in the SethuSamudaram project could have been added on to make this Island bigger. Kachai Teevu could have been made into a modern fishing village and the Indian fishers could have moved around without fear of being hijacked by the notorious Sri Lankan army.
There is a major contrast between India and China in this matter. China has grow bigger over years. Hongkong (largest Island formerly leased out to the british) and Macau (a dutch colony) is now added to China under ONE CHINA POLICY. They are trying hard to pull Taiwan to become a part of China. They even tried hard to prevent the Dalai lama from visiting Taiwan recently because they feared that his speech may even make china's move to get Taiwan harder.
China has unscrupulously taken with them Tibet. No superpower has questioned china on this account so far. The U.S always kept a deaf ears on Tibet's cry because America has itself taken Hawaii, which was once an independent country. In August 2009, President Barrack Obama who hail from this island suggested that Hawaii will be made the 50th state of America.
The ethnic Hawaiians protested against this move and made their yearly demonstration against the U.S. Last but not the least 54,000 square kilometres of India's land (approximately the size of Uttaranchal) is under China's possession. We need not take away anybody's land but we should have stopped others from taking it from us.
In the economic race we are also losing out to China. In 2008, China unveiled its newest and most ambitious Aerodynamic model high speed train that can travel 300km/per hour (CRH 2-300) from the Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Company Workshop. This is their first Super Fast Train and now China plans to unveil its first home made jumbo jet engine by 2016, competing with global players Airbus and Boeing. The first large passenger jet (C919) is now under manufacture in china by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, which is an arm of the government owned aviation industry. China will exhibit a model of its C919 passenger jet in September 2009 (this month) at the Asian Aerospace International Expo and Congress in Hongkong. I personally urge our former president Abdul Kalam, ISRO's Annadurai and scores of HAL Engineers to visit this Expo. This will enable them to form an Idea and India should almost immediately start on with similar projects. The Government of India should extend its full supportfor HI-TECH manufacturing and research based industries.
India has a long way to go on this race of becoming a superpower.

Sivamani Muru September 2nd, 2009, 06:22 AM Tamilnadu should seriously set up food processing industries. This will relief farmers from their financial hooks and give them a future that they can rely upon. India unlike China and Thailand have only fewer food processing and canning industries. The coconut farmers are unable to sell their produce to their targeted profit when ever there is a bumper harvest and so are the Toddy Palm farmers (Pannai mara vivasaiyee). Both the tender coconut water and soft nungku jellies can be packed in tin cans as drinks for export. The jackfruits can be sun dried and fried like chips as snacks. China has far superior technique of drying fruits and by learning and adapting their techniques we can have ripe mango slices to snack all year round without the mango slices losing its juicy taste. The pineapples, riped papayas, guavas can also be preserved using similar method. They can be hygienically packed for for local consumption as well as far export.
Farmers should not only focus on primary products as growers but they must also venture into the secondary production of processing their produces. This will enable them to earn stable income.
The Tamilnadu government should help them out to become enterpreneurs.
Sivamani Muru September 2nd, 2009, 06:37 AM The first batch of H1N1 vaccines was suppose to roll off its production line in September 2009, but, the disease prevention board of America says that there may be a month's delay until they are finally out but october 2009. Already all Northern Hemisphere countries like Canada, the U.S , Iceland, Norway and parts of Europe have placed bulk reservation orders leaving Asia far behind.
Countries like India should raise its concern with World Health Organisation (WHO) to have fair distribution of the first batch of vaccines all over the world and not just to rich nations. From the hear say, I came to know that WHO has given rights to certain pharmaceutical companies to manufacture the vaccine. India's leading pharmaceutical companies too should apply and request for this production rights.
Will India's health ministry do the needful?.
sridhar_n September 2nd, 2009, 06:58 AM Sri City has done a pretty good marketing. Pleasing YSR and at the same time using the proximity to Chennai as one of its USP.
Can TN also take up a mega SEZ project near the border with AP (not sure if land is available).
I am now worried that some of the major automobile projects may go to AP, may be Tada - and still use Chennai for its marketing and logistics. I wish TN govt wakes up pretty soon and create a huge tract of land bank in the border.
bonoslack7 September 2nd, 2009, 07:39 AM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/chennai-marina-be-yacht-friendly-622
The city will become a tourist destination for international yachts once the proposed ‘Chennai Marina’, an exclusive space for pleasure boats, is set up inside the Chennai port.
According to senior port officials, the project work will start in another two months.
“The project itself is new in India and Chennai will be the second port that is establishing such a facility after Kochi Port,” said Capt Subhash Kumar, chairman of Chennai Port Trust. “In the first phase, we will have berthing facilities for 20 yachts. We are also planning the second phase that will accommodate 2,000 yachts at a time.”
He added that the port has already completed the feasibility study and the tender notices will be issued in a month.
The Chennai Marina, India’s second world-class Marina, is expected to be make Tamil Nadu one of the hottest marine tourism destinations in the world.
It will be fully dedicated to pleasure boats and would accommodate luxury yachts, catamarans, mono hulls and powerboats and would also have various recreational facilities, hotels, restaurants and yard backup for maintaining international luxury yachts.
Realising the enormous prospects of the project, the Central government has cleared funds and the project budget for the first phase would be Rs 1 crore.
“The first phase of the project, modelled on the lines of international Marinas in London, Dubai, Colombo, Singapore and Malaysia would be established at the Timber Pond area inside the port, adjacent to Dr Ambedkar dock,” said Capt Subash.
“Royal Madras Yacht Club and Tamil Nadu Sailing Association will be allowed to operate their yachts,” Capt Subash added.

MOU is signed between the company and the Govt. I dont think a MoU would even need a chief ministers sign, probably chief secretary's/ industries secretary's sign shud be enough.
There is no change in Govt because of his unfortunate death, current finance minister of the state is likely to become the chief minister.

Hi Tokavin,
We know about the Alsthom's plans for Metro rail coach manufacturing and frontier mediville's plan for Medical faciities at Sricity.

Titan Industries is planning a Rs 100-crore capital expenditure during the current financial year.
Most of it will be spent on expanding the retail footprint of the company’s brands Tanishq, Titan, Fastrack and Titan Eye+, said Mr Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director.
On Wednesday, the company launched its first large format store for its jewellery retail brand Tanishq in Chennai. The showroom is spread over 20,000 sq.ft and has stocks of jewellery worth Rs 40 crore.
Tanishq has a national footprint with 117 exclusive boutiques in 78 cities. Out of these, 95 stores are franchisee-run.
Announcing the launch of the company-run large format store, Mr Bhat said Tanishq plans to open three more such stores in major cities. Tanishq accounts for more than two-thirds of the company’s turnover of Rs 3,832 crore.
Titan Industries is a watch, jewellery, eyewear and precision engineering company, jointly promoted by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation and the Tata group.

Work has begun on the project, for which the company had got 100 acres from the Salt Department.
One of the main reasons behind the relocation is the emphasis on improved safety for oil installations.
The nearly 75-year-old terminal in Tondiarpet is located on 16 acres in a congested area with the approach roads being narrow and crowded. Hundreds of tanker-trucks transport several kilo litres of petroleum products daily from the terminal to various locations in Chennai and other districts, according to company sources.

CHENNAI: The proposed IT special economic zone (SEZ) at Taramani on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, to be developed jointly by the DLF and Tamil Nadu
Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has run into rough weather with the union commerce ministry raising objection to the site, stating that it does not measure up to a contiguous stretch of 25 acres.
The 26.64 acre land, which the DLF had bought from the Tamil Nadu government at Rs 26 crore per acre, is divided by the elevated railway track of the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS). About three acres of land lies on one side of the track and the balance on the opposite side.
People in the know of things said TIDCO had obtained an "in-principle" approval for the SEZ even before the land was sold to DLF. However, the commerce ministry insisted that the joint-venture firm apply afresh. When a fresh application was submitted, the ministry raised objection stating that the land was not contiguous.
A senior official of TIDCO, when contacted, said, "The DLF's SEZ at Gurgaon also faced the same problem. It is divided by the Delhi Metro Rail. But the project has been given approval. The same yardstick should be applied by the union ministry here too."
The DLF has been repeatedly sending representations to TIDCO to speed up the SEZ approval process, failing which, it has made it clear that it would pull out of the project and demand its money (land cost is roughly Rs 700 crore) back. As an alternative, the DLF has asked the government to identify some other land adjacent to the present site to expand the contiguous stretch to 25 acres, the minimum requirement for an SEZ. TIDCO officials, however, have pointed out that there is no such land available in the region for further expansion.
As per the proposal, the first phase (2.5 million sq ft) of the IT SEZ was expected to start functioning by 2009 end. The balance 2 million sq ft was to be readied by 2011. In all, the investment was expected to touch Rs 1,500 crore and about 45,000 people were expected to be employed there.

CHENNAI: After several failed attempts spanning decades, the Tamil Nadu government has once again drawn up an
ambitious plan to clean up
Cooum river, once a freshwater source but now an open sewer for the city's waste. The
estimated cost of cleaning up the 65-km-long channel, which empties into the Bay of Bengal, is Rs 99 crore.
As part of the initiative, a team of officials is set to visit Singapore to study the success story of Singapore river, once a polluted and smelly waterway but now one of the country's natural landmarks. The proposed visit follows a study by officials a few months ago of San Antonio river in the US.
The state government's move to study foreign models is the latest initiative in the saga of restoring the Cooum. Several schemes were launched and committees constituted over the years, but none succeeded. Records available with the state public works department reveal that efforts to improve the waterway began as early as 1872 during the British regime.
Even as state government officials are looking at implementing the new plan for the Cooum sub-basin with funding from the World Bank, experts are cautioning authorities against adopting a western model because the nature of those rivers and communities that dwell around them are dissimilar to the Cooum and its environs.
"There has been no success story in the country as far as cleaning up of rivers is concerned. The Ganga Action Plan (GAP) and the Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) were based on the Thames model but they did not work. We should develop our own model and decentralise the management system by involving local bodies and municipal corporations," says Chandra Bhushan, associate director, Centre for Science and Environment.
Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh recently informed the Lok Sabha that more than Rs 816 crore was spent on two phases of the GAP, Rs 682 crore on the first phase of the YAP and another Rs 190 crore on the second phase.

Hundreds of tanker-trucks transport several kilo litres of petroleum products daily from the terminal to various locations in Chennai and other districts, according to sources in the company sources. A fire at the lube plant on February 1 this year is cited as the immediate provocation for the relocation.
The Ennore terminal will not only be bigger, but also have state-of-the-art equipment, including a fully automated bay gantry to load 24 tanker trucks simultaneously. The tankage capacity will be 40,000 kilo litre of petrol, 60,000 KL of diesel and 20,000 KL each of kerosene and ATF. The cumulative tankage capacity of the Tondiarpet terminal is around 32,000 KL and 14 trucks could be loaded at a time, sources said.
HPCL plans to lay a pipeline from the Ennore port and Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd to the new terminal. There will also be siding for loading and unloading products. A pipeline from the port would enable the company to bring products from other refineries, including its own facility in Visakhapatnam. At present, the products are from Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd, a group company of Indian Oil Corporation.
The terminal would be ready for commissioning in a little over a year. Sources added that a national oil company was relocating its terminal from north Chennai.

The Railways is about to start another innovative experiment designed to woo business travellers. The plan is to attach an extra coach on the Bangalore-Chennai-Bangalore Shatabdi Express that will have all the facilities offered by any good business centre.
Called the ‘mobile office on track’, the coach will have GPS/GPRS connectivity, phones, WiFi connectivity for internet, LCD monitors, projectors, microphones and a satellite radio. There will even be a small pantry.
The initiative is to be managed by a private party. South Western Railway has called for bids for the project, and hopes to have it going in the next three months. The reserve price per annum is Rs 3.57 crore, which Anwar Hussain, senior commercial manager of the Bangalore division, says is the amount the Railways would have earned if the AC chair car coach were to run at full capacity.
The private party that wins the bid can charge for the services offered and will also be allowed to brand the outer panels of the coach with their corporate logo.
The Bangalore-Chennai route is a particularly good stretch for such an experiment. Most business travellers between the two cities have abandoned the air route on account of the long distance between Bangalore city and its new international airport. The time taken to fly, including the time taken to reach the airport and the airport waiting time, is not very different from the time taken by rail or road. Many are now using the road route. A ‘corporate coach’ on the train route can potentially attract people who now use the road and the few who continue to fly.
Hussain said that if the initiative were successful, the Railways would try to replicate it on other trains and try to get even air travellers to move to trains. He is hoping that travel management companies like American Express Travel, Thomas Cook or Sita Travels will take up the project. “They have tie ups with corporates to manage their entire travel requirements. So this mobile office could become part of the options they offer. It will also enable the Railways to have greater control over how the coach is managed,” he said.
Hussain’s team had previously introduced the ‘brand train’ concept that allowed corporates to brand the train in return for offering cleaning and other services inside the train. The first of these was the ‘Kurkure Express’. The scheme was later extended to other trains. The ‘mobile office’ will have GPS/GPRS, phones, WiFi, LCD monitors, projectors, microphones and a satellite radio

Industrial investments are trickling down to southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Cheyyar, about 100km from Chennai, seems to be the next stop after Sriperumbudur and Oragadam.
Recently, Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated Nike’s Rs 300 crore, 275-acre footwear SEZ in Cheyyar.
With abundant availability of cheap labour in the backward region of Tiruvannamalai district, coupled with proximity to Chennai, Cheyyar is toddling towards industrialisation. Mainly known for agriculture and weaving, the small town is on the growth map of the state government. The State Industries Promotion Corporation (SIPCOT) has already sanctioned 90 acres for eight companies in the Cheyyar Industrial complex and is also planning to acquire an additional 2,300 acres in and around the area.“We are now focussed on getting investments to move to the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. This will ensure proper spread of industrial growth and bring development across the state,” a senior state government official told The Times of India.
Cheyyar MLA, MK Vishnu Prasad of the Congress, says the constituency is ready for industrial growth as it is already an inhabited area and has proper and easy connectivity and social infrastructure. “There is a hospital about 8 km from the Cheyyar Industrial area. It will take just about 20-30 minutes to reach there. There are also hospitals in Kancheepuram, on the other side. There are enough schools in Cheyyar and in terms of connectivity, a parallel corridor is coming up near Kancheepuram,” he told TOI.
The move down south was necessitated as the government ran out of land in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam. The industrial cluster of Sriperumbudur and Oragadam is home to nearly $5 billion in investments and is often compared to China’s Shenzhen region.
Global bigwigs have made this small town, on the fringes of Chennai, their second home. Hyundai, Ford, Nokia, Flextronics, Foxconn, Motorola, Dell, Samsung, Daimler Chrysler, Renault-Nissan, Caparo Group, Moser Baer, Saint Gobain, Natrip, Sanmina, Aspocomp and many more international names are now identified with Sriperumbur and Oragadam.
Till 1996, Sriperumbudur, nearly 40 km from Chennai, was considered an isolated stretch of road that one would pass through on the way to Bangalore. The Korean car major Hyundai signing an MoU with the state government to set up a car manufacturing plant here heralded rapid large scale development in this region.
In 2009, with absolutely no more land available for investments, the state government has been trying to disperse investments to other locations. “North and north west of Chennai has been a neglected area for some time. Barring the port and related activities, there is nothing much happening there. Sipcot is trying to promote Gummidipoondi region and a couple of big investments are lined up there. The OMR is a ‘clean corridor’(or reserved for IT investments). That leaves us with just GST Road and Bangalore highway,” official sources said.
On GST Road, industries have come up on either side of the highway up to Chengalpattu and beyond. On the highway, manufacturing units have sprung up all the way up to Kancheepuram. So, with limited land availability, the state is pushing investments further south.

Tamil Nadu’s investment story is intact. Dubai-headquartered Harsha Group, which had signed an MoU with the state government to invest Rs 1,500 crore to set up a float glass factory and a heavy engineering industrial unit, is looking to scale up the investments to Rs 2,000 crore.
“The group has made progress in its plans to invest in manufacturing units in the state after signing the MoU. It has indicated its interest to invest more than Rs 1,500 crore and it may go up to Rs 2,000 crore,” a top government official told Financial Chronicle on condition of anonymity.
“A team of high-level officials from the group visited Chennai recently to update the government on the progress made in their investment plan. They also met the deputy chief minister M K Stalin, who assured them all possible help,” he said. Harsha group has signed up for a technology partner and has also achieved financial closure for the proposed investments in the state. Harsh group manufactures equipment and provides services to various sectors.

ya very true, but i feel that high speed dedicated rail services(could be the metro too..as in the case of Delhi) to the proposed airport from different points in the city would be more convenient to the air travelers coming from the city. and what is more important is that if the greenfield airport is coming up, then there must definitely be a rail link connecting the old airport and the new airport.
otherwise, suppose a person is flying to EWR(Newark) from Madurai in Jet Airways. let us be optimistic and take this as the worst case scenario(though the probability of this being the actual scenario is more). The flight from Madurai to Chennai lands in the old airport and the connecting flight to EWR is from the greenfield airport, if there is no link between the two airports, then it will literally be a nightmare for the passengers. i hope the government takes into consideration all these factors.

Travelling in suburban trains in chennai is far more comfortable than in Mumbai.Despite heavely crowded, mumbai suburban trains are run more efficiently maintaining time and the compartments are far more cleaner than in chennai.Among the cities in the south chennai has the best suburban train services with more frequency and longer distance covered catering to a million commuters per day unlike in Hyderabad which caters to a little above one lac commuters and much less in Bangalore.U say "lot of cities are coming up with lot of rail lines and chennai is left behind"Can u elaborate on that.Except in Delhi where the metro line second phase work is going on there are hardly any activity in other cities.

no, i mean metro is first only for areas that have high traffic. We are not a super rich state to provide metro system where ever we fancy.
I dont have the traffic figures for Sriperumbudur route, but i can guess that currently it wont have high traffic other than the peak hours, that will make the metro system viable. It will be feasible and we will have one in the future, but not now.

When you provide metro connectivity to Sriperumbudur and IT corridor... real estate will pick up and people who work in those areas will start settling there... thats right, but who will be interested to fund a project based on the future likely demand. Govt's priority will be projects that have current demand.
According to few sources in the industry who work for NHAI, the reason for slow progress in our National Highways development in the last two years is neither TR Balu or Kamalnath, but Montek Singh Aluwalia. He seems to be adamant that Govt shudnt invest its money but shud go for private finance (BOOT/PFI/PPP). Most of the sections with high returns were already completed and the sections that the govt want to build/upgrade now are less attractive to the private companies and thats why there is less development in highways sector.

The Chennai Corporation will by September 15 start widening Wallajah Road and Swami Sivananda Salai, two important roads near the new Assembly complex.
The work forms part of the implementation of the traffic impact study for effectively handling increase in traffic once the complex is opened.
The road widening work is scheduled to get over before the completion of the Assembly complex. The PWD has asked the Corporation to complete it before March, according to officials.
Wallajah Road would be widened into a 29-metre four-lane stretch with a 2-metre footpath and bus bays on either side, said Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. Movable medians would be used both on Wallajah Road and Swami Sivananda Salai to regulate traffic. The widening of Swami Sivananda Salai to 29 metres with 1.5-metre footpath on the southern side and greenery on the northern side was also part of the PWD proposal.
An earlier proposal to construct two pedestrian subways on Wallajah Road has now been dropped. Instead, the Corporation has decided to construct two foot overbridges on the road. The Highways Department, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the Traffic police have been informed about their role in the widening of the roads, including shifting of their utilities.
According to a PWD official, modifications of the Victoria Hostel Road-Wallajah Road junction are to be made by acquiring land from the Madras University side.

It is true that we need to look at present traffic..however for infrastructure decisions in any place whether super-rich/rich/poor future plays a bigger role than the present ..The thumb rule in infrastructure projects is that "you build it and it will be used" .So present traffic is never a justification for rejecting a infrastructure project with high future gowth esp one like sriperumbudur where there is a growth of 100% yOy in investments

Thames river, few centuries ago, during the era of kings rule shared similar fate as the Chennai's Cooum river. That were the dark ages when private toilets never existed, and the people answered their nature's call along the banks of Thames river.
At the peak of one saturation point it became unbearable and the king ordered the closure of Thames river for such activities and the squatters and washers were arrested. The King began beautification of Thames river. Today a trip to London is incomplete without visiting the Thames river. Mr Stalin's move and his cause of this visit to the Thames is of similar agenda to turn Coovam back into Chennai's promising waterways that is both odourless and colourless. Let this long unresolved problems end to become chennai's newest icon.
Sivamani Muru September 7th, 2009, 06:51 AM If proposed greenfield airport starts(which I really doubt becuase of the economy) then definitely sriperumbudur needs rail connection.

Certainly rail line connectivity is crucial if greenfield airport materialises at Sriperumbudur. One within the airport from the existing domestic airport building to the new airport like the one in Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) where only checked in air passengers can use this route and another one, an external route outside the airport from Chennai city to the greenfield airport that anyone can use. The KLIA showcases both internal and external rail routes. It's worth taking a look at these two rail lines at the very planning phase of the greenfield airport.
ferrari_fan September 7th, 2009, 07:51 AM ^^ For me, Sriperumbudur will need a metro link, an express road link and a rail freight link to Chennai - you're looking at a massive industrial investment region as well as a massive international airport and so I think all these links are vital..
I hope the powers that be keep all these in mind when they plan connectivity to that side of town..

City could face shortage of 8 lakh dwelling units by 2026
CHENNAI: A year ago, in its second master plan, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) had envisaged making the Chennai metropolitan
Area (CMA) slum-free and housing for all by 2026.
The plan stipulated that in projects on more than one hectare (2.5 acres) 10% of the area, either in the same place or within a two km radius, be set apart for economically weaker section (EWS) and low income group (LIG) housing. It also gave 0.5 additional floor space index (FSI is the ratio of the land area to the built-up space) for EWS projects with a unit size of up to 45 sq metres (1 sq metre is 10.76 sq ft). The state government recently increased the FSI for EWS housing in the CMA by 50% and for middle income group housing by 30%. Few builders have promoted a EWS project.
CMDA member-secretary Vikram Kapur estimates that by 2026, Chennai could face a shortfall of eight lakh dwelling units. Most of the homeless would be the poor. The city now needs two lakh dwelling units to rehabilitate slum dwellers and it could cost a staggering Rs 100 billion, said Kapur. Obviously, the government does not have that kind of money.
And the poor don't have either. When agencies like the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and the Slum Clearance Board do not have the resources to provide such huge housing stock, the private sector has to be roped in. But which builder will do it as a corporate social commitment?
Kapur suggested that builders promoting EWS housing be given transferable development rights that they can use while developing premium apartments in posh areas. He also suggested that the stamp duty for EWS housing be reduced to Rs 100.
"Let the government unlock its land stock, create enough support infrastructure and give it to builders free of cost for promoting housing stock. In turn, we can earmark 10% space for EWS apartments and hand them over to the government for slum rehabilitation," said P Suresh, MD, Arun Excello.
Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India, Tamil Nadu chapter secretary, T Chitty Babu, said: "We can provide affordable housing at Rs 5 lakh a unit provided the government creates a conducive eco-system. A person who buys my Rs 5 lakh apartment 50 km from the city should also be able to find a job there. He will not travel all the way to the city for working on a daily basis."

Corpn extends poster ban to two more arterial roads
CHENNAI: Following the successful enforcement of the ban on posters and wall graffiti on Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai, the Chennai Corporation has
decided to extend the ban to two other arterial roads in the city. Effective September 10, no posters or wall writings will be allowed on Dr Radhakrishnan Salai and Tiruvottiyur High Road, according to mayor M Subramanian.
In the wake of widespread criticism from many quarters regarding the defacement of public and private walls by political parties and individuals, the local body decided to enforce the ban on Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai June 10 onwards. The commitment of corporation staff, backed by vigilance from senior officials, has led to a fairly successful enforcement of the ban.
"The civic body has filed two cases with the police for disfigurement of walls," Subramanian said. Based on a complaint from its Saidapet zonal office, cases were registered against a private firm and the building owner, under Section 4 (1) of the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1959. According to rules, whoever affixes or inscribes or exhibits on any place open to public view any objectionable advertisement will incur three months imprisonment or a fine of Rs 200.
Subramanian said corporation field staff would remove posters and graffiti on identified roads September 9 onwards. "Like we did on Anna Salai, we plan to have wall murals on several other roads. Triplicane, Nungambakkam and Tondiarpet zonal offices will soon float tenders to engage painters. My aim is to see the ban on posters enforced across the city," he stressed.
According to sources, although the job of painting wall murals was to be taken up by students of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, financial constraints compelled the civic body to seek private painters who are paid Rs 25 per sq ft. About 10,000 sq ft of wall area have been covered by murals so far.
It may be recalled that the state government had banned posters and graffiti on 223 bridges/subways maintained by the corporation and 27 bridges under the control of the highways department and Southern Railway, effective August 1.

Corpn to send SMS alert on your child's vaccination dates
CHENNAI: The city corporation has launched a new project, the SMS (short messaging service) alert for vaccination of children below one year. The
exercise is likely to benefit about 80,000 children born in hospitals in Chennai every year.
Inaugurating the programme at a maternity hospital on Arcot Road in Kodambakkam, mayor M Subramanian said that the initiative, a first in the country, will help mothers remember the immunisation schedule for children and, in turn, aid the fight against potential deadly diseases. "Parents who have registered their mobile phone numbers at the time of birth of their children in nursing homes or corporation hospitals in the city will receive the SMS alert," he pointed out.
The programme is part of the corporation's e-governance initiative. The civic administration proposes to send alerts for immunisation of children below one year. Vaccines such as Hepatitis B, DPT (Dyptheria, Pertusis and Tetenus), measles and polio are administered within 12 months of birth.
According to Subramanian, the local body has been taking efforts to improve the standards of health care. Recently, eight maternity hospitals falling under corporation zones were upgraded into 24-hour emergency obstetric centres to cater to the needs of locals. Ten thousand disposable surgical clothing kits have been given to all hospitals that until recently were reusing surgical clothes for every Caesarian section.

The company is also looking to upgrade the quality of its petrol and high-speed diesel to meet Euro IV pollution norms
Chennai: A subsidiary of the state-owned Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, Chennai Petroleum Corp. Ltd will invest Rs1,000 crore in fiscal 2010 to expand its refinery’s annual production capacity by 1 million tonnes (mt) and revamp its fuel production facility, a top company official said.

Improving quality: Indian Oil Corp.’s Haldia refinery. The firm’s subsidiary, Chennai Petroleum, is looking to upgrade the quality of its petrol and high-speed diesel to meet Euro IV pollution norms.
The company is also looking to upgrade the quality of its petrol and high-speed diesel to meet Euro IV pollution norms, chairman and managing director K.K. Acharya said after the company concluded its 43rd annual general meeting on Monday.
Chennai Petroleum’s Manali refinery in Chennai currently has a capacity of 3mt a year. The proposed expansion by the end of 2009, costing around Rs200 crore, will help the company produce value-added products such as liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha and high-speed diesel.
As for upgrading the quality of its spirits and diesel, the move has been necessitated by India’s decision to implement the Euro IV emission and fuel norms in 11 major cities by 1 April. The rest of the country has to subscribe to Euro III norms by then.
The project, costing Rs2,615 crore, would serve Bangalore and Chennai. The first phase will be completed by the end of fiscal 2010.
Acharya added that Chennai Petroleum, formerly Madras Refineries Ltd, is revamping a production unit at an estimated cost of Rs273 crore to produce high-quality petrol. The process is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
In addition to these, if talks with third-party petrochemical companies to sell propylene succeed, Chennai Petroleum plans to set up a new unit capable of producing 40,000 tonnes a year at a cost of around Rs350 crore.
The company is currently expanding capacity at its existing unit to 40,000 tonnes from 30,000-35,000 tonnes a year.
“We are scouting for interested parties who can take at least 40,000 tonnes of propylene per annum. If we get the interested parties, then we will go ahead with propylene expansion,” said Acharya. He declined to name the companies the firm is in talks with.
Chennai Petroleum may also consider setting up more windmills for captive power generation, Acharya said. The company currently has a 17.5MW windmill in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Petroleum Corporation (CPCL) will set up a Rs 3,500-crore high conversion 'resid upgradation unit' to increase the distillate yield, company's Chairman S Behuria said today.
The project is expected to be completed by 2012-end, Behuria said at CPCL's 43rd annual general meeting held here.
He said the company has also decided to put up a Rs 850 crore single point mooring for crude oil receipt at Ennore, "in view of the abnormal delay in obtaining the right of way for a new crude oil pipeline from Chennai Port to Manali."
The proposed facilities would ensure Very Large Crude Carrier handling and result in saving on freight for crude oil transportation for Manali refinery. It will facilitate production of value added products like LPG.
Behuria said project execution activities for refinery III capacity expansion from 3 MMTPA to 4 MMTPA was in full swing and the project is expected to be completed by 2009 end at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore.
He said in the first quarter of 2009-10 CPCL made net profit of Rs 304.72 crore. CPCL had posted a net loss of Rs 397.28 crore during 2008-09.
This was mainly due to 'unprecedented volatile market conditions' that prevailed from the second quarter of 2008-09 resulting in adventitious inventory loss and processing of high cost crude in a falling market. The company is currently revamping the existing Naphtha Hydro treating/Semi-regenerative catalytic reforming unit to continuous catalytic reforming mode at an estimated cost of Rs 273 crore and the project is expected to be completed by end of 2009, Behuria said.
The company has also undertaken the auto fuel quality upgradation project at an estimated cost of Rs 2,615 crore in the Manali Refinery.
This is being done to produce high value distillates such as MS and HSD meeting Euro IV specifications for Chennai and Bangalore and "to upgrade product quality from Bharat Stage II to Euro III equivalent specifications for the rest of the locations from April 2010 onwards, as per the auto fuel policy of the Centre".

CHENNAI: The ministry for new and renewable energy, in its solar mission to be
launched on November 14, will introduce a 55 % subsidy on
solar power installations
for home and office use and will allocate Rs.90000 crore till 2030 for solar power development, according to Union minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah.
"That is one avenue of power that remains under-explored in India. We have managed to do the best we can in hydel power with the minimal rainfall we get. But, we have left our ample solar resources under utilised," he said. "In order to make advances in solar power, we are in talks with western countries like the US, Spain and Germany for free technology transfers."
"Free technology transfers will attract conditionalities, of course. We are trying to work those out," he told ET on Monday. The Minister was here for launching the Indo-Finnish joint venture, WinWind's wind turbine manufacturing facility at Vangal in Tiruvalluvar district.
NRI industrialist C Sivasankaran promoted Siva Ventures acquired a controlling stake in Finnish wind power company WinWind in 2006. The JV which operates three manufacturing plants in Europe, catering to European demand, has established its first facility in the district about 50 km away from Chennai.
The plant built on 67 acres at an investment of Rs.375 crore will manufacture 1 MW turbines, with 60-65% localisation and wind mill blades, at a capacity of 4 wind turbine generators (WTGs) (and 12 blades) per day or 1000 MW per annum. The company plans to scale this up to 8 WTGs (and 24 blades) per day or 2400 MW per annum.
"We are also owners of the 3 MW wind turbine technology, through this joint venture, and will invest in a completely new set up for manufacture of 3 MW turbines and blades, nearby in the next 18-24 months," said Siva Group CEO V Srinivasan. "We are presently only in the manufacturing space. But, the Indian wind energy space expects turn key solutions from manufacturers. In that case, we will be expected to acquire land, set up the wind farm etc. But, we are not getting into all those yet."
The company is not considering exports from India at the moment. "There is tremendous potential in the Indian market, especially in the re-powering of old wind farms, which have installed 500 KW or lower wattage turbines in the past," Mr.Srinivasan said.
But, the company's USP, at present, is its focus on low cutting speed generators(146 rotations per minute) which are capable of working in class II and III wind areas, that is areas with wind speeds as low as 3.5 to 4 metres per second. "We will soon be developing technology to run in very high speed wind velocities, like 14-18 m/s, so that we can repower in class I areas like southern Tamil Nadu," said WinWind CEO Iikka Hakala.
Winwind MD Rajindra Valsalan said, "We are following an outsource model of production. We source our gear boxes and other allied equipment, built to our design and specifications, from companies like Kirloskar, KPCL in Karnataka.
" WinWind has attracted investments from Abu Dhabi government's clean technology arm Masdar, in the form of convertible bonds, that are expected to be diluted in the coming 18 months. When that happens, Siva Ventures will hold a 51% stake in WinWind and the Finnish Industrial Investment agency will hold 6-7%. Winwind's annual turnover stood at 90 million Euro in 2008-09 and the company has envisaged 40% growth this year.
Mr.Srinivasan ruled out any possibility of a foray into China or acquisitions in India saying, "We are comfortable with the outsourced model we are working in. We are after all owners of the technology. And that is why there is fear of reverse engineering and patent infringement in China."
Speaking on the occasion, TN electricity minister Arcot N Veerasamy said the state government will invest not less than Rs.20000 crore in evacuation infrastructure . "We are targeting installation of 6000 MW in the thermal energy space and the Union government has planned 4000 MW. So, by 2014, we will have 10000 MW of newly installed power capacity."

Mad 4 Madras September 8th, 2009, 10:43 AM Work resumes on Tambaram water project
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4983491.cms
CHENNAI: Decks have been cleared for the resumption of the Rs 38-crore Tambaram water supply improvement works with the Union Environment and
Forest Ministry giving its nod to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) to lay pipelines inside the Ottambakkam reserve forest area in Oragadam for the water project.
On Monday, workers of the TWAD Board were clearing the forest area to lay pipe. TWAD Board which executes the project on behalf of Tambaram municipality needs 33 hectares of land of 30 metres width and 1,100 metres length inside the reserve forest to lay pipelines for the project. The Times Of India had reported (August 30) that the project has been stalled since the forest department did not give permission for the pipe laying inside the reserve forest.
Sources in the forest department said that nearly 250 mature trees have to be cut to lay pipelines inside the Ottambakkam reserve forest area in Oragadam. Already, hundreds of trees were cut as part of the road widening project undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) at a cost of Rs 41.87 crore to convert the 33.4km Vandalur Walajabad road, which is a state highway, into a six-lane stretch.
TWAD Board officials said that it took them more than four months to get the nod of various state and central agencies to lay pipelines inside the reserve forest area. "We would complete laying of pipelines inside the forest area within a fortnight," an official said.
"TNRDC also wants a portion of the Ottambakkam reserve forest area for a road project. This means more tree felling and less space for us to plant saplings. However, with the Union environment and forest ministry giving its nod, we have no option but to allow trees to be cut," said an official in the state Forest department.
The Tambaram water project, announced by deputy chief minister M K Stalin in April 2007, gets 40% of its cost from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), while another 10% is mobilised through a long-term loan by the Tambaram municipality. The rest of the project cost is borne by the local body. "Out of the total 55km between the water source in Palar river and Tambaram, pipelines remain to be laid only along one kilometer in the Ottambakkam reserve forest area. Once this work get completed, we would supply 97 lakh litres of water everyday through these pipelines. Water would be made available also from 13 infiltration wells in Melacherry and five overhead tanks," an official said.
At present, a majority of the nearly two lakh people in the Tambaram municipality get water only once a week and in some areas such as East Tambaram and Selaiyur, residential colonies get water once in 10 days. Tambaram residents get only 50 lakh litres of water a day compared to their requirement of 160 lakh litres. The requirement is expected to go up to 300 lakh litres per day by next year.

:nuts:If 4WTGs and 12 blades gives 1000MW, how cum 8WTGs and 24 blades gives 2400MW (must be 2000MW only)????
I'm not an engineer just a mathematician can someone through light on this
BTW where is the source for this news
In the absence of detailed calculation for the capacity calculation, even your calculation, assuming a linear relationship between WTG & MW, is wrong.
if 4 wind turbines (with 12 blades) produce 1000 MW,
then,
8 WTG ( 12 blades) should give 2000 MW.
If they had 24 blades, then depending on their relationship to the power output will be higher than 2000 MW.

Mad 4 Madras September 9th, 2009, 09:02 AM Fellow guys, does anybody have any updates on the Financial City?

Riva_Philip September 9th, 2009, 09:28 AM Kathir is right. They are going to create two more corporation in suburbs:
1. Chennai South (Chennai-Tambaram), comprises of all suburban Municipalities, Town panchayats, Village Panchayats in Kanchipuram district
2. Chennai North (Chennai-Ambattur), comprises of all suburban Municipalities, Town panchayats, Village Panchayats in Tiruvallur district.
However, some Municipalities, TownPanchayats and Village Panchayats are excluded from the nwly formed corporations.
Refer this map:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4oBKlv5UVEA/SKQ5VY9384I/AAAAAAAABLg/VugW6NpRBhQ/s1600-h/Chennai+Corps.jpg
Yellow - Ambattur (Chennai North) Corporation
Pink - Tambaram (Chennai South Corporation)
Green - Excluded area, which is part of Chennai Metro
However, I feel, it is better to include those excluded areas also with new corporations. However I feel, Chennai North will be a larger corporation, then. Hence, there is a need to create 3 new corporations instead of 2
1. Chennai North (Thiruvottriyur) - Madhavaram, Manali, Thiruvottriyur, Kathivakkam, Ennore, Red Hills, Minjur, Ponneri
2. Chennai West (Ambattur) - Ambattur, Avadi, Tiruverkadu, Poonamalli, Madhuravayal, Valsaravakkam, Kundrathur, Porur, Ayyappanthingal, Saligramam, Pattabiram, Annannur, Thirunindravur, Orgadam, Arakkambakkam
3. Chennai South (Tambaram) - Tambaram, Chromepet, Kilkattalai, Perungulathur, Vandalur, Anakaputhur, Mambakkam, Solinganallur, Chemancherry, Injambakkam, Medavakkam, Madambakkam, Vengaivasal, Hasthinapuram, Nandambakkam, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Pammal, etc
The areas like Alandur, ST Thomas Mount, Pallavaram, Meenambakkam, Trishulam, Pallavaram, Madipakkam, Kotivakkam, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, IT Corridor etc can be merge with present Chennai corporation. All these new areas can be included in Chennai district too.
Thus, entire Chenai Metro will come under 4 Municipal Corporations of Chennai, Chennai North (Thiruvottriyur), Chennai West (Ambattur) and Chennai South (Tambaram). Of these, Chennai will be part of Chennai district, Chennai North and Chennai West will be part of Tiruvallur district and Chennai South will be part of Kanchipuram district. Otherwise, GoTN can include all these corporations in Chennai district.
It is also bette rto include Chennai City, Ambattur, Thiruvottriyur, and Tambaram corporations in Chennai district.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation inaugurated a night shelter for street children in Kodungaiyur in North Chennai on Tuesday. The first of its kind to be run by a local body in the country, the shelter, set up at a cost of of Rs 10.45 lakh, is located above a primary school.
Four rooms have been built to accomodate more than 50 children. "Children who are live on the streets are subjected to lot of harrassment, including sexual abuse. The corporation has taken the lead by setting up such a facility for the welfare of children," Mayor M Subramanian said.
As many as 32 children were enrolled in the shelter on the first day. Most of the children are ragpickers, who were in the corporation's dumping ground in Kodungaiyur. After a tendering process, the civic body chose Madras Christian Council of Social Welfare (MCCS), a non-governmental organisation, to run the centre for two years. The corporation will bear the maintenance charges.
According to MCCS executive secretery R Isabel, the children would be brought into the mainstream soon. "We will collobrate with other NGOs, to provide non-formal and continuous education. The older children, who are illiterate will be given skill training," Isabel said. The shelter offers beds and bathing facilities, besides personality development programmes.
As part of the contract, the NGO will provide dinner at Rs 10 to those children who earn. The corporation's education department is meeting owners of restaurants and philanthropists in the locality, to arrange for food to the remaining children. "Things will be sorted out soon," education officer T Mohana Kumar said.
In this academic year, the corporation with the help of the labour department has enrolled more than 824 child labourers in non-formal education programmes. The children are given books, bags, lunch boxes, stationery, which are funded by corporates, while parents are given skill training and loans from banks to improve their socio-economic status.

venkatm September 10th, 2009, 08:19 PM What stupidity you mean here? Can you explain?
1. Central station does not have enough parking
2. This is the point where the 2 proposed metro corridors meet
3. This space is needed to provide connectivity between the 2 Park Stations (TBM-beach and MRTS) and the metro
4. Bus stop near GH can be moved here for buses proceeding towards PH Road
4. A dirty stinky canal runs adjacent to it.
5.The GH is already too big. What we need is decentralization, not a bigger hospital
6. Blood bank needs about 10000 sq ft of Airconditioned/chiller space and can be built anywhere else in Chennai
Using 14 acres of valuable land for a unneeded hospital is stupid and not visionary.
It is probably being done for contract related bribes and MK's craving for buildings bearing his name.

It's bonanza time for builders and developers in the city. After slashing infrastructure and amenity charges, the state government has introduced premium floor space index (FSI is the ratio of land area to built-up area) in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) with a view to permitting builders construct extra floor space against payment of a premium.
According to a government order passed on Wednesday, the premium FSI is applicable to the entire CMA limits, comprising 1,189 sq km area falling under Chennai corporation, 16 municipalities, 20 town panchayats and 214 village panchayats in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts. The Red Hills reservoir catchment region and areas adjoining water bodies maintained by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board for drinking water purpose have been exempted from paying premium FSI. Premium FSI was announced in the second master plan for CMA, released in September 2008, but it has come into effect only on September 9, 2009, the date of issue of the GO.
FSI can be availed on all plots abutting roads that have a minimum width of 30 feet. The premium FSI for plots abutting roads that have a width of 30 feet or more and below 40 feet is 20% of the normal FSI. For plots that abut roads that are 40 feet to below 60 feet, the premium FSI is 30%, and for plots that abut roads having a width of 60 feet or more, it is 40%. For example, a person who proposes to avail premium FSI on 1,000 sq ft land abutting 40 feet road (which has a normal FSI of 1.5) can construct up to 1,950 sq ft instead of the normal 1,500 sq ft. However, a maximum cap of one FSI has been fixed for the premium FSI. Otherwise, the promoter cannot avail a premium FSI of more than 1,000 sq ft on land measuring 1,000 sq ft.
Regarding payment, the promoter who avails one sq metre premium FSI on land eligible for a normal FSI of 1.5, has to pay the guideline value of 0.66 sq metres of land as premium FSI charges. In case the land is eligible for two FSI, for every one sq metre of premium FSI the promoter avails, he has to pay a guideline value of 0.5 sq metre of land as premium FSI fees. If the land is eligible for a normal FSI of 2.5, then the promoter has to pay a guideline value of 0.4 sq metre of land for every one sq metre premium FSI he builds. The guideline value fixed by the registration department is applicable for calculating the charges.
The applicant has to remit the premium FSI charges upfront to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) before getting planning permission for the project. The amount thus collected from the promoters will be remitted in a separate government account, which will be utilised for infrastructure development in that area, the GO said. Since the premium FSI has not been introduced with retrospective effect, all building violations which have taken place in the city in the past will not stand to gain from it.
Reacting to the GO, Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India's Tamil Nadu chapter president Prakash Challa said, "It will help builders exploit fully land in the city where price is prohibitively high."

Our Bureau
Chennai, Sept. 11 The Corporation of Chennai (CoC) has invited bids from private developers, on design, build, operate and transfer basis, for construction and maintenance of fully automatic multi-level car parking facility in Broadway bus terminus.
The tender document issued by CoC states that the parking facility to be constructed in the 3,000-sq.m. land at the Broadway bus stand will have 610 equivalent car space.
According to the tender document, the car population in the city grew by more than 10-fold to 1.7 million units in 2005, and is still growing rapidly. The parking demand during peak hour increased to 13,000 passenger car equivalent units against the available authorised parking lot of 5,100 units.
Therefore, the only solution is to resort to automatic multi-level car parking facilities. Initially, the project will come up in Broadway bus stand. Based on the success, the facility will be extended to other areas.
Bids invited
Towards this, CoC is inviting proposals from private developers. The builder will be given rights for 20 years – two years for construction and the rest for operating it. Parking fee will be prescribed by the Corporation.
To facilitate revenue, the operator CoC will not permit paid parking within the 500-metre radius of the planned facility.
In addition to offering parking facility, the builder could utilise the additional space for commercial activities.
The bidder can enter into an agreement with the end-users for the purpose of undertaking commercial activities in the commercial facility without sub-leasing the area.

Hi-tech warehouse: Redington India’s Automated Distribution Centre at Kavaraipettai, about 45 km from Chennai near Gummudipoondi on the National Highway connecting Chennai with Kolkata.
Chennai, Sept. 11 Redington India’s ‘Automated Distribution Centre’ near Chennai, a fully WiFi enabled, ‘hi-tech’ godown, will be fully operational in a couple of months.
Set up with an investment of Rs 30 crore, the ADC features what is called a Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) racking system. Pallet racks are placed very close together; the WiFi enables handheld devices identify the desired object precisely in quickly. Loading and unloading happens with a side-loading fork truck.
Mr R. Arunachalam, General Manager, Supply Chain Business Initiatives, Redington, says that with VNA, about 50 per cent more floor space can be made available than with a wide aisle solution. VNA racking also increases pallet storage by leveraging vertical space. “Given land prices in metros, higher vertical utilisation is important,” observes Mr Arunachalam. The ADC has some 9,000 pallet locations in a vertical storage of racking and around 12,000 shelving locations, as well as a bulk storage area. There is also enough room for further expansion.

die4chennai September 13th, 2009, 05:10 AM CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will construct an underground
sewage canal from the Nesapakkam
treatment plant to dispose treated effluent directly into the Adyar river. This
could help in reducing pollution of the water body.
CMWSSB will also construct a 54 MLD (million litres per day) sewage treatment plant at Nesappakam, adjacent to the present 63 MLD unit that treats sewage from K K Nagar, Saidapet, MGR Nagar, Jafferkhanpet, Ashok Nagar, CIT Nagar and Valsaravakkam.
Metrowater has received funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), which will be used to construct the new plant and the underground canal. Construction is likely to take two years and the total cost is estimated to be around Rs 50 crore.
Currently, treated sewage is let out through a canal that passes through a residential area with a population of about 30,000. "The 2-km underground canal will start from the plant and end at the Adyar river. Treated effluent from the three units in Nesapakkam will be let out into the canal and then into the river," said a senior Metrowater official.
The official said that treated sewage did not pollute; it only contained the permissible amounts of biochemical oxidants and suspended solids. "Once the sewage reaches our plant, we chlorinate and treat it. The water is usable and does not stink. The effluent is then let out into the river."
According to him, treated effluent was getting contaminated because sewage was being let out by residents staying alongside the canal. "The canal has been encroached upon. The stench emanates from the treated effluent because of the sewage discharged by the residents. Once the underground canal is complete, there will be no pollution or contamination," said the official.

Sathisht77 September 13th, 2009, 07:32 PM IP transformation centre opens in Chennai
Alcatel-Lucent has launched an Internet Protocol Transformation Centre (IPTC) in Chennai, India. The first of its kind in the sub-continent, the centre will develop, integrate and test end-to-end IP networking solutions for Alcatel-Lucent's India and global customers as they migrate to next-generation architectures.
Alcatel-Lucent's India IPTC enables service providers to design, test and integrate their solutions in a risk-free environment, as if it were their own network. It helps them shorten the IP transformation trajectory and their time to market while allowing them to keep costs under control and focus on serving their customers. The IPTC at Chennai hosts about 50 technologies.
The IPTC is networked with Alcatel-Lucent's existing IPTCs and network integration centres located in Antwerp, Belgium; Singapore; Murray Hill, Naperville and Plano in the United States, as well as with multiple R&D labs worldwide, including India. These centres, which share knowledge, resources and best practices, help service providers execute their IP Transformation projects.

Chennai has joined a select few centres in the world to have Intelligent Operating Room (iOR) and BrainSUITE Intra CT facilities that are stated to vastly improve diagnostic and surgical outcomes for neurological, orthopaedic and trauma cases.
The BrainSUITE iCT launched at Parvathy Hospital on Monday is a software-driven treatment system from the stable of Germany-based BrainLAB that combines the best of graphic imaging and navigation-guided surgery. The facility - the first in India - is only the third of its kind in Asia and the eighth in the world.
Launching the facilities, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said India, especially Chennai, had achieved renown as a hub for high-quality and low-cost medical tourism. At the same time, there is a pressing need to deliver the fruits of medical advancement at the doorstep of the poor, he said.
“We see on one side the rise of corporate hospitals on a par with international standards. But on the other side we see rural poor in search of specialists for treatment,” Mr. Barnala said.
Pointing out that trauma was a leading cause for death, the Governor cited statistics which showed that Tamil Nadu was among the five States to record the highest number of road traffic accident deaths. It was worrying that two-thirds of the 1.64 lakh deaths in 2008 were of persons in the 16-44 age group, he said.
Stefan Vilsmeier, CEO BrainLAB, said the iOR represented the key facets of technological advancement -high resolution imaging and navigation-guided surgery.
Parvathy Hospital chairman S. Muthukumar said the institution aimed to raise the level of precision in less-invasive surgery in the areas of neuro-surgical, joint, trauma and spine care in the country.
E. Karunanidhi, chairman, Pallavaram Municipality, S.S.K. Marthandam, chairman and director of orthopaedics, Sri Ramachandra University, and K. Narayan Rao, secretary, Jai Gopal Garodia National Higher Secondary School, were among those present.

Work is apace on the Chennai Corporation project to digitise details of maps pertaining to 155 wards, including their boundaries, all streets and properties of the civic body.
The initiative is part of the Corporation’s objective to digitally map all the structures to improve delivery of services and address under-assessment of property. The exercise has been completed in 66 wards and the remaining work is expected to be completed in a month.
This is the basic component of the Corporation’s proposed Geographic Information System service. In the next stage, the civic body would undertake a comprehensive field survey of the attributes for road network, properties and other physical features, including those of historic monuments.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni told The Hindu that the civic body planned to use the database to accurately assess the area of all properties. The work order for GIS service in two zones was issued recently. The civic agency would scrutinise bids received for the work to survey the field attributes on another 50 sq km, for which digitised maps are available.
The Corporation would collect data on non-spatial attributes and integrate it with base maps for better management, planning, administration and decision-making and augment its revenue through collection of property tax.

Appaswamy Real Estates has struck a deal with the Rakindo Group to jointly develop large-sized residential projects in the key locations
of Kotturpuram and Pallikarnai in Chennai. The projects, coming up on 110 grounds (1 ground = 2400 sq ft), is estimated to have a sale value of Rs 250 crore.
Though the land-owner and the developer did not divulge on the deal details as far as price is concerned, industry trackers ET spoke to peg the 30-ground Kotturpuram property at Rs 60-crore and that of Pallikarnai (80 grounds) at Rs 40-crore.
Rakindo Group is making its debut in India with its $1.5 billion integrated township project in Coimbatore. Construction activity has been on for a while now. According to a senior Rakindo official, integrated township is its forte.
But as development in central business districts is not its core competence, the group decided to partner with Appaswamy Real Estates, its MD Prasad Koneru told ET.
Incidentally, both the properties were purchased recently after long drawn negotiations but it is gleaned from the market that the deal between Appaswamy Real Estates and Rakindo Group was struck last month. The Kotturpuram property was purchased from a Christian association, while the other land parcel in Pallikarnai was bought from an individual.
It is learnt that the Locke Road Kotturpuram property is located next to Kottur Villa, a property developed by Appaswamy Real Estates, and is in the vicinity of Adyar villa area, belonging to Spic CMD A C Muthiah. The Pallikarnai land parcel is situated a kilometre away from Kamakoti hospital on the Medavakkam-Velachery road.
When contacted, Appaswamy COO T S S Krishnan confirmed that the deal was concluded about a month ago. There is a proposal to develop multi-storied buildings over 5.30 lakh sq ft in Pallikarnai and 1.25 lakh sq ft in Kotturpuram. Of the total 6.55 lakh sq ft built area, Rakindo is to get a share of 2.6 lakh sq ft built up area.
Two special purpose vehicles would be floated to execute the projects, he said.
Rakindo Group is a joint venture between Rakeen, a joint stock company promoted by the government of Ras-Al-Khaimah, UAE and the Trimex Group, India. The property development and master planning company has been designing and developing properties and resorts in the Middle East, China, India and Europe.

Chennai: The ambitious project of the Tamil Nadu government to create a financial hub in Chennai is getting shape, with a team of officials identifying Sholinganallur as a possible location.
Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister, M K Stalin, who had announced the project in the state budget just a couple of months ago, will visit Sholinganallur on September 19 to inspect a 200-acre site and give his nod for the location, sources told The Times of India. Sholinganallur is already a major destination for IT companies and located on the six-lane IT expressway is also seen as a location close to the city limits. It seems officials have narrowed their search to this location after assessing three different sites on the outskirts of the city.
“The idea of establishing a financial city is a new product by the industries department. Though we started it as a nebulous concept, it is shaping up well now. The industry response is overwhelming. They are contributing their thoughts and ideas to it. We are now going to have a wider consultation with the industry,” sources in the state government told ToI.
Although the concept covers a whole gamut of activities from backoffice work of international banks to insurance, risk assessment, private equity management and share broking, the government is in the process of identifying specific activities that will be housed in the financial city, the sources said. The industries department is gearing up to assess the requirement of select industries and based on inputs from those likely to come up there, the authorities will provide the necessary infrastructure.
Once the location is confirmed, the authorities will narrow down the list of industry verticals that will be located at the financial city. “We are in the process of identifying five or six leading players in every segment, including equity funds and financial services,” sources said.
It has been a gradual transformation for the city from having just a couple of textile mills and leather factories about 40-50 years ago to now becoming the home for almost all major industries, ranging from IT and automobile to electronics manufacture. “We are designing a new product model for the city to attract new investors and ensure that the state’s effort to create more employment,” sources said.
Recalling the state’s pioneering efforts in constructing the Tidel Park, the officials said, “the readily available infrastructure has helped many software firms start their operations here without waiting for a gestation period. Likewise, the infrastructure in the financial city will attract investors and help them to start their operations easily and in a smooth manner,” sources added.

Raji7373 September 17th, 2009, 05:54 PM CHENNAI: Discussions between the State Industries Ministry and industry representatives on plans for the Chennai financial city are gaining momentum: the location of the city is to be finalised in one month and a list of potential occupants and the nature of services are to be finalised in two months.
“The Deputy Chief Minister will visit several potential sites for the financial city and then indicate his view,” a senior official in the Ministry said, speaking to The Hindu. Group consultations with a number of financial service companies are under way, he added.
Outlining the next steps, he said, “What we would like to do is to identify maybe ten possible services we could offer and of those we can decide on two or three to offer at first. And for those two or three, we would try to identify a list of ten or twenty companies that we would like to target.” This would be followed by presentations to these target companies on the services that the financial city would offer.
The ongoing discussions are also looking into the question of what incentives the occupants of the city should be offered. Highlighting capital investment incentives and tax sops given in the manufacturing sector, the Ministry official said: “For the financial city we need to understand what incentives would excite them. There is no point in saying, ‘We will give you this’ if that does not change his decision and we still end up giving the incentive.” To avoid this situation, a brief survey would be undertaken to ask prospective occupants: “What are the five things which you think are most important?”
Foreign players coming in
Discussions are also focussed on the process of identifying the list of potential occupants.
The plan to offer the services of the financial city to foreign players could be traced back to the banking roadmap that the RBI had earlier given. According to the roadmap, foreign banks could grow organically in India by opening new branches.
In this context, there is an opportunity. “We need to determine which banks have aggressively tried to get branch licences – that shows their intentions. Also, some of those who have already started some kind of office presence in India, we could approach them as that could be one list,” the official said. The same would apply to insurance companies that have struck agreements with local players.
The initiative is being developed in coordination with the Confederation of Indian Industry, the official confirmed. “We believe that in Tamil Nadu we have very good responsible and responsive industry and we can work in tandem,” he said.
Outlining the CII’s role, he explained that they are also coming out with ideas and suggestions and are in touch with other financial centres. The immediate steps, however, are concerned with defining the “product” more clearly.
“What we are very clear on is that our approach would not be to announce something very big, very huge, to dazzle,” the official said. The aim would be to forge a strong partnership with the private sector and try and take local players along, including Tamil Nadu-based organisations and then, moving forward, organisations in other parts of the country.

think_different September 18th, 2009, 12:09 AM Chennai-based Pondy Oxide & Chemicals Limited is planning to set up an export-oriented unit near here to support its total business target of Rs 500 crore by 2011-12.
Ashish Bansal, who was inducted as director at the annual general meeting here on Thursday, said the company was planning to foray into new countries like Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Bangladesh to increase the export business. Its current export order size is about $2.5 million to be executed in the next two months.
The proposed unit would mainly cater to these new and current export markets. The investment in the project would be Rs 40 crore, which will be funded through debt and internal accruals.
The company has units in and around Chennai and one in Puducherry with a total capacity of 28,800 tonnes per annum, which would be increased to 60,000 tonnes by 2010-11, Anil Kumar Bansal, managing director, Pondy Oxides & Chemicals, told Business Standard.
Pondy Oxide registered a turnover of Rs 70 crore last year. It has set a target of Rs 125 crore in 2009-10 and Rs 500 crore by 2011-12. The company, which is into metals, metallic oxides and plastic additives, is planning to manufacture aluminum and value-added products.
Ashish Bansal said there would be uncertainties in 2009-10. “It is still unclear when the economic crisis will hit the bottom and whether the stimulus plan will push up the growth of global economy,” he added.

Arul Murugan September 18th, 2009, 02:33 AM More foot overbridges at Adyar & Triplicane
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: Mayor M Subramanian on Thursday launched the construction of a lift-cumfoot overbridge (FOB) at Taluk office Road in Saidapet.
The Rs 89-lakh FOB, scheduled for completion in four months, will be 30.5m long and 3.5m wide. The FOB at Saidapet is the second such project taken up by the Chennai Corporation in recent years. According to Subramanian, there were plans to have similar projects — one on Durgabai Deshmukh Road in Adyar and another two on Wallajah Road in Triplicane. “We want the facilities to be under optimum usage. If the projects are successful, we may provide lifts to the existing FOBs on Peters Road and Haddows Road,” he added.
The lift can accommodate between 12 and 15 members at a time. It has been designed in such a way that in case of a power failure, it goes to the nearest exit/entry point automatically. Initially, the civic staff will be deployed to man the lift, so as to make it comfortable for the first-timers.
The decision to set up the FOB at Saidapet followed several
representations from locals and the police. “The Taluk Office Road is a one-way stretch that witnesses heavy vehicular movement all. Also, there are a number of visitors to the magistrate court and taluk office daily,” a senior corporation official said.
The corporation had provided a pedestrian crossing near the Taluk Office but many often resorted to jaywalking to move to cross the main road. This often leads to accidents, at times fatal. “The FOB will certainly help elderly citizens, who are often at risk while crossing the road. Also lifts will help them move comfortably,” said Surya Prakash of Sri Nagar colony. The civic body is set to inaugurate the FOB with a lift on Nungambakkam High Road in a fortnight. About 600 pedestrians were injured and another 130 died on city roads between January and June this year.

I personally think that lift is a bad idea..it could have been done away with...tell me do u think our people have patience to wait for the lift when it has taken people to the second tier? our guys will prefer to cross the road (we are adventure lovers, aren't we)...elevators would have been better...
shanware September 18th, 2009, 06:00 AM Lift and elevator mean the same thing. You guys probably mean escalator. While an escalator would have surely been nice, I would rather have this than nothing at all. It is atleast useful to the people with handicaps. Our cities need to be more responsive to the needs of the handicapped in public places. Dont you think ?

Let them install the elevators for now... Mabbe at a later stage they'll install escalators too..

One of the flops coming our way. Elevators make sense only for extremely lazy and old people or if one has to climb about a km to reach the footbridge. Escalators would have been better.
bonoslack7 September 18th, 2009, 08:24 AM http://www.deccanherald.com/content/25905/coventry-university-open-office-chennai.html
Coventry University is the latest British university to expand its global network by launching an office in Chennai on September 24.
The formal opening on the day will be followed by a dinner hosted by the university's Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) David Pilsbury at the Taj Connemara Hotel in Chennai.
The move reflects the rapid growth in Coventry University's relationships with India, and is also the fourth office that it has opened in areas of strategic importance to support its development as a global institution.
The Coventry University office in Chennai will support activities across India, offer enhanced support for students and forge better relationships with in-country partners.
Dr Pilsbury said: "The office will support students, parents and others interested in the educational opportunities in Coventry, and also corporate, educational and research partnerships in India."
Having a permanent presence in India would also enable the university to offer Indian students work experience and employment opportunities to prepare them for the global world of work.
During 2008-09, the university worked with more than 8,000 companies including Indian firms such as car giant Tata Motors which owns Midland-based Jaguar Land Rover.
Dr Pilsbury said that at a time when the world economy was coming out of recession, such experiences would position Coventry graduates favourably in the marketplace and also give the India office a distinctive presence.

Kewl and Shanware...Sorry...I too meant escalators (and not elevators as written in my last post)...elevators/lifts will be a flop..i dono why they are spending the money on lifts..can we represent to them before they commit this money and suggest installing escalators, if not today, but surely at a later date.

I ve seen many times they losing balance... numerous times i mean.. Egmore Rly stn etc. Just see it for urself.. I am so happy that lifts are used...

Exactly..The FOB is not some multi storyed building that one has to wait for the elevator for long. Think about handicapped people. How can a wheel chair person use a escalator..
die4chennai September 18th, 2009, 06:29 PM ^^ Also the wait time will be much lesser than the amount of time they have to wait to cross the road without FOB... This will not be like Saravana stores Lifts where u have to wait for 5 min. Also Maintenance is costlier for escalators than elevators

Sivamani Muru September 19th, 2009, 05:46 AM Make Chennai as the most wired metro. By the year 2015, more than 4 billion people will be connected by broad band services. To date, 95% of the households in South Korea have broad band connections and the second place goes to Singapore at 88% and the U.S only secures the 20th place.
The advantage of having the broad band network is that you are connected anywhere and everywhere with anyone whether you are out on the road, on a train or on the other widely separated or remote locations. The end to end broad band technologies such as GPON, XDSL, HSPA, WIMAX and LTE are dealing with the complexity of the current network system to give better edge to the end users. Such forms of connectivity and communication network must find its way to every home in Chennai. If the Indian government's plan to make and sell laptops at everyone's affordable price materialises, it will surely bring about a boom in India's knowledge industry and change the way we communicate with one another.
Chennai should adopt to South Korean model where all city contracts are put out to bid online. Since all information is disclosed real time on thr internet, influence peddling over the bargaining of government permits becomes impossible. Thus greater transparency is achieved and corruption is largely reduced.
Tables at major reataurants in Chennai can use wireless devices to signal a waiter or click on to your own orders from their digital menu without the need to flag down a waiter. Over 10 wi-fi hot spots can be created in chennai providing free internet access whereby the public can check things like air quality, weather forecasts, shopping centres offering sales in chennai, and about the major cultural and recreational events taking place in Chennai. All major bus stops in Chennai should be connected by LED, whereby passengers will have all details regarding the present location of the bus they are waiting for and how long will it take to get to the stop where he or she is waiting and so forth. Chennai too can create U-SAFETY ZONE for Children, a program that uses security cameras, a geographic information platform and parents' cell phone numbers. The participating families equip their kids with a U-tag embedded with a computer chip which allows a child to be tracked at all times. If the child leaves the school it triggers a signal and sends message of their children's new location to their parents' cell phone. This ensures safety of their children. All apartment complexes in Chennai should incorporate home network and ubiquitous life features. which means all electronic and electric devices in your home can be controlled from a central keypad or by your cell phone. You can operate your rice cooker while driving home from work or switch on your porch light of your home while you are out of town and you can get informations about the break ins of your home while you are overseas so that you can alert your local police. Though it sounds good, the technology should not dominate our lives so much. I want the technology for my work not for my home.
To quote an example, how many of phone numbers do you remember now , compare the one with when you did not have cell phone.

I agree with you, 70% of the elderly people have fear of being moved on an escalator which has a speed different from their own physical movement. This is also coupled with the fear for depth. Even developed countries like Canada, we have both escalator and elevators for all public buildings. Escalator for all people at large and elevators for the elderly and the wheel chair bound users.
Escalator can continously transport people and elevators has weight capacity that limits the number of people who can travel at one time and you have to wait for your turn if it fully loaded. Both the escalator and elevator is a must. It has different users although the goal is the same.

Technologies can help, imagine the good old days where you got to wait all day at home or office for a call on a fixed line. Now we are able to go where we want without missing a important call.

The Tamil Nadu government's proposed Financial City, aimed at wooing private financial players, is expected to come up on 180-acres at suburban Sholinganallur and Perumbakkam and would initially attract companies involved in banking and insurance accounting operations, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said today.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing works on the identified land, he said the Financial City would be equipped with "world-class infrastructure" and also have Property Management companies, besides others.
The government would implement the project in different phases, based on the feasibility report, he said.
The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has been appointed the coordinating agency, which has appointed KPMG as the consultant, an official press release said, adding that a Core Advisory Team has been appointed to prepare the blueprint for the project.
Stalin, who holds the Industries portfolio, had announced setting up the Financial City in the state Assembly in July this year, saying that it aimed at wooing banks, insurance companies, mutual fund companies and stock brokers.
