Pacnet launches international gateway

Plans $150 m investment in the next two to three years

Pacnet on Wednesday announced the launch of its international gateway in Chennai, enabling the delivery of its full suite of robust, high-speed international connectivity solutions to meet India's growing demand for bandwidth. The global telecom service provider also plans to invest up to $150 million in the next two to three years to set up a data centre in India.

“The launch of our international gateway is part of our plan to build our local presence and support India's growth through the delivery of enhanced international connectivity and hosting solutions across the country,” Pacnet Chief Executive Officer Bill Barney told journalists here.

The new international gateway, for which Pacnet has tied up with Bharti Airtel that connects to the U.S., would enable businesses in India with access to high-speed international broadband connectivity and a full suite of advanced communication solutions, he added. Pacnet, through its joint venture Pacific Internet India, currently operates points of presence (PoPs) in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.

Stating that Pacnet has already invested around $150 million so far in various operations in India, Mr. Barney said: “We are looking at setting up a data centre in the region in the next two years. This would entail an investment of up to $50 million…we are exploring cities like Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore for setting up the centre”. In January 2010, Pacnet India obtained its National Long Distance (NLD) and International Long Distance (ILD) licences from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and has also obtained full security clearance from DoT. This complements its Internet Service Provider (ISP) Class A licence, which allows Pacnet India to offer a full suite of Internet connectivity solutions, as well as a range of managed and hosted services in India.

GVK, GMR projects face scrutiny by Jayalalithaa

With the new AIADMK government, headed by J Jayalalithaa, taking charge in Tamil Nadu, some industrial projects cleared by the previous DMK regime are likely to come under the scanner, according to a senior official in the state’s industry department.

At least four of these are SEZs, two in manufacturing and two in IT/ITES. All four are to come up on land in the acquisition of which the state government’s intervention was invoked or land owned by it.

The GVK group had entered into a MoU with state-owned Tidco for setting up a multi-product SEZ on 2,500 acres in Perambalur district. Likewise, the GMR gro*up also had an MoU to establish a multi-product SEZ on 2,500 acres near Hosur.

The official, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Financial Chronicle that for both the GVK and GMR projects, the state government had issued an “administration san*ction”, which had an implicit intention of the government to acquire land, if need be.

The government did not actually directly acquire the land. “But the ‘sanction’ would have enabled the groups to negotiate with landowners to acquire land at low prices under a threat of possible acquisition by the government,” the official said.

Both the previous government of DMK and before it the AIADMK government relentlessly pursued industrialisation of the state, which has not seen anything like the protests in Singur (West Bengal) and Greater Noida.

During her election campaign in Perambalur district, Jayalalithaa had raised the issue of forcible land acquisition from the poor at low rates, which was in turn sold to industrial houses at higher rates.

She had warned that, if voted to power, she would take action. During her campaign in Madurai district, she had also spoken of real estate developers forcibly acquiring and converting farmland into housing plots. She had threatened to reverse that and revive agricultural activities. GVK had acquired 2,900 acres directly in Perambalur district for Rs 120 crore, said the official. On other hand, despite administration sanction, GMR could not mop up much because of high prices, he said.

Then, about six months ago, GMR informed Tidco that it had acquired 600 acres and asked for 1,300 acres of government land for the project, the official said.

“The problem is both projects remain non-starters and the Centre’s deadline for an SEZ to become operational by December 2012 is just about 18 months away. Questions are bound to be asked now, specially because land prices in the areas have more than doubled in the meantime,” the official said.

In other cases, about 25 acres of government land was awarded through global tenders to each of

two IT SEZs of DLF and Tata Realty. These are at Taramani in Chennai.

With the 2G scam inquiry on, the Tata Realty project may attract the new government’s attention, but the fact is that the land was allocated through a transparent process. In the DLF project, even though the auditor-general questioned the rates at which land was awarded, the company’s bid was much higher than the government’s ‘guideline value’.

DLF had paid Rs 730 crore for the land but its project has not progressed at all after the global recession of 2008.

The bio-methanation plant powers up again

CHENNAI: The Rs 5.50-crore bio-methanation plant is all set to generate power within a week from the solid waste of Koyambedu market, thus reducing the greenhouse gases coming from organic waste at the sprawling perishables market, according to sources in the Market Management Committee.
The plant, which hit a roadblock in 2008, due to non-availability of spares for the machine that was to convert the waste into electricity, will go on stream after the spares were imported from Germany recently.
“Hyderabad-based Ramky Group, which took over the plant after signing an agreement with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority under a Public Private Partnership mode, will produce power once the grid is synchronised with that of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which will take about a week’s time,” said MMC sources.
The company has spent more than Rs 1 crore for importing the spare parts from Germany and the plant is expected to produce nearly 3,000 units of power per day, the sources added.
“Currently, we are awaiting a nod from the TTNEB before generating power,” sources told City Express.
Earlier, the plant was operational but it could not generate electricity. “The plant was operational only for namesake. Gas was produced but it was burnt without any use,” sources at Ramky Enviro Engineers said.
Inaugurated by the AIADMK regime in 2005, the bio-methanation plant was unable to produce power from solid waste for nearly two years due to a technical snag in the turbine. Till 2008, not even 900 units of power could be generated, sources said. Adding further to its miseries, a contractor engaged to run the plant refused to renew his term as he thought that the project was not viable. It was in 2009 that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority signed a deal with the Ramky Group to revive the project under a new 12-year agreement.
Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited would remove 150 to 180 metric tonnes of garbage per day from around 3, 500 shops in the market and generate at least 2,500 units of power per day. The biogas generated would be used as fuel in gas engines and the excess power generated would be exported to the TNEB grid.
As per the agreement, Ramky was to sell the power at Rs 3.75 per unit. But sources said they would now be selling the power at the existing market tariff, which was about Rs 6 per unit, and it was being worked out.
TNEB chairperson CP Singh told City Express that the CMDA on May 5 had sought the grid connection and synchronisation of the plant. “Everything is ready now. Ramky has to produce an electrical safety certificate issued by the Chief Electrical Inspector to government,” he added.

Chennai: Cryolor Asia Pacific, a wholly owned subsidiary of France-based Cryolor SA, is all set to inaugurate it's new manufacturing facility at Melmaruvathur, near Chennai. This is the company's first manufacturing unit outside France.

The company has invested Rs.45 crore in the manufacturing facility, which has a capacity to make around 300 gas containers, with capacities of 10,000 to 60,000 litres, on a single shift basis. It currently employs 70 people.
The company has set a target of achieving a Rs.60 crore revenue by 2015. The gas containers manufactured would have 60 per cent localised content.

Cryolor Asia Pacific will export nearly half of the production at the new facility.

The company plans to invest an additional Rs 70 crore in two phases in the next two to three years to expand its facility to manufacture bigger tankers and very large containers.

The gas containers are sold at Rs 15 to 20 lakh a unit depending upon the size.

The Marina Beach will also get more high mast lighting.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Chennai/article2035902.ece

With two watchtowers and at least a dozen surveillance cameras on the anvil, the Marina beach is set to come under the close watch of law-enforcing agencies. The Chennai Corporation has agreed in principle to create the security infrastructure based on a proposal sent by the Chennai Police.

The watchtowers are proposed to be erected behind the Labour statue and Gandhi statue. Police personnel equipped with wireless communication and binoculars would be deployed on the watchtowers. The Closed Circuit Television Network (CCTV) would be monitored by a special team at the Commissionerate, police sources said.

“The Elliots beach is already covered by surveillance cameras and we intend to extend the facility to the Marina beach. Adequate manpower has been deployed to avert crimes on these beaches,” Commissioner of Police J.K. Tripathy said.

The vast stretch of the Marina beach that extends from Anna Memorial to Light House will also have more of high-mast lighting and mobile patrolling with the help of All Terrain Vehicles and the Mounted Branch.

The immediate cause for the police to intensify security is the case in which a six-year-old-girl, Tamanna, who was reported missing from the beach on May 11. She was found abandoned on Thursday at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital by unidentified persons.

“Six children were reported missing on the Marina beach on May 11. But for Tamanna, the other five were traced in a couple of hours. For the first time in the history of the Anna Square police station, a girl reported missing could not be located on the same day,” a senior police official said, adding that efforts were on to establish police booths to assist the public in case of any exigency.

Besides beaches, the Chennai Police have mounted surveillance on anti-social elements in other public places including malls and bus stands.

East Coast Road emerging as a new growth corridor
http://content.magicbricks.com/east-coast-road-emerging-as-a-new-growth-corridor

East Coast Road is emerging as a new residential hub of Chennai city. The property values of ECR have crossed the mark of Rs 10,000 per sq ft and are still appreciating - making it one of the top residential localities of the city.

Join us on Twitter | Join us on LinkedIn | Join us on Facebook

Chennai saw a huge demand for luxury homes in the past six months. To fulfil the gap in this segment many developers and builders have launched high-end projects in the ECR. The stretch from Palavakkam to Mamallapuram is witness to numerous luxury projects which are targeted towards High Networth Individuals. Builders such as Landmark Constructions and NAPC are coming up with premium projects offering independent villas to the end users. Most of the projects coming up on this stretch have a carpet area of 3,000 to 5,000 sq ft and are priced between Rs 3 to 5 crore.

Landmark Constructions, is coming up with two premium villa projects at Palavakkam and at Injambakkam. The project at Palavakkam, known as ‘Grange’, is a 28-villa project with the minimum size of 5,000 sq ft, and the starting price from Rs 4.5 to 5 crore.

Another project known as ‘Reflections’ is coming up on an area of 35-acre at a distance of 2 km from Kovalam. With 170 housing units, it is one of the biggest housing projects on ECR. The project will have a spa and a hotel. NAPC, a leading road-laying company, is also constructing 11 signature villas near Muttukadu.Other medium and small Chennai-based builders are also coming up with small-villa projects priced between Rs 1 to 2 crore on and off the ECR. These projects are targeted towards the mid-end buyers.

According to Sree Kumar, city based realtor, “buyers are showing keen interest in the projects coming up on the ECR. Availability of Grade A amenities, infrastructure and connectivity has overshadowed the high price and people are buying these villas”. ECR is undergoing a transition and is all set to become one of the top residential localities of Chennai.

Birla Sun Life is set to invest Rs 250 crore in four real estate projects — three in Mumbai and one in Chennai — through its realty-focused fund. The Rs 1,100 crore real estate fund has already invested Rs 225 crore in the sector and would be making the investment within three months, according to a senior company official.

“We have clocked around 20 per cent return on our investment and hope to do the same with the new investment,” said Shashi Kumar, head, Real Estate Investment Advisory, Birla Sun Life Asset Management. “In Mumbai, the residential projects are in Western suburbs and we should conclude the deals within three months,” he told Hindustan Times

The fund is also investing in other cities apart from Mumbai in what is seen as a strategy. The fund-raised from domestic market predominantly invests in new residential segment in the country. According to the company official, the fund is also bullish on other cities like Pune, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Industry experts are wary about investment in real estate especially in Mumbai, where prices have gone up by as much as 40 per cent since 2010. This is only lower (in percentage term) than Ahmedabad, where prices have increased by over 60 per cent in the same period.

“The investment in the real estate is slow in Mumbai because there are no approvals from the government. Also a lot of ambiguity surrounds some laws like floor space index (FSI) and also how the government itself is selling land parcels at steep prices, pushing the prices up,” added Kumar

http://www.inewsone.com/2011/05/26/consolidated-construction-to-invest-rs-45-crore-in-prefab-facility/53170

With a view to increasing its presence in the residential apartment construction space, Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium Ltd (CCCL) is setting up a pre-fabrication (prefab) facility here at an outlay of Rs.45 crore, a top company official said Thursday.

‘We will be setting up the prefab facility at an outlay of around Rs.45 crore in Chennai where we have our own space. We are in the process of tying up with an American company for the technology,’ managing director S. Sivaramakrishnan told IANS.

According to him, the prefab facility will be mainly for constructing residential apartments – a sector the company is now looking at more keenly.

Yuga Homes Ltd, floated by the promoters of CCCL, promotes residential apartment projects. And according to Sivaramakrishnan, CCCL will be getting the construction contracts.

‘Apart from Yuga Homes, we will also look at other developers who are technologically inclined like prefab structures. It is not that we entirely avoided residential projects. Out of our current order book position of Rs.6,000 crore, around Rs.400 crore will comprise of residential complex construction,’ Sivaramakrishnan said.

He said CCCL will be taking equity stakes in some of the residential projects promoted by Yuga Homes.

According to him, the Rs.2,198 crore revenue CCCL’s wholly owned subsidiary Consolidated Interiors Ltd will be supplying the wooden interior parts like doors and modular kitchens for the residential apartments.

‘This year, the interiors company will touch a turnover figure of Rs.50 crore up from Rs.35 crore posted last year,’ Sivaramakrishnan said.

‘The company will be booking Rs.70 crore revenue this year from the Rs.200 crore residential project promoted by Yuga Homes. We will be booking around Rs.400 crore revenue from the Chennai airport project and Rs.70 crore from Chennai Metro Rail orders,’ he said.

What is a prefab facility??

PreCast:

Instead of casting concrete, erecting block / brick walls at sites, all the members are cast in factory under controlled condition.

Then they are transported to sites and get erected.

All the bridges you see including Metro and MRTS elevated portions are generally done by Precast.members.

PreFab:

Sometimes Prefab is used wrongly instead of Precast.

Prefab is complete fabrication of an unit say a home in factory and transporting them CKD (Knocked Down) and erecting at sites.

These are the FUTURE Building Styles

The ambitious desalination project at Nemmeli near Chennai that would augment the city’s water supply was likely to be commissioned in June next year as the project was “well on track”, a top official of a company which has bagged the project said on Friday.

Chennai-based VA TECH Wabag had secured the Rs 1,033 crore project which was formally inaugurated on February 2010.

“As far as the engineering and order for long delivery items are concerned 90 per cent of the works and 75 per cent of the civil works have been completed so far..”, VA TECH Wabag Managing Director Rajiv Mittal told reporters here.

“So far there has been no escalation of costs...We have managed to control them”, he said. Stating that they were “well on track” on the project, he said this year by October the pipe laying work into the Bay of Bengal would begin. “If the sea is not rough and with the onset of monsoon we hope we will be able to put the pipe into the sea..”, he said.

After completion of the laying of pipeline, it is likely to be commissioned by end of June 2012, he said.

Infrastructure company Larsen and Toubro is engaged in the laying of pipelines, he said.

“After commissioning of the project, we will be able to supply 100MLD of water. This would predominantly cater to the southern parts of Chennai” he said.

IOC to look for partner for Chennai LNG Terminal project

BS reported that Indian Oil Corporation would invest around INR 14,000 crore during the current fiscal and would soon look for a partner for its INR 10,000 crore LNG Terminal project near Chennai.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the augmented lube oil storage facility at Tondairpet, Mr RS Butola chairman of IOC said that the feasibility report for the proposed project would be ready in 6 months and the company would then look for a partner.

The under recovery for the industry during the fourth quarter stood at around INR 6,900 crore of which IOC’s was almost half. For diesel it is INR 16.49 and for LPG it is INR 29.69.

He said that the total subsidy burden in the current fiscal for the industry is around INR 78,000 crore, and for IOC it is INR 43,100 crore. He added that "Whatever decision the government takes on price, we should be fully compensated by way of cash support."

He didn't give the break for the proposed investments.

The corporation is planning to start exporting its brand Servo lubricants to the European market. The company exports this brand to over 19 countries at present.

He said they were planning to appoint distributors and start joint ventures in Europe. It would also automate its fuel stations. At present, the company has 19,000 retail outlets. As part of Phase I, 1600 outlets will be taken up for automation and the rest will be in 12 months.

Attracted by the prospect of living in an apartment considerably more spacious and luxurious than what they could afford in the city, many Chennaites have traded in their city homes for flats on the OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road).

More and more people are buying into projects on the section of OMR stretching from Navalur to Padur, with the Siruseri SIPCOT as its nucleus, suggesting an exodus to the southern-most parts of Chennai.

Two months ago, Mohan Bangera bought a large flat in Anantya, a project by Indus in Navalur, after disposing of the one he owned in Valmiki Nagar. His new home — still unoccupied — comes complete with plush lifestyle features: club house, pool, gym, wide landscaping punctuated with play areas and a jogging track covering the entire layout. Mohan believes the benefits are much more.

“With many projects on the stretch from Navalur to Padur reaching completion, the region should become more inviting in another seven to eight months. Then, residents can make use of amenities offered in other projects through memberships,” he says. “The region will eventually have plenty of retail stores and entertainment centres. The Coromandel Plaza in Navalur, with its multiplex, is a predictor of the future development in the region.”

R. Parthasarathy, a 59-year-old retiree who lives in an apartment at Adora — a high-end project from Akshaya Homes in Padur — says the region benefits from being proximal to two flourishing towns, Kelambakkam and Navalur. “We shop for certain items in kelambakkam, two km from Padur,” he says and adds that the need for shopping outside rarely arises. “At Adora, we have a convenience store that stocks up on essentials. When we ask for something new, the shop-keeper ensures its availability,” says Parthasarathy, who warmed up to the idea of moving here because it offered comforts, which are not otherwise easily available. “Apart from access to essentials, I like the idea that my complex has tennis, squash and badminton courts, billiards and table tennis rooms, a multi-purpose hall, a theatre, a pool, a gym and a steam room.”

As someone who lived in Anna Nagar and R.A. Puram before shifting here, Parthasarathy says his quality of life has improved by leaps and bounds. “Lack of pollution and the quiet are the big pluses here,” he says.

Gopal Ayyakutty, another retiree, who lives in a flat at nearby Kalipattur, can’t agree more. He says, “The area is a haven for retirees. Any family that does not have school-going children will be comfortable living here. There are not many schools around, but this is a temporary problem. They will eventually come along with the huge townships that are being established in the area.”

The long distance separating these suburbs from the city can be a deterrent, but it is not. Like many others relocating to the region, Mohan (who runs a golf store at the Cosmo TNGF Golf Club, Nandanam) has to travel daily to the heartland for work. While the distance may appear forbidding, the drive down OMR is not taxing, he says. As the road is expected to be improved upon, Mohan believes the drive to the city will only get easier.

Parthasarathy says the public transport on this stretch is excellent. Many of his neighbours are happy traveling to the city in MTC’s air-conditioned luxury buses that ply in big numbers between Kelambakkam and the city — and most are people who can afford travelling by car. The people who board these buses from stopping-points from Navalur to Padur illustrate an interesting point. The majority of them are from non-IT sectors. T. Chitty Babu, chairman of Akshaya Homes, tells you why: “Software professionals constitute only 25 per cent of those who have bought apartments at projects in this region.” Hugely ironical, because builders moved into the area after the Siruseri IT Park was established and were entirely focused on wooing the software crowd with the proximity-to-work card.

They found out that people don’t mind travelling a distance, if it is set in a region that promises growth, class and comfort.

With many projects on the stretch from Navalur to Padur reaching completion, the region should become more inviting in another seven to eight months.

Places off Vandalur-kelambakkam road are witnessing huge growth due to land availability and proximity to GST road and OMR. This is the area where the previous govt proposed satellite township but the plans were derailed by PMK(can we call it erstwhile?) Govt should take care of satisfying basic infrastructure needs like roads, drainage, water supply and forest conservation(a lot of reserve forest patches are there in this area) otherwise we have to face infrastructure problems in these areas in future. Wake up TN Govt.

CHENNAI: Realty sector in Chennai is growing slowly and developers want the growth to be gradual rather than the unprecedented one witnessed during the boom, according to a developer.

Launching a residential project ‘Alta Vida’ at OMR, Chennai, on Thursday, R Viswanathan, president of Yuga Homes, said the realty sector was gaining momentum and predicted a boom in OMR area, which is emerging as Chennai’s IT hub.

Interestingly, his observations come in the wake of a report by the Real Estate Intelligence Service (REIS) of Jones Lang LaSalle which states that there will be a rise in demand for office space in Chennai this year as over one million square feet of space is being absorbed in the first quarter due to increased confidence among major real estate stakeholders.

The Alta Vida project, promoted by the Consolidated Construction Consortium Ltd (CCCL), combines modern apartments with beautiful landscaping and ample open spaces.

It is located in Thaiyur, opposite SSN Engineering College on the Old Mahabalipuram Road. The company will develop approximately six lakh square feet in five acres of land, said Viswanathan.

Alta Vida is designed as a high-end residential project and will consist of 600 apartments in 1, 2 & 3 BHK options. The high-end affordable homes at Alta Vida will range between 570 sqft and 1,300 sqft.

Cricketer R Ashwin is the brand ambassador of Alta Vida, which would be built in two phases accommodating about 600 apartments in blocks of stilt + 12 floors.

Priced from Rs 15 lakh and above, the project site is located in Chennai’s IT and Software hub.

The value of Alta Vida is about Rs 200 crore for the total area of 6 lakh sqft.

The Phase-1 in Alta Vida will be completed by December 2013.

Unbelievable? who will buy this?

I have seen a tall building near Mint that resembles somewhat like this one. I don't know if this is an old news. I think the existing building is at least 14 storeys and it is located at site of old Kareem Beedi factory. The land rate in this neighborhood is actually 10000Rs per sq feet or so.

http://www.financialexpress.com/news/usbased-thin-film-solar-module-maker-may-invest-r2-255-cr-in-tn/797289/0

Chennai: A US-based thin film solar module manufacturer is exploring the possibility of setting up a facility in Tamil Nadu with an investment of $500 million (approximately R2,255 crore) in the coming months. The multi national company is looking at housing the state-of-the-art facility in about 250 acres of land.

According to government officials, a top level team from the company is expected to visit sometime early next week to initiate discussions with the state government officials including the industries secretary. The MNC would look at putting up the facility closer to Chennai because of its proximity to ports and the international airport. It is also learnt that the US company would be roping in consultants to hand hold them in the exercise.

“For MNCs, India is a favourable destination for investments. And when it comes to large FDI projects, states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are the most preferred because of the strong infrastructure set up. The US-based thin film solar module maker is likely to close in on some land near Chennai and the team is expected to visit some places during their stay next week”, officials said without divulging the name of the entity.

Officials pointed out that the company is a leader in making thin film solar modules and the fastest growing manufacturer in the world. They enable clean, renewable electricity at lower costs by providing a sustainable alternative to the conventional energy sources. The company would bring in latest advancement in solar module technology and bring down the cost of solar electricity to rates comparable with traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources, they said adding if the company decides to set up shop in Tamil Nadu, it will change the face of solar energy as the thin film solar modules of the company have the capability to generate electricity with no air emissions, no waste production, and no water use.

Germany is the top nation in use of solar power. The 5 of the german cabinet is here for intergovernmental discussions and renewable enrgy is on table.
Any deal on this TN must make use of and jump on german bandwagon. Possible tech tie up, factory investment and any possibility of financial aid/loan if products of their companies used.

250 acres - near Port - near Airport - Plenty of Sun - Tuticorin-Tirunelveli Dists will be ideal. They can spread Solar panels along NH 7A on both sides. Huge grid to evacuate power is available.

But social infrastructure is poor . Govt can think of running special flight service in the morning and evening between Chennai - Thuthukudi for those who wish to stay at Chennai for City comforts ,atleast during Project construction stage.

At,Chennai Moser Bear and Solar Signet have not utilised the land allotted to them for long ..Should be given, a deadline by Govt.

Hope something starts moving in the right direction.

why should we waste precious land in and around Chennai metropolitan for solar power plants?

IMHO these solar power plants needs to pushed to dry belt and leastly populated areas of TN. 10 solar parks planned should be distributed in region wise.. it can be following areas

1. Vellore dt
2. Thiruvanamalai-Arani belt
3. Arrakonam-Tirutani belt
4. Rayakottai-Krishnagiri belt
5. Anthiyur-Mettur belt
6. Dharapuram-Pollachi belt
7. Pudukottai-Karaikudi
8. Dindigul-Aravakurichi
9. Rural Tuticorin-east of Tirunelveli
10.Ramanathapuram-Rural Tuticorin.

I don't think any so called metropolitan infra, look, talent pool is needed for this! All those solar parks installed in developed countries are placed in desert or away from Chennnai. It is insane to allot land for these huge solar parks near the metropolitan or prominent cities.

R they alloting land around Chennai for solar parks?? I think its more like for manufacturing plants related to Solar, like Solar PV cells etc..

South TN is the best for solar parks and I think govt is lookin towards it.. The recently commissioned 5 MW solar plant near Sivaganga by Moserbaer is an example!

^^ Arul, I guess it is a manufacturing plant and not a solar park. It would make sense to cluster around existing manufacturing belt like Sriperumbudur. Would love to push it to Cheyyar if possible.

I would assume having a local manufacturer with cutting edge technology will work wonders if complimented with a suitable upcoming solar policy. This will open a great local market to this fledgling firm.

I am curious to know who this manufacturer is, as China dominates in this segment. Its amazing how the Chinese manufacturer was a visionary in seeing this ahead of the west.

not sure why an airport/port is advantageous for a solar panel plant. These are pretty thin panels and can be trucked to any nearby port or airport. keeping such a plant away from Chennai in less developed areas is a better idea.

I recently went to Valparai through the following route

Chennai - Chengalpet - Thindivanam -Vizhupuram - Perumbalur and then branching out to Thuraiyur - Musiri - Karur - Dharapuram - Udumalaipettai - Valparai

I was able to avoid most major cities or towns that one would imagine as compulsory to pass through like Coimbathore, Avinashi, Selam, Erode, Pollachi, Tirupur in one direction or in the alternate route - Tiruchi, Dindugal, Palani was avoided.

Therefore I got an opportunity to see the not so urbanized places, villages, barren forrests after i took a deviation from Perumbalur. One thing that ran in my mind was if some projects like windmill or solar power or jetropa/bio fuel were set up in those areas where a lot of porambokku lands and vaanam patha bhoomis (barren lands) with only mullu chedis everywhere. Such a precious amounts of wast land in central TN state being wasted. Call the Ambanis, Birla's, Godrej's, tata's, L&T's and what not - have them get TN non stop power supply.

The Bosch Group in India plans to invest Rs. 2,500 crore by 2013 for capacity augmentation, business diversification and research and development in the country.

The group, a leading supplier of technology and services in areas of automotive and industrial technology, consumer goods and building technology, aims to meet the growing demand in India with this investment between 2011 and 2013, company officials said on Thursday.

The investment activities include capacity augmentation, business portfolio diversification and R&D. Of this investment amount, Bosch Limited -- the flagship company of the Bosch Group in India -- would utilise Rs. 1,300 crore. As part of its investment plan, Bosch would also be setting up a new electrical drives manufacturing facility in Chennai.

This facility is expected to start production by 2012 to cater to the growing needs of the Indian market. Another significant activity by the Bosch Group in India, presently in its 125th anniversary year, pertains to software engineering and support for global 'power train electronics' development for gasoline and diesel engines, along with hybrid and electric vehicles.

The project looks into the global challenges of CO2 emission reduction in power train electronics and Bosch would employ over 800 engineers in Bangalore and Coimbatore.

A large proportion of the investment will also be used for new products for growing and unique Indian market needs. Having met Bharat Stage-3 norms with its inline pumps, further efforts are being made to upgrade these pumps for higher injection pressure to meet forthcoming emission norms, Bosch said.

For the low-priced vehicle segment, a common rail for enhanced fuel efficiency is also being worked upon. Innovative solutions for tractors are another area of work. Start-stop systems and low cost ABS for two-wheelers, which form a very significant portion of private transport in India, are some of the other near future offerings from Bosch.

Dr Bernd Bohr, Member, Board of Management - Robert Bosch GmbH and Chairman of the automotive group, said the highly encouraging performance of Bosch in India adds another highlight to the anniversary year.

"With a turnover of Rs. 9,270 crore, the Bosch Group in India has seen 36 per cent growth in 2010 over the past year. We hope to continue our growth by equipping ourselves to cater to the growing needs of the Indian market," he said.

OmShakthy plans new hotel and township projects

OmShakthy Agencies (Madras) Pvt. Ltd, the Chennai-based real estate company, is launching new residential and commercial projects in 2011 and 2012, R. Ramachanthran, Chairman & Managing Director, said. The company is eyeing a turnover of 700 crore by 2015.

The company intends to invest 500 crore in real estate projects over the next three years, mainly in flats, villas, hotels and township projects, through the SPV route.

OmShakthy is launching a township project in the suburbs of Chennai through a joint venture where the company will have 60 per cent equity stake. The project will come up on 150 acres of land and entail an investment of around 150 crore.

The company is also launching a three-star hotel in Tirunelveli. The project's estimated value is 20 crore. By 2014, the company will also be launching hotels in Madurai at a cost of around 50 crore and another hotel in Sriperumbuddur with an investment of 75 crore.

The company also plans to enter other towns in Tamil Nadu, such as Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem, Kumbokanam and Tindivanam, by 2015.

Being a pioneer and leader in the area of large-scale land acquisition, OmShakthy's ability to identify potential land parcels based on future trends has enabled it to acquire land at strategic locations and at attractive prices. Today, the company has a massive land bank of 250- 300 acres distributed across various locations, and is in the process of unlocking the value from the land. The land value is approximately 400 crore.

The company has also provided land aggregation services to Mahindra World City to set up a township along NH-5 route and would now provide 1,250 acres to MWC to execute a similar project this year.

Chennai Mono Rail gains speed

The traffic congestion in the city would soon be a thing of the past with chief minister Jayalalithaa showing keen interest in speeding up the 100-km Mono Rail project and also introduce it in Tiruchy, Madurai and Coimbatore.

Experts say that the Mono Rail will link most of Chennai and suburbs and will be a welcome addition to Metro Rail now under progress.

When completed, Chennai will have a four-tier train system comprising the old electrical multiple unit (EMU) linking Beach to Tambaram, mass rapid transit system (MRTS) from Beach to St Thomas Mount, Metro Rail between Washermanpet and airport and mono rail (routes yet to be finalised).

“The Mono Rail’s advantages include safety, quicker project execution, low noise pollution and lower cost to consumer,” said a senior government official. “But it can carry less number of passengers when compared to the metro.”

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) in its second master plan had suggested that mono rail could be operated in two routes, Dams Road-Royapettah-Mylapore-Adyar-Guindy Halda
junction and Lighthouse MRTS station-Anna flyover-Kilpauk-Perambur at a cost of `1,480 crore.

When the AIADMK government was in power in 2006 the Pallavan Tran-sport Consultancy Ser-vices had also recommended a Mono Rail project.

Saint-Gobain is also scouting for land in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for setting up of its first Solar Gas Complex at an investment of Rs 500 crore.

"We are currently talking with the two governments (Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh) for alloting us a site that will help us to manufacture crystalline silica, thin-film photovoltaic and solar mirrors at one complex itself," he said.

"Basically, for solar projects, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are preferred destinations. We are focused on setting up the facility in South," he said.

On the size of the land required he said it should be a 60-acre land that would help to manufacture all the three (crystalline silica, thin-film photovoltaic and solar mirrors) based products.

"We are looking at the facility to become 50% export oriented," he said.

Chinese are becomig pioneers in alternate energy development.

They are so well aware that the conventional fossil fuels cannot sustain their huge populations for long. So, while they are still building coal and oil based power plants, they're also making exceptional investments and progress in renewable energy.

They've also shrewdly realized that almost all of the world is going to have to swtich to renewable sources in the coming years. So, they're fast gearing up to the king of that vast market.

We, on the other hand, are still looking at everything at the subsistence level. Solar panels on roof tops, solar cookers... Yes, even the small things are good. But, with our population, energy demands, economic needs etc, we should be firing on all cylinders.

Yes, our economy as a whole is doing good. But I'm not seeing us being the best in class in any field. It is like being the jack of all trades and master of none.

Looking at the new government in our state guided mainly by egoism and political goal scoring, i'm feeling more and more cynical. Can't help it.

German electrical infra co OBO Bettermann plans Chennai unit

OBO Bettermann, Germany-based electrical support infrastructure company, is planning to invest Rs 150 crore in setting up a manufacturing facility at Oragadam, near Chennai.

Mr S. Gopa Kumar, Managing Director, OBO Bettermann India (100 per cent subsidiary of the German parent), told Business Line the investment would happen in two phases.

The company has acquired a five-acre parcel of land opposite to the Renault Nissan plant at Oragadam, he said.

The proposed facility will manufacture metal-based electrical and data cable support systems for the growing domestic and other Asian markets. OBO Bettermann is a €400-million family-run company manufacturing electrical infrastructure such as connection and fastening systems, transient and lightning protection systems, cable support and fire protection systems and cable routing and duct systems.

Globally, the company competes with brands such as Legrand and Schneider Electric in certain segments.

According to Mr Gopa Kumar, with the kind of civil infrastructure growth the country is witnessing currently, the market size for electrical and data cable support systems should be at least Rs 1,200 crore and mostly catered to by unorganised players.

“There is no properly engineered product available here at the moment, and the current requirements are met with plain sheet-metal covers fabricated by small time fabricators,” he pointed out.

OBO Bettermann set up its marketing office in India in 2008 and has since been market seeding its products through imports.

“We are now a Rs 25-crore company, with a chunk of it coming from the lightning and electrical surge protection devices segment. However, our focus will be on cable support infrastructure products market,” said Mr Gopa Kumar.

Currently, the German major has manufacturing facilities in Germany, Hungary, Brazil and Italy

In this mono/metro issue what has been forgotten is whether it will affect alstom plans for unit in chennai.

not sure if altom is into mono.

which ever is monorail company must be forced to set plans here. if bombardier refuses and says will use guj plant, it must not be selected.

29/9/2010

Canadian company Bombardier, largest train manufacturer in the world, signed yesterday its first large contract in Brazil: will supply 54 trains – or 378 cars – for the first monorail of São Paulo, Expresso Tiradentes. The cars, signaling, and electrical systems will cost R$ 1.4 billion of the R$ 2.46 billions of the contract – the remainder is civil works.

Up till now, the largest business of the Canadian company was the repair of 156 cars for Metrô de São Paulo, for R$ 238 millions, signed in 2009. With the contract, Bombardier is still behind Spanish company CAF, which signed since 2007 orders of R$ 3.6 billions for the paulista government, totaling 101 trains – or 774 cars. Bu the Canadian exceeds French company Alstom, traditional supplier of the paulista metropolitan network, who since 2007 supplied 24 trains – or 144 cars. In figures, the order sums up to approximately R$ 600 millions.

To manufacture the monorail, Bombardier shall use its 10,000-m² facilities in Hortolândia. According to Luís Ramos, communication director of the multi-national company, the Brazilian unit shall become a Bombardier monorail competence center, that is, a possible exportation platform.

The vision of the Company is that the monorail, with costs and construction time equivalent to half those of metro, is ideal for cities with great expansion rhythm. São Paulo cannot wait eight years to have a new metro line, he says.

In the country, the company also participates of the bidding for the monorail of Manaus – currently suspended – and is interested in projects being studied for Recife, Fortaleza, and Belo Horizonte. The Company also wishes to supply more for Metrô de São Paulo, with two more monorail projects under development.

Te product supplied to São Paulo will be the monorail with the highest capacity in the world – a new project for Bombardier. The capacity of the product used in Expresso Tiradentes will be 40,000 passengers/hour in each direction, being able to reach 48,000 passengers/hour. The capacity of the last monorail recently supplied by Bombardier, to Saudi Arabia is 20,000 passengers/hour.

The Bombardier consortium, consisting of Queiroz Galvão and OAS, has beaten the group created by Hitachi, Odebrecht, Camargo Corrêa, and Mitsubishi, which made an offer of R$ 2.98 billions. Two other consortiums were disqualified due to technical reasons.

http://www.financialexpress.com/news/tn-to-become-durables-industry-hub/804228/0

New Delhi: The Sriperumbudur-Oragadam belt in Tamil Nadu is set to become the final destination of consumer durables firms dislodging Maharashtra. Taking a cue from Samsung and Videocon, leading consumer durables company LG Electronics India is also looking at Tamil Nadu for acquiring 70-80 acre land to set up its third plant. LG is already operating to capacity at its two existing plants in Greater Noida and Pune and will require the land to set up its third factory within 12-18 months, company sources said.

Its rival and fellow South Korean electronics major Samsung is already sitting on an 80-acre plot in Tamil Nadu, which houses its latest manufacturing units for colour televisions, refrigerators and air-conditioners. The home-grown Videocon has also completed its new 70-acre manufacturing unit near Madurai, which is waiting to be inaugurated. Experts said Tamil Nadu would be able to attract around Rs 3,000 crore of investments from the consumer durable companies alone within next 18-24 months, almost double from last year.

“The process of scouting for land has not started internally but states such as Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are ideally located for manufacturing of white goods,” Yasho V Verma, chief operating officer, LG India told FE. Even Venugopal N Dhoot, chairman, Videocon Industries, agrees. “Proximity to port, excellent road-connectivity and hassle-free land allotments are among the reasons why Tamil Nadu is being preferred by the industries. In consumer durable industry, the location is extremely crucial from costs perspective,” he said. For its part, Samsung India said that for any future requirements, the land in Tamil Nadu will be able to meet its requirements.

So far, Maharashtra and Gujarat have led the way in housing the white goods manufacturers, including Videocon, which is sitting on 1,200 acre of land between the two states. LG also has a fully operational plant near Pune and holds around 104 acre collectively between Greater Noida and Pune facilities.

According to sources, some of the leading durable and FMCG brands have approached the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu or Sipcot, inquiring about land. Sipcot is the nodal agency for allotment of land to industries. It has already attracted over two-dozen multinationals to Tamil Nadu including, Hyundai, Samsung, Videocon, Dell, Nokia, Renault-Nissan among others. “With attractive terms and single-window clearance, we welcome more industries to the state,” a senior Sipcot official told FE requesting anonymity.

Commenting on the need for land, Dhoot said the consumer durable industry, which is clocking an average growth of 20-25%, will grow at an average of 30% over the next 10 years. “To support such growths, land is an essential element,” Dhoot said.

Huawei Technologies, a telecom equipment maker from China, is planning to start operations at its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai in the next two years to cater to the domestic needs of the telecommunications market. The plant is expected to attract an investment of around $500 million.

The company has already started contract manufacture of optical infrastructure in the facility and would scale up the facility to manufacture more products in the next one or two years, said P Sanjeev, sales director, Huawei Devices, a division of Huawei Technologies.

The investment for the facility would be part of its announced $2 billion investment for capacity building in India. Last November, we announced an investment of $2 billion in India to be made over the next five years. We are yet to finalise the plans and earmark investment for each of our project, he said. Decision on the nature of capacity expansion and investment would be taken in the fourth quarter of this fiscal.

The company is also exploring options to set up a semi-knock down for fixed wireless phone (FWP) in the facility. It has around 16 offices across the country including a research and development (R&D) centre in Bangalore.

The investment of $2 billion would be infused into expansion in R&D centre, setting up of manufacturing facility, capacity building and India operations investments, setting up regional hubs for training and development of human resources and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. The investments in some of the activities has already commenced, he added.

According to a few earlier reports, Huawei had earlier promised the Tamil Nadu State government officials, led by the then deputy chief minister for the state M K Stalin, that it would invest around $500 million (around Rs 2,300 crore), on a plant in Chennai. However, company officials refused to confirm the numbers, stating it is yet to decide on the investment and related matters.

The company, which announced launch of three smart phones with the Android platform this week, also has over 50 per cent share in data download business in the country. It caters to around 3 million units of data cards used for data downloads in the country through various telecom operators, of the 5.5 million units sold in the country, said Sanjeev.

The company is planning to bring in brand visibility by co-branding the data cards with its logo in collaboration with the telecom operators, he added

The Indus Institute of Hospitality and Culinary Arts has set up its base in Chennai. The Indus Institute was formerly based out of Bengaluru. It is now located at 16 Anna Salai, Saidapet. The state-of-the-art facility spreads over 15,000 square feet space and is in close proximity to several three and five-star hotels. Mumbai-based Corporate Chef Mark Crocker will have overall responsibility of the Indus Institute. The courses offered at the Indus Institute include Certification Course in Continental Cuisine, Certification Course in Bakery & Patisserie, Certification Course in Cabin Stewarding, Certification Course in Galley Stewarding.

“Cruise-line jobs are for those who are willing to work hard, and the rewards one receives are far better than what the hotel industry offers. One who earns Rs 5,000 per month in a hotel (kitchen) in India can start at around Rs 35,000 while service staff can earn Rs one lakh per month in tips. Indians are in great demand on Carnival ships and 17 per cent of the kitchen staff here are Indians, the main reason being that Indians are fluent in English and have the necessary culinary skills and work very hard,” Captain Amarjeet Vidyarthi, Founder, The Indus Institute of Hospitality and Culinary Arts said.

Are we running a monarchism here? How can we order like that? This is not the Indian defence contract to claim that so much percentage must be indigenous.

It is a normal practice. It may be used as a way of luring investments into TN.

There should not be any scam, of course.

Yes Kannan and Arul Murugan. We can ask, request put forth a proposal which they might want to consider but we can't demand them right? If the company finds that logistics and other manufacturing costs work in their favour from Chennai in the long run then obviously they will consider the option. Remember the case of Delhi metro when the coaches for the first phases were imported Europe. With the State govt deciding to restrict the Chennai Metro to one phase we can't be too demanding I believe.

Bio-methanation unit set to generate power

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00664/23THKOYEMBEDU_664399f.jpgAwaits TANGEDCO approval to supply electricity

The bio-methanation plant at Koyambedu, which remained dysfunctional for over two years, is all set to generate power from vegetable and fruit waste collected from the wholesale market.

The plant, which is operating for the past two months, is awaiting Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation's (TANGEDCO) approval to supply electricity to the grid. The facility is currently being operated by Hyderabad-based Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, which has bagged the contract for solid waste management in the market.

According to sources at Koyambedu Market Management Committee (MMC), the Rs.5.50 crore facility, set by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, was inaugurated in 2006 and was operated by the MMC till 2008. It was put to disuse owing to machine repair.

R.Ravishankar, project head of Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited, said the plant has the capacity to convert 30 tonnes of waste per day into 2,500 units daily.

Of the nearly 150 tonnes of vegetable and fruit waste generated daily at the market, about 30 tonnes are segregated and those with seeds are avoided to prevent damage to the equipment.

The shredded waste is fed into a digester where the particles develop into gas. The gas comprises methane, carbon dioxide and traces of hydrogen sulphide. Another equipment is being installed to reduce the hydrogen sulphide, which is not necessary for power generation.

The gas is then transferred to another massive structure with a storage capacity of 550 cubic metre from where it is connected to an engine for production of electrical energy. In case of engine repair, a provision has been made to flare up the gas without causing environmental pollution, Mr.Ravishankar said.

The company has invested Rs.1 crore to revamp the facility. The selling price of the electricity produced would be Rs.5 per unit. This would be sufficient to cover the operational cost, he added.

Sources at MMC said that though 1.75 acre has been allotted for composting 50 tonnes of waste, it could not be done owing to court cases. There are also plants to recycle banana stems.

A team from Tamil Nadu Electrical Inspectorate is set to visit the facility in a few days to certify the electrical safety of the plant.

Ten Square Pvt Ltd, a city-based real estate developer, is planning four projects in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with a cost of around Rs 350 crore in next three years.

Strengthening of the bund will help prevent heavy leakage. A view of Red Hills reservoir.

Expected to enhance stability of the bund of Cholavaram, Red Hills reservoirs

The Water Resources Department will in a few months start work to enhance the stability of the bund of Cholavaram and Red Hills reservoirs, two major sources of drinking water needs of Chennai.

Officials of the WRD said the proposal, worth Rs.18.66 crore, has received the administrative sanction from the government. This is part of the Rs.19.22-crore fund sanctioned for carrying out similar improvement works in the four reservoirs that cater for Chennai – the other two being Poondi and Chembarampakkam.

The municipal administration and Water Supply Department would contribute 50 per cent of the project cost. Pointing out that a detailed report on the works to be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs.100 crore was submitted to the government a year ago, the officials said the fund was sanctioned for the first phase.

As an effort to prevent heavy leakage of water from the Red Hills reservoir, filter arrangement on the slope of the bund for nearly two km would be made. This is done to maintain a compacted earthen bund. The filter would be similar to that done for rainwater harvesting structures and as part of the process, layers of fine and coarse sand and metal would be used.

Water leakage cannot be fully avoided through earthen bund. A certain amount of seepage is therefore allowed, said an official. The filter arrangement would ensure that the leakage does not increase and affect the bund.

A wall, made of reinforced cement concrete, would be built to prevent seepage in the two weirs, which are structures that allow surplus water to flow out when the full tank level of 15.3 metre is reached at Red Hills reservoir, the official said.

Besides fencing the area of two km along the main bund to avoid encroachment, a service road would also be laid. While the reservoir is surrounded by a bund for eight km, the water spread area for the remaining distance of 10 km has not been provided with a bund to allow flood water from catchment area to flow into the reservoir.

The bund at Cholavaram reservoir would also be strengthened for a distance of three km. While damaged shutters at Poondi reservoir would be repaired under the first phase, strengthening of bund and repair of vents would be carried out at the waterbody in Chembarampakkam. The work would be completed within two years.

What is street shopping mall?

Unlike regular shopping malls which house every shop under one big building or a series of buildings (Express Avenue ) ,Street Malls usually have through fare and a Main Street and a series of streets with in the Mall with shops on either side . Most of Street Malls restaurants will have outdoor seating too . So you can essentially drive through the mall in your car enjoying the shops on either side of the streets. or just pull up your car to a shop . Tamil la sonnanum na it offers a kind of a "Kada Theru " experience ,the difference being the kadais could be Premium outlets.

Personally I like street malls better as it gives you an outdoor /open air experience .

Chennai, Jul 5 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said her government would soon bring out a 'Vision Document 2025' that would meet the expectations of the industry.

Addressing the National Council meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, she said the 'Vision Document' would contain clear-cut policies for promoting investments in infrastructure like power, ports, ship building etc, with special special emphasis on Renewable Energy, like solar power.

Exhorting the galaxy of industrialists, who have gathered at the meeting to invest in the State, she said ''Tamil Nadu will be your ideal platform to generate wealth. We believe opportunities are meant to be exploited. Prosperity is everybody’s business.'' ''The concerns are common between us.

The State has a vision, which is to generate economic activity and add to the quality of life. This can happen only if all of us convert potential into opportunities, and opportunities into prosperity,'' she added. Noting that economic development starts with the first move by the investors, Ms Jayalalithaa assured that her government would act as a catalyst in fulfilling the dreams of the investors.

''This is a State that delivers. We need active partners who can see growth both in the old and the new economy and participate in the generation and propagation of wealth,'' she added. Renewing her government's commitment to make Tamil Nadu a new growth model among Indian States, she invited all the industrialists to be active partners in realizing her vision of making Tamil Nadu 'Number One' among the Indian states in all spheres of development.

Reaffirming her Government's commitment to providing an enabling environment conducive to the growth of the corporate Sector in the State, Ms Jayalalithaa said she was aware of the many challenges faced by the industry, like the infrastructure deficits. ''We will do everything possible to help industry overcome these challenges. I am aware of the nervousness in some sections of the corporate sector, arising out of some recent unfortunate power cuts,'' she added.

She said during 2001-2006, Tamil Nadu had a comfortable power situation. ''I take this opportunity to assure you that my Government is seized of this issue and we are taking efforts on a war footing to correct the situation. Very soon, we will be able to make our State a power surplus State once again,'' she assured. Observing that the 21st century was defined by knowledge and human capital, she said it was now common place to say that the 21st Century would be the 'Knowledge Century'.

''It is not military power or economic power that will in fact determine a nation’s place in the world now in the making, but it is its ''brain power'','' she said, adding, in this setting, Tamil Nadu was ideally positioned with abundant intellectual and human resource capital and was emerging as a 'Knowledge-driven' economy in the new Millennium. Noting that Tamil Nadu has a rich capital of human resource endowments capable of meeting the needs of modern industry, the Chief Minister said abundant availability of skilled manpower at relatively lower wage costs, coupled with harmonious and peaceful industrial relations confer distinct advantages on Tamil Nadu, making it the most preferred investment destination.

Ms Jayalalithaa said Tamil Nadu was a leading State in India when it comes to the Manufacturing Sector mainly due to the steadfast existence of the automobile and component industry. ''Chennai is a promising pitch for vehicles and auto parts exports and the city produces practically everything that moves -- from bicycles to battle tanks and everything in between, including motorcycles, cars, tractors, earth-moving equipment, trucks and even rail road coaches,'' she said. She said Chennai was set to emerge as one among the top Five Global auto clusters. ''My vision is to make Chennai the world’s largest auto cluster,'' she added.

JK group looking to buy rubber plantations in South-East Asia

The JK group is looking to buy rubber plantations and forest lands in South-East Asia. The group is present in tyres (JK Tyres and Industries) and paper (through JK Paper Ltd).

“We are very serious about it,” Dr Raghupati Singhania, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of JK Tyre & Industries Ltd, told Business Line today. He said that the company was evaluating a few proposals in 2-3 countries in the region for rubber plantations. Buying forest lands, however, is still in the “preliminary stages”.

Raw material sources

Rubber prices have been soaring in the last couple of years. From a steady-state price of around Rs 99 a kg in July 2009, to over Rs 210 a kg now. Owning raw material sources would give the manufacturer supply security, he said.

It is necessary to own raw material sources, Dr Singhania stressed, noting that China, which has 883,000 hectares of land under rubber plantations, had still bought a million hectares in Laos.

JK Tyres is putting up a Rs 1,130-crore tyre plant at Kolathur near Chennai. The plant was scheduled to commence production by mid-2012, but given the shortage of tyres in the country, the company is working overtime to advance the commissioning date. Mr Singhania is hopeful that the factory will be production-ready by December.

The plant is being built to a capacity of 400,000 truck radials and 25 lakh passenger car radials.

Aviation tyres

“I would love to, but nobody will give technology,” Dr Singhania said, when asked if JK Tyres would not enter aviation tyres segment. Aircraft tyres are emerging into a huge industry, given that several Indian airlines are buying hundreds of aircraft.

Besides, there is going to be a big demand from the Air Force.

New businesses

Dr Singhania said named ‘aero and defence' as two areas the JK group would enter afresh, but declined to elaborate given the “very sensitive” nature of the plan.

The group is gearing itself to benefit from the ‘offset clause' (which mandates a foreign vendor of defence equipment to source 30 per cent of the components from India.)

Chennai, Jul 6 : France-based Michelin Tyres, world's leading automotive tyre manufacturer, will set up its manufacturing unit at Thervoy Kandigai Industrial Park in Thiruvallur district, and will roll out its first radial truck tyre in November next year.

Michelin India Tamil Nadu Tyres Private Limited Managing Director Nicolas Beaumont told reporters here as a first step, the company has launched a training centre at the facility for its employees and the community to provide soft and technical training skills to improve the employability of the villagers.

With an Rs 4000 crore investment over a seven-year period, the manufacturing facility was being set up in a 290 acre land allotted by SIPCOT. Once in operation, the plant would offer employment to 1500 local people. ''At present, we have recruited about 350 people and 67 per cent of them are undergoing training.

Michelin hosts training in its various factories overseas for a period ranging from one to three years, thus giving international exposure to its employees'', he added. Mr Beaumont said the first radial truck tyre from the facility would be rolled out in November 2012.

''Though the plant has the capacity to produce 20 lakh tyres, it will produce three lakh tyres in the first year'', he said. With this facility in India, Michelin would be better equipped to cater to the increasing needs of the Indian customers, he added.

Will provide press workers exposure to universal printing problems

South Asia's first simulated press training facility for training newspaper web offset printing personnel was launched here on Thursday.

Modelled on simulated pilot training, it provides press workers exposure to a simulated scenario, covering a range of universal printing problems.

The training programme, which is an initiative of the South Asia Committee of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), aims to facilitate real-time training of newspaper pressmen without actually involving a production environment.

Bridging the gap

Launching the facility at WAN-IFRA's Research and Material Testing Centre at Taramani, K. Balaji, Managing Director, Kasturi and Sons, said it could fill the gap in an educational system lacking in this line of skill development.

Pointing out that typically most press workers are trained on the job, Mr. Balaji said that the simulated facility would help the initiation of trainees before their entry into the profession. This would also result in substantial savings for organisations in terms of expending training resources.

Peter Herman, president, Sinapse Print, France, which has provided the Rs.50-lakh simulator, said that the training programme was currently being run on the simulator software Version 5.0. For the next ten years, WAN-IFRA would be receiving annual upgrades for the software.

Training ensemble

The simulated training ensemble comprises three monitors – console, copy desk and folder – connected to a software-loaded computer. Through a set of exercises, trainees are taken through different scenarios of production hitches and learn the art of troubleshooting.

The system also helps them choose the course of correction that will involve the lowest possible production cost.

Magdoom Mohamed, Managing Director, WAN-IFRA, South Asia; Anand Srinivasan, Research Engineer; and Thierry Mack, Trainer, Sinapse Print, also participated. Newspaper groups such as Ananda Bazaar Patrika, Deccan Herald, The Times of India, Malayala Manorama and Mathrubhumi, besides The Hindu are supporting the skills training initiative.

Tulsyan NEC mulls two plants in TN

CHENNAI: Tulsyan NEC Steel is setting up a 70-megawatt power plant at a cost of Rs 380 crore in Tiruvallur, Chennai. The company is also planning a furnace plant at Gummidipundi, Chennai at a cost of Rs 300 crore. This facility would have a production capacity of 80,000 tonnes billets per annum, 1.59 lakh tonnes blooms per annum and structural sections of 1.5 lakh tonnes per annum. "We have got environmental clearances for the Gumidipondi facility," said a company official.

Investments in both facilities would be funded by banks and through internal accruals. With infrastructure spending going up, there is demand for steel, said officials.

The steel maker already has one unit in Gummidipundi that manufactures billets and TMT (thermo mechanically treated) rods with a capacity of 3 lakh tones; and one rolling unit in Ambattur that produces TMT rods with a capacity of 48,000 tonnes per annum

The Rs 871.24 crore desalination plant in Nemelli will be completed by June 2012, and the city will get additional 100 MLD of water, Metro Water sources said Saturday.

The project, which was reviewed by the Municipal Administration and Rural Development Minister KP Munusamy on Friday, is nearly 75 per cent complete.

The project was supposed to be completed by the end of this year, but due to technical glitches, officials have extended the deadline to June 2012, sources said.

Metro water sources said that the minister has urged L&T to expedite the work of laying the pipeline, construction of underground tanks and erection of electromechanical works in the pump house at plant site.

Meanwhile, construction relating to the intake chamber, reverse osmosis, mechanical and electrical equipment is also pending.

About 265 MLD of raw water from sea will be drawn by laying 1600 mm pipes for a length of 1042 metres, and after undergoing reverse osmosis, 100 MLD desalinated water would be produced.

The scheme was planned during AIADMK regime and implemented by the DMK regime.

The plant is set up on an extent of 40.05 acres of land belonging to Alavandar Trust on East Coast Road at about 35km from Chennai city in Nemmeli and Krishnan Karanai Villages in Chengalpattu taluk in Kancheepuram district.

The land has been given on lease to Metro water for a period of 30 years. The rent is fixed at Rs 1.12 lakh per month with a provision of 15 per cent increase once in three years.

South Korean power equipment-maker Doosan will set up a power equipment manufacturing unit at Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said.

"Doosan will be setting up a power equipment manufacturing plant at Chennai," Shinde told reporters here.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's factory at Chennai is likely to manufacture boilers for thermal power projects in the country.

"It is 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from Doosan," Shinde added.

This facility would produce equipment to aid generation of around 3,000 MW every year.

A new manufacturing facility will be useful, as India is looking to scale up its power equipment manufacturing capacity.

On the capacity addition front, he said, "We would add 17,000 MW during the current financial year (2011-12). And have so far done 37,000 MW in the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12)," he added.

State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals is the country's biggest power equipment manufacturer, with the capacity for fabricating equipment with a power generation capacity of 15,000 MW per annum. This could be further scaled up to 20,000 MW per annum by March, 2012.

At present, in the private sector, a joint venture of Larsen & Toubro and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the sole player with a manufacturing facility operational at Hazira, in Gujarat.

This plant has the capacity to produce boilers and turbine generators with a capacity of 4,000 MW per annum.

Alstom and Bharat Forge have another JV company, which aims to produce turbine generators with a capacity of around 5,000 MW per annum. Their plant, which is coming up at Mundra, in Gujarat, is expected to be operational by 2012.

In addition, a JV between Toshiba and JSW is expected to be commissioned next month, which would produce turbine generators of 3,000 MW capacity every year.

A Gammon-Ansaldo JV is also setting up a manufacturing plant at Tiruchy, in Tamil Nadu, which would be operational by December, 2012. The plant would produce boilers to aid generation of 4,000 MW per annum.

Another such boiler manufacturing facility being set up by Thermax-Babcock & Wilcox to aid electricity generation of 3,000 MW is to be completed by the end of 2011.

Royal Enfield to set up 2nd plant near Chennai

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00692/12TH_ROYAL_ENFIELD_692091f.jpg

Eicher Motors on Tuesday said its two-wheeler division, Royal Enfield, will set up a new manufacturing facility at Oragadam, near Chennai, with an initial installed capacity of 1.5 lakh units per annum by March, 2013.

The proposed 50-acre facility is likely to see a total investment of up to Rs 350 crore over the next five years.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday officially allotted land for construction of the plant at the Oragadam SIPCOT Industrial Park, near Chennai.

“We have received the letter for the land from the state government. We will start construction immediately after getting the possession. We should be ready with the plant by the first quarter of 2013,” Eicher Motors Managing Director and CEO Siddhartha Lal told PTI.

He said the new facility will have an initial installed capacity of 1.5 lakh units per annum, which could be expanded later, depending upon demand.

“With addition of new capacities, we will be able to reduce the waiting periods of our bikes. It is currently about 6-8 months,” Mr. Lal said.

Following operationalisation of the new plant, Royal Enfield will shift its entire vehicle assembly line here. At present, it has another facility in the state that produces 70,000 bikes every year.

“We will completely shift vehicle production in a phased manner to the new plant. Our plan is to utilise the old plant for developing and producing engines for the bikes,” Mr. Lal said, adding that engine manufacturing capacity will also be increased to 1.5 lakh units annually from 70,000 units at present.

When asked about the investment that the company is likely to make on the second plant, he declined to share details, saying, “We will have to take approvals from the board at first before telling any number.”

“Our long-term strategy is to invest for the next five years under a mega project on the same site,” he said.

However, an official statement from the Tamil Nadu government said the company had proposed to expand operations at a cost of Rs 350 crore.

Eicher Motors decided to set up its operations in the state, considering the “infrastructure facilities and conducive (business) atmosphere,” the official statement said.

It further said the latest venture from the company will ensure 900 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

On product development, Mr. Lal said: “We are constantly working on new products. We will introduce two new products in 2012-13. There will be no new bikes in this year.”

Talking about sales of Royal Enfield, he said the company expects to sell 70,000 units in 2011-12, compared to 53,000 units last fiscal.

Addressing the CII National Council meet last week, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had said Chennai was all set to emerge as one of the top five global clusters with more automobile majors evincing interest in having their presence here.

At present, top auto companies, including German luxury car-maker BMW, Korean auto major Hyundai and U.S. auto-maker Ford, have established plants in the city and its suburbs.

Ms. Jayalalithaa had said with Chennai practically having everything that moves, from bicycles to battle tanks, tractors and even rail-road coaches, “Chennai is set to emerge as one among the Top Five global auto clusters.”

“My vision is to make the city the world’s largest auto cluster,” she had said.

IVRCL submits plan to set up 200 mld desalination plant

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/multimedia/dynamic/00693/minjur_693053f.jpg

The Hyderabad-based IVRCL, an infrastructure company, has submitted a proposal for 200 million litre a day desalination plant in North Chennai.

The study outlines the advantages of setting up the desalination plant at Minjur where the company now has a 100 mld desalination plant to produce fresh water from sea water for supply to the city.

According to company officials, the report was submitted to the State Government when IVRCL's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Sudhir Reddy, met with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, today.

The desalination plant now at Minjur set up at a cost of Rs 590 crore by Chennai Water Desalination Ltd, a joint venture of IVRCL and Befesa, a Spanish company, went on stream last July. The joint venture, which operates the facility on design-bvuild-own-operate-transfer (DBOOT) basis, has a 25-year bulk water supply agreement with Metrowater (Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board), Chennai's public sector water utility.

The unit, which is to complete one full year of operation by the month end, is functioning smoothly and to full capacity, a company official said.

The proposal has presented the advantages of the existing location for which extensive studies including environment impact analysis and soil tests for foundation have previously been carried out for the first plant.

It may be recalled that Metrowater has called for bids from consultants to carry out a feasibility study for a 200 mld desalination plant for Chennai. This would be the third desalination plant in the city.

A second desalination unit of 100 mld is coming up about 40 km to the south of Chennai at Nemili, on the East Coast Road. This Rs 1,033-crore unit funded by the Union Government is being set up by VA Tech Wabag for Metrowater. After setting up the unit Wabag will handle the seven-year operation and maintenance contract.

Motherson Sumi acquires 80% stake in German co Peguform

Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd (MSSL) plans to acquire 80 per cent stake in the €1.37-billion German auto component maker Peguform.

The proposed acquisition, approved by the MSSL board on July 13, would be done through a special purpose vehicle created for the purpose.

While MSSL Vice-Chairman, Mr V.C. Sehgal, refused to disclose the deal size — which, he said, will be made known in September-end — analysts reckon that it would be in the range of $650 million. The acquisition would also involve the Delhi-based Samvardhana Motherson Group taking a 50 per cent stake in Wethje Carbon Composite, which is part of Cross Industries AG that owns 100 per cent in Peguform.

Peguform is Germany's second largest supplier of door panels and its third largest instruments panel supplier. It is also the market leader in bumpers in Germany and cockpit assemblies in Spain.

MSSL plans to undertake the acquisition jointly with Samvardhana Motherson Finance Ltd (SMFL), which holds 36.64 per cent in the former. While MSSL will hold 51 per cent in the SPV, SMFL would own the balance 49 per cent.

The funding of the acquisition will be done completely through debt. “We have tied up with Indian banks and they will raise the monies outside India in foreign currency,” said Mr G.N. Gauba, CFO of MSSL.

Cross industries would retain 20 per cent stake in Peguform even after the acquisition goes through. MSSL is India's largest manufacturer of car rear-view mirrors and a leader in automotive wiring.

“Peguform caters to the middle and upper segment, while we are present in the lower segment. Their aesthetic offerings will only add to our product portfolio. After the acquisition, 80-85 per cent of our revenue will come from outside India,” Mr Sehgal told presspersons here on Wednesday.

Mr Sehgal projected the Samavardhana Motherson Group's revenues for the current fiscal at nearly $2.25 billion, with $10 billion being targeted by 2014-15.

Peguform's 2010 sales were at €1.37 billion and EBITDA at €66.87 million. Mr Sehgal said Peguform is expected to close this calendar year with revenue of €1.6 billion.

“The restructuring of Peguform began in the aftermath of the Lehman crises. Since 2010 we have been growing at 20 per cent annual growth rate. Our joint development experience with Bajaj motivated us to search for partners to achieve a global footprint. We always had the technology but not the resources to scale up our operations and through this acquisition we want to achieve the same besides exploring the Indian markets,” said Mr Stephen Pierrer, CEO, Cross Industries.

“Assuming revenue growth is 10 per cent, margin improves from 5-8 per cent and the deal gets done at five times enterprise value/EBITDA, the potential size of Peguform is $800 million. MSSL's cost for acquisition will be roughly $320 million,” said Mr Basudeb Banerjee, Auto Analyst, Quant Capital.

“The synergistic benefits from this deal will help MSSL improve down the line, based on increasing revenue per car,” he added.

This acquisition will lead to creation of 3,000 additional jobs in India, with new plants planned in Chennai and Tapukara in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt

MISC Bhd, world's leading shipping company, has anchored itself in this south Indian city, to tap skilled maritime staff from India, presently the world's largest seafarers supplying nation.

India supplies nearly eight per cent of seafarers for the world's maritime industry with about 100,000 Indian nationals working on international merchant vessels.

"Currently we have more than 8,000 sea-going professionals of whom approximately 25 per cent are Indian nationals, whilst the others consist of Malaysians, Filipinos and other nationalities," Capt Rajalingam Subramaniam, vice president of Fleet Management Services of MISC said in a statement.

On July 11, the shipping conglomerate opened its new office in India, others being in Mumbai and New Delhi.

"There is definitely a lot of scope for both new and experienced seafarers to grow and develop their professional selves in MISC," added Rajalingam.

The Chennai office is operated by a three-way partnership between MISC, MISC Agencies India Pte Ltd and AET Shipmanagement (India) Pte Ltd.

The third office in Chennai is expected to bolster MISC's liner business in India and also serve as maritime staff recruitment centre, added the statement.

yes we have two 18 hole golf courses in Chennai - Cosmopolitan club (Nandanam, YMCA) and Gymkhana club. But getting memberships in these clubs are too tough. I think only members are allowed to play in..

I tried to get Membership for an expat colleague in Madras boat club..ooops it was a long long procedure..like filing a case in Indian court and waiting for justice..too pissed off..I think the same for the other clubs too..

AKDR is also there. a par 3-9 holes. http://www.akdrgolfvillage.com/

Also there is a golf club outside the city - name of which I forgot.

I am glad to tell that we have bought a flat here.

And its in the final stages of completion.

One of the most affordable (around 25-30L) projects in & around chennai. However, thats why we pay the price of being located so far away from the city.

Nevertheless, not a bad deal!

Ashok Leyland-John Deere venture to see product rollout in 2 months

A construction equipment launch from the Ashok Leyland-John Deere joint venture is not too far off, considering the joint venture is currently engaged in trial runs using prototypes, according to a senior official of the company. The joint venture between the Indian commercial vehicle maker and US construction major was formed in 2008. But the project has seen a series of delays and is yet to see a rollout. However, some positive news on this front is expected in two months. “The project is on track. We have started doing trial runs using prototypes and we are getting customer feedback. Wait for two months…,” said Mr J. N. Amrolia, Director, Ashok Leyland John Deere Construction Equipment Co, without elaborating. The joint venture company is expected to manufacture backhoes and four-wheel drive loaders at its Gummidipoondi plant near Chennai.

They are talking about volume of loan they are expecting to write for their clients.

For writing $500mil MV loans all they need is 1 floor of rented office space and 30 staffs.

Hate low rises, why can't they build couple of high rise and leave large open space

Me too. When they can build upto 20 floors inside the city why can't they opt for it and leave open space for pleasing greenery around. Sensless people..

May be govt should enforce some restriction on building low rises. Approvals should be given only for builders building flats more than 12 floors with greenery of certain Sq feet around it. This Should be implemented inside the city limits - including new chennai.

Higher the floor ... higher the cost of construction ... a cost that the primary target market of this project may not be willing to pay for ... which is why some builders prefer to build many low rise buildings rather than a few high rise buildings

How abt the ground space(horizonal) required for low rises. The cost of land could be more than the higher cost of high rises isn't it?

Land price is going to be same based on FSI
forexampel if you have 20000 sq feet of land you can construct 60000 sq feet of building which could be 3000 *20 high rise building leave the remaining 17000 for open space or 5 buildings for 3000*4 occupying 15k sq feet for buildings and 5k for open space. Depending upon the road length govt will permission to both kinds of townships

but cost of construction will be high for 20 story building

satishanu
July 21st, 2011, 01:11 AM
If you fix the land size then I agree the cost is higher for high rises.

For example, the above project is coming up in 104 acres for say 1000 houses (4 floors).
If the same (1000) houses (8 floors) comes in 50 acres then cost of 50 odd acres is saved which would be significant than the cost of highrises.

manhattan style dizzy heights high rise are inevitable for offices @ commercial hubs. but, I feel its very odd living up there .... and they are power hogs ... lifts, backups, high power motors and lobbies are almost always narrow. regarding, the open land .. yes, it could be an advantage but they usually get filled up easily and rather clumsily for such as parking, and some devlopment. its rarely left open as the nature's own. even paved area is a built=up space in my opinion.

MA Eswaran

People go for higher floors where the land is scarce and costly. In this location which is very far from city and the land is available in abundance, builder would have thought no need of very high building unit

Interesting to see the reactions for S+4 or G+3 low rise townships.

The decision is purely on Market & economy.

This particular project is an Affordable Project aimed at Lower Middle Class. Most of the flats were booked in a jiffy due to the attractive pricing and very quick construction.

MSBs (> 15 M height) needs > 20 odd additional NOCs and the planning permission takes min 18 months. some times years if there are issues.

Comparatively S+4 or G+3 takes less than a few months.

The construction cost dramatically rises for MSBs - Foundation & Lifting cost a lot.

Unless the market demands, Builders will do more Low rises than High Rises. In one of the townships, floors upto 4 were booked in a jiffy but the higher floors took time.

Only in Reputed companies developments like Olympia, Hiranandhani, DLF, TVH, higher floors were lapped up by paying premium value - esp by NRIs, IT guys, Mumbaikars (investors). (Client Profile actually decides this)

As per SSC philosophy, each project is important. So separate thread for each big project is advisable.

But we may not get enough info initially till the buildings come up to certain level. So we may have it in Project thread till then. The secret is to visit the Architect's or the Developer's website for the latest.

Certain forumers get links from other sources (probably they or their relatives / friends have booked a flat there or like) than the news published by media. They can sustain these threads.

Actually I am personally upset that generally Chennai Forumers are not very active in this.

Mumbai flat rented for Rs 1.65 lakhs a month

MUMBAI
An apartment in Worli, measuring approximately 1,100 square feet, was leased by a major corporation for a monthly rental of Rs 165,000. The area is one of the most-preferred residential locations for rental units due to the fact that it is located centrally, giving access to established and new business districts and is also well endowed with social and civic infrastructure.

Given the advantages and rising demand from corporate and end-users for rental accommodation, rental values in this location have seen a rise of approximately 4% over the last year and is expected to remain stable with an upward bias. Given the fact that residential rental market is sensitive to rapid price changes, we expect the market to hold steady.

CHENNAI
A residential unit on East Coast Road was leased by an individual for a monthly rental of Rs 1,10,000. Spread over an area of Rs 4,500 square feet, the house is fully furnished and provides all necessary white goods and fixtures and furniture. The Chennai market has seen a rise in rental property demand owing to a large influx of professionals from out of the city.

As a result, the rental markets have been seeing rapid rise in values, ranging from 7% to 22%, over a single quarter. East Coast Road is especially in spotlight as it gives its residences unabated access to the sea coast and the serenity of living away from the centre of the city, apart from being close to newer office locations.

HYDERABAD

A residential unit measuring approximately 1,770 square feet was sold for a total value of Rs 51,45,000. Part of a villa-style gated development, the house is located in Secunderabad and provides standard amenities such as clubhouse, gymnasium, swimming pool, banquet hall, 24X7 security, etc. The location was traditionally seen as peripheral to the main city of Hyderabad, but in recent times, due to its ability to provide large residential plots for development, the area has started to gain prominence.

The area is expected to see rapid development in the next few years, since the demand from end-users is increasing in Hyderabad.

The capital values of real estate in the city as a whole has increased by an average of 2-5% over the last quarter.

Anna University has signed an MoU with Microsoft on Friday to launch the I-Spark Centre of Excellence programme at its campus. Under this I-Spark programme, students will have access to the latest software and developer tools, which will provide them the much needed headstart for innovation and entrepreneurship.

About four lakh-odd students of Anna University and its affiliate colleges will benefit from this programme.

S Somasegar, senior Vice President, Developer Division of Microsoft Corporation, said, “It is exciting to see how educational institutions across India drive innovation among students. I clearly see synergies between institutes like Anna University and Microsoft, where innovation is regarded as the most powerful driving force for everything we do.”

He added, “These are exciting times for India and I-Spark program can play a pivotal role in enhancing the skills of students, in empowering them to use the latest software and developer tools and transform their ideas into reality.”

Somasegar was positive that this I-Spark programme of Microsoft would provide an ‘innovation platform’, which acts as hub for collaboration among colleges, universities, government, quasi government bodies and industry partners. This inclusive platform is also focused to facilitate growth of the local software economy in the country. Somasegar, an alumna of Anna University, called upon the students to dream big and pursue their passion no matter what others say.

Talking about the next big thing in IT, he spoke about cloud computing and how it is going to transform the industry. He also mentioned that from this year on, Microsoft Corp will be hiring students directly from India’s premium colleges to work at its campus in Redmond and that Anna University would be one of the first universities where Microsoft would look to hire for its R&D facilities.

Speaking on the occasion, P Manar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor of Anna University, said, “In this highly competitive environment, it is important for students to think out of the box and leverage technology optimally to develop path breaking solutions. I am sure Microsoft’s I-Spark program is one such platform that will provide opportunities for students to encourage them to learn, experiment and innovate.”

Tender for hiring the vehicles is likely to be finalised shortly

The Chennai Corporation is planning to hire at least 20 more tipper lorries and 12 haulage tipper trucks as part of its efforts to tackle possible emergencies in four zones covered by Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF).

A recent Government Order, issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, permitted the Corporation Commissioner to terminate the contract with the NMF on the basis of Madras High Court's order of January 2011.

Experienced contractors

Transport contractors with experience in garbage collection would be entrusted with the task of moving garbage that are not cleared by the NMF in the zones of Pulianthope, Triplicane, Kodambakkam and Adyar during the period.

Large-capacity haulage tipper trucks to clear garbage from transfer station to dump sites would be hired for Basin Bridge, Kilpauk, Nungambakkam and Saidapet zones.

The tender for hiring the vehicles is likely to be finalised shortly.

Transferring garbage

A portion of garbage from the Adyar zone collected by the civic body is being taken to the transfer station in Saidapet now.

The transfer station in Kilpauk zone is being used by the civic body for clearing garbage from the Ice House, Pulianthope and Kodambakkam zones.

The move to hire private vehicles is expected to help improve garbage collection for two months before the next local government assumes office. The civic body has 32 haulage trucks for collection of garbage and 78 lorries for removal of debris and garden garbage. A total of 105 big compactors, 110 small compactors, 30 Bobcat skid steer loaders and 10 front end loaders are also being put to use by the civic body.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is slowly becoming an industrial hub for Japan with companies from the Asian country growing four-fold in the state during the last five years and plans are underway to set up an industrial township in Mahabalipuram.
The Omega project is to come up in 1,450 acres of land in Mahabalipuram, which is jointly promoted by Ascendas and Japanese investors. “Currently, 70 per cent of the land is acquired and we will be finalising the agreement soon,” said a Japanese official.

Mahabs to get Japanese township

CHENNAI: Japanese engineering services company JGC Corporation, Mizuho Bank and Ascendas, a business space developer, have teamed up to develop a township near Mahabalipuram spread over 1,450 acres targeted at Japanese companies. The Omega project will comprise of an industrial zone, residential units, a golf course, hospital and school.

"We have acquired around 70% of the land," said Arimichi Saikawa, a manager of JGC Corporation. He, however, refused to divulge the project cost. Omega is expected to be completed within the next 10 years with the first phase being completed in five years.

"We are doing a feasibility study at the moment and have visited similar integrated business cities like Sri City," Saikawa said. The project envisages commercial spaces for offices as well as industrial areas for manufacturers. Nearly 60% of the space is expected to be occupied by Japanese concerns. "But that is subject to allocation by the Tamil Nadu government," Saikawa said.

Japan is also keen to participate in the Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor. Last year, governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were evaluating possibilities of reducing distance between the two cities to about 250km from the present 350km with plans to promote this route as an industrial hub.

"We will be initiating talks with the new government in Tamil Nadu," said Yuki Takishima, principal deputy director, financial cooperation division, METI (ministry of economy, trade and industry), Japan.

He says a lot of Japanese auto and auto component majors are keen to set up shop in India. "These are mostly SME units based out of Yokohama. Many of them are operating in China, Thailand and Malaysia and they are now keen to expand their presence in India."

Also, of the total Japanese business base in India, 31% is in south India. This region also accounts for over 50% of India's automobile exports and hence the Japanese are stressing on better infrastructure linkages for the regional production network spanning India and its East Asian neighbours.

All old news. Many months ago, (middle of 2010) same news were flashed in the Media. There was news that 1500 acres will be set apart for this Township/Park by the previous Govt.(Govt. owned land) earlier earmarked for a Sports City.

Ascendas operate such parks in Far East and it is a welcome surprise that they will learn something from Sricity.

5-10 years plans... let us forget for the time being, till 'Bhoomi Pooja '!!

Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation CMD Mohan Pyare (right), inspects the new sewage treatment plant at Ambattur industrial estate, on Saturday. CAAIIUC chairman Dilip Kumbhat is in the picture.

To be used for treating discharge by industrial units

A two-MLD sewage treatment plant was commissioned at Ambattur Industrial Estate by Chennai Auto Ancillary Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Company (CAAIIUC) on Saturday.

Addressing a gathering of entrepreneurs at the function, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation Mohan Pyare said the CAAIIUC's request for land for setting up a common effluent treatment plant would be considered after consultation with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

The company, a special purpose vehicle for infrastructure development at three industrial estates – Thirumazhisai and Thirumudivakkam being the other two – plans to set up the CETP near the sewage treatment plant.

Unit holders in the Ambattur industrial estate stressed the need for curbing the misuse of stormwater drain for discharge of effluents and sewage.

The effluents generated by over 600 industrial units in Ambattur can be treated if the CETP is commissioned, said V.Raju, Director of CAAIIUC.

The new facility, on Aavin Dairy Road, commissioned on Saturday would be used for treating sewage discharged from nearly 750 units located in the north phase of the industrial estate, said Dilip Kumbhat, Chairman of CAAIIUC.

A model road near Patravakkam Railway Station, modern street lighting and public convenience, set up as part of the phased development of infrastructure at three industrial estates by CAAIIUC, were also inaugurated.

The road is being used by over 50,000 employees of the industrial estate. CAAIIUC has developed this as a model road for future projects in other parts of Ambattur, Thirumazhisai and Thirumudivakkam.

The industrial estates house a number of large, medium and small enterprises that manufacture automobile components, garments and heavy engineering products and provide IT export services.

The work on construction of overhead tanks and water pumping station as part of the water supply scheme in Ambattur is set to be completed in November.

Chennai Metrowater Managing Director K.Gopal recently inspected the ongoing projects to provide water supply and drainage facilities to areas under Ambattur Municipality. He asked the officials to expedite the works and complete them on schedule.

Work is under way to lay drinking water pipeline covering a distance of 489 km. Nearly 75,000 water connections in Padi, Anna Nagar Western Extension, Oragadam and Menambedu would be provided.

In a press release, Mr.Gopal said besides pipeline laying work, 22 overhead tanks would be built at a cost of Rs.268 crore. A total of 26 sewage pumping stations would be constructed as part of the Rs.220.97 crore worth sewerage project. Construction of sewage pumping station on Bharathi Salai at West J.J.Nagar would be finished by July next year.

Residents wanted water connections to be provided soon during the review at Sai Garden and TVS colony.

Royapuram shopping complex to open soon

After nearly a year since the three shopping complexes for hawkers were inaugurated, the Chennai Corporation is set to open one of the complexes in Royapuram in a few days.

While the initiative seeks to ease congestion on roads, street vendors and hawkers in the city say questions pertaining to some of their demands, including protection of their livelihood, remain.

B. Karunanidhi, general secretary of Federation of Small Traders Associations, said: “We were given identity cards by the civic body. But, we have not been able to move to the complex due to ongoing case at the Supreme Court pertaining to occupancy. The livelihood of the vendors has been severely affected as temporary space has not been provided.

We want the civic body to consider giving hawking site beneath the Usman Road flyover.”

Vendors of Usman Road said they plan to start their business along the road on Tuesday in the absence of an alternative site for hawking. As many as 131 hawkers were removed from Usman Road two months ago citing traffic hindrance, he added.

While the complex in Palavoyal Street, Ayanavaram with 332 shops is awaiting further directions from the hawking committee headed by justice A.Ramamurthy regarding when it can become functional, the one at Royapuram is yet to be occupied as the problem of a few vendors applying using fake names has to be settled.

S.Marimuthu, a vendor at Ayanavaram, said “We are waiting for ID cards to move into the complex. We want the Corporation to provide arrangements for constructing a wall to separate shops. Some vendors want space demarcated to be changed.”

The hawkers at Royapuram want facilities to ensure safety of their belongings once the space is allotted for the remaining 16 traders. K.Balaraman, secretary of M.C.Road footpath traders association, said “We gave petitions to the committee to allot space for another family member as they are also in the business for a decade in the same place.

Setting up of hawking zones in some places continues to face hurdles. The traders of Luz Road are refusing to shift to the earmarked space at Kapali Thottam citing difficulties in trading near the canal. The space at Shenoy Nagar also remains unoccupied due to objections from hawkers.

Similarly, the Corporation is scouting for a different location to rehabilitate hawkers from Lattice Bridge Road and Bhavani Medai in Thiruvanmiyur following objection from residents of Indira Nagar. Officials of the Corporation said that of the 101 shops constructed at Vinayagampettai, 14 are yet to be occupied due to problems related to ownership.

Many street vendors took to streets on Monday demanding protection of their livelihood and against forced displacement from hawking areas. Street Vendors Federation State coordinator V.Mageshvaran said that State governments must appreciate the spirit of various court judgements that have asked municipal authorities to regulate instead of evicting street vendors. “While violations by multi-storeyed buildings of commercial establishments are overlooked, the small petty shop on the road is targeted. Though the claim is that we encroach on public space, the crucial role of the mobile food stall or petty shop is hardly appreciated.”

He said that the National Policy for Urban Street vendors 2009 is yet to be implemented in Tamil Nadu.

“The government should have set up a Vending Committee. Enumeration of the number of street vendors in the city, allocation of space and issuing of identity cards must have followed. None of this has been done,” he added.

Pointing to the considerable progress that other States have made, he said: “In Madhya Pradesh, over 90,000 street vendors have been issued identity cards by municipal authorities. A model hawker complex has been set up in Orissa with a six metre pedestrian footpath in front of every shop.”

Experts say that street vendors make major contributions to the economy, both as a source of livelihood for the poor and an efficient form of inexpensive retail.

Raj Cherubal of Chennai City Connect, an NGO that has worked on issues relating to livelihood security of street vendors, said that a formal system with well defined stalls and walking space is essential. “If a road is badly designed, then everyone who does not fit in is seen as a nuisance. Street vending is a part of our culture and urban fabric. Surveys show that many vendors are also willing to pay market rates to use stall space. What we need is ward level urban planning and a democratic distribution of public space.”

Officials of the Corporation said a majority of the 3,848 hawkers identified have been resettled. Those on Anna Salai have started their business on Link Road from Monday. While the complexes in Royapuram and Ayanavaram would be occupied by this month, the issues pertaining to other hawking zones would soon be settled.

Home-grown handset maker Karbonn Mobiles is looking at Chennai to set up its first manufacturing unit in the country. The company will invest about Rs 70 crore for this.

Karbonn, which sells almost a million mobile phones a month, primarily in the rural markets, today gets its phones manufactured by Foxconn in Taiwan and China, and also sources some of its models from Korea.

Mr Sudhir Hasija, Chairman, Karbonn Mobiles, told Business Line that once the manufacturing unit is set up in India, the company will manufacture 60 per cent of its products here. And once things stabilise in the manufacturing unit in India, Karbonn would like to have all its products made here.

Micromax unit
While Dr N. Sundaradevan, Principal Secretary, Industries Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, declined to comment, other government officials have confirmed that Karbonn has approached the Tamil Nadu Government and that the talks are in “preliminary stages”.

The Government sources also said that Micromax, the largest domestic mobile phone maker, is also considering setting up shop in Chennai.

“We are considering Chennai and also Bangalore, but Chennai seems more attractive for logistics,” Mr Hasija said.

Connectivity advantages apart, Chennai also houses some of the biggest EMS (electronics manufacturing services) companies – Foxconn, Flextronics and Sanmina. These companies today service Nokia and their expertise in supplying to a handset manufacturer is what Karbonn would want to tap.

Furthermore, setting up shop in Chennai would be a home coming of sorts for Karbonn, for Mr Hasija used to run a shop in the electronics hub of the city - the famous Ritchie Street in Chennai before he founded Karbonn in Bangalore in 2009.

The Bangalore-based company's turnover in 2010 was Rs 1,500 crore and it expects to earn 30 per cent more next year.
