Crematorium: private participation mooted

NGOs asked to provide additional infrastructure

Joint efforts: Salem Corporation officials and representatives of various organisations discussing the operation and maintenance of a modern crematorium under construction, in Salem on Wednesday. –

SALEM: The participation of private organisations and non-governmental organisations for the construction, operation and maintenance of the modern crematorium planned in the Kakkayan burial ground was discussed at meeting organised by the Salem Corporation here on Wednesday.

The civic body had already earmarked Rs. 98 lakhs for the project and had started the construction of two burners, a hall and storeroom.

Erode model

It had invited the private and NGOs to form a trust and construct water tank, parking lot, Thiyana Mandapam, a hall to perform poojas and various rituals, saloon, office rooms, facilities for the issue of computerised death certificate, rest room for the labourers, generator and various other facilities.

“We would like to establish the crematorium on the lines of the one functioning Erode. Over Rs. 3 crores had been spent for the establishment of the facility in Erode with the private participation,” civic officials said in the meeting.

The need for a modern crematorium is strongly felt as many of the burial grounds and burning ghats in the city lacked adequate infrastructure and were facing severe shortage of space. The city, with a population of over nine lakh, has over 50 conventional burial grounds and burning ghats.
Contribution

Many participants in the meeting had agreed to contribute for the construction of more facilities at the site.

The civic officials had proposed to establish a trust for the operation and maintenance of the crematorium.

Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy said that the private participation in the project would enable the people to get more facilities at the crematorium.

It would also ensure proper maintenance. Senior officials were present at the meeting.

The Corporation had decided to hold another round of discussions with the organisations willing to participate in the project.

Guys I prefer 25th, coz most of the guys out of TN (like me) will not be getting off on pongal. As 26th is on monday which is a national holiday most of the SSC guys will be in salem b/w 24 'n' 26(my prediction). So we assemble 'n' plan on that time period.^^

Dear Members,

I wish a forum that should be real one and not in the online. Already we have this SSC and Salemjilla forum to discuss about the needs of Salem.

A forum which we form should be registered legally(just like some associations) so that it can be an identity for us.

And regarding meet, any date between 14th and 18th will be ok for me.

You are right. What I mentioned was not another online forum, but a platform rightly registered, and which can take up issues on its own letterhead, get appointments with ministers, elected representatives, officials both in chennai and at Delhi with the strength of our platform, and get things done for the city.
It is my personal experience that lot of follow up is required for any project we take up, even it has the support of influential persons, and this our forum can do to get things achieved for the city.

Hope our Salem group gets the shape in the auspecious month of Thai and bring success to our concerted efforts.

Being in Salem I can join the meeting any day in that week and only look for the convenience of other friends.

HOSUR: For the first time, Krishnagiri district would get an underground drainage system if the State government approves the Rs 71 crore project proposal sent to it by the Hosur Municipality.

The project would not only link all drainages in the town through five sub-stations, but also recycle the water so that it could be used in agricultural fields, said Jai Anand, twelfth ward municipal councillor.

He said all party council members in the municipality have joined hands to implement the project as soon as the government accords its permission.

According to the proposal, the project would be executed by the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board (TWAD) by floating nationwide tender.

Explaining the importance of the proposal, K Govindarajulu, a former municipal councillor, said, since the government is in the process of establishing a special economic zone and IT park in this region, several entities are studying feasibility to set up their units here. At this juncture, he said the town should be upgraded on par with the international standard.

He also said that municipality should float a global tender, allowing experienced international enterprises, to execute the underground drainage project as the work comprises critical underground tunnelling.

Action please: The damaged iron grills of a traffic island at Kondalampatti in Salem.

SALEM: The traffic island at Kondalampatti here remains in a state of neglect for long.

The iron grills of the traffic island got damaged and the officials were yet to initiate any steps to address the issue. Kondalampatti witnesses huge traffic as two national highways meet at the road junction. Road users are exposed to danger as the damaged grills are protruding from the traffic island.

The authorities have not placed any reflectors to warn the vehicle users.

A few vehicle users had taken this issue to the notice of the highways officials. “But no fruitful steps have been taken to repair the iron grills,” they said.

The road users urged the officials to beautify the traffic island and ensure proper maintenance.

Steps should also be initiated to water the plants in the traffic island.

Re-lay the road immediately, residents urge Corporation

Battered: The Kumaragiri Road in Salem.

SALEM: Kumaragiri Road in Ward 39 in the city is in shatters. The residents, a majority of them weavers, say that the road is a vital link to Ammapet and Udayapatti bypass and used by hundreds of school children and office-goers. The road has been neglected for long and despite repeated appeals no step has been taken up so far.

They also say that the road abutting the Kumaragiri Lake is also an important thoroughfare for pilgrims going to Ammapet Sri Mariamman Temple and Kumaragiri Hill temple.

“At festivals times, the entire road gets chocked and those who ride on two-wheelers and motor cycles often fall.”

The residents say that they have even approached the civic body to plug the potholes and craters as a temporary measure.

They urge the Salem Corporation to re-lay their road immediately.

On this circumstance, Collector took a swift action by sending 10 petrol tanker lorries to kovai irugur petrol godown with police security and brought oil to the city. Later the tankers were sent to various parts of the city and supplied to public by restricting 1litre to one person.

Vijayan,

You are correct, we can get the city view from this karadu... but you cannot cover the new part of Salem i.e from 4 roads, Central bus terminus, Fairlands, 5roads, Swarnapuri, Suramangalam areas from Karudu. :)

Though it is named as Kariya perumal karadu, murugan temple on this mountain is very famous and Thai poosam is celebrated grandly in this temple. Murugan temple is on the half of the way to the mountain and till there we have proper steps on the mountain... after that it is like trekking... and first we can see Uchi pillaiyar temple and then again we have to walk downward and then upwards to reach the perumal temple. In Gugai, Shevapet, Ammapet areas it is impossible for expand the roads to 4 lane i.e NH 7 from Fort town and NH 68 from Fort town in down town cannot be expanded to 4 lane.

Fort main road from Shevapet Temple car to Collect rate can be 4 laned!!

Arul, you can very well see the areas like New Bus Terminus, 4 Roads, Fairlands etc from this place. But these places have a good volume of Green cover, when compared to Fort, Shevapet, Gugai and Ammapet.Thats means that you can not really showcase the growth of these places through an aerial view picture.

And this could be developed as one of the attractions in the city, by installing some telescopes, etc. But no one cares about it.

Since the work is not fully over, we can leave the edges for the time being..

But what about the traffic sense of the people? Two bicycle riders are going in the opposite direction, one along the shoulder, and the other along the median. The guy going along the median is doing a suicidal thing, putting trouble to fast moving vehicles on the right side of the carriageway.

Traffic Sense? There is no driving sense even in metro cities where even four wheelers driving on opposite directions on one-way. Nothing to be surprised here...Everywhere the story is same..wheather its a 4 lane or 6 lane or whatever...I believe you are in Bangalore and you must be aware of the way people drive in one-way roads here.. in particular the taxi drivers and even corporate company vehicles....

ERODE: The handloom hub of Chennimalai will soon get a Handloom Export Zone, if the State Government and Union Government approve the district administration’s proposal.

In the proposal the administration has suggested that the cluster can be formed with 320 looms at Rs. 94.11 lakh under the care of a consortium.

It has said that the Centre’s Handloom Export Promotion Council form the consortium by including beneficiary weavers and weavers’ cooperative societies.

For setting up the consortium and implementing the project, the proposal has suggested the formation of a committee under the chairmanship of the Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles, Chennai, and five other members to look into the technological upgrade to be provided in terms of new looms and upgrade of existing looms; skill upgrade of weavers, development of infrastructure like creation of new common centre facility and creation and sustenance of market linkages with exporters.

As for the upgrade of looms, the proposal says 304 of the 320 looms identified may be upgraded, which will be done by the Weavers’ Service Centre in Chennai.

Regarding training the proposal has this to suggest: the weavers shall undergo training in 16 batches under the Integrated Handloom Development Scheme.

On the marketing front, the proposal says the products that will be made fashionable by engaging professional designers will be marketed using professional management consultants.

“Even though there are 25 societies in Chennimalai, not one is engaged in direct export, and skilled weavers weave varieties, from which they get low wages,” the proposal says and adds, “Such a situation can be changed if the cluster comes into being.”

Rice intensification technology makes paddy farmers smile in Sankagiri

R.Ilangovan

It ensures good yield despite using lesser quantity of water

SALEM: Farmers in the cluster of villages around Sankagiri are in a jubilant mood.

The reason for their jubilation is that they have achieved a healthy harvest of paddy this year thanks to the adoption of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technology.

Water from river Cauvery flows into these villages through the Mettur Dam’s East Bank canal, irrigating lands in Sankagiri and Edpadi blocks in the district.

The farmers have been raising paddy, sugarcane and other crops on their lands over the years, conventionally.

All was well when Cauvery flowed quietly till the river was caught in the eye of a political storm.

At a time when even Thanjavur delta has gone without adequate water, the ayacutdars of these blocks in Salem district also suffer from the same predicament of inadequate water for their crops.

Hence many have switched over to rain-fed ones.

But as the farmers in this region are more adept at paddy cultivation, the Department of Agriculture has come forward to address the dilemma of these farmers by initiating the SRI programme, which promotes the latest technology in paddy cultivation with lesser quantity of water.

As a preliminary exercise a team of farm officers had brought 340 hectares under the SRI programme in the villages of Arasiramani, Kullampatti, Mayilampatti, Kaveripatti, Thevur, Koneripatti and Pullagoundanpatti in Sankagiri block.

Training was imparted to the farmers and a subsidy of Rs. 2,000 per hectare was provided along with inputs such as seed, cono weeders and planting marker implement.

Thus the farmers had successfully reduced the intake of water by 40 to 50 per cent of actual requirement in the conventional method of cultivation.

“The harvest in the fields of two farmers is very encouraging as it has registered a 100 per cent increase in the yield,” said A. Sekar Anandham, Joint Director of Agriculture, Salem.

The yield now obtained from the field of Murugan of Kullampatti village is 13,700 kg per hectare against the past yield of 7,400.

S. Ramasamy in the nearby village of Mayiladi has harvested 11,250 as against his last year’s yield of 5,620 kg.

“We hope the same bumper yield under the SRI in other villages too,” pointed out Mr. Sekar Anandham.

A team of officials including Assistant Director of Agriculture P. Soundararajan, Head of Sugarcane Research Station, Cuddalore Bala Rajandiran, PA to Collector (Agriculture) S. Karunanidhi, visited the fields and evaluated the success of Sankagiri paddy farmers.

NAMAKKAL: Jedarpalayam bed regulator, constructed across Cauvery River in Paramathi Velur, will be given a facelift to make it more attractive for tourists.

The surroundings of the bed regulator will be improved and facilities will be created for the tourists to enable them enjoy the spectacular view of the meandering Cauvery River. The Namakkal district administration has approved a plan to create a park near the bed regulator, which will provide space for the tourists to relax and listen to the roar of the river as it falls down from a height.

The area has long been popular among locals and people in Namakkal, Salem and Karur districts. Tourist flow from other parts of the State is yet to pick up because of lack of facilities.

Issues

District Collector U. Sagayam, after visiting the bed regulator, said steps had been initiated to address various tourism-related issues and make Jedarpalayam a popular tourism destination.

The public works department had already carried out repair and maintenance works at a cost of Rs. 24 lakh. The department would spend another Rs. 23 lakh this fiscal for repairs and Rs. 20 lakh for construction.

The works would begin shortly, the Collector added.

By Deepa Kandaswamy, Christian Science Monitor
i Live in Salem - Salem, India, not Salem, Massachussets. Almost every day in this city of approximately 800,000 people, we have two-hour blackouts because power plants fail to function at their full capacity due to the monsoons.

During these blackouts, our family gathers in the living room and we quiz one another on various topics. Since my family and others living in Salem don't know much about Hollywood celebrities, I usually quiz them on this topic. One day, when it was my turn to pose a question, I asked, "Who is George Clooney?"

I expected silence, but I wasn't prepared for the wrong answers that came my way.

"He must be an educator. I'm right, aren't I?" said my mother, beaming.

She was referring to Cluny School, an all-girls school run by nuns and a famous landmark in Salem.

"That makes sense, but it is run by nuns. Maybe he was a priest who founded the school?" my father said hesitantly.

Father George Clooney - the founder of the famous all-girls school in Salem? I thought of the adjectives typically used to describe the actor - sexy, charming, handsome - and burst out laughing.

"No, he isn't a priest or an educator," I said. "I don't know, but if I have to guess, he must be a doctor - the one who discovered cloning?" My mother's elder sister, Manonmani Aunty, volunteered.

"Wrong, aunty."

"Was he a scientist then?" she asked.

"No, aunty."

"I've never heard of him," said my "cousin sister."

The others remained silent.

"He is a Hollywood actor," I said triumphantly.

I picked up the newspaper lying on the desk, which displayed his photo, and showed it to everyone. "This is him. He is a Hollywood superstar, and he is considered one of the sexiest men alive."

"Hmm... He isn't even good-looking," said my cousin sister.

Tomorrow, I plan on asking everyone if they've heard of Angelina Jolie. I'm sure they would think she is a work of art created by angels because "jolie" is slang for "work" in my language.

Blissfully ignorant

I never realised that learning about Hollywood actors could be so much fun. Most people of Salem are blissfully ignorant of Hollywood, although Salem has a long movie history. Salem is one of the birthplaces of the South Indian movie industry, especially for Tamil films.

Some of the pioneers of the movie business lived and made movies here such as T.R. Sundaram, the founder of Modern Theatres Studio. Salem, being picturesque and blessed with varying terrains, proved ideal for filming movies of different genres. Therefore, seeing movie stars here is common.

The Tamil film industry is currently celebrating the 75th anniversary of Bombay Talkies, one of the first Indian movie studios, and churns out more than 100 movies each year.

Here in Salem, we have our own stars and acting legends such as Shivaji Ganesan, whose fan following included Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, James Garner, and Charlton Heston.

George Clooney, though, can easily walk the streets of Salem unrecognised. I'd be thrilled if he would knock on my door - provided he can get past our security guard, Lakkhaiyan, who is extremely suspicious of foreigners.

But is he the sexiest man alive? No way! At least not in Salem.

Waiting for a facelift: Sivagiri town panchayat will soon improve infrastructure in the town’s bus stand, for which it has submitted a proposal.

ERODE: The 1.6-acre bus stand in Sivagiri is nothing more than a ground surrounding a row of shops. There is no compound wall and not even a signboard that says that the place is a bus stand.

During rains it is worse, say residents, pointing out that the ground become so slushy that it is difficult to board and alight from buses. There is hardly any shelter or roof either. Residents want the town panchayat to improve facilities at the bus stand.

Proposal

The town panchayat officials say the bus stand will sport a new look if the State Government approves the proposal it has sent.

The civic body has asked for Rs. 17.58 lakh for the work. Fifty per cent of the fund will be Government grant and the civic body will get the rest under the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund.

With the money, the officials say, they will lay a concrete floor; build a compound wall and also a public convenience facility.

They add that there is also a proposal to widen the two culverts so that buses get in and move out easily.

SALEM: The Salem Corporation will prepare a comprehensive plan to improve the infrastructure facilities to beautify the city.

A meeting to hear the views of the public on this project will be held at the Hanging Garden on June 19 under the chairmanship of Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini.

The Central and State Governments have sanctioned a number of major projects, including the establishment of a new railway division, super speciality hospital and an Information Technology park. Huge investments would be made on these projects and improve the living conditions here. So we have to prepare a plan to improve the overall infrastructure of the city, Corporation officials said.

The plan includes creation of parks and entertainment facilities, increasing the green cover, better traffic management, controlling the usage of plastics, construction of plazas, formation of ring rod and construction of sub-ways and flyovers. The Corporation would also establish commercial enterprises on a public-private partnership basis. A walkers park and club and other recreational facilities will also be created.

Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman said, “We have decided to discuss the proposed plan with the citizens and make changes according to their views. The plan will be more people-friendly.”

In the morning session of the meeting, members of residential welfare associations can participate. During the afternoon, technical experts, members from the industrial associations, trade unions, banks and non-governmental organisations can participate.

The plan will be implemented by 2010.

This is really good to see the vision posted by Salem Mayor. But it will be great only if they start/implement it on the right time.

Beautiful Salem 2010 - proposed plans

Tha Salem City Municipal Corporation has finalized its plans for improving the infrastructure of the city under the Beautiful Salem scheme. The corporation had called for a meeting with the public two months back, and agreed to few plans in principle. Few of the developments activities like widening of congested city roads etc have already started/completed.

Below is a news article in Daily Thanthi on Corporation's final plans.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9068/ezhilmigusalemij2.jpg

The plans concentrates mostly on the traffic snarls inside the city owing to a greater amount of floating population. All theroads leading to the city from Salem Junction are being widened. The roads are Junction - Five Roads - Sharadha College - Hasthampatty, and Junction - Suramangalam - Thiruvagoundanoor - Three Roads.

Encroachments along all the city roads are being removed and the roads will be widened soon.

Widening of all the roads alone will not solve the traffic problems, and hence fly-overs have been planned at 4 important junctions.
* State Bank Colony
* Five Roads
* Four Roads
* A mega fly-over connecting Bretts Road and Cherry Road at the level crossings.

Corporation will approach the central government with its plans to get Salem added in the Jawaharlal Nehru Scheme. The present population of the city is around 8.50 lakhs, anyways attempts are made for the same.

Of these fly-overs, the fly-over at Five Roads will be an engineering marvellous, as it is a junction of five busy roads. And also the Fly-over connecting Bretts Road and Chery road will be a great one.

* State Bank Colony
* Five Roads
* Four Roads

* Vehicles from Junction towards Swarnapuri will take the fly-over
* Vehicles from Junction towards Fairlands/Sharadha College Road will NOT take the fly-over, but vehicles from Fairlands/SharadhaCollege Road towards Junction will take the fly-over

* Vehicles from Periyar University towards any of the four branching Road will NOT take the fly-over

* All vehicles coming from Meyyanur towards any of the four branching roads will NOT use the fly-over

Vision Salem 2010

Myself and Mr. Ganesh (memberid: tarung) made a visit to the Salem City Municipal Corporation Office at Fort on 7th November. The Mayor was not present for the day at that time. The Personal Secretary of the Corporation Commisioner spoke kindly and directed us to the residence of the Commisioner on Ramakrishna Road.

We thanked the commisioner for all his efforts he made recently to widen the city roads, bringing in provate firm for cleaning the city, and for all his future plans for the city under the 'Vision Salem 2010' scheme.

He passed a great news that he just granted approval for a 14-storeyed building on Sharadha College Road, for which the construction would commence shortly. He is confidant about the Vision 2010 becoming a reality. He also shared his ideas on lighting the entire bye-pass road stretch with high-illumination CFL lamps which is in progress.

He has positive thoughts on the introduction of new trains out of Salem. His major objective is to retain the cosmopolitan look of the city, and to improve the infrastructure of the city further.

It was a nice time on the eve of Diwali. Later, we took a ride along the Sharadha College Road. The roads were kept clean and the stretch has been made 4-lane between the Fairlands Police Station and Junction.

A couple of large commercial Complexes were under construction. Planet Fashion & Crocodile showrooms were new additions to my last visit.

We then turned right at Five Roads Junction and witnessed foundation being constructed for a large residential apartment right opposite to Rathna Arcade. We then reached the by-pass road junction at Kuranguchavadi, and then stopped at the Steel Plant Road Junction for a break.

We then rode upto the Steel Plant. We could see many real estate offices throughtout the stretch. Many residential bunglows were completed and under construction. The real estate proces are rising up in view of the upcoming SAIL SEZ, Steel Plant Expansion and the IT Park.

On returning we took the Junction, Surmangalam way to reach New Bus Stand. The Suramangalam Main Road is full of residential constructions.

Few update reg our meeting with SC commissioner.

Suggestion was given to improve bus service in Salem!

This report says that Salem city bus service should improve like Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy. Salem does not have circular bus service like Coimbatore and Trichy. Coimbatore is given as an example here!! In CBE city buses runs from Marudamalai(i this it is 1C from Vadavali) to Ondiputhur, these two places are there in the 2 corner of the city, but the bus passes through the heart of the city. Salem lags because all the bus service starts from Town bus stand only... i.e of one wants to travel from north end of the city to south he has to use 2 buses... he has to change bus in town bus stand!

This should be totally changed and bus terminus should made at other parts of the city. So that more connections can be acheived!

Suggestions includes bus operation from suburbs to suburbs which will pass through the city!

http://www.dinakaran.co.in/epaperdinakaran/9122007/Salem%20Page%20-%2004-07.jpg

These suggestion were given by Mr.Saran@Salem

It will be great it TNSTC - Salem consider these suggestion for developing city bus service in Salem.

Chennai, Jan 20 (IANS) Contrary to its earlier restructuring plans for Madras Aluminium Co (Malco), the Vedanta group has decided to acquire the entire shareholding of the Salem-based firm and perhaps delist the scrip.

In a regulatory statement to the National Stock Exchange Tuesday, Malco said its holding company, Vedanta subsidiary Twinstar Holdings with a controlling 80 percent stake, has proposed to acquire the remaining 20 percent as per the market regulator's guidelines on delisting of securities

“Meltdown, Satyam fiasco have not hit IT parks”

Response to these projects has not diminished: official

Many fiirms have started developing their plots

Land allotment proposal for Tiruchi park forwarded to the government

SALEM: Neither the global meltdown nor the Satyam fiasco has adversely impacted the development of the IT parks-cum-special economic zones in Tier II cities. “In fact, the response to these projects has not diminished a bit,” says Santhosh Babu, Managing Director, Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, and Director of e-Governance.

Talking to reporters after inspecting the IT park site here on Tuesday, Mr. Babu allayed the fears about the prospects of these parks. Many players, including big companies, had agreed to set up shop and started developing their plots. “After all, the overhead expenditure for the cash-strapped industry is lesser [in Tier II cities] than in metros like Chennai.”

The development of the Sholinganallur park had almost been completed, and the Coimbatore park would be completed by December, he said. Land had been handed over at Elanthakulam and Vadapalanchi in Madurai. While the land allotment proposal for the Tiruchi park had been forwarded to the government, a plan for Salem would be prepared shortly. The Salem park would be developed in two phases: the first on 45 acres in the total area of 164 acres, for which the expression of interest would be called for; and the rest would be improved in Phase II.

Asked whether the ‘window period’ for the developers would be extended in view of the recession, Mr. Santosh Babu said the Chief Minister alone could take a decision.

On the legal dispute with Burn Standard, a public sector unit, over land allotment, he said Collector J. Chandrakumar had resolved it by allotting 120 acres to the company for mining. The site earmarked for the Salem park had been leased out to the company.

“To monitor and expedite the IT projects in Tier II cities, steering committees have been formed, ” he said.

As for e-governance, Mr. Santosh Babu said 208 locations had been identified for the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network, which would connect government offices. The work was under way to establish 800 common service centres, through which the people could access go welfare aids and documents.

SALEM: Salem Corporation officials on Tuesday held discussions with the officials of three construction and engineering firms, which evinced interest in implementing the civic body’s ambitious solid waste management programme (SWMP).

Corporation officials explained about the existing infrastructure facilities, geographical information and population details to the representatives of the companies.

They also gave a presentation on the programme, which was a long pending demand of the people of Salem.

Corporation Commissioner K.S.Palanisamy, presiding over the meeting, said that the execution of the SWMP was essential to improve the sanitary condition in the city.

Meanwhile, people in the city are disappointed over the inordinate delay in the execution of the waste management programme.

Though the civic body had prepared the proposal for the SWMP long ago, it could not start the implementation due to various reasons. As a result, the city was yet to witness visible improvement in the sanitary condition, they pointed out.

Waste collection remains tardy, and mounds of garbage dumped on roadsides remain uncleared for weeks together.

The civic body’s initiative such as garbage collection through self-help groups and mass cleaning camps too lost momentum in a few months after they began.

The privatization of sanitary works in 21 wards in the city also did not bring in any significant improvement in the sanitary condition, they said.

The Corporation’s gross failure in the execution of waste management programme has led to drainage channels being heavily choked.

Mosquito menace has also reared its head again threatening outbreaks such as chinkungunya. “There has been no sustained effort to improve the sanitary condition in the city,” residents point out. Though people complain about poor sanitary conditions to higher authorities repeatedly, no concrete results have emerged.

Coimbatore, Jan. 21 The representative body of the organised textile industry in the south, The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), opened a regional office in Salem on Wednesday to reach out to the mills in a region that boasts of a strong presence of the industry.

The regional office would address the needs of more than 350 textile mills in Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Vellore districts.

Mr S. Dinakaran, Vice-Chairman of Coimbatore-headquartered SIMA, told the media that in a globalised environment, it was necessary for SIMA to reach out to the mills in the major textile clusters to ensure their competitiveness.

The office would liaise with various Government departments, help the mills in upgrading skills of their employees and offer technical and management consultancy services.

Highlighting the reasons that have led to the crisis being faced by the textile mills in the country – such as currency fluctuation, high interest rates and cotton price and steep hike in the minimum support prices for cotton – he pointed out that the stimulus packages announced by the Government were “not adequate”. He reiterated the textile industry’s demands such as capital consisting of seven per cent interest rate for purchase of cotton, reduction in working capital margin money to 10 per cent, among others.

Mr Dinakaran said the Tamil Nadu Government had not taken “any positive step” to overcome the power crisis. “Plenty of power was available in the northern States during winter and rainy seasons particularly during night hours at less than Rs 2 per unit of power,” he added.

The university submitted a proposal to the UGC seeking Rs. 70 crore for the development of the existing departments.

hi frendz....
did anyone noticed.....in SALEM - MS express......ayodyapattinam,vazhappady,chinnasalem,tambaram stops are deleted from list from 8th feb on wards..!!!anyone knows the reason??

Ayodiyapatinam, Valapadi, Chinasalem and Tindivanam were additional temporary stops given by SR for this MS-Salem express for 6months period since inauguration.

By 08/02/2009 MS-SA exp will be a 6months old train. We can see press release from railways for making this temporary stops as permanent stops.

Especially Ayodhiyapatinam and Chinasalem gives decent patronage for its size.

I dont know where we need flyover in Sarada college road and central bus stand.!!

^^ I assume that they are planning to build a straight fly-over for the vehicles that do not want to stop at the Saradha College and the Central Bus Terminus. This will ensure that there is very less traffic on the land during peak hours and will make it easy for the public to cross the roads without having to wait long / or risk their lives. Its a good thinking, but it is in all probability will continue to remain on papers, and the corporation would have already forgotten about such a proposal made few days back, just like the ones that they PLANNED to build on State Bank Colony and Five Roads.

But again, the Mulluvadi Gate ROB is much more important than any other junctions. God knows when the corporation realizes the real needs and does the needful.

SALEM: Forest Survey of India (FSI) of Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India, is undertaking a nation-wide survey on trees in urban and rural limits, which are outside the forest areas in Tamil Nadu, primarily to ascertain the density ratio of greenery and the impact of pollution.

A four-member official team, led by its Senior Technical Officer Ratan Sharma from its Bangalore-based south zone office, has begun the onerous task of taking inventory of trees after an extensive survey on the streets and roads in the urban limits of Salem city and its suburbs.

“We have come here to conduct the survey on trees outside the forest areas in rural and urban areas where human habitations co-exist. The total number of trees, the density, all based on diameter and height, will be noted down. These inputs will be submitted to our zonal office at Bangalore,” Mr. Sharma told The Hindu here. Surveyed trees would be sporting permanent markers.

The FSI has also dispatched several other teams to undertake simultaneous and similar surveys to various parts in districts and towns in Tamil Nadu. Other than Salem, the survey of trees is being undertaken in another major town, Tirunelveli, down south. “We will cover other cities, towns and districts too including Chennai shortly,” Mr. Sharma said.

Four-laning of Salem-Namakkal highway to be completed next month

Staff Reporter

Four-lane, 30-km stretch from Namakkal to Karur dedicated to nation

PARAMATHI VELUR (NAMAKKAL): Four-laning of the 50-km Salem – Namakkal section of National Highway 7 is likely to be completed by the end of next month, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu said here on Saturday.

After inaugurating the four-lane, 30-km stretch of the highway from Namakkal to Karur at a function, the Minister said that there was no delay in the implementation of the four-laning project in the Salem – Namakkal section. Works in other sections were progressing well.

Mr. Baalu said the ministry had sanctioned over Rs.54,000 crore to Tamil Nadu for various projects. The total investment included about Rs.33,000 crore for developing road infrastructure. The projects also included establishment of a maritime university and a maritime complex near Chennai.

The development of better road infrastructure, he said, would help minimise road accidents and bring down operational cost of vehicles. The country witnessed over 4.6 lakh road accidents in 2006 in which over 1.05 lakh people lost their lives and about five lakh persons sustained injuries.

Apart from improving the road infrastructure to prevent accidents, the government was promoting awareness of traffic safety among people, he said.

Mr. Baalu said that the toll collected on roads in India was the lowest compared to many other countries, including developed nations.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan spoke.

With in a couple of years, you can expect the smart card you produce to pay toll tax along the IT Expressway in the city, to offer more services. For example, you can use it as a debit card at entertainment centres, hotels, fuel stations and parking lots along the expressway.

Efkon India, which enabled the smart card and the toll system on the IT Expressway intends to make the card a multi-purpose one. “But this necessitates installation of card readers at various locations on the IT Expressway, which may take up to two years. The smart card would function as a kind of a dedicated debit card,” said CEO Pushkar Kulkarni.

Efkon India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Austria-based Efkon, specializes in intelligent transportation systems and payment solutions on highways.

The graphics, personalisation and issuance of cards is being handled by IT Expressway Ltd (ITEL), a special purpose vehicle of Tamil Nadu Road Development Corp that developed the IT Corridor on Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

“Smart cards have to be touched at the readers located at the five toll plazas within the Expressway and the money is deducted from the cardholder’s account on ITEL’s website. According to the norms specified by the Reserve Bank of India, about Rs 20,000 can be stored on a card at a time if it is being used as a common purse for low value transactions,” Kulkarni told to The New Indian Express. Thereafter, it would have to be recharged with a fresh amount.

Efkon is also developing the Tiruchy tollway, which is currently in the design stage. “It will take another six months to complete.” Two more projects in traffic management systems and toll systems are underway between Salem and Kumarapalayam and Kumarapalayam and Chengapalli near Coimbatore. At present, they are in the installation and commissioning stage.

“While the setting up of the toll systems costs around Rs 5 crore, the traffic management system costs between Rs 5 crore and Rs 15 crore.Efkon sees fresh opportunity in the proposed toll roads in Karnataka.

“Developing the toll system for every 100 km of road means a Rs10 crore business for the company. Efkon holds a 50 per cent market share in the country,” pointed out Chief Technology Officer, V Rangarajan.

With the new projects in its kitty, the company’s revenue for present calendar year is expected to touch Rs 100 crore as against Rs 60 crore last year.

The credit crunch, he admitted, has affected new projects, as infrastructure companies are not being able to achieve financial closures.

^^Thats a great news..
ARUL your wish has come true!

Ya good news,

But it one coach looks to be a political gimmick.

The real need is 8 coaches of MS-SA express to run till Mettur dam as passenger/express train b/w Salem-Mettur dam and same can be used for operating the passenger train from Mettur to Salem Town.

The existing DEMU can be used in Coimbatore-Mettupalaiyam stretch for shuttle service.

I believe they will increase coaches to mettur after analyzing the patronage.
Is it going to be a Extra coach or Using the existing coach in the train? Are they going to send to DADAR as well if it is a extra coach?

Logesh,

The timings mentioned in the paper between Salem and Mettur Dam is coinciding with existing Mettur Dam-Salem-Erode passenger train, so they may be attaching one coach of Chennai Egmore-Salem express with that passenger train. But i wonder how that is gonna happen!! As far as my knowledge Erode-Mettur Dam passenger is a DEMU (Diesel multiple Unit), i have never seen/heard attaching an conventional coach with DEMU rake.

We have to wait and watch whats gonna happen on 1st Feb!

well, DEMU rake will go to mettur and return back in reverse direction..
How will they connect this coach? But as u said, let us wait till 1st Feb!

This stretch needs attention

Inconvenience: The badly-damaged stretch on the Coimbatore Highways, near Kondalampatti, in Salem.

SALEM: A stretch between Kondalampatti and Neikkarapatti on the Salem-Coimbatore National Highways remains in a state of neglect for long.

The National Highways Authority of India is yet to take up the four-laning work on the stretch.
Potholes

Huge craters and potholes on the stretch pose danger to vehicle users.

The stretch witnesses heavy traffic as a large number of people from Edapadi and Sankagiri taluks take the road to reach their workplaces in the city.

The authorities have taken up the four-laning of the entire Salem – Coimbatore Highways except the stretch from Kondalampatti to Neikkarapatti. As a result, it remains in a bad condition.

The authorities should at least take up patchwork on the stretch, the people
demanded.

I don't think this stretch will be 4-laned as part of the ongoing project. The new alignment of NH-47 takes a leftward diversion near the Uthamacholapuram temple (as one approaches the city from CBE/ED side) and joins the bypass road near Kandampatti. What it means is that, the stretch in question is no longer a part of the National Hightways # 47.

I think it will be transferred to the State Highways department. This stretch also has a crossing for the Salem - Karur new BG line which is u/c.

I was expecting this to happen when we go for 4 laning of NH 68.

But can you tell us exactly where did you see the board for new bye-pass?

The current bye-pass from Seelainkenpati to Udayapati runs almost to foot hills of mountains, but the alignment has to change after Kumaragiri hills towards Udayapati.

I guess NHAI will plan directly connecting bye-pass with Ayodhiyapatinam instead with congested Udayapati!

The Inaguration of Link express from 1063/1064 Train to mettur was supposed to happen Yesterday(Feb-1). Now it has been cancelled by the railway authorities and postponed to a indefinite date.

Authorities say that, link express to Mettur is not a feasible one, as the existing mettur-salem-erode passenger already correlate with this express timings and helps the passengers to connect mettur. Other maintenance problems also leads to non-feasibility, like only 6 coaches can be parked in mettur station. Earlier some passengers demanded the whole train as link express to mettur.

There is good news and a bad news.

Good news is : Reliance plans to open a Cash Carry Business outlet in Salem (1 among 15 outlets in India).

Cash Carry Business ? Briefly explaining, its wholesale shop used to sell items to retailers, offices and restaurants etc and not to common people.

Retailers will in turn sell the items to common people.

There is quite competitive fight b/w Indian retail giants.

India's cash & carry market has attracted global retail giants like Wal-Mart from the US with Bharti, Tesco from UK with Tata and Metro from Germany and Shoprite from South Africa. The global giants see it as an opportunity to enter India where FDI is barred in direct-to-consumer retail.

Bad news is Reliance temporarily put this operation on hold due to their cash crunch.

Since this has earned a competitive fight among the big guys, Bharti might keep an eye on the Reliance decision and could enter into our market before they do. Also if Cash and Carry markets are coming up, it will pull more retails into the city.

Hope for the best.

Why cant lorry owners join hands and demand the Salem railway division/southern railway for creating the railway freight terminal some where in this bye-pass road nearer to Salem-Karur/Coimbatore railway track.

Integrated railway freight terminal+lorry terminal/market will be plus point for Salem becoming as logistics hub for this region.

This will give scope for making the market as passenger terminal for the city and Shevapet/Leigh Bazaar will get a big relief from traffic.

Now freight train from Karur(future), Coimbatore has to take loco reversal at the Salem junction goods terminal for reaching Market station... so a freight terminal near Kandhampati bye-pass will solve this problem. And bye-pass line from Town-Junction line to Junction-Karur/Coimbatore line is much needed one for future!

And bye-pass line from Town-Junction line to Junction-Karur/Coimbatore line is much needed one for future!

Arul,
Railway Terminal will only affect the business of Lorries..
So cannot expect lorry owners to take this initiative..
FYI..llot of north bound lorry owners are bound in salem, namakkal district in entire south india.. already LORRIES and RAILWAYS are in tough competition to supply coal in Salem regions industries..

Logesh,

I am talking about the lorries used as feeder service from market station.

Salem Market station handles 3-4 freight service+container service per week and all the goods received and loaded are handled by lorries in lorry market of shevapet.

^^yes arul i agree..
but those big shots in lorry owners association are the persons who will direct these state permit riders.. some of these feeder service owners also have NP..

But anyways... Salem is the ideal location for freight terminal in surrounding areas.. if mill owners of this region take up the initiative.. this will workout..

I guess work is resumed in Salem-Kallukottai stretch.

I have seen the V-Kootu Road Interchange work. The Underpass work on Vriddhachalam side is in progress. Chennai side is yet to be taken up.

Talaivasal needs a byepass, but it will be difficult and will be real circuitous one if comes, because there is lake on northern side and the river on the southern side. 4-lane work at Talaivasal bus-stand area will create some delay, I suppose.

Another Nice Update Arul. Thanks.

Forum Name

Dear Members, Even though SSF sounds better, I feel that we can get the ultimate moto of the forum along with the name of the forum. I had something like Salem City Infrastructure & Development Forum in my mind. See if this is something that can be considered. If everything is finalized, please ignore this.

A small suggestion to the name, if other members also accept this small change, may be we can finalise the logo.

Here goes the forum Name : Salem City Infrastructure & Development Seekers Forum

This is because we are all seekers only and not the creators.
