gvijayan April 27th, 2009, 12:49 PM ^^ That tells all about your total mindset. If you are in doubt, spend Rs. 130/-. Take a bypass ryder from CBE to Salem (Rs. 54/- one way), then take a bus to Yercaud from Salem (Rs. 11/- one way). Then return back to Salem in the same bus. Make sure this journey is done sometime between 6.30pm and early morning. You will erase the above comment of yours as soon as you return home.
And do not make comments without knowing the fact. Search any travel reports, blogs, hotel reviews of Yercaud. You will see this particular thing described in each and every website.

Many BPO's are spreading in the city..... This shows city has tremendous potential for developing this industry in big way. And many BPO's, IT related company are seems to be started very recently during this economy down turn.. May be they get good business because of cost cutting in bigger metro cities.
Hope government and Indian software giants too take serious steps for major IT park construction in the city.

Into_salem May 11th, 2009, 04:37 PM Salem: At the foothills of the Yercaud hills lies the geological treasure trove of Salem. Surrounded by hills rich in iron, bauxite and magnesite, Salem is a miner’s paradise.
With major steel plants, aluminium units and cement factories standing beside the Stanley reservoir, which supplies Cauvery water to the delta districts of Tamil Nadu, Salem was once a famous industrial hub. Today, however, with industrial growth on a slide, it has turned into a major supplier of migrant labour to neighbouring Karnataka.
Salem city is an urban nightmare with choking traffic, dirtyroads and a drinking water shortage. The AIADMK and DMK battled for the Mayor’s crown but have failed to attend to its overflowing sewers, dirty roads and water scarcity.
The national highways to Salem are smooth, offering a pleasant drive, but the city is largely uncared for by the civic agencies. The State government had announced the setting up of an IT park near Salem, but it is yet to take off, and the site on which it was to come up is being allegedly raided by illegal mining operators.
In this election, Salem’s underdevelopment has been pushed to the backseat, in the heat of vote bank politics, factional rivalry and poll freebies. For the DMK’s Salem strongman, Veerapandi Arumugham, it is a prestige battle as it is for his ally and State Congress president KV Thangkabalu, who is fighting hard to retain the seat.
Thangkabalu is facing voters’ disenchantment for “remaining out of reach after the elections”. Even DMK voters insist he has not visited the villages after his victory in 2004. “It is wrong to say I have remained out of reach. I have attended to the needs of the voters and worked for the creation of Salem railway division,” says Thangkabalu. But with Congress caught in factional rivalry, his own partymen are campaigning against him. Says Arumugham: “We are working very hard for a Congress victory. But Congressmen are not cooperating.” The AIADMK’s local heavyweight, S Semmalai, is already talking of a “huge margin of victory.”
Amid the electioneering din, the issues of Salem’s infrastructure and industrial growth will remain neglected in this election too.

We cannot completely agree with the TOI's report.
I dont see the city roads are dirty. Yes the road takes more volume of vehicles especially arterial roads like Omalur road, Trichy road and Sarada college road.
But i never see the city roads are dirty.
Anyway first time TOI is giving importance for infrastructure needs in tier II cities of TN, let us hope they keep continuing even after the elections.

Into_salem May 16th, 2009, 02:28 AM Plans to improve facilities before handing over on lease
New hope: The Salem Corporation has taken over the administration of Anna Park.
SALEM: The Salem Corporation has taken over the administration of the Anna Park located along Omalur main road here on Friday.
The civic body had earlier handed over the operation and maintenance of the park to a private person on a lease basis for a period of nine years. As the lease period ended recently, the civic authorities took over the park.
Officials said they were planning to handover the operation of the park on a lease once again.
But this would take some time as the Corporation council had to give its approval.
The civic body had planned to improve the facilities and play material in the park before handing over it again on a lease.
The park is one of the few places in the city where people come to spend their leisure time. It witnesses huge crowds during the weekends. Over 1,000 people visit the park during weekends and holidays.

It looks good alteast the Dinamalar paper remember about that plan.
Road have been widened, but the medians are not planned as the part of it. But i saw median construction in 5 roads to Bangalore bye-pass via Kurangachavadi.
Flyovers, subways are still a distance dream. Let us wait for another 5 years for getting some funds from central gvt urban department. State gvt will never think beyond Chennai.....
But little scope we have for another 2 years since the state gvt rulling party may think to come again in western TN belt.

Arul Murugan May 20th, 2009, 02:35 PM Srini sir..........
In the meantime, SAIL has issued a letter of intent to Jaiprakash Associates Ltd with a view to forming a joint venture for producing 2 million tonnes (MT) of cement per annum. The proposed joint venture, in which SAIL will have 26 per cent equity, is being formed as a part of the company's sustained eco-friendly efforts to explore an alternative mode of slag disposal at its Bhilai Steel Plant.
this was the plan of SAIL in disposing the slag generated from the blast furnace of the melting plant. Surely the above facility needs more than 600INR crore investment.
Now any idea on the plan of disposing the slag from the melting plant which is U/C in SSP?
If i am correct even the Jindal steels if they have blast furnace, then slag production will be there... And Mettur also going to produce the flyash from its 2nd thermal plant.
Can we expect some huge investment in Salem region from this waste products of Thermal plants and steel plants?
Surely this is going to help in some way.... either through logistics i.e transportation by road or rail or new production facilities in Salem steel plant-Mettur belt itself.
Arul Murugan May 20th, 2009, 02:39 PM SOUTHERN RAILWAY RAIL FREIGHT GETS A JUMP START
In the year 2008-09, Southern Railway had exceeded its freight loading target (in million tones) by 4% and improved over the previous year by 12%. This trend is continuing during the month of April and the Railway has shown a 39% increase in earnings from freight during the month of April 2009 over April 2008. In million tones, the loading on Southern Railway during this month is 14% over target and 25% over the corresponding period last year.
What is significant is that, not just the tonnage alone has exceeded in April 2009 but the Net tonne kilometer per wagon day has shown an 12.5% improvement. This in essence is the highest indicator of the railway's ability to both carry additional cargo and utilize its infrastructure to the maximum. The railway has also achieved a 6.5% increase in the number of kilometers that each wagon ran per day and has reduced the turn round times of wagons by 6%. All these points towards higher levels of operating efficiency.
In the terms of commodities, Southern Railway has shown a 33% increase in the quantum of coal loaded and carried on its system. Of this a significant increase is from our major ports in the region namely Chennai, Ennore and Tuticorin. There is almost a 30% increase in the quantum of coal being moved to the Raichur Thermal Power Plant, Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant and Mettur Thermal Power Plant from these two ports. There is also an increase of coal is being transported for industrial use mainly to M/s. Malco, Tamil Nadu News Print, Pugalur and India Cements at Talayuthu. The Railway has also shown a 15% increase in quantum of cement loaded.

chennaidesi May 25th, 2009, 04:46 PM Cypress has setup a Programmable System on Chip (PSoC) embedded systems development lab at Sona College of Technology (Sona Tech) of Salem, Tamil Nadu. Cypress will offer training and tools (both hardware and software) for the faculty and students. This is the 3rd such lab in India. The other two are at Anna University, Chennai and Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bangalore.
PSoC is becoming popular word among Indian ee students. Labs such as these motivate electronics engineering students to take up hardware design seriously rather than branching out to some application software domain. Also students are exposed to latest industry requirements in embedded system domain.
By making this lab facility available to other nearby engineering colleges, Cypress has made its resources well utilized.
Sona Tech will incorporate PSoC solutions in the Microcontroller/Microprocessor, Digital Design, and Analog Design curriculum and research projects.
"This new PSoC laboratory, which Cypress is graciously collaborating with us on, demonstrates Sona Tech's committment to bring established and emerging technologies to our engineering students," said A. Dhirajlal, Secretary of Sona Tech. "The PSoC platform offers a powerful development environment to learn practical design skills that our students will bring with them into their careers."
"This agreement helps Cypress continue to build its presence with the growing, talented foundation of engineers in India," said Pahsupathy Gopalan, Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Corporate Business Development at Cypress. "This new lab will familiarize Sona Tech students with the flexibility and integration delivered by the PSoC platform. We are confident that the ease-of-use and versatility of PSoC will lead many new designers to leverage the technology as customers

Arul Murugan May 27th, 2009, 07:10 AM Vijayan, here is the real reason for shutting the operation!
MALCO shuts down its operations!
This is a very bad news for the industrial sector of Salem. Tomorrow (30 November, 2008) is going to be the final day of operations at the MALCO Aluminium plant operated by M/s Vedanta resources from Mettur.
Steep decrease in the Aluminium price and the higher production cost from the Mettur facility has made the management to intensify its operations from its plant at Jharsuguda, Orissa. As many as 700 employees are getting relocated to various factories of Vedanta Resources, including the Jharsuguda plant and the Sterlite, Tuticorin.
MALCO will continue with its CPP (Captive Power Plant) and sell electric power to the private industries based at Coimbatore, Salem etc.
The cost of production at Mettur is highly contributed by the transportation cost involved in bringing the coal from Neyveli or imported through Cuccalore Port.
The Jharsuguda plant has coal mines located very nearby, and the labour cost is also cheaper there. The cost of production in Jharsuguda is less than 50% of the cost incurred in Mettur.
In all ways, it is a real bad news from the industrial perspective of Salem and Mettur.
MALCO to stop illegal mining in Kolli Hills
PRESS RELEASE
Speak-Out Salem & Corporate Accountability Desk
21st November 2008
CHENNA, - Confronted with evidence that its bauxite mines had no permission under various environmental laws, MALCO Ltd, a subsidiary of UK-based Vedanta Resources, gave an undertaking to the Madras High Court that it will stop its illegal mining of bauxite in Kolli Hills with immediate effect. The company has operated the bauxite mines without permissions for more than 10 years, said the Salem-based petitioner Piyush Sethia. Sethia heads a voluntary organization called "Speak Out Salem." The petitioners demonstrated that the company's mining lease expired in 1998. Into_salem May 29th, 2009, 02:32 AM SALEM: Shortage in the supply of tapioca tuber is posing a serious threat to the survival of tapioca starch and sago manufacturing units in Salem region.
With farmers switching over to short-term cash crops such as sunflower and maize in many parts of Salem and neighbouring districts, including Namakkal and Dharmapuri, the area under tapioca cultivation is shrinking, creating difficulties to the starch and sago units in procuring the agricultural product.
Salem district alone had over 30,000 hectares under tapioca cultivation in 2006-7. But this had come down drastically to 10,564 hectares in 2007-8. It slightly increased to 15,728 hectares in 2008-9. This had created a shortage in the supply of tuber to starch mills and affected the production.
As a result, the price of starch has increased many folds. The price of a 90-kg bag of starch, which stood at Rs. 1,100 a month ago, is priced at Rs. 1,956 in the fourth week of May. “The price will increase further as the starch units are not getting adequate supply of tapioca tuber,” says Tamil Nadu Sago and Starch Manufacturers Welfare Association President S. Duraisamy.
Tapioca farmers in countries like Thailand, one of the major exporters of tapioca starch, are given subsidy for cultivating the crop. Farmers here are reluctant to take up tapioca cultivation owing to fluctuations in the tuber price and long duration of the crop (eight to 10 months).
Starch and sago industry in Salem region has began to shrink owing to heavy imports since 2000-1. About 300 factories have already been closed. Only about 450 are functioning. “If the remaining starch manufacturing units are closed because of shortage of tubers, the livelihood of a large number of people employed in these units will be affected,” industrial sources here say.

I am wondering how come Namakkal district has more engineering colleges than Salem?
Before Namakkal dt was divided, most of the colleges were saturated in Salem-Tiruchengodu-Namakkal triangle which can attract the students from all the 3big urban settlements of un-divided Salem dt., (Salem, next was Tiruchengodu and next is Namakkal)
After bi-frication, the majority of colleges went to Namakkal hand with the raise of +2 boarding schools. And new colleges also were started. Once Salem was the backward district in education, but not now.

The SEZ of Steel Authority of India Ltd at Salem in Tamil Nadu will be ready by 2010. It will spread over 230 acres. Sail has signed a memorandum of understanding with Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd, an investment banking institution, for forming a special purpose vehicle to develop, operate and maintain the SEZ.
Sail will provide land and offer customised steel products to prospective units that will come up in the zone. These units will manufacture architectural facades, products for railway applications, machines for food processing industry, tubes and pipes, auto components, panels for lifts, etc
Any updates on this?
Now the same gvt has formed, no problem land.... just the SEZ has to progress. Already IT park is doubtful! After SAIL expansion, Jindal expansion, Mettur thermal plant expansion, SAIL SEZ is the major hope for next investment in industrialization.

Inconvenience: Traffic remains congested near the level crossing at Anaimedu in Salem.
SALEM: Vehicle users in the city have urged the Government and the railway administration to initiate steps to construct a rail overbridge in Anaimedu to ease the traffic congestion in the area.
A large number of people use the Attur main road as it connects important places in the State including Chennai, Vilupuram and Kallakurichi.
Heavy traffic
As a result the road witnesses heavy traffic every day and the narrow stretch in Anaimedu causes traffic congestion in the area frequently.
The commencement of rail traffic in the Salem Viridhachalam section has aggravated the problem.
Vehicles queue up on both sides of the road whenever the level crossing is closed.
“The construction of a rail overbridge in the area remains a long-pending demand.
“A large number people travelling between Attur and Salem would benefit if an overbridge was constructed across level crossing in Anaimedu. The authorities concerned should take initiatives to sort out the problem,” vehicle users said.

SALEM: DBS Bank, India, one of the largest financial groups in Asia, has entered the Salem market by inaugurating its branch, the 10th in the country and second in Tamil Nadu, here on Wednesday.
Economy
After opening the branch, its Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Bhasin, told ‘The Hindu’ that a sustained economy and growing number of higher education institutions in Salem and its surrounding districts had prompted the Singapore based corporate banking group to open its branch in Salem, the second after Chennai in Tamil Nadu and the 3rd in southern India.
“We have been planning some more units in other centres in Tamil Nadu,” he further said.
Mr. Bhasin pointed out that the bank would provide a holistic portfolio of corporate and enterprise banking services to cater to the evolving banking needs of various enterprises, operating in Salem and its surrounding districts. In the retail sector, DBS was offering a wide range of wealth management products to suit all, which included services for non-resident Indians and ‘DBS treasures,’ an exclusive wealth management service for its valued customers.
Ability
“We are committed to offering the best financial products and services and look forward to establishing deep and mutually beneficial relationships with our clients here.
Our key value proposition is our ability to provide Asia-specific focus to products, services and outlook,” he further added.
DBS is the first Singapore- based bank in India, having primary operations in Singapore and Hong Kong which contributed 65 and 19 per cent of net profits respectively in 2008.

Good move. Is it like a depot for food products i.e for wholesale ? or like farmers market.
But the location mentioned in the news is not that good. Already Salem Junction-Market-Salem Town-Attur-Vridhachalam line is a single line, 30 acres farmers terminal market with rail on this route will be a congested one.
They could choose some land near Junction, where it has access towards all the railway lines branching from the Salem Junction and access to 4lane NHs also nearer.

Into_salem June 12th, 2009, 04:49 AM The Rs.5.5-lakh work expected to be finished before rain sets in
Fully engaged: Workers under NREG scheme desilting 2 km channel in Chettichavadi, near Salem, on Thursday. —
SALEM: The desilting of the two-km. channel at Chettichavadi near here being executed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) Scheme is in full swing.
A batch of 60 workers, a majority of them women, is working on the channel from a damaged causeway to Pappaneri tank to ensure a free flow of rain water.
The channel has remained silted and full of weeds for long. Chettichavadi Panchayat Union has been entrusted with the job of desilting the channel.
Officials claimed that the administration also had spent Rs 5.5 lakh to desilt the tank recently.
The works, they said, would be completed before the rain sets in. Once completed the rain water could be taken to the tank without any disturbance, which also would end up in raising the ground water level and recharging the wells in the neighbourhood.

tarung June 12th, 2009, 04:38 PM Watershed plan to protect Eastern Ghats
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: Alarmed by the over-exploitation of groundwater and increasing scarcity, the state government has an ambitious plan costing Rs 10,000 crore for watershed development for the eco-restoration of 65 lakh hectares in the Eastern Ghats and promoting sustainable livelihood projects there.
Eastern Ghats are a discontinuous range of mountains and scattered hillocks from Madurai in the south stretching up to the hillocks in Dharmapuri district in the north, covering 17 districts in the state. Drained by the basins of Araniyar, Palar, Ponnaiyar and Cauvery, the eastern ghats have different types of forests with dry deciduous being the dominant vegetation type, which has high economic value. As the number and depth of wells have increased over the years, groundwater exploitation continues unabated despite increasing scarcity and high cost of extraction.
As per the latest estimates of groundwater potential and extraction, more than 70% of the total estimated potential has been exploited as against 40% for the country as a whole. With more pumping of groundwater, the number of districts in the eastern ghats recording more than 20 cm fall in groundwater table per year has increased from five during 1980-2000 to 15 during 1995-2004, officials say. Environmental activists say the situation is worse than what the government thinks. “In 10 years, the groundwater table in parts of Dharmapuri district have gone down from 100 feet to 700 feet and below,’’ says Kumar Ambayiram, an eco-activist.
The valuable mines in these forest ranges have been considerably exploited for iron in the past to the current era of granite and manganese.
The resulting high levels of degradation are severe, with tree cover much lower than the western ghats, which seriously impacts the ability of these ranges to maintain several rivers and the ecology of the surrounding country, officials note.
The state has requested the 13th finance commission to consider a grant of Rs 1,000 crore for the first phase.
Watershed development activities have significant positive spin-off benefits for locals through improvement of agricultural production and boosting their socio-economic status.
According to studies, watershed treatment brings about significant changes in bio-physical aspects such as improved conservation of soil and moisture, improved fertility of the soil, reduced soil erosion and an increase in organic carbon by 37%.
“Eastern ghats certainly need money but it remains to be seen how the money is spent,’’ says Salem-based environmental activist Piyush Sethia. “For 40 years, no one has desilted the water bodies in Salem.
The money has to be fully spent for the benefit of the farmers and tribals and not for building roads for corporate greed or for the mining companies to take out the rich natural resources,’’ says Sethia, who runs a voluntary organisation called ‘Speak Out’.

tarung June 16th, 2009, 04:00 AM South leads in geographic indications for products
Chennai: The famed Kancheepuram silk, Thanjavur paintings, Coimbatore wet grinders and Tirupati laddoos all have one thing in common — they either carry a unique geographical indication (GI) tag or are waiting for it.
Thanks to rising awareness among artisans, farmers and traders about the benefits of a GI appellation, which signifies the uniqueness of a product in terms of its association with a specific region, culture or climate, there’s been a surge in applications at the Geographical Indications office at Guindy, the only one in the country.
In 2007, the number of products registered in India stood at a mere 40; it doubled in 2008; and by mid-2009, another hundred products had received GI clearance. “The mark gives the products a reputation attributable to a place of origin or the area where it is manufactured. With the GI certification, products stand apart and can be distinguished from fakes,” said GK Muthukumar, senior associate at law firm Anand & Anand.
Most of the applications here have come from south India and the bulk of them are for handicrafts, textiles or agricultural products, all targeting the international market. Last year, Karnataka was on top with 22 applications, followed by Tamil Nadu with 14, Kerala (8) and Andhra Pradesh (6). The state with the highest number of pending applications for GI registration is also Karnataka (30), followed by TN (20) and Kerala (18).

Into_salem June 17th, 2009, 04:36 AM For farmers in Salem and Namakkal districts
SALEM: The Agri Business department has established cold storages in six Uzhavar Santhais (farmers’ markets) in Salem and Namakkal districts facilitating farmers to keep their perishable produce safe. The facility has been provided in the shandies at Sooramangalam, Dathagapatti, Ammapet and Attur in Salem district and Namakkal town and Rasipuram in Namakkal district at a cost of Rs 6.05 lakh each.
The storage facility can accommodate two tonnes of vegetables at a time.
With adequate racks and crates provided, more farmers can store their left over produce in the facility, says Deputy Director of Agriculture (Agri Business) M. Subramaniam.
The six shandies get about 10 tonnes of vegetables a day and a large number of people visit these shandies to purchase the produce. The establishment of cold storage in these markets will primarily benefit the farmers coming from far off places, officials say. When the shandies witness heavy arrivals, farmers are forced to sell their produce at throwaway rates.
With the establishment of cold storage, farmers can now store the perishables and sell them on the following day, they add.
The department has a plan to collect 25 paise a kg as charge for keeping the produce in the cold storage.

Nope. So far not even in paper stage and Salem railway division, Salem corporation and gvt looks to be not interested in any such flyover in the city. Just often media alone writes about this... May be in 2020 we can expect the works to be on papers.

I guess it will be foot over bridge as subway is not possible now. They can build a new FOB connecting all the platforms with ramps or escalators for future need. This will de-congest the subway too.
gvijayan June 21st, 2009, 10:17 PM I remember reading a news few months back which stated that the subway will be extended to connect the new platforms. We also discussed it in our forum. Anyways, as we do not see any activity in extending the subway, most probably we might see FOB constructed.

Yes initial discussion was there to expand/extend the subway. But that would be tough as the steps to existing PF1 starts right from subway path itself, so it is not possible i think. But we need elevator to FOBs. Till now other that Egmore they have not installed in other cities.

S. Vydhianathan
The major pending projects in Tamil Nadu are, laying of new lines between Karur and Salem,
The official said in the current financial year, it was planned to complete the Salem-Namakkal portion (50 km) of the Salem-Karur new line project (85 km). For this the zone required Rs.150 crore for purchase of track materials. But, the amount sanctioned in the interim budget was meagre. The zone had written to the Ministry to sanction additional funds.

They have not even purchased the track for this project. So I guess even Ballast and sleepers is not yet purchased!. Better we can use the leveled place as road (as marked in google maps) till they buy it. :bash:

Stalin urges Centre to include Salem, Tiruchi under JNNURM
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: With most of the states having exhausted the allocation for them under the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and a long list of projects for cities awaiting New Delhi’s clearance, deputy chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday urged the Centre to allocate more funds for the state governments to take up infrastructure projects.
He articulated the demands to Dr M Ramachandran, Union urban development secretary, who met him at the Secretariat to discuss ongoing projects under the scheme. Stalin said the fixed allocation for Tamil Nadu by the Centre under the seven-year programme had already been exhausted. The allocation would be enough only for ongoing schemes.
Cities like Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore had already prepared a long list of projects that were waiting for clearance for want of funds. Citing difficulties in getting clearance for new projects, Stalin wanted the Centre to release additional funds in the next phase.
Of the 63 mission cities across the country, only three major cities in TN had been incorporated. Stalin wanted the list to be expanded and other cities like Salem and Tiruchi, which needed an infrastructure fillip because of their growth potential, included along with cities in other states. He also demanded enhanced allocation for small and medium towns.
Ramachandran reviewed the progress of the ongoing Metro rail project being implemented by Tamil Nadu with Central assistance.

Good to see DCM has requested for including Salem and Trichy under JNNURM.
Few infra and transport projects will help Salem for its growth,
1. 4-5 major flyover across Salem Junction-Market-Town-Ayodhiyapattinam railway line.
2. Flyovers at 5 roads Junction & 4 roads signals
3. Revamping the bus transportation in the city
4. Ring road (1/3rd) from Mamangam to Udayapati/Ayodhiyapttinam in the foot hills of Yercaud.

Flyovers at AVR Circle, Kuranguchavadi, Thiruvagavandanoor bye-pass and Kandampati bye-pass should done by NHAI as it cuts the main carriage way of National highway with traffic signals.

Thanks Anirudh for sharing this news. Salem set example in the state in the field of Entertainment and Media long back, with Modern Theatres, early edition of Daily Thanthi, Hi-Quality & Innovative Local TV channels (Polimer and CTN). However it was bad to see our people struggling to tune into Suriyan FM of Coimbatore, and the FM from Kodaikanal. But still we could see a significant number of the callers to these two FM stations are from Salem/Namakkal region.
A new radio station will really be welcomed by the people of Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Dharmapuri and Villupuram districts. Lets hope to see it opening soon.

Bangalore (PTI): Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Sonia has assured a Karnataka delegation led by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to sanction an FM radio station in Shimoga.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, who is in Delhi to attend a two-day BJP executive meeting, called on Ms. Soni and requested that Shimoga, which is an education hub and a tourist centre be sanctioned an FM radio station, official sources here said on Saturday.
Ms. Soni also assured that the Centre was keen to establish more low-power TV transmitter stations in various parts of Karnataka where Doordarshan does not have a reach.
Her ministry would help Karnataka in extending the reach of Doordarshan if the state government brought such a proposal before it.
Karnataka home minister Dr V S Acharya was part of the delegation.

Logesh,
That is one of the vital link road to Gugai area from Shevapet and newly developed city (4roads/central BS/5 roads etc.,) But as you said they can do it till Apsara theatre(no more!) canal.... they should develop the road in the banks as 4 lane or one way to de-congest the fort town roads near Old bus terminus etc.,
As of now all the vehicles bound for Gugai is taking the congested old BS route.
And the road from Rajaji statue to Shevapet is also called as fort main road, they can widen the road for some more KM and build small bus terminus towards Shevapet. Which can surely help in starting city bus service from Shevapet.

Shiva K June 27th, 2009, 03:57 PM Coimbatore-based retailer Indsys Infotech has charted an aggressive expansion plan that includes opening eight franchisee outlets across Tamil Nadu and the launch of an exclusive Apple outlet in the city.
The franchisee chain will consist of multi-brand stores approximately 400 sq ft in size and will be opened in tier-2 cities of the Tamil Nadu like Salem and Madurai. Indsys presently has two stores in Coimbatore, of which one is a 400 sq ft exclusive Toshiba store and the other, a 600 sq ft multi-brand outlet.
“Although the consumer buying sentiments were quite low due to the slowdown, we expect it to improve and retail to grow in the coming months. It is for this reason that we have charted an aggressive expansion plan where we intend to have at least one store in each of the major cities of the state by the end of the current fiscal. In order to meet this target, we plan to tie up with local partners to open franchisee stores in these cities,” said Prabhu Mahalingam, Director, Indsys Infotech.
Also on the cards is the opening of a 1,000 sq ft exclusive Apple store in Coimbatore by the end of September. “The Apple store will be our second exclusive outlet and the first ever Apple store in the city,” added Mahalingam.

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Textiles Dayanidhi Maran has taken up the matter of introduction of hourly shuttle trains from Salem to Mettupalayam with Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. The labour population working in textile units in Tirupur, Salem, Erode and Mettupalayam depended on railways, and the non-availability of frequent trains connecting these towns was choking the textile industry.
He requested the Railway Minister for shuttle trains from Salem to Mettupalayam through Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore and Pollachi to be run every one hour from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. If such shuttle trains were introduced, it would improve the lifestyle of people of these towns and would also help in the movement of raw material and other goods among these towns.
Mr. Maran said a network of such trains was already being run by the Railways in some industrial hubs elsewhere in the country.

kg4129 June 30th, 2009, 09:39 AM Stating that the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) had received tremendous response since its launch, the UPA government on Monday announced the scheme would be expanded by an additional Rs. 50,000 crore; Rs. 25,000 crore of this will be contributed by the Central government.
Addressing a press conference here to unveil the 100-day Action Plan, Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said the new criteria for allocation of funds under the JNNURM would qualify towns with a population of five lakh for funds, instead of the earlier 10 lakh population criteria. The move will add 28 new cities to the existing 65 cities.
Financial assistance
Mr. Reddy said the Ministry had decided to provide financial assistance to metro projects including those in Bangalore (42.3 km at Rs. 8,158 crore) and Kolkata (14.6 km at Rs. 4,874 crore). Work on the Chennai metro (45 km at a cost of Rs. 14,600 crore) and the Mumbai Metro Line 2 from Charkop to Mankhurd via Bandra (32 km at a cost of Rs. 7,660 crore) would be formally launched now.
The metro project for Kochi would also be taken up for sanction soon. The National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi will get connected to the Delhi Metro with a Noida link getting commissioned in August 2009 and the metro in Gurgaon will become functional in January 2010 and get connected to Delhi by June 2010.
Mr. Reddy said the Ministry had sanctioned purchase of 15,220 modern buses for city transport for 61 mission cities. These buses will be delivered by December 2009.
The government will also take up the issue of organising procurement of such buses in 118 cities with a population of two lakh or more.
To provide the metro experience on bus, Mr. Reddy said, modern buses with low floor or semi-low floor and wide doors, vehicle tracking system, on-line passenger information system, LED sign boards, electronic ticketing, and smart cards are envisaged.

The policy note says....
In addition, the State Government is taking necessary action to acquire lands for expansion
and modernisation of Non Metro Airports at Coimbatore, Trichy, Tuticorin and Salem as per
the Master Plans submitted by Airports Authority of India.
The policy note says that the modernisation of salem Airport is initiated by AAI under their Master Plan.. And TN govt is acting on the request for acquiring land for the purpose. Your concern is understandable for making the airport operational, but it is good that Salem does not miss the opportunity of Expansion which will definitely help to sustain it once it becomes operational. Rather, considering the potential for Delhi, and Mumbai from Salem , extension of runway will help in wider aircrafts considering operating Chennai-salem mumbai-Salem Chennai..

In an attempt to attract business tourists, Tamil Nadu Tourism has identified four tourist spots as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences
and Exhibitions) destinations. Sources in the department said the four places are Mamallapuram, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Yercaud.
Already, the sources said, the department had started to enhance infrastructure facilities at the four tourist spots to meet the requirement of such travellers in the coming months.
"These are ideal destinations where travellers can combine business with leisure," an official said. Infrastructure facilities have been enhanced at Mamallapuram. On Monday, state tourism minister N Suresh Rajan inaugurated 40 cottages renovated by the department at a cost of Rs 2.75 crore and 14 bamboo cottages built under the private public partnership basis at the Beach Resort Complex in Mamallapuram.
"The bamboo cottages will also be used to provide ayurvedic treatment for the travellers. In addition, entertainment facilities for children will be installed near the cottages very soon at a cost of Rs 2 lakh," said Suresh Rajan after inaugurating the cottages.
"The service will be extended to all hotels of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) if the patronage is good," he said. Tourism secretary Irai Anbu said that the department was also developing lesser-known tourist spots in the state. "Yelagiri has been given a facelift at a cost of Rs 10 crore," he added.

When JNNURM was launched on 6h December 2005, the stress was laid on cities with population of only 10 lakhs and above (2001 Census). Other than that all the services originate only from the old bus stand, leaving the passengers to take 2 or 3 buses to shuttle between city locations. Even in yesterday's reader's mail in Daily Thanthi someone had requested to introdude bus services between New Bus Stand and Ayodhyapattinam via the bypass road. Salem Junction to Yercaud Foot Hills and few other routes. Taking stock: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam inspecting the site proposed for establishing a botanical garden in Yercaud on Friday. —
YERCAUD: A botanical garden on the sprawling 40 acres of land atop the hill station of Yeracud, to be established at a cost of Rs. 10 crore, will be the largest one in Tamil Nadu.
Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam accompanied by Director of Horticulture P. Chandramohan inspected the site meant for the garden on Friday and said that works would begin in two months. “The first instalment of Rs. 6 crore for the project has already been sanctioned,” he said.
The garden coming up on ‘poromboke’ land would house some of the rarest botanical species, including different varieties of flowers as the hill station’s climate remains salubrious round the year.
“Even the rocks on this piece of land will not be disturbed as they will be provided with aesthetic touch and environmental consciousness,” he said.
The garden, he said, would be well-connected with a new road to other popular spots such as Rose Garden, Ladies’ Seat and its lake. All basic amenities would be provided for the visitors and nature lovers. All these works would be completed within a year.
He also inspected various other development works in Yercaud. Officials including District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, Agriculture Engineering Superintending Engineer Ramakrishnan, Public Relations Officer T. Manoharan and others were also present.
Minister’s assurance
Farmers need not be apprehensive as Tamil Nadu has adequate stocks of fertilizers and seeds for khariff and rabi seasons, Mr. Arumugam said.
Talking to mediapersons after inspecting the site for establishing a botanical garden, the Minister said that there was no question of shortage of fertilizers and seeds in the State as adequate stocks of the same were available.
Besides, fertilizers including potash, DAP, urea etc., were also supplied to farmers through the 2900 Primary Agriculture Co-operative Societies to ensure uniform its distribution all over the State.
He added that quality seeds also had been adequately stocked for the benefit of farmers.
“They need not worry about shortage when they take up farming.”
The Minister issued a stern warning against those who hoard fertilizers and sell at exorbitant prices.

Arul, the original proposal was sent with an estimate of Rs. 25 crores to the central government's tourism department. They told that they cannot afford to spend 25c for this. But it was told in the response from them that only 5c can be granted.
But I think there were second level of talks from Minister VSP's side as the land levelling itself will cost a lot, and hence they shhould have okayed 10c.
