With a revival in domestic air traffic numbers, Paramount Airways, the all-business class airline, has added around 200 flights to its
network in the past two months. It has set a target of 2,500 flights per month by the end of the current fiscal from the current level of 2,000. The proposed capacity addition would take place through adding more aircraft to its fleet and increasing the number of seats.
Paramount Airways’ managing director M Thyagrajan told ET: “We will connect more metros to smaller cities over the next two months.” Starting February, the airline will take a dozen turboprops planes on lease, which will have capacity of around 75 seats each. This will be to cater to smaller cities across the country. The aircraft purchase will be financed by loans from either Exim Bank or European Central Bank. Currently, Paramount has a fleet of five Embraer aircraft.
These turboprop planes will fly to destinations in Jharkhand and Meghalaya, apart from Cooch Behar in West Bengal. Destinations in the south like Pondicherry, Mysore, Salem, Bellary will also be catered to. Eventually, Paramount expects to cover 40 destinations by 2011 from 17 destinations today in the country.
Analysts say the stability in ATF prices, which constitute about a half of an airline’s operational expenses, and a gradual turnaround in domestic traffic have been triggers for Paramount to increase capacity. Domestic aviation traffic has grown 7.8% in 2009 to 4.45 crore passengers compared to what it was a year ago.

There is a 4 screen theater complex in Namakkal, named Cheran, Cholan, Pandian and Pallavan, much before Salem was having ARRS(5 screens). I think now the 4 screen is under Abirami group.

i'm sure it was changed hands several months b4..
Now the above said theaters are called as LMR Complex. each screen named as Screen1,2,3 and 4.
Not sure if it is owned by abirami. but it is now fully furnished and has good AC, can say on par with our BIG Cinemas.
Initially when it was under renovation i thought it is been bought by BIG, since the outer painting had Red colour theme. Later i found BIG didn't buy it.

Arul Murugan January 15th, 2010, 12:27 AM Where footboard travel is a necessity

Risky journey: Passengers travelling on foot board of a bus in Salem. –
SALEM: The increase in the population and inadequate public transport services have led to overcrowding of buses during peak hours. This has forced hapless commuters to travel on footboard, unmindful of the risks.
Almost all the State Transport Corporation and private buses are packed to capacity during peak hours, which is causing serious concern to law enforcing authorities.
The fleet strength of the State Trransport Corporation was not increased to meet the growing demand in the city and various other towns in the district. This has primarily affected students.
It has become very common to see the school and college students travelling on footboard on routes connecting Gugai, Ammapet, Sevvapet, Taramangalam, Yercaud foothills, Kannankurichi, Panamarathupatti and Mallur. The bus crew do not pay attention to those who travel on the footboard, particularly in the private buses.
“The crew are only concerned about the revenue. They do not bother about passenger safety,” citizens point out.
Citizens and various organisations repeatedly asked the State Transport Corporation to operate buses exclusively for the school and college students in the morning and evening hours. Increasing the number of bus services in important routes would help put an end to footboard travel, they suggest.
“The authorities concerned conduct a number of programmes on road safety. But they are yet to make any significant efforts to put an end to food board travel,” people say.

SALEM: The delay in the construction of three bridges across the Tirumanimutharu River channel in the city remains a cause for serious concern.
Thousands of vehicle users have been put to hardship due to the delay.
The Salem Corporation had taken up the construction of bridges at Ananda Irakkam, near old bus stand and at Gun Point as a part of the second phase of Tirumanimutharu River Improvement Project.
The State Government allotted a sum of Rs. 31.5 crore for carrying out the second phase of the project.
The second phase is aimed at lining the bed and bunds of Tirumanimutharu, a major river-turned-sewer that traverses through the heart of the city, 590 metres upstream starting from Anaimedu and 2,210 metres downstream stating from Apsara Theatre.
The construction of bridges was moving at a snail’s pace, putting a large number of vehicle users to hardship.
The traffic was also diverted in other routes in order to carry out the construction.
This resulted in traffic snarls near the old bus stand, first and second agraharams.
The officials had diverted the flow of sewage into various other channels. In the recent rains, all these channels overflowed flooding the residential colonies.
Residential colonies such as Kitichipalayam and Narayanan Nagar are worst affected due to overflow of sewage channels.
Collector J. Chandrakumar inspected the works and inquired about the reasons for the delay.
He directed the officials to speed up the work. “But the works were still moving slowly,” vehicle users point out.
Civic officials earlier claimed that the project would be completed by the end of December.
Officials now say that the works will be completed only by March 2010.

For smooth flow: The delay in construction of a flyover near Kandampatti causes concern. —
SALEM: The inordinate delay in the construction of a major flyover connecting two busy National Highways 47 and 7 here remains a serious cause for concern among vehicle users.
The flyover, which begins at Udhamachozhapuram in National Highways 47, is being constructed as part of the 53-km Salem - Komarapalayam four-laning project, which is executed at a cost of Rs. 470 crore.
The massive structure, if commissioned, will reduce the traffic on the city roads, particularly in Kondalampatti junction, significantly, and enhance traffic safety of the vehicle users. People travelling between Coimbatore and Bangalore would be able to pass through Salem without touching the city roads.
The flyover project, which includes an intersection in Kondalampatti, would be a landmark after its commissioning. The Salem - Komarapalayam four-laning project had commenced about two years ago. The works, including the flyover, were delayed for more than six months. This had put a large number of vehicle users to hardship.
The two national highways witness heavy traffic throughout the day and night. Vehicles coming from Bangalore had to pass through the congested areas, including Kondalampatti. This had affected the traffic safety on the stretch and put people to untold hardship.
Vehicle users urged the authorities concerned to speed up the flyover construction and complete it quickly.
Authorities said that the problems in land acquisition had led to the delay in the construction of the flyover. “We are expecting that the works would be completed within April this year,” they added.

Arul Murugan January 19th, 2010, 12:31 AM ^^
This major Flyover U/C for more than 1.5years, for the first time Hindu paper has written about that. Even now the vehicles from CBE bound for Bangalore bye-passes the city roads, but now almost of the bye-pass road has become much congested at Kondalampatti, Thiruvakavundanoor, State Bank Colony and Kuranguchavadi junctions. This flyover will help to bye-pass Kondalampati and all other 3 junction still it will stay congested with traffic signals.
And flyover starts from Uthamacholapuram! Still it is confusion whether it will be elevated for all the 4KMs or it comes to ground level after some distance!
gvijayan January 19th, 2010, 03:04 AM ^^ Arul, I think it will come to ground level. If you look at the Uthamacholapuram picture that I posted, you can see it going to ground level. Lets wait and see.
Muthukumar January 19th, 2010, 06:31 AM hi friends,
I hope everyone celebrates pongal very nice and enjoyable.when i return from salem, i could talk one person who is working in railways in karuppur station. he was waiting for ed-jtj passenger. from my casual talk with his, i can gather that, our salem division has seeking 2 new trains.
1) salem town to chennai central(via, katpadi)
it will start at 12/12.30(that means in between of WC and alleppy)
2) Erode -Tirupathy passenger.
they r expecting , it will be done on this coming budget.
and i could see the construction of new platforms near the 1st PF. Totally 7 platforms will come, and he told very soon they will start to extend subway upto newly constructing pfs.
its very nice. and he told these 2 new pfs will be used as pit line.
gvijayan January 19th, 2010, 06:37 AM ^^ Nice information, Muthu. They should establish the maintenance facilities at Salem Junction which is very much needed for originating/terminating services.
They should also allocate more fund for the Salem - Karur BG line and make sure it is completed at earliest possible time.

of course vijayan, Maintanance facility is must in salem junction. Everything should be at here only. at any cause, salem junction should not depend upon any station. Loco maintanence, bogi maintanence, water filling in train restrooms, everything should at here only.
Then it will be very good.
As far as i know,
salem -tirunelveli intercity day time express should need,
covai-mysore day time exp(janshdapthi) need,
no rajdhani and shadapthi running in this stretch.
trivendrum-newdelhi rajdhani(via,covai,salem,bangalore,secundrabad) should need.
trivendrum-mumbai Garibrath(via,covai,salem,bangalore) need
bangalore-puducherry daily night exp need.
if possible, Ernakulam-chennai shadapthi can establish
salem-chennai weekend exp need
chennai-covai weekend exp
2681 should re-route from egmore and make it as daily

Economic Times reported that Steel Authority of India Limited production target for 2010-11 fiscal is likely to be 10% more as compared to 2009.
Mr SK Roongta chairman of SAIL said that we are in the process of finalising the production targets for fiscal 2010 to 2011, which is expected to be higher than the production of 2009 to 2010 at least by 10%."
Mr Roongta said that we are not commissioning any new facility this year except for our stainless steel unit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. At Salem, we are creating steel making capacity with electric furnace facility and also increasing capacity of our hot strip and new cold rolling mills.
He said that the steel making at Salem shall be 0.2 million tonnes and hot rolling mill capacity will be more than 0.4 million tonnes after the commissioning of the unit in June this year. Salem is expected to double its capacity of hot and cold roll mill by June 2010 after backward integration of its steel melting unit.
Mr Roongta said that the stainless steel units at Salem are coming up with an investment of around INR 1,800 crore. He expected the stainless steel industry to grow between 12% to 15% rate annually with prices of steel remaining stable at the current levels.

Good to see the 1800crore investment new melting shop will be commissioned june month.
But no official info. on SAIL SEZ so far.
Arul Murugan January 19th, 2010, 04:37 PM Yet another false promise for Salem-Karur a decade long project:
Major works are nearing completion in the Salem-Namakkal section of the new Salem-Karur broad gauge line works. The Southern Railway is hoping to procure expensive track materials after receiving funds in the aftermath of the Railway Budge for the next fiscal so that the section could see completion of work at least by December this year, according to the Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan.
Interacting with the media after an inspection tour here on Tuesday, Mr. Krishan said that the Southern Railway was optimistic that the project would receive sufficient funds to ensure that enough material was procured and the Salem-Namakkal section would be commissioned by December. The work on the Namakkal-Karur section would be over by May 2011.
"We are capable of meeting the requirements of the public and travellers of the region and would try to expedite the project,’’ he replied to a query on the continued delay plaguing the project.
They are going to procure the tracks, sleepers and ballast with funds which are going to come from 2010-11 budget only. Then having worst track record, why every time they promise the same dead line and these medias also put the same news two weeks once. RM going to give big halwa for this project in coming budget.
gvijayan January 20th, 2010, 04:29 AM http://dkn.dinakaran.com/pdf/2010/01/20/20100120a_005104007.jpg
Salem - Namakkal to be completed within 2010. He must be kidding. There is no progress at all for the past several months in this section. Rails have not even been procured. Sufficient Funds have to be allocated in the upcoming budget. In all probability the ministry will allocate only few crores in this budget also.
Arul Murugan January 20th, 2010, 05:13 AM hi friends,
and i could see the construction of new platforms near the 1st PF. Totally 7 platforms will come, and he told very soon they will start to extend subway upto newly constructing pfs.
its very nice. and he told these 2 new pfs will be used as pit line.
Very nice information. But we need a early morning departure train from Salem and late arrival train and not the train between West Coast and Allepey express.
I am confused with PFs to be used as pitlines. Platforms is for train arrival and departure and it cannot be used as pit line (which will have pit running between the tracks for maintenance).
Salem Town or Salem Junction-Chennai Central Express via Katpadi likely to be green signal in coming budget. I got a positive reply from SR DDPG regarding this train.
I hope Coimbatore-Tirupathy express, Coimbatore-Sengottai or Rameshwaram express and Salem Town-Chennai Central express gets through in coming budget.
My Mail to SR DDPG
Dear Sir,
I kindly request to convert the 6085 as day express train between Salem and Chennai Central with conventional rakes.
There is lot request from Salem to have a direct day train to Chennai in early morning from Salem and late evening arrival at Salem. The request appeared in media for past one year is referred below in this mail.
Now 6085 involves very complex MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) rake sharing arrangement, but we request to use the timings of 6085 between Arrakonam-Jolarpettai and a new slot between Chennai-Arrakonam(MA19 & AM16 can continue from MMC (Moore Market Complex) as usual) and Jolarpettai-Salem for Salem-Chennai express with an conventional rake.
6085
Chennai Central MAS dep 16:55
Arrakonam AJJ 18:15 dep 18:20
Katpadi KPD 19:35
Jolarpettai JTJ 20:50 dep 20:55
Salem Junction SA 22:35
If the train can go upto Salem Town 22:55, it will be much helpful for the people in core town of Salem.
6086
Salem Town (05:30) if needed.
Salem Junction SA dep 05:40
Jolarpettai JTJ dep 07:25
Katpadi KPD dep 08:40
Arrakonam AJJ dep 09:55
Chennai Central MAS arr 11:30
This train with conventional rake will reduce little crowd in Yelagiri express and Coimbatore-Chennai Intercity express and it will fulfill the long demand of Salem people to have day train to state capital Chennai. And small stations between Salem and Chennai central can have stoppages, the train can either have RSA(Rake sharing arrangement) with Yelagiri express or Coimbatore Intercity rake for maintenance either at BBQ (Basin Bridge Yard-Chennai) or at Coimbatore.
Railways can consider this needed request for relieving ever growing crowds in day trains like Yelagiri express and Coimbatore Intercity express in Chennai-Katpadi-Salem-Coimbatore sector.
Please consider this request and we hope southern railways will take care of this much needed train.
Thanks and regards,
Arulmurugan.N.J

Reply from SR
Dear Sir,
This has reference to your email. In this connection, the remarks received from the Operating Branch of this Railway are appended below for your kind information.
"The section between Jolarpettai – Katpadi – Chennai is highly saturated with line capacity utilization of 147.2%. Hence, running additional trains on this section is operationally not feasible at present. However, keeping the heavy demand in mind, the possibility of introduction of additional day train between Salem-Chennai via Katpadi will be examined."
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,

I guess this would be up gradation of existing village roads to SH! It will have two level crossing (crossing Erode Mainline railway tracks and Steel plant freight line)

* Stairs to Kiliyur Falls at a cost of Rs. 27 lakhs. This is a very good move. The falls could now be reached only after some adventurous trekking and is now done only by some youths. Children and old people just go upto some point where the path gets worse and return back with disappointment. With this project, the falls will become easily accessible to everyone.
* A sum of Rs. 1.37 crores to be spent on improving the local roads in Yercause Panchayat Union.

Hi Arul,
This is Saravanan. I am very happy to became a member of the SSC Forum.
You all are giving more contribution to this form and I really proud of you all.
Salem bye-pass is starting from Kurankuchavadi (NH-7) to Seelanayakkanpatty (NH-7) (leave NH-68 Ayothiyappattinam Road), in this the road was laid which was not meet the expressway standards,
i.e.
1) no road should directly connected to the expressway, and it should be connected through service line only. Where as in Salem, Seelanaikanpatty Bye-pass(except Nammakkal road), kondalampatty Bye-pass, Kandampatty bye-pass has no service road.
2) the width of the median is also not standard one and also it is not adequate or separate lane (at the end of take turning) to take right turn or U turn. That is the reason oftenly occurs fatal accidents in Kandampatty Bye-pass.
3) Salem has lack of flyovers at the junction of Kondalampatty Bye-pass, Kandampatty Bye-pass, Tiruvakavandanoor Bye-pass, AVR Roundana, Korankuchavadi, Steel Plant Road (Opp to Sagoserve).
4) Volume of the vehicle is very high and the infrastructure of the Bye-pass road is very poor. Particularly in evening, we can see heavy traffic in all the bye-pass juncions.
In order to avoid that all the problem NHAI and TN Govt & Salem Corporation take initiation to form a new bye-pass road ie Salem Outer Bye-Pass Road. This road is start from Panamarathupatti Pirivu road (in Namakkal Road-NH 7)-Periyur (Utthamacholapuram) (in Sankari Road NH 47)-Panankadu (in Siddarkoil Road)-Steel Plant Road (Via Salatthampatty: Between ESI Hospital & Old Suramangalam)- and
1) Extended directly to Dalmia (To be laid newly) (or)
2) Reddypatti bye-pass to Mamangam (Via- Jagir Reddypatty) (or)
3) Directly to Steelpant road (Opp to Sagaserve).
The above said new bye-pass road will solve all the problem in Salem City.
Also this will generate a trementous growth in Salem.
This will be like Chennai Inner Ring Road & Chennai Outer Ring Road.
And we can extent the salem city, since Comparing to Other cities Salem has less urban area, but population density is high.
And Salem will be the first city in Tamilnadu has 2 bye-pass roads and etc etc.

And Salem will be the first city in Tamilnadu has 2 bye-pass roads.

Arul Murugan January 22nd, 2010, 04:30 PM very nice and good
but more no.of CBSE schools should come with in salem city and no.of colleges should come with in salem city.
Anna university and Govt.polytechnic should come with in city limit..
At any cost, salem peoples should not depend for education to chennai, covai and trichy, but neighbourhood districts should come for salem for education purpose.
I feel like the big schools/colleges should be outside the city. 15-30min travel for the schools are getting so common nowadays in most part of the TN. You are very right about top colleges, Chennai/Coimbatore and Trichy only have very good reputed colleges as these cities got well established in education long ago.

Into_salem January 24th, 2010, 01:48 AM Land and financial problems derail the project
The cost of the project after a few revisions is now pegged at Rs. 658.85 crore
Railway authorities are expecting around 40 per cent of the funding over next two years
KARUR: Lack of financial support and the resultant sluggishness in executing groundwork seems to be the major handicaps hindering the quick completion of the Salem-Karur new broad gauge line works.
Pending land acquisition problems, technicalities that need waiver of regulations and too much of an optimism in expecting huge grants over the next year from the Railway Ministry militate against meeting the revised target of commissioning the project fully by May 31, 2011.
The cost of the project has seen a few revisions and is now pegged at Rs. 658.85 crore.
So far a sum of Rs. 250 crore has been spent while another Rs. 70 crore has been spent from out of the funds made available in 2008-09. During 2009-10 a sum of Rs. 56 crore has been spent from out of the budgetary grant of Rs. 65.99 crore.
Total length
The total length of the project is 85.15 km. The progress of the project can be gauged from the fact that six major works are in various stages of completion, while 102 of the 131 minor bridges have been completed. Work on only 12 of the 45 rail over bridges have been finished while 16 rail under bridges of the total 21 have been completed. Besides them, 12 level crossings and eight stations are coming up under the project.
However, the unfinished agenda seems a bit more bothering. Shifting of High Tension and Low Tension power line crossings remain to be completed at 20 locations. Construction of one RoB between Salem and Namakkal on the NH 7 is held up for want of proper traffic management by the National Highways Authority of India while an estimated 30,000 cubic metre of earth work has not been taken up due to delay in land acquisition near Rasipuram in Namakkal district.
Pending land acquisition problems have derailed work on at least six RoBs – at Parapatti in Salem district, Rasipuram, Namakkal town, Vagurampati, Parali Road, Kumaripalayam (all in Namakkal district) and near the Vangal station location.
Approval of the Salem Yard Plan is in jeopardy as the Railway Board condonation of yard gradient (1 in 100) is being awaited.
The Railway authorities positing commissioning of the project fully by May 2011expect the Railway Ministry to release Rs. 25 crore additionally for the current fiscal, Rs. 128 crore for 2010-11 and Rs. 96 crore for 2011-12.
That being the case it is anybody’s guess how the top Southern Railway officials are expressing the hope that the Salem-Karur new BG line works would be completed by May 2011, ahead of the funds release.
Authoritative sources concede that it is going to be a tall order completing the works in slated time as the Southern Railway authorities are expecting approximately 40 per cent of the funding over the next two years to complete the job.

Into_salem January 24th, 2010, 01:51 AM Hi Arul,
This is Saravanan. I am very happy to became a member of the SSC Forum.
Welcome Saravanan to the Salem SSC and happy posting.
Arul Murugan January 24th, 2010, 05:13 AM Saravanan welcome to the forum.
Hi Arul,
3) Salem has lack of flyovers at the junction of Kondalampatty Bye-pass, Kandampatty Bye-pass, Tiruvakavandanoor Bye-pass, AVR Roundana, Korankuchavadi, Steel Plant Road (Opp to Sagoserve).
Yes the present Salem bye-pass is no more to be called as bye-pass. It very well turning like Chennai's Inner ring road or Madurai's old bye-pass on NH 7 for Salem's size and traffic. It is neither expressway or Indian standard NHAI's 4 lane road. All those traffic signal points needs flyovers.
And Salem will be the first city in Tamilnadu has 2 bye-pass roads.
Exactly that would help for the Vehicles to bye-pass the Salem and that outer ring road could be built in expressway standards so that in future there will be no need to make another outer road. But as we all know these kind of ring roads for will take 60-70 years to reach tier II cities as even the metropolitan cities in India just now started building express ring roads.
Jagadeesh R January 24th, 2010, 07:20 AM ... ..

(1).What nonsense Mr. Marriappan is saying, The Boeing 737 series aircrafts are still alive in aviation industry then how come he is saying Boeing 737 aircrafts are scrapped from the operations.
(2). Who told him that Salem Airport is running on loss. The Salem Airport became operational just 2 months back only, how come they are justifying that the flight operations in Salem is going on loss in such a short time. And which airline industry is not showing much interest in investing in Salem Airport further (Is he indirectly mentioning Kingfisher Airlines?)
But, (i).Kingfisher Airlines decided to continue the Chennai-Salem-Chennai operations for its summer schedule as well.
(ii) The Paramount Airways taken Salem Airport in consideration for operating its flight in future.
(iii). The Salem Air, a Salem based firm (part of Salem impex) is ready to operate flight from Salem Airport in future, currently it is building an workshop shed inside the airport for maintain its small aircraft which is going to use for its flight training institute.
We don’t know why Mr.Marriappan:storm: is continuously giving scrap news for media, and this media is also publishing the same with out interviewing the same with concerned one.

Same news appeared in TM also, but before publishing some statistics media should check it. KF is going to continue it service for summer also the patronage is more than 60% overall for the flight so far. So the collection for KF should be more than 1lakh per day for past 60days. Hi Arul,
My opinion is not to create a separate thread for this projects RIGHT NOW, because as Loggy told we don’t have any information other than news paper advertisement and web site content.
We can wait for some more time, and we can try to collect some information directly from the construction company and we publish the same in SalemJilla.com other than in SSC. So that these projects will easily get focused by our Salemites who are settled out side Salem and having plan to buy a house in their native.

Into_salem January 26th, 2010, 04:37 AM Re-laying of service roads begins
Making it motorable: State Highways department is re-laying the Periyar Bridge service road in Salem.
SALEM: The State Highways department has initiated a comprehensive programme to re-lay the service roads of Periyar Flyover here in the city.
A sum of Rs. 50 lakh was allotted for the programme and works had begun on Sunday.
The service roads got damaged due to heavy traffic.
Almost all the road users who travel between the eastern and western parts of the city use these service roads. Besides, people coming to the Government Medical College Hospital also use the service roads.
A large number of people living in Salem district and neighbouring Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Namakkal districts depend on the hospital for their health care needs.
Huge potholes and craters emerged on these roads, which were being used by thousands of vehicle users.
The potholes led to a number of road accidents involving two-wheeler riders. Following widespread complaints from the public, the State Highways department initiated the programme and allotted funds.
The service roads located near Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, Kalpana Theatre, Government Hospital and Ponni Supermarket would be re-laid.
The department had planned to complete the works in 10 days, officials said.

Arul Murugan January 27th, 2010, 12:49 AM Salem Railway Division registers growth
Special Correspondent
SALEM: Salem Railway Division has recorded positive growth during the current financial year for the period from April 2009 to December 2009 when compared to the same period last year, said Divisional Railway Manager P.N. Ram.
Unfurling the National flag here on Tuesday, Mr. Ram said that the overall earnings of the division stood at Rs. 300 crore, which was 17 per cent higher than the previous year. “However, we are short by 12 per cent from our target of Rs. 341 crore,” he said.
Efficiency
He asked the employees to increase the performance efficiency index so that an increase in earnings on all fronts could be achieved.
Asking the employees and particularly the staff and officials concerned with train operations to perform their duties sincerely for ‘safety and punctuality’, the DRM said that efforts should be sustained to increase passenger amenities on trains and at stations besides providing new facilities.
During the current year passenger amenity works had been completed at a cost of Rs. 7 crore while works for an additional sum of Rs. 4 crore were being undertaken.

KARUR: The Textile Testing Laboratory functioning here is getting equipment worth around Rs. 1 crore. The new equipment, some of which is imported, would serve the textile export community in assessing and certifying physical, chemical and ecological parameters of the yarn and textile samples provided by the exporters for testing.
The laboratory was established in Karur in 1996 with just a handful of equipment to study the physical and chemical parameters of yarn and textiles and gradually evolved to do ecological testing since 2003. Some of the factors that come under the scanner in the laboratory included yarn count, strength, appearance, twist, weight and construction in the physical category while the chemical parameters being tested here include those on all type of fastness, dimensional changes and fibre composition, according to Deputy Director of Textiles Committee V. Velmurugan.
Most importantly, the Laboratory carries out tests to assess the ecological parameters such as tests for 24 types of banned amines, formaldehyde, presence of heavy metals, pesticides, penta choloro phenols and the like, he adds.
Since it is a Central Government institution, this ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited laboratory charges just a nominal fee to assess the samples being provided by the textile exporters. The lab’s work has earned it the distinction of being the country’s only buyer-nominated inspecting and testing agency in the public sector, Mr. Velmurugan observes.
New equipment including gas chromatography mass spectroscope costing Rs. 38 lakh for testing banned amines including carcinogenic agents that might cause cancer and high pressure liquid chromatographer worth Rs. 23 lakh have been imported from Germany. Similarly, an ultra violet visible spectroscope, to test the presence of formaldehyde, has been imported from there at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh.
A high pressure thin layer chromatographer worth Rs. 19 lakh has been bought from Switzerland.
An ICI Box Pilling equipment for undertaking fabric pilling tests has been procured at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh while a matindale abrasion tester has been added to the repertoire of the lab at a cost of Rs. 1.55 lakh, Mr. Velmurugan informs.
Both yarn and fabric samples are being tested at the laboratory here.
One remarkable feature is that the laboratory is ready for issue-specific testing that the export industry immensely requires.

Arul Murugan January 29th, 2010, 12:36 AM Minimum support price for medicinal plants promised
Staff Reporter
SALEM: The State government will take steps to fix the price of medicinal plants for encouraging farmers to take up cultivation of such plants on a larger scale, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said here on Thursday.
Inaugurating a State-level seminar on cultivation of medicinal plants and exhibition, he said that efforts would be taken to announce minimum support price (MSP) for different types of medicinal plants. If prices in open market go below MSP, steps would be taken to procure medicinal plants through the government’s Medicinal Plant Farms and Herbal Medicine Corporation Limited.
The country had a huge demand for medicinal plants. Currently, the demand was estimated to be around 3.20 lakh tonnes per year. The size of the world market for medicinal plants was around Rs.3,000 crore and was growing fast. The country exported medicinal plants valued at Rs.1,250 crore.
Alternative method
Earlier, medicinal plants were obtained from forests. As a result, a number of varieties were on the verge of extinction. The best alternative method to protect the rare varieties was to cultivate them properly. This would also help farmers enhance their income, he said.
Medicinal plants were being cultivated on over 10,000 hectares in Tamil Nadu.
A majority of these plants were exported, he said and called upon the farmers to adopt modern methods of cultivation.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare S. Gandhiselvan said the country ranked second after China in export of medicinal plants. With alternative medicine gaining popularity in India and abroad, the demand for medicinal plants had increased.

loggy January 29th, 2010, 02:28 PM The NH47 highway which is India’s one of the important highway which connects NH7 to the cochin sea port. The road which starts from Salem connects Coimbatore, Cochin and other parts of Kerela.
The 4lane works which was started a couple of year before. The Stretch from Salem to Komarapalayam is almost completed except one of the two flyovers near magudanchavadi. The sankagiri by-pass is completed and opened to traffic. This eases the car travellers, trucks and other point to point bus service by avoiding the narrow and congested sankari town road. This also helps to reduce the traffic inside sankari town itself and ICL area. The river bridge and a flyover near komarapalayam is completed and open to traffic.
The entire stretch seems to have a good alignment and service roads in needed places. Although a flyover near Ariyanoor Junction is missing, which is a much deserved one.
A toll gate is about to come up near vaigundam just before sankagiri. The offical inaguration is expected to be in next month and the toll gate may start collecting tolls after it.
The stretch from Komarapalyam to Chengampalli was already inaugurated and open to traffic last year. Chemgapalli to Coimbatore and further stretches are yet to start the 4lane works.

Very poor article!
Translation
1. Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem people fought hard to get Bangalore-Coimbatore Intercity but the train was extended to Ernakulam
2. Chennai-Egmore-Erode express was extended to Coimbatore and then to Kerala/Karnataka Mangalore
3. Erode-Chennai Yercaud express extended to Hyderabad
4. Coimbatore-Chennai Cheran express extended to Ahmedabad
5. Salem-Chennai Egmore extended to Mumbai Dadar
6. Salem-Yeshwanthpur passenger extended to Shimoga
Yenga poyi mudikarathunu theriyala! They didn't term it as RSA atleast :wallbash:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That news item suggest the extension of following trains to Salem
1. Chennai-Arrakonam express (I think they meant JTJ-AJJ exp). This is valid one
2. Yelagiri express (I say no, Yelagiri express is over crowded commuter train, not need to extend that beyond Vellore district)
3. Bangalore-Dharmapuri pass (again not needed)
4. Tirunelveli-Erode pass (may be useful)
6. Trichy-Erode pass (Not needed, let us wait for SA-KRR line to be done)
7. Coimbatore-Erode (there should be express train, not pass b.w CBE and SA, so this extension is not needed)
8. Mangalore-Coimbatore FP (Not at all needed)
9. Cannanore-Coimbatore FP (again not needed at all)
10. Shoranur-Coimbatore FP, 11. Thirussur-CBE FP, 12. PGT-CBE pass. All these train are not needed to go beyond CBE towards CBF atleast.
The writer of the article has suggested the extension of most of the train from CBE/ED to SA, but no comments of extension of SBC/YPR-SA, VRI-SA pass to ED/CBE. Surely such things are not needed at all!

Into_salem February 2nd, 2010, 04:24 PM CHENNAI: The government has revised the Hogenakkal Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project cost from Rs.1,334 crore to Rs.1,928.8 crore.
Of the revised cost, the loan component of the Japan International Cooperation Agency will be Rs.1,585.6 crore; the Minimum Needs Programme’s component Rs.307.48 crore and urban local bodies’ share Rs.35.72 crore.
Using the Cauvery as the source, the project is aimed at providing drinking water to people of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts in three municipalities, 17 town panchayats and 6,755 rural habitations over 18 panchayat unions, according to an order issued by the State Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department last week.
The cost has been revised due to a number of factors such as the redesign of water main lines branching from the master balancing reservoirs and the consequent changes in the type, class and size of pipes.
Introduction of intermediate booster and allocation of maintenance staff and increase in power consumption are among the other reasons.
The government has also sanctioned Rs.318.35 crore towards the cost of operation and maintenance for five years subject to the condition that the amount collected from beneficiaries by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, the executing agency, will be deducted while releasing funds to the TWAD Board.
The project has been divided into five packages.
Last week, a work order for Rs.237.18 crore was issued by the Board to IVRCL Infrastructures and Projects to cover the first package, covering the works of raw water intake, water treatment plant, water transmission main of raw water and treated water for 11.5 km, master balancing reservoir and the establishment of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

It should be noted that 2677/78 Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity express and Ernakulam-Trichy Tea Garden express have rake sharing arrangement. Tea Garden express is a night train so SL coaches are needed! And more over 2677 involves 11hours journey from end to end so SL coaches are needed for elderly people/women who cannot travel long distance in sitting class. So there is nothing arrogant or partiality in this!
But in above mentioned trains,
salem tirunelveli is needed ,
salem -kozhikode intercity is needed(or atleast passenger),
salem-tcr pass is also needed,
but i dont know how arul said these are all not needed except sa-ten

All those trains mentioned are meant for Coimbatore-Kerala connection and most of the trains are running full and no need to extend it beyond CBE and it involves need of rakes and maintenance which is impossible. And there is no such huge demand from Salem to Kerala towns/cities, present via train are more than sufficient. Salem mainly needs dedicated express/passenger train to Coimbatore, Delta, Cuddalore/Thiruvanamalai and South TN apart from one day train to Chennai. And really I don't see the need to start/extend Kerala-CBE trains to Salem or Erode or even Tiruppur.

SALEM: Demands for the upgradation of landing aids, expansion of surface area and infrastructure and the introduction of cargo handling facilities at the Salem airport have gained momentum.
After 16 years of hibernation, the airport has become active with Kingfisher Airlines operating a flight between Chennai and Salem from November 15, 2009.
But facilities at the airport remain inadequate. The 6,000-feet runway that can handle smaller aircraft such as ATRs, which Kingfisher is operating now, needs to be expanded. The installation of sophisticated computerised systems for operational functions is also a need.
Highly placed sources told The Hindu that at present the airport was depending on an outdated beacon-type navigational system. Flights could not land at Salem in two instances owing to foggy conditions. As fly-by-wire systems now rule the sky, the installation of computerised navigational systems such as instrument landing systems has become imperative.
Cargo facilities
Salem District Small and Tiny Industries Association president K. Mariappan has sought air cargo handling facilities in Salem. He said several non-resident Indian entrepreneurs have evinced interest in such facilities.
The district administration conducted a survey and identified 563 acres of land adjacent to the airport for its expansion and the lengthening of the runway to 12,000 feet.
As the airport had remained inactive for long, the Department of Civil Aviation did not take up any expansion work. “The team of experts from the Civil Aviation Department is yet to undertake an inspection of the proposed 563 acres of land, which the district administration has identified for expansion,” Mr. Mariappan said.
He wanted the Finance Minister to allocate at least Rs. 250 crore in the coming budget to acquire the 563 acres of land. Hangars and warehouses should be constructed. “Two business houses have planned to set up hangars at Salem airport for aircraft maintenance since costs in Bangalore are very high,” he said.
An industrialist has mooted a proposal to open a helicopter pilot training centre here.
Arul Murugan February 5th, 2010, 02:01 AM Salem-Chennai flight charges reduced. Looks service also extended for summer schedule.

Arul Murugan February 9th, 2010, 12:40 AM CM urged to take steps to industrialise Salem district
Special Correspondent
SALEM: The Salem District Small Scale and Tiny Industries Association (SADISSTIA), has urged the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to expedite steps to industrialise the district, which at present, stands at 17th place in the State.
The Government had taken steps to open new industries at a staggering investment of Rs. 46,000 crore in the past 4 years. Thirty-seven MoUs had also been signed with various firms in the State. After M. K. Alagiri became the Union Minister southern districts had also received Rs. 8, 000 crore investment where Videocon, Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres had been asked to set up their units.
But Salem district, which had been given funds for development activities, however, was not given any major industry so far either by the State or by Centre.
After the establishment of the Salem Steel Plant in 1971 and a few chemical industries in Mettur, no major industry had been allotted to Salem district by the present Government.
The district had been allotted IT Park. But since the global recession had hit the industry, none but one had preferred to open their shops here. Moreover the IT industry also could not provide more employment opportunities to rural youth. The State should provide alternative opportunities to Salem district, which of late had been witnessing an all-round growth in its infrastructure needs.
Hence, association president K Mariappan said, the Chief Minister should come forward to establish automobile industry and its allied units for the district’s overall industrial development.

Arul Murugan February 9th, 2010, 12:43 AM ^^
Don't know how far the rank 17 is true. May be in investment? engineer mariappan can only tell us.
But why there are worried about Alagiri's initiative in south districts? Here we have one more minster, why can't he openly tell he has not brought any major big industries to Salem after Steel plant and chemical industries way before 1990's.

1.43 lakh families brought under Kalaignar’s health insurance scheme
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
METTUR: As wished by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi that Tamil Nadu should emerge as a leading hub in health sector in the country, the Health Department has undertaken an ambitious plan to upgrade its medical facilities in the State, said Health Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam here on Tuesday.
Declaring open a new building for Mettur Government Hospital and buildings for maternity homes, Primary Health Centres and Sub Health Centre at Attur, Jalakandapuram, Edapadi, Ilampillai and various other places in the district, the Minister at a function pointed out that the State had spent a sum of Rs. 1,951 crore to construct new buildings for its health infrastructure in 2006-07.

The department also had taken steps to recruit 6,118 doctors and 6,556 nurses in its hospitals to fill the vacancies.
“As a whole, we have appointed 28,998 health personnel so far to manage our massive health care infrastructure,” he pointed out.
Drawing attention to the Chief Minister’s welfare schemes, the Minister said that under the Kalaignar’s health insurance scheme, 1.43 lakh families had been registered so far and among which 1.11 lakh had received identity cards.
A sum of Rs. 117.31 crore had been spent for the medical needs of 35,435 persons under the scheme so far. A total of 3,000 children also underwent free heart surgeries.

As per the election promise, the government had sanctioned Rs. 950 crore as aid to 18.33 lakh mothers during delivery in the last 3 years.
Mr. Panneerselvam said that these schemes had not only received pats from the Centre and other States but also had improved the standard of life in Tamil Nadu.

Right now, it is too early for additional flights. Though because of the present timing, a new player may pitch in with morning timing. For that we will have to wait till summer schedule.

gvijayan February 10th, 2010, 06:55 PM ^^ Dear Into, Salem Corporation's 'Ezhilmigu Salem 2010' plan which includes the above fly-overs was just a mere eye-wash. They just spent some money to the graphics designers to draw those images, and conducted a mega meeting in the city more than 2 years back explaining their plans. But none of them has not seen any light.
And also the corporation does not seem to be proactive enough to prepare at least a rough plan for JNNURM. I am not sure, if the Mayor, Commisioner & Co at least are aware that Salem is included in the scheme. A bunch of in-effecient people sitting in such positions and ruining the development of the city.
Madurai gilli February 10th, 2010, 07:04 PM ^^ Hey, It will be better if SR allots Funds to create a modern new state of terminal for Salem Junction..
Salem is 5th largest city in TN which is a dt headquarters and also rlwy division HQ..The terminal has to be changed..Demand the salem Politicians to demand for that..

Dear Vijayan,
I wonder if Salem was included in JNNURM Cities..A proposal was there to include Salem,Trichy,Tirunelveli and Erode..But MKS told recently that it is impossible this year..But I dono what happened in the mean-time..
It'll be nice if Salem got included in JNNURM Cities so that the City infrastructure can well be improved for the much-needed Industrialization in this belt...B/w Can I know what is the population of the salem city ?
chennaidesi February 10th, 2010, 10:39 PM Yes JNNURM looks like a nice scheme if properly implemented and done. Currently it is the only solution for Tier1 and Tier2 cities Infra needs.

Muthukumar February 11th, 2010, 06:19 AM hi Bala,
My hearty welcome to see you in ssc forum. i hope ur contribution will be good in this forum.
Muthukumar February 11th, 2010, 06:22 AM Dear MDL sir,
Junction entrance building is not attractive and not spacious. this is one major drawback. this building entrance should change as a modern , very spacious and very grand looks. so it will be very attractive. it should be like chennai/Bangalore or atleast covai.
bala-salem February 11th, 2010, 07:52 AM hi muthukumar,
yes, i do agree with u upgarading salem jn.considering a multi level carparking would be a good idea, considering the traffic and cities growth in the next 10 years.
this would definitely help the smooth flow of vehicles in and around salem jn.

bala-salem February 11th, 2010, 07:56 AM how about widening omalur main road, between 4rds to 5 rds stretch into 6 lane?it has to be done sooner or later if the authorities wants to plan sensibly the development of SALEM.are our authorities responsible enough to think this?
Muthukumar February 11th, 2010, 01:44 PM hi Bala,
Widening the existing road as 6 lane in between 4 rds and 5 rds towards omalur side is not possible atleast 5 yrs in future. because lots of buildings should be removed. i thing political interfere is there. so it wont be possible as far as i know.

Salem is very well included in JNNURM scheme.
What MKS told was about the funds which couldn't been allotted to Salem last year.
This year they should offer some funds.
