But it is good to see stops on Cherry road, Ramakrishna road, GH etc., are given to privates for advertisement.

NEW DELHI: Steel giant SAIL is set to start this week the process to select a partner for its exclusive SEZ in Tamil Nadu amid global and domestic firms evincing interest in the joint venture project.

"On March 19, 2010, SAIL will start evaluating the Expressions of Interests it is presently receiving from reputed, competent developers for setting up a steel-sector Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near its Salem plant in Tamil Nadu," a Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Among the global firms, South Korean giant Posco's subsidiary Posco E&C is said to be in the race for setting up a unit in the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) SEZ. However, this could not be confirmed. :cheers:

"The SEZ project is proposed to be implemented as a joint venture, in which SAIL will hold 26 per cent of equity with the remaining held by the JV partner selected from eligible bidders who have experience in development and management of major infrastructure projects," the official said.

The government had in January 2008 cleared the steel maker's proposal to set up a SEZ in Salem, Tamil Nadu, where it operates a stainless steel plant.

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) will soon have a joint venture (JV) partner for its 300-acre steel special economic zone (SEZ) in Tamil Nadu. The state-run steel giant has initiated the process of scrutinising the expressions of interest (EOIs) received for the project.

BSE-listed IVRCL Infrastructure & Projects Ltd is one of the major real estate companies that is interested in it. Yesterday was the last date for receiving the EOIs. SAIL did not give the details of the companies which submitted EOIs.

The SEZ, likely to come up near the company's Salem steel plant, is proposed to be implemented through a JV, in which SAIL will hold 26 per cent and the remaining by the JV partner. SAIL has already acquired the land, but it would require the final approval from the government after the formation of the JV.

"As India continues to attract investment in new capacity, exports of stainless steel are also likely to increase substantially in the next decade. There is a specific tender committee that is looking after the bids received,&" an executive from SAIL, who did not want to be identified, told Business Standard.

Proximity to the Salem steel plant would facilitate seamless supply of stainless steel at competitive prices. "Besides, Salem steel plant and other SAIL plants can also supply mild steel items which may be required by the SEZ units to offer a wider range of products,&" the executive added.

Last year, SAIL signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with IL & FS to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for developing the SEZ. However, the partnership failed due "lack of funding as the partners backed out&". KPMG is the advisor for SAIL's SEZ project.

The Salem plant produces austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and low-nickel stainless steel in the form of coils and sheets.

Coimbatore: Salem Division of Southern Railway has stepped up the ongoing efforts to fight global warming by replacing incandescent lamps with Compact Fluorescent Lamps ( CFLs).

According to an official release, a total of 5,975 bulbs have been replaced in the entire Salem division so far.

In Salem Railway Colony, a total of 965 bulbs have been replaced, resulting in an approximate energy savings of 16,979 units per month.

Following is the energy savings by a similar exercise: Erode Railway Colony (2,857 bulbs replaced, 46,424 units of energy per month saved); Coimbatore Railway Colony (404 bulbs replaced, 7,329 units per month saved); Podanur Railway Colony (1009 bulbs replaced, 17,178 units per month saved). Mettupalayam Railway Colony (581 bulbs replaced, 10,292 units per month saved). Karur Railway Colony (159 bulbs replaced, 2,950 units saved a month).

The effort of greening of the environment has been extended to stations also.

In Salem Junction Railway station, 170 numbers of CFLs have been provided, resulting in an approximate energy savings of 2,500 units a month.

In Erode Railway Station, 110 CFLs have been provided, (1617 units saved a month) and in Coimbatore Railway Station 200 CFLs provided, resulting in a saving of 2940 units a month.

Indian Railways, (Ministry of Railways) in association with C-Quest Capital, Philips and Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Ministry of Power) have initiated an energy efficient lighting project for railway employees residing in Railway Quarters.

Namakkal: As the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched 3G services in Namakkal District, its 2G customers can change to this updated service free of cost, D.Varadharajan, its Chief General Manager, told reporters here on Thursday.

He said 12 specially-designed base ‘transreceiver' stations had been set up to provide high quality 3G services.

In total, 12,000 connections could be given from these stations.

He elaborated that 3G offered data speed at 2 MBPS to 3.6 MBPS.

The 3G services were available under pre-paid and post-paid modes.

New customers would be enrolled in the promotion plan in which local audio and video calls within the BSNL network is charged 30 paise per minute and STD audio and video calls 50 paise per minute.

Customers could access mobile television under the 3G services by activating the GPRS facility in the handset.

The General Manager of the Salem BSNL A.Sajahan was present on the occasion.

Again the above explanation fits here. I guess these flyovers atleast need 30crores, where corporation will go for 15crores? Only state gvt can give the money. And surely unless we have MoSR getting 50% of railways is very difficult though division HO is there in Salem. I am expecing by 2020 we will have flyover there.

This is good suggestion from Dinakaran, and even in our "SCIDSF" meeting we have discussed on this but we got information that existing garbage at Kitchipalayam yard will not be cleaned once Chettichavadi solid waste management yard will be in operational.


5. Kumaragiri and Kitchipalayam lakes should be cleaned and boat house has to be established for recreation purpose and corporation can get good revenue from that.

This is every year or once in 3months from Salem. But nothing happened solidly so far.

Sure, much needed one. We lost many trees on Sarada college road expansion, but now there were not planted again. Salem bye-pass road, Omalur road, Sarada college, Suramangalam roads should be made green.

I see Fort corporation boys/girls schools and Gugai schools are highly competing with the private schools in the city. And fort corporation school is getting more and new buildings.

This project is going utter waste, the phase I is poorly maintained and changing the river into drainage prior to 2000. And phase II is progressing very slow. If it is not maintained propely surely in 2050 another 400crores of money has to be dumped in this drainage to restore the river. :bash:

I think until UGD is implemented, this cannot be done!

This should be very true. Statistics says 2009 Salem was last in corporation in approving house construction in the city limits. Then many of the construction should be going without approval from corporation.

IMHO, now these private group is keeping the city much cleaner than before. They should be continuing otherwise city roads will become dump yards without garbage removal.

Also corporation official told during that time one dedicated tunnel is planned for the major roads in the city to accomodate cables undergroud...
Looks 2010 laterpart will witness widespread digging in the city roads...

'இந்த அனல் மின்நிலையம் வரும் 2011ல் பயன்பாட்டிற்கு வரும். அதன் மூலம் 14.40 மில்லியன் யூனிட் மின்சாரம் கூடுதலாக உற்பத்தி செய்ய முடியும்' என, அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
புதிய அனல்மின்நிலைய கட்டுமான பணியை பி.ஜி.ஆர்., நிறுவனம் சிறிய கான்ட்ராக்ட் நிறுவனங்களுக்கு பிரித்து வழங்கியுள்ளது. அதில், ஒரிஸ்ஸா, பீகார், மஹாராஷ்டிரா பகுதியை சேர்ந்த 500க்கும் மேற்பட்ட தொழிலாளர்கள் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். கட்டுமான பணியில் உள்ளூர் தொழிலாளர்களை சேர்க்ககோரி மேட்டூரை சேர்ந்த பல்வேறு கட்சியை சேர்ந்த தொழிற்சங்கத்தினர் பி.ஜி.ஆர்., லிமிடெட் நிர்வாகிகளிடம் கோரிக்கை விடுத்தனர்.

கடந்த மாதம் மேட்டூர் ஆர்.டி.ஓ., வேலு முன்னிலையில் கான்ட்ராக்ட் நிறுவன அதிகாரிகள், அரசியல் கட்சியினர் கலந்த கொண்ட கூட்டத்தில் 100 உள்ளூர் தொழிலாளர்களை வேலைக்கு சேர்ப்பது என உடன்பாடு ஏற்பட்டது. அதன் பின்னர் கான்ட்ராக்ட் நிறுவனம் உள்ளூர் தொழிலாளர்களை வேலைக்கு எடுப்பதில் காலதாமதம் செய்ததாக தெரிகிறது.அதனால், நேற்று காலை உள்ளூர் தொழிலாளர்கள், அரசியல் கட்சியினரோடு சேர்ந்து, உடனடியாக தங்களை பணியில் சேர்க்ககோரி புதிய அனல்மின்நிலைய நுழைவாயில் முன் மறியலில் ஈடுபட்டனர். அதனால், நேற்று தொழிலாளர்கள் கட்டுமான பணிக்கு செல்ல முடியாததால் நேற்றும் கட்டுமான பணி பாதித்தது.மின் தட்டுப்பாடு நீடிக்கும் நிலையில் வரும் 2011ல் மேட்டூர் புதிய அனல்மின்நிலையம் பயன்பாட்டிற்கு வரும் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டது. உள்ளுர் தொழிலாளர்களை பணியில் சேர்ப்பது தொடர்பாக கட்சி தொழிற்சங்க நிர்வாகிகளுக்கும், கான்ட்ராக்ட் நிறுவனத்திற்கும் அடிக்கடி மோதல் ஏற்பட்டு கட்டுமான பணி பாதிப்பதால் புதிய அனல்மின் நிலையத்தில் மின் உற்பத்தி துவங்க காலதாமதமாகும் அபாயம் ஏற்ட்டுள்ளது.

Corporation Budget

Salem Corporation had never done anything good out of the budget. They only propose things in the budget. Most of the fund allocations are said to be for improving the sanitory conditions of the city, but the same gets worse every year and no one knows where the allocated amount is going to.

The Mayor should be proactive enough to get a rough City Development Plan as part of the budget, to be forwarded to the centre for getting JNNURM funds as soon as possible.

Every year they create a lot of hype in the budget, but nothing gets executed. Last year also they proposed to make Trichy Road one-way, and create a parallel alternate road for the other way of traffic, and we all know it was never talked about after the budget meet.

This time, it is the elevated Omalur road from Tiruvalluvar Statue to Kuranguchavadi Junction.

With no doubt, both these proposals (Trichy Road and Omalur Road) will definitely be worth every paise, and help improving the traffic conditions on these two arterial roads a lot better. But we want something to happen in reality, and not something dreamt just during the budget session.

Arul, I think they will consider the specifications and will make sure the height is okay for trains to move under.

I was very surprised to see this work happening there. Few weeks back when I passed through this place I do not recall any work happening there. It seems to be a very great improvement. Hope to see trains moving from Salem to Namakkal at least by mid next year as promised.

Also, its a relief that the BG line goes below the road, which would avoid traffic blockings on this busy road. Though, the NH47 re-alignment with the huge trumpet interchange will take majority of the load it currently handles, this stretch will still continue to be busy with the local traffic, city buses, and mofussil buses bound for Tiruchengode, Erode etc.

Salem Government Medical College to be upgraded on-par with AIIMS in Phase-I

NEW DELHI: In order to meet revised cost of construction, the Government today allocated an additional Rs 5,535 crore for six upcoming AIIMS-like
institutes and upgradation of 13 existing Government Medical Colleges.

The additional fund was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters.

The CCEA had earlier approved Rs 3,975 crore for the scheme and with the additional funds, the total outlay now stands at Rs 9,307 crore.

The new institutions or upgraded facilities in the existing medical colleges would provide tertiary health care facilities under the 'Pradhan Mantri Gram Swashthya Suraksha Yojana'.

The projects are spread over 19 locations in the 16 states.

The new AIIMS-like institutes will be completed by the end of 2012 at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh.

The upgradation components in Phase-I includes government medical colleges at Trivandrum, Salem, Bangalore, Kolkata, Jammu and Srinagar, NIMS Hyderabad and B J Medical College, Ahmedabad.

The PMSSY was initially started in March, 2006, with the object of correcting regional imbalances in availability of affordable or reliable tertiary health care services and also to augment facilities for quality medical education in the country.

The PMSSY has two components in its first phase - setting up six AIIMS-like institutions and upgradation of 13 existing government medical college institutions.

^^ Its good to see that Salem Government Medical College has been included in the upgradation by the centre. Even though the Salem Medical College was established long back in the state, it hardly saw any improvements. The seats allocated to the institution was less compared to the seats in other relatively new colleges.

At least we are hearing one good news in the education front for Salem and lets hope it gets materialized soon.

^^ Arul, There is an ROB already constructed and open to traffic on NH7. The rail track will be on ground level and the road is over the rail line.

But why can't he follow-up on whatever he orders the Corporation and make sure it is done on time, instead of waiting for ordering the corporation in the next meeting?

This is a very poor attitude of someone in such a great power.

Again, they will tell that they send proposal to the state government for constructing fly-overs at Four and Five roads junction. But god only will know if they will really send a proposal. Even if they send, they will not push the State Government, and the proposal will find its place in a dust bin. If they CAN NOT do something worth, they SHOULD NOT tell anything.

They are just trying to make the public of Salem fool by giving such false promises.

What is the difference between the current super specialty hospital project and this news item ?

எதிர்காலத்திலாவது சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் வளர்ச்சியில் அரசியல் கட்சியினர் மற்றும் அதிகாரிகள் கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டும் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டம் 14 மாவட்டங்களை உள்ளடக்கி 862 கி.மீ., தூரம் பரப்பு கொண்டதாகும். சேலம் கோட்டம் வழியாக நாள்தோறும் 120 பயணிகள் ரயில் மற்றும் 40 சரக்கு ரயில்கள் இயக்கப்படுகின்றன. சேலம் வழித்தடத்தில் நாள்தோறும் 75 ஆயிரம் பயணிகள் பயணம் செய்து வருகின்றனர். கடந்த 2007ல் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டம் துவக்கப்பட்டபோது, ஆண்டு வருமானம் 230 கோடி ரூபாயாக நிர்ணயம் செய்யப்பட்டது. 2007-08ல் நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்ட இலக்கை காட்டிலும் 60 கோடி ரூபாய் கூடுதல் வருவாய் கிடைத்தது.



கடந்த 2008-09ல் பயணிகள் கட்டணம், சரக்கு போக்குவரத்து உள்ளிட்டவற்றின் மூலம் 300 கோடி ரூபாய் வருவாய் கிடைத்தது. கடந்த 11 மாதங்களில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் வருவாய் கணிசமாக உயர்ந்துள்ளது. 2009 ஏப்ரல் முதல் 2010 ஃபிப்ரவரி வரை சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் மூலம் 14 லட்சத்து 69 ஆயிரம் டன் சரக்கு ஏற்றுமதி செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதன் மூலம் 104 கோடியே 20 லட்சம் ரூபாய் வருவாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது. இதேகால கட்டத்தில் கடந்த ஆண்டு கிடைத்த வருவாயை காட்டிலும் 31.10 சதவீதம் அதிகம். பயணிகள் போக்குவரத்து மூலம் 228 கோடியே 50 லட்சம் ரூபாய் வருவாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது. இது கடந்த ஆண்டை காட்டிலும் 4.90 சதவீதம் அதிகம். ரயில் டிக்கெட் பரிசோதனை மூலம் 2 கோடியே 6 லட்சத்து 91 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது. இது கடந்த ஆண்டை காட்டிலும் 14 சதவீதம் அதிகம். கடந்த 11 மாதங்களில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் மூலம் 368 கோடி ரூபாய் வருவாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது. இது கடந்த ஆண்டை காட்டிலும் 14.08 சதவீதம் கூடுதல் வருவாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது.



சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டம் துவங்கப்பட்டு மூன்று ஆண்டு ஆகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு ரயில்வே பட்ஜெட்டிலும் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் தேவைகள் புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. புதிய ரயில்களை இயக்குவது குறித்த அறிவிப்புகள் இல்லாதது பல்வேறு தரப்பினர் இடையே அதிருப்தியை ஏற்படுத்தி வருகிறது. புதிய ரயில் திட்டங்கள் உள்ளிட்ட அறிவிப்புகள் இல்லாதபட்சத்திலும் கூட சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்ட வருவாய் ஆண்டுக்கு ஆண்டு உயர்ந்து கொண்டே போகிறது.

இன்றைய காலக்கட்டத்தில் தெற்கு ரயில்வே நிர்வாகத்தின் கீழ் செயல்படும் கோட்டங்களில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டம் கணிசமான வருவாயை ஈட்டி வருகிறது. சேலம் கோட்டத்தின் முக்கிய ரயில் வழிப்போக்குவரத்து தடமாக கருதப்படும் சேலம்- கரூர் அகல ரயில்பாதை பணியை விரைந்து முடித்தல், சேலம்- விருத்தாசலம் வழித்தடத்தில் கூடுதலாக எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயில்களை இயக்குதல், சத்திரம் மார்க்கெட் ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனை விரிவுப்படுத்துதல் உள்ளிட்ட பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் பட்சத்தில் சேலம் கோட்டத்தின் ஆண்டு வருமானம் 500 கோடி ரூபாயை சர்வ சாதரணமாக எட்டும் என்று ரயில்வே அதிகாரிகள் கருதுகின்றனர். வரும் காலத்திலாவது சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தில் ரயில் போக்குவரத்தை விரிவுப்படுத்த அரசியல் கட்சியினர், ரயில்வே அதிகாரிகள் உள்ளிட்டோர் உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே பொதுமக்களின எதிர்பார்ப்பு.

சேலம்: சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தில் 9 கோடியே 56 லட்சம் ரூபாய் மதிப்பில் நிரந்தர ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகம் கட்டும் பணி துரிதப்பட்டுள்ளது. புதிய அலுவலகத்தை நவீன தொழில்நுட்பங்களுடன் அமைக்க சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்ட கட்டுமான பிரிவு அதிகாரிகள் ஆர்வம் காட்டி வருகின்றனர்.



கடந்த 2007ல் சேலத்தில் தனி ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகம் துவங்கப்பட்டது. ரயில்வே நிர்வாகத்தின் அதிகாரப்பூர்வ அறிவிப்புக்கு பிறகு ஒரு ஆண்டு காலம் வரை சிறிய அலுவலகத்தில் ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகம் செயல்பட்டு வந்தது. 15 மாதங்களுக்கு பிறகு சூரமங்கலம் ரயில்வே காலனி அருகே 2 கோடி ரூபாய் செலவில் தற்காலிக ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகம் கட்டப்பட்டது. ஆனால், ரயில்வே அதிகாரிகளுக்கான காலனி, ரயில்வே கோட்டம் விரிவாக்கம் மற்றும் நிரந்தர ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகம் ஆகிய வசதிகள் இல்லாத காரணத்தால் பல்வேறு தரப்பினர் அதிருப்தி அடைந்தனர். கடந்த ஆண்டு 11 கோடியே 42 லட்சம் ரூபாய் மதிப்பில் சூரமங்கலம் பகுதியில் புதிய ரயில்வே காலனி அமைக்கும் பணி துவங்கப்பட்டது.



தவிர, 10 கோடி ரூபாய் செலவில் சேலம் ரயில் நிலையத்தில் புதிய யாட் அமைத்து, விரிவாக்கம் செய்யும் பணி மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. இப்பணிகள் 90 சதவீதம் நிறைவடைந்துள்ளது. இப்பணிகளை தொடர்ந்து சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தின் நிரந்தர அலுவலகம் கட்டும் பணி துரிதப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. சூரமங்கலம் ரயில்வே காலனியில் 172 சதுர மீட்டரில் புதிய கட்டிடம் கட்டும் பணி நடந்து வருகிறது. எதிர்காலத்தில் நடைமுறை சிக்கல் ஏற்படாது வண்ணம், அனைத்து வசதிகளுடன் புதிய கட்டிடம் கட்டப்பட உள்ளது. புதிய ரயில்வே கோட்ட அலுவலகத்தில் அதிநவீன தொழில்நுட்ப வசதிகள் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளன.

I really doubt, for setting up of division, the cost was 22 crores, till 2009 10 crores was spent for this and for 2010-11 only 50 lakhs was alloted, so still 11.5 crores is pending which will easily take minimum 5years to complete the division set up which includes the office building.

Salem: The Annual Credit Plan for 2010-11 for Salem District launched by District Collector J.Chandrakumar on Friday envisages assistance to over seven lakh people under the priority sector lending programme.

The plan, prepared by the Indian Bank, the lead Bank of the district, has projected an outlay of about Rs. 1,618 crores, which is 14 per cent higher than the plan of last year.

The first copy was received by M.Vijayakumar, Lead District Officer, RBI, in the presence of P.Manimekalai, Deputy General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Salem, and R.Mahadevan, Deputy General Manager, Indian Bank, Salem.

The lion's share of the plan goes to agriculture. As much as 60 per cent (Rs. 980 crores) is allocated for this sector.

Of that crop loan alone works out to about Rs. 777 crores.

Minor irrigation

While minor irrigation gets about Rs. 19 crore, land development will get Rs. 13 crore, farm mechanisation Rs. 59 crore and plantation and horticulture Rs. 9 crore.

The outlay for agriculture is Rs. 108 crore more than last year.

Among the allied activities, as usual dairy development gets about Rs. 30 crore, poultry Rs. 14 crore and sheep rearing Rs. 7 crore.

The industries sector gets Rs. 169 crore and other priority sector gets Rs. 468 crore.

More than Rs. 257 crore has been projected for various Government-sponsored programmes.

The plan envisages liberal credit assistance to women and tribals who are forming self-help groups with the objective of savings and thrift and improving their income level by taking up economic activities.

An outlay of as much as Rs. 121 crore is projected for the SHG-direct linkage, it was pointed out.

It is planned to disburse Rs 677 crores in rural areas and more than Rs. 940 crore in semi-urban and urban areas.

Vital task: Workers engaged in survey work for the underground drainage system in Mitta Pudur in Salem on Saturday. -

Salem: The works for the collection system of the Underground Sewerage System of the Salem Corporation are in full swing.

According to official sources, Salem Corporation constituted in 1994, has a total area of 91.34 sq.km.

The total population of this civic body is 7.72 lakh.

About 70 million litres a day (MLD) of sewage and sullage water is being let into the Thirumanimuthar from this Corporation area which causes pollution.

The State Government accorded administrative sanction for Rs. 149.39 crore to implement this system.

The works that have started pertain to the package I and III (Suramanglam, Hasthampatti and Ammapet).

Now the levels are taken for laying of pipelines and construction of manholes.

There is an emerging trend towards organising for a social cause. In my opinion this is totally unprecedented. For a society that is divided along caste and religious lines and can't get its act together for a common cause due to this reason which could very well have been the reason d'etre for the downfall of this once mighty nation, this new movement of coming together is really heartening and portends a brighter future for the state and the country.

Though I am for integrated bus stand for any city, the present bus stand got congested much now, on Sunday nights Chennai/Bangalore buses occupies the vast space of such big central bus stand. We can only expand the present bus terminus by purchasing the land from private owners i.e the land between Central BS and Ganesh Mahal, I think it will be impossible for corporation to buy such huge land.

We can go for satellite bus terminus at Kitchipalayam on Chennai bye-pass, this road is going to be 4 lane as the part of NH68 project, that position is easy access for buses coming from Madurai, Trichy, Karur, Thanjavur, down South, Chennai, Thirivanamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chidambaram. Kanchipuram, Vellore and Kallakurichi.

Let Namakkal, Attur buses enter into city as they are more of city buses than long distance mofusil buses. And the present bus stand can be for Coimbatore/Erode/Tiruppur/Kerala/Bangalore/Dharmapuri/Hosur/Mettur.

In simple NH7 towards Omalur and NH47 route buses can use present central BS and NH 7 towards Mallur, NH 68 and SH 18 route buses can use Kitchipalayam bus terminus if built.

May be this move only will make TNSTC to make Satellite city buses station at South East i.e Kitchipalayam. Surely it is a good suggestion from Tamil Murasu.

And above news have some statistical information! It states no. of government buses operated from Salem Central BS is 1500 to destination like Coimbatore, Erode, Mettur, Dharmapuri, Bangalore, Chennai, Krishnagiri, Attur, Namakkal, Harur, Madurai, Trichy, Ramanathapuram etc., It includes 200 spare buses too. Apart from this 300 private buses are operated by private operators to Erode, Mettur, Tiruchengodu, Attur, Namakkal etc.,

Totally 2000 services are operated from Salem Central BS daily. It means 2000 arrival and 2000 departures! Even 25 people per bus arrival+departure will make the central BS to be used by 1 lakh people in 24hours. :nuts:

Still we call this bus stand as new bus stand 20years rolled off and BS got congested in no time. What a planners! :lol:

Already I saw many of new buses in Feb month end itself on Salem-Erode, Salem-Chennai, Salem-Madurai routes, I wonder what is this gimmick again. Anyway no mention about SLF buses. Thanks to transport dept. :nuts:

^^ Arul, the news states that the new buses are going to have different type of seating and windows than the normal buses. Lets see what they are going to introduce. I think the windows will be of vertical slide (as in the VPM divn buses), as against the traditional horisontal slides that SLM division has (except for the buses transfered from VPM division in the past).

Teams formed to carry out the work in the district

The identification work would be carried out in two phases

The government has planned to construct three lakh concrete houses

ERODE: The enumeration work to identify beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme began in Erode district on Monday.

The district administration has formed teams to carry out the work in all parts of the district.

Each team comprises three members - a village administrative officer, makkal nala paniyalar and a village assistant.

Senior officials from the rural development and revenue departments will supervise the activities of the teams. The work would be carried out in two phases.

In the first phase, the team members will identify the families living in huts with thatched roof and collect all relevant details from them. The family members would be asked to provide necessary documents including pattas for verification.

In the second phase, the teams would photograph the family members and the hut and collect necessary documents.

The government had planned to construct three lakh concrete houses for the people living in huts under the scheme in 2010-11.

The scheme, however, would not be executed in the village panchayats, which would be merged with the Erode Corporation.

Collector R. Sudalaikannan appealed to the officials to verify all the required details while carrying out the enumeration work.

He also wanted the people to co-operate with the officials for the effective implementation of the scheme in the district.

Tirupur: Onion farmers in the district who now have very little facilities to hold back their stock till prices scale up can rejoice as a cold storage is all set to come up shortly at Pongalur to stack onions soon after the harvest.

Joint Director of Agriculture L. Sankararaj told The Hindu that the facility would be set up by Tamil Nadu Agriculture Marketing Board at an estimated outlay of Rs one crore and it was expected to be commissioned before the end of the first half of 2010-11 financial year.

The cold storage would have the capacity to hold 50 metric tonnes of onion at a time.

The Onion cold storage was expected to be a big boon to the small and marginal farmers since it would protect them against making distress selling of their produce when confronted with shrinkage of demand and lack of storage capabilities. “At present, onion is raised over 3,000 ha in the district,” Mr. Sankararaj said.

From the consumer point of view, the cold storage would ensure stable onion prices. Mr. Sankararaj said that cold storage structure would be provided with reinforced cement concrete (RCC) roof embedded with adequate insulation materials to prevent build up of high temperature inside.

The onion being a delicate commodity to store since it was high in water content, special storage process would be followed to ensure desired results.

Only the onions whose outer scales were adequately dried either in the field or through artificial means would be allowed inside for stuffing. Stacking heights would be maintained as per the norms and plastic crates would be used to store the produce to avoid pressure bruising.

ஓமலூர்: ஓமலூர் அருகே விமான நிலையத்திற்கு நிலம் எடுப்பதற்காக நில அளவைக்கு சென்ற அதிகாரிகளை பொதுமக்கள் முற்றுகையிட்டனர். ஓமலூரை அடுத்த காமலாபுரத்தில் 1989ம் ஆண்டு விமான நிலையம் துவக்கப்பட்டது. அதற்காக காமலாபுரம், சிக்கனம்பட்டி மற்றும் அதை சுற்றியுள்ள கிராம பகுதியில் இருந்து 125 ஏக்கர் நிலம் எடுக்கப்பட்டு, விமான நிலையம் அமைக்கப்பட்டது. இதற்காக ஏராளமான விவசாய நிலங்களும், வீடுகளும் அழிக்கப்பட்டடன. நிலம் கொடுத்தவர்களுக்கு அரசு சார்பில் வேலைவாய்ப்பும், நஷ்டஈடும் வழங்கப்படும் என்று அரசு சார்பில் கூறியதால் பொதுமக்களும் நிலம் கொடுத்தனர். ஆனால், அரசு அறிவித்தபடி நிலம் கொடுத்தவர்களுக்கு அரசு வேலையும், நஷ்டஈடும் வழங்க வில்லை. இது சம்மந்தமாக மேட்டூர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு நடந்து வருகிறது. இந்நிலையில், காமலாபுரம் விமான நிலைய விரிவாக்கத்திற்காக காமலாபுரம் விமான நிலையத்தை ஒட்டியுள்ள தும்பிப்பாடி, பொட்டியபுரம், சிக்கனம்பட்டி, காமலாபுரம் ஆகிய ஊராட்சி எல்லைக்குட்பட்ட பகுதியிலிருந்து 560 ஏக்கர் நிலம் எடுக்கப்போவதாக தகவல் பரவியது. நேற்று காலை ஓமலூர் வருவாய் துறையைச் சேர்ந்த சர்வேயர்கள் ஐந்துக்கும் மேற்பட்டோர், தும்பிப்பாடி ஊராட்சி எல்லைக்குபட்ட குருவரெட்டியூர் பகுதிக்கு சென்று, 'விமான நிலைய விரிவாக்கத்திற்கு தேவைப்படும் நிலத்தை அளக்க போவதாக' நில உரிமையாளர்களிடம் கூறி விட்டு, நிலங்களை அளக்க முயன்றனர். தகவல் அறிந்த காமலாபுரம் விமான நிலையம் அருகில் வசித்து வரும் 200க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பொதுமக்கள், நிலங்களை அளக்க சென்ற சர்வேயர்களை முற்றுகையிட்டு, 'நிலங்களை அளக்க கூடாது. ஏற்கனவே நிலம் கொடுத்தவர்களுக்கு அரசு வேலை, நஷ்டஈடு போன்றவை வழங்க வேண்டும். தற்போது ஒரு விமானம் மட்டுமே காமலாபுரம் விமான நிலையத்திற்கு வந்து செல்கிறது. அதற்காக வேண்டி விமான நிலையத்தை விரிவாக்கம் செய்யக்கூடாது' என, கூறினர். இச்சம்பவம் குறித்து சர்வேயர்கள் ஓமலூர் தாசில்தாருக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தனர். சம்பவ இடத்திற்கு வந்த தாசில்தார் ராமகிருஷ்ணன், முற்றுகையிட்ட பொதுமக்களிடம், 'கோரிக்கைகளை மனுவாக எழுதி கொடுக்கும்படியும், அந்த மனுவை உடனடியாக உயர்அதிகாரிகளுக்கு அனுப்பி நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். அதுவரை நிலம் சர்வே செய்யவில்லை' என்றும் கூறினார். அதையடுத்து பொதுமக்கள் அனைவரும் கலைந்து சென்றனர். அதனால், விமான நிலையம் பகுதியில் பரபரப்பு ஏற்பட்டது.

I think it is okay to enter Erode news in this section because, Erode is part of Salem IT Region (as per ELCOT IT park plan). Also Erode is customer for Salem Airport given the fact that they don't want to travel backwards to go to Chennai. Even when I traveled, I saw many people from Erode also were using Salem Airport.

Though our Salem Central Bus Stand is nearly completed 20 years, Still the town buses are mentioned it as New Bus Stand (புதிய பேருந்து நிலையம்), Even in the inside & front side of the bus stand, the name is displayed as Central Bus Stand very clearly (மத்திய பேருந்து நிலையம்). So, Salem Corporation and TamilNadu Govt. take initiation to change the bus stand names as,

Salem New Bus Stand (புதிய பேருந்து நிலையம்) -----> Salem Central Bus Stand (மத்திய பேருந்து நிலையம்)

சேலம்: சேலம் ஐ.டி., பார்க் உள்கட்டமைப்பு பணிகள் நடப்பதை மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் சந்திரகுமார் நேரில் ஆய்வு செய்தார். சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் தகவல் தொழில் நுட்ப பூங்கா மற்றும் சிறப்பு பொருளாதார மண்டலம் அமைவதற்காக தமிழக முதல்வரால் 2007ம் ஆண்டு அடிக்கல் நாட்டப்பட்டது. அதன் பின் வேளாண் துறை அமைச்சரால் பணிகள் துவக்கப்பட்டது. உள்கட்டமைப்பு பணிகளுக்காக 9.44 கோடி ரூபாய் நிதி ஒதுக்கீடு செய்யப்பட்டு, வரும் ஜூலை இறுதிக்குள் பணிகள் முடிக்க திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. சுற்றுச்சுவர், சாலை அமைத்தல், பைப் லைன் போடுதல் உள்ளிட்ட பணிகளை கலெக்டர் சந்திரகுமார் ஆய்வு செய்தார். பணிகளை நல்ல முறையிலும், குறிப்பிட்ட காலத்துக்குள்ளும், சாலையோரம் மரங்களை அதிகளவில் நடவும் கலெக்டர் அறிவுறுத்தினார். தலைமைப்பொறியாளர் மணிமாறன், திட்ட மேலாளர் வாசுதேவன் ஆகியோர் உடனிருந்தனர்.

I happend to meet the project manager onsite. Also I discussed with the Elcot personnel. Our Minister is very keen on starting the building and gave directives to our State IT minister as well. That is why the work is in full swing.

As that I know of, the building tender will be finalized by April/may 2010. Let us wait and see.

It is said the traffic from Chatiram to Ramakrishna road will ply below the flyover. And I wonder how they have space to build in Chamundi complex side as the road is much narrower.

And as usual it is hands of TN gvt. Atleast election fever should get nod for this project.

சேலம், ஏப். 6: சேலம் அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியில் போதுமான வசதிகள் இருப்பதால் எம்.பி.பி.எஸ். பட்டப்படிப்புக்கு மாணவர் சேர்க்கையை அதிகரிக்கலாம் என்று ஆய்வுக் குழுவினர் தெரிவித்தனர்.

சேலம் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிக்கு 2010-11 ஆம் கல்வியாண்டுக்கு அனுமதி அளிப்பதற்கான ஆண்டு ஆய்வு செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை நடைபெற்றது. ஆய்வுக் குழுத் தலைவர் டாக்டர் மகேஸ்வரி, உறுப்பினர் டாக்டர் சண்முக சுந்தரம் ஆகியோர் இதற்காக சேலம் அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி மருத்துவமனைக்கு வந்தனர்.

பின்னர். அவர்கள் மருத்துவமனையில் உள்ள அவசர சிகிச்சை பிரிவு, எக்ஸ்ரே பிரிவு, குழந்தைகள் பிரிவு உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு பிரிவுகளுக்குச் சென்று ஆய்வு நடத்தினர். மருத்துவமனைக்கு வரும் புற நோயாளிகள், உள் நோயாளிகள் எண்ணிக்கை ஆகியவை குறித்து அறிந்தனர்.

இதையடுத்து கல்லூரி மாணவர் விடுதி, நூலகம், ஆய்வகம், வாகனங்கள் போன்றவற்றையும் இக் குழுவினர் ஆய்வு செய்தனர்.

இது குறித்து கல்லூரி முதல்வர் டாக்டர் கனகசபை கூறியது:

மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிக்கு அனுமதி வழங்குவதற்கான இந்த ஆண்டு ஆய்வின்போது, மருத்துவ மாணவர் எண்ணிக்கையை அதிகரிப்பது குறித்தும் ஆய்வு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. சேலம் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியில் இப்போது ஆண்டுக்கு 75 மாணவர்கள் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்படுகின்றனர். ஆனால் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியிலும் மருத்துவமனையிலும் 150 மாணவர்கள் படிப்பதற்குத் தேவையான வசதிகள் உள்ளன.

குறைந்தபட்சம் 100 மாணவர்களாவது சேர்ந்து படிக்கத் தேவையான வசதிகள் இங்கு இருப்பதாக இக்குழுவினர் தெரிவித்தனர். இக்குழுவின் அறிக்கை டாக்டர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மருத்துவப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்துக்கு விரைவில் இவர்கள் அளிப்பார்கள்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து மாணவர் எண்ணிக்கையை உயர்த்துவது குறித்து இந்திய மருத்துவ கவுன்சிலுக்கு கல்லூரி சார்பாக தனியாக விண்ணப்பம் அனுப்பப்படும் என்றார் அவர்.

‘Education alone will not help to start new enterprises'

SALEM: Periyar Institute of Management Studies (PRIMS) of Salem Periyar University opened an Entrepreneurship Development Cell on Thursday.

Inaugurating the Cell, K. Mariappan, president of Salem Productivity Council, pointed out that to start new enterprises; just education alone would not help.

Those who were in the industry for generations alone could expand their areas and open new ventures.

Hence the education system itself should be suitably changed to cater to the needs of young entrepreneurs.

He further claimed that with the entry of universities from abroad, the forex earning of the country would be going up.

For industrial growth, the Centre had taken various welfare measures.

It also trained villagers and women so that the disadvantageous groups also could compete with mainstream groups. But still the country was lagging behind in industrialisation.

Educational institutions should play a vital role in shaping the future entrepreneurs and such Cells would go a long way in this endeavour, he said and added that self employment alone could create new opportunities for the present day generation.

He asked the students to make use of the Cell for their development.

Presiding over the function, Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju said that Salem also should create wealth in the industry as in Chennai and Coimbatore.

Education with technical know-how would make Salem emerge as a major industrial centre in future for which PRIMS' Entrepreneurial Development Cell would strive.

I think this is discussed earlier, due to operational reason, KF was reducing the daily flight to 5days in a week.

Ground water level is going down!

Another good suggestion fron Dinakaran. Salem corporation should revive Arisipalayam water tank/pond. It was supplying water to the city 100 years before. But now it is used as dump yard.

Rain water harvesting from near by houses in Arisipalayam can be directed to the pond which will help in increasing the ground water level as well as revive the pond.

As per new schedule released by KF in its website, the Chennai-Salem-Chennai service was minimized to 5 days a week, no service on Tuesdays and Saturdays but the timings remain same as usual.

This changes will effect from 12th April 2010 to 4th Oct 2010.

The reason for changes unknown.

hi guys...i just searched the flight fare for June...it was 2349 rupees....but it was 1999/- ...what happened...is the flight fare was increased are same as before???

SALEM: Salem Division, which was formed on November 1, 2007, has bagged the Overall Efficiency Shield among the six Railway Divisions falling under Southern Railway, for this year.

A release from the division says that the rolling shield will be given during the 55th Railway Week Celebrations to be held in Chennai on Tuesday. Deepak Krishan, General Manager, Southern Railway, will give away the shields and awards. P.N. Ram, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, will receive the award.

Salem has bagged the Efficiency Shield for Engineering, Electrical, Operations, Personnel, Signal and Telecommunications.

This is due to the runway expansion work which will be done on Tuesdays and Saturdays in Chennai Airport, and hence the runway will be closed from 1400hrs to 1700hrs. Which affects the timing of Salem flight to Take-off.

The Flight Service would be only on SUN-MON-WED-THU-FRI Days.

Sources say, other flights to different destinations by different carriers, are also cancelled due to the same reason.

This Schedule will be on effect from April 12th to October 4th.

However we couldn’t confirm, if this re-scheduling is done due to load factor of this sector. Looks like Kingfisher too, didn’t consider to operate this service on different timings.

The load factor since the inauguration of this sector seems to be 40%-50% during weekdays, and 75%-FULL during weekends is to be noted.

This has been confirmed by KF and DGCA that due to planned closure of Chennai runway for expansion jobs on Tuesdays and Saturdays , while approving the summer schedule KF has to suspend the salem since they had other constraints of rescheduling the timings on issues of aircraft, network planning and restriction of landinf and take off time at Salem airport. KF weekends especially on Saturdays flight is full and they would not have chosen the saturday if it is on load factors......

For the info of Salemites , KF average load on SXV-MAA in the last two weeks is above70% with few days of full occupancy... With no advertisement since starting and not a very convenient timings KF average in this sector for the last five months had been around 60% ...

Yes Satish this is across Cauvery river. I forget to mention that. Pamban railway sea bridge is the the longest one in TN.

சேலம்: ரயில் சேவையில் சிறப்பாக செயல்பட்டதற்காக சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்துக்கு தெற்கு ரயில்வே சார்பில் ஆறு விருதுகள் வழங்கி கவுரம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. இது குறித்து நேற்று சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்ட மேலாளர் ராம் நிருபர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது: சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தில், 2009-10 ம் ஆண்டு பயணிகள் போக்குவரத்தின் மூலம் 261 கோடியே 52 லட்சம் ரூபாய், சரக்கு போக்குவரத்து மூலம் 116 கோடியே 61 லட்சம் ரூபாய் வருவாய் கிடைத்துள்ளது.



கடந்த ஆண்டை விட இது அதிகம். ரயில்வே பட்ஜெட்டில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்துக்கு 100 கோடி ரூபாய் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதன் மூலம் திருப்பூர், கரூர், மேட்டுப்பாளையம் உள்ளிட்ட ரயில் நிலையங்களில் அடிப்படை வசதிகள் மேம்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளது. கோவையில் நடக்கும் செம்மொழி மாநாட்டை முன்னிட்டு கோவை வடக்கு, பீளமேடு, போத்தனூர் ஆகிய ரயில் நிலையங்கள் விரிவுப்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளது. செம்மொழி மாநாட்டுக்கு எந்தெந்த பகுதியில் இருந்து ரயில் இயக்க வேண்டும் என்று மாநில அரசு திட்ட அறிக்கையை தயார் செய்து கொடுத்தால், சம்மந்தப்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் இருந்து ரயில்கள் இயக்குவது குறித்து பரிசீலனை செய்யப்படும்.



சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்தில் 30 மேம்பாலங்கள் கட்ட பட்ஜெட்டில் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால், நில ஆர்ஜிதம் உள்ளிட்ட செயல்களில், மாநில அரசின் முழு ஒத்துழைப்பு இல்லாததால், சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்துக்குட்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் நான்கு இடங்களில் மட்டுமே மேம்பாலம் கட்டும் பணி நடந்து வருகிறது. சேலம்-கரூர் அகல ரயில்பாதை பணிக்கு நடப்பாண்டு 100 கோடி ரூபாய் நிதி ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்து.



சேலம்-நாமக்கல் அகல ரயில்பாதை பணி டிசம்பர் மாதத்துக்குள் நிறைவடைந்துவிடும். கரூர்-நாமக்கல் அகல ரயில்பாதை பணி 2011 மார்ச்சுக்குள் நிறைவடையும். இந்த மாத இறுதிக்குள் குன்னூர்-ஊட்டி ரயில் பாதை சீரமைப்பு பணி முடிந்துவிடும்.ஈரோட்டில் இருந்து பழநிக்கு புதிய ரயில் வழித்தடம் அமைக்க முதல் கட்டமாக 40 கோடி ரூபாய் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. விரைவில் அதற்கான பணிகள் துவங்க உள்ளது. சேலம் ரயில்நிலையத்துக்கு, ரயில்கள் 92 சதவீதம் சரியான நேரத்துக்கு வந்து செல்கிறது. இது கடந்த ஆண்டு வெறும் 78 சதவீதமாக இருந்தது.



தெற்கு ரயில்வே சார்பில் கடந்த ஆண்டு 55 வது ரயில்வே வாரவிழா கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. இதில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்துக்கு, இன்ஜினியரிங், எலக்ட்டிரிக்கல், ரயில் இயக்கம், பர்சனல் பிரிவு, சிக்னல் மற்றும் கம்யூனிகேசன், கேட்டரிங் யுனிட் (சைவம்) ஆகிய ஆறு பிரிவுகளில் சிறந்த ரயில் சேவை புரிந்தமைக்கான விருதுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தெற்கு ரயில்வேயில் சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டம் ஆறாவது கோட்டமாக உதயமானது. குறுகிய காலத்தில் அபரிமித வளர்ச்சியை எட்டியுள்ள சேலம் ரயில்வே கோட்டத்துக்கு ஆறு விருதுகள் கிடைத்துள்ளது, ரயில்வே ஊழியர்கள் மத்தியில் மகிழ்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார்.

புது ரோடு, ரெட்டிப்பட்டி, நெத்திமேடு, அன்னதானப்பட்டி என நான்கு இடங்களில் தலா 4 லட்சம் ரூபாய் மதிப்பில் தானியங்கி சிக்னல்கள் நிறுவப்பட்டன. நேற்று மாலை இந்த சிக்னல்களை மாநகர போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் சுனில்குமார் சிங் திறந்து வைத்தார். 'நடப்பு ஆண்டுக்கு இந்த சிக்னல் விளக்குகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.


வரும் ஆண்டில் மேலும் முக்கிய இடங்களில் சிக்னல்கள் நிறுவுவதற்கான நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது' என, அவர் தெரிவித்தார். நிகழ்ச்சியில், கூடுதல் துணை கமிஷனர் சந்திரசேகரன், போக்குவரத்து உதவி கமிஷனர் ஆறுமுகம் மற்றும் பலர் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

His long years as a field extension officer in the State's agriculture department came in handy when he decided to venture out on his own, marketing hybrid seeds to farmers. The relationship that he had built with the farmers and the trust that they had in him are the foundations on which his entire business has been built.

Given his background, it was but natural for Mr M. Ramasami, Managing Director, Rasi Seeds (P) Ltd, in Attur, Salem, to enter the seeds business. Hybrid seeds in bajra and maize were becoming popular in the early 1970s when he was with the State Agriculture Department.

Farmers were encouraged by the dramatic increase in yields. He had taken the initiative to get hybrid seeds from companies in other States to help farmers. A graduate from the Agriculture University in Coimbatore, it was quite easy for Mr Ramasami to understand the needs of farmers and also grasp what the seed marketing companies were trying to do. That he hailed from an agricultural family was an added advantage.

Once he realised the opportunities that hybrid seeds presented as a business, Mr Ramasami decided to quit his job and started a partnership company with a couple of others. That experiment was short-lived when the partners decided to quit, unable to deal with the vagaries of a nascent business. Undeterred, Mr Ramasami converted the partnership company into a private company, which structure he still retains. The partners had put in Rs 100 each as capital and Rasi Seeds' equity capital now, almost 37 years after it was founded, is about Rs 30 lakh and the turnover in 2008-09 about Rs 450 crore. His son, a mechanical engineer and an MBA, and son-in-law, also an engineer, are active in the company.

Being a first generation entrepreneur, Mr Ramasami has established Rasi Seeds as one of the top seeds company in India, and the brand has excellent product recall in the market, holding its own against a host of other competitors. His strength has been in understanding the needs of both – the farmers producing the seeds and the farmers consuming them – and building long-standing relationship with both.

Traditional agriculture, according to Mr Ramasami, earns farmers limited income, but when you demonstrate the benefits of advances in seeds technology, they are willing to try it out. This is what his business is built on.

YERCAUD: The Horticulture Department has undertaken various steps to upgrade its facilities for the forthcoming summer festival.

The officials have started collecting different varieties of flowers to attract the tourists' attention. Different kinds of flower seedlings have been planted in 15,000 pots so far. Further planting is also in progress.

With rains becoming scarce in the district, watering has become a herculean task.

“However we have put our best efforts to keep the seeds and cuttings sprouting and green,” said an official.

The department this year has planned to display 30,000 potted flowers of exquisite varieties.

They have also sought technical know-how from Udhagamandalam and Kodaikkanal.

The flowers varieties include Aster, Hydranzia, Gerbera, Chrysanthemum, Verbenium, Salvia, Marigold, Calundula, Rose, Anthurium, Diacy, Balsam, Dancing doll, Begonia, Cosmos, Petunia, Antirhinum, Panciy, Dianthus, Pincushion, Dhalia, Zinnia and Phlox.

Meanwhile the drive against plastics is also being carried out in the hill station with members and officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and non governmental organizations leading the campaign.

Collector J. Chandrakumar launched the drive a week ago.

The Salem District Council meeting, which met at Salem recently, passed a resolution in which it was decided to construct a guest house at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh.

Similarly, efforts were on for operating additional services between Coimbatore and Salem via Tirupur and Erode. Approval from headquarters was awaited. Steps were on to identify rakes for the same whether ordinary coaches or electrical multiple units. Once the rakes were made available, the services would resume.

Mr. Ram also said that the division had already written to the headquarters for operating train services on six routes namely Coimbatore – Bangalore, Coimbatore – Rameshwaram (via Erode – Karur), Coimbatore – Sengottah and Coimbatore – Erode. Once the rakes were ready, these services would become operational. Even the Coimbatore – Tirupati bi-weekly special, announced in the Union Railway budget, would become operational once the rakes were ready.

I think we need more players to different destinations. Like Bangalore, Bombay, Delhi etc. Hope Spicejet or Paramount will fly from here soon. Now KF needs some competition to exploit the potential. AAI also need to provide the night landing facility. Long way to go I guess....

I heard the story is same in BHEL,Ranipet and Neyveli Lignite..

The reason is most of companies in TN does not expand let it might be Central govt or state govt companies. Only in Gujarat first company will invest say 100 crores within 5 years then at least 10 times more so scalability in TN is less for various reasons.

I think Arul_Murugan told once that one SLF is running in Salem. Not sure..He can conform that.

Moreover SLFs are running in Chennai, Madurai, Kovai, Trichy, Tuticorin, Nellai, Nagarkovil as city bus routes.

Now more places got the old SLFs(which were running as city buses) and new JNNURM SLFs as moffussil buses. few of them are Palani, Pollachi, Udumalpet, Tirupur, Mettupalayam, Karur, Salem, Erode, Gopi, Sathy(By TNSTC-CBE). Palani, Dindugal, Periakulam, Theni, Cumbum, Rajapalayam(TNSTC-MDU).

^^In Tuticorin no much supports for SLFs. only 2-4 buses are operated before. And they too not get much support from the commuters. They are now running as inter-city routes. And it is not running in Tuticorin town limits.

24 SLFs are running in Nellai.
And from July onwards 40 new Jnnurm SLFs are going to be operated in Nellai(by TNSTC-MDU division)

Salem Collectorate building construction. Dt.Collector inspected yesterday (3.5.10) and informed due to increase in rate of steel and cement the total cost escalated from 25 Cr to 35 Cr and they wrote for approval to Govt for the additional 10 Cr.

He also informed that the project will be completed during 2nd week of Aug 10 and will opned as per schedule.

Two vestibule SLF buses have been given to Salem with Madurai Regd. That too they gave when Parliament Election. One bus is running as a town bus in salem and another one is running as the town bus between Hosur and Attibelle.

I have seen under construction building near KVB bank in swarnapuri which is named as "Dhanalakshi Bank".

Saw one more commercial building also coming up next to Peter England show room. No idea what this building is.

Could see some Renovation work happening in KMB granites building as well.

Once madurai was like this. But in the past 3 yrs, madurai got more number of SLFs and new normal city buses. within 2 yrs madurai got around 100 normal new city buses and 150 SLFs for the city. No new city buses(Normal) were added by TNSTC-CBE also. it got 50 SLFs in 2 yrs. The current SLFs were given to CBE because of JNNURM. if JNNURM is not there then CBE will also be the same. look at the normal city buses there. :)

TNSTC MDU is going to give 40 SLFs. But we dont know whether they are from JNNURM or from old slf buses. :) we need to wait and see.
For sure they will not transfer JNNURM buses from TNSTC-CBE to TNSTC-SLM. Already TNSTC-CBE has transferred most of the JNNURM buses(which are supposed to be operated inside the CBE city) to its neary by branches and erode region.

SALEM: The Salem Civil Engineers Association and Salem Corporation have taken joint efforts to develop a roadside park near the Periyar Bridge here.

The park would have sprawling lawns and flowering plants.

The Corporation as a part of its drive to beautify the city has decided to develop such roadside parks in the city with private participation.

Till recently the area has been left unattended encouraging anti-socials to occupy the place both during night and day hours.

To avoid such unnecessary intrusion and to make the place being misused, the Corporation and the association had undertaken the venture to beautify the place.

The works would be completed very soon, said officials.

On instructions from district administration, Corporation had also undertaken similar works opposite Government Medical College Hospital, which used to be encroached upon by many.

Corporation evicted the encroachers and initiated the beautifying works.

An iron mesh also had been erected to secure the place.

YERCAUD: This summer the hill station of Yercaud is witnessing a boom in tourist flow after a lull of two years.

The flow of tourists from Karnataka, the mainstay of the hill station's economy, and from its other major source, Kerala, has started showing a healthy upward trend this year and hoteliers and others connected with the tourism industry are a happy lot. As the Karnataka tourists stay for a minimum of three to four days to enjoy the salubrious climate, occupancy in hotels has now touched 100 per cent during weekends and nearly 90 per cent on week days. So do the allied industries, which are also buoyant.

The raging row over the Hogenekkal Drinking Water Project between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and recession in IT industry had hit tourism in this hill station very hard for two consequent years - 2008 and 2009. The number of tourists from Karnataka, especially Bangalore, had gone down substantially.

Yercaud during those two years wore a haunted look. Missing were the youngsters working in IT giants, their trendy sedans and roaring sporty bikes. Only 25 per cent of the rooms were booked in those two years.

“The years of despair have gone. The industry suffered a heavy loss then,” recollects a leading hotelier who fondly hopes to cash in on the revival of the tourism industry this year. He has heavily invested atop the hills on nearly 600 rooms with tariff ranging from Rs. 800 to Rs. 12,000 a day during the peak season.

Many have started promoting eco tourism with resorts amid high trees and green coffee plantations. An official in Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, which operates boats in the picturesque Yercaud lake, says tourists are even encouraged to plant saplings around the lake. The district administration, which is planning to hold Summer Festival during the third week of May, is optimistic of breaking this year the previous records of tourist arrival.

Nellai(6th big city in state) which is next to Salem (5th big city in state) is already having 24 SLFs. And in coming July month 40 New Jnnurm's SLFs are going to be operated. From Madurai division these buses are going to be given for Nellai. Likewise from CBE they could give some SLFs to Salem......

Even Nellai is not a TNSTC division head quarters. It is part of Madurai division.
The Minister K.N.N told that Madurai division will be split and New Nellai division will be formed.

But Salem is the TNSTC Division head quarters. Salem needs to be concentrated........

Through another joint venture, TIDCO and Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) will set up a state-wide distribution network to supply natural gas. GAIL is setting up a Rs 3,000-crore, 800-km Kochi-Bangalore gas pipeline which passes through the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Natural gas will be available to the consumers from the Kochi LNG terminal from 2012, he said.

KRISHNAGIRI: Decco, a wholly-owned company of Mumbai-based United Phosphorus Ltd, in association with a local franchisee Harsha Fresh launched a mango coating and grading unit at Aalappati village, 18 km from Krishnagiri on Thursday.

The unit was commissioned at a cost of Rs. 1.87 crore. The fruit processing machine costing Rs. 1.10 crore was bought from Italy-based technology major Samma Projects, owned by United Phosphorous Ltd. The project is a 50:50 joint venture of Decco and Harsha Fresh, said Agri. Pugazhenthy, Advisor, Harsha Fresh. K.N. Singh, General Manager, Decco, told reporters that it was the first fruit coating and grading unit in South India. The installed capacity of the unit is 3 tonnes per hour. The target for the current financial year is 1000 tonnes. The company plans to process 3,000 tonnes of mango each season.

The process will extend the shelf-life of the fruits produced in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri region for export purposes.

Every year, 1.5 tonnes of mango is being exported from this region alone. The processing would be extended to other crops which are abundantly cultivated in this region such as tomato and capsicum.

The Italy-based Decco (Decay Control) is a world leader in post-harvest and storage solution of fruits and vegetables such as coatings, cleaners, sanitizers, fungicides, growth regulators and anti-scald for the past 80 years.

Above news item is confusing. It says stretch between Paul Market and Shevapet Main Road that is, Longly Road made as one way. But this Longly Road was made one way long ago.

It should be the stretch between Longly Road junction and Srinivasa Park (near Lorry Market) on Shevapet/Fort Main Road.

i took the Kf flight from chennai-salem on 28th apr.the flight was almost full,only some 8 to 9 seats were vaccant.Happy to see the response towards chennai-salem sector. im sure,if a salem-mumbai flight service is introduced,it will be a success too as it will not only be used by citizens of salem dt,but also by the business community of erode,namakal and dharmapuri dt too.

SALEM: The Salem Corporation has undertaken many road projects in the city of late.

The civic body has started laying tar road at KMS Garden and Arjunan Nagar in Alagapuram Pudur in ward 5 at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. These projects are carried out under the MLA's Local Area Development Fund of Salem II Assembly segment. The works are being undertaken after many representations from the public of the areas.

Similarly, the Corporation has also taken up the road works in Ayyantirumalaigai, where the houses of Tamil Nadu Housing Board are situated. The road is being laid at a cost of Rs. 4 lakh from the water tank. “This has been our long pending demand,” said a resident.

The residents urged the Corporation authorities to ensure quality while laying the roads. Many of the roads in the city, though laid recently, have started developing potholes and craters thus making the road users to suffer heavily.

The roads at many places are not laid properly due to insufficient rolling.

Hence, the residents wanted the Corporation officials to pay frequent inspection while the roads are being laid at different places in the city.

The runway expansion job is likely to continue for six months, but KF is going to restore the services for the Salem sector with different timings on these two days very soon...
KF has also shared the informations that they get regular passengers to connecting locations like Delhi / Mumbai/ Hyderabad from SALEM and this is very encouraging...

yes,the response for chennai-salem-chennai flight is encouraging.
i have also shared this in the forum few days ago.the chennai-salem flight which i took on 29th apr was almost full except for some 8-9 seats which means a 90% occupancy/passenger load.

I just shared the info posted in Erode thread. Auction for 3rd phase of private FM radio is likely to be held next month. They are expecting some technical snag due to close geographical proximity between towns/cities listed under FM-III.

FM phase III auction :

New Delhi: Interference of FM radio waves in smaller towns coupled with non-viability of radio business may derail the plans of the ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B) to kick-start the third-phase of private FM radio (FM-III) in March.

The wireless, planning and coordination (WPC) wing of the communications ministry says a large number of the 790-plus FM frequencies listed for FM-III across 230 towns will not be able to work due to close geographical proximity to neigbouring smaller towns thereby resulting in the interference of radio waves. As a result only a limited number of FM frequencies may actually come up for auctions, says WPC.

“We have informed the I&B ministry that they may conduct a study to see the feasibility of FM radio spectrum across all the towns as allocation of all the listed frequencies may not be possible to successful bidders post the auction process,” a source in the WPC wing told FE on condition of anonymity. WPC, the national radio regulatory authority, responsible for frequency spectrum management including licensing and caters to the needs of all wireless users, both government and private within the country.

The FM radio waves work in a radius of 90-120 km while a large number of towns listed under FM-III are within the range. The FM radio works in the 88 MHz- 108 MHz frequency band that also mandates fixed spectrum to All India Radio, certain police frequencies among others.

Technical experts say not more than 40-45% of the overall FM-III frequencies can actually be allocated for commercial use. “Not all frequency will get auctioned in FM-III going by the past experience of FM-I and FM-II. And it is a fact that smaller cities can not take more than two frequency depending on their geographical location and distance from adjacent towns,” said KRP Verma, former CMD of Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a profit-making public sector enterprise under the I&B ministry.
However, the existing FM radio firms are sceptical and say not more than 70-80 stations are worth investments under FM-III. Currently, there are 250 private FM radio stations operated by around 40 companies with most running in financial loss due to high input costs and lower returns.

“At present, almost all of FM-III is unviable due to high music royalties paid by the existing radio stations to the music companies,” he added.

Even smaller cities/towns are having FM radio station, the city with a population of about 8.5 lakhs highly deserves it.

Yes Bala, I agree with you. Our people’s attitude should change towards keeping our surrounding/city clean.
But we should say that our Corporation is lagging in many aspects. Take for example, the project of shifting of dump yard from Erumapalayam to the outskirts of the city (Chettichavadi) with modern compost yard is dragging for years together. Even garbage collection vehicles are finding hard space to dump wastes in the existing yard.

They can implement effective door-to-door collection of solid wastes to improve the status and we should cooperate.

SALEM: The solo ATR flight, being operated by the Kingfisher Airlines in the Chennai-Salem-Chennai sector, has been recording more than 75 per cent of occupancy since the start of April this year.

Frequent fliers here point out that despite inconvenient timing of operation, (around 3.30 p.m. from Chennai), people still patronize the flight. It has been enjoying nearly 50 per cent of occupancy since its maiden journey to Salem last year. From the first week of April, the flight has started recording steep increase in the occupancy jumping to 75 per cent.

But of late the flight cannot be operated twice in a week, since repair and extension works are going on in the runway at the Chennai airport between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The Airport sources point out that the operators have approached the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to reschedule its timings to Salem on these two days.

After its flight to Hyderabad and Tuticorin, the ATR is redirected to Salem. But as the runway works are still on, the flight is forced to remain idle on these two days, the sources claim. The operators have asked for advancing the timing of departure from Chennai to 1.50 p.m. instead of the present timing.

The flight in return direction from Salem can land at Chennai at 4.20 p.m., they say by pointing out that by the time the day's works on the runway at Chennai would have been stopped. “A decision to this effect is expected soon,” says an official.

Meanwhile the AAI is seeking assistance from the District administration to expedite land acquisition process for airport expansion. The Airport sitting on the sprawling 136 acres of land needs an additional 563 acres for its expansion, which however is resisted by locals.

I just shared the info posted in Erode thread. Auction for 3rd phase of private FM radio is likely to be held next month. They are expecting some technical snag due to close geographical proximity between towns/cities listed under FM-III.



No idea about the prospective companies. Anyways, Salem will be a worth investment place and leading players will quote for it.
Even smaller cities/towns are having FM radio station, the city with a population of about 8.5 lakhs highly deserves it.


Salem got sanction for FM in the year 1999, but the then administration and politicians in the helm of affairs did not allot land to AIR and hence it was dragged to Darmapuri..
Subsequently lot of efforts are on to bring AIR to Salem and as a part of this AIR has installed a relay FM transmitter at Yercaud (103.7) for the benefit of Salem city which relays Kodai FM. AIR has been alloted land at Yercaud for upgrading it to a high power FM transmitter. The proposal to have a Studio at Salem is under consideration of Min Of I&B and favourable announcement on Salem AIR is likely.
Coming to private FM stations , under phase 1 &2 auction were held for establishing private FM operators sharing the AIR infrastructure like existing tower and other utilities . Accordingly only those towns and cities which were already having All India radio stations could be covered. The selection never was based on any other crieteria.. The Phase 3 FM expansion will cover all areas not connected by AIR and Private FM and Salem has been there like other cities/towns . Salem will get 4 licenses auctioned and in all probability , Suriyan, Hello, Mirchi, and any other popular brand will enter salem .. All may happen in 2010-11

Regarding FM stations. On what basis they decide the no of FM channels??

And when salem is being for auction, erode also is being put into auction. I think erode can receive the cbe's broadcasting itself??
