SALEM: As traffic snarls and stiff land prices have rendered Bangalore a non-viable centre, especially for handing air freight, many leading cargo movers and logistics operators have started eyeing the vast tracts of barren lands that abut the four-lane National Highways connecting the Salem Airport with Bangalore city in well under three hours' drive.

The Airport at Salem, handling a lone ATR flight from the stables of Kingfisher Airways in the Chennai-Salem-Chennai sector today, is offering an ideal location for major cargo handlers to establish their ware houses since transporting goods from Bangalore airport is increasingly becoming a nightmarish experience for truck operators and other cargo handlers.

Besides, the viability of maintaining warehouses in Bangalore city and its suburbs has emerged a difficult proportion since the steep escalation of land cost.

Hence many reputed cargo movers for leading firms have started approaching people, mainly farmers in Salem and Dharmapuri districts who own lands close to the Salem-Bangalore Highways, which offer easy accessibility to the Salem Airport.

A multi-national confectionary firm has already deputed a team to look out for lands nearer to the airport while another has gone a step further by carrying out a feasibility study in this regard, which sources claim, sends encouraging signals to them.

Regarding FM stations. On what basis they decide the no of FM channels??

And when salem is being for auction, erode also is being put into auction. I think erode can receive the cbe's broadcasting itself??

Yes ,Erode, vellore are also in the list of cities for third phase auction. When
on auction suriyan FM gets erode , salem the frequency is the same in all the cities (CBE, Erode, salem) and hence the person in Erode will be hearing Erode station only and he will not be able to receive the CBE surian. The Private FM auction is based on commercial consideration of the cities and and technology guidelines are specified by ministry.
We have surian FM at Tirunelveli and Tuticorin which are just 40 KM s away

As of now. Erode doesn't get Suryan FM or any of the Kovai Fm's except Kodai FM. i think kovai fm's have less bandwidth. Travelling from Coimbatore, FM is clear only till perundurai, for a decent car FM with antenna.

I have seen under construction building near KVB bank in swarnapuri which is named as "Dhanalakshi Bank".

Saw one more commercial building also coming up next to Peter England show room. No idea what this building is.

Could see some Renovation work happening in KMB granites building as well.

KMB granites is opening its showroom just like GTP granites, that is the new construction going on there.

Above news item is confusing. It says stretch between Paul Market and Shevapet Main Road that is, Longly Road made as one way. But this Longly Road was made one way long ago.

It should be the stretch between Longly Road junction and Srinivasa Park (near Lorry Market) on Shevapet/Fort Main Road.

You mean Police Patrol road? Yes Longly road was oneway for more than a decade. There is no solution for traffic in Shevapet main road unless the business center moves outside the city i.e to Kandhampati bye-pass along with Lorry Market.

I dont know about Gandhi road much but w.r.t to Fairlands it is more than 3500.

That is land rate in Fairlands, In Omalur main road it crosses 10,000 rupees per Sq ft.

Land rate has zoomed to 1200 rs per sq ft even in Outskirts like Redipatti, Mamangam, Periyar University due to 4 lane road and Airport reopening.

A Bangalore-based private helicopter firm, which finds Salem a viable place for operating its services to tap the tourist potential in Yercaud town is looking out for 5000 square feet of vacant land adjacent to city for its landing and take-off.

The copter firm, which is in touch with the Salem-Dharmapuri Chamber of Commerce, has evinced keen interest when the latter approached it for its operations from Salem.

Many of the leading hotels in Yercaud town and also a few hospitals in Salem city have approached the Chamber assuring their support to the flying of Copter.

Talking to The Hindu, Chamber president S. Sathyanarayanan said that the helicopter firm was ready to operate its services to the city provided the hotels and hospitals ensured good patronage. “I am in touch with them constantly and they show spontaneous interest in operating their services. While the tourist potential is quite heavy, the medical necessities also open up new avenues of operations,” he further pointed out.

Study

The Chamber has also decided to carry out a study in association with the firm and based on which the final decision could be arrived.

“A leading star hotel in Yercaud is willing to provide space for landing and take-off for the copter operations especially from Bangalore from where the tourist flow to the hill station round the year is heavy,” Sathyanarayanan said.

The essential criterion is that the landing site for the copter must be in close proximity to the city since the Salem Airport is some 15 km away, he said.

Hosur-Krishnagiri road to be made 6-lane at Rs 925cr

Reliance Infra To Implement Project

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai: Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (Rinfra)-led consortium has bagged a 60-km road project connecting Hosur and Krishnagiri. The project, which was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure will be executed under the National Highways Development Plan phase-V.

The project is estimated to cost Rs 925 crore and will be executed on a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (toll) basis with a concession period of 24 years, including the construction period. The project involves sixlaning of the Hosur-Krishnagiri road on the National Highway 7.

Rinfra will spend on six-laning and maintenance of the section between 33km and 93km of the NH7. It is a major connecting road between Bangalore and Chennai and Bangalore and Salem. It is expected to reduce the time and cost of travel and add to transportation facilities to Madurai.

The project will start generating revenues immediately after achieving financial closure, which is expected to be achieved within the next six months, according to an release from Rinfra. About 15 companies had taken part in the bid process, based on the highest premium amount of Rs 66.90 crore. Rinfra has already completed execution of two road projects in the state—Namakkal-Karur toll project and Dindigul-Samayanallur toll project worth Rs 760 crore—and is commercially operational. It is also executing the Salem-Ulundurpet, Tiruchi- Karur and Tiruchi-Dindigul stretches, which are under completion. Rinfra is now executing ten road projects with a total outlay of Rs 8,725 crore. The company is looking for opportunities in Ultra Mega Road Projects across India, it said.

Happening place for IT

The IT revolution has not only taken the private sector by storm but also enabled the Government to provide services that ensure citizen empowerment. Through ELCOT, Tamil Nadu has become a preferred destination for IT investments, making Tamil Nadu a happening state

The last decade has been one marked by an Information Technology and Telecom revolution. Tamil Nadu, at the start of that revolution, was known for manufacturing and new investments only trickled in.

IT PARKS

Realising the potential of the industry, as well as understanding its importance to the growth of the State, the Tamil Nadu Government has not only encouraged investments in the capital city of Chennai but is also developing Tier II cities, to ensure overall development.

Carrying out its mandate is the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), which has created IT Parks with high-end data links, to make them attractive enough for Multi-National Corporations to establish their offices here.

To accomplish these ends, ELCOT selected appropriate locations and received funding from the Central Government, for further development of selected real estate.

Some of the areas earmarked for further development include Sholinganallur (377 acres, at an investment of Rs194 crores), Coimbatore (62 acres, at a cost of Rs70 crores), Trichy (147.61 acres, at Rs60 crores), Madurai-Vadapazhanchi (245.17 acres at Rs45 crores), Madurai-Ilandaikulam (28.91 acres at Rs32 crores), Salem (164.26 acres at Rs33 crores), Tirunelveli (500 acres at Rs50 crore) and Hosur (174.47 acres at Rs48 crores). Companies such as Wipro and HCL have already invested in Sholinganallur and ELCOT is expecting more investments in the range of Rs180 to Rs4000 crores, in these parks, over the course of the next five years.

UPGRADING TECHNOLOGY

ELCOT, which is the approved optional procurement agency for the government for IT products and related services, adopted an innovative procurement policy of encouraging competition among various vendors. This resulted in savings of 20-30 percent, on a total procurement for 2008-09 of Rs308.65 crores.

ELCOT, along with the Tamil Nadu Government, also provides end-to-end IT solutions support, to Government departments, to help improve their services, provide transparency and reduce processing time. Some of the solutions include a web-based online family card from Civil Supplies, online registration, municipal E-Governance for the Chennai Corporation and online tax administration for commercial tax, amongst others.

ELCOT is at the forefront of the Government's plans to incorporate transparent E-Governance, by implementing solutions across departments and across districts.

People travelling in Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses will soon be able to view their favourite songs, movies and news programmes through digital televisions to be installed in 3,000 buses plying in the city and suburbs.

According to a senior MTC official, the corporation has called for tenders to install digital televisions in buses.

He said the corporation had decided to install the TVs after a similar initiative was well accepted by the people travelling by buses of the Villupuram Tamil Nadu State transport Corporation and State Express Transport Corporation.

“In MTC buses the television will be operated on Build, Own Operate and Manage (BOOM) concept and the programmes would be fed through the pen drive, chip or other similar modes,” he said.

“The revenue will be through royalty, which will be fixed only by the tender process.”

A senior official in the transport department told Deccan Chronicle that digital TVs would also be installed in buses in four districts — Madurai, Salem, Tiruchy and Coimbatore.

“The present system can be upgraded to a centralised mode once 3G and other concepts come into place,” he said.

“This would enable us to control the programmes sitting at the central office,” he noted.

Educomp Tele Education Network for CA preparation (ETEN CA), a unit of IndiaCan Education, has launched the country’s first satellite-based coaching centre in Bangalore for CA (Chartered Accountancy) aspirants.

ETEN has more than 100 centres across the country with around 20,000 students. Puneet Jhingan, senior vice-president of IndiaCan Education Pvt Ltd, told reporters on Thursday that in Bangalore alone, around 16,000 candidates have registered for CA exams.

Jhingan said CA required skilled and good quality coaching, for which candidates tend to go to metro cities. He said ETEN CA would have a studio in one city, where experts would take classes and that would be telecast across its other centres.

In south India, ETEN CA has planned to set up 10 centres, including Chennai, Mangalore, Mysore, Cochin, Erode and Salem.

For details, contact www.eten.educomp.com.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/commodities/Electricity-from-chicken-litter-turns-on-farmers/articleshow/5992482.cms

he chicken droppings produce methane gas at a farm in Goundampalayam in Namakkal district and the gas is converted into electricity using a patented technology of a local farmer-turned-entrepreneur. The farmer sells the dried litter slurry generated as a residue as manure for farmers. He uses a method based on an Israel technology and converts the remaining liquid scum as liquid NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) fertiliser. Though generating energy is not new to the region as a handful of farmers are producing gober gas to generate power for captive use, the district hasn’t seen the complete conversion of poultry waste into useful products.

A few years ago, Chennai-based GK Bio Energy was producing power from poultry litter in Namakkal and was supplying 1.5 mw to the grid using a foreign technology. It is said the company closed due to mismanagement. But sources say a German company has tied up with an Indian partner to re-vitalise this plant.

Known as the poultry hub of India, Namakkal has 80% of the poultry business concentrated within the 50-km radius in the city. The district produces 2.5 crore eggs a day, which generates a turnover of around Rs 7 crore per day. The layer bird feed industry alone makes a turnover of another Rs 7 crore a day.
A layer bird generates litter of around 50 grams a day and the 3.5 crore layer birds in the district produce 1,600 tonne litter per day.

by the way,i think, the new building which is coming up near peter england showroom, swarnapuri, opp to avr jewellery is MALABAR gold and not a granite showroom as said by one of our forumer.
So,Like TANISHQ jewellery,JOYALUKAS,KHAZANA,KALYAN one more jewellery chain brand is geeting added to this part of SALEM.TANISHQ(TATA's) was the first outlet to be started opp newbusstand in 1999 and now this area has become the main jewellery zone, outbeating the old town area. The scenario is also same in coimbatore where crosscut rd is the main jewel zone now,and not raja street.

I think he's telling about the construction which is adjacent to the Peter England show room.

KMB granites construction is going on inside the KMB granites only and this is opposite side to Peter England show room.

SALEM: ‘Save Greenery and Save Earth' was the motto as various organisations and educational institutions celebrated the World Environment Day here on Saturday.

Isha Foundation took the lead by planting saplings on the premises of Salem Government Arts College.

Its main objective was to increase the green cover in Tamil Nadu by at least 10 per cent by planting 11.4 crore saplings.

Many had joined the crusade and so far 82 lakh saplings had been planted in the State. S. Seetharaman presided over the sapling plantation in Salem city which Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini inaugurated.

In another event, Mayor and Corporation Commissioner planted saplings behind the office of Salem Corporation on behalf of Veerapandi Chezhiyan Green Movement in which various organisations including Asokar Pasumai Illam Movement, Vinayaka Vidyalaya Matriculation HSS, Salem Green City, Tharunam and others took part.

Officials from Department of Forest distributed free saplings also. The Salem district administration had also informed that general public who came to understand that trees in their localities were illegally felled by anti socials and others could contact the following phone numbers: 0427- 2336002, 2336003 and 2336004.

Seminars and workshops also were organised in many institutions.

A drawing competition for school children on ‘Environment' was organised at Modern Petrol Bunk in which more than 50 children took part. Malar Vishu Kaliappan presided.

Chennai: A people's initiative has begun in earnest with the objective of carving out a bird sanctuary along with the process of eco-restoration of one of the biggest water spreads in Salem city.

Mookaneri, in the heart of Salem, is being cleaned up and desilted using donations from public to improve the groundwater table. Nearly 50 islands are being created for planting 25,000 saplings, which, when fully grown, will provide nesting ground for birds, both migratory and resident.

The lowest rainfall recorded last year in over 100 years and rising temperatures sounded warning bells among the members of the Salem Citizens Forum, a non-profit organisation. To facilitate eco-restoration and creation of bird sanctuary, the Public Works Department handed over Mookaneri and Ismail Khan tank to the forum for maintenance.

As the tank has gone dry after many years, the forum has utilised the opportunity to desilt the water body and create 25 mounds where saplings are being planted. As rapid urbanisation and resultant reckless tree felling had eroded the green space of the city, the forum used the silted soil to create islands measuring 500 sq. m each.

“The lake has not been desilted for 60 years,” says S. Saravanan, a member of INTACH, Thanjavur Chapter, in-charge of Salem. With Ficus species of trees at the core, the islands will have trees like barringtonia to provide safe nesting for the birds and bamboo thickets at the edges to prevent soil erosion.

The forum has spent about Rs.4 lakh till now purely from donations, mostly by individuals, as there is no financial support from the government, he says.

Buses to Salem

I was at CMBT last night, and it was bad to see not even single well maintained buses are available to Salem.

TNSTC Salem seems to have withdrawn all its overnight UD services. Only ordinary buses with 3x2 seat arrangement are being operated. On the other hand, TNSTC CBE operates A/C and UD services to Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Pollachi.

Also, SETC services to Salem were too unplanned. 22:00 UD did not make into the PF, even at 21:55, whereas 22:30 service was already packed with reserved passengers. SETC officials were having no idea when the 22:00 bus will come.

TNSTC Salem is the dumbest of all the corporations in the state. No vision whatsoever with these crap officials. No innovation of new routes in both city and mofussil routes. The top officals of the corporation are in no mood to seek the ministry to allote some A/C and SLF's for the division.

THE HINDU Daily- Hardly covering any salem News!!!

Not sure if Forum members noticed it. These days the hindu, a English daily, is hardly covering any news from Salem region. When Salem deservs its own edition, I hardly see any news from Salem region either in the news paper or in the online section.

Is there a way to take up this issue and put a request to The Hindu daily to give more importance to this region?

You are right Mr.Palsen I also noticed that, news coverage for Salem region is very poor in Hindu newspaper.

There was no Salem news published in the Hindu website from 29-May-10 to 31-May-10 and 7-Jun-10.

Hi
Some days back i was travelling by SETC to Salem, a passenger sitting in front to me was holding Hindu paper which mentioned as Bangalore - Tamil nadu edition. I saw pages 2 to 4 covering salem, salem districts and surroundings news. That day itself I wondered why they dont have seperate Salem Edition but instead why they have Bangalore - Tamil nadu edition.

Work on the Salem-Namakkal-Karur broadgauge line, a link for southern districts with western Tamil Nadu, is progressing fast. The project, initiated in 1996-97, was mired in legal wrangles related to land acquisition and other issues before it took off three years ago. With DMK in the State and PMK at the Centre and a goodwill between them, the project then received a fillip and a steady flow of funds. The legal issues of land attachment were sorted out thanks to the efforts of the then Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu.

A senior official with the Salem Railway Division said almost 80 per cent of earth works had been completed in the 85-km-long project being executed in two phases – Salem-Namakkal and Namakkal-Karur.
Works on many culverts, bridges and rail overbridges are on the verge of completion. Work on the Vangal bridge across river Cauvery, near Karur, is on. Similarly the massive overbridges on Trichy Road in Namakkal town, Senthamangalam and also one near Mohanur are nearing completion.

Buildings for stations in Rasipuram, Namakkal and Mohanur are yet to be completed. There are six major bridges, including the 800-metre long Vangal bridge, 12 minor bridges, 25 rail overbridges and underbridges on this 85-kilometre stretch. Railway sources said traffic between the Salem and Namakkal sector would be possible next year.

But will the dumb Salem Corporation bother?

If the huge vacant land on the eastern side of the bus stand is in dispute means, atleast the corporation should have constructed one additional platform near the Dharmapuri buses side. This will help to some extent.

Few months ago they started a Rs.1 crore:nuts: link road. (Starts in front of Tanishq Jewellery and ends near eastern restroom of the bus stand). Don’t know the current status.

This is how all our tax money are looted by these dumb politicians.

The sanitary condition of the city is going worse day by day. We can see uncollected heap of garbages wherever we turn. Arterial roads and posh areas are no exceptions to this.

This certainly was not the case 6-7 months ago, and the city was sporting a clean look then (at least to some extent).

The Mayor (being a masters degree holder in Public Administration), the corporation commissioner and all the authorities are not even doing 1% justice to their posting.

CHENNAI: The government has approved uniform development control regulations (DCR) on special buildings, multi-storeyed buildings, group developments, layouts and sub-divisions for nine municipal corporations and suburban areas in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.

The nine corporations for which the DCRs will become applicable are Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Vellore. Besides, the local planning authorities in Gummidipoondi, Chengalpattu and Mamallapuram have been covered.

Order issued

An order to this effect was issued by the State Housing and Urban Development department a couple of days ago, according to an official.

Till now, the municipal corporations were adopting separate regulations. The uniform regulations would avoid different technical interpretations at various levels and be of great help to the common public and officials to ensure expeditious issuance of planning permission.

As per the new DCRs, the height of multi-storeyed buildings would be co-related with the width of the abutting roads. In respect of roads with a width of 18 metres and above, the height of any such building can be up to 60 metres. In the case of 30.5-foot wide roads, the building's height can be more than 60 metres.

Where developments are proposed on a site exceeding 10,000 sq. m., 10 per cent of the site shall be earmarked for providing houses for lower income groups and economically weaker sections of society.

The government has also constituted an empowered committee, headed by Housing and Urban Development Secretary, to examine cases that cause hardship to the public and relax the planning parameters. The committee includes Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department Secretary and Member-Secretary of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority with the Director of Town and Country Planning as convener.

The move to formulate the uniform DCRs follows a decision taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi three months ago. At the meeting, he had observed that rules could not be different for a building in an urban area and those falling within the places abutting the urban area. The DCRs framed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority should appropriately be incorporated, he had advised officials.

Explaining the rationale behind adapting the CMDA's DCRs for other municipal corporations, an official release stated that the provisions of the First Master Plan were already ordered to be followed in Tiruchi, Madurai, Tiruneveli, Salem and Coimbatore.

The applicability of the uniform regulations to Vellore was keenly felt as it would permit institutions such as the Christian Medical College to expand its infrastructure. Tirupur also stood on a similar footing, the release added.

Work in progress: PWD has taken up bridge works at Vedapatti
Perumapalayam in Salem converting a culvert in to a bridge.

SALEM: Public Works Department (PWD) has undertaken bridge works at a cost of Rs 1.04 crore in the Veeranam and D. Perumapalayam Road converting the causeway into an overbridge.

The Public Works Department sources here said that the bridge works were being undertaken at a fast pace and would be completed as scheduled so that it could be thrown open for use.

Once completed it would connect nearly 20,000 people in the neighbourhood with the main road of Veeranam.

The causeway had been a major problem for many, including school children, during rainy season, for it made them travel an extra mile in order to reach their destinations.

This was so because they were not able to use the causeway. The people in the region had been demanding a bridge for a long time.

The Public Works Department undertook the work, replacing the piped causeway with a high level bridge under the Part II scheme of 2010.

The bridge, once completed, would connect Vedapatti, Karikadu, Mohur, Komberikkadu, Valayaigoundanur and other hamlets and villages in the area.

SALEM: Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of a private firm, which has been entrusted with the works of garbage removal and drainage cleaning in 21 wards in the city, councillors have urged the Salem Corporation not to re-tender sanitation works to private firms saying that the city is stinking.

Participating in the council meeting here on Monday, the councillors urged the Corporation authorities to seek the opinion of the public and the councillors on the issue before deciding further. Till then, the decision to award tenders to any private firm should be put on hold, they demanded.

They also said that the private firm had not done justice to its work. Garbage heaps could be seen in every corner of the streets and roads while drainage remained choked and silted.

Pattali Makkal Katchi councillor Dhanasekar insisted that conservancy works should be done by the civic body and no private firm should be employed further. He pointed out that mosquito menace had increased manifold. No proper fumigation was done in many wards. Hence, the Corporation's Health Department must take immediate efforts to eradicate the proliferation of mosquitoes, he added.

AIADMK councillor Geethasekaran said that garbage was not removed daily in her ward. Residents blamed the people's representatives for the tardy removal. Sundar of DMK also insisted that the Corporation should undertake the sanitation works. Dharmalingam of Congress also expressed the same view.

Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini said that she would consult all before taking any decision on this issue. She further pointed out that works to the tune of Rs. 24.56 crore were being undertaken in four divisions. Commissioner K. S. Palanisamy said that as per the government guidelines the conservancy works were given to the private firm. Tenders had been called again for the same, he said.

^^ Does the job of the corporation officials end, just when they award the contract to some XYZ private firm? Don't they have the responsibility of keeping an eye to see if the firm is committed enough to keep the allocated ward clean?

The sanitary conditions of the city is getting worse day by day, and we can see huge heaps of garbage dumps wherever we turn. This is not how the city looked few years back.

These people just take away some cheap publicity, by posing to the cameras of press people, on the next day of contract being awarded. They don't care to see what happens after that.

The mayor and the commissioner of the Salem Corporation are responsible to this ugly look of the city, and they SHOULD wake up and see if they can improve the cleanliness of the city, otherwise they don't deserve to be the mayor or the commissioner. Period.

Even Thiruvagoundanoor Byepass also needs an flyover. Last Monday i could see the traffic from this byepass till Kandampatti Railway bridge. Same in the other way as well.

The stretches from Thumbipadi (near Poosaripatti) to Kuranguchavadi and Kuranguchavadi to Seelanaickenpatti roundtana were built by NHAI using its domestic funds.

If these stretches were given on DBOT basis to private firms (like now), surely we would have got flyovers at Steel Plant road junction, Kuranguchavadi, State Bank colony circle, Thiruvagoundanoor, Kandhampatti and Kondalampatti circles in the city.

There is no service lane in between Kondalampatti and Seelanaickenpatti circles. There are lot of automobile workshops, vehicle dealers and warehouses in this stretch. Hardly, we could use single lane on either side.

Also, the traffic is double on this particular 3 km stretch. CBE, Erode bound vehicles from Chennai and Trichy, Madurai bound vehicles from Bangalore are using this stretch. They should have provided service lane on this busy stretch.

^^ The main purpose of this interchange is to allow Bangalore - Coimbatore/Kochi, Chennai - Coimbatore/Kochi traffic on both directions. At present, vehicles in these routes go via the congested Kondalampatty road which forms the old NH47. There should be necessary sign boards placed at Kondalampatty to direct the vehicles to take this interchange, which will reduce the time taken.

And, Kondalampatty, being a major stop for public buses, I believe they will continue to take the old route. Long distance buses will surely skip.

Hope the train comes to Salem around 09.00 in the upward direction and reaches Salem around 19.30 in the downward direction.

I looks Tiruppur, Erode stops are not added in TT now, but surely those stoppages will be introduced during introduction.

2hrs 30min would be the running time b/w CBE and SA being a SF train. So in all probably the train will arrive at SA around in 08:30AM towards Tirupathy and in down direction may be around 19:45.

But it will follow Chennai Intercity closely.

The doubling of Ennore- Athipet section would be completed by September. As the doubling of Chengalpattu – Villupuram section would take time, the zone had decided to go for patch doubling between certain stations in the section to avoid crossing of trains. A new railway line was being laid to Velankanni from Nagore for the benefit of pilgrims and would become operational soon. Namakkal town would be brought into the railway map by this financial year end as work on a new line between Salem and Namakkal was in progress.

CHENNAI: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has found two significant platinum prospects in Tamil Nadu, according to Santha Sheela Nair, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Mines.

The two prospects are in Sittampundi of Namakkal district (covering Karungalpatti, Chettiyampalaiyam and Tasamapalaiym blocks) and Mettupalayam of Coimbatore (Solavanur, Mallanayakkampalaiyam and Karappadi blocks).

Describing them as “good discoveries,” Ms Nair told reporters on Thursday that “we are at the scientific stage where there is an evidence of substantial deposits of platinum which needs to be explored further to understand the exact location and quantities.”

The GSI was engaged in the exploratory work for the last three years. As of now, exploration was carried out up to 30 metres. If explored further, – say 200 to 300 metres , scientists of the GSI were of the view that "the potential will be even greater, both in quantity and quality,” the Mines Secretary said. Earlier, in the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Ms. Nair and senior officials of the State government at the Secretariat, GSI Director-General N.K. Datta and Tamil Nadu Minerals (TAMIN) Chairman and Managing Director K. Manivasan signed a memorandum of understanding.

Ms. Nair said the MoU was signed to facilitate further exploration of mineral development of the State. By associating with the GSI, the TAMIN would be able to diversify its activities. At present, the organisation was focussing on granites.

Pointing out that there were greater possibilities for collaboration with the State agency, N.P. Nathan, senior scientist in the GSI, said other minerals such as limestone, magnesite and iron ore could be covered. The Union Secretary reiterated that many more levels had to be crossed before reaching the stage of mining. Under the existing constitutional framework, mineral wealth belonged to States, which would receive royalties.

Durai Murugan, Law Minister, and K. Shanmugam and Rajeev Ranjan, Principal Secretaries for Finance and Industries, were present when the MOU was signed.

^^Same news from expressbuzz (http://expressbuzz.com/states/tamil-nadu/decks-cleared-for-platinum-mining/186303.html)

The Tamil Nadu Minerals Ltd (TAMIN) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Geological Research Centre to exploit platinum deposits in the State for setting up new industries.
The MoU was signed by K Manivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, TAMIN and N K Dutta, Chairman of the Indian Geological Research Centre in the presence of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Secretariat.
In TN, there is a vast scope for prospecting for Gold, Platinum Group of Elements (PGE), base metals and molybdenum, an official release here said and added that the Centre, during the last three years, had conducted extensive research and found deposits of platinum in the Mettupalayam- Namakkal region.
PGE are confined to layered ultramafic intrusions. The PGE occurs in layered chromite bearing ultramafic ultrabasic complexes in Sithampoondi Complex in Namakkal district, Sirapalli ultrabasic rocks in Namakkal district and Bhavani layered complex in Erode and Coimbatore districts. The MoU was signed to explore the commercialisation of the white gold, by setting up related industries.

Bus Services

The dumb TNSTC Salem doesn't seem to have any vision connecting places. They need to seriously think about introducing a service between Yercaud Foothills to Omalur, via Gorimedu, Central Jail, Hasthampatti Circle, Sarada College, Fairlands, Five roads, Kurangu Chavadi, Mamangam, Govt Engg College and Periyar University. There are thousands of people commuting from the Yercaud road stretch towards this route, and they always have to change buses either at Hasthampatti or Old Bus Stand.

Similarly there can be lot more useful routes introduced.

Also the people of these areas don't seem to be opening their mouth the get the much needed services, and have just been contended with what is existing.

For running new Steel Melting Shop of Salem Steel Plant

SALEM: Union Minister of Steel Virbhadra Singh has urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to “supply an additional 39 MVA of power for running the new Steel Melting Shop” of Salem Steel Plant (SSP) so that it could go on stream as envisaged.

Responding to the letter, which the Chief Minister wrote, on the issue of providing employment opportunities to the family members of those who had given lands for establishing Salem Steel Plant, the Union Minister pointed out that the SSP management had made a request to the Government of Tamil Nadu for the supply of additional power, which, he said was under consideration. “I would be grateful if you look into this matter for ensuring that the augmented facilities at the Plant go on stream,” he said.

While welcoming the Chief Minister's idea of having separate employment exchange for the Plant and the family members who seek employments, the Minister said that preferences had been given to the displaced persons who gave their lands for the Plant.

The Rs. 1,902-crore expansion project of the Salem Steel Plant (SSP), a special steels unit of the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), is expected to be commissioned by September this year.

The commissioning will enable SSP to get into the production of stainless steel slabs.

SSP pioneered the supply of wider-width stainless steel sheets and coils in India.

It also had the country's first top-of-the-line stainless steel blanking facility with a capacity of 3,600 tonnes of coin blanks, utility blanks and circles. SSP is also well-known for the production of a variety of specially designed finishes which find application in architectural uses like, cladding of building facades, doors, windows, kitchen sinks, staircases and elevators, decorative steel laminates as also in panelling of buses and EMU coaches.

SAIL sources told The Hindu that commissioning of few of the equipment had been done and the “remaining equipment will be commissioned in a phased manner in about two months.” While the equipment in the steel melting shop will be commissioned at one-go, those in the cold rolling mill will be commissioned in phases. Power problems have held up the execution of the expansion project.

The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in September 2008 after getting its environment clearance in April. Kajamalai Reserve Forest is located four km south of the project.

----
----
The expansion plan envisages increase in capacity of hot rolled coils and sheets from three lakh tonnes now to 3.7 lakh tonnes, and a doubling of the 70,000-tonne capacity of cold rolled coils and sheets and one-lakh tonne capacity of hot rolled annealed and pickled products. Coins and blanks capacity would remain same at 6,000-tonne annually.

Road to temple on Kumaragiri Hills to be tar-topped

The mud road leading to Sri Kumaragiri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple on Kumaragiri Hills, will be tar-topped for the benefit of devotees and tourists.

Devotees and members of the Temple's Trustees' Board under the guidance of its Chairman A.A. Arumugam contributed Rs. 28.27 lakhs while government through Salem Corporation contributed Rs. 56.63 lakhs under the ‘Namakkau Naame' scheme for the project for which works had begun.

Mr. Arumugam said that with the help of devotees and members of Trustee Board, a mud road at a cost of Rs. 26 lakhs was laid in the hills in 2000. Later they formed Arulmigu Kumaragiri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Narpani Mandram for providing facilities to devotees who visit temple located inside the city limits. The mud road also was maintained by the Small Hill Roads Committee.

Later it was decided to convert the same into a pucca road for which the District administration also extended assistance.

The works at the total cost of Rs. 84.80 lakhs would be taken up in three phases. Bhoomi poojas were performed for the same on Wednesday in which Panamarathupatti MLA A. Rajendran and others took part.

^^ Hindu Version...

SALEM: The first of the four steam engines to augment the services of the Nilgiris Mountain Railway will be commissioned by December this year so that the reliability of the heritage train services to the hill station of Udhagamandalam will be ensured, said the Salem Divisional Railway Manager P.N. Ram.

Talking to the media here on Thursday, Mr. Ram said that the Railways had already placed orders for 4 steam engines with the Tiruchi Golden Rock Workshop to bolster the aging fleet of the Mountain Railways. “Once these new engines join, the reliability of the hill train service of the Nilgiris Mountain Railways will go up,” he said.

Regarding Salem–Karur new broad gauge line, he said that sufficient funds had been allotted and works were going on unhindered. “By March 2011, the Salem–Namakkal sector will be completed,” he said and added houses for officers in Railway Quarters in Salem had been completed.

Mr. Ram said that as the volume of train operations had increased in Salem Junction, the division had taken up the construction of two more platforms to the existing three in operation. As the works had been completed on the new platform, adjacent to the entrance, the administration is awaiting clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

“Once he clears it the ‘Platform 1' will become operational.” A new island platform on the other side would be taken up shortly for which tender had been called and work allotted. “But this platform cannot be used unless a Foot Over Bridge connecting all these platforms is built for which work would be taken up shortly,” he added.

For physically challenged persons, lifts in Salem Junction would be installed and the same would become operational during this financial year itself, i.e. before March 31, 2011. He said that a face-lift would be given to the Junction building befitting the stature of a station serving the Divisional Headquarters. “The circulating area will be made larger and congestion free,” he said.

He said in the year 2009-10, the Division had earned Rs.417.56 crore, 12.15 per cent increase over the previous year. During the quarter of April to June 2010, the earning was Rs.104 crore, which is 10 per cent more than the corresponding period of last year.

This was very much expected. This is the big mistake our project executors and planners do. They spend hundreds of crores in building such a huge structures, but can't shed out some money to place proper direction boards.

There needs to be huge overhead signboards at
1. Kandampatty towards Kondalampatty, to direct vehicles to use the upcoming interchange in the next 200 meters, for going towards Coimbatore.
2. Before Kondalampatty rouind-about, while coming from Seelanaickenpatty on the by-pass road, to direct Coimbatore bound vehicles NOT to turn LEFT at the round-about, instead drive straight ahead and use the interchange which is 1km ahead.
3. Before Uthamacholapuram, while driving towards Salem, to direct ALL vehicles bound to Salem, Bangalore and Chennai, NOT to turn RIGHT towards Kondalampatty, instead drive straight and follow signals to their destinations just before the trumpet interchange.

If these are not properly done, and published, the ultimate intention of this interchange will get defeated.

BTW, Saravanan, were you at the spot when the accident took place?

But the sign board is placed right at the beginning of the ramp. The driver must have noticed the ramp just after crossing it. In confusion he must have attempted to turn onto the ramp and dashed on the rails seperating the main carriage-way and the ramp.

Whatever happened, it is very ridiculous. The driver should have proceeded forward and must have made an U turn at the Kondalampatty round-about. Or, if there is not much traffic, he should have reverse drove and then took the ramp.

Aadi 1 - Cocunut firing festival in Salem.

I am not sure whether this type of festival is celebrated in other parts of TN

Yesterday while I crossing this flyover interchange I noticed 3 small sign boards kept with 100 meters distance(total 300 meters) each on both side of the roads before the lane change with clear font and with reflection sticker. So if a driver missed out first sign board he can be noticed by next two sign boards in next 200 meters. So it is very much sufficient for a vehicle to make a lane change.

But any how if we have a big sign boards before the divider it will be easy to all the vehicle to take the correct diversion.

The Public Works Department, under the Sarabanga Scheme, has undertaken the work of renovation and repair of Raja Vaikkal, which has been converted into a massive cesspool of garbage and silt in the city.

“The works are progressing well,” said Assistant Executive Engineer Vedanayagam.

Residents have been demanding that the channel should be cleaned up, for it has been silted up and turned into a major garbage dump yard, resulting in various issues related to health.

Mosquitoes have been rendering the areas through which the channel goes, difficult to live in. Rainy seasons have remained nightmares.

Heeding their demand, Veerapandi MLA A. Raja allotted a sum of Rs. 2.70 crore from his MLA Development Fund.

Works were taken up near Kondalampatti for a distance of 1.64 k.m.

Concrete bunds were being constructed and slabs provided.

Once the works were completed, the problems of locals would be solved, said Srinivasan of Salem Corporation.

Dear Vijayan,

I was not there at the time of accident.

I have noticed many times that this kind of mistake is happen in that place is very common, though the sign boards are there in the right side. Also in this route most of the vehicles are goes to left side (towards Bangalore), but that road flyover is constructed in two lane; whereas, the less traffic side flyover ie Chennai direction is constructed is three lane. I mean, the flyover is not given equal important to Channai and Bangalore Road/Diversion, like Seelanaikanpatty Bye Pass Flyover (Both are 3 laned Chennai & Madurai Diversion).

Similarly, at the end of the Chennai diversion they have given adequate road Parallelly to join to NH-7. Where as for the Bangalore Direction, it should be extended Parallelly to Kandampatty Bye pass or at least to the Petrol bank near to Thirumani Muthuaru River to Join NH-7. But it directly connects to NH-7 very next to Ford Car Show room. This will cause frequent accident at the place where NH-7 and NH-47 is meet.

Still now from Bangalore to NH-47 is nearly half of the vehicles particularly lorries are not using the trumpet interchange but it uses Kondalampatty byepass for diversion, similarly vice-versa. So, Salem City Traffic Police take initiate to completely not allow to use Kondalampatty town route to pass the lorries.

Also, the NH-47 is constructed with the future plan of expansion to 6-laning. Where as at the place of interchange, the NH-7 is now 4 laned and the flyover is constructed very adjacent to the 4 laning. So, even in future, the NH-7 is 6 laned. The road cannot be further extened in the place of flyover, and also our NH-7 median is very very narrow. Even if any accidents occurs, it is very difficult to manage.

Since the median is very narrow in NH-7, they have to be place placed Mercury/Sodium light from Seelanaikanpatty byepass to Near Korankuchavady ( Next to AVR Roundana), but they have place only something like street light, and I don’t know what level it is useful for public.

Finally as you said, it need a huge overhead sign boars, between Kondampatty bye-pass to NH-47 Diversion, Kondalampatty Byepass to NH-47 Diversion, and fom NH-47 to Chennai/Bangalore Diversion.

Hence, they have to consider some other pain areas also, including bridges and flyovers where ever it is necessary in near future to overcome these problems to improve Salem ExpressWay Infrastructure.

Regards,

Saravanan
Salem.

^^ Very well said, Saravanan.

I was also wondering why couple of ramps are 3-lanes (From Bangalore towards Coimbatore, and From Coimbatore towards Chennai), and the other two (From Chennai towards Coimbatore, and from Coimbatore towards Bangalore).

As you rightly mentioned the NH47 merges with NH7 near the Ford showroom very instantly. It is a big planning mistake.

THere is a huge overhead signboard just before Uthamacholapuram when one drives towards Salem. But it has a misleading information to turn RIGHT for Chennai at Uthamacholapuram. The sign board should direct dirvers to proceed forward and use the interchange to go to Chennai.

Salem needs direct city buses from newbusstad to other parts of city.Like we need direct buses from newbusstand to yecaud adivaram, yercaud adivaram to selnaikanpatty, kondalampatti, ammapet. This will reduce the hard ship of poor citizens.wont the authorities look into this simple problem?other citites has good local city bus connection to various parts of their respective towns.(for eg>kovai, madurai etc..)
The dumb city bus transport dept has to look into this seriously.

SALEM IT PARK - Administrative building

I think we need better representation. the Administrative block of 1lakh sqft will be built in all IT Parks in all Cities in TN except in SALEM for now. It is sad and we need better representation in this case.

This building is much needed to encourage small players who may not be able to build on its own but lease or buy the required space to start their operations immediately. We need to take this issue to our minister Mr VSA and to IT minister Ms Kothai to reconsider SALEM IT Park. It deserves this building for sure.

i think salem it park is a half hearted attemt/election gimmick im afraid.becoz it doesnt seem to have an sytematic schedule and approach.it was started hastily in a haphazard manner with some pressure from our local minister.okay, hats off to him for initiating it but from now on he has to push this forward in a more professional manner as in other towns of TN.agree?
