Anybody over 1cr of revenue in IT and related category can get the membership. NASSCOM is a powerful association in India governing Indian IT industries and providing guidance, information and mentorship. I think some colleges gets the membership to show their association with NASSCOM and Information Technology for obvious reasons.

Like wise, Muthayammal Engineering College (A unit of Muthayammal Educational Trust and Research Foundation) From Rasipuram which is about 25KM from Salem is also a member.

What NASSCOM do
-Set Strategic direction for industry
-Policy advocacy for Industry growth.
-Best practices, sharing & collaboration
-International partnerships & affiliation
-Workforce development
-Sustainability

SAIL junks steel unit for wind energy plant
SUBHASH NARAYAN, PARUL CHHAPARIA
Posted: Monday, Aug 29, 2011 at 0409 hrs IST
Tags: Special Economic Zone | SAIL | Public Sector | IL&FS | Green Infra | Moser Baer

New Delhi: Public sector steel major SAIL has dropped its plan to set up a stainless steel special economic zone (SEZ) at Salem in Tamil Nadu. Instead, the company has decided to set up a wind energy plant to meet its renewable energy requirement.
The government-owned steel major has already invited the expression of interests (EoIs) from private energy firms to develop the wind energy unit, according to sources privy to the development.

The plan to drop the SEZ initiative has ben taken due to unviability of such a project in the changed economic environment. The company’s partners for SEZ had earlier walked out from the project citing similar reasons.

According to industry sources companies like IL&FS, Green Infra and Moser Baer are among the renewable energy firms that have shown their interests in the project. “We are in the process of studying these bids. A decision will be taken only after that,” a SAIL official aware of the development told FE.

The decision to go for an energy plant comes after almost four years of planing and re-planning by the steelmaker which had been wanting to setup a SEZ at Salem in an area spread over 250 acres near its existing stainless steel facility. The SEZ project was then considered attractive as company had huge tract of surplus land at the plant with good infrastructure to support exports.

The company official maintained that in the present market scenario where the demand for steel is flat, it would not be viable to set up a single-product SEZ.

The change in the plan would help the company to meet its renewable energy requirement. Under the national action plan on climate change (NAPCC), the government makes it mandatory for power consumers to increase their renewable purchase obligation by 1% every year to the base-line of 5% fixed in 2009-10 till 2020.

The SAIL official said, this was the main reason why the company decided to shift to a wind energy plant. Moreover, the location is suitable for a wind farm due to high intensity and consistency of wind, a prime requirement for setting up wind projects.

SAIL produces about 700 mega watt (mw) energy every year through its captive units.

Of this, about 35 mw are sourced from renewable. The company plans to produce 80 mw renewable energy by 2015-16.

The Salem’s SEZ plan has not been going SAIL’s way soon after it was announced. In 2007, SAIL had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation (IIDC) to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop, operate and maintain a SEZ dedicated to the steel sector. However, IIDC walked out of it citing the then economic crisis. Later, the steel company revived its plans and invited fresh EOIs for the joint venture project, which also seemed to have not worked out.

The wind energy plant would be significant for SAIL as it is in the process of R72,000-crore modernisation, which is expected to get completed in couple of years. With the expansion, SAIL’s energy requirement would go up tremendously.

“With our energy consumption going up, we also need to enhance our renewable energy production accordingly. Therefor, having a wind energy plant makes more sense,” the official said.

TN’s ambitious programme to promote IT-SEZs hits roadblock

CHENNAI, SEPT 25:
The Tamil Nadu government’s ambitious programme to promote Information Technology SEZs in Tier-II cities has hit a roadblock, as infrastructure bottlenecks have forced several firms to reschedule their plans and others to pull out.

IT majors like HCL Technologies, Satyam Ltd and Sutherland Global Services, which were allotted land at two SEZs near Madurai and Tiruchirappalli, have asked for a refund of their lease amounts, citing infrastructure and transport bottlenecks.

The two IT-SEZs at Madurai are among eight set up by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu near major cities in the state at a cost of over Rs 200 crore to promote investments in Tier-II cities.

The others are at Sholinganallur, near Chennai, Vilankurichi (near Coimbatore), Vadapalanji-Kinnimangalam (in Madurai), Navalpattu (in Tiruchirapalli), Gangaikondan (in Tirunelveli), Jagir-Ammapalayam (in Salem) and Viswanathapuram (in Hosur).

Asked about the issue, a government official said they would undertake aggressive marketing to promote these IT-SEZs. “We will take up marketing campaigns to promote the SEZs,” he said.

Really? I don't think so. History is all about what we document and how we document it.

http://www.tamilselvi.com/History-Of-Salem.html

Apart from that in modern days too Salem has unique things, famous for mangoes, you've got mettur dam. The details related to how it was constructed and its technicalities could make it interesting history. Do the same thing for SAIL. Look for prominent personalities. Look for freedom fighters from this area. All you have to do is look around!!

I suggest someone start a history thread here and make it a living document. Today's situation will be history in 50 years :) No place in the world is without its roots. Not documented? Perhaps, but definitely you should be able to figure out the uniqueness. If there is no documented uniqueness for a city of million, I seriously suggest people start collecting stuff and consolidate it here.

City of future

By D Govardan Nov 02 2011
Tags: Real Estate

Southern states seem to have caught on the importance of Tier II cities. To the recent list of 36 future cities, culled out by Girem, an urban planning body, south contributes 13Recently, Girem, an independent body with focus on urban planning and real estate, unveiled a list of 36 future cities across states at its 4th Girem Leadership Summit. These future cities were culled out from a large pool of short listed cities by a panel of experts who have selected these cities based on various parameters such as population size and the strength of the education and culture.

Interestingly, out of the 36 future cities, the top three — Thir*u*van*anthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode – are from Kerala. Of the top 10 cities, four – Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai and Salem – are from Tamil Nadu and five more cities – Mangalore, Belgaum and Mysore in Karnataka. Along with Vishakapatnam and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh and Puduchery south India takes its contribution to 13 out of the 36 future potential cities.

So what makes – South India so special, when it comes to development in future?

“Culture, cosmopolitan outlook, quality of human resources and strong educational system are the key factors that make south India a strong investment destination,” said Shyam Sundar S Pani, president of Girem.

According to him, in spite of technological advancements, business is human driven and these cities were selected based on the above-mentioned parameters along with educational institutions existing in those cities as well as the population. “We will connect with the city authorities and explain to them the required framework to make these cities more proactive to attract investors, by improving standards of living and public services,” Pani added.

K Purushothaman, regional director of Nasscom (Tamil Nadu and Kerala) elaborates the strengths of southern cities. “Kerala is the only state to have three international airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode, and hence connectivity is its biggest strength. The state is also known for education and high literacy rate. It is already on the world tourism map and Brand Kerala is well established in the minds of foreign investors,” he says.

Chennai-based property developer, Akshaya Homes — which recently took a new name for itself, Akshaya Uncom promise — has ambitious pan-south Indian plans that involve tapping the emerging potential and also enter into new areas such as creating infrastructure for healthcare and education. “We are very confident about the growth potential available in south India, especially in smaller cities. Besides Chennai, we are already present in Coimbatore and by the end of this year we would have covered Tiruchi, followed by Madurai. Within next three years, we would have made our presence felt across south India and focus will be to develop mini-townships. We will simultaneously create infrastructure facilities for healthcare and education, keeping in tune with the economic developments that some of these southern cities are likely to achieve,” says T Chitty Babu, managing director of Akshaya.

Referring to prospective cities in Tamil Nadu that have immense scope of becoming future growth hubs, if given the right push, Purushothaman says, “A city like Coimbatore is already well established and has attracted a lot of big brands. Nearly 40 per cent of recruitment for the IT industry already takes place from in and around the city. For leading IT player, Cognizant, Coimbatore is already a big destination employing around 5,000 people. The company has its second largest hub in the country in the city. In addition, MNCs like Ford Business and Robert Bosch are looking to expand their existing operations in the city.” Coimbatore has an international airport and employee cost is much less, when compared to other established cities and established infrastructure also favours the city to attract new investment.

On the other hand, Tiruchi is a well-established educational hub, thanks to the presence of NIT and IIM among other institutes. “However, Madurai, where the employee cost is very low and has very good institutions in and around, is yet to grow. Thanks to the support from the new government in the state, it is sure to grow soon,” he says. In the case of Salem, the proximity to Bangalore and availability of good manpower are attracting companies. First America and CapGemini are two international companies that already have a base there, as is the case with Honeywell in Madurai, Purus*hot*haman added.

Not only industries and property developers, the city has lot of opportunities for banking and financial sector players as well. Tier II and III centres are important markets for home loans business. There are a lot of jobs being created in the markets and migration from villages to the towns as a result of these jobs, make a case for increased housing finance requirement.

“In tier II and III markets, the supply is limited and the demand is huge. There is a lot of economic growth in the smaller markets and so the urge to purchase their first house is also widespread,” says VK Sharma, CEO, LIC Housing Finance.

Whether it is Trichy, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli or Erode in Tamil Nadu or Palakkad, Kottayam or Thrissur in Kerala or Vizag, Vijay*awada or Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, there is a lot of economic activity and real estate development.

“In fact Coimbatore is one of the hottest investment destinations in the south because of factors like industrial growth, proximity to other important cities, pleasant weather and so on. It is a market with a capacity to absorb Rs 80 crore home loan disbursals per month. We see a lot of investor interest in the market,” says Srinivas Acharya, managing director, Sundaram BNP Paribas Home Finance.

“Coimbatore is a tier II city with tier I capabilities,” agrees Anand Pu*rusothaman, CEO of IT solutions company Payoda. The company was the first to occupy the TIDEL Park IT complex in the city. It did look at other options but settled for Coimbatore because of the several advantages it offers. The decision started to pay off in the initial months itself, he adds. Work culture is the biggest advantage. Employees in tier II cities are more loyal compared with their counterparts in metro cities. Attrition is much lower, as the workforce largely prefers to stay in their native locations.

“Initially, we took up 17,000 sq ft in the park. Encouraged by the positive experience, we intend to further expand within the complex,” he says.

Bhamathi Prakash, managing director of Merrill Technology Services India, says Coimbatore is an ideal destination for not only for IT companies but also for others in several ways including the salubrious weather conditions and rich talent pool. The city has over 25 engineering colleges, 18 polytechnic institutions, 72 colleges teaching humanities, two medical colleges and one law school.

It is not only manufacturing, IT and property development, even retailers, especially those dealing with gold jewellery, see major growth opportunity in south India, more specifically in the emerging cities in the region.

South India accounts for 40 per cent of the total gold consumption of the country, with Tamil Nadu being the biggest consumer followed by Kerala. No wonder why most of the large organised players have been spreading across the key cities in the region.

Some of the organised gold jewellers started off their expansion in metros, but for their next level of growth, they are focusing on tier II and III cities. The growing purchasing power and the aspiration for branded jewellery have been beckoning the big brands to these cities.

As per the rating agency Crisil, tier-II and III towns will drive growth for the branded gold jewellery retailers over the medium-term as around two-thirds of their new outlets will be in such towns. Crisil had rated 63 gold jewellery retailers, which collectively account for 20 per cent by revenue of the gold jewellery retailed in India in 2010-11.

According MP Ahmed, chairman of Malabar Gold, the company is planning to open 40 stores in Tamil Nadu in five years and most of them will come up in tier II cities like Co*imbatore, Salem and Trichy.

Of the 29 stores of Gold Plus, the mass-market brand of Titan, 17 are in Tamil Nadu. Gold Plus is a brand specifically meant for the tier II and tier III cities.

“Of the 14 stores to be opened by Joyalukkas in two years, 13 will be coming up in tier II and III cities. These cities contribute 55 per cent of the revenue and this could go up to 65 per cent in two years,” said Nandakumar T, CFO of Joyalukkas. Joyalukkas is in the process of opening stores in Trichy, Kozhikode, Thiruvantanpuram and at the Lullu Hyper mall in Kochi. zz

Capacity growth of LNG plant on track

KOCHI: Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has given its final nod to Petronet LNG Ltd's proposal for expanding the capacity of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Puthuvypu, off Kochi from 2.5 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes.

"This was the only clearance that was pending for the expansion proposal. We had obtained all other clearances earlier," AK Balyan, managing director and CEO, Petronet LNG told TOI here.

"The project is on track and we are planning to commission it towards the end of 2012," he added.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 4000 crore, and Petronet which is a consortium promoted by state-owned energy firms such as GAIL (India) Limited, ONGC, Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, is funding it through internal resources and borrowing.

Balyan says, "The entire initial design of the project was for 5 million tonnes. Hence, only few additions will be required for expanding the capacity", Balyan said.

The Expert Appraisal Committee of MoEF said it had noted Petronet's statement that augmentation of the capacity from 2.5 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes will not induct additional environmental issues and that the planned system will take care of the overall requirement of the facility.

"However, impacts if any arising out of increased activities to meet the additional capacity shall be brought to the notice of the Ministry with appropriate mitigation measures that will be put in place, to ensure that the given commitment of 'no additional impact' is maintained in letter and spirit," a committee statement said.

The MoEF panel has also stipulated that 'at least 5% of the total cost of the project shall be earmarked towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and item-wise details along with time bound action plan shall be prepared and submitted to the Ministry prior to the commencement of the project. Implementation of such program shall be ensured accordingly in a time bound manner."

The project will be able to supply LNG to states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu apart from downstream industries in Kerala like NTPC power plant at Kayamkulam and FACT, Kalamassery. It has already tied up a 1.5-tonne LNG supply agreement with Exxon Mobil Australia and has been in talks with other LNG suppliers.

GAIL is laying the pipelines for gas distribution in two phases. In the first phase, it will connect to industrial consumers in Kerala. In the second, it will connect to Bangalore and Mangalore. The pipeline to Bangalore would pass through Coimbatore and Salem. The first line for industrial consumers in Kalamassery and Aluva is likely to be completed by early next year, Balyan disclosed.

Interestingly, Kerala government has appealed to the Centre to raise the capacity of the plant to 15 million tonnes, considering the projected LNG demands for future.

The state has also requested Petronet to set up a gas-based power plant near the project, promising land for both these proposals. But Petronet sources said these proposals are unlikely to be considered till the plant under construction gets stabilized

‘Aadhaar' launched in Salem

‘People have started understanding uniqueness of the project'

‘Aadhaar' – the Unique Identification (UID) will emerge as a pervasive instrument across the nation since it is going to be an authenticated source of identification for all those who will possess them, said K K Sharma, Assistant Director General of Unique Identification Authority of India, Government of India.

Launching the scheme in Salem in association with Vee Technologies, a multinational IT-cum-BPO firm, which is the project's enrolment agency for Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra along with project registrar, the Bank of India, here on Monday, Mr. Sharma hoped that the project would “go beyond the 2014 target of 60 crore population. The pointers show that people have started understanding the uniqueness of the project and come forward to get themselves enrolled,” he said.

The UID card had been issued to 6.5 crore people till today and 13 crore more were waiting to be issued. Mr. Sharma pointed out that it was very simple process with basic personal details and the 12-digit number would be issued through India Post to one's address. “This can be quoted for any reference to get one's identity verified. This will be enormously useful for instance in banking sector and other areas such as obtaining a vehicle licence,” he said.

In Tamil Nadu, close to five lakh people had already received their UID while 10 lakh had already been enrolled for the same. Such ‘generic identification numbers' would also enable the State and Central governments to go for a critical review of the freebies and public distribution scheme where nearly 20 to 30 per cent of leakages and seepages were being reported.

“This can also serve as a preventive mechanism against the abuse of any welfare scheme,” he said.

Collector K. Maharabushanam said that the project was a unique one that aimed to minimise many shortcomings in the administrative workings of the bureaucracy. “This can eliminate middlemen and also serve as a deterrent to illegal and anti-social activities.” He assured the UID nodal officers all support from the district administration.

Those who spoke included Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions, C. Valliappa, Secretary A. Dhirajlal, Zonal Manager, Bank of India, Coimbatore zone, S. Chandrasekaran, Chief Educational Officer N.K. Raaja Rajan, Director, TMS Eye Hospital, Lakshmi Siddharthan, and CEO, Vee Technologies, V. Chockalingam and Executive Director V. Thiagarajan

City of future

By D Govardan Nov 02 2011

Joyalukkas is in the process of opening stores in Trichy, Kozhikode, Thiruvantanpuram and at the Lullu Hyper mall in Kochi. zz

DONT UNDERESTIMATE SALEM AIRPORT AGAIN BY HASTY REACTIONS
Dear mr.TVMH,
You seem to be lightning fast in giving your reaction.
calm down sir, try to give a balanced view by considering various aspects pl.

The airservice issue to salem from KF was there right from day one because of odd timings(2.50 pm from chennai and 4.20pm from salem) and ticket fare,Rs.2800/-.Despite its errotic service,it had a Average load factor of about 40-45%,55% to 60% during weekends.

The fare was high compared with real low cost service like spicejet and indigo.
Even Today, you could now get a flight ticket to mumbai from coimbatore for just Rs.2400/ - even in the same KF flight. For you info;my friend from salem has booked his ticket to mumbai from coimbatore for just Rs.2350/-one way-travel date:12/nov/2011.
Spicejet's is offering current service to tuticorin from chennai for
just Rs.1499/- only.
So,dear TVMH,just wait for the real lowcost flights like SJ to come to salem,we are all going to see the turnaround of salem airport.Im,sure spicejet's salem plan is in the cards,Sun groups are known for their smartness.agree?

KF is not jus pulling off its flight service to salem because of the poor patronage. KF has already stopped its service for few other destinations also.. and the number will be increased
KF is running in big loss.. i've seen more than two of its aircrafts grounded and parked in the hangar region in Chennai airport couple of weeks before..

a cheque given by KF is been bounced, then look at the financial situation of the company..

Hope this bailout will help to resume Salem Service..

Kingfisher cries out for help; govt may bail it out

Union Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi hinted on Friday that the government might step in and save the day for Kingfisher Airlines which is facing serious financial trouble.

The Vijay Mallya-owned Kingfisher Airlines had earlier in the day sought government help for a bailout even as it continued its flight curtailment spree for the fifth consecutive day and its stocks plummeted by over 19 per cent to an all-time low but recovered slightly later.

The civil aviation minister reportedly said he would help the airline in whatever way he could as he did not want it to shut down.

Ravi, news reports say, went on to suggest that he would speak with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and ask him to request banks and other lenders to help infuse funds at low interest rates into the ailing airline.

The seriousness of the crisis was underlined by the urgent request Kingfisher owner Vijay Mallya made to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi to help Kingfisher in infusion of funds through banks at low interest rates, besides other concessions in line with what Air India was getting, sources said.

Some 50 pilots and cabin crew did not turn up for duty by reporting sick as over 40 flights were cancelled across its network on Friday.

INTACH to focus on Salem's landmarks

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

The Salem Chapter of Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has initiated an innovative exercise to provide “better visibility” to the landmarks and signposts of historical and national importance in Salem city.

The exercise began on ‘Salem Day' (Nov. 1) since it was on this day in 1866 the Salem Municipality was formed. Great leaders such as Rajagopalachariyar and Rao Bahadur G. Ramaswamy Mudaliar had served this local body, which had celebrated its centenary in 1966, as its heads.

INTACH hit upon this unique concept when it found many of these important landmarks in a state of neglect. After obtaining necessary permission from the authorities concerned, it has identified the monuments of historical importance and decided to install commemorative plaques near them. “These plaques will have details on the significance of these landmarks. We will also maintain them,” says INTACH's co-convener S. Sharavanan.

The exercise of erecting a plaque began with Rao Bahadur Ramaswamy Mudaliar Memorial lamp post in the city. The post was erected to commemorate the visit of the then Municipal chairman Ramaswamy Mudaliar to London in 1885. Being a munisif, he led a delegation of Indian leaders to England to seek redressal of their grievances against the British Government's Arms Act.

As a member of the Indian National Congress he was instrumental in forming the Madras Mahajana Sabha. He was also the founder editor of Madras Law Journal in 1891. He was elected chairman of the Salem Municipality in 1895. His contribution to society and Salem particularly was immense.

“The commemorative lamp post remained unnoticed for long. Our efforts will aim at making the younger generation visit the pages of history to know about the significance of such importance landmarks and places around them,” Mr. Sharavanan says.

Nevertheless, we have taken note of your suggestion and same has been shared with our Network Planning Division, who will examine the same keeping in mind our aircraft fleet, economic viability, and requisite clearance from the authorities.

We will update our website www.jetairways.com in case of any development in this regard.

"Right On Time Everytime"

Sir/Madam,

We are eagerly waiting for JetAirways service in Salem(SXV), Tamilnadu, India. Salem city has over 1.2 million population (U/A) and covers entire west region in Tamilnadu which is about over 15 million population. This may be an alternate to Bangalore which is very far from the city.

Kingfisher was flying for over two years. In spite of their awful service, inconvenient timings, and hard to rely on due to surprise/frequent cancellations, they had a decent patronage of 60-80% in the weekends and about 40% in the weekdays.

I heard there was a proposal from Spicejet but not sure when. However, I request Jet Airways, one of the India's premier airlines, to tap this huge potential in this Salem sector. This sector is one of the leading business center in this region and can very well be an alternate to Bangalore and Coimbatore airports.

I kindly request you to take favorable steps to for our mutual benefit. Please kindly update me if you have any plans, that will help IT and business community.

Thank you,

'Tintin' earns Rs.7.35 crore, highest Spielberg grosser in India
IANS | Nov 15, 2011, 12.12PM IST

The Adventures of Tintin
Animation movie "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn" has earned about Rs.7.35 crore over three days, making it the highest opening for any Steven Spielberg film in India.

The film released with over 350 prints in both English and Hindi in the 3D and 2D formats. Apart from the big cities, this is the first movie to open simultaneously in smaller centres like Alwar, Gwalior, Akola, Amravati, Madurai, Salem and Trichur.

"Not only is the animated genre gaining ground amongst all age groups in India, but Tintin is unique in the sense that the franchise is enjoyed and appreciated by a very wide audience right from kids to adults who grew up on Tintin," Kercy Daruwala, managing director, Sony Pictures India, said in a statement.

"There is an amazing passion for both the franchise and the film in India with even celebrities like Aamir Khan giving the film an enthusiastic thumbs-up. The film's collections have increased day upon day and we expect to see the film sustain strongly based on excellent word of mouth," Daruwala added.

"Tintin" fans can't stop heaping praise on the animated franchise and term it an intelligent film.

"There is not a dull moment in the movie. You never feel you are watching animated characters because they are so true to life. And at the same time it doesn't not step away from the Tintin cartoon," said Brishti Ganguly, a young school-going fan.

Praising the film, Anand V, another Tintin fan, said: "Spielberg has not made a predictable film. He has merged three-four Tintin comics in the movie in a very intelligent way. The characters are fantastic - Captain Haddock is lovable. All the characters live up to their images."

Thanks for your input. I don't think the demand is issue. Due to the distance from other cities to Salem which is a disadvantage at this point. Like Bangalore 200, Coimbatore 160, Trichy 130, Chennai 320 etc. They have good train and road connectivity. To create demand in Salem airport, the provider should out smart their alternatives. People might Argue that Distance from Trichy to Chennai is same as Salem. However, Trichy is a gateway to southern districts which don't have any alternatives.

But for Salem and around, people have too many alternatives. Good and bad. The good is, that is the reason the business flourish in this region like anything lead to proposal for Coimbatore-Salem Industrial corridor. Bad and only bad is Airport. Need somebody who has the guts to outsmart other alternatives. Also government should invest quickly to expand the airport. Salem's bad luck, NEPC did a wrong connectivity to Salem and Chenni. Made people to go to CBE to go to Chennai. And now, KF, struggling for cash, did a half baked approach by providing late mid day flight. People have loose a day or two by using their flight. No right sense people would prefer that kind of service. In spite of their very poor service, timings, irregularity etc., they enjoyed about 30-40% on weekdays and 60-80% on weekends. Business should be treated as business and not favors. Airline need to invest first to make money.

No one in this world will start a business that is destined to end up in a loss. How do you/KF think that people will patronize a flight service that starts at 2.50PM from Chennai? Salem is not a leisure destination for this matter for people to come at whatever timing is available.

Intended users of the flight service are businessmen, and the person whom you are arguing with in this forum is one among them (I had to reveal this to just to get your opinions corrected) who had been using the service a lot, and who would have always used the service had it continued.

What purpose does the flight serve by operating at odd timings? I know of several friends who really want to fly to Salem in the early mornings, especially people coming from international flights.

Early morning service from Chennai would serve two purposes - people from international flights arriving from midnight to early morning & businessmen travelling to Salem from Chennai.

Please keep your baseless arguments to yourself.

The roads near old busstand area and kitchipalayam side are damaged due to rain. They hope that private operators only solve the problems.

Traffic in NH-7 near salem bye-pass is an unsolved problem. This highway is the important one which connects the cities coimbatore, madurai, trichy and nellai to bangalore.Salem acts as transist hub with this highway. Many vehicles ply from round the clock. Also this highway connects NH-47 and NH-68 near salem. This road suffers from heavy traffic day to day.

Highway minister mr.edappadi palanisamy told that a huge fly over should be construct from steel plant crossing road to seelanaichan patti bye-pass.Also the other plan is to built a fly over near AVR round about and thiruvakoundanoor bye-pass.

But still now no response from anybody.what is the solution for this trafiic.

After the expansion of the road widening of the Highways everyone wants free flow of the traffic, but in Salem its in reverse due to poor study over this, the Hub city populated more than one million and Salem is the point( HUB ) for North -South -East - West Intersections, need a complete study over the passers then only find solution for this,
Soon, within 3-5 years the traffic starts in all sides areas like Ariyanur, Omalur, Karipatti, Malur . then how the city handles these traffic in future.

I remember when the Byepass completed in 1998, Seelanaikenpatti & Uthamacholapuram was nightmare that time and now its expanded to inner city Bye -pass intersection roads, if they solve city side, Highway will be effect.

Guys,
Any news about the status of new byepass connecting Seelanaickenpatti and Minnampalli? Its been pending for a long time.

Hope there are possiblities of development along that area if the road works get completed ,as few educational instuitions (like Maha enginnering college,Ganesh engineering collge,Swamy public school) and sacred place like Kandashramam already exist in that locality.

SALEM (EAST) REGION is still lagging in infrastructure and development while rest of salem grows at faster pace beyond the city limits.

Possible improvements for SALEM (EAST) REGION in future:
1)Construction of one more MOFUSSIL Bus stand (instead of expanding the present one) at the end of Military road (Poolavari vacant lands available after Sakthi Kailash college.

Doing the above ,buses to the Tirupattur,Vellore,Kallakurichi,Chidambaram,Pondichery and Chennai areas can be operated from here (forever without making temporary traffic plan for every 10 or 15 years)

Present Mofussil bus stand will cater services for Coimbatore/Kerala,Bangalore,Mysore,Madurai.Trichy.

2)Salem (East) Railway station (with minimal facilities) should be formed with bus services to the newly planned bus stand via this station (from main parts of the city)

3)Access should be given between planned ring road near Valasaiyur,Kannankurichi to newly planned bus stand

Benefits:Above plans will trigger the growth of the city equally in all directions and the below areas of Salem east zone will see more urbanisation.

1)Ponnamapet
2)Ammapet
3Valasaiyur
4)Udayapatti
5)Ayodhyapatnam
6)Foothills of Yercaud adjoining Kannankurichi (also includes lake)and Valasaiyur

Also Kumaragiri and Kandashramam will get facelift with more tourists for sure.

Traffic along the bye-pass (surrounding the city except Kondalampati - Narasothipatti stretch) will be smooth.

Its all my dream about Salem, but finalising and implementation lies in the hands of our government.

yes its necessary to built new bus terminous in salem city. But this can be built in ammapet to holly cross stretch. It might be helpfull in future days.

Might this place connects to old busstand very easily.because after omalur road ammapet only contains lots of town buses.

Hope this is useful to control the traffic inside the city such as ponnamapet gate, sundar lodge, four roads and new busstand.

What about the old bus stand, conjestion plays a main role in day to day life in town area. What is the solution for this area. The oldest part of the town but not maintained well as compared to other parts of the city.

Will they renewate this bus stand. If this happens also there may be traffic because lots of city buses ply through this area and also more number people croud here.

Now itself there is no place for buses for rasipuram, panaimarathupatti, sivathapuram and elampillai. Also ammapet bus also in the side of the bus stand and was conjested.

if they recreate bus stand here also the traffic will be more.In upcoming days it plays a major problem for the city.

Loggy and GVijayan, I found this article with the aid of google search....
.
.
Negatively impacted by high fuel prices, a weakening rupee and an “irrational” pricing environment in the domestic Indian market, SpiceJet reported an INR2.4 billion (USD48.0 million) net loss and loss before tax in the three months ended 30-Sep-2011 (2QFY2012).
.
.

http://www.centreforaviation.com/analysis/spicejet-reports-2q-loss-in-a-structurally-challenged-india-domestic-market-63104

So, the above stated reasons also must have affected the other airlines too that prevented the aviation companies to start or run services to Salem other than the reason that it is at odd timings...

Whatever happens, Salem will have an airport fully functional in the following years. In order this to happen quickly, they need to complete the north ring road and also another ring road from NH7 to poolampatti to omalur. This helps people avoid traffic and quickly reach the airport. Already these are in the proposal.

Given that the Nammakal bus stand proposed in Mudalaipatti, Salem road, will change the whole dynamics of it and Nammakal will become part of Salem Metropolitan in the long run. This will happen with the help of Rasipuram and Mallur will grow out to reach Salem limits. This is my thought.

Agriculture gets lion's share in credit plan

Banks will provide Rs. 2,275 crore credit for Salem district, an increase of 17 per cent over the last year, for its various development works for 2012-13.

The potential for bank credit, for 2012-13 at Rs. 2,274.99 crore has exceeded last year's target of Rs. 1,943.19 crore of which agriculture takes a lion's share.

Since the economy of the district is basically agrarian, Rs. 1,616.30 crore has been earmarked for agriculture sector, forming 71.10 per cent of the total priority sector lending.

Allocation to non-farm sector has been estimated at Rs. 190.68 crore, which formed 8.4 per cent of the total priority sector advances; other priority sectors like retail business, housing loan, consumption loan etc. comprise the balance 20.6 per cent.

Salem Collector K. Maharabushanam on Friday launched the Potential Linked Credit Plan (PLP), prepared by NABARD at the District Consultative Committee Meeting on Friday by handing over the first copy to G. Muthappan, Deputy General Manager, Circle Head, Indian Bank, Salem.

Earlier, V. Raju, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Salem while the presenting the document to the bankers covered the genesis of credit planning by banks, objectives of the document, and methodology followed in preparation of PLP.

He said that infrastructure already available and likely to be created in the near future, past trends in financing these activities by the banks and their credit absorption capacity were also taken care of while projecting the estimates. He wanted the bankers to use the document as basis while preparing their branch plan which get ultimately get consolidated as the Annual Credit Plan for the year 2012-13.

He further added that, for accelerating the growth of the rural economy through development of rural infrastructure, NABARD has so far extended financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 296.76 crore for 1,330 projects under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), in Salem district.

The projects covered were roads, bridges, schools, veterinary hospitals, drinking water supply, irrigation works, etc.

The bankers were requested to provide adequate and timely credit support for investments under agriculture, especially under thrust areas for promotion of water conservation measures, increasing coverage and productivity under horticulture crops, value addition of production surpluses through agro and food processing strategies and more impetus to the complementary sector Animal Husbandry

4 flyovers and 1 subway at the cost of 63crores is going to be built in the city

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=85881378&postcount=114

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Salem is one of the fastest growing city with a population of 8.5lakhs within the city limits.

* Floating population is increasing due to economic activity.

* Salem Junction-Vridhachalam railway line divides the city into two. This line crisscroses the city roads from Shevapet to city limits.

* When the vehicles in the city and population is increasing rapidly, the traffic gets pilled up on these city roads during the closure of the railway gate.

* This has become daily show in the city roads and vehicle gets locked in the traffic and public were put in great inconvenience. So lot of request were sent for building flyovers/subways on these roads.

* Due to the repeated request a flyover was built on Omalur main road in (1989) due to late Mr.Rengarajan Kumaramangalam and Mr.Vazhapadi ramamoorthy.

* Since 1989, the request for other flyovers like Shevapet Leigh Bazaar, Mulvadi gate, Cherry road, Town Annaimedu, Old suramangalam were put in cold storage.

* Inspite of repeated request and prolonged delay since (1989), the same request was taken to Salem M.P Semmalai in (2010), this issue was spoken in parliament citing the growth of the vehicles and congestion in the city due to these level crossing. Finally railway board has given approval for the same. Feasibility report has been prepared and same has been approved by railway ministry.

* As per the feasibility report.
Annaimedu Flyover - 17crores 72lakhs
Cherry road flyover + Bretts road subway - 21crores 70lakhs
Shevapet Leigh bazaar flyover - 17crores 42lakhs
Old Suramangalam flyover - 6crores
Total = 62crores 84lakhs

* DPR, drawing and exact cost of project preparation in under progress, once DPR is completed, this will be sent for final approval and then construction will start says a railway official

* 50% of above cost will be shared by state government.

* Salem people hope the project will start soon and also expect TN gvt to take fast action on this much needed flyovers in the city.

* Also it is better to built flyover at Ponnamapettai gate in the initial stage itself.

Planning Commission rejects JNNURM proposal on cities

NEW DELHI: The proposal to include 28 cities having a population of five lakh and above under the flagship Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has been rejected by the Planning Commission on account of resource constraints.

"It was proposed by the Ministry to include 28 cities or urban agglomerations with population of five lakh and above under the Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) of JNNURM," Minister of State for Urban Development Sugata Roy said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

However, "on account of resource constraints, the Planning Commission did not agree to include these cities under UIG of JNNURM," the Minister said.

The proposed cities included Guntur, Warangal, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Belgaum, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad, Durg-Bhilai Nagar, Kozhikode, Gwalior, Amravati, Bhiwandi, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Solapur, Cuttack, Jalandhar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Kota, Salem, Tiruppur, Tiruchirappalli, Aligarh, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur and Moradabad.

UIG is a sub-mission of JNNURM which looks at projects such as widening of roads, reducing congestion, renewal of sewerage and water pipe system, development of heritage areas, preservation of water bodies in urban areas which come under the program me.

Movie shot near Salem.....

Panneerselvam's 18 Vayasu full of animal instinct!

Panneerselvam, who shot to fame with his directorial debut, Renigunta, says his next venture will have an entirely new concept.

"18 Vayasu is all about a mentally unstable youngster, who falls in love. Be it happiness or anger, he has a unique way of expressing it. Whenever he is depressed, he takes on the behaviour of an animal that he sights first. I believe this is a concept that hasn't been explored in Tamil cinema yet," says Panneerselvam.

He adds, "We shot eight sequences of the hero exhibiting animal behaviour. While he pants and barks like a dog in one, he fights like a bull in another!" The film, which stars producer SS Chakravarthy's son Johnny (who debuted with Renigunta) and newcomer Gayathri in the lead, was shot in Chennai, Theni, Madurai and Thiruchengodu (near Salem).

"The album of the film, for which music has been composed by two Sri Lankan Tamils, Dinesh and Charles Bosco, will be launched tomorrow. The highlight of the album will be a song that has been sung by a Thirunangai. The number, which talks about the trials and tribulations of transgenders, has been picturised on them," he informs.

Puravankara eyes overseas market for expansion

Coimbatore, Nov. 21:

Real estate developer Puravankara is eyeing the overseas market for expansion. The company's maiden project in a foreign soil is coming up in Sri Lanka.

The company had invested on the land some years back, but postponed development as the situation was not congenial for promoting mega projects. “We were waiting for the right time to develop it,” a senior official of the company told Business Line.

Stating that Purvankara would make an announcement about this upcoming project before the end of the current calendar year, the official said “the site is located en route to the airport from Colombo city. It is a 25-acre plot and we have the necessary approvals in place from the respective authorities.”

The real estate development major also owns another piece of land within the city limits, but would look at developing the same at a later date he said, referring to the land holding in Colombo.

“The project would comprise of apartments and mid-segment dwelling units,” he said without disclosing more details about the company's overseas venture.

In India, Puravankara is planning to reach out to 22 cities over the next five years. The company is planning to moot projects in Tiruchi, Salem, Madurai and so on among other locations.

The company, meanwhile, has expressed its intent to hike the price of ‘Purva Bluemount' – a project under construction at Singanallur in Coimbatore, from November 21.

The project is sitting on 16.86 acre, with a planned layout of 1,116 units, comprising two and three bedroom apartments ranging from 1,352 sq feet to 1,872 sq feet. Construction is under way, work commenced around May 2011.

According to the company's Sales and Marketing Director, Mr P.C. Sukanand, 150 units have been sold out till date and the response ‘positive'.

He disagreed when pointed out that five years ago, a project of this size would have been completely sold out as soon as an announcement was made to this effect by stating ‘in housing projects, seeing is believing. It is not like selling a FMCG product. Buying a property is an investment.”

When asked to quantify the increase, Mr Sukanand said, “it is only marginal and is more due to hike in the price of steel, cement etc.”

The company has tweaked its marketing strategy by hosting a dinner for the prospective and existing Puravankara home owners. It has also offered a 2 per cent reward to any Purva Home Owner (on the basic price of the property) for referral enquiries.

This site was very impressive with up to date information on the growth about Salem
My sincere congratulations for the site administrators
The photos are also were impressive. It will be very helpful for doing shopping at Salem.
Please keep updating on the new shopping malls, restaurants, Dress shops, footwear shops, jewellery shops etc. Real life photos are important. It makes us feel that we are there.
I was not able to see any post regarding the request for basic toilet facility in Salem bustand and surrounding areas. Please correct me if I have missed out in this site.
The unsanitary condition of the toilets in Salem bus stand is really pathetic. This leaves a very bad impression on the image of Salem. Toilets were awful and stinking.
We must invite the private player like Sulabh toilet systems to build and maintain good toilets
This must be supported by government so that they can offer the service in a cheap price like One or two rupee.
We should create awareness among people and encourage people to use and maintain toilets. We should also make people to focus on hygiene. This may not be possible overnight. But we need to put consistent effort and we should be able to achieve this in long term
Salem should start this and lead as an example for other districts.
People are ready to spend for costly dress, footwear, jewellery etc. But the same guys are seen peeing on the street walls. Think about the pathetic condition of Women.
How many shopping malls have clean toilet facilities???
May be other people in this forum can post their ideas to promote Hygiene and improve the sanitary conditions in Salem.
Many tourists pass through Salem while they are travelling to Bangalore, Ooty, Yercaud. Definitely these private toilet facilities will be useful to them.
Salem has a high floating population since many people visit from surrounding places for business, shopping etc. and it is a key junction too. But there is not even a single hygienic toilet available. Any forum members can share if they have seen one.
We are talking about infrastructure, shopping malls, restaurants of international quality in this forum. Why don’t we demand the basic requirement sanitization facility of international quality???
I trust this site would help people to create awareness about Sanitation and Hygiene !!!!!:cheer:

The above link says Tirupur as the fifth largest agglomeration in tamilnadu.

How come salem was lagging behind eventhough it was declared corporation 14 years (1994) before tiruppur (2008) and lot of economic/retail activities took place in the past?

If the statistics is true and the same trend continues, then there are chances of our city losing its predominance to the newcomers instead of catching our senior competitors like Trichy.......

Do we really have a small agglomeration??? :(

There are no uniform rules followed in the categorization of UAs.

For instance, Avinashi which is nearly 20km out of Tiruppur has been added to the Tiruppur UA. But, even Ayodhiyapattinam, Steel Plant, Yercaud Foot Hills are not part of Salem UA.

Technically - Omalur, Ayodhiyapattinam, Mallur, Ariyanoor, Yercaud Foot Hills, Veeranam should be part of Salem UA. It would have made Salem UA population more than 10 lakh.

It is all due to the lack of proper vision by the Salem Corporation officials. It is their duty to take care of such basic things. But their endless sleep is causing all the troubles.

None of the governmental officers in Salem really do any work.

We have an age-old city bus routes. Old buses from other corporations get dumped into Salem roads. Stinking bus stands. Uncleared garbage bins.

Salem, once was a very clean city not too long ago. But the story has changed now.

We lack a visionary leader.

Actually my guess w.r.t Triuppur may be there is no village inbetween northern most part of tiruppur and avinashi and all villages might be census towns.

This is something I found out recently there can be many villages which can function as separate unit or grouped as a single village panchayat. In TN we have about 15,000 villages whereas most of the other states have many more villages but only KL has very less villages and there the villages work as a cluster under panchayats.

Even in TN there are many cluster work under panchayats but still we have lot of small villages.

Uniting our forum members

Time by time our forum members are sharing their frustration with inefficient/nonperforming political/government system in Salem. I think it is useless to expect Salem authorities or politicians to do their work for Salem. Our forum members should join together to start doing whatever they can. Originally a team was formed from the forum members and did few good representation. It seems like that stopped.

Our forum members should reunite again to form a strong entity and find some funding/revenue stream to support that. We need to take our representation through our entity to every segment of development work in Salem. This the only way to accomplish something for Salem will produce some results. Please share your thoughts on that.

Jagee before we meet, it is better first we discuss what are our needs. Since Jilla forum is not active, we can go making a list of needs here in SSC itself. Then we can fix a date and act upon.

1. Administrative need - Corporation/UA expansion
2. Road needs - traffic improvement, expansion, flyovers, ring road etc.,
3. Railway needs - new trains, upgrading town, market, jn
4. Industrial needs - IT park other investment
5. Airport and city bus service.

A simple PPT and MOM can be final output of the discussion. Once this is done, it would be easy to act upon meeting concerned people/authorities/politicians.:)

From Dinamani

Salem Super Specialty hospital started to function.

There were reports that Eri didn't receive water even in this monsoon.. first they should remove the encroachments and clean the water path to Eri from Yercaud and other hills surrounding Oothumalai/Jarugumalai.. otherwise 25crores will be utter waste.

Arul, this lake does not have waterway from Yercaud. It receives water only from the surrounding hills.

We are hearing this news for the past several years. Hope the project will materialize this time.

If Irai Anbu was in tourism dept, this might have become true. We have to wait and see how the new gvt and the corp is efficient in promoting this.

b/w thanks for correction, If I am correct Thirumanimuthar takes the excess water from Yercaud to Cauvery near Velur.

And Pannaimarathupati lake usually gets dried up only during DMK rule.. I heard the same story that lake was good amount of water till 1997 and then dried up from 1997 to 2002 again water level was good from 2002 to 2007.. now dried up again. I don't know whether it is rumor or something really happening.

These 4 can make city as major tourist attraction apart from Yercaud and Kolli Hills. Let us wait and see when this dream will get fullfilled.:)

TAMIL Nadu IT exports grew by about 14 per cent to close to Rs 42,000 crore in 2010-11. The numbers show a sharp recovery from the previous year’s lackluster performance of only 0.2 per cent increase over 2008-09.

The pecking order remains the same with Karnataka leading the pack followed by Maharastra and Tamil Nadu. While the former reported about Rs 85,000-crore exports for 2010-11, Maharashtra’s exports are projected to cross Rs 50,000 crore. Karnataka’s exports continue to be almost double that of Tamil Nadu. The state’s IT companies operated from close to 1,200 STPI units as against Tamil Nadu’s 1,751 units as of last fiscal. The number of active

STPI units in Tamil Nadu decreased to 1,003 during 2009-10. Close to 40 per cent of the units are those of small and medium businesses. Thirty-eight units were newly registered during this financial year, J Parthasarathy, director of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), told Financial Chronicle in a recent interview. The additions mostly happened in Chennai and were companies that specialised in telecommunications software and hardware, he added.

While exports from tier II and III cities in Tamil Nadu more than doubled to Rs 909 crore in 2009-10, encouraging growth is expected this year too, he said.
Application software contributed about 40 per cent of the total exports while the rest was earned from sectors including BPO, product development and medical transcription.

USA was expectedly the largest revenue contributor with over 40 per cent share and close on its heels was UK with over 37 per cent.

New SEZ units (special economic zones) have been commissioned in tier II and III cities including Madurai and Salem and they are expected to payoff this year, he added. The number of notified SEZs as of last year was 29, of which 19 were in Chennai, five in Coimbatore, three in Madurai and one each in Tiruchi and Salem.
About 840 hectares are under IT/ITeS SEZs with investments of about Rs 9,000 crore as of 2009-10.
About 76 units work under the 10 operational SEZs.

Burn Standard Company merges with SAIL

Decision taken at the Cabinet meeting

The Salem unit of the Calcutta-based Burn Standard Company of the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries merged with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) of the Ministry of Steel following a decision taken at the Cabinet meeting.

A sale deed in this regard was executed on Friday between the officials of SAIL and Burn Standard, thus making the latter a refractory unit a 100 per cent subsidiary of SAIL, to signal that the transfer processes of the same had been completed.

This Rs. 100-crore turnover unit making high quality refractory bricks for steel furnaces of major steel making units has been facing various problems, including the need for modernisation.

Sister units
Its two sister units in West Bengal have been taken over by the Ministry of Railways.

The workers and staff of Burn Standard celebrated the merger with SAIL by distributing sweets and bursting crackers.

Assurance committee inspects ongoing development works in Salem

Pays visit to IT Park, Super Specialty Hospital and bauxite mines of MALCO

The Tamil Nadu Assembly's Assurance Committee, headed by its Chairman N.D. Venkatachalam (Perundurai MLA), visited the various pending works in the district on Tuesday.

The team visited the bauxite mines of MALCO at Yercaud, the Super Specialty Hospital and the Information Technology Park.

Delay

Mr. Venkatachalam said the Super Specialty Hospital was inaugurated much before completion of the required works and without installing the required facilities. Committee members also asked the contractor the reason for delay in completion of the hospital even two years after its scheduled deadline. Mr. Venkatachalam urged the officials concerned to complete the pending works at the earliest.

Later the team conducted a review meeting at the Salem Collectorate, in which officials of various departments and elected representatives were present.

Mr. Venkatachalam said that they discussed on 123 works that are being carried out through various departments and on inspecting they learnt that 50 per cent of them have been completed on time. “Officials concerned have been instructed to complete the remaining 50 per cent of the works without further delay”, he added.

Salem is the fifth most important city in the State and is fast developing, he said and added that the Chief Minister has made many announcements for carrying out various developmental works and to provide a facelift to the city and district.

Salem District Collector, District Revenue Officer, Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Salem Corporation were also present during the inspections and review meeting

Central Bank looks at business growth

Central Bank of India is targeting Rs. 3,600 crore business this year in this region.

Its Regional Manager S. Palanisamy told presspersons here on Tuesday that during the eight months of this financial year the bank had registered advances of Rs. 1,600 crore and deposits of Rs. 1,400 crore in this zone. Last year the bank had registered Rs. 2,500 crore total business here. A new branch was opened this year and the bank had applied for licences to open six more branches.

Nearly one-third of lending here was to small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs). The SMEs and retail sectors were two focus areas for the bank in the zone. The bank's lending to small and medium-scale enterprises had increased, especially in places such as Hosur, Coimbatore, and Salem. Lending to SMEs so far during this fiscal was Rs. 431.34 crore. The bank's retail lending in this region was Rs. 422 crore so far this year as against Rs. 351 crore last financial year. It had lent Rs. 94 crore between April and November this year to the housing sector. Last year, during the same period, advances to the housing sector were Rs. 120 crore.

The bank had identified 14 villages in the eight districts for financial inclusion. Under the Aadhar scheme, it had 2.4 lakh enrolments during the last three months. Some of the special schemes introduced this year were: loans against gold jewellery and tie-up with insurance company to provide medical insurance in rural areas.

The bank would organise a programme here on Wednesday for its customers as part of the centenary year events.

Salem airport emerging as a pilot training centre
Special Correspondent

A Cessna in Salem Airport at the launch of International Aviation Academy Pvt. Ltd.-Photo: E. Lakshmi Narayanan With leading professional flight training academies, the Salem airport has emerged as a hub for private and commercial pilot training.

Despite the withdrawal of the lone domestic operation by Kingfisher Airlines, the Salem Airport has today become a preferred location for many private operators and leading training academies thanks to its strategic location, well-laid runway of 6,000 feet and a favourable weather condition as per visual flight rules.

On Thursday a two-seater Cessna 152, belonging to Chennai-based International Aviation Academy (IAA) Private Limited, took off with a student on a maiden training sortie thus signalling the inauguration of the second academy on the premises of the Salem Airport. The other academy is Southern Pilot Training Academy, Salem, in association with a Bhopal-based institute. “Many have expressed their willingness to pitch in here,” says an officer in airport.

IAA Chairman M.K. Raja Gopalan says the academy is run by aviation experts with a high degree of professionalism. “The main objective is to establish a highly competitive training programme as per international standards and norms of Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Chief Flying Instructor will be Capt O B K Singh who has two decades of experience and logged 5,000 hours,” says Mr. Raja Gopalan.

The academy boasts of 15,000 square feet hangar and another 15,000 square feet space for facilities such as Wi-Fi enabled classrooms, parking lots, runway of 1,800 metre length, a fleet of Cessna 152 and 172 aircraft, flight stimulator, multi-engine training crafts and workshop. “The courses include Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot licenses,” says Directors K C Samuel and Shaji Abraham John.

With the air traffic growing manifold and shortage of commercial pilots hitting the industry hard, the DGCA has decided to give licences to these training academies to make the unutilised airport infrastructure in Tier-II cities such as Salem, economically viable one. Though 28 airports have been identified by AAI, the institutions have preferred small and medium ones since they are relatively free from high density traffic.

Me too stopped buying Hindu and shifted to Times of India.

TOI-CBE is giving equal importance to all the cities in west region in publishing the news, best example: our last week event on Traffic awareness "“Unsafe Roads & Unsafe Driving in Salem City” was published in this newspaper in detail with charts.

Arul,

I don't think we need a separate thread for IT as of now. AFAIK only FAI and Capgemini Bpo are the two MNC's present in Salem. Hope many companies will look for Salem followed by FAI.

When i spoke with one higher official of First American India, he said they selected Salem after analysing 25 cities in India. He said one main reason is its very near to Bangalore. Hope once the so called IT park is completed many companies will interest in Salem .

I also don't know why no private builders are interested in constructing a IT park in Salem?

The 100-year-old Panamarathupatti Lake, which once remained a major drinking water source for Salem and Rasipuram people, will be beautified shortly to attract tourists.

The New Delhi-based DHI India is preparing an action plan for the lake, the scenic spot that figured in many Kollywood blockbusters of yesteryears. The Salem Corporation is earmarking a sum of Rs.25 crore for the massive restoration and beautification works, which include landscaping, planting of saplings, herbal farm, encroachment removal and construction of rainwater harvesting structures to ensure steady water supply.

The lake has 2,137.92 acres of water spread and commands 356.45 acres of catchment acreas. Water sources for the lake include Varattaru, Kootaru and jungle streams from the near-by Jarugumalai Hills. It has a depth of 306 m with its banks running to 1,248 m. The Corporation with great difficulties had removed the encroachments from its banks and secured the land by erecting wire fencing.

Since the Department of Forest and TWAD Board have constructed 70 check dams across water channels, the inflow into the lake has drastically come down though it has been receiving an average annual rainfall of 735 mm. Steps will be taken to ensure a steady water supply to the lake, says Mayor S.Soundappan.

The development works consist of approach roads, rest rooms, boating facility, watch towers, herbal park etc. The works will be carried out without disturbing the existing ecology in the area, says an official.

As Salem city has no major tourist spot worth to be mentioned, the Corporation's move to rejuvenate the water spread at Panamarathupatti is a welcome one, say residents.

Temporary shutdown of the commercial flight operation may not sound good news to all but it has given a chance for more flying schools to operate here.

City airport is becoming a hotspot for pilot training centres in south India. International Aviation Academy launched its centre in the city last Thursday in addition to Southern Pilot Training Academy, which started to train pilots since 2008.

When asked about the reason for choosing Salem airport, Shaji Abraham John, one of the directors of IAA, said, "Good climate condition and runway at Salem Airport is highly suitable for flight training in southern India. Besides, Salem is becoming an education hub and has good road connectivity."
