An underpass u/c at Sivathapuram

This should be a part of NH-47 four-laning, with the new alignment of NH47 starting at Kandampatti

This place has crossings for Salem - Karur & Salem - Erode sections parallelly.

Vijayan it is bit confusing!!

Can you correlate this picture with a simple sketch or google earth images!! That will give a clear picture about this Salem bye-pass NH7, new alignment for NH 47 four laning, Salem-Karur/Salem-Erode rail lines and Sivathapuram under pass!!

The Salem IT market is on the upswing with a majority of the IT business being generated by the educational community and Small Office Home Office (SOHO) segment, which are acting as the catalysts. Also, small and medium businesses and the government sector are contributing to the growth graph.

The demand for laptops is slightly more than for branded desktop PCs. The brands in demand are HCL, Compaq and Lenovo owing to prices, product compatibility and warranty scheme provided at the time of purchase.

Commenting on the recent market scenario, M. Abu Salih of Taj Info Derive said, "Laptops are driving the IT market owing to increasing demand from all segments." He further added that there has been an increase in demand for branded PCs in recent times, which are coming mostly from the educational community.

One fact that came forth while talking to the channel partners was that the channels here are not satisfied with the kind of training offered by vendors. The vendors have to increase their foci on this parameter for the betterment of the community and business.

When asked about the budget expectation, Seinmuha Anand, proprietor of Apex Soft Park, said, "I am mostly dealing with multimedia products and I hope products like combo drives, flash drives and pen drives would be completely exempted from excise duty."

"Zero duty implementation on all IT products will help in bringing down the prices and push the demand of IT products still higher," he added.

The recently held DI Yatra in the city saw presentations from Microsoft Hardware, Brothers International and Zenith Computers. Forty attendees from 35 companies were present at the event.

Gujarat-based Sintex Industries Ltd plans to pump in about Rs 1,800 crore over the next three years for expansion of its various units.

“We have already raised $300 million through private placement and QIBs. We intend to raise another $300 million by way of foreign currency convertible bonds,” said Amit Patel, MD of Sintex Industries.

The company which acquired Zeppelin Mobile System India in 2005 has also chalked out plans to set up two greenfield projects in Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh for manufacturing telecom shelters, which are installed at the base of telecom towers.

It will invest Rs 75 crore in the two projects, Patel said. The company is looking at a revenue generation of Rs 200 crore from the telecom sector alone. It is planning to expand in eight locations where it has its manufacturing units including Kalol, Nalgadh, Kolkata and Salem.

The 5 roads junction site(Opposite to Chenneys ) is a good candidate for big malls. Thanks to ARRS for their plan to construct a MEGA MALL.

As said , 5 roads junction (after over bridge constructions and with upcoming projects like Reliance and ARRS ) it will be the center of attraction.

Arul,

I don't think its the vacant space exactly opp. to Cenneys which we were discussing on that day. This project should be coming up a little adjacent to that space. If I am correct this will be coming in the space opposite to the centre of Cenneys and IMA Hall. I could see a large old building being demolished in that area on last sunday. The property had a huge vacant space in front of the building which was demolished.

The space which we were discussing is not that much spacious to accomodate this much big project.

Anirudh can share more information on this.

I strongly believe this may be the 14-storeyed building for which the Corporation granted approval (Recalling the meeting with the corporation commisioner, along with our friend Tarung). Not sure if they will construct all 14-storeys at one stretch. They would have got approval considering future expansion. Lets wait and see.

Raj, it was Koovam river of Salem! Its name is Thirumanimutharu. Once it was good river but few decades before it has become sewage!!

Minister Arumugam took some intiatives to make it clean, they bought a project called "Thirumanimuthar River Project" Under that they will make concrete surface for the banks and the bed, then roads will be constructed in both the sides of the bank..... This will be made for 4KM where the river runs in the heart of city called as Fort town!!

They implemented this project in 1997 and finished the Ist phase of 1KM by 2001 and from 2001 to 2006 asusual this project also gone to dust bins, then after 2006 again they have started the project!

Good to see the recent developments in the city in all aspects.

ARRS, AVR & Shevaroys Group are doing a great job (rather, great business) in improving the living standards of the Salemites. The Kandaswarna group also deserves an appreciation for bringing in the Mall Culture to the city way back. Salem has been seeing a tremendous growth in all aspects over the past few years.

1. Industrial (JSW SISCOL expansion, Salem Steel Plant Expansion, Sintex plant, SAIL Steel SEZ)
2. Real Estate (Kandaswarna Malls; Apartment projects by ARRS, AVR, and other local players; ARRS Mega Mall, Vijay Shanthi Builders' Faber Villa etc)
3. Health Care (Manipal Hospitals, Vinayaka Missions Hospital expansion, Government Super-speciality Hospitals)
4. Infrastructure (City Roads being widened, Lighting arrangements throughout the by-pass road stretch, Central BS Renovation, Thirumanimuthar project etc)
5. Roads (Salem-Omalur stretch already 4-laned; Works in full swing on Salem - Chengapalli, Salem - Namakkal stretches; Preliminery works in Salem - Ulundurpet stretch)
6. Night-landing facility provided in the Airport, Airport expansion by 1000 acres to make it a cargo terminal.
7. Salem Railway division is expected to bring new train services to Salem.
8. Salem - Karur stretch is coming up quickly.
9. Hotels (4 Star Hotels promoted by Selvam & Shevaroys Group; The Sky Roca in Yercaud)

No, The SAIL SALEM SEZ land is notified between third gate and Steel plant police station, not exactly on the steel plant road. The connecting road will be developed by the SEZ promoters.

The land between medical college and steel plant gate no 1, is for township expansion, and also for a proposed cooperative colony for SAIL employees,

Its really nice to see that Salem is getting many projects promoted by local players. Unlike other tier-II cities which wait for long time for ADLABS, Fun Republic etc to come to their places and establish Multiplexes and MALL's, Salem is pioneering the culture thanks to local giants.

And the Salem-Egmore train is a gift to Salemites and the city itself, which has been witnessing a tremendous economical growth in the recent past.

happy to see the mall project...

but i heard that the present multiplex has been sold to pyramid grps(they are flashing this news in the screens of multiplex itself)..

did they sell it to make a good business(for the present proposed mall) or is that multiplex a loss making one?

Doccbe,

Pyramid group has acquired many theatres across the state. ARRS is one among them.

I have been there to this Multiplex several times and it is certainly NOT a loss making one. You can even find many leading theatres of Madurai, Chennai coming under Pyramid.

It starts from Salem which is Chennai-CBE-Cochin main railline and ends up at Karur.

This line will provide a shortest route from Bangalore, Hosur, Salem to Madurai, Trichy and further south of Madurai.

We expect Madurai/Trichy-Bangalore day trains and few train via Erode to be routed via this new line. You can see the existing circuteous route from Salem to Karur via Erode in the map.

The Agriculture department will implement precision farming in the district in the coming fiscal, Joint Director of Agriculture K. Janagan has said. Disclosing this at the farmers grievances redressal day meeting held here on Friday, he said that a total of 1000 hectares in the district would be covered initially under the precision farming.

The scheme would be implemented as a part of the National Agriculture Development Programme, he added.

Advanced technologies would be used for pest management, water management and nutrition management under the scheme to maximise the agricultural productivity. Support would be extended to the farmers for marketing their produce. Cluster approach would be adopted while implementing the precision farming, Mr.Janagan said. Farmers, speaking in the meeting, said that the implementation of Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management project in Ethapur and its surrounding areas had benefited a large number of people.

Earlier, officials explained about the live stock insurance programme. The district administration has planned to cover about 25,000 animals under the programme in the current financial year.

Salem-Chengapalli NH47 4-laning at snail's pace

Article #1, in http://www.dinamalar.com/2008MAR05/district/salem.asp states that the works in the four laning of NH47 stretch from Salem to Chengapalli is progressing at a snail's pace and hence it does not look to get completed as scheduled on January 2009.

Extracts from the article:

* The cities of Salem, Erode, Tirupur & Coimbatore which are growing at a rapid speed were decided to be linked by a four-lane highway by the NHAI and the prime minister laid foundation stone for the project in July, 2006.
* The project is executed as two phases viz. Salem - Komarapalayam & Kmarapalayam - Chengapalli by IVRCL under the supervision of NHAI-CBE.
* Bye-pass roads are coming up at Sankari, Chithode, Nasiyanur, Perundurai.
* A massive bridge is being constructed across the river Cauvery at Bhavani
* (As discussed/anticipated many times in the forum) The NH47 will deviate from its present allignment at Uthamacholapuram, and join the by-pass road between Kondalampatti & Kandampatti
* Given the fact that only 9 months are left before the scheduled completion of the project, only about 35% of the works have completed so far.
* In the stretch connecting Uthamacholapauram and Kandampatti, only the pillars have been constructed so far, for a 1.5km length fly-over. Road works in the remaining stretch of this link road are still in preliminery stages.
* The fly-over construction at Seeragapadi has been completed only less than 40%.
* Road laying has been completed in only one side (2-lanes) in the stratch between Salem and Magudanchavadi.
* No works have started so far in the other side of the road.
* The traffic on the stretch between Salem and Coimbatore has increased by manifold - and the incomplete road works have resulted in many fatal accidents.

NHAI has to push this project getting its shape soon.

Superspecilaity news in the The Hindu....

SALEM: The construction of buildings for the Rs. 120-crore super speciality hospital is progressing steadily, Senior Architect from Union Ministry of Health Chandrasekar has said.

There is no delay in the processes. The work is progressing well and it will be completed within March 2009, he told reporters here on Friday after inspecting the construction site. Union Minister of Health Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, state ministers, the Collector and officials of Salem Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College Hospital and various other departments were extending their full co-operation for carrying out the work, he pointed out.

The demolition of a few old buildings located on the construction site could be carried out at a later point of time.

Those buildings would not hamper the progress of the work, he said.

Later he conducted a meeting with the officials of the project consultant firm, the company which had taken up the construction work and senior officials of the medical college hospital about the work progress.

I think, Metro projects for smaller cities will not materialize unless it is proved to have the financial viability. In reality perspective, the metro rail may not happen for all tier-II in the foreseeable future. However, it is a possiblity to have the passenger trains connecting differnt cities like Trichy, Madurai, Erode, Salem, Coimbatore etc, might server the part of the purpose in the near future. Or the semi-express trains may be forced to have few more stops in these cities.

‘It is feasible to implement metro rail system in Salem’

Staff Reporter

SALEM: The Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association has suggested the Railway Ministry to introduce a metro rail system for Salem city. Association president M. Shanmugam, while presenting a report in this regard at the seminar on strengthening the Salem Railway Division held here on Friday, claimed that it is feasible to implement metro rail system in the city, which will meet public transport requirement for another 100 years.

The proposed Information Technology Park and various parts in the city could be covered under the system, he added.

Places

The association members also suggested operation new trains from Salem to the following places: Puducherry (via Viluppuram), Tiruchy (via Viridhachalam, Hosur (via Dharmapuri), Kancheepuram (via Arakkonam),Dindigul (via Karur) and Thanjavur (via Karur and Tiruchy).New services could also be started from Dharmapuri to Chennai, Tuticorin (via Karur), Thiruvananthapuram (via Coimbatore), and Mangalore (via Coimbatore). A large number of passengers would benefit, if a train is operated from Bangalore to Puducherry (via Dharmapuri, Salem and Attur).

Members had also asked the ministry to lay new lines and increase the jurisdiction of the Salem division to1,715 km.

In a scenario of rising demand and intense competition between Full Service Carriers and Low Cost Carriers in India, regional airlines are emerging to take the lead discovers

Since 2003, passenger traffic has grown at almost 25 per cent, annually. This growth is not restricted only to metros. According to Airports Authority of India (AAI) estimates, traffic in tier-II and tier-III cities (such as Ahmedabad, Pune, Goa, Amritsar, Coimbatore and Vishakhapatnam) is expected to grow by at least 20 per cent, per year, until 2012. “As the impact of the Indian growth engine reaches smaller towns, the travel demand in such cities will increase. Further, increasing congestion and real estate costs in the metros will make non-metro cities attractive destinations for business. About 18 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are coming up in India, mostly in tier II and tier III cities,” says Olivier Kobisch, DC/EM – Market Analysis Manager, ATR.

Waiting for approval:
Some regional airlines that are waiting to begin operations include Air Dravida, Trans India Aviation Pvt. Ltd, Emric Aviation Pvt. Ltd. and King Air.

Regional skies getting busier
According to Praful Patel, Civil Aviation Minister, regional air connectivity is still very low. Patel comments, “Regional aviation is the future. There is plenty of opportunity in connecting tier II and tier III cities with smaller airlines. ATF is cheaper and landing and navigation charges for 80-seater and smaller planes are waived.” Tax on jet fuel for smaller planes (which the regional carriers will use), is set at a low four per cent, compared to 30-40 per cent that FSCs pay.

M Thiagarajan, Managing Director, Paramount Airways says, “Regional airlines can work well as feeder airlines. These in the South link a number of less connected places; for example, Hubli, Belgaum, Bellary, Salem, Tirupati and Pondicherry. Any airline, which has a 20-50 seater aircraft can carry passengers and feed them to larger airlines in metropolitan cities.” On the infrastructure front, the government is developing 33 non-metro airports. “There is definitely huge potential in the regional business, but DGCA should also provide financial concessions for airlines. ‘Watchhour’ charges should be waived, as well,” concludes Dhar.

It will be good if we have one more PFs in Market and Town stations. Railways should put pitlines at Salem market for maintenance of trains, once Salem-Karur line is opened for traffic, train operation will increase further!!

It is the time for TNSTC to start operating more buses via Salem Market and Salem Town station and it should be connected to various parts of the city.

Now more trains are going to run in Salem-Vridhchalam section!! what the corporation is going to do with Leigh Bazaar, Mulvadi Gate, Cherry Road level crossings?!?!

Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd’s (Elcot) plans to set up IT parks in tier II cities of the state are gaining momentum.

According to Elcot sources, the commerce ministry has notified 49.89 hectares at Navalpattu on the outskirts of Trichy as a special economic zone (SEZ) for IT and IT-enabled services.

Besides, Elcot has sought an additional 120 acres in the same vicinity for which the district administration is already on the job.

Meanwhile, the IT park at Gagaikondan near Tirunelveli is taking shape. Located around 12 km from Tirunelveli, the total area of the SEZ is about 500 acres.

Elcot had fixed the land cost at Rs 15 lakh per acre on lease and Sutherland Global Services has already registered. Water supply and electric sub-stations in the park are already in place, the sources said.

Elcot authorities are hopeful of locating units of major IT industries at Tirunelveli, Trichy and Salem. Companies like HCL, Sutherland and CTS have evinced interest in the Trichy park.

Other companies like IBM, Infosys, TCS, and Bosch, too have initiated discussions.

Good to see few companies in Trichy zone.

Guys, Any news on the Salem's list ?

TNT India plans 5 mega hubs

New Delhi, March 13 TNT India, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Netherlands based TNT NV, plans to set up five mega hubs in the country over the next few years. The hubs would be located at Nagpur, Delhi, Kolkata and one location each in the South and West (around Mumbai).

“We are yet to zero in on exact locations. In South, we are looking at Bangalore or Salem. In Maharashtra, we are considering places near Mumbai, like Nasik, for instance,” Mr Abhik Mitra, Managing Director, TNT India Pvt Ltd, told Business line.

He declined to share the investment details for these facilities. However, each such hub could require investments in the region of €2 million, according to industry estimates.

TNT, which acquired Speedage in September 2006, one of the Indian road express companies, spent last one year in incorporating processes followed by TNT internationally in Speedage.

“We connected about 168 Speedage locations on Globalink, the software adopted by TNT internationally to track its consignments,” Mr Mitra said. The company spent around €2.5-3 million on IT last year.

Growing demand

This year, Speedage services would be branded as TNT. The sectors that are bringing in significant growth in demand in the express, courier and parcel industry are pharmaceuticals/life sciences, mobile phone market, retail, auto components and spare parts, while banking and financial services has maintained a steady growth.

The company claims to have a market share of 28 per cent in express cargo market, up from six per cent share in 1996.

As a part of its vertical focused strategy, TNT offers specialised services such as TNT Scholar Pack for students, TNT Medpack for life sciences segment and TNT Exhibition services for Indian exporters participating in overseas exhibitions.

Anirudh,

The bye-pass road does not link the city as such with the Airport/Periyar Univ etc. The encroachment drive happened between Kuranguchavadi Junction and Seelanaickenpatti. It was mainly targetted on the shops which were established right on the Service lane.

Any vehicle from the city (like New BS, Fairlands, Old BS etc) will directly go on the Omalur Road from Five Roads Junction. But off late, we have been seeing few vehicles using the bye-pass road to do away with the congestion. But still It is only the arterial Omalur Road that connects the city with NH7 at Kurangu Chavadi.

But days are not far away for the By-pass Road stretch to become a much busier stretch, with many commercial activities on the road. The bye-pass road stretch between Kurangu Chavadi and the ROB (near Thiruvagoundanoor) has a mixture of commercial and residential establishments, an the stretch almost has no vacant space. The stretch between Thiruvagoundanoor and Kondalampatti is purely a logistics hub, with the facilities of almost all leading logistics solutions providers of the country.

TN BUDGET SPEECH
With a view to upgrading the urban roads in the State to international standards, a massive scheme called Tamil Nadu Urban Roads Development Project will be implemented from the coming financial year. Under this scheme, in addition to improving all roads in our Municipal Corporations and Municipalities, they will be provided with pavements, storm water drainage and provision for laying pipes under them. In its first phase, this scheme will cover the roads in Chennai City; Trichy, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur and Madurai Municipal Corporations, and Alandur, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Inam Karur, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Valasaravakkam Municipalities, where the underground sewerage schemes have already been completed.

Salem was not figuring in the list of cities and towns planeed for this project as per the budget speech. However if we read the full para , it looks they have considered those cities and towns where the Underground sewerage is completed in the first phase.
Since Salem Underground sewerage is under tendering stage, hope the sucessive phases will include Salem under the scheme.
However the city roads are widened and plans are on to do Underground Power cabling along with implementation of underground sewerage scheme.

The user agency had identified an area of 1,928.440 ha in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Tirunelveli districts from which compensatory afforestation land of 1,276 ha could be taken away by the Forest Department.

The TIMCO submitted a proposal in which the company agreed to pay the amount for net present value to be fixed by the Forest Department, to give compensatory afforestation land as required by the Forest department, to pay the amount fixed for the exploitation of trees likely to be felled and the lease rent amount to be fixed by the department. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Tamil Nadu, stated in the proposal that the net present value to be collected from the TIMCO had been arrived at Rs 44.59 crore, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Environment and Forest Department dated 13.09.2006. The annual lease rent had been worked out at Rs 84.57 lakh. A total of 90,537 trees had to be felled in view of the iron ore mining project for which the TIMCO had to take permission from the Supreme Cour.

Sometimes too much of industrialisation will have negative growth like this now..I strongly hate this proposal..We should save trees and forest!!

Hi,

There is a old MG Track adjecent and parallel to the NH7 Road to IT park
which near the Karupur Engineering College.

This Old Mg track was used for Salem bangalore trains. Now it is not used.

You can see this trace aligment in the following site. This track joins the railway track goin to salem junction.

I have pasted links page by page you will find a rectangle yellow box marked
as Old rtack.

(Note near the proposed IT park you need to closely see the rail track aligment it is not very clear in the picture it will be parallel to the road.
This site is from google earth you can navigate all the places in salem.
Try to go along the railway trace and find the stations around).
Wait for some 10 seconds for all teh yellow boxes to appear

http://wikimapia.org/#lat=11.698414&lon=78.10715&z=17&l=0&m=a&v=2

We can also have a railway station in east salem. An old railway station
which was used long ago space is still there see the following link.
This is near the military road.

http://wikimapia.org/#lat=11.662854&lon=78.176115&z=18&l=0&m=a&v=2

It seems to be possible to have metro stations at omaloor, near airport or karupur, salem railway junction, salem market railway station , town railway station and
salem east railway station not sure if there is a railway station near udaiyapati. This reduce the time to travel from one corner to th other.

Also in future the karur line might bring more stations on the other side of salem which can be included for the metro rail service.

If anybody known about the new rail links and stations around
can add the stations which can be covered by the new rail route for karur
would be great.

This can be implemented without any major investment as there are already
stations and tracks laid.

I feel with a small investment of rail track only for 5 or 10 km (Over the head tracks on the road side to yearcard foot hills from town railway station can be consider in 2012 butget) can make a big difference to salem we can almost have connectivity to most of the places in salem.

Please add more thought on this. Your innovative thoughts and dreams will really help salem to grow faster. Development of the city is only depends on the tought process of the people and what the people demand to the goverment.

The metro train project should get started in salem because it will reduce traffic and save time for people and reduce the cost of fuel expense for a
comman man.

Thanks,
Ram

The rectangle yellow boxes does not come automatically when opening the link you need to zoom in or move around so that all the yellow boxes pop up

Infrastucture is more improtant for the city to grow. As already salem is facing traffic problems
things need to be planned keeping 10 to 15 years in mind.

We should get more people visting this site. Spread the news about this group to the younger generation colleges and school . who knows this site might form a new party in future and contents for elecetions. Probably sending an email to all your friends should help get this spread faster.

Somebody can write a good template with the link for this site
and good thinks about this site (Just want to see a person more creative and
do the Job better than me in creating the template) . It would be easier for people to
copy paste and send an email to thier friends. So people will not
hesitate to spend 10 seconds to copy paste the template and send
a email to thier friends.

There are many more important and feasible projects which the TN govt can focus to improve the tier II cities.

Madras Cements, the Rs 1,500 crore flagship company of the Ramco group, will spend Rs 1,524 crore by the end of this year to boost capacity.

It will expand cement capacity to 10 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) by the second quarter of Financial year '09, from 8 MTPA now. It is also raising grinding capacity by 1 MTPA each at the Kolaghat (West Bengal), Chennai and Salem facilities.

In addition, the Chennai based company will step up wind power capacity from 64 MW to 120 MW by the end of financial year '08. It targets to generate 123 million units per annum from this low-cost source of power.

I believe there will be a metro train service in salem by the time the IT park is ready.

Hope we get more news on this topic in the coming months.

Chennai: Ajinomoto is planning to open its manufacturing facility in India. “Once the consumption level comes to 25,000 tonnes a year, we will be setting up a plant, quite likely in Tamil Nadu, perhaps in two years,” said Mr T. Manoharan, Managing Director of Ajinomoto India Pvt Ltd.

“The main raw materials for our product MSG (monosodium glutamate) are tapioca and sugarcane, which are available in plenty, in the state,” he added, speaking to Business Line. “For instance, nearly 90 per cent of the country’s tapioca cultivation happens in Tamil Nadu, more specifically, in and around Salem.”

SOURCE: http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/006200803261862.htm

Since raw materials are mostly cultivated in and around Salem and Salem is well connected with other cities, Salem would be a feasible location for setting up their plant.

We will hope for the best.

Development Works @ Salem Junction

http://www.dailythanthi.com/thanthiepaper/showxml.aspx?id=6030386&code=3777

Extracts:

* There has been consistent demand from the public to operate new trains out of Salem Junction
* People want more destinations in addition to the Salem - Chennai Egmore Express which was announced in the budget.

On an interview to the press, the railway officials provided the below information:
* There are no sufficient number of platforms in the Junction to operate new trains from Salem.
* As Salem has become a divisional head quarters, there are many development activities progressing
* Works are in progress to provide two more platforms at the Junction (One is the GC of PF4, but I have not seen any work to construct another platform)
* The officials are ready to operate the new Salem - Chennai Egmore Express using the rakes of Yelagiri Express (which does not have SL class, and hence is it a day express?) which idles at Tirupattur.
* Works are in progress to install ATM's of 5 banks. This will include 3 Nationalized banks, ICICI and HDFC.

Salem Corporation has launched many initiatives for full-scale implementation of e-governance projects to realise its goal of “paperless” administration.

The Corporation has already begun computerised tax collection and online registration of births and deaths.
Website

It has also launched a new website www.salemcorporation.gov.in (http://www.salemcorporation.gov.in) with more facilities and user-friendly menus.

The website facilitates online registration of grievances, downloading of tender documents and various applications and self-assessment of property tax, besides providing information about various schemes and activities of the civic body.

Hospitals can register births and deaths online through the website.

Salem residents will soon be able to pay their property tax, professional tax, water charges and various other fees through online using credit cards. This feature will be incorporated in the website shortly, officials say.

Well.. I really don't understand the ignorant of TN CM. The Mettur - Attur Drinking Water Scheme is running through the heart of the Salem City which is now the major source of drinking water for the city.

The new request was to implement a dedicated drinking water scheme for the city, instead of tapping from the Attur scheme.

Both the statements are on different issues.
The corporation commissioner has told about the new Salem city drinking water scheme from Mettur which is being pursued as a project for the city.

The T.N chief minister statement is about the issue raised by PMK earlier to device ways and means to divert excess water from Mettur Dam towards other parts of Salem District instead of opening the dam and wasting the water towards sea. This was clarified that diverting the Cauvery excess water on gravitational means towards the other part of the district is not feasible.

However the corporation drinking water project is on and the commissioner is right that it will be completed as per schedule.

I think the enterprise is also a reliance offshoot, since their registered office is at Gujarat.

Highlights

It has earned a sum of Rs. 130.80 crore, its Divisional Railway Officer S.Mohan has said. The passenger earnings have gone up by 14 percent, while the goods earnings 39 percent.

Over 6.30 lakh tonnes of goods have been sent through the division, which has operations in 13 districts, he told the reporters here on Tuesday.

Nice to these figures. With opening of Salem-Vridhachalam BG line, Salem railway division is getting more freight revenues. But so far i never seen coal freight trains in Salem Town or Salem Market RS. TN govt shared the cost of Salem-Vridhachalam BG project, but they have not started to utlize it.

Omalur-Mettur dam doubling and electrification is in 2008-09 railway budget proposal. In comings years it will be more, as Salem steel plant, industries in Mettur are in expansion and export oriented textile business in Tiruppur, Erode.

Regarding passenger earnings, recently Salem division got Coimbatore-Nagercoil daily train and it was a mega sucess one. Salem-Vridhachalam passenger service also has to be mentioned here. Totally 6 new service were operated in Salem division area since Nov 2007.

In coming years further it will increase as there are going to be more service for Salem division limits.

The Division generated a revenue of Rs 135 crore over five months, a good 20 per cent up over the corresponding period of the last fiscal, the Salem Railway Divisional Manager, Mr S. Mohan, told media persons here on Friday.

Overhead power cables to be laid underground in Salem

SALEM: The Salem Electricity Distribution Circle of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has begun the preliminary works to lay the overhead power cables on Sarada College Road here underground. Officials said that power transmission lines would be placed underground to a length of 1.2 km initially.

“We have received the cables already and the excavation work will begin in two weeks,” they added.

Expensive

Though the work was expensive, it would ensure maximum safety to residents.

The officials said that the State Government allotted Rs. 54 crore in 2007-08 and 2008-09 to implement the underground power cable programme.
Circle Superintending Engineer R. Gopalakrishnan said that the Board had already installed the power lines underground from the Salem Railway Junction to Sooramangalam Uzhavar Santhai last year.
The Board had planned to remove all the overhead power lines in the city and lay them underground in a phased manner.

Work progressing for the Salem-Karur railway line project at Kandampatti in Salem.

Salem-Karur railway line project is on the track to progress.

Though land acquisition process delayed the project, work on the line is in full swing.

The project, sanctioned in 1996-97, includes laying a new broadgauge line for a length of 85 km between Salem and Karur via Namakkal.

It ran into trouble when a few land owners moved court demanding more compensation. The legal disputes have been settled after prolonged negotiations and litigations. Railway officials said the new line would reduce the distance between Salem and Karur by 44 km.

‘Underground power cable project will be over by 2009’

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will expedite the on-going underground power cable project in Salem city and complete it by December 2009, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy has said.

The State Government had earmarked over Rs. 200 crore to remove the overhead power cables in the city, and lay them underground.

Earlier, it was planned to implement the project in a phased manner and complete it by 2011-2012.

The board, however, would initiate efforts to finish the project by the end of 2009, the Minister said following a request made by Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam at a function in which a sub-station was inaugurated here on Friday.

The board had already allotted Rs. 54 crore to implement the first phase of the works under the project this fiscal.

Though it was facing problems in procuring underground cables, necessary efforts would be made to complete the project quickly, Mr. Veerasamy said.

The Minister instructed the electricity officials to sort out the problems in the land acquisition process, which was hampering the establishment of a new sub-station in Puthiragoundampalayam in Ethapur.

Mr. Veerasamy said that the land owner was urging the board to buy six acres of land, while the board required just 4.5 acres.

However, the TNEB would buy all the six acres of land within 10 days.

Mr. Veerasmay also directed the officials to install solar power facilities in 15 days to supply power to three hilly villages in Yercaud.

SALEM: Work on the second phase of Tirumanimutharu River project is progressing according to schedule. Salem Corporation has completed over 20 per cent of the project, which commenced in October last year.
Second phase

The second phase will take up lining of the bed and the bunds of Tirumanimutharu, a major river-turned-sewer that traverses through the heart of the city, 590 metre upstream starting from Anaimed and 2,210 metre downstream from Apsara Theatre. The civic body has divided the project into nine packages and started most of the works listed under all of them. Works to reconstruct three major bridges across Tirumanimutharu River have begun recently.

The lining of the bed and the bunds of Vellakuttai Odai, a major drainage channel that joins the river near the old bus stand, has also begun.

The entire course of the channel will be cemented to ensure smooth flow of waste water. Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman said the civic administration had asked the company, which bagged the contract, to increase manpower to speed up the works.
Schedule

“We are very positive that the project will be completed by December this year as per the schedule,” Mr. Jayaraman said.

The second phase of the project will cost Rs. 31.50 crore.

In the first phase, the civic body lined the river course and the bunds to a length of 1,500 metres between Ananda Bridge and Apsara Theatre a few years ago.

^^

The showroom of Khazana has occupied the newly opened building between Hotel Selvam and Juha Regency.

Gold showroom in the city is increasing rapidly....

1. AVR Swarnamahal
2. ANS Swarnapuri
3. Joy Alukkas
4. Khazana Jewellers

4 major gold outlets has occupied Central bus stand and Swarnapuri areas in past 4-5 years. This is reducing the congestion in shopping streets of fort town. Presently Swarnapuri is turning has gold spot, Fairlands for shopping and 5 roads, Meyanoor for Theatres...

The Fort town which has the congested shopping buildings for clothes, jewellers and theatres getting some relief from crowd because of this rapid expansion in city arterial roads like Omalur road, Saradha college road and 5 roads Junction.

It is better of corporation makes strict rule on building approval. All the complexs/buildings should have parking facility in Omalur road, Sarada college road etc., So that we can avoid road side parking in future.
