Let me start this new topic with some good news on the IT field in Madurai,

http://www.dinamalar.com/2007aug28/district/madurai.asp

As per the report in the above Dinamalar link, Wipro, Satyam and HCL's establishment at Madurai IT Park near MKU has been confirmed. They have applied for Electric connections also.

------------------------------------------------
Let us hope that it's a good start for many other good news on the IT field in Madurai.

^^ Great news and hope ELCOT makes these new developments public. The report goes on to say that many medium and small IT companies have also booked for space in both the IT and TIDEL parks. I hope the government creates necessary infrastructure near MKU so that Wipro, Sathyam and HCL can start operations ASAP.

Here is the link to the news,

As part of the Madurai-Dindigul railway line doubling, construction of bridge across vaigai river is progressing well.

It looks like a very good progress. I heard it from mduvignesh about the same few days ago too. Also, it looks like the old MG line has been dismantled in the entire Madurai-Dindigul stretch and new BG sleepers have been put in place, ready for laying the BG line. But, no major work seems to have happened on that.

mduvignesh, can you explain further? Can you share any photos or videos, if you have ?

^^ Ya its good that the Ellis nagar bridge has two arms on the Periyar bus stand side. This will help in reducing the chaos we see outside at the Exit of the bus stand.

I would be very much disappointed if this project takes another year to complete. I hope they complete it before March 2008.

String to setup MPO center in Madurai

Chennai, Aug. 29: String Real Estate Information Service, a mortgage process outsourcing company, is planning to double its headcount to 1,100 by December 2007.

The Chennai-based company is also setting up centres at Trichy and Madurai. Both these centres will be operational by March 2007 and will accommodate 200 people each. The $6 million company would be spending over 4 million for the expansion projects.

"Being uniquely and exclusively focused on outsourcing solutions for the mortgage industry, Strings sees an opportunity in the current crisis,’’ said String’s CEO and founder Prashant Kothari adding that the total value of all back-office and transaction-processing activities annually is $100 billion of which $10 billion is add-ressable offshore market.

The trust website says it is a college established in 17 acres.. It is in Velammal Nagar where they already have a Matriculation school and the construction of huge hospital is going on..
Few days back, on an article on how engineering college seats got filled this year, it said that Velammal college in Madurai was the only new college to have the seats filled quickly (about 85-90%)..

Hi All,
The MDU - DG doubling work is progressing good . All MG rails were removed from Dindugal to Madurai. Small bridge (ground works)works are progressing on, all the way between madurai and dindugal.RCC boxes were kept in place below the track.
Regarding Vaigai bridge - work is progressing good. i have taken some photos and videos, will upload later.
Also i have noted Madurai - dindugal NH work is also progressing well, roads are laid in many parts. Many small bridge construction works are going on.

BG is exactly going to be laid over the MG line? or BG is going to adjacent to existing BG line?
Previously, the MG line was not always going adjacent to the BG line, some places BG line moves away from the MG line.

Now what is the design proposal? The new BG is going to exactyly replace the existing MG line or it is designed to be laid parallel to existing BG line?

New BG will be replaced with the existing MG line because
1. All MG rails are removed and concrete sleepers were kept near the MG line.
2. RCC concrete boxes were kept near the MG line and in some places those RCC boxes were kept in place below the track.
3. There are small hills located in the existing BG line, so if at all they lay new BG parallel to existing BG then hill should be carved out.
4. In some places, BG line is very much elevated than ground.

As per point 3 and 4 if they lay parallel with existing BG - land aqiuisation should be done which will costs more.

Initially, only MG was there bw madurai and dindugal. When they started first BG line, they thought that existing MG line is having some problems, like narrow turning, etc. So they planned for new route without narrow turning.

They same reason will applicable for the new BG also.Because BG should not have narrow turning, curvy turning etc.

Also some 20-25 workers are on the work of runway strengthening & expansion.......But no signs of integration of new terminal building....

At what stage is the progress of runway expansion ?. Will they complete it by the end of Sept ?. Where those JCB's and Poclains working on the current runway expansion side or the opposite side near the Chirac hospital side. From your post its clear that the future runway expansion will be on the opposite side. Good to hear that they have acquired land for further expansion of the runway.

One of the main objectives of the Tamil Nadu government, is to make Tamil Nadu State into another Singapore style living standard as a whole, and not focusing on individual city alone.

Hence, by this way, ensure a more balance Tamil Nadu State's economy, peace, stability, cohesive and prosperity state, towards the goal of achieving numero uno state of India throughout.

And at the same time, uplifting the living standard of Tamil Nadu people into a more civilized civic society.

The Article about madurai in The Economics TImes

A state government sponsored IT park is also in the vicinity, and a couple of other IT park developers are looking at this location. Moreover, the proposed four way road connecting the state capital Chennai to the southern tip Kanyakumari is set to pass through this area. It also houses a modern bus station. As a result, prices in the area have risen eight fold to Rs 1 crore an acre in the last four years

The southern side of the city, which houses the Madurai Kamaraj University, is witnessing frenzied activity as the state government is to set up an IT park there. Large swings in real estate prices have taken place in the area as it is very underdeveloped currently.

The broader reason behind the price movements is the expectation that more investments would flow into the city, driven by its low cost and relatively low real estate costs. Madurai houses a large number of arts, science and engineering colleges. The region, including other southern states, produce 15,000 engineering graduates annually, with over 6,000 of them going to Bangalore and Chennai for employment.

The city centre, with many areas around the Meenakshi temple, which are a few centuries old, continues to be the nerve centre for economic activity especially for small business. Real estate rentals in the inner city limits hover around Rs 50 per sq ft.

On the residential side, good quality constructions range from Rs 1,000 a sq ft to Rs 2,000 a sq ft in up market areas, while residential rentals vary greatly based on location. Sahara City Homes is setting up a huge project in the suburbs. Local players such as Visvas Promoters and Sashwath Constructions have a good number of residential projects under development.

Organised retail is just beginning to get a toe hold in the city and the real estate valuations are largely built on the hope of IT majors setting shop in the city in the next few years.

Madurai Corporation & Tamilnadu tourism dept., jointly planned for the ROPE CAR & MOUNT-TRAIN FACILITIES in Thiruparankundram and ROPE CAR FACILITY alone in ALAGARKOIL.They had planned the first one at the cost of Rs.87 lakhs & laterone at the cost of Rs.81 lakhs/-----------.They sent it for the central govt.,'s approval under JNNURM Projects.Waiting for the approval to come !!

When one official said , Central govt., is more concerning about the tourism development activities , now. It had done a survey and found the tourists coming to TAMILNADU has doubled when compared to the last years.......He also said that The main reason for such growth in visitors is only due to MADURAI & RAMESWARAM.He said that Many of the people from AMERICA , AUSTRALIA , SRILANKA, NEWZEALAND & many of the european countries visited Madurai's tourist places in & around MADURAI.Also the NORTH INDIAN Tourists are coming in more number to visit MADURAI's Meenakshi temple & RAMESWARAM. Due to this 2 important pilgrim centers & cool spots like kodaikanal & REST spot KANYAKUMARI , Tamilnadu had seen an enormous growth in TOURISM . Did you remember , a few days ago , myself - the same MADURAI GILLI disclosed a news here about the ADLABS multiplex in madurai.

I said the old GANESH Theater near theppakulam was bought by ADLABS Groups & it will be upgraded to the ADLABS multiplex soon....You people doubted me & said that the ganesh theater complex was not enough for building multiplex.

But , in today's 04-09-2007 DINAKARAN newspaper , it was confirmed that my news was true....they had posted the photo also....please someone upload it here........

Regarding your doubt.......ADLABS had bought some small buildings in & around Ganesh theatre & setting up the commercial complexes to make it as a multiplex......Also , in the theater , there will not be the FILM ROLLS as old ........they will use a modern PROJECTOR which will use a CD/DVD to show the film in the screen..........

WELCOME -----------ADLABS GANESH Multiplex A/C Dts.......to Madurai
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also , Many more theatres inside the city & its outskirts are preparing to be converted into the high-class multiplexes.........Also there are new multiplexes coming in the outskirts of the city/..........

One example is that :
****************

In our area AVANIYAPURAM , the old PADMA theatre was bought by some groups and the renovation & upgradation & construction works are going on ........Very soon we can add the PADMA in theaters who is taking RELEASE films.........Already the old MATHU theater was now upgraded to new VETRI A/c Dts which is now doing its business well with the release os RAJINI'S SIVAJI.

But , Padma theatre in AVANIYAPURAM has more enough spaces to be converted as MULTIPLEX..........It may be CINEMAX groups who is upgrading it.....But it's not the sure news & I can't judge it because even the local real estate brokers of avani & villapuram area didn't know the new OWNER of it.They simply say it was sold to a RICH-Man of MUMBAI , whenever we ask about it.

Madurai TRANSPORT corporation has to concern more on the uniformity of city-buses & Bus-boards & numbers.....It's troubling even the Madurai public .....Then how can a uneducated / non-madurai people can manage ...?

1 . In the bus-frontglass , it was painted as No.76 ( Periyar - Kariyapatti which is more populated with uneducated poor people ) and the side glasses of the buses , showing the busstops in the same-route , the Informing board is showing No.27 ( Periyar - University area ).........Mostly the people from kariyapatti-uneducated poors identify their local buses by TIME & COLOURS/Bus-conductors-drivers or the painting in the front-glass door........When the MTC changes the buses & its routes like this .... these people are getting frustrated & unable to find their local buses , making unwanted controversials with the Bus-drivers/conductors......

Note :
*****
If the bus was paintes as No.76 , it should run in the route of No.76 only.....it should not be diverted to any other routes , may lead to confusion & unwanted expenses to the public.

2. Uniformity of buses :
******************
The buses in ORANGE-ordinary------buses in BLUE-LSS------Buses in YELLOW-GREEN-City express ---Buses in full GREEN - Circle buses....

This rule should be maintained properly till last....One day , it's coming ususual and in another day, LSS/City express means it'll will also confuse the PUBLIC & particularly Daily passengers.........Also , Ordinary orange buses with a sticker of LSS/City express charging the high tickets , confusing & making passengers angry.
Note:
*****
Uniformity in city buses should be maintained till last.....MTC should complaint the higher authorities for the scarcity of buses/repairs.

3.Govt., employees APPROACH :

One day , in bye-pass road , a non-madurai passenger gotinto the ordinary orange bus came from the outskirt....The passenger asked ticket for a bus-stop where LSS won't stop.....The bus-conductor replied him that it came from out-skirt & it's a long route bus, similar to LSS and won't stop....Fight began.....Passenger said " I am a non-maduraite coming from coimbatore & I don't know the routes ...please sir ... stop or even slow down near the stop & I will get down " .... Conductor said "No....the bus is already late.....you can getdown in the next stop ( which is 1.5 kms from the stop ) & return here." Passenger said " I am oldman, helpless & I don't know how to return here from there" ......Conductor with frustration said " Erangunaa erangu .... Illaaati poya " .....Passenger also in angry , fought with conductor , which then lead to a severe incident....Yes....the young Conductor & Driver beat the old man who laid down in the ground helpless......
Note :
*****
MTC should teach the conductors & drivers for how to behave with the public......Or the emploees like this should be given severe punishment/suspension.Also If there were necessary Bus-shelters & Information boards, this incident would not be happened...MTC , now in a WORST condition in maintanance & service should know how to serve for the public.
If the govt., employees behave harshly like this with the public , then How can the public Support them when they were in trouble ?

Please Remember the Govt., Employees STRIKE , afew years ago for reduction in BONUS pay.......Public was happy to see them struggling & was not pity on them.....Please try to do your BEST for Public.

^^ What mdu-gilli said is 100% true. City bus(MTC) conductors are very rude to the public, no matter boys, girls, women, men, educated or uneducated. The aged conductors are very rude than the younger conductors!!!(but believe me, rikshaw wala's are kindful and honest.)

What about the proposed new airlines - KINGFISHER & AIR DRAVIDA to madurai ?

I came to know from someone that AIR DRAVIDA applied the civil aviation to permit them to operate flights from Madurai to MUMBAI & HYDERABAD via..CHENNAI...............CIVIL AVIATION ministry is delaying this. Is it true ?

What about RUDRADEV Pilot training academy-flying school in madurai ? Is this also delaying by the Civil aviation minister ?

Will Rudradev aviation start passenger flights from madurai to any part of our country ? As from a news disclosed by RAVI of RR Industries........He said the upcoming IT SEZ by Rudradev will provide nearly 30,000 houses having a population of nearly 2 lakhs.........& the IT park & industry will employ 85,000 persons directly & 25,000 persons indirectly.....Like Rudradev IT SEZ , Many more companies had applied center to start IT SEZ & Industriesin madurai with large townships which in addition will double the population of present MADURAI.........Then Madurai will need more international operations & operations to the new routes like New Delhi, Kolkatta ,Ahmedabad , Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bhubhaneshwar , Guwahati, Tirupati etc.,.....At that moment Rudradev aviation will not forget to connect Madurai with international routes, he said.

Anyway , RR Industries or Rudradev is playing a vital role in the development of Madurai...............Thanks to Rudradev on behalf of MADURAI.

The Chennai-based Rs41.65-crore turnover G V Films Limited has decided to build an integrated commercial complex housing shopping mall, multiplexes and hotel in 23 Tier 2 cities in Tamil Nadu.

"Branded as GV Studio City, the complex will house a shopping mall, multiplexes (3-5 screens) and a hotel," said A Venkatramani, director.

The cities that are on G V Films radar are thriving business cities of Tamil Nadu. "There are no integrated complexes in Tier 2 cities even though cost is not a factor for the viewers. Further the GV Studio City will become the landmark structure in those cities," he explained.

"The first GV Studio City will be inaugurated in Thanjavur shortly. We are negotiating for land in Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai," added V Subramonian, CEO.

Each project would cost between Rs25 and Rs.40 crore and will be financed through a mix of debt and internal accruals.

According to Subramonian, the company will first complete the projects in Tamil Nadu before branching off to other states.

Meanwhile the company is continuing negotiations with Shanghai Film Group Corporation of Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group and Growth Global Limited, UK to set up GV Studio City in Shanghai and China.

On the proposal to demerge the company's operations into three different entities, Subramonian said Bombay Stock Exchange's (BSE) sanction was awaited. Once thje approval has been obtained, G V Films will approach the Madras High Court for its permission.

He also said the company's internet division would start operations shortly. The company has bought the internet rights for several Indian and 8,000 Hollywood movies. These will be streamed for a fee.

"We can also dub these movies in Indian languages and release them here. The dubbing cost will be low while the revenue potential is high," Subramonian added.

Akshaya Homes to develop SEZs

BS Reporter / Chennai September 01, 2007
Planned in Madurai, Trichy and Tirunelveli.

Chennai-based realty developer Akshaya Homes plans to develop special economic zones (SEZs) in tier 2 cities of Madurai, Trichy and Tirunelveli. The company is in the process of acquiring land in the three cities at a cost of Rs 150 crore.

Plans for SEZ development are still in their nascence, Chitty Babu, managing director, Akshaya Homes, said.

The company has 11 ongoing projects on a combined area of 2.2 million sft, and expects to execute 60 per cent of the combined project work by the end of the current fiscal. He said the current potential of the 11 projects is around Rs 770 crore and the company expects to close the current fiscal at Rs 350 crore.

Akshaya Homes recorded a total turnover of Rs 101 crore during fiscal 2007. “Besides the current 11 projects on hand, we have signed up for 10 more projects and expect to achieve the Rs 1,000-crore milestone by fiscal 2009,” he said.

Chitty Babu said the company would require an additional Rs 200 crore in capital to touch the Rs 1,000-crore mark by the end of fiscal 2009, which would be funded primarily through an equity-debt mix of 80:20. He ruled out the possibility of a public listing in the near future.

The company plans to invest Rs 25 crore in infrastructure, manpower and technology to meet the Rs 350-crore turnover mark during the current financial year.

Akshaya Homes has completed 126 projects till date and plans to come up with residential projects in Madurai, Salem, Trichy, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Disney World has it. Universal Studios has it. Now, Chennai has it, too.

What are we talking about?

Ride Simulation Theatre (RST) has arrived in Chennai. This show, the first-of-its-kind in the country, was developed first by Flight Avionics, a UK company. Premier Funtech is the Indian company which has the license to manufacture RST in India.

The theatre has an Eighteen-seater platform, which moves and gyrates according to the visuals on the screen. The film is screened by a projector and computer-generated images appear on screen. The movement of the seats on the platform synchronises with the visuals appearing on screen. This gives a three dimensional effect and the rider feels as if he is moving along with the images.

Each show lasts for seven minutes and at present, they have 18 varieties of rides. Some of the rides are Roller coaster, High Speed Jet, Pyramid Explorations, River Rides, Car Racing and Space Sojourns.

J. C. D. Prabhakaran, one of the Directors of the company, says, " Every time I came to Spencer plaza, I found that there were no entertainment centres for the shopper." He added, "For any fun centre in Chennai, people have to travel around thirty kilometres outside the city. I thought a place like this in the heart of the city, would attract more crowds."

Plans are on the anvil for opening one more theatre in Anna Nagar and three more outside the city - in Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy.

What about the proposed Air Dravida & Kingfisher flights to madurai ?

We need to wait for some months as Air Dravida hasnt got the permission yet to operate as a regional carrier. But once permission is granted Madurai-Chennai flight is definetely on the cards. After Kingfisher had bought stake in Air Deccan, it looks like they will use air deccan time slots to increase their operation between the metro and bigger cities. So we could most probably see only Air Deccan expanding in Madurai. This is just my opinion and it could be wring too.

The kinnimangalam land is adjacent to existing IT Sez in vadapalanji.. the madurai corporation proposed the kochadai land for IT park during the early stages.. ELCOT chose the ilandhaikulam land..

The rudradev aviation is in the verge of getting the permission for Aviation academy in Madurai...according to Mr.Praful patel.. few days back..

Both Fenner and Caparo Engineering will be setting up their units at Nilakottai SIPCOT which is on the Madurai-Kodai road stretch of NH 7, 5 kms before Kodai road. These projects are being developed very much based on Madurai as its the closest big city and Fenner already has presence in Madurai. Once the four laning work gets completed its should just be a matter of minutes before you can reach the SIPCOT estate from the outskirts of Madurai.

This would actually be good for the city as we could see expansion of the city on that stretch also.

Thanks for sharing this MukeshWorld.

I think the future of Madurai growth lies along the ringroad near the Airport area..
with Rudradev township, Sahara Homes, Maangalya developers township, pearl infrastructure township & IT Park and the govt proposed SIPCOT industrial park SEZ, it would be bustling with activity few years down the lane..

^^ Even few years back i was expecting future growth along the ring road closer to airport. The real surprise to me is growth along the MDU-Trichy NH, which hasn't materialised. Artificial price rise due to the developments such as Integrated bus stand, High court bench, Integrated market complex etc could have been the reason.

Ring road has been a good example on what a 27 kms of new road can do. We have half the ring now, connection north to south on one side. The road connecting west to south will be ready by March 2008. I hope they begin the work on the remaining stretch before the end of this year. If they get completed, that will be nearly 60 kms of 4 lane road surrounding the city.

The current NH to Othakadai will soon become SH, and the new alignment NH road between Othakadai and Pandi Koil could become new corridor of growth. The growth on the western part of the city will be based on how well the new bypass between Sholavandhan and Kappalur is further linked to the airport by access roads. Also Madurai-Theni NH neads to be 4 laned, currently its narrow with lots of bends.

Chennai, Sept 17: With the state getting a steady flow of investments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said his government was committed to providing world class infrastructure to support the growth of industry in general and the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in particular.

Inaugurating the seventh edition of CII’s ICT event ‘Connect 2007’, he said skill development was a priority area for the government and called upon the CII to partner with the state government for creating a model of inclusive development where access to jobs would not be the preserve of a few privileged institutions of those belonging to the elite groups but would be open to all.

“I am acutely conscious that the human resources of the state have to be further strengthened. On my initiative, the Union government is setting up an Indian Institute of Information Technology for Design and Manufacturing near Chennai. I have also requested the Centre to set up an additional IIT at Madurai, IISER at Tiruchirappalli and an IIM at Coimbatore,” he said.

The government had taken special steps to strengthen the system of technical education in the state, he added.

The State government is creating “corridors of excellence” all over Tamil Nadu to achieve inclusive growth. The initiatives are expected to take off within a month.

Talking to The Hindu on Monday on the sidelines of Connect 2007, Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das said: “We are committed to developing every region in Tamil Nadu and not those located in and around Sriperumbudur. We are creating corridors of excellence in three phases. The first one runs from Chennai to Hosur through Vellore. The second one stretches from Coimbatore to Erode and between Madurai and Tuticorin.”

“The first stage involves setting up of IT and industrial parks, followed by creation of other infrastructure. It would take at least three-five years to realise the benefits. As of now, the project is going on the right track. The setting up of SEZ in Virudhunagar is meant to spread the growth throughout the Madurai-Tuticorin region,” he said.

Chief Secretary L. K. Tripathy said the government was taking a number of initiatives to develop Tier-II cities.

“Developing Tier-II cities does not mean creating IT hubs alone; we will create an eco-system for proper functioning of the automobiles, garments and leather and textile sectors. Madurai and Coimbatore is ready for take-off. Within a month, bhoomi puja will be held in other cities, including Salem and Tiruchi. Thereafter, the project will be flagged off,” he said.

New Delhi: Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked as the leading cities in India in terms of the growth potential for economic and social development, according to a rating of 48 Indian cities by consultant Ernst & Young. The firm developed a rating methodology that assesses several cities on their potential for economic, urban and social development.
“The traditional method of evaluating city potential on the basis of limited parameters, such as population and per capital income, has outlived its utility,” claimed Ganesh Raj, partner and head of real estate practice at E&Y.
Evaluated on five indices, including prosperity, governance, business environment, infrastructure and quality of life, the rating ranks the cities, all of which are covered by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
According to a summary of the report, Delhi and Greater Mumbai have been ranked A++, while Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata are A+ cities. Pune and Ahmedabad get an A.
Surat, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Vadodara, Vishakapatnam and Jaipur get B++ cities ranking. Coimbatore, Lucknow, Bhopal figure in the list of B cities while Madurai, Patna and Srinagar have been categorized as C cities. Delhi is the leader in the infrastructure index with Chennai and Hyderabad faring well. Visakhapatnam and Nagpur have been ranked highly on both business environment and infrastructure index.
The Ficci-Ernst&Young report also undertook a survey of leading investors that suggested they believe that more than $5 billion would be deployed into Indian real estate over the next three years, with 20% saying the deployment would be over $20 billion.
Close to 80% of the respondents believe that in the short to mid-term (three to five years), India as an investment destination is ‘excellent´ or ‘very good´ compared with other Asian markets such as China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
Also, more than 50% of respondents believe that high growth trajectory (year-on-year growth of 25%) would continue for the next two to three years

^^ No, foundation stone has not been laid yet.

I feel ELCOT has no clear vision for developing TIDEL parks in Tier II cities. Earlier ELCOT and TN govt had announced that after CBE TIDEL park, the same would be developed in Madurai followed by Trichy and so on. It seems now that they are just following CM's schedule, where ever he goes they lay the foundation stone there. Foundation stone in CBE was laid in March and in Tirunelveli few months back and still nothing has happened.

We can expect foundation stone to be laid in MDU next month, as CM is coming to the city.

But after laying of foundation stone, ELCOT simply leave it.No progress or further follow ups.

As American recession of IT industries are catching up, there may not be requirement of tidel parks in other tier II cities

Paramount airways plans for a $40-60 million MRO facility in Madurai

Madurai-based regional airline Paramount Airways Pvt. Ltd is in talks with aircraft makers Boeing Co. and Airbus Industrie to buy six wide-bodied planes with an aim of launching international operations by fiscal 2011.

The airline, which has so far restricted itself to southern India with an all-Embraer fleet of five leased aircraft, also plans to establish a new aircraft maintenance facility in Madurai in collaboration with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA at an estimated $40-60 million (Rs161-242 crore) investment.

A new company will be floated for the maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) facility to take care of Paramount’s fleet of planes. The MRO is likely to be part of the agreement with Embraer for the 40 additional planes that Paramount plans to order for delivery by 2011.

http://www.livemint.com/2007/09/20014129/Paramount-plans-to-fly-abroad.html

The Madurai-based Paramount Airways is in talks with aircraft manufacturer Embraer for setting up the first maintenance, repair and overhaul centre in the Asia-Pacific region in India, the Managing Director, Mr M. Thiagarajan, said on Wednesday. “We are in discussion with Embraer and could sign the deal as early as next month. The project which involves an investment of $40-60 million could become functional by the end of 2009. We will hold a 51 per cent equity in the project. There is enough land near Madurai airport for the project,” Mr Thiagarajan told Business Line. The MRO project would be set up as a separate profit centre and not as part of the airline.

The management feels that the venture would be a profitable as at present most Embraer aircraft in the region including those operated by the Australian airline Virgin Blue and by several airlines in the Gulf fly to Portugal for maintenance checks. Paramount is also evaluating the option of picking up an equity in an airport although this was unlikely to happen in the immediate future. “We will concentrate on inducting the aircraft and in setting up the MRO. Investment in an airport is an idea we are open to but it is not something that would happen immediately,” Mr Thiagarajan said.

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2007/09/20/stories/2007092050930700.htm

Thats a whopping 160-240 crore Rs investment. Looks like this project has the scope of attracting other foreign airline companies to bring their embraer aircrafts to Madurai for maintenance, repair and overhaul.

With Paramount airways planning MRO facility, pilot training institute, Hangars and RR Industries planning for Rudradev aviation academy at Madurai airport, AAI should act fast and start acquiring large tracts of land around the airport for timely starting of these projects. I guess the recently acquired lands as pointed out by madurai gilli was actually for airport expansion. I dont think land acquisition would be a problem, but AAI should act fast and acquire enought land keeping in mind the year 2025. They need to act soon as suddenly this region around the airport seems to be the focus of real estate and other companies.

FENER EDGE , A reputed Interior-Designing company had renovated our MADURAI’s old GANESH Theater into ADLABS GANESH & for further information ADLABS GANESH is not a multiplex mall but it is highly sophisticated with various facilities like CUBE system projector , XENON DTS Audio system , Digital video effects , fully air-conditioned hall , luxurious seatings etc.,

Another information :
===============

Reliance Ambhani groups – ADLABS has not forgetten to bring in the MULTIPLEX culture into the temple city. Yes , ADLABS is going to change the PRIYA-Complex at Anna Nagar into a world-class 3-screen Multiplex which was proved by the above said FINER EDGE Company’s website.Yes , please visit : www.fineredge.com to taste a new feeling that our city MADURAI is going to possess a 3-screen world-class multiplex.FINEREDGE is doing the interior design for the ADLABS PRIYA- multiplex theater in MADURAI.

And this is the best time to guess : Yes guys :

Do you remember in Madurai II or Madurai III thread some news regarding this was posted by someone , from a leading tamil daily…

RELIANCE FRESH to come up in MADURAI :
Reliance bought 11 cinema-theaters ……. Yes….ELEVEN Theaters in Madurai……Some-one had doubted in the thread that why RELIANCE had bought 11 cinema-theaters to open RELIANCE FRESH Market.

Reliance Fresh Coming to madurai..

Reliance Fresh is in talks for buying 11 theatres to open reliance markets..

http://www.dinakaran.co.in/epaperdin...079&code=17823

Yes, there is no connection with RELIANCE Fresh in buying 11 cinema-theaters…..These 11 theaters – only for ADLABS cinemas…..May be some turned into Luxurious theaters like ADLABS Ganesh & some may be turned into world-class MULTIPLEXES like ADLABS Priya multiplex. It depends upon the availiability of space/land in the theater. If anyone find what are all the theaters bought by RELIANCE in Madurai- then we can easily guess ourselves that which are all going to be luxurious theaters and which are all going to be Multiplexes.Anyone try it & post the names of the theater & location here.

TIDCO has called for tenders to choose a JV partner/major promoter for the Virudhunagar SEZ. From the TIDCO advertisement its clear that the SEZ will be on the NH 7 closer to Virudhunagar. It goes on to say that it ill be 60kms from Madurai airport, hence it should be less that 50 kms from the southern suburbs of Madurai. With 4 lane NH and good railway connectivity from Madurai to Virudhunagar, we surely will benefit a lot from this project.

Any way , with no doubt.....I can say, with its attractive upcoming projects, MADURAI will be the second largest city soon within 2-3 years & I can assure you that It can even compete with CHENNAI due to its "SPLENDID GROWTH IN A VERY SHORT SPAN".
First Stop comparing madurai with coimbatore ! MADURAI IS NO MATCH FOR COIMBATORE. You cant say dat madurai was second largest all because of only the corporation area is 3sq. km more than that of cbe.
Since 90's coimbatore was much more industrialized than madurai, Size is not an indicator of development. Madurai cant be next to chennai or cbe in any terms either development or population. Coimbatore already has more projects in hand as well as under construction. Already many MNC's are in cbe such as BOSCH, L&T, CTS, TCS- centre of excellence, PEROT SYSTEMS, SPHERIS, SUTHERLAND GLOBAL SERVICES, FLOW SERVE,etc.,
So how can u say that madurai would be become second largest city in next 2-3 yrs with no countable projects under execution now.?????

My reply :
********
Dear Brand-coimbatore ,

How can you say “MADURAI is no match for COIMBATORE “?

Madurai is a world-famous historical city with its prestigious Meenakshiamman temple & other wonders like Lord Murugan’s 2 houses in Arupadaiveeedu- First house – THIRUPARANKUNDRAM & another house – PALAMUTHIRCHOLAI. Also – the famous HILL SPOT-TEMPLE –Alagarkovil is making splendid to MADURAI. Then , with the presence of KOODAL-AZHAGHAR KOVIL – one among the 108 Tirupatees & Sooriya NAGAR temple , going to spark like famous Bangalore-ISKCON TEMPLE soon & also ISCKON temple of lord KRISHNA’s , SAIBABA TEMPLE , Famous St.MARY’s church , Lurthu Mary’s church & Stone – temple church- MADURAI is sparkling with the names of
• TEMPLE CITY
* ATHENS OF THE EAST
• LORD’S GARDEN
• DRAVIDIAN’s WONDER etc .,
How can you ask me the silly question , degrading my native city & saying it is no match for the recent-grown city COIMBATORE.?

Also you said – COIMBATORE is the second largest city , already beaten MADURAI , a 20 years back in 90’s itself. Please visit the ELCOT’s website – they had produced separate presentation for MADURAI & COIMBATORE. Please see the city profile – MADURAI is the 2nd largest city in TN next only to Chennai and COIMBATORE is the 3rd largest city in TN next only to Chennai & Madurai , they said. I don’t know on what basis , they had done it. But , It’s the data coming from TN govt’s reputed organization – ELCOT also it was put up in the website recently only so there is no chance for ASSAULTness , carelessness etc., O.K., I am agreeing with you that COIMBATORE is 2nd largest in TN now in land surface because MADURAI is only 52 sq.km for which the corporation limit survey works were done when our INDIA got its independence ( only for joke ) – anyway-it should be 30-40 years back. But COIMBATORE with 108 sq.km is not like that seeing the corporation extension often.Only with this DATA , How can you argue with us that MADURAI is no match for COIMBATORE ? Before that , you should have thought deeply that the main reason for the non-development of MADURAI was due to lack of INDUSTRIALIZATION & UNEMPLOYMENT. But the splendid growth of KOVAI was due to industrialization & employment but more than 50% of the workers employed in KOVAI-TIRUPUR belt is from MADURAI & around only that one coimbatorean itself posted in the thread. You should also consider that with corporation boundaries , not extended for YEARS & with only 52 sq.km area-madurai has 72 wards. Also , coimbatore with 108 sq.km has the same 72 wards. How can you ask me this qns , my dear ?

Also your brain should have thought that NON-DEVELOPMENT of MADURAI is due to lack of infrastructure & efforts not taken by govt.,………..But , now , MADURAI’s INFRASTRUCTURE – all in ROADWAYS , RAILWAYS , AIRWAYS – changing world-class & MADURAI – concerned more , than we expected , by both the state & central govt.,s – With lots of INDUSTRIES coming ahead in all fields, with more in the Information technology field – And the city’s culture & people’s taste turning into METROPOLITAN style like MULTIPLEXES , SHOPPING MALLS , TOWNSHIPS , APARTMENTS etc., Just imagine the future of MADURAI- my dear.

With lack of all these – itself , it’s the 2nd largest city according to the govt., and not from me-----with all these coming ahead in more number & MADURAI corporation also taking enormous efforts to develop madurai & extend corporation’s boundaries which include 4 municipalities – THIRUMANGALAM( exactly 23 kms from today’s MADURAI in south-west ) , AANAYOOR( exactly 10 kms from today’s MADURAI in north) , AVANIYAPURAM which is the possessor of MADURAI AIRPORT( exactly 5 kms from today’s MADURAI in south ) & THIRUPARANKUNDRAM & town panchayats such as vilaacherry , vilaangudi , NILAYUR-1 , NILAYUR-2 , perungudi , etc., & also in plan to extend its boundaries till OTHAKADAI which is the possessor of MADURAI’s HIGH COURT buildings( exactly 10 kms from today’s madurai in east)………..How can you make such silly qns to me by degrading madurai ?

COIMBATORE is a TEXTILE TOWN –I agree with you but MADURAI also having textile industries what in Madurai these industries in a huge number , owned by small owners belonging to middle-class but in COIMBATORE – the industries ranging from 25-50 were setup in huge acres belonging to the hi-class owners.Look…TN Govt., & central govt., plans to setup TEXTILE parks in madurai with investment of Rs.35 crores which will be the largest textile park in TN.Regarding the textiles field…. TIRUPUR & ERODE ranks higher than the KOVAI but I appreciate the KOVAI because it got the name “ MANCHESTER OF SOUTH-INDIA” , know?

Also you are jealous of my saying “ MADURAI is the 2nd largest bullion market in India next to Mumbai “ ……It needs no proof because the presence of more than 1000 jewellery shops & showroom in the madurai city-limit itself will prove this…..Behind that you want any links means , I am ready to give the link to prove it.

My aim is not to hurt you or coimbatoreans or degrade coimbatore . And we are not jealous of the growth of coimbatore also. We are talking about our MADURAI’s short-span splendid growth. You said CHENNAI took nearly 25 years to become METRO , Hyderabad , pune , Ahmedabad , Bangalore took 15-20 years to become METRO.How can MADURAI become in 5 years ? I agree with you. But if it tooks 50 years too to become a METRO , Then also we will be happy. There is the exaggerated number to make my friends happy. I had written there that MADURAI will be the 2nd largest city soon. But you had mistaken it and drag COIMBATORE yourselves to the 3rd. Did I say anything about the coimbatore there ? I won’t because I will be happy if coimbatore grows but you people are jealous of the growth of MADURAI.

I should have replied you that day itself …… that too in that thread itself….. But only to respect the requests made by my friends MADURAI VEERAN , MADURAI etc., [ To stop the controversies on city vs city ] …….I didn’t reply you at that time.

Anyway , till today , Your saying “MADURAI is no match for COIMBATORE” made me angry & hurt my heart & I intend to describe you the truth………Here I poured what are all I planned to say you…… Anyway I request other MADURAI friends not to reply if even coimbatoreans made a argue reply on this even after studying this.

I had a pleasant ride in my bike today morning in the RING Road.........I wondered on seeing the tremendous growth in this sector.....All green-lands [ till last MAY] was turned into plots & residential areas,now.....Hyderabad-based SREEVAARI chemical industry acquired the land nearly 10-15 acres & going on expansion.....yes they continue buying the lands, planning for a BIG Project. The site was fully loaded with SAND & it is ready to see the civil works inauguration.

Nearer to the SERMATHAAI VAASAN COLLEGE [it is in inner-side of the road]......I am saying - On the Main ring road...I was able to see two types of BIG Acquirement by somebody & I don't know who are they & also there was no information board in the site. First property is nearly 40-50 acres , fully surrounded by horizontal stones covered by steel wires ( May be some TOWNSHIPS / IT PARKS / INDUSTRIES / EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION / Entertainment BIG shopping mall cum multiplex purpose ).............

Another is in same condition as above .... nearly 20-25 acres ..........

Both the properties are cleaned & ready to see its civil works soon.

And on the main road - just after the KLN College road junction when we come from Maatuthavani - Many labours arein the work of cutting trees , levelling the land , firing the grasses etc., this site in nearly 50 acres soon turn into some BIG project.

And in the road between the VELAMMAL GARDENS junction( Rameswaram highway) in the ring road and the Maatuthavani(chennai highway) ...... Civil works-major works are going on the wheels....

Also in SURVEYOR COLONY or May be KARPAGAM NAGAR- along the road from Maatuthavani to PUDUR , extreme types of buildings are going on in the westernside of the road...A tremendous Building is going on nearing completion………….May be a Large Hospital / Shopping mall like SPENCERS of CHENNAI / Apartments ( The outside vision is not matching the chance of APARTMENT because in the center of the HUGE building - a large OPEN SPACE designed for getting the sunlight is there as one in SPENCERS of CHENNAI.....It's showing many Lifts & may be escalators after the building works finished......It has more chance to be a SHOPPING MALL Cum Multiplex / Hospital like Meenakshi mission / STAR Hotel.Anyone ride in this road ..... please snap a shot of it & paste it in the thread.

In the Ring road , going south after the Avaniyapuram road junction – the large Madurai’s DREAM Residential project – SAHARA CITY HOMES is going to take off its shape soon. It had covered all its land with horizontal stones bounded by steel wires-nearly 105 Acres with a large Coconut garden in its center. The construction of OFFICE building and Waiting hall for the customers is going on now. The small board informing the public about the PROPERTY was already laid in GREEN colour & now , a large information board was laid inside their site which is awaiting for the paintings about the project. This board will inform the public that the Bookings for the various types of houses is OPEN & The PRESTIGIOUS – TOWNSHIP will be ready by so-on-so date. I think they had planned it for madurai by March 2008-Feb 09. Soon , the site is going to have the uniform compound wall. The works will be started soon for the construction of the compound walls- The compound walls will be painted the dream buildings of the project, salient feautures of the project , facilities it going to have etc.,

Yes ….these methods were followed strictly in each and every SAHARA project.
In LUCKNOW , 1. they acquired LANDS first.
2.Covering of boundaries by horizontal stones & steel wires.
3. Small Information board about the property
4.Construction of the office site
5.Laying of a LARGE Information board about the dates of booking & completion of project.
6.Construction of colourful compound walls showing the project’s various features & a TREMENDOUS –Arche.
7. Dividing the whole-land into number of PLOTS.
8.Construction of Apartments
9. Construction of BASIC amenities
10.Construction of houses , depending upon the demands & other facilities , said by the company.

In MADURAI- Already 5 steps were completed ……….. we can soon expect the construction of compound walls & arche.

Then going back, NAGARATHINAM – ANGAMMAL college of arts & science is goin to be started soon by the next academic year.

Many more small-industries in plastics , steel products manufacturing , oil-seals etc., had occupied the RING ROAD nearer to the SAHARA city homes.

With the dream of INTERNATINAL AIRPORT , madurai airport is expanding on its eastern & southern sides., waiting for the land acquisition ( Acquired but not started extending its boundaries ). As there is no way to the south-bound buses if the RING-ROAD near china udaippu cuts-off for airport expansion , AAI is delaying its acquisition. If the 4-LANE tutucorin NH concludes & open , AAI will destroy this road & concentrate on the airport expansion.

Then , RR Industries is playing a vital role in making a DREAM project of MADURAI with Rs.4700 crores investment in 750 acres of land. They had bought land in between valayankulam & sholankurini ( 1.5km from valayankulam & 0.5 km from sholankurini)….they had acquired 400 acres of land but no covering of boundaries. It includes 3 small villages such as NALLUR , KALUVANKULAM &another village. The company is buying more lands , in a plan to extend its project to 750 acres.Last week too , the company had registered some lands , local people from sholankurini said. RR is believing MADURAI more than CHENNAI in its business & it expects MADURAI will do it, an educated man from sholankurini said. Now, with numerous numbers of HIGH-MASS lights installed in the site , LEVELLING OF EARTH is going on , night & day- with nearly 20 people working as site-watchmen & more number of people as labours with some machines such as JCB , BOCLAIN &some from foreign nations. I think the BOOMI-POOJA was silently done for this or will they do the BOOMI-POOJA for civil works after the land was leveled.? I don’t know.

With this MEGA project , R.L Institute of nautical sciences is also growing rapidly , to cater to the need of Devoloping MADURAI.
SIPCOT had planned a 1000 acre industrial estate in this area only which is called Eliyaarpatthi.

RR Ind., had demanded TN Govt ., to give a good Road infrastructure to their proposed SEZ. Also they had added that if Govt., allows – the company will lay the good roads from the site to TUTUCORIN-NH.It is awaiting for the answer from govt., but not willing to wait & delay , they are doing other works-day & night..

From the local brokers of sholankurini , valayankulam – they said that the actual rate of lands bought by the RR company was Rs.2-5 lakhs / acre till their proposal but the company had given the sellers – 4 fold of the original rate- Rs.20 lakhs/acre.Now , with the start of the civil works in the site & TUTUCORIN NH being 4-laned , the land cost touches its height to Rs.35-50 lakhs/acre. The 4-lane road of tutucorin NH is going to pass through Sholankurini & joining with the CHENNAI NH near OTHAKADAI.Also they added that due to the Extreme growth of MADURAI – there are no lands to buy till the KAARIYAPATTI of virudhunagar district.

Dear Sir, I am happy to get your mail but could read only yesterday owing to my tour of pilgrimage to Shirdi, Pandarpur and Mantralayam. First of all I would like to answer all questions put regarding the proposed Kamaraj Memorial Medical College.
1) The site will be at within 30 K.M. from Madurai probably near Kariapatti.
2) At present we are finding ways and means to mobilize funds from generous donors especially N.R.Is.
3) Though it is a statutory requirement to construct a 300 bed hospital to start a medical college, our aim is to upgrade the same to 750 bedded one so as to admit 150 students every year. We shall extend our free medical service to poor who deserve.
4) Definitely, it will be raised to a Deemed University.
You can view our website:www.kamarajmedicaleducation.org
You can contact me for any matter through the e-mail
Thanking you,

our MADURAI's MAATUTHAAVANI integrated Bus-terminus badly needs the upgradatio , maintanence & basic amenities installation.

It should be developed on the lines of Asia's biggest bus-terminus - Chennai's KOYAMBEDU CMBT.

Because it is the 2nd largest integrated bus-terminus in Tamilnadu next only to chennai but the neatness & facilities is not upto the mark.It needs a good maintanence because it is now being used by several thousands of passengers daily.

Will CORPORATION of MADURAI do the needful ?

...Apart from Sriperumbudur, Caparo has another 120 acres of land in Madurai for setting up automobile parts manufacturing units. We will soon develop these sites as major industrial hubs, thus, directly and indirectly generating job avenues for the locals," Lord Paul, who hails from Jalandhar, said.....

^^ Great to know that, Caparo Engineering, apart from its proposed unit at Nilakottai SIPCOT(near Madurai) will also be investing in Madurai. The above news say 120 acres, so it must be a huge investment. Good that after TVS, Fenner, Hi-Tech Arai and others Caparo Engineering will also be setting up automobile parts manufacturing unit. The following is the news about previous investment by Caparo Engineering near Madurai.

Caparo Engineering to setup unit near Madurai
Caparo Engineering India will initially invest Rs. 25 crore to set up a stamping unit over an area of 20 acres at the SIPCOT complex which will provide employment to 250 people directly and another 150 indirectly. Over the next two years, it will invest an additional Rs 15 crore, and is expected to start operations by October 2009.

New initiative: tracking the tourism circuit in Madurai

Staff Reporter

Efforts on to transform the district into a major tourism hub

Collector seeks status of various projects

Focus on improving infrastructure facilities

MADURAI: Steps to put tourism-related projects on track and tap further potential in the Temple City are gaining momentum.

With the objective of transforming the district into a major tourism hub, the district administration has done a comprehensive review of all ongoing projects to speed up their completion. Plans are afoot to take up new initiatives.

Collector S.S. Jawahar convened a meeting of all government officials concerned recently and sought the status of various projects.

Major schemes that were reviewed included the development of Jain monuments at Muthupatti and Mettupatti, sprucing up the tourism infrastructure in and around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, giving a new look to the Tirumalai Nayak Palace and upgrading the infrastructure at Tirupparankundram and Alagarkoil, which are among the six abodes (‘Arupadai Veedu’) of Lord Muruga.

An official in the Tourism Department here said that work on lighting system had been completed at the Jain cave in Muthupatti.
Works under way

The ongoing works included the laying of an approach road with culvert and handrails, renovation of information system and provision of water.

At Mettupatti, a restaurant and a retaining wall had been constructed, besides an approach road around Teppakulam.

Construction of steps leading to the Kamatchi Temple on the hill and provision of drinking water facility were under progress, the official said.
Tirupparankundram

Works estimated at Rs.81 lakh were being carried out around Tirupparankundram. An eco park was coming up at the locality along with a boat house, healthcare centre and a vehicle parking lot. A cloakroom had been constructed at the foot of Kasi Viswanathar Temple. Fibreglass reinforced plastic boats were being purchased for boating at Saravanapoigai.

Additional electrification would be carried out inside the Subramaniaswamy Temple at Tirupparankundram.

Eight rest sheds had been completed in the pathway to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple along with power room, provision for lighting and water facilities, the official said.

The Madurai-based Paramount Airways that took to the skies in 2005 and plans to have a national presence by 2010-11 is currently looking to expand operations to Kerala. The airline is also looking to diversify and could set up the first Embraer Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in the Asia-Pacific region at Madurai. The airline Managing Director, Mr M. Thiagarajan, outlined the airline’s future plans in an interview to Business Line during a recent visit to the Capital.

Excerpts from the interview:

...................

Is Paramount looking at other projects also?

We are in talks with Embraer for setting up a MRO set-up, which would be the first in the Asia-Pacific region at Madurai. We will have more than 51 per cent stake in the project. If the project goes through, then the MRO should be ready by the end of 2009.

A month after the Union government unveiled a new policy for regional airlines, makers of small planes that can carry up to 100 passengers are wooing aviation start-up firms that could end up as big buyers of such aircraft.
Three airlines in South India—Air Dravida, EmricAir and Star Aviation—have applied for a regional airline licence from the ministry of civil aviation, with another half a dozen expected to follow suit. These airlines, together with the existing scheduled carriers, are expected to buy at least 300 aircraft in the next few years, the ministry estimates.
A Bombardier CRJ 900. Planes made by firms such as Embraer of Brazil and Bombardier of Canada are considered ideal for regional carriers, given the short hops they fly and the fuel efficiency offered
A Bombardier CRJ 900. Planes made by firms such as Embraer of Brazil and Bombardier of Canada are considered ideal for regional carriers, given the short hops they fly and the fuel efficiency offered
Small jets and turboprops, priced at between $20 million and $40 million (Rs80 crore and Rs160 crore) before discounts, capable of seating 40- 100 passengers, are considered ideal for regional carriers given the short hops they fly and the fuel efficiency offered.
Such planes are mostly made by Brazil’s Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA, better known as Embraer, Canada’s Bombardier Inc. and Frenchturboprop maker ATR, a subsidiary of Airbus SAS. Just 13 regional jets from Embraer and Bombardier are part of the country’s fleet of more than 250 aircraft currently.
Regional airlines are being wooed with attractive packages, said the chief executive of a full-service airline. “The range of discount depends upon deep pockets and expansion plans,” said the CEO, who did not want to be named.
He said Bombardier aeroplanes have become the natural choice for start-up airlines since other plane makers were unable to make early deliveries of aircraft. “We are looking at both of them, zeroing in on (Bombardier’s) CRJ700 to start operations early next year. Within a month we shall be able to confirm the deal,” said Martin Sebastian, CMD of EmricAir Aviation Pvt. Ltd that plans to start operations with two planes.
Aviation analyst Pran S. Dasan, who is helping some regional players with aircraft selection, said the decision to buy a regional aircraft could also be influenced by the Russian-made Sukhoi SuperJet 100 that is expected to be in-service by 2009.
Besides delivery, aviation executives and analysts said other issues such as service support are also being worked upon. Unlike large plane makers Boeing Co. and Airbus which, between them, have shared most of the country’s passenger jet sales, new entrants (except ATR) have little back-end support for maintenance of aircraft, pilot training and other checks.
For example, Paramount Airways Pvt. Ltd, which uses five leased Embraer planes, sends them for checks to Portugal or Singapore, making it an expensive proposition.
“They will need to give a better deal or some kind of sops to make the (initial) operations viable,” said a senior airline executive with plans of launching an airline from the South. This executive did not wish to be named as his airline’s launch is still being planned.
Airlines choose planes keeping in mind variables such as spares, pilots, routes they fly and lease rates, among several others, said Dasan, an analyst with Pathfinders Aviation.
Given the expected demand and competition, Embraer may already be setting an aircraft maintenance centre in Madurai as part of a 40-plane deal with Paramount Airways, the airline’s managing director, M. Thiagarajan, said last week. On Monday, an Embraer spokeswoman declined to comment before “final agreements have been reached by all parties
http://www.livemint.com/2007/09/25010009/Small-plane-makers-woo-startu.html
”.

This news give some hope of starting the Embraer aircraft maintenance center in Madurai , this helps the increase in the flights for Madurai. We hope that the international flight service would also start soon.

This 1,130 crore Rs. road development and traffic improvement projects will be implemented through JNNURM. These projects in any case have to be implemented before 2012 as the JNNURM scheme is only for 7 years and already 2 years have passed by. So we can very well expect all the projects including this one to be completed before 2012.

Money from the infusion will be used to invest in the retail business, which is being launched sometime early next year. The company, under Indiabulls Wholesale Services, plans to set up about 30 hypermarkets across the country. These shops will span over 100,000 square feet and will sell goods only in bulk to consumers. Single-item sales will be discouraged. Bulk buyers will be given discounts.

The stores will come up in tier II and tier III cities such as Ahmedabad, Madurai, where consumers have space. The phase one plan will be restricted to 30 stores. The group believes the stores should do business worth Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore everyday.

Five markets to be shifted, says Tripathy

assessment time: Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, left, addressing a review meeting in the city on Tuesday. Madurai Collector S.S. Jawahar is also seen.

MADURAI: A massive improvement plan is on the cards to decongest the city from the bustling vehicular traffic. Besides construction of flyovers, road over-bridges and subways, five markets in the ‘core city’ (southern part of Madurai) is likely to be shifted to the outskirts.

Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting of a high-level committee on traffic improvement here on Tuesday, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy said that the committee, after carefully considering various aspects of decongesting traffic, would submit a report to the Government by November. “We will evaluate short and long-term measures to improve the traffic management system. After consulting the merchants, the five wholesale markets would be shifted to other sites that are also suitable for business.”

Of the 13 radial roads connecting the city with other towns, nine were important in terms of traffic flow. Steps were being taken to connect the Melur-Dindigul road. “We are looking at the missing links. Where there is a level crossing, road over-bridge or underpass is being proposed. Flyovers have been mooted at 18 places,” he said.

Roads along river

Mr. Tripathy said that a majority of officials who took part in the meeting had suggested that the banks along the Vaigai river should be developed with good roads and pedestrian platforms. “Apart from traffic management, we are also looking at traffic engineering and surveillance system,” he said.

Parrying questions on the Periyar dam issue, Mr. Tripathy said that efforts were being taken to implement the Supreme Court orders. Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, had written to the Ministry of Railways to operate high-speed trains (HST) between Chennai and Madurai and Chennai and Coimbatore.

The Chief Secretary said that the State was producing at least 90,000 engineering graduates every year. “We are more concerned about the quality of education in colleges. Information Technology (IT) Park would soon take shape in Madurai,” he added.

Collector S.S. Jawahar, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range) K. Jayanth Murali took part in the meeting.

.....According to him, a large number of retrenched workers from textiles mills in Karur, Tirupur and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu are seeking jobs in Madurai, which houses 120 mills with combined annual revenues of around Rs1,440 crore. Madurai does not have any fully export-oriented textiles unit but exports still account for about 40% of sales.....

http://www.livemint.com/2007/09/25010016/Tirupur-textile-workers-bear-t.html

This article says on how the rupee appreciation is affecting the industries in Tiruppur...
But what we could infer from this is that, Madurai has spinning mills having a turn-over of about Rs.1500 crores.. and added to this is the Integrated Textile park which is set to yield around Rs.1000 crores annually..
It is also good to know that, this industry has minimum chance of getting affected by appreciating rupee, as majority of these mills cater the needs of domestic market.
This would mean there would be around Rs.2500 crores revenue generated by textile industry in Madurai..

With Govt planning 2 IT parks, Rudradev IT park, Dhaya IT park, Pearl IT park..(they might total to about 10 million sq.ft of IT space..)
Madurai will have a flourishing IT industry too..

Madurai already has some industries related to automobile industry established by the TVS Group and by few others (fenner, madras suspensions, TAFE with its largest Tractor plant..).. Now, with Caparo planning to set up its plant and Sundaram establishing the air springs plant... we could expect contribution from the Automobile industry too..

On healthcare front, many new hospitals (eg. Velammal, Reliance, Kamaraj memorial..) are being planned and existing ones are being expanded, meaning they would improve the Medical tourism...

If paramount succeeds in establishing the MRO facility, aviation school along with rudradev aviation school, it would be a huge boom to the aviation sector..

With a multiproduct SEZ coming up in Virudhunagar (2500 acres), within 60 kms from Madurai... also the SIPCOT industrial estate near Airport.. we could expect more contributions from Multiple industries..

With govt planning to improve the tourism in Madurai.. it will draw more tourists to Madurai (41 lakh ppl toured Madurai in 2006!!) producing a thriving tourism industry..

The air is definitely thick with the scope for diversified growth of Madurai.

It all these projects materialize with a span of 5 years.. it will be too good for madurai as will not depend any particular industry...

The plan is same but the SCHEME under which it's going to take its shape is different.....It's not under JNNURM now & it's under "PURAATHAANA NAGARGAL SEERAMAIPPU THITTAM".......

Anyway.....luckily...MADURAI is one of the cities under PNST Scheme........It's good in someway that the cost planned for it under JNNURM will be utilised for another GRAND plan......Corporation will have to utilise it.

They keep on telling that this company or that company will come.

But the fact is Even foundations have not started in any of the 2 tier city. Even CBE Tidel park is getting delayed for one or other reasons. But atleast construction of 2 private IT parks in CBE are already started and in progress.

Tidel parks in other 2 tier cities of TN are a long way to go.

Since American recession on IT sector is fast coming up, there may not be much need of tier 2 cities IT parks.

TN already missed the bus by bureacutic delays.

Aurolab's new manufacturing facility at Madurai

Madurai, Sept. 29 (PTI): Aravind Eye Hospital's Aurolab which produces Intra Ocular lens(IOL) and other surgical instruments, would have a new manufacturing facility in 1,10,000 sq ft area at Veerapanchan near here.

The new facility of Aurolab would be conformed to the international standards set by United States Food and Drug Administration.

It would help Aurolab increase its production capacity by five times, G Srinivasan, President and Dr P Balakrishnan, Managing Director, told reporters here today.

Aurolab which had received ISO 1999 and CE certification for its high-quality products, would continue to provide its products to eye care institutions at cheaper rates, they said.

About 60 per cent of its IOL produced was used by eye care hospitals across the world.

It was also keen to introduce new technology in the manufacturing process while ensuring quality products.

The new facility would bring the manufacturing of various products under one roof and help faster growth of the organisation.

MADURAI: The district administration is planning to provide an exclusive entry and exit point for all south-bound vehicles taking Ring Road at the Mattuthavani Bus Stand, said Collector S.S. Jawahar here on Saturday.

As traffic along Ring Road was expected to increase following the restoration of the route for buses passing through the Palanganatham Bus Stand, it was time to improve facilities at the bus stand and repair the road to facilitate easy flow of traffic, he told reporters.

Separate road

Inspecting Ring Road, he also looked into the possibilities of creating a separate road along the Vandiyur lake bund.

He contemplated the chances of changing the position of the first toll gate from the Mattuthavani Bus Stand to a location farther away to prevent clogging of buses at the entry point of Ring Road.

The district administration also planned to improve basic amenities such as lighting on the road and putting up sign and information boards.

Reflectors would also be installed.

To decongest traffic inside the bus stand following increase in the number of buses, the administration planned to provide separate bays for city buses, Mr. Jawahar said.

Pre-paid autos

There was also plan to introduce a system of pre-paid autos.

Superintendent of Police T.S. Anbu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Prabhakaran, Regional Transport Officers V.P. Ethirajan (South) and K. Muniraj (North) and a host of revenue and Corporation officials accompanied the Collector.

NEW LOOK: A retiring room at the Madurai railway station.

Mundane ambience, worn out mattresses, untidy bedspreads… All these are things of the past when it comes to railway retiring rooms. As part of the ongoing modernisation programme, Southern Railway has sanctioned funds for renovation of retiring rooms at par with industry standards.

In Madurai Division, the frontline managers seem to have taken star hotels as the benchmark. Retiring rooms here will now be a passengers’ paradise what with modern furniture, twin AC units, television, elegant interiors and catering services linked with the food plaza’s multi-cuisine restaurant — all this for just Rs. 750.

“We have taken up this project as a passenger amenity improvement scheme. Twenty-two retiring rooms in Madurai will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.28 lakh. Intercom facility with connectivity to restaurants, security and other services will be available,” Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar said on Saturday.

Retiring rooms in other major stations in the division will be taken up for renovation in a phased manner. The main corridor of the retiring rooms will be covered by surveillance cameras linked to the closed circuit television network of the Railway Protection Force to prevent entry of unauthorised persons.

“We want to make no compromise in the quality of service. The tariff fixed for this ambience is perhaps the cheapest in the city,” he added.

Apart from this, a meditation room for engine drivers has been constructed in the Railway Colony.

Outstation drivers coming to Madurai on duty can use the meditation centre, which also has a music system.

The facility created as per the Railway Board’s directive is expected to manage the stress level of drivers.

A.P. Mishra, Southern Railway Additional General Manager and Director of Public Grievances, visited the renovated retiring rooms and meditation centre on Saturday.

He also held discussions with senior railway officials on the performance of the division on various fronts

Nasscom identifies Pune, Chandigarh, Mysore, Madurai and Tiruchi for growth prospects
Availability of ‘A’ category commercial

real estate space is important

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHENNAI: It is not just the IT and ITES sectors that are growing and need to expand to smaller cities and towns. The development of industrial clusters, corridors, estates, hubs and a whole lot of units in the services sector has virtually choked the State capitals and their suburbs. Both States and the private sector recognise the need to shift to Tier II and Tier III towns to prevent further congestion in major cities and to propel the growth of smaller cities and towns.

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) has already identified a list of second tier cities and towns where development must take place. They include centres such as Chandigarh, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Mangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchi. Some of these towns, including Pune, Mysore, and Coimbatore, are already being crowded with new industries and IT/ ITES units. The pressure on these towns has begun to show, exposing once more the inadequacies of the systems, and the inability of the private sector and the government agencies to act in tandem to promote new investment centres.

What is it that the industry or the investor expects in emerging centres? A cross section of captains of industry and trade has some common demands as well as expectations peculiar to a particular sector.

Industry expectation

In general terms, they want better physical and social infrastructure in these towns. “Some industries and sectors have tried the SEZ type of development, but there appears to be a mixed response. Employees and their families do not want to be out of a town or thrown into a closed gated community. Though they welcome residential colonies, they still prefer to be an integral part of a town or society — not to live by themselves. They do not want to see the same faces day in and day out,” says a senior official of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Nowadays, such colonies and townships have become even more difficult to build, because acquiring land becomes a Himalayan task. Which is why, industry looks to government and its agencies to assist in this process. Physical infrastructure will include roads, transport, services, housing, air and rail connectivity, while social infrastructure should provide for educational institutions, health services, recreation facilities, and hotels.

Driving expansion

Since IT and ITES have been driving this expansion to second tier cities, it may be useful to get its perspective on this development. Cognizant’s Managing Director and President R. Chandrasekaran says: “The primary reason for the IT industry to be attracted to a Tier II city or a Tier III city is its educational infrastructure and the resultant quality talent pool. The second important criterion is infrastructure. Availability of ‘A’ category commercial real estate space, preferably with SEZ notification, good roads, airport with good connectivity, and good hotels, is important. Even if one or more of these may not exist initially, visible efforts to develop them in parallel become important. Otherwise, the initial enthusiasm will die down and companies may not grow in these locations.”

He suggests that State governments can even set up advanced R&D facilities in collaboration with the local universities so that technology skill base can improve in the long run.

But others who have been looking at Coimbatore now either find it difficult to get land, or that it is too costly to make it viable. Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Coimbatore zone Chairman K. Thangaraj says: “We need a city where growth comes without much pain — growth where quality of life is not affected for any section of the society. The growth we have witnessed may only be the tip of an iceberg. Cities such as our’s must focus on a vision for the future. We should look at a Greater Coimbatore, inclusive of the suburbs, where land is still available. Horizontal growth can be planned, with specific areas earmarked for particular uses, and provided good connectivity."

Unless industry, government, and the local body work together to evolve a broad framework of infrastructure development in Tier II and Tier III towns, they will run into problems before long. Planning and its implementation hold the key.

As already Madurai is having the HIGH-COURT Building , Establishing the TamilNadu Secretrait & holding the 6-months Assembly meeting in MADURAI will pave the way for INDUSTRIALIZATION and other Developmental activities in the South.....:)

It is to be noted that MADURAI is considered as the CAPITAL-CITY of Southern districts according to the Mediapersons and Merchants.

MADURAI: A bio-diesel plant will be set up in the city at a cost of Rs.25 lakh under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, according to Member Secretary S. Vincent.

He told The Hindu here on Saturday that the plant — the first of its kind in the State — would be established in association with the Madurai Kamaraj University and a non-governmental organisation.

Efforts would be taken to identify suitable agricultural land where Jatropha could be cultivated. Once the plant functioned successfully, similar ones would be set up in other districts also. In all probability, the bio-diesel plant would come up in three months.

Dr. Vincent said the council was trying to create a network of research scientists to help in its endeavour to provide scientific intervention to problems faced by the district administration. Hence, with the help of the Government, it had instituted awards for scientists and was in the process of collecting profiles of promising scientists.

The council was now evolving a new science and technology policy for the State Government and it would consult them in the exercise. The main thrust of the policy would be on creation of an application-oriented curriculum for students.

^^ Bus Bay means a dedicated space for the buses to be parked. I guess, there would have been incidents of traffic jams / accidents as buses were parked in the middle of the road, and Dinamalar would have demanded for a bus bay here, not sure though.

^^

You are right. That's what exactly happened. In fact, they should plan for more bus bays on this road which has enough space to do that. The service roads in this entire bypass is being wasted with shops and other vehicles parked in it.

The MDU-CBE highway is 2 lane except between MDU-Dindigul were 4 laning works are going on. Im not sure about the quality of the road now. Four laning works are going on in MDU-Dindigul(NH 7), MDU-Tuticorin(NH 45B), MDU-Virudhunagar(NH 7) and MDU-Trichy(NH 45B). NHAI will soon take up 4 laning of MDU-Rameswaram under NHDP IIIB. The only two NH's left out from 4 laning are Madurai-Theni and Tirumangalam-Rajapalayam.

Unfortunately there has been no update on the runway expansion in any of the print media for a long time. Anyone in Madurai please update us on the current status. I hope they complete it by this month as said before. Unless they complete it, it would be difficult to operate international flights. There were previously news that some international airline companies were interested in operating flights out of MDU after the completion of runway expansion works.

MDU-Dindigul and Madurai-Trichy are different projects. MDU-Trichy NH will be 4 laned via Melur and not Dindigul. MDU-Dindigul is part of the NSEW road project of the NHAI.

MDU-CBE is a NH with number 209 between Dindigul and CBE and number 7 between MDU and Dindigul. It would be great if MDU-CBE is 4 laned, then MDU will be linked to all major cities in TN with 4 lane roads.

It is not madurai-dindigul-trichy 4 laning. madurai-dindigul 4 laning is for connecting the bangalore (via dindigul). already salem-bangalore 4 laning road is 85 percentage finished.now work is going on salem-dindigul 4 laning work.if it is finished there is a 4 laning road connecting madurai-bangalore.already bangalore-mumbai 4 laning road is finished.when this work finished there is connection of madurai-mumbai (via bangalore) in 4 laning road.

As per the report in the above link, the Vilangudi-Palanganatham bypass road will be made a 6 lane road similar to Chennai Anna Salai. There will be lamp posts in the divider for this bypass. New bridges will be constructed to have a 6 laned road for the entire 5 Kms distance including the ROB.

With the Southern Railway having the plans to operate sub-urban Trains from Koodal nagar in Madurai - will it make more Sub-urban stations inside the city ? There are chances to make MADURAI CITY Jn , Tiruparankundram , Tirumangalam , & one between Tiruparankundram & Tirumangalam - one between Tirumangalam & Virudhunagar in MDU-Virudunagar Sub-Urban stretches !
In MDU - Dindigul - There are Sholavandhan , Samayanallur , Vadipatti , KODAI ROAD , AMBAATURAI etc But more stations can be made between VADIPATTI & Kodai Road stations.
SR can also think of operating sub-urban trains in MDU-Usilampatti & MDU-Manamadurai stretches. In former- there can be Palanganatham(new) , Nagamalai Pudukottai, Vadapalanji , MKU University,Shekkanoorani , Karumaathur & Usilampatti. New stations can be formed between Shekanoorani & usilampatti. In later , MDU CITY , ANUPPANADI(new) , PALAM-STATION ROAD , RING-ROAD , Tirupuvanam & more stations between Tirupuvanam &Manamadurai.
