Sorry if I have irritated you but I guess I know about Abu Dhabi having very deep pockets thanks to the fact that the club I support is funded by their deep pockets. It's on my signature. I have to say, Abu Dhabi sure did well to invest more prudently as compared to Dubai. They do huge projects that reflects the culture as well whereas Dubai just builds. That is my opinion, btw. :)

Dubai-based hotel management group Jumeirah will enter Abu Dhabi later this year with the opening of five-star hotel at Etihad Towers.

It will be the first hotel under management of Jumeirah Group in the UAE capital. The hotel will launch booking prior to its soft opening slated for September, a hotel reservation booking official told Emirates 24l7.

The overall quality and execution of this complex seems to be awesome, yeah. But the design is somewhat pale. 5 towers, with the same design, just with different heights, nah idk. I hope they will get TALL friends around, which will nest it, into a new AD cluster. :-) And yeah, i prefer AD over Dubai.

This complex looks as "inspiring" to me as the GM HQ in Detroit. This design is much more oriented around the spaces created rather than the purity of the geometry involved in the structures. Mr. Portman's design was almost exclusively conceived at the macro scale and came at a time when he was simply fascinated with circular buildings and lobbies that direct people away from interacting with the building's context.

Conversely this project shows a greater recognition of how to interact with the site, and creates layers of viewsheds and spaces inviting people to move into and out of the development much more freely. It also achieves a greater impact by simply being larger - The GM facility is so much more humble since the central tower isn't much taller than it's companions.

I truly like this design here. It's a graceful addition to the city and seems to have done well in accomplishing the desires of the developer.

The Etihad Towers are not finished but they already dominate the skyline in the Ras Al Akhdar district. Ravindranath K / The National

ABU DHABI // The five curvy, shimmering towers in a layered cluster reflect every shade of blue from the sea and sky on the west end of the Corniche.

The Etihad Towers are not finished but they already dominate in the Ras al Akhdar district.

Developed by the Sheikh Suroor Projects Department (SSPD) and designed by DBI Design, Australia's largest architecture and design company, the towers are expected to reinvent luxury in Abu Dhabi.

"Our job was to create buildings that can become reflective of a sophisticated and international city," says Lawrence Greenman, the senior project leader at DBI.

In 2006, DBI won a private competition for the project from six other companies. The competition called for a design for four towers by the waterfront at the end of the Corniche.

"The site of the towers is unique," says Barry Lee, a company and design director at DBI. "It is a major access point to the city and consequently deserved a symbolic, powerful design that could represent the change in Abu Dhabi."

After winning the lead contracts for architecture, interior design and landscape architecture, DBI went to work immediately, and as the project evolved, four towers became five.

"We focus on buildings that are environmentally, culturally and socially sustainable," Mr Lee says. "We explore ideas that aren't normally reflected in conventional buildings, most of which are quite aggressive or boxy with rational, straight lines and angles."

DBI wanted the Etihad Towers to symbolise the nature and culture surrounding them.

"We had a lot of inspiration to draw from in Abu Dhabi," says Mr Lee.

Using the capital's history as a port city, the designers came up with the idea of billowing sails when imagining the curves of the building.

Sketches of falcons and images of overlapping and unfurling flower petals provided the organic quality to how the buildings should be grouped.

"The buildings may not reflect these things directly, save for the obvious allusion to sails blowing in the wind, but we relied on these elements for the structural interpretation," Mr Greenman says.

"The buildings may not reflect these things directly, save for the obvious allusion to sails blowing in the wind, but we relied on these elements for the structural interpretation," Mr Greenman says.

The result is a very specific grouping of the towers, which ensures that from whichever direction they are viewed at least two are always visible.

The slightly reflective blue and silver glass used on the buildings bounces light in different directions. Depending on the time of day, some are highlighted while others are in shadow. It is all deliberate.

"The way the light bounces off the buildings make them shimmer and the light between the buildings interplays as well," says Mr Greenman. "It all helps make them look taller and more slender and more elegant.

"No matter where you look at the complex you don't have a large area of building pointed directly at you because of the reflection of the light and the curves making the buildings look narrower than they are."

The tallest of the towers, 300 metres and 75 floors, will be one of three residential buildings. Among the three there are 885 apartments, ranging from one to four bedrooms and offering penthouse units.

The other two towers will be offices, in the shortest of the five at 54 floors, and a hotel managed by Jumeirah Group, the hospitality subsidiary of Dubai Holding, which will be in the second-tallest tower.

Two of the towers sit in a space that will be landscaped by DBI, while the other three spring from a podium base, says Mr Lee.

"Within the podium there will be a state-of-the-art convention centre that can cater for groups of more than 2,200, and an 1,800 square metre ballroom that can accommodate 1,000 people for a set menu and about 1,400 people in conference mode," he says.

"There will be 12 food and beverage outlets and two independent restaurants as well, covering everything from Japanese to French to traditional Arabic cuisine."

The towers are planned to redefine luxury in a contemporary setting, including an internationally renowned spa and exclusive retail space.

But despite the exclusive feel, Mr Lee insists the towers will be a draw for everyone in the city.

"The key to the concept of this development is that it is a very welcoming place, intended to be a place of pride for the city," he says.

"Everyone can benefit from the space and feel welcome."

Love Etihad Towers, but don´t really like the others next to them... They are so awful... No design, no spirit... Just plot of towers to complete empty land... :(

My heart beats for Paris :bowtie:

And I don't think that last pic is a real photo ;) Theres no cranes around the bottom of the tower, plus the podium building is still unfinished I am pretty sure?

^^ You can clearly see that the podium isn't completed, and the guy might have just photoshoped the cranes out of the picture ... which IS a real picture (albeit photoshoped a little)

Where do these people get all this money! It truly amazing what is happening in Dubai in terms of architecture. It is like the dream city for innovators in the field of architecture and design. I never thought that they had such a great taste in the middle east, now I really want to go to Dubai

That is obviously a render there isn't even and building under construction in that photo beside the Etihad Towers and they don't even look close to real.

Well thee style is very much alike, I didn't know about this Abu Dhabi, AMAZING. These kind of buildings definitely add brand reputation (http://www.optimum7.com/internet-marketing/reputation-management/brand-reputation-management.html) not only to the builders but also to the owners.

These towers will definitely become a tourist attraction in their own right, the outside is a great view from many angles, including the sea.

The inside is breathtaking, do yourself a favour and do not look at any internal pictures before you go, and then be blown away when you get there!

Although in saying that, I don't think any pictures can convey the sheer scale of this building, especially the Jumeirah grand lobby.
