H.E. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan receiving a "golden falcon" gift from Sorouh Real Estate at the groundbreaking ceremony for Shams Abu Dhabi.

Shams Abu Dhabi, Sorouh's prestigious launch project, is located on Reem Island, 300 meters across from the northeastern shore of Abu Dhabi city. Top executives of the company, who were on hand to brief Abu Dhabi and Dubai-based journalists at a media tour of the island site, described Shams Abu Dhabi as the face of the new and emerging Abu Dhabi.

The Sky Tower, the world's 15th tallest building according to current ranking, is part of The Gate District of Shams Abu Dhabi. Apart from the Sky Tower, the Gate District will include seven breathtaking buildings that will offer a broad choice of commercial, residential and retail opportunities.

H.E. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Amiri Flights, was the special guest at the ceremony, held at a specially erected tent on the Shams Abu Dhabi site. On behalf of Sorouh's Chairman Saeed Al-Ghafli, Vice Chairman and Managing Director Faris Al Yabhouni addressed a gathering of Sheikhs, diplomats, investors, VIPs and the media. Sorouh CEO Mounir Haidar briefed the media and made a presentation about the most important and attractive features of Shams Abu Dhabi.

Al-Ghafli's address, read out by Al-Yabhouni, noted the important role being played by the UAE's real estate sector in the national economy. "It is well known that the vision and the wise policies adopted by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, and His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Commander of UAE Armed Forces have played a crucial role in the current real estate boom," he said.

"Sorouh Real Estate has become a major player in the real estate industry by conceiving and launching sizeable and significant projects in Abu Dhabi, such as Shams Abu Dhabi, which is poised to become a landmark development in UAE's real estate sector. The project comprises residential, commercial and retail amenities, hotels, gardens and parks, in addition to infrastructure facilities that are designed to offer maximum comfort and fulfillment for the residents. As you know, our corporate promise is "Life in Perfect Balance", and Shams Abu Dhabi is designed to deliver this promise," Al-Ghafli added.

Al-Ghafli also thanked H.E. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan for patronizing the groundbreaking ceremony for Shams Abu Dhabi, which is a major milestone for the company.

During the tour of the island, Al Yabhouni described Shams Abu Dhabi as a unique project that will play a major role in positioning Abu Dhabi among the most modern cities of the world. He said when completed, Shams Abu Dhabi, with its proximity to Abu Dhabi's mainland and its pleasing and imposing visual impact, will become the face of the capital city.

Al Yabhouni also added that the grandeur and scale of the Gate District at the entrance to Shams Abu Dhabi, combined with the beauty of the surrounding island environment, will make the city one of the most attractive for residents and visitors.

Al Yabhouni noted that the project embodies Sorouh's vision of 'building communities in perfect balance", offering residents a living and working environment that promotes an overall sense of well-being by providing for their physical, intellectual, spiritual and social needs.

Mounir Haidar, CEO of Sorouh, said that the Sky Tower, which is one of the eight buildings on the Gate District, will host 598 residential and commercial units. Recreational facilities including swimming pools, tennis courts, and sports and fitness centers, restaurants, coffee shops as well as a shopping mall, with all essential outlets, will also be a part of the development. "The Sky Tower offers a unique combination of facilities that will enable it to support all the essential needs of its occupants on site. This distinguishes it from other major projects in the region," he said.

Occupants of the Sky Tower will also have the luxury of an excellent panoramic view of the Arabian Sea on the one side and Abu Dhabi city on the other.

Haidar said Sorouh has appointed reputed and experienced international architecture consultants Architectonica & R.W. Armstrong as consultants for the Sky Tower.

Elaborating about the Sky Tower's special architectural features during a presentation, Haidar said the creative and unique building design will include energy-saving and other environmentally friendly features. The project efficiently and aesthetically combines the beauty of the surrounding environment and the needs of residential and commercial occupants. The commercial, residential and recreation facilities in the Sky Tower are designed in a contemporary style with a focus on luxury, he added.

The uppermost floors of the Sky Tower offer super-luxury duplex mansions with expansive vertical spaces. Below these are levels of luxury residences with three and four bedrooms, followed by suites with one, two and three bedrooms. The lower floors will provide commercial space and will provide the ultimate in A Class user-friendly working environments.

Sorouh Real Estate PJSC was established on 26th June 2005 with a capital of AED 2.5 billion with the objective of developing world-class properties in its home market of Abu Dhabi. It is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Market.

News (old, from february)

Sorouh celebrates AED 2.3 billion contract with ACC to build Sky Tower and sister tower

Sorouh, Abu Dhabi's leading real estate developer, yesterday celebrated handing over the Sky Tower and its sister tower construction site to major contractor Arabian Contracting Company (ACC).

The Sky Tower is part of the Gate District and will be built at Sorouh's flagship project, Shams Abu Dhabi on Reem Island.

Mounir Haidar, CEO of Sorouh said: 'ACC's portfolio of prestigious projects and its exceptional reputation in the market led to their selection from a shortlist of eight construction companies that had originally participated in the tender. We truly believe they will excel in meeting our expectations of quality, efficiency and on time delivery by adding value through the spirit of partnership approach between Sorouh and ACC'.

'While landmark developments are a common feature for ACC, we were impressed with their keenness to play an instrumental role in the creation of the capital's new skyline' Haidar continued.

Work on the Sky Tower and Tower 2, the 65 storey residential tower as well as the podium is well under way with work running to schedule.

The piling and excavation work, which was awarded to Al Habtoor-STFA Soil Group, consisting of 1080 main piles, the majority of the enabling works for the excavation is completed, allowing work on the basement to start on schedule. To date more than 96,000 man hours have been spent on the project and under the present progress the raft foundation will start within early part of March.

In addition to the construction of the Gate District, towers and podium, the infrastructure works at Shams Abu Dhabi continues with more than AED 500 million worth of contracted work - incorporating the dredging and reclamation, earthworks and sewers and marina and seawalls - underway.

Highlights include the resort site where 100,000m3 of sand was dredged in just four days. This was in addition to a total of 480,000m3 of dredged sand into reclaimed areas; production of 5754 pre cast concrete blocks for the construction of the Marina and Seawalls; shifting of 410,000 tons of rock and 450,000m3 of sand used to reclaim land.

In addition, 800 LM of rock revetment wall at the top of the Marina to allow land reclamation either side of the proposed marina has been completed - the reclamation in this area will require 1,300,000m3 of sand. Moreover work for the road embankments is currently underway; deep sewers network had been completed.

Scheduled for completion in 2009, the elliptical shaped Sky Tower is Sorouh's high-end offering in Shams Abu Dhabi, on Reem Island which is 300 meters across from the northeastern shore of Abu Dhabi city. The building will be housed in the Gate District, the majestic entrance to Shams, which has been projected by Sorouh as the face of the new Abu Dhabi. Sky Tower will offer luxury high-rise residences and a contemporary office environment with spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf and Abu Dhabi.

so as i understand, this tower is 379m to pinnacle? and maybe 350m to roof?
even that means the 83 floors are 4.2m high each.
i dont think its 379m to roof and over 400m to pinnacle?
that means ssp should fix there diagram because they have it as 379m to roof.

Sun Tower reaches 58 floors

Posted on Monday, 24 November 2008

Press Release Content

Sorouh Real Estate PJSC, one of Abu Dhabi’s leading real estate developers, today announced significant progress towards the completion of SHAMS Abu Dhabi, a landmark development on Reem Island.

Construction on Sun Tower, the 64-storey residential skyscraper, has now reached the 58th floor on the lift core and will shortly reach the same milestone with the floors.

Its sister, Sky Tower, has reached level 52 on the lift core, and now stands an impressive 45 out of 74 floors tall. The rapid rate of construction means that another floor is added to the towers every 6 to 10 days.

The remarkable progress on Sun and Sky Towers is the product of more than 11,750,000 man-hours since work began on the site in late 2006.

Commenting on progress, Sorouh’s Chief Operations’ Officer, Mr Samer Abu-Hijleh, said: “Looking out from Abu Dhabi across to Reem Island, you can already see these iconic structures taking shape. Construction on SHAMS Abu Dhabi is on track and the speed with which it is making progress underlines Sorouh’s commitment to looking ahead and completing its developments on deadline. “We look forward to the first homeowners moving into Sorouh-designed and built homes on Reem Island in early 2010.”

Construction has also progressed on the enabling works of The Gate Towers: the perimeter wall of the basement, known as the diaphragm wall, is now well under way allowing excavation work to begin in earnest. Some 41,000 cubic meters of soil have been removed from what will be the footprint of the podium, which will eventually house The Gate Towers’ state-of-the-art leisure and retail facilities.

The Gate Towers, part of The Gate District along with the Sun and Sky Towers, comprise six iconic structures including an 800 room international hotel, residential towers with well-appointed accommodation ranging from luxurious penthouses to one, two and three bedroom flats and Commercial Towers that offer businesses the opportunity to share this landmark location.

Sky Tower groundbreaking launches construction of Sorouh's Shams Abu Dhabi
July 2006

Sorouh Real Estate today began construction work at the site of its flagship project, Shams Abu Dhabi, with a groundbreaking ceremony for its 83-storey, 379-meter high Sky Tower which will be the tallest building in Abu Dhabi.

http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/7/28037-sorouh.jpg

Al though i stay very near to it, im unable to get up and close to take the pictures because of the traffic cheos at Al Salam street ( presently going under a drastic redevelopement). TOPPED OUT – SKY AND SUN TOWERS REACH THEIR PEAK

The landmark Sky and Sun Towers, marking the entrance of SHAMS Abu Dhabi, have been 'topped out', meaning that the structures have been completed on both buildings.

Both buildings are now at their full height, with the Sky Tower registering 74 stories and Sun Tower at 65 stories. The buildings are officially the tallest structures in Abu Dhabi today and act as a visual reference point and gateway to SHAMS Abu Dhabi.

Progress on the development continues apace with the majority of the installation work on both the curtain (ie exterior) walls and Sky Pods both completed.

The ground floor slab, Mezzanine level and Level 1 and 2 of the Podium (which will be home to retail, leisure and business facilities) have now been finalised. Levels 3 and 4 are now 90% and 76% complete respectively. Overall construction work on the Podium is now 82% complete and on track to be finished in August.

The internal fit-out of both buildings is also well underway, with meticulous detail being paid to the finishing of the interior partitioning, floor, ceiling and mechanical engineering, meeting the highest standards that Sorouh customers have come to expect.

Sky and Sun Towers are just a small part, and the first phase of a larger master-plan called Al Reem Island. In just over a decades time Sky tower will be close to the heart of Abu Dhabi's new CBD.

Some info on the master-plan:
"Al Reem Island development is a $30 billion master-planned mixed-use community. The development sits on a natural island just 600 meters of the cost of Abu Dhabi main island. Spread across 6.5 million square meters the island is being built by three developers; Sorouh, Reem Investments, and Tamouh. This 'mega development' is one of the largest under construction in Abu Dhabi and will include a business district, a commercial district and a residential district, transforming the island into a 'city within a city'. Some of the facilities that will be on the island will include; seven schools, shopping malls, art galleries, parks, and four hospitals. The island is expected to have a population of over 200,000 when complete in 2018 (more like 2020 now)."

Here's a render of the Sorouh district. Only about 25% of the master-plan and can be seen at the bottom of the aerial picture above.

Why does Abu Dhabi need such infrastructure. Its population is only about 800,000. Is it pursuing a "if we build it, they will come" kind of boom or a "let's hope people want to move here" strategy? Just curious.

The oil isn't going to last forever. They're trying to be proactive in developing new avenues of investment and growth for their countries. Better to be "progressive" than "regressive" like some of the other Arab countries.

The negative aspect of the developments is that is does seem to give off a "Fake" appearance to the cities. Their not natural evolvments like NY, Hong Kong, Chicago, etc.

I've wondered the same thing. The entire country has a population of only about four million and Dubai isn't much bigger than Abu Dhabi at about 1.4 million which is smaller than where I live in Nashville. I've often wondered if these buildings that are completed are really filled with residents, office workers or hotel guests. I do understand that they want to prepare for the future and become a major economic center which sounds reasonable but the amount of office space is so massive I don't quite understand how such a small nation could fill up all of those buildings. I'd be curious what others who know more than I do about the situation might think about it.

Well for starters the population of the UAE is at 6 million + according to latest studies Montana !

and nashville does not have more than 1.4 million :D The 2008 population of the Nashville-Davidson—Murfreesboro—Columbia combined statistical area was estimated at 1,632,671 ...... so basically if you combine Dubai and sharjah and ajman you get a much higher number

but for the rest of the argument .... i think you guys are failing to realize the UAE is an upcoming power house in the area , we need all the office space we cant get , let alone residential towers and homes.

^^ Exactly, I'm not entirely bashing cities like Dubai, these areas of the world need new towers and infrastructure to grow and attract new investment. The oil and natural gas won't last forever. What's occuring in Abu Dhabi is no different than the changes that occured in American cities. Many US cities were once major industrial and manufactoring centers, now they're gearing themselves towards services, health care, and technology.

The only thing I dislike is the "artificial" layout of places like Dubai. The Palm Tree islands, the World, the Dubai Marina supertall block... very cool looking, but not entirely practical, economic, or containing any real thought into logical city planning.

Shams Abu Dhabi, the Dhs25bn master development on the investment-zoned Al Reem Island, will comprise 5.2 million square meters of built up area adjacent to the new Central Business District on Al Sowwah Island. Sorouh is the master developer of Shams Abu Dhabi and is responsible for developing the Sun and Sky Towers and Shams Gate on Shams Abu Dhabi.

Once complete, Shams Abu Dhabi will be home to 53,000 people who will enjoy a quality urban lifestyle. The development offers attractive features such as canals, marinas and parks, all incorporating world-class master-planning practices.

Good progress continues to be made at Shams Gate. The Sun and Sky Towers are nearing handover and the first residents are due to start moving in as soon as June or July. Infrastructure being developed on the surrounding land remains on track and will be completed in time for the handover.

I am pretty sure its temporary. They are desperately trying to sell the apartments for these towers. But not many people want to live in the middle of a 650 hectare construction site. I wouldn't mind though.. ;)

Here's a new render of what the entire development will look like when complete. Can you spot Sky Tower?

Reem Island will be done in 7 phases and fully complete between 2020-2023. It being built between three of Abu Dhabi's largest developers. Many of the buildings are not stupidly size and unrealistic. They will be serving a purpose to expand AD's existing overcrowded and dated CBD. And while Dubai has a massive oversupply of properties, AD has an under supply of about 20,000+ units. With a population growing about 5% a year. This project will happen, I guarantee you that.

Besides Abu Dhabi's pockets are too deep to go bankrupt. ;)

I agree, Abu Dahabi is something like a reasonable Dubai. They build their city as a sculptor would whereas Dubai is just sheer force. Be that as it may, I really enjoy watching both citys develop.
