Kuwait unveils digital cinema

Kuwait’s largest cinema chain, Kuwait National Cinema Co (KNCC) has invested in the region’s first digital cinema.

Described as a pilot project, the installation was undertaken by Real IUmage Media Technology, an Indian company, included the supply of a Qube HD XP-D DCI compliant digital cinema server, along with a Cinemeccanica 2K projector. The new kit is being showcased at the Shaab cinema in Kuwait.

KNCC trades in Kuwait under the Cinescape brand, and says the project has cost some $150,000, attributing the higher-than-normal price to having started from scratch. - (c) Rapid TV News 2007

What's a digital cinema??????

I think a digital cinema would eliminate the need for cue marks (the small dots found on cinema screens), due to the digitization of reels.

Digital cinema refers to the use of digital technology to distribute and project motion pictures. The final movie can be distributed via hard drives, DVDs or satellite and projected using a digital projector instead of a conventional film projector. Digital cinema is distinct from high-definition television and in particular, is not dependent on using television or HDTV standards, aspect ratios, or frame rates. Digital projectors capable of 2K resolution began deploying in 2005, and in 2006, the pace has accelerated. HDTV and pre-recorded HD disks will put great pressure on movie theaters to offer something better to compete with the improved home HD experience.
