View Full Version : my new tower, 72 storeys, 280 m
dc00 August 29th, 2007, 02:22 PM Hi everybody. Long time since my last post.
OK,here's my latest work. I was playing with SU and finding different ways to make a building more interesting. And here's the result.
It is a 72-storey building (280 m). It could be a mixed-use building or some office building.
It doesen't have a spire and a base of the building is very simple (i didn't have much time to finish it).
Hope you like it. Comments are very welcome.

philvia August 29th, 2007, 02:50 PM looks very nice and elegant ;) i dont see hoowwww you made this in sketchup tho because when i try to add detail to a curved building i just loose my patience and close it out :p
Jude12 August 29th, 2007, 03:54 PM this is sketchup? wow!.
Frankfurter_Bockwurst August 29th, 2007, 05:05 PM this is renderd....
and it looks like a parking lot xD
nice
AcesHigh August 29th, 2007, 06:36 PM it looks AWESOME!! But exactly because of that, I demand more renders!! And close ups. It seems you modelled the inside of the building as well! Show us!
AcesHigh August 29th, 2007, 06:39 PM btw, very nice palm tree models. Those are not the SU originals, are they?
dc00 August 29th, 2007, 10:22 PM Thank you for your comments.
philvia, i have to say i didn't know this shape is possible in SU,but now i see it is possible. All i can say right now i made this with tool where you can intersect one shape with another. I will post a quick tutorial if you want.
Jude12, yes, this is SU :) ....a lot of interesting shapes could be done in SU.
AcesHigh, i'll try to post more renders. No,i didn't made nothing special to interior. And no,those palm trees are a part of a rendering software i use.
florr0 August 29th, 2007, 10:44 PM wow, this is awesome
pingyao August 29th, 2007, 11:38 PM One of the most elegant and beautiful designs I've seen on this forum. Good work!

Jude12 August 30th, 2007, 11:59 AM what renderer did you use?
dc00 August 30th, 2007, 06:20 PM Thank you all again for your comments.
Jude12, i use Vue 5 Infinite from e-on software.
OK,here's my tutorial. I hope this will help you in some way. If you have any answers, please ask.
1. Make 2 circles (or some other shapes)
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/5244/a1qp2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
2. Select second circle
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/8599/a2zn0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
3. Move it away from first the one
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/838/a3fg3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
4. Make floors with first circle (there's many ways to do that)
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/2619/a4bv4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
5. I usually do this to make outside glasses (you can do in your way), because it's easier
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1668/a5pw5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
6. Move up
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6313/a6yu2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
7. Pull second circle to the top (align it with first circle)
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5784/a7gx8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
8. Make a rectangle
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/6928/a8de0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
9. Pull it to the top
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1166/a9qb1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
10. Now, use your imagination and make some curves
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/8046/a10bb6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
11. Click 3 times on that shape, right click on it and select »MAKE GROUP«
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/8312/a11lz0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
12. Now, use a right click again and select »EDIT GROUP« and pull it to the inside of the circle. Then, use right click again and select »INTERSECT WITH MODEL«. (wait a little bit). Click on that shape again and select Delate
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/9292/a12ct3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
13. You can see the shape on the circle
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1528/a13bl7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
14. Select inner shape and delate it (make this 2 times...outside and inside)
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2925/a14sx9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
15. Click 3 times and move it to the original position from the start
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/5462/a15hz1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
16. Align
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1791/a16tm3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
17. Use different glasses or materials to make a building more interesting
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/494/a17xf6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
18. My finish

AcesHigh August 30th, 2007, 07:14 PM ^looks like the easiest part because the tutorial involves a simple tube shaped building.
you real project on the other hand, has a building with a much more complex shape (smaller on the bottom, than larger in the middle than gets thinner on top again... some pretty curves).
SixU August 30th, 2007, 07:17 PM The first tower is so beautiful and organic looking! Nicely done!
Frankfurter_Bockwurst August 30th, 2007, 08:28 PM Parking lot?! Wha....who........whAT!!!
BTW....Amazing design and rendering, dunno how u did it in SU!
yeah we in germany have some parking lots with about 5 stores
MasonicStage™ August 30th, 2007, 08:53 PM Fantastic! :applause:
Quall August 30th, 2007, 08:56 PM Excellent design! :okay:
AcesHigh August 30th, 2007, 10:49 PM does this VUE 5 imports SU objects, or must you first export from SU to 3DS then import with Vue 5? How easy is to use VUE5? Whats the website for it? I want to see a galery.
malec August 30th, 2007, 10:54 PM ^looks like the easiest part because the tutorial involves a simple tube shaped building.
you real project on the other hand, has a building with a much more complex shape (smaller on the bottom, than larger in the middle than gets thinner on top again... some pretty curves).
One way is to take each floorplate and scale it accordingly
soup or man August 31st, 2007, 04:10 AM How does one do that?
dc00 August 31st, 2007, 09:01 AM AcesHigh, yes, this was just a tutorial and it's different than my first building, wich is more complex. But you can always make such a shape of the building.
There's 2 ways to do that, first one is like malec already said and second one is to make a 2d shape and use a "follow me" tool. I'll try to post another tutorial.
AcesHigh, you can export objects directly to Vue (i use .obj file). Website of that software is www.e-onsoftware.com
Jude12 August 31st, 2007, 11:32 AM is VUE 5 free?. if it is where can i get it? :D

Skyhi71 September 2nd, 2007, 10:25 PM DC you're an inspiration. I followed your tutorial and it worked just as you described, just like the other tutorial you posted before. This is amazing! Just when I thought SketchUp couldn't get what I had in my head on the screen too.
I am curious though, how you do the different floor size thing, I read what Malec posted and can see how that would work, but I'm curious how you do it. Also your way of making windows made the way I was doing it look so very hard lol.
Also, you mentioned there's lots of ways to make floors? I only know of one way, which is making the floor, making it a component and then copying up as needed. Is there a better/faster way? Making 100 floors like that can be uh, boring.
Anyway, thanks again for the tutorial and the inspiration! Maybe one day I can post something I've made here =) Still learning though.
dc00 September 3rd, 2007, 08:06 PM Jude 12, Vue 5 ( now Vue 6) is not free software, but i think there's a trial version. You can get it on their website.
Skyhi71, i'm glad my tutorial makes your work with SU little easier.
You asked me if there's is some easier way to make floor in »quick« way. Well, there is.
You do everythink like you told me »copy floors«....after that, just tipe the number of floors ( there's a window marked with red on the pic where you can see what you tipe) and tipe x press enter and that's it (beware not to click onto nothing with your mouse before you press enter).....Look the pics bellow.

Skyhi71 September 3rd, 2007, 08:54 PM Oh my god. I can't believe that was so easy. All this time I've been doing it one by one. :runaway:
Thank you very much!
soup or man September 4th, 2007, 06:08 AM Hey DC..how do you change the size of your floors? Like how do you make the floor size smaller the higher the building is?
Frankfurter_Bockwurst September 4th, 2007, 08:12 AM i think you have to do this on your own (resize it with resize tool)
anyway...the tu up there isnt the easyest
piolo September 4th, 2007, 07:59 PM Your project is so sexy
Jude12 September 8th, 2007, 04:12 AM i tried to do the easy way to copy the floor but it always says invalid length.
FlyingDutchman September 8th, 2007, 09:58 AM i tried to do the easy way to copy the floor but it always says invalid length.
Go to windows -> preference, see it it's on your metric (metres or feet)
LeMoN-SK October 30th, 2007, 11:28 AM The firs tower is just awesome!:okay:
germantower October 30th, 2007, 01:38 PM is this easy floor adding way available on the free SU 6 version. Ive got the german one.
btw i tried it and it didnt work.
Jude12 October 31st, 2007, 04:19 AM ^^ me too it didnt work
Skyhi71 October 31st, 2007, 10:10 AM Not sure why it wouldn't work. Go back and read DC's tutorial on the floor adding over again and make sure you follow it step by step.
One thing that hung me up for a few minutes was that you must make a copy first before you can multiply it.
Meaning, make the first floor, then use copy to make the second floor and position it as high as you need, and then you can do "25x" and all the floors will appear.
germantower October 31st, 2007, 11:07 AM but what i have to press to be able to enter 25x?
Gijs (Amsterdam) November 1st, 2007, 10:27 PM Nothing! Just typ 25x and it happens :D
dc00 November 1st, 2007, 10:52 PM germantower, like Gijs (Amsterdam) said, after you pull your section or a whole floor up, just type number of floors and after that x and then press enter As i said once before, be sure not to click onto anything before you click enter, because if you do that, it wont work.
Jude12 November 2nd, 2007, 04:09 AM ok i got the floor thing. thanks. :D
germantower November 3rd, 2007, 04:53 AM i still not.will try it later.
skyscraper100 December 20th, 2007, 11:14 AM 19. That's it :)
