Concrete pouring for the shopping mall slab has finally started!

I also noticed that they placed something on the ramp which I honestly can't identify. Btw seems that they are keeping the ramp for some material supply for the basement or are there any signs that they gonna remove the ramp soon?

^^ They may not remove it, it could be used as a ramp for parking if there will be any under the mall or even the main tower...

This building has a relatively high "aspect ratio" ( tall and narrow!)? And are the stones on the exterior "real" (to reduce deflections)?

I'm curious, which stones are toy talking about? I don't see any in the pictures. :?

Maybe but I really don't think so. The ramp as it is now takes a lot of space and it may be done a lot more efficiently in the future.

The entire Pearl River Delta has aproximately 120 million people, but it's not a single contiguous metropolis. That figure includes the populations of Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Macau, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Zhaoqing, and any smaller surrounding communities.

He was wrong about Shenzen being the biggest city in the world though, as Tokyo easily holds the top spot by any measurement or classification.

Many chinese cities have green areas nearby. Hong kongs area is for the majority nature as wel.

120 million population for the pearl delta area?! it is even larger than the number of the whole Cantonese living area(including Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao)

Eastern37

If you are comparing this to the Shanghai Tower, this building is a lot smaller and wouldn't need the extra two cranes... :)

A lot smaller? I would say they are quite equal in size of the footprint. And it still may get more cranes in the future. Shanghai tower on the begging of the construction also have just two cranes, and only later when core started to rise they added two additional.

i think ping-an is a lot slimmer, looking at the diagrams at SSP it is visible that not only the top is slimmer because of the spire, but also the whole body of the building isn't as wide as Shanghai Tower

patrykus
March 12th, 2012, 04:53 PM
^^ Not really. The thing that makes st slightly wider is it's double cladding. When you remove the exterior cladding both towers looks pretty much equal. Plus, the st has round footprint while pingan is square. That means there will be at least the same amount of construction materials to be lifted for each floor at ping'an construction or maybe even more.

IMO ;)

i haven't thought about that too much yet. But it could be true what you are saying. The only thing i can think of is that Shanghai Towers core has a lot of elevators in it and may therefor be wider than needed, which may be different for Ping-an, other than that no idea.

Hi all.

I see this in many construction threads - "What is taking so long ?" - "what is the hold up ?" ...........

I say "What is the hurry ?"
The construction phase in the life cycle of a building is the most exciting part. Enjoy the ride.

The planning phase is also exciting but we don't hear about much of that as it's happening. The operation and maintenance phase is by far the longest but is normally fairly mundane.

Some foundation rafts sit for 6 months for various reasons.
Be Patient and again ... Enjoy the ride. :)

Interesting. Is this actual information or just your guessing?

Generally, I agree. I think they will start soon. It's not like they were laying on their back doing nothing for the last month. They did finish the concrete slab, cleared the side and now I guess they are ready to move on. Maybe it was more convenient to first complete the slab before continuing with the tower.

Who changed the status to "on hold"?
There is nothing showing that it is on hold, every day there are some new things! They've just finished pouring the concrete for the raft of the mall! They are building accomodation buildings on the other side of the road, they seem like mounting new cranes, and all material is ready to receive the steel structure!
The just finished redoing the north entrance to accommodate huge trucs with heavy loads!

patrykus
March 19th, 2012, 12:45 PM
Thats right

1. They wouldn't install tower cranes if they were planning to put it on hold.
2. There is always activity on site, and the mall is integral part of the project so you can't just separate it from the tower.
3. There's lots of construction materials on site.

I think I know who did it. Our bellowed overexcited mod

Anyways my suggestion is this. Lets wait one month from the last activity on site. If there will be no action anywhere on the side then we can call it on hold. But until now the site was pretty busy, and just lately they finished all the works with the slab so very soon they either start works with the main tower or we put it on hold, but now is definitely to early since just week ago this was still a busy construction site.

Hi all.

On Hold is when the developer temporarily halts construction for whatever reason. Waiting for the raft to gain enough strength before beginning to erect core walls is not on hold.

Some projects wait 6 months after pouring the raft and they are certainly not on hold. Besides, there has been activity at the site.

Wikipedia is definitely not the place to go for pertinate information IMO.

It really just depends on where you are. Luo Hu district, the oldest part, is a bit more rundown and a lot dirtier. But many parts of Nanshan and Futian are much less dense and extremely well maintained. I particularly like the drive in Futian down Shen Nan Da Dao lined up skyscrapers on both sides and passing by the lush green of the Shenzhen civic center or whatever it's called in English. The drive down Bin Hai Da Dao from Futian to Nanshan is a little less interesting architecturally, but also really nice.

April 11th, 2012, 04:54 PM
I agree, most of the city is not dense and the city is is relatively small so it is easy to escape from. There are many huge parks (highest number of parks in any chinese city) and small mountains, as well as the bay. The city is much smaller than most cities with equal population sizes but because it consists mostly out of high-rises it feels more spacious.

it is less dense than you thought i am afraid.
the roads in that area are all massive, with at least six lanes, some with a lane or two lanes' width in the middle of the road for trees.. and the pedestrian walks on a whole lane width ground as well.. so the roads normally have a width of 12m minimum.

I tentatively agree with Charles54 that this is a ceremony commemorating the completion of this phase of the construction. Alternatively, it could just be a ceremony commemorating someone that has done a good job on the first phase of the project.

You mean revising up from 660m? I'm only asking this because there was some controversy whether this hight is true or not. And if they want to make it even taller I just hope it will include the whole building not just the spire because it's already ridiculously tall after last height increase.

Thats weird, it doesn't resize my pics. I take pics in CE3 at 2500x1600, then upload them, and it keeps them the same size and quality.

It may depend on what quality setting you are using in your pictures. I save them with my graphic editor and after uploading the image is usually reduced in size even if not going over the 2MB limit. Sometimes by much but sometimes just by a little bit. The problem is that quality is also affected. I emailed Imgur asking about that and got a reply that they are using 'loseless' image processing which 'does not' reduce quality but only eliminates unnecessary data. Then I replied them showing two images one of which was processed by Imgur with a noticeable loss in quality. I didn't get a reply which was the reason I stopped using it.

Huh, thats interesting, aren't there some other sites you could try like Image shack. By the way, when I said CE3, I am talking about Cryengine 3, the engine used for Crysis 2

There's min.us if you want free lossless image hosting. It's a lot slower though, so I only use it for huge pictures that I don't want resized. Imgur is the best even with the barely noticeable compression imo, easy to use, fast, and convenient

The only difference I can see from the last set of pics is a bit more steel in the bottom of the hole, and the huge storage bin on the far side of the crane has been filled up some more with materials.
