So it seems the total height would be "only" 588 meters! Do you think this is without taking into account the spire ?

Hope you'll find your answer here:

In fact the link worked but from the notification email I received in my mailbox. It was not working on the website.
Thanks for the link! It makes complete sense! So it will really be the biggest in China :) and it's still 5 minutes far from my apartment :colgate:

588meters is the roof of the building excluding the spire, the final height is uncertain due to some reasons. It will not be the biggest building in China in terms of total floor space, but it will probably be the tallest.

why not? shenzhen is the richest large city in china on a per capita basis.
Isn't Hong Kong the richest? :dunno:

Isn't Hong Kong the richest? :dunno:

Hong Kong's status as part of China is still sketchy considering from the time of handover it was granted "50 years of relative autonomy."

So if we're counting Hong Kong then it is the richest city per capita in China ~40k usd/year.

If not though, Shenzhen takes the prize. ~20k usd/year.

I haven't looked into it but I am inclined to believe that in terms of PPP Shenzhen beats Hong Kong. Any answers to this would be much appreciated.

In 2007, Shenzhen's GDP per capita was US$10,628, making it the richest of all Chinese cities.

1. Hong Kong US$41,614 (2007)
2. Macau US$28,853 (2007)

I doubt in terms of PPP is much difference, because all cities have high standard of living. (the big diference betwen China's GDP and PPP is made in the rural and not so developed areas, where 100$ is like 1000$ in USA)

velut arbor aevo

people these days only use RPPP, APPP is not an accurate measure of wealth, it ignores too many factors and assumes we live in a world with no market friction, and that people's preferences and lifestyles are exactly the same, which is definitely not.

The center-to-center distance is 29km but along the coast avoiding the mountains there is an almost continuous strip of built-up land already, at some places very narrow, at other places including complete (new) towns.

in fact most well-known state-owned companies have got their nice places already, like BoC, China National Petroleum, ICBC etc. However, some are still not satisfied and still want to have a nicer one like CCTV...
but there are still many Private enterprises like Pingan, they are evolving quickly, and surly there will be a supertall race in the next decade among those large cities

Sandals = easy to clean.

Have u seen the window washers in shanghai? they got whole carts on metal cables on SWFC. Maybe other buildings its different but a plank and rope is a lil exaggerated.

I agree, that was first really iconic design with class for China. Now it becomes as common as all of recent China proposals. Maybe they made him to make changes to the original design becouse of some practical reasons? (aerodynamics? energy efficients?). Who knows, but they went backward in terms of design.

(see the 2 latest paragraphs, does it give us hints about PingAn Intl Finance Centre?)

Ping An gets nod for its plan to sell new shares

PING An Insurance (Group) Co. of China Ltd. said Friday its shareholders approved the possible issue of new shares to Newbridge Capital Inc., the Asian arm of U.S.-based private-equity firm TPG Inc., in exchange for its stake in Shenzhen Development Bank Co.

Ping An agreed in June to acquire TPG’s 16.76 percent stake in the bank by the end of 2010, as part of the insurer’s plan to raise its stake in the Shenzhen-based lender to up to 30 percent from 5 percent.

Ping An said it would pay TPG either 11.45 billion yuan (US$1.68 billion) in cash or 299.1 million new Ping An shares, about 4.1 percent of its existing share capital.

The Shenzhen-based insurer said earlier it hadn’t yet decided how to pay TPG. It sought shareholder approval for the share issue in the event it chooses that option.

Ping An will reach its targeted holding in Shenzhen Development Bank by buying 585 million new shares to be issued by the lender at 18.26 yuan a share.

In another development, Ping An’s trust unit plans to invest 10 billion yuan between 2009 and 2011 in real estate projects to be developed by Gemdale Corp.

Ping An said in a statement Friday its trust unit will invest about 3 billion yuan in such projects this year. It didn’t specify the projects or their shareholding structure. It said the investments will help Ping An capture growth in the domestic property market. (SD-Agencies)

This is officially not a parking any more and they are now leveling the construction site, I am guessing to prepare to ground breaking ceremony.
It would make sense as the latest news we got regarding this was that they would organize this on the 1st of september!
So now, if someone has more information regarding the final design, feel free to let us know!
I am really happy to be the one breaking the news!

How can I have missed this article? :)
I went to singapore last thursday until sunday and normally I'm reading the complete ShenzhenDaily every day to check if there are any news on PingAn building. And today, back from Singapore, I googled PingAn Building and found this Shenzhen Daily article :)

ShenzhenDaily : Aug. 21st:

Work on city’s tallest building begins
CONSTRUCTION on Shenzhen’s tallest building has begun on a vacant lot in Futian’s central business district (CBD), the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Thursday.

The building, which will house the headquarters of Shenzhen-based financial conglomerate Ping An Insurance (Group) Co., will cost an estimated 10 billion yuan (US$1.46 billion) to 15 billion yuan, the report said.

Excavators have started to work day and night on the 18,931-square-meter lot opposite the Coco Park shopping mall, which had previously been used as a temporary parking lot.

Ping An, which acquired the land for 1.66 billion yuan in November 2007, will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony later, according to Sheng Rui-sheng, spokesman for the company. Sheng declined to disclose the specific date. The skyscraper is reportedly scheduled to be completed at the end of 2014.

Ping An, China’s second-largest life insurer, will use its own cash to fund the skyscraper instead of obtaining a bank loan, Sheng said.

Sheng didn’t disclose the height of the building. Previous media reports said Ping An planned to build a 646-meter, 115-floor office tower, which will supersede the 492-meter Shanghai World Financial Center as the tallest building on the mainland. It could be taller than the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, which is also slated for completion in 2014.

But Ping An denied such reports in February, saying it had no intention of building China’s tallest skyscraper. Regardless, the office tower will become the tallest in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is developing the Futian CBD into a financial center, dubbing it Shenzhen’s Wall Street, according to a government plan.

Since Ping An bought rights to the land in the Futian CBD in November 2007, 13 other well-known companies, including CITIC Bank, Guosen Securities and China Merchants Securities, have acquired land to build their office buildings in the area.

In addition, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange will be relocated to the CBD from the existing location in Luohu District. By the end of 2007, 92 of the top 500 global companies had set up offices in the area. (Liu Minxia)

the diagram is simply an image pulled off the net and plastered on that chart with Diwang next to it for scale. and i can't read all of the article, so the info i can offer is limited until my mandarin improves. at the least it seems like it'd be relatively simple to add the spire during construction

Today's Shenzhen Daily:

In my opinion it will still b 646 meters. The 588 meters is the total height of the building without the spire. It is the size you can see on this early diagram posted by z0rg on January 10th.
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg64/z0rgggg/others/109572_1231834626.jpg

And we know that PingAn doesn't want to look like racing for the tallest building in China, and don't want to be taken for too proud of themselves, so they're saying it's 588 meters high.

By the way I have always believed the true height of a building should never include the spire.

Spire is cheating. That is so pretentious to make a 588m building and to add a ridiculous 58 meters spire on top, only to beat Shanghai.
It's like kids on a beach competing to make the biggest castle.

Anyways I'm almost sure that they'll end up putting the spire on top of it...
What I like on Hong Kong building's like 2 IFC and ICC, it's that they don't have a spire, they're just big, and not due to a thin spire.

Planner, I agree with you about the Foster design vis-a-vis the current one. But, like you say, hopefully the details will make it stand out. One of my major issues with the entire Futian CBD development is that it is scaled for the car. While it looks impressive from a distance, the streets are dead (for a Chinese city) for pedestrians. It lacks the vitality that is common in downtown Luohu or other parts of SZ

This is normal. Many of the buildings are still not completed, all offices spaces are still not rented out. But Shenzhen is like SimCity, you'll get more and more pedestrian in the street in the future. I remember CocoPark being dead, I remember the empty bar street, now it's crowded almost every day of the week. This was the same for Citic Plaza, there were nobody at the beginning and after 1 year it became a crowded place.
They build so fast here that people don't have the time to get used to it and to make those places their places.
And I can't agree with the fact that Futian CBD is not done for pedestrian, pretty soon you'll be able to go from the exhibition center (south) to LianHuaShan (north) by walking in a nice environment. Passing by, the new Central walk, the old central walk, the futian park, the Civic Center, the library and the concert hall and then LianHua Shan, probably all this without having to cross any pedestrian crossing.

bamz..

Planner Shenzhen
September 10th, 2009, 05:35 AM
Although I do not mean to further sidetrack the thread, I agree with some of the points about the cbd being auto-oriented, but also agree with it being comparatively pedestrian oriented.

In its 420 or so hectares, there is the exhibition center and five malls (2 Coco Parks, Book City, Central Walk and the mall (still under construction) between Central Walk and the exhibition center. All of those were not proposed by private developers, but were planned by the city. So life is sucked out of the street and into buildings. But, to the city's credit, all the malls do have some activities and retail that face out onto the street. And the original plans were for teh Coco Parks to be more garden-like.
Block sizes are larger than I would like, but they are smaller than most new places in Shenzhen. Plus, the blocks themselves are fairly permeable, without the fences and wallls that separate adjacent buildings/developments in other areas of Shenzhen.
I would like to see more buildings built to the property line and with retail at ground level, but, again it is better than most parts of Shenzhen. The urban design plan by SOM for the blocks between Coco Park and Shennan Avenue did just that, and with arcaded buildings. It is just too bad that the building management for all those buildings is not to international standards, making them B-grade office buildings. Even then, some crucial aspects of SOM's plan were deleted or ignored--such as having two residential buildings there, which would have given that area a more 24-hour feel.
Some of the residential developments are too large and are just large stretches of walls/fences along the sidewalk---boorrring for the pedestrian and scaled for the automobile. Huangpu Huayuan is the most egregious, but the cbd is much better than areas in NW Futian and outside the SEZ. Xinghe Guoji (Galaxy), across the street from Coco Park is an example of good residential development--street level retail with a garden for residents atop the podium base.
I live in fear of transport department throwing up fences in the middle of the roads in the cbd. It's nice they want to reduce pedestrian/auto conflicts, but it is always done at the expense of the automobile.
The turning radii at street intersections is still too large, so cars can turn the corner at high speeds , which makes it dangerous for pedestrians, which then makes a need for fences down the middle of the street, which forces people into cars and so on. BUT, again it is better than most parts of Shenzhen which have even larger turning radii with islands so cars turning right don't even need to stop at red lights.
Parking is rarely enforced, which degrades the pedestrian experience and also subsidizes auto usage. A citywide (nationwide) problem.

But there is good density for vibrancy and a good mix of uses and better than most parts of Shenzhen, which is why I live there. And it is unbeatable as far as public transport connections, especially when the underground high speed rail station is built. Once some of the shade trees mature, the pedestrian experience will be better too.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/th.14000187b4.jpg (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?14000187b4.jpg)
Original designs for the 'Shopping Park', the less successful one developed by Chengjian Jituan adheres closely to the design, while thedevelopers of Coco Park (Galaxy) went out and redisgned it using specialists in retail design.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/0eeda87432.png (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/)
SOM's urban design for 'Blocks 22, 23' shows how they split up two large blocks into 16 smaller scaled ones and push buildings to the property lines.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/th.e1a9a4d0f6.jpg (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?e1a9a4d0f6.jpg)
Arcade at the Marco Polo Hotel. Yes it has the arcades mandated by SOM's urban design guidelines, but the arcade is interrupted, ensuring the arcade won't be used (for most of this stretch of the arcade, the hotel presents a blank wall to the arcade too). The bump is to accomodate the ramp down to the car park.

der Reisender

the malls are designed, like you said, to suck in and focus the activities. many of the towers are inhospitable to walkers, gated off and lacking ground floor retail uses, particularly compared with other parts of SZ. doubtless there are still people but the large blocks, lack of ground floor activity, and fair-sized distances make it worse for peds. I live outside the SEZ, its a far more interesting (though downscale) walking experience

sorry to be getting off topic, but i'm enjoying this discussion. where's a better thread for it?

Euh no... I don't agree. I live right close to FuTian CBD and yesterday I had a 3 hours walk from South to North and there are more an more people walking down the streets, and when in 2 or 3 years most of the buildings will be completed you'll see that those streets are totally walkable and will be filled with pedestrians.

So they are broadening the construction site on the East side eating up the pedestrian walkway.
Then there is a kind of scaffolding corridor in the middle of the site. I have no clue of what it can be. Anybody has any clue?
Then there are those kind of workers barracks right in the middle of the site, this is also a mystery to me, why would they put the barracks in the middle? Shouldn't they be on the side if they want to start digging? Anybody? Any clue?

Here are the 3 pictures I took:

It is not being moved because there is no proof, we need a picture first. And secondly, preparing the construction site is just that, preparing the construction site so we keep it here and change the title to 'PREP' which means that. It will only be moved when piling, or some other part which is part of the structure starts being build. So, digging a hole, soil testing, or any of that stuff does not count.
