YannSZ November 13th, 2009, 07:34 AM Hello all,
Sorry no pictures but I have came by the construction site yesterday and the brick wall is completed now and there are the workers barracks along the East side of the plot. There is still a 2 storeys construction barrack in the middle of the site though.
A big pile of debris is covered in the center of the site too.
I'll try to take pictures next time.
YannSZ November 13th, 2009, 11:01 AM Only 2 pictures sorry.

Barracks are being finished. Can't wait to see many workers working on the site :)
CarlosBlueDragon November 13th, 2009, 07:38 PM ^^ "sorry" never mind, nice picture! Thanks for YannSZ job!! :)

scalziand November 13th, 2009, 10:14 PM So its actually 116 floors. Nice.
williamhou2005 November 16th, 2009, 10:04 AM Thanks for YannSZ's regular site updates. From your picture it seems they will start actual work quite soon as the 3 story worker's temporary building has nearly been completed. YannSZ, how long have you been living in Shenzhen? (or were you born in SZ)

I'm french and I move to Asia 10 years ago, 6 months in Macau 1 year in Hong Kong, then Shenzhen, back to Hong Kong in 2004 and back to Shenzhen.
No problem for the updates! I'm a big fan of this project.
Myster E November 17th, 2009, 12:57 AM ^^ off topic, but do you know what's happening to the other planned 600m tower, can't remeber the name but it has the Empire State Building as a backdrop for a rendering.
z0rg November 17th, 2009, 01:12 AM ^^ No news, but it is likely to be just around 400m in the end.
deepblue01 November 17th, 2009, 03:02 AM ^^ thats better than nothing imo. Its a very iconic building. BTW, would you know why shenzhen has two CBDs? Is it planned? For some reason, one looks very planned and the other looks natural although it may not look as good. Not too sure why they built the kinkey right next to the tall green building.
Squiggles November 17th, 2009, 05:25 PM This is a fantastic building. I hope that the final project stays true to the renderings. How tall is it without the spire?

YannSZ November 26th, 2009, 03:15 AM So many great pictures updates by z0rg/MCFXM
^^ Can someone explained to me what are they building right in the middle of the construction site? It looks like their building some brick walls.
wap-190 November 26th, 2009, 04:49 AM maybe it's a pool for the slurry to construct the diaphragm wall, like they did at the Shanghai Center.
YannSZ November 26th, 2009, 10:25 AM maybe it's a pool for the slurry to construct the diaphragm wall, like they did at the Shanghai Center.
??? I'm sorry, I'm not architect, not technician and my mother tongue is not english, can you translate this into some understandable english ? :) Thanks!
YannSZ November 26th, 2009, 11:00 AM From the picture it seems also that the main entrance for the construction site will be located on the north side, on FuHua road.
z0rg November 28th, 2009, 12:58 PM Upwards revision to 648m, 151 floors? Hope we can confirm this.

YannSZ December 2nd, 2009, 02:46 AM So I'm really confused. Can someone professional "read" this picture?
- Why are there some ground level barracks right in the middle when all the 2 storeys barracks are built on the left side?
- Why is there this weird construction in the top middle? It is made of bricks as we can see on 26th November z0rg post
- Then there is this pile of dirt covered by a black material
z0rg December 2nd, 2009, 03:00 AM ^^ I don't know what are they doing. No serious digging or anything.
They aren't working around the area of the main tower still.

antovador December 4th, 2009, 05:56 PM Great update Yannsz so they make rebars and dig holes for them like Shanghai Tower.
However a question remain, it will be 646 m (maybe 648 m) with Spire or 588 m without it ? Probably the spire remain since TST was revised to 634 m.

Too far to be shot on the same skyline picture :)
Shun Hing and Kingkey could be on the same building family picture, but not PingAn. FuTian CBD will have a very nice skyline, and all current projects are awesome in terms of design, features, sizes etc.

snapdragon January 14th, 2010, 11:21 AM z0rg are you sure it is 646 mts .I personally doubt it and it would be irritating to later find out the building has been scaled down to 500 mts
Scion January 14th, 2010, 01:53 PM ^^ It's either 646m with the spire or 588m without the spire. Many renders (the one in GB ceremony, in SZTV news, etc) have showed the tower without the spire. 588 in Chinese sounds a lot better than 646 too so it could be the spireless design.
snapdragon January 14th, 2010, 02:04 PM I am sure 888 sounds even better in Chinese, but would they consider that.

^^ Can you please translate 588 for me. From how i see it, its actually not a nice number even with the number eight etc. With the spire 646 isn't a good number if you add it together though.

In Shenzhen people care less about this kind of matter I suppose, this should not be the only factor to determine the find height of a building...the city was founded 30 years ago, as the youngest megacity in the world, the culture is quite diverse and not so "traditional Chinese" compared to other cities in China

How did you determine which is left which is right . Most buildings are symmeterical maybe it was just shot from behind the view you are accustomed to.
Also even with the traffic it is not clear which is right or left . Atleast if it were a car instead of a bus on the road we could have understood which direction the traffic is moving and thus determined that but that is also not clear.
droneriot January 19th, 2010, 10:37 AM Traffic is obviously moving toward the photographer.

The photographer who snapped that picture was standing on the Jintian Lu overpass at the eastern end of the crystal island on Shennan Dadao. He took the picture at a south westerly direction looking towards the Times Square complex.
This render is a quite accurate depiction of the surroundings so I'll point out where the photographer is. You can see that if we view the Ping'an towers from there, the shorter tower should be on the left.

Shenzhen downtown used to be LuoHu district, but this district now is quite old and had been badly urban planed (too few green areas, parks, too narrow streets for tall buidlings etc.). Now the new downtown of Shenzhen if FuTian district where is located PingAn building. It is lot better designed and structured, they want to make it a financial centre it is well located, not far from LuoHu and NanShan, right in the middle between ShenNan Road and BinHe Road which are the main roads that go through Shenzhen on an East to West axis. The Exhibition Centre is located inside this new CBD, there is an easy access to 2 borders linking to Hong Kong (HuangGang and FuTian checkpoints). The CBD is built on a North Shouth Axis that goes from LianHua hill (big public park) to the exhibition center, it contains, offices, the huge shenzhen city hall, apartments, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Shenzhen main Library, the future art museum, Malls, Parks etc...

Don't get me wrong .I like the shanghai tower ,but Shanghai tower won't settle into any skyline. It just has way too futuristic a desgin, but the shenzen tower would settle into any design on the earth.

This is construction site of the taller tower only.
Chinese Translations January 23rd, 2010, 05:06 PM Shenzhen downtown used to be LuoHu district, but this district now is quite old and had been badly urban planed (too few green areas, parks, too narrow streets for tall buidlings etc.). ..

Block after block of concrete and glass is monotonous. A city need needs greenery to bring in residents. With residents you bring in retail and night life. If you just have block after block of office buildings the area becomes a ghost town in the evenings and weekends.

I wouldn't worry yourselves with overall cost of this skyscraper to others built around the world. China's labor prices are vastly cheaper than other countries. This skyscraper built in NY would cost over a billion dollars.

snapdragon February 10th, 2010, 07:20 PM I think the cost of erecting a 70 metre spire was initially underestimated .It might look cheap but actually erecting spires of such length on top of such huge structures is not really cheap . Even during the construction of Guangzhou tv tower . Even there the engineers saw problems with erecting a 100 meter spire on top of a 450 mt structure.. So there is a real chance that actually the guys at Pigan decided to drop the spire as it really adds nothing to the building but to just get it into the record books .Which Wuhan is anyway all set to break .
Monzaemon February 10th, 2010, 07:20 PM If pingan is not built with the spire then im going to cry:(
snapdragon February 10th, 2010, 07:24 PM so shall all of us dear
Monzaemon February 10th, 2010, 09:08 PM just how hard is it to erect a building and add a spire? its just adding a spire!
luci203 February 10th, 2010, 09:41 PM just how hard is it to erect a building and add a spire? its just adding a spire!
Hard as putting and secure a gigant steel structure on a building hundreds of meters high.
ex:
Burj Dubai Spire ~ 350 tonnes
Taipei101 Spire ~150 tonnes
Not so easy as we think. And this spire look wery thick... :)
snapdragon February 10th, 2010, 10:00 PM Imagine holding a rod while standing on a chair . You will realise .It is hard to balance the thin long rod. SO basically if you have a 577 meters tall building You basically cant just tie the rod with ropes at the top .It has to be extended through solid foundation.
Infact During the guangzhou tv tower construction on the stability expeirments they did . They found the weak link to be the spire . Which could fall off due to high speed winds or earth quakes and they had to make lot of changes to design in order to ensure the planned spire could be executed.

They have to change (reinforce) the structure up to the last floor.
And is not that thin as it look. Is like 69m long and 6m wide at the base and 3m on the top. More or less like 5 trucks on top of eachoter, with more of them at the base... I would guess @250 tonnes (including the part inside the building).

Burj Dubai a debacle? I suppose so, to a degree. Expensive, Yes. Over budget, Yes. Construction delays, Yes.
But I defy you to find any supertall buildings that didn't have problems during construction/development/leasing. ESB was less than 25% leased for its first 15 years. The Twin Towers were grossly over budget. Sears Tower had to be sold off and vacted by Sears Roebuck. Resididential sales at the John Hancock Tower in Chicago were very slow after completion. As our the Trump Tower Chicago's right now. Taipei 101 was slow to lease up. SWFC is only 20-40% leased at the moment. And on and on.
Residences at the Burj Dubai sold extremely well. Whether those sales close is another question. Supertalls are tough cookies. If they were easy, every city in the world would have em.

Those towers weren't 2000+ foot towers and were in cities that could eventually support them, I think there are still a lot of questions surrounding this project. I'll be interested to see if it goes all the way.
spectre000 February 10th, 2010, 11:45 PM 2,000 feet or 1,000 feet. Really doesn't matter. Anything over 1,000 ft is tough to fill up. Shenzhen has a population of 8 million. I'm sure it can find the rents. Regardless, it already has a large anchor tenant. What would be more shocking is if this tower didn't have any problems. Cause most supertalls do.

On hold now, case in point. This project is a little too out there as well I think. If it was being built in Shanghai or Hong Kong I could understand, but a much lesser financially significant city is going to be a big stretch. These things are costly. I’ll remain skeptical until I see it more than half way up.

Ewan117 February 11th, 2010, 08:10 AM Shenzhen is a special economic zone, if there were to be any city in China that could withstand the Financial Crisis, Shenzhen would be one of them.
I think many of us is glad that Tianjin117 is on hold.... gives them more time to think about changing the design of the tower... this one doesn't (well only the spire on/off part)
SWFC was started in 1997, during the Asian Financial Crisis and when China's economy wasn't that dominant/steady and its main investors being from Japan
Shanghai and HK are financial powerhouses and so are Guangzhou City and Shenzhen
Struggling to find tenants? There are buildings in Perth (Australia) that are barely over 100meters that are struggling to find tenants, so this problem occurs in all cities. But when there is demand for office space, Shenzhen will have plenty, enough for transitions.
'whether it will be built or not?' that would be a line i would use when I'm referring to this tower's spire!!!
Scion February 12th, 2010, 07:50 AM This quote might bring some enlightenment to a certain person
I have lived and worked in Shenzhen for 23 years and have NEVER felt even remotely threatened. I have never been robbed. Taxi drivers never try to cheat me. Physically it is a VERY safe city.
It is also not some wild West factory town. Its official population is fourteen million making it the third most populous city in China. Unlike Shanghai and Beijing which have large rural populations, every one of the fourteen million Shenzheners is classified urban.
It is China's richest city with mile after mile of tree-lined middle class suburbs where people live around beautiful tropical gardens. It has a higher proportion of parks and gardens than any Chinese city other than Dongguan.
It is a major financial centre. China's largest financial institution, Ping An, is based in Shenzhen. Two of China's six listed banks are based in Shenzhen. Forty per cent of China's mutual funds are managed from Shenzhen. Shenzhen Airlines is China's largest private airline. HQ and R&D of two of the world's top ten electronics companies, Hua Wei and ZTE are based in Shenzhen. One of China's two stock exchanges is in Shenzhen. China's largest real estate developer, Vanke, is based in Shenzhen.
All of the above demonstrates why Shenzhen is such a magnet for immigrants and tourists from all over China and why it is one of the world's great skyscraper cities
Myster E February 12th, 2010, 12:51 PM Back on topic please, guys. Onn's thankfully been banned now.
maldini February 12th, 2010, 01:57 PM This building will be built. Guangdong province has 90+ million people or about 1/3 of the population of the US. They will need a few more of these 2000 feet buildings.
Blue Flame February 12th, 2010, 09:00 PM Nobody builds a 2000 foot skyscraper because they need space for people. If all they needed was space, they could fill up the intire city with 800 foot highrises. Usually supertalls are mainly ego projections.
snapdragon February 12th, 2010, 11:24 PM Yeah i hope their ego is good enough to get this done . As i really want to see this standing 2119 ft tall.
Ewan117 February 13th, 2010, 12:32 AM ^^Well, the city would look boring and dull if all the buildings were the same height. I think this is part of the planned cbd that shenzhen had, so it wouldn't really be a surprise that the building be tall, maybe just not this tall.

Ewan117 March 11th, 2010, 01:27 AM hmm, which city holds no 1? Are the renders more recent than the previous ones? I'm questioning because they haven't put much detail on the second tower

In my opinion they will release the spire at the vers last moment so that nobody will try to start a higher building before the completion.
Says 450m why are people still assuming 588?

This white machine is digging the ground with a drill while a metallic caisson is being inserted. Once it's finished digging, a crane will come and lower the rebar for the reinforced concrete pile. After this is done, concrete is poured and the caisson is removed.
There can be two purposes, and probably both are happening at the same time here.
- contiguous piles are being laid down in a perimeter and will act as retaining walls for the basement excavation
- deep and regularly spaced piles that are bored down to rock layers and are the actual foundation piles. Those will be inside the perimeter defined by the retaining wall.
Once all this is finished, excavation of the basement will commence.
I hope it helps :-)
Pengui March 19th, 2010, 05:59 AM You can see the rebar cage for some piles on the left on this picture.

Scion March 28th, 2010, 05:00 PM How close is this to Shun Hing and Kingkey FCP?
Too far to be shot on the same skyline picture :)
Shun Hing and Kingkey could be on the same building family picture, but not PingAn.
All we need is a right vantage point and all the towers (E Pacific, Merchants, Ping'an, Excellence Century, Hon Kwok, SEG, Feng Long, Kingkey, Shun Hing) can all be in one single pano.
And it appears the best vantage points are actually in Hong Kong - on some of the small hills just across the river.
