Tabanlioglu Architects design for the Astana Stadium is under construction in Kazakhstan
The stadium is to be used as a multifunctional entertainment complex for different sports and gathering purposes, but it is mainly programmed as a soccer field that fits the FIFA and UEFA criteria. Align with the elliptical outer form; the circulation line creates dynamic and peaceful areas. The structural elements mutually support each other and converge into a grid-like formation, in which façades, stairs and roof are integrated. The steel structure, transparent glass and the partially used galvanized sandwich panels on the facade create a strong and clear expression. The polycarbonate skylight surrounding the roof illuminates the facade and the main circulation zone. A two-tiered solution, with exclusive areas, is preferred; lower stands with 16,000 seating capacity situated at all four sides and the upper stands with 14,000 seating capacity are placed only on the east and west sides. The stadium, seating up to 30,000, has 24 portals for the entrance and exit of the spectators. The design introduces innovative solutions adopting high technology principles for operational management and dealing especially with harsh climatic conditions of the geography. The closed arena is heated and air-conditioned. The operable roof is an integral part of the structure. The main bearing construction being steel, the sliding roof shifts on the east-west direction. Polycarbonate elements cover the moving part of the roof for benefiting natural light; also grant impact resistance, sound absorption and natural ventilation. Apart from its functional features, the Astana Stadium is a symbolic building that reflects the modern and contemporary aspects of the new capital. The stadium constitutes a charming urban landscape and becomes a new scene in Astana tallying with the synergy of sports, games, hospitality, nature and contemporary architecture.

I must say, that's a fine looking stadium. The Turkish architects have done a great job. From the outside it looks far bigger than 30k, too! Great for Kazakhstan. :okay:

The only problem is that it looks like a tricky design to expand...? But, hell, who needs more people when it looks THIS good. :D

Fantastic design. The exteria is excellent. It's a better than the recently built 30,000 capacity stadiums recently built in Britain. They all look the same and aren't that special.

Astana is a brand new city which needs brand new and astonishing architecture. Whether there really is a need for it doesn't seem to matter (kind of a Central Asian Dubai). It actually wouldn't have surprised me if they had made it 50,000.

I love the interior of this stadium, for me the best in the world for a stadium this size.

When is the first game going to be played?

I like it too. It is very high-tech in a way but looks cosy with all the plump chairs and the retractable roof. I'm not much of a football fan, but I'd definitely go to the games just for the sounds and colors and the atmosphere.

^^ Don't forget that this is Kazakhstan, a nation of just 16mln. The Almaty stadium is currently the largest stadium in Kazakhstan at 13,500 and even so you don't always see it fill up to the max cap. There is simply no demand for a grander arena right now.

Kazhakhstan's stadiums have such mediocre capacities, I swear. Almaty has the Ortalyk Tsentralnyi Stadium with a 25,000 capacity, and Shymkent has the Kazhimukana Munaytpasova Stadium with a 30,000 capacity. Astana's proposed stadium will also have a 30,000 capacity.

^^ i wouldn't expect anything else. a 40 000 capacity or more stadium in kazhakhstan isn't sustainable, unfortunately.

I wish I could take this stadium over to England and show the clubs and architechts how to build a 30,000 stadium this is miles ahead of St Mary's, Walkers, Pride Park or worst of all the new Cardiff stadium. Hate to say but it's a shame that it is in Kazakhstan as we will never see this stadium in European football apart from maybe at international level it would be a perfect fit for a number of teams around Europe.

ASTANA (A.A) - 04.07.2009 - A Turkish company has constructed a stadium in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

Turkey's Sembol Insaat (construction company) built the "Astana Arena Stadium" in Astana, Kazakhstan which cost 185 million USD.

The stadium with a retractable roof panel will have a capacity to host 30,000 spectators. The construction began in 2006.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev inaugurated the stadium on Saturday.

The stadium is equipped with television networks with satellite antennas, broadcasting, and sound reinforcement with simultaneous translation in meeting halls, press-conference halls, display panel, and helicopter ground. The stands are located at two levels: 16,000 seats – at the lower and 14,000 – at the upper. VIP-zone is located between them in the western part of the stadium.

Besides Nazarbayev, Fettah Tamince, the chairman of the Rixos Hotels Executive Board and Sembol Insaat's founder; Kazakh ministers and lawmakers; Turkish Football Federation's Executive Board member Levent Kizil; Turkish national team coach Fatih Terim; and Turkish footballers Hakan Sukur and Hasan Sas participated in the inauguration ceremony.

After the ceremony, Kazakhistan's Locomotive Astana and Kazakh junior national team played a friendly match which was officiated by Italian referee Pierluigi Collina.

Hakan Sukur and Hasan Sas played for the Locomotive Astana team in the friendly match.

The Locomotive Astana defeated the junior national team 5-2. (BRC)

Astana Stadium
Astana, Kazakhstan (2005-2007)

Sporting Symbol

Intended to be a symbol of the burgeoning new capital of Kazakhstan, the Astana Stadium has a spectacular elliptical form and a retractable roof that can be closed in harsh winter weather conditions to protect the players, the spectators and the playing surface. Located on the highway connecting the airport to the city the stadium is principally designed as a venue for soccer but it can be adapted for other sports events including the country?s favourite sports ? wrestling, judo and boxing. The venue, set within extensive landscaping, has quickly become a landmark in the city.

The 30,000 stadium was conmived as a large amphitheatre with a distinctive and instantly recognisable form when viewed from a distance and from close proximity. Essentially a two·tiered structure, the lower terram, accommodating 16,000 seats, encircles the playing area while the upper stand on the east and west sides seats a further 14,000 spectators. There is effective separation of VlPs, spectators and players to ensure smooth access. All spectators are seated and have a clear sight line with an unobstructed view of the field of play. The playing surface is covered in high quality grass surface specified to meet FIFA and UEFA criteria. The grass can be covered for other events.

The Presidential Suite and sixteen VIP suites, are located on the west side of the stadium between the upper and lower terraces and are served by private elevators from the main concourse. The media section, the main control room, TV broadcasting facilities, restaurants, bars and a VIP reception hall are in the same section.

The main structure, designed by Buro Happold, is insitu reinforced concrete while prefabricated concrete elements are used in the construction of the stands. Parts of the east and west elevations are famd in profiled aluminium cladding. Natural stone and aluminium curtain wall is employed in the VIP areas. A spacious ambulatory runs around the stands linking to a concourse that contains food kiosks, restaurants and restrooms and 24 portals around the stadium ensure that the crowd are able to disperse swiftly after an event.

Two deep steel trusses run in an east·west direction carrying the main roof structure and also bear the weight of the sliding roof components. When weather conditions deteriorate the two moving parts are activated and slide over the cantilevered main roof elements, to meet above the centre of the bowl. It is an is an impressive spectacle when the giant roof panels glide toward each other. Polycarbonate panels in the retractable roof ensure natural light enters the stadium even when the roof is closed and besides light transmittanm, the membrane material resists deformation and has sound absorption.

The stadium floodlighting is mounted on the leading edge of the main roof beams thus obviating the need for corner pylons and ensuring there is minimal light spillage. Closing the roof reduces noise pollution to the surrounding area and simultaneously intensifies the competitive atmosphere within the stadium. When the roof is closed the stadium can be used as a covered arena for a variety of activities.

The Astana Stadium is intended to be a symbol of the growing international stature of the new capital of Kazakhstan. Sport and specifically socmr creates a common link between people of different cultures and international games are beamed around the globe by satelite TV. In this sense the Astana Stadium is a link between Kazakhstan and the world. The Football Union of Kazakhstan joined FIFA in 1994 and became a member of UEFA in 2002.

Stadia have become central to the lives of many people ? sport today has ousted every other form of entertainment. The development of satellite television and the internet has changed our perception of sport, creating a new breed of international superstars. Individual citizens can now, more than ever, participate in the success of their heroes and the fortunes of their national team. In the process sport has developed as the major global culture extending its reach to embrace all people regardless of religion, race or colour. Astana Stadium is a powerful expression of this new global imperative.
