http://puresuzuki.com/samurai2.htm

Monday, January 28, 2008
CAMP GUILLERMO NA*KAR, Lucena City – Sixteen members of a mountaineering club were rescued by the Philippine Air Force when they lost track while exploring Mt. San Cristobal in Dolores, Quezon Saturday night, an Army spokesman said.
Maj. Randolf Cabang*bang, spokesman of the Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command, said the mountaineers were employees of Pencil Inc., an advertising firm.
Cabangbang told The STAR that the PAF’s 743rd Combat Group led by a certain Lt. Bautista were able to locate and rescue the mountain trekkers at around 10 a.m. yesterday.
Helicopters from the PAF’s 505th Search and Rescue Group airlifted the group to the Dolores town proper.
Two of the mountaineers, Eric Sanchez and Sony Angeles, were brought to the Camp Nakar Station Hospital due to foot fractures. – Arnell Ozaeta, James Mananghaya and Rudy Santos

dinabaw March 2nd, 2008, 11:11 AM Climbers’ Responsibilities…
There are so many etiquette that should be follow, manners that would help us become more responsible and efficient in everyday that we do. I will share this to all of those who are into outdoor activities or adventure, an etiquette that help us become a more responsible individual.
*
If there is an established trail, walk in a single line and avoid creating new trails. Widening of such and formation of new ones can damage the soil and kill the plants crossing the paths of hikers.
*
Do not take anything from the forests as souvenir. If each climber would bring home one souvenir, the future climbers may be left with nothing but ugly remains of a once-beautiful place.
*
Avoid disturbing wildlife. Many species of animals become stressed due to disturbance by man.
*
Never leave garbage along the trail or at the campsite. Oftentimes, the local communities do not have well-managed waste disposals, so it will be better to bring the garbage to the cities for proper disposal.
*
For human waste, each climber can dig his own “toilet”, about six inches deep, and cover it with soil afterwards. Common latrines are proven to be bad because the soil cannot break down concentrated amounts of waste in reasonable time; it would be much better to bring along waste treatment gear to bring down the wastes back to the cities for proper disposal.
*
Bring along camping equipment like stoves to minimize the use of forest materials (like wood for cooking). In some cases, the only resources available are almost irreplaceable.
*
Do not bathe or wash dishes along rivers. The people downstream may be using the water for drinking purposes. Do the washing or bathing about twenty feet (make that 100 ft.) from the river bank. A more acceptable bathing practice is to do it without using soap.
*
Before traveling to a foreign culture or to an isolated village, it is best to learn the locals’ culture to avoid embarrassing situations, both to the visitors and to the hosts.
*
Be sensitive to the values of the local people. Tourists may bring culture shock to the villagers and may alter the basic values of the population.
*
Abandon the old practice of digging trenches at the side of tents of campsites. Doing this leaves permanent damage to the environment.
*
Do not buy souvenir items made from rare animal or plant species or questionable sources.
*
Find out the maximum capacity of the trekking area before going to prevent over-crowding and to minimize the impacts on the environment.
*
Always register with the municipal or barangay (village) or park office or leave the names and number of the trekkers to any local official at the jump-off point. Tell them the date the group is expected to return so that emergency measures can be adopted the soonest possible time in case of accident.
*
Avoid giving money or token candies to the children in areas visited. The practice will ultimately affect the local children’s set of values and condition them that each hiker is a source of easy money.
*
Make sure that health measures are taken into account in order to avoid disease transfer between the visitors and the locals.
*
If no one is familiar with the destination, always hire a guide. It saves time and lessens the probability of accidents.

i totally agree. would not want doing that even with my 5 year old kid too. but i've seen the gears at camp sabros, and i could say it's safer than riding a boeing. the limit load of one grip is 8 tons, there are 6 grips for each person so you could imagine the safety vs bad luck computation there. but still, having kids join you in your daredevil adventure is but of course, for the "daredevils" only.

Anyway, congratulations to Ron for conquering Mount Apo..
Ako, hanggang pangarap pa lang. Back in college, I even wanted to climb up Mount Apo (due to frequency in Davao) before I graduate....Now that I'm a graduate, I even feel tired whenever I take the stairs to the 3rd floor. :D

Waldenstrom March 18th, 2008, 07:44 AM sana magkaroon ng Cable car paakyat ng Mt. Apo para sa aming disabled (tamad umakyat).
dinabaw March 18th, 2008, 07:56 AM eh doc yung cable hanggang Sabros lang you need 6,000 ft. more hehe, naku yung sa Abs- Cbn's Sports Unlimited mga gurls at matatanda na akyat ang Apo, of course minus the backpack :colgate: the trick is when climbing do not think na malayo pa ang peak para lang yung daily walk at kailangan may jokster para mawala ang pagod! :colgate:
habagatcentral1 March 18th, 2008, 08:10 AM ^^ Di ba mas mahirap ang Davao-Kapatagan ascent as compared to Kidapawan-Ilomavis route?

Hindi masyado bigla ang ascent sa kapatagan trail as opposed to ilomavis kaya lang much longer siya ... ^^

Apo Climb ^^I would love to climb with you guys at some point but it will have to wait beyond next year. I am living in London and I visited the Philippines not so long ago. This year I'm climbing in Scotland, the Atlas range in Morocco, and soem of the volcanoes in Indonesia. Next year I already have plans to climb Kilimanjaro and Mount Olympus. By late next year I may be living in Hong Kong which is just a short hop for the Philippines. There is a chance I could join you on trips thereafter. I'd certainly like to see (and climb) Mt Mayon at some point. :)

Langur April 13th, 2008, 04:12 PM there are great mountains in UK particularly in Scotland , btw what's the highest point in UK?Yes there are hundreds of mountains in Scotland but they're not particularly high. The highest, Ben Nevis, is just 1344m. However Scottish mountains in winter are a lot more challenging than much higher mountains in hotter countries. A couple of years ago I easily climbed Mt Kinabalu in Malaysia which, at 4095m, is more than four times as high as the 1022m Buachaille Etive Mor in Scotland from which I had to turn back owing to white-out blizzards and lacking crampons and ice axe to deal with snow slopes. I have now invested in crampons and ice axe because I don't want to have to turn back owing to excess snow and ice remaining on Jebel Toubkal (4167m) and the twin Ouanoukrim summits (4089m and 4083m) which I will attempt in Morocco's Atlas mountains next month. As I'm based in London the Alps are actually just as close to me as the Scottish mountains. And because we are all EU citizens there are no passport/visa issues. We can even live and work in each others countries without a passport/visa - so travelling there is of course no problem. With low cost airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair it also costs the same to get from London to the Alps as to Scotland. However the Alps are high (up to 4810m) and extremely difficult to climb. They retain their snow and ice all through the summer and are extremely steep and jagged. That makes them spectacularly beautiful, but summiting the high Alpine peaks is for technical mountaineers only. I'm not at the stage where I can safely cross glaciers without guides or climb vertical ice walls. The kind of climbing you are doing in the Philippines is much more at my level. :)

wow you are TRUE mountaineer, nice you climbed Mt. Kalimanjaro your lucky and it's snow cap is still there ,in 10 years it will be gone! any plans to climb Everest?
Some avid mountaineers said it's more challenging to climb Mt. Apo than Mt Kinabalu even w/out a snow cap :)
I think Indonesian Mountains/Volcanos is very challenging! :okay:
Langur April 13th, 2008, 06:03 PM ^ Haha no I'm not a true mountaineer. I'm not really a "climber" at all. I only go for easy trekking peaks. I also haven't climbed Kilimanjaro yet. I'm going for that next year. In any case Kilimanjaro is an easy trekking peak. It's very high (5895m) but its volcanic slopes are gentle. The only real difficulty there is acclimatisation to the altitude. I can well believe that Mount Apo is harder. The peaks I'm going for in Indonesia are also easy volcanic treks. I am not going for the very challenging 4884m Puncak Jaya in Papua for instance (highest peak in Oceania). I also have no plans to climb Everest. It's extremely dangerous up there and I am a long way short of having sufficient experience. It's also very expensive - about £15,000 (~$30,000 US) for the permits, guides, etc. I can think of better ways to spend that kind of money!! I do have plans though. Here is my list:
2008:
- Jebel Toubkal = 4167m (highest in North Africa)
- Timesguida Ouanoukrim = 4089m (2nd highest in North Africa)
- Ras-n-Ouanoukrim = 4083m (3rd highest in North Africa)
- Gunung Rinjani = 3726m (highest in Lombok)
- Gunung Semeru = 3676m (highest in Java)
- Gunung Agung = 3142m (highest in Bali)
- Gunung Penanjakan = 2770m (great view!)
2009:
- Kilimanjaro = 5895m (highest in Africa)
- Mt Olympus = 2919m (highest in Greece - legendary home of the Olympian gods)
2010:
- Aconcagua = 6962m (highest in the world outside of Asia)
- Mont Blanc = 4808m (highest in the Alps)
2011:
- Mt Elbrus = 5642m (highest in Europe - see my thread here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=595729))
2012:
- Chimborazo = 6268m (highest in the world from centre of the Earth)
Earlier this year I was in India trekking in the Himalayas. From Sandakphu on the Singalila Ridge (on the India/Nepal border) we could see four of the world's top five highest mountains. To the left, and clustered together, were Everest (no 1, 8848m), Lhotse (no 4, 8516m), and Makalu (no 5, 8462m). However the view directly ahead was dominated by the mightly Kanchenjunga (no 3, 8586m), the 3rd highest mountain in the world, and highest in India (though India claims K2 as well). Here is the view we saw (source (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aluytenuk/155408264/sizes/l/in/set-72157594271571950/)):

Langur April 13th, 2008, 06:43 PM This is what I want to climb most in the Philippines. It must be one of the most elegant and perfectly symetrical cones in the world. Have you guys done Mayon yet?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v496/Fatmonkey/Scenery/Mayon.jpg
mwg12a April 13th, 2008, 08:40 PM They probably would be needing to coordinate with the Philippine Volcanology institute first before attempting that volcano. I know I would.... LOL
Langur April 13th, 2008, 09:05 PM ^ From Summitpost website:
http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/155214/mayon.html
"Anyone wishing to attempt a climb of this mountain should first contact the Department of Tourism office in Legazpi City (Tel: (052) 482-0712 / 482-0813). The DOT representatives are experienced climbers and keep in close contact with PHIVOLCS regarding volcanic activity. The DOT can arrange for guides (necessary) and porters and provides comprehensive information.
It must be noted that the surface on the peak is hollow and there is danger of falling !!!
No permits required."
And you can check for volcanic activity here:

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6175/sportsunlimiteddp1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
March 15, 2008
For the first time ever.. The Sports Unlimited Adventure Team is about to embark in the ultimate mountain journey in the Philippines. We're climbing the highest peak in the country, Mt. Apo. Mt. Apo lies on the borders of Davao, North Cotabato and Bukidnon.
It is virtually unexplored and provides a spectacular variety of natural landscapes from forest greens to rock faces. Our goal, to reach Mt. Apo's majestic peak, 10,311 feet. Eversince Sports Unlimited met Sonny and Jackie Dizon, through them we have been discovering Davao and its endless adventure-filled possibilities.
Mt. Apo is Davao's most precious treasure and one of the country's most popular climbing destinations. Finally, after all these years, this is the year, 2008. With an invitation from Jackie Dizon to climb Apo with a special group that she
has put together, the goal of getting to the top of the highest mountain in the Philippines can finally become a reality for our Sports Unlimited Adventure Team.
The adventure begins
March 1 before noon, we left Camp Sabros after our awesome zipline adventure for our next expedition, our climb to the summit of Mt. Apo. We met Jackie Dizon and the rest of her buddies and amigas in Kapatagan where all climbers assembled and was our jump-off point for the climb.
Jackie put together a group of about 40, family and friends from all walks of life, from Davao, Manila and even the States, many of whom were first-time climbers of Apo like our team, and there were a few who, believe it or not, have never climbed a mountain before.
First-time climbers or not, mountaineers or not, everybody was psyched, maybe a bit anxious, but definitely raring to get this climb started.
Help from "outdoor specialists"
In all the adventure packages that Sonny and Jackie have set up in Davao, their adventure partner has always been the Edge Group. They have dubbed themselves as "outdoor specialists" and have stated that "they are all mountain people." For amateurs, it's best to join organized climbs led by experienced mountaineers who know the safest trails up the mountain.
When climbing, a group always needs a lead man, the Edge members introduced us to our leader whom the group fondly calls " Mr. Big." Don't be deceived by Mr. Big's size, we have no doubt that he can take us up the mountain safely and with his funny larger than life personality, we're sure we'll be laughing and smiling all the way to the summit.
When you first start the climb the thought of how many steps you have to take before you get to 10,300 feet is very daunting. We were advised by our veteran mountaineer friends that when you are starting a climb like this, we should not focus too much on where this journey ends, instead focus more on enjoying the journey itself.
They assured us that if you love nature and the outdoors, there will be times when you forget you're climbing because of the unique, raw and stunning views we will see from different vantage points all throughout the climb up.
Not only is Mt. Apo one of the top climbing destinations in the Philippines, for the locals who live on the foothills of this mountain, they use the land to plant all kinds of vegetation.
Speaking of the locals, climbing this mountain is also a source of their livelihood. I'm sure every amateur climber in this group will agree that the porters who we hire to carry our backpacks we cannot do without. The climb would be a lot more difficult to conquer if we had to carry everything on our backs, these porters are inately mountaineers.
After about 1 and a half hours of trekking, the group gets our first break at a place they call "Paradise" like we said earlier, not only is this climb all about reaching the top, but it's also about getting to know each other and creating not only climbing memories, but all kinds of memories that will bring a smile to our faces when we look back at this adventure.
It's only the beginning of our climb, but we can already tell that Jackie Dizon made sure that she put together a fun group of people to ensure that whatever happen everyone has to enjoy. Did we mention that part of the group climbing with us are from Holiday Spa and Gym here in Davao, which may explain the guys with six packs.
After that good dose of laughter, we were ready to resume our climb. Rejuvenated, hydrated and if I may say so myself, the enthusiasm of the group was a natural energy booster for me.
Mountain climbing do's and don'ts
Here are some do's and don'ts when climbing a mountain as raw and as unchartered as Mt. Apo. First of all, it is a given that you must always listen to the advise of people who have climbed the mountain before because you can learn a lot from their experiences. Why learn the hard way, right?
Here are the do’s, when you are holding on to branches or stepping on rocks, make sure that the branch is sturdy enough to take your weight and also make sure that the rock you are stepping on is not loose.
You also want to double check the branches or plants that you hold on to be sure that they don't have thorns or sharp leaves that can cut your hands, it's advisable that you bring gloves that will protect your hands when passing through thorny plants.
Safety first
Some don’ts when climbing. Do not go too far ahead of the guide that is in charge of your group. Do not sacrifice safety even if it's a shorter way but a trickier trail, you are better off not taking the shortcut and go the longer but safer way.
Unless told by your mountaineer guide that it's okay, do not drink from any water source that you see along the trail. Believe me, one of the worst things you could suffer from when in the mountains is a bad stomach. No need to expound on that.
Majority of the first part of the climb up was passing through the thick forest that was quite wet because for the past few days before our climb.. it was raining.
Do not panic if you don't see any trail ahead.. like we said, this trail is very raw and at times you are just passing through thick bushes that are taller than you... make sure you are never left alone and that there is always someone you can see either in front or behind you.
Now..if you do find yourself alone.. stop..and listen for voices and then determine where the voices are coming from...you can also call out loud to get an answer from the other climbers.
Must-have trail food
It was past lunch time so we took our second break. Sometimes it's best not to eat a very heavy lunch since you are climbing up the best things to eat during the middle of the day are light but energy giving trail foods. We recommend that you have them with you as you climb. Let's call these trail foods "mountain must-haves."
I know my partner Marc brought with him chocolate bars, fiber bars, and of course a lot of water. I brought a mixture of grains like oats with raisins and also different kinds of dried fruits. Jackie Dizon's favorite trail food is dried mango which she brought a whole lot of and shared generously with the whole group.
You can never have enough water so if you are thirsty, drink. Do not skimp on hydrating yourself although the weather gets cooler as you get higher, that does not mean that you need less water. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of water. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
"Take nothing but pictures"
Of course aside from carrying your trail food, always carry your camera. You never know when you will chance upon a beautiful and rare view, or a pretty place in the middle of nowhere. That's why part of the mountaineers’ motto is, "when climbing a mountain, take nothing but pictures."
That was a much needed break, we've been trekking for over 4 hours at this point so this may be when you start feeling a little bit fatigued, but we just have to remember that "nothing great comes easy."
I think it's safe to think that, just think, if you make it to the peak, you can say you climbed the highest mountain in the Philippines. Now that sounds great.
We try very hard on Sports Unlimited to bring you to places you may have never been to before, we enjoy doing that. But you know what's more enjoyable? Going to places we’ve never been to either. If you like being in harmony with nature, then you will love this climb.
You definitely see a different type of natural beauty when you are in the depths of a mountain. Ah, the wonder of the wilderness.
Determined to make it to the top
We have to be honest though, if you decide to conquer the country's highest peak, a B-plus effort is not going to cut it. You really need to be determined, driven and ready to push yourself to the limit. With the pleasures of experiencing the beauty of this mountain comes your ability to be very patient, it's definitely enjoyable, but it's not easy.
We are nearing our 6th hour of trekking on day one of our climb to the peak of Mt. Apo, we are faced with the decision whether or not we stop now while we still have enough light, so it will be easier to set up our tents and cook, have an early dinner, call it an early night so we can get enough rest for our trek tomorrow where we need to ascend to the summit.
The decision of the group, stop while we still had daylight that meant spending the night at Camp Baruring Emergency Camp Site. This camp is about 2 hours away from Camp Goody Goody which is normally the camp site where you spend the night on day 1.
We may not have had the most comfortable seating arrangements, no one really expects that when camping in the mountains, but the delicious food that the Edge Group prepared for us totally made up for the lack of luxury dining.
The minute our stomachs were satisfied, our bodies felt the fatigue of our 6 hour trek and we immediately retreated to our tents.
Mt. Apo adventure day 2
March 2, second day of our climb, 5am wake up call. As soon as the sun started to come up, one by one, everyone started to come out of their tents and you can hear the voices of the coffee drinkers in the group requesting in symphony for a much needed hot cup of coffee, the air early in the morning is pretty nippy.
Even before breakfast was served, the group, led by Francis decided to do some stretching to get our muscles warmed up and to get our juices flowing. After our exercise session, breakfast was served. I have to say, when you climb a mountain with Jackie Dizon, you may be in the middle of the "boondocks", but the food served sure hits the spot.
Everyone seemed very satisfied with breakfast and now that we were all fueled up, we were ready to start day two of our climb. Today, if all goes right, we will achieve our goal of getting to the summit of Mt. Apo, over 10,000 feet above sea level. Our short term goal though is to get to Camp Goody-Goody, that's about a 2-hour trek.
So far, all is good, everybody seems to be having a good time, but of course, in the back of our minds, we know that the higher we get, the tougher the climb will become. When climbing a high mountain like Mt. Apo, you have to prepare yourself not just physically but mentally as well.
Like we said earlier, when climbing any mountain, make sure you make water your best buddy, always have some with you, the same goes for easy to carry trail food, so when you feel that you need a quick picker-upper, you can munch on them while you walk.
"Leave nothing but footprints"
We all know that where there is food, there is trash. Empty water bottles, wrappers, plastic bags, though they are empty, make sure you still take them with you when you go down the mountain. That's another mountaineer motto, when climbing a mountain, leave nothing but footprints.
Marc arrived in Camp Goody-Goody with some of our team then I arrived. How can you not stop to take pictures? Who knows when you're going to get to go down this path again, maybe never. So you definitely want to document the pretty places that you pass.
Now we know why this would have been a better suited camp site to spend the night, there is a lot more space to pitch tents, ground is a lot flatter and the tall trees seem to form a circle which gives this camp site a cozy feel.
Our team decided that from this point on, we had to pick up the pace, we wanted to be very sure that we get to the summit before late afternoon which is when there is more chance of rain.
Taking a break from climbing
I know we said we would pick up the pace and try to stop less so that we get to the top earlier but, playing with this "mountain toy", if you could call it that for lack of a better term was so tempting. Role playing like you were Tarzan in the real depths of the mountain. Come on, that's hard to resist.
Before you even ask the question we will answer you, no, we do not set anything up for camera purposes, all the things you see us doing and all the things we are seeing are all natural wonders. All right, enough playing, we really have to keep climbing. Our guides are promising us that after this downhill trek, the forest will end.
It's not that we are tired of the forest, it's just that we know that once we get out of the forest we then get to the boulder face of the mountain and we're told that we'll be getting a great view that will show us how high we have actually climbed from inside the forest since we are so deep within it, we really can't tell.
Will everybody make it to the top? Find out next week.

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/6175/sportsunlimiteddp1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
March 29, 2008
We did it! We survived the forest, everyone is in one piece! Great job team, now we're staring at the last face of our climb to the top. We all took a deep breath and braced ourselves for the boulders. Who knew that there was this after the forest?
Talk about a complete transformation of the mountain. From being covered with lush greens to getting a complete shave and left with huge boulders. Let me tell you, it is overwhelming to see for the first time where we came from, down there, and where we are going, all the way up there! Seeing the group ahead of us climbing the boulders so high up sends a chill up your spine. I'll be honest, I am not a rock climber so looking at how high we have to climb is scary, but this I can say now, you need courage to climb Mt. Apo. This is the first time we get to see a real view, clear of trees and bushes, absolutely beautiful. Now you can look and stare all you want, but for amateur climbers, here's a helpful tip, do not climb and look at the same time. Climb, stop, look, admire, then climb again. Don't we normally have a harness when we do this? Talk about natural rock face. You won't get any more outstanding than this if you are a rock climber. Now this is one of the unique things you will experience when climbing Mount Apo, this we have never done or seen before, picking wild berries from berry plants that are growing straight out of the boulders.
For many of us, eating these fresh fruits after munching on dried preserved fruits since we started this climb is a total treat. Now how cool is this. Marc, Jackie and myself can't get enough of these berries, it's past our lunchtime so these berries are a great unexpected appetizer. Alright, we can't get carried away, back to climbing. Whatever you do when climbing these boulders, .especially if you've never been in this situation before is don’t look down.
Can't help it, we needed to stop and take this view all in, it's just spectacular, stunning, super. I think you get the picture. This makes every ache you are feeling worth while, this view. We are so overwhelmed and so proud that our team has made it this far. It's one thing to climb the mountain, it's another thing to be climbing and shooting a show at the same time. We have not reached our goal of the summit yet, but we can see clearly now where we are going, not too far now. Marc and I cannot help but feel so proud of our Sports Unlimited crew.
Alright Gang, we got to get going. See that smoke? What is that? Nothing to be worried about we are assured by our guides, but definitely something we need to see we're told, alright crew, follow that smoke. Sulfur steam coming out of the mountain? This mountain is constantly surprising us. You can look at it like you are at a party and your host is constantly dishing out things throughout the night to surprise the guests, that's how I feel. We're guests at this climbing party, Mt. Apo is our host, and we are constantly being surprised. First the unexpected wild berries,
and now a "sulfur side show." Terrific! More picture taking. We were warned that sulfur smells, but at this point, the smell takes a back seat to the surprise of seeing such a sight all the way up here.
Our guides tell us that now we are not far at all from the summit, but that the last ascend is the toughest so we will be stopping at Camp White Sand which is in the peak of what the mountaineers call "Baby Apo." I took that as a very encouraging statement because we all know that where the baby is, the mommy is nearby.
What a relief getting to the top of Baby Apo. Climbing those boulders was really an unbelievable challenge. It seems like everybody is here, all that rock climbing made us very hungry. While having lunch we felt the rain, that's fine, we brought out our raincoats and just prayed that the rain stops by the time we make our final ascend to the summit. Our guides tell us that Mt. Apo saves the best challenge for last, check out how steep an ascend we have to make before we get to the peak. We've come this far, nothing will stop us now. We just have to wait till the rain dies down and then we will tackle the final face of this climb. This is what we were worried about, rain. We have reached our last stop before reaching the peak of Mt. Apo. This is the crater lake. We have come this far and we are not taking any risks, we decided to wait here at the crater till the rain stops and then just a few more minutes of climbing, and we will be at the top of the
highest mountain in the Philippines.
We are finally here! After taking, who knows, hundreds of thousands of steps, our team has made it to the summit of Mt. Apo. Words cannot describe what we are feeling. Saying that getting to the top is a great feeling is an understatement. You feel more than great. You feel a certain empowerment. You feel a voice shouting from inside you that's saying, I can do whatever I set my mind on doing. You feel very proud of yourself.
At the peak of Mt. Apo, we were surrounded by fog and could not see what was below us, but that did not get in the way of us knowing and feeling how high we have come and what we have achieved. After many minutes of celebrating at 10,311 feet to be exact, it was time for us to trek about 10 minutes down where we were staying the night, the Summit Camp.
We got to the peak of Mt. Apo at about 2:30 pm, by 3pm we were at the Summit Camp and by 4pm, when we got settled both physically and emotionally, it started to rain cats and dogs, so everyone retreated to their tents and used this time to give our bodies a much needed rest. After an hour or so, the rain stopped and again, one by one, armed with caps and jackets, everyone started coming out of their tents to do what the Pinoy does best, celebrate! You can tell that everyone's spirit was uplifted, that's just what the peak of Mt. Apo does to you. Aside from layered clothing, the group found other ways to keep warm, good drinks and dancing.
When night comes, you need light, fire gives you that. When night comes, you need warmth, fire gives you that. So the group hit two birds with one stone, we got the fire we needed when we were all treated to a fire dance. Again, another surprise during this climbing party. We could hardly believe that we were watching this kind of entertainment that we normally only expect to see on the beach, yet again, Mt. Apo surprises us. After the fire dancer treat came dinner, and then, everyone was psyched to wake up the next day before the crack of dawn to get back up to the peak to see the sunrise.
We have seen the sun rise from numerous places in the Philippines, but let me tell you, to see it from the highest peak in the Philippines sends a certain chill up your spine! You suddenly feel all these different emotions, and then you think this in hindsight, climbing a mountain can be contradictory, with the hardships come accompanying joy. From this peak, on a clear day, you can see all of Davao and the oceans that surround it. From this peak, even on a dark and cloudy day, you can see the bright and jubilant smiles of all that have made it here.
March three, third day, early morning, time to leave the mountain. I'll be very honest with you, this climb was one of the most fulfilling things I have done in the Philippines, this group started climbing this mountain as friends, and I can say now that we are going down the mountain as family. We have conquered a tough challenge together, and that calls for…. Make up! Hahahahaha! Well, like I have been saying, a climb to Mt. Apo is always different with Jackie Dizon. The thought of leaving the mountain conjures up many thoughts, most of it though honestly is related to a nice shower and finally, after three days, feeling squeaky clean. Can’t wait.
Our trek down Mt. Apo was a totally different experience from climbing up. Normally, if you really take your time, this trek down takes about 4 hours, Again, being able to see where we needed to get to from the top of the mountain was a great motivator for all of us. After a few last pictures by many of us from the top, we all started to make our way down. Like we said earlier, Mt. Apo lies on the borders of Davao, North Cotabato and Bukidnon, and we were told that the end of our journey will be in Kadapawan City, North Cotabato. Marc ran down the mountain and made it to the bottom in record time. I arrived about an hour later and the rest of the group, a few hours later, going down was also a very beautiful and enjoyable trail. After we reached concrete, we were given a very warm welcome by the City of Kidapawan. They prepared special certificates for Sports Unlimited and the rest of our group saying that we have completed our climb to Mt. Apo. Everyone in Kidapawan made us feel so special, it reminded us of the special place we just came from, a peak 10, 311 feet up, the majestic Mt. Apo.

dinabaw May 1st, 2008, 09:40 AM ^ Haha no I'm not a true mountaineer.
Here is the view we saw (source (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aluytenuk/155408264/sizes/l/in/set-72157594271571950/)):

nice @langur ,hey what do you mean " highest in the world from centre of the earth" ?
Langur May 14th, 2008, 06:37 PM nice @langur ,hey what do you mean " highest in the world from centre of the earth" ?Obviously Mt Everest, at 8848m, is the highest mountain in the world above sea level. However the world bulges at the equator so in fact the summit of Everest is not the furthest point from the centre of the earth. Mountains close to the equator, whose summits are lower than Everest when measured from sea level, have summits that are actually further from the centre of the earth than Everest's. The volcanic peak of Chimborazo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimborazo_%28volcano%29) in Ecuador (and Ecuador is not surprisingly on the equator.... ;) ) is 6268m above sea level. That makes it a very high mountain - higher than any mountain on any continent aside from South America or Asia - but nonetheless far from being the highest mountain in the Andes, let alone the world. However, owing to the equatorial bulge, the summit of Chimborazo is the furthest point from the centre of the earth. Chimborazo was also first climbed by a hero of mine, Edward Whymper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Whymper), in 1880. Whymper had already made a great name for himself in Europe as one of the leading lights of the "Golden Age of Alpinism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_age_of_alpinism)". He made the first ascent of the Matterhorn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matterhorn), the most famous and magnificent peak in the Alps, back in 1865, and he also made the first ascents of several other 4000m peaks in the Alps, and half a dozen other great peaks (5000 or 6000m+) in the Ecuadorian Andes. In the late 18th century Chimborazo was also believed to be the world's highest mountain above sea level. However, as modern mapping expanded, higher peaks in the Andes and hundreds of higher peaks in the "Greater Himalaya" (ie Himalayas, Karakoram, Pamirs, Hindu Kush, Hindu Raj, Kunlun Shan etc) were discovered. However Chimborazo can still claim the furthest point from the centre of the earth. :)
By the way I just got back from Morocco this morning. On Monday I summited Toubkal (4167m) and on Tuesday (yesterday) I climbed the twin summits of Ouanoukrim (Timesguida at 4089m and Ras at 4083m). These are the three highest summits in the Atlas mountain range and in North Africa. :)

MANILA, Philippines - At least one student mountaineer was killed while two remain missing following a weekend mountaineering gig at Mount Pundaquit in San Antonio town in Zambales province.
SPO2 Roberto Lorico of the San Antonio town police said the nine others had been rescued as of early Monday morning, while search operations are still ongoing for the two.
"Tumatawid sila sa creek at natangay ng agos. Sa lakas ng agos tumama ang ulo (They were crossing a creek when the strong current washed them away. The fatality hit his head)," Lorico said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Toll in mountaineering mishap: 2 dead, 1 missing
06/23/2008 | 09:44 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The death toll in the mountaineering mishap in Zambales province last weekend rose to two after rescuers recovered the body of a second victim early Monday.
SPO2 Roberto Lorico of the San Antonio town police said rescuers recovered the body of Joan Pimentel at 6:30 a.m., after the body of Joseph Belarca was found Sunday afternoon.
"Nakuha ang bangkay ni Joan Pimentel 6:30 a.m. Kahapon mga 1:30 p.m. nakuha ang bangkay ni Joseph Belarca (Rescuers found the body of Joan Pimentel at 6:30 a.m. today. At 1:30 p.m. Sunday they found the body of Joseph Belarca)," Lorico said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said several teams from the local police and Pundaquit village are still in the field looking for at least one other mountaineer, identified as Thaddeus Reandazo.
At least nine other mountaineers had been rescued earlier, he said.
Initial investigation showed the group started climbing Mt. Pundaquit Saturday morning, but police learned of it only after the body of Belarca was found.
"Dapat sa police station nakikipag-coordinate sila (They should have coordinated with the police station)," he said.
Earlier, Lorico said the mountaineers were crossing a creek when the strong current washed them away. Belarca hit his head. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/102683/Toll-in-mountaineering-mishap-2-dead-1-missing)

defUSED_bOi July 7th, 2008, 09:09 AM ^^

This Mt. Pinagbanderahan is actually the third peak of the hills collectively known as Gulugod Baboy. (525+ MASL)
This trek this really good for beginners then after the exhausting climb, refresh yourself on the beautiful islands of Sombrero and Sepok.

the pictures does not really justify the beauty of the place. the temperature is around 50 deg F. lili, im sure you will be just as good in hiking knowing fully well how it is in manhattan. :)

Ibex July 30th, 2008, 03:56 PM May porter naman talaga doon. required yun kasi sila ang nagbabantay na di ma abuse ang natural wonder sa kanilang lugar. Bawal magdala pababa kahit na anong bagay from up there :):):)
dinabaw July 30th, 2008, 03:59 PM ^^lol haha may built pa ha , pero the problem is the chasis  btw di ba dapat ang climb eh tugma sa kanilang sked(DOT or Municipal of San Isidro) ? or you can climb any day?

defUSED_bOi August 4th, 2008, 12:24 PM thank God we had a safe climb in Mt. Mariveles (Tarak Ridge) last weekends despite of the bad weather. but still we had a great trek..
on our way up, the weather is just cloudy and it waits us to get to the campsite near the ridge and pitch our tents and set up for dinner before the heavy rains pour down and strong winds came. thanks talaga kay Lord!
we had our socials ( inuman session at panlaban sa lamig ng panahon) inside the tent then i had a good sleep.:D
in the morning, we never got a clearing:(
we just had a glimpse of the view of Corregidor Island but we didn't able to see the view when we're on the campsite.
and we failed to reach the summit even it's just meters away due to zero visibility (safety first).. and this only means one thing... we shall return!
but the experience was superb... :okay:
it's so hard for me to take pictures due to rain. good thing my co-mountaineer has a Olympus 790 SW , so we have shots under the rain.
on our way down, the rain never ceases and i really love it!
rainforest at its best! whoah!!
but God is really good and the rain just stops when we reached the papaya river where we had our brunch:D
and right after, we took a relaxing bath on the river and underwater picture taking too.
all in all, our climb was awesome.. trekking on rainforest, hearing the sounds of monkeys, seeing peculiar birds and experiencing the element of water and wind is fantastic!
*unfortunately Kiko (Ph_Man) wasn't able to join our climb due to personal errands :(
some pics of our climb...

defUSED_bOi November 6th, 2008, 06:38 PM we had our climb last weekend @ Mt. Banahaw de Lucban in Quezon. - Oct.31 - Nov.2, 2008
we took a Greenstar bus in Buendia-Taft @ 8PM and arrived @ Sta.Cruz, Laguna @ around 11PM. then a jeepney going to Lucban, Quezon and arrived there past 12mn.
Day 0

http://photos-p.friendster.com/photos/03/53/3683530/1_644324705l.jpg
then we took an hour trek from the town to the ranger station/campsite.
we reached the ranger station by 2AM. took shots of gin/tanduay and vodka before going to sleep. and wasn't able to start our trek to the peak on the said itinerary because of hang overs of my companions.
Day 1
ranger station/campsite

http://photos-p.friendster.com/photos/03/53/3683530/1_202226368l.jpg
it was 3PM then when we started going down and because it took us 4hours to climb to the peak from the ranger station. it was clear to us that the darkness will fall before us getting back to the camp.
and it was 6PM when i and the guide i was with got lost in the middle of nowhere. i thought it was the ned for me that time. i almost cry but all i did was to call for help and thank God we were able to get back to our group after 30minutes.
Day 3
original plan on Day 3 is to trek down going to Majayjay, Laguna on the famous Taytay Falls. but due to lot of injuries of us because of the diffculty of the trail ( a lot of slides and fall.. including me). we have decided to abort our taytay falls sidetrip but just right after taking our brunch @ 10AM. we've decided to pursue our trek to Majayjay because the French guy who joined us in climbing wanted to see the falls and so we went down to Majayjay, Laguna from the ranger station but before we started preparing for our trek.
a familiar face arrived at the ranger station.

defUSED_bOi November 7th, 2008, 04:32 PM ^^
kaya mo yan..basta may motivation ka to do those things you really wanna do.
yeah.. sarap maghike sa anawangin. andun kami last september. the best! gusto ko umulet. kung trip ng mga sscers, we can organize a trip there. lam ko kent and oboi had already been there. diko lang alam kung sino pang sscers ang nakapunta na dun.
sa Apo, last holy week (march) kami umakyat.
maybe this nov.28-dec.1, it's either Pulag or Ugo kami.
and hopefully, pag punta ko sa sabah, malaysia next year.magkachance ako na maakyat ang mt. kinabalu:D
