The downtown partnership posted an update for the three new museums planned for downtown:

Downtown Tampa is preparing to grow its cultural amenities the next two years with the construction of three brand new facilities. The Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa Bay History Center and the Children’s Museum of Tampa will all begin construction very soon on their new facilities. Having new state-of-the-art venues is one thing, but to know that each new building will be considered “green” is just smart planning. Here’s the scoop as it was reported during the August 30th Tampa City Council meeting:

-The Tampa Museum of Art will be built next to Curtis Hixon Park near the Poe Parking Garage. It will be receiving its guaranteed maximum price from the developer at the end of November. Construction on the new facility will begin in February, 2008 with construction completing in the summer of 2009. The Tampa Museum of Art building will not be LEED certified, but will have elements included that will make it a “green” building such as a rooftop garden.

-The Tampa Bay History Center will be constructed along the Garrison Channel next to Chotanchobee/Fort Brooke Park. This building will be a LEED certified building. This means the building will be constructed with several sustainable elements keeping its impact on the surrounding environment down to a minimum. Museum officials look for their notice to proceed with construction to go out on Thursday (8/6). The building should be nearing completion in the fall of 2008 with a grand opening sometime in late 08/early 09.

-The Children’s Museum of Tampa will be constructed along the Poe Parking Garage next to Curtis Hixon Park close to Ashley Drive. This building will also contain many elements that make it a “green” building. Officials look to select their contractor in January or February with construction starting in the summer of 2008. The new facility should be complete in late 2009.

Hmm, only 1 of the 3 will be open in time for the Superbowl on 2/1/09.

^That's better than the historical average for Tampa.

I have to laugh at the "green" plan for the TMA. How can a spacious rooftop garden fit in with a bunch of crap pottery inside? :ohno:

I don't quite understand why many people here always do criticise the art museum. It may not have the biggest collection yet, but there are some nice pieces. The mentioned pottery is from ancient cultures and deserves a little more respect because it is of high cultural value. Also, the museum owns more art than it can display in the limited facilities.

All three should have been designed to be LEED certified, not just have elements that make them green. Way to fall short of the times. How many LEED buildings are there in Tampa? I know my firm is working on one...

^Completed? I'm not aware of any, although there is like a 3-4 story one U/C on Kennedy.

BTW: I brought the Tampa History Center thread back up and posted a neat article about the new facility. It looks like they're finally going to start building it.
