View Full Version : St. George's Retail Park

It occurred to me last time I was there that this could make a good location for a second shopping centre. There's a lot of space there that's just wasted on ground level car parking. I realise the surrounding area isn't one of the most salubrious, but then again, you wouldn't call the Meadows near Broadmarsh that either (laughs).

If you had a shopping centre at either end of Humberstone Gate and the Cultural and Leisure (if only) quarters to either side it would encourage traffic along Humberstone Gate, which would (hopefully) lead to the area gradually becoming more upmarket the way Bridlesmith Way in Nottingham has. Of course you'd need to relocate the bus interchange (which could be relocated to the area currently occupied by the smaller strip mall to the west of St. George's Way) and maybe the Highfields taxis as well.

I realise the dual carriageway and the road layout around the SGRP doesn't make it seem like a good location but, whilst the ringroad may be untouchable I don't see why the smaller roads have to be. The main problem is the access road which has to be crossed when coming from town, which can get quite busy on certain days (so much so that it can be quite a challenge to cross it). If there was a way to rationalise this (perhaps get rid of the mini roundabout) or get rid of it altogether.

There's an aerial view at google maps if anyone wants to have a look.

It makes sense. Even if the former international Hotel site and Glynn Webb/Stapes part were to be combined together they could suffice as a major retail/leisure area well?

Don't forget the location of the proposed new arts cinema is near there as well.

What would you do about the bus interchange? I'd like to keep it somewhere nearby to encourage people to use public transport, but not on Humberstone Gate as, quite frankly, it's a bloody nightmare.

Perhaps if it was diverted through Burton Street/Moreledge Street, with an interchange nearer the mercury offices than that could be a way of encouraging people to got there and walk to the places. Though this may not be very good for the frail or elderly - we could introduce free rickshaws to everywhere!

What is it with you and rickshaws? You're not Vietnamese by any chance? :tongue2:

Personally I'd want all traffic, including buses, removed from HG during business hours. I realise this would mean they'd have to use the ringroad rather than just driving through town, but that's what ring roads are supposed to be for, to relieve the pressure on city and town centres. Alternatively Charles Street could be made a bus and taxi only thoroughfare, thus providing a corridor linking the north and south of the city.

For the record I'm not Vietnamese.

I just think its an environmentlly friendly way of travelling short distances, and quite novel too:)

Note, I realise any bus corridor using Charles Street would have to cross Humberstone Gate, but at least it'd only be buses and not boy racers in their new VWs or whatever.

They'd only be crossing it and not parked up on it. HG, as you call it Mark76, and Charles Street must be some of the most polluted in the city centre, with all those buses.
