Penn Yan is the county seat of Yates County, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Penn Yan has a population of around 5,000, and sits near the northern tip of the eastern ranch of Keuka Lake.
The town's name is derived from the first settlers in thr area. When first settled, about half of the residents came from Pennsylvania and about half from New England. After debating on what to name the village, residents compromised by taking the first syllable of each group of people: Pennsylvanians and Yankees (New Englanders).
