View Full Version : The Wall - Mixed use - 11F - Hatfield, Pretoria
Jakes1 September 6th, 2007, 09:18 AM This one just kind off popped up unexpectantly. It is on Schoeman Street. Sold out as well, as far as I could tell.

Don't think we should expect terribly exciting designs. This is student accomodation afterall. And Costa's previous projects are bland, if not a bit kitch as well. But it is a sign of what is to come. This is close to the Station, accross from lovely Springbok Park. The height restriction in this area will be 20F, as far as I gathered from the Tswhane website.
Durbsboi September 6th, 2007, 09:21 AM Cant tell much about the design from the construction pics, but looks avg residential type thing, nothing fancy, So from what you say sounds spot on, cheap student flats.
Thanx for the pics Jakes
dysan1 September 6th, 2007, 09:23 AM what are the height of other buildings in its vicinity? If they are also in the same height range then it being bland is not the end of the world. however it is the tallest and bland then thats not good news.
Jakes1 September 6th, 2007, 09:33 AM This is one of the tallest buildings in Hatfield, but down the road The Fields will pass it soon. It stands out. However, many more of these are to follow in hatfield and colbyn. it will not stand alone for long. And these flats are priced at R600 000for 1 bedrooms, going up from there... It is predictable architecture, safe (I hope!). Nothing rah rah, lets just hope they don't add frilly touches and make it a rather lonely edifice to bad taste.
dysan1 September 6th, 2007, 12:46 PM ^^ yes if its simple and modern it will be great. but if it does have kitsch touches then ouch!

Well, I won't get my hopes up just yet. Costa's developers aren't really know for simple, classy designs. Many of their other buildings look like they never employed architects. Think facebrick, in a castle theme, complete with little green towers... This building looks like it will be simple though. I hope.
dysan1 September 6th, 2007, 02:29 PM designs that even a margate theme park would say is kitsch

Hey, this is pretoria. The home of faux tuscan! The block looks rather standard at this stage. lets keep our fingers crossed.
joburg September 6th, 2007, 07:31 PM Ag man you don't give Pretoria enough credit Jakes! I think Pretoria has just as much faux architecture as Durban, Cape Town and Joburg do.
The Wall is defo a welcome addition to Pretoria, and it will look good along Schoeman Street sitting amongst all the embassies and the Jacaranda trees.

Jakes1 February 28th, 2008, 12:54 PM I actually quite like it now that it is done. And more are to follow. It stands out like a lonely sentinel. The station is practically next door - and apparently we can expect quite a number of high-rises in this area. The new 12F Fields is just down the road.
joburg February 28th, 2008, 12:58 PM Yup! Looks good I think!
