now that all the buildings are gone, it's the first time you we can see the old commerzbank tower in its whole 'beauty'. the faster this project will go up the better. I hope they will demolish the old coba sometime and replace it with something nicer.

thanks for the update, tom.

^ Didn't they intend to refurbish the old Commerzbank and give it some shiny new cladding?
I remember reading that some time ago.

HD
April 8th, 2011, 09:22 PM
I'm not aware of any planned refurbishment project, but I guess it is more realistic, than demolition. the blank wall of K26 might be a little indicator, how a refurbished/newly built tower at the coba site might be positioned ...

construction has officially started, but in order to move this to the u/c forum work has to be more advanced than the current construction stage - according to the rules of ssc.

Status;
The foundation columns have been drilled and it's going really fast.

The design of the apartement tower has been changed significantly!
It looks much better now, clearer lines and was also heightened at least 15m, so i guess it should be around 75m. Compare it to the neighboring K26 Tower 75m tall. It looks even taller than K26 Tower :)

Like it very much now:

The small residential tower now almost has a classic Manhattan feeling to it. Love the setbacks.
Way better than this fashionized modernist thingy planned before indeed. It'd be perfect if they'd add a roofgarden with some restaurant/bar there.

nice to see that the facade has been changed. The older design was strange and not really their architecture language i think, i know because Mr. Kleine-Kraneburg was my professor. I wondered why they designed it that way. great news. Now some of my pics :

I really like the new design with the smaller residential tower having those setbacks. Neat reminder of Art Deco highrises. Frankfurt's great at building classical resemblances.

By the by, the big tower also got some changes during the re-design. The semibasement is now covered with a stone facade up to some floors and we also got some colonnades. Great move there, Tishman Speyer! This project is becoming better and better. What a win.

Nice to have this big construction site in the very heart of Frankfurt! :)

Now the foundation stone ceremony for TaunusTurm was held on January, 17th:
http://www.journal-frankfurt.de/?src=journal_news_einzel&rubrik=7&id=14992 (German)

And the official website (http://www.taunusturm.de) has added some great renders in a slide show, for instance:

great pic, thanks. the base looks quite massive indeed.

I really do hope, the old eurotower and the old coba tower get a major revamp after the completion of the new ecb tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=185988&page=29). they're so terribly date, imo.

Thx!
and we shouldn't forget, it's only the first half of the base for the tower, the south-east part of the highrise has not risen yet.
I'm pretty sure that both towers you mentioned will get a major renovation after the ECB has moved into their new tower. Though i hope a possible new fassade for the old ECB Tower will be Silver too. But a little bit more modern.
Concerning the old COBA Tower, the little brown one...i also hope that after a possible renovation the tower might look pretty much the same, it's one of the last highrises built in "International Style", it would be sad to loose this style in Frankfurt completly.

Also the 2nd part of the massive Base, located in the rear, started to rise:
