View Full Version : [Zagreb, Split, Hrvatska] - Pictures
Czas na Żywiec September 6th, 2007, 08:23 PM Well I finally got my pictures uploaded, hopefully it's okay to fuse both cities into one topic, I didn't really want to create two separate ones. Anyway, I had a fantastic time in Croatia. Really glad I decided to go and it was more than worthwhile. It wasn't as expensive as Italy yet had just as much to see, if not more. I actually had a better time in Croatia than I did in Italy. It's not such a huge surprise since at Croatia I did feel more at home. Albeit I don't speak the language, it was very easy getting around since I speak Polish. Just memorize a few basic words, fill it in with some Polish and I was set! :D People were really friendly and always willing to help, too. And it was nice not having to depend on English to get around (Unlike Italy), I really only used it when I needed to. So I'm definitely planning a trip back, maybe within a year or two. I only really had 2 days so I barely scratched the surface, but I'm glad I did it anyway because now I'll know for next time where to go and I won't feel like such a stranger. Anyway, on to the pictures!
Originally Zagreb wasn't supposed to be a stop, but my train from Ljubljana came in late about 20 minutes so I missed my next train. I had 4 hours until the next one so I figured it was a nice opportunity to walk around the city and see some of the capital. I'm so glad I did because it really would be a shame if I had skipped it. Very Centraleuropean feel, reminded me of Krakow actually.

Of course they had to have one of the towers covered in scaffolding but honestly, every city I went in Europe had some sort of remodeling projects going on. Beautiful church nonetheless!

And I love the whole placing the huge ad over a building while it's being renovated thing. They do the same exact thing in Poland.

The shot that reminds me of Krakow, especially with the blue colored tram.

Beautiful new trams!
As soon as I got back to the train station, I still had about 2 hours to go, but it started raining, so I decided to stay put. Glad I did because about 10 minutes later the rain got really bad and then the lightning and thunder came. I swear, I've never heard thunder so loud in my life as I did that day in Zagreb.
Oh and an additional comment about my train from Zagreb to Split, all I can say is WOW. Beautiful (unfortunately didn't think to take a picture) clean, very futuristic with the sliding glass doors lol. Much nicer than the trains I used in Italy/Slovenia. I remember people here telling me to switch over to a bus when in Zagreb, but I had already bought my ticket in Ljubljana for the train cause the lady told me it was the easiest way to get down there. I was skeptical at first, but so glad I decided to take it and ignore the advice of some people here. (no offense :p)
Coming up next, Split!
Czas na Żywiec September 6th, 2007, 08:24 PM So like I said in my previous post, the train ride was amazing. It was still raining on and off but the 5 1/2 hours passed by really quickly, mostly due to the beautiful landscape to look at. :)

And the descent into Split was breathtaking. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures because it was already dark when I got in. The train was really bright on the inside and also, I was already packing up my things to get ready and get to run to my hostel because it was almost 10PM. I got a great room, in an old building behind the old fish market on Marmontova, right next to the Konzum (which was sooo convienient you have no idea lol) Then the next day I had all day to walk around the city, really love the waterfront. Very nice to see stone tiles instead of the usual cobblestone streets like in other parts of Europe, it gave it a real beachy feel.

After I left, it started to rain ( :ohno: ) but I didn't mind too much, it gave me a chance to take a quick nap and eat something. Then decided to go up to less touristy part of the city (I really wanted to check out the Hajduk Stadium) and snapped some pics.

Awesome model of the city. It was so hard to snap a pic because there were so many people crowding it haha.
I then walked down to the southernmost pier in the bay because it extended pretty far into the sea and gave me some excellent views of the whole city.

All in all I have an amazing time. If if hadn't rain, I would have spent more time on the beach, but oh well, I still had a great time nonetheless. Just walking around the old city was more than worth it. At least I left in style!

Astralis September 6th, 2007, 08:39 PM Wow  . These are some amazing pictures you took in Zagreb and Split. Too bad you didn't stay longer but the bottom line is, as I said earlier when you asked about places to visit if you remember, that you weren't dissapointed about visiting Croatia. BTW you won't be dissapointed no matter how many times you come in our country. I assure you ;).

antenor September 8th, 2007, 01:39 PM haha:D, nah, the most probable explanation is that gypsies stripped the copper off:lol:.. :jk: it's in a kinda obscure corner of the square np, just thought I'd mention it:cheers:

Milan Luka January 10th, 2008, 11:59 AM Thank you for the photos. I shouldnt view these, make me homesick. Malo sam tužan. So glad we can travel so much easier nowadays. Split waterfront looks so different now. I remember the problems when the upgrade was announced.
Zanovijetalo January 10th, 2008, 12:07 PM There are still problems, locals dont like it for some reason. Well some of them, but those are very loud, nimbys always are.

Zanovijetalo January 10th, 2008, 12:33 PM I LOVE it, and think thats the best public space in todays Croatia.
Than again, I'm not a Split personality and have no emotional attach to that riva whatsoever.

Where are you now? It's the same with me bro, I terribly miss the country. I was hoping to come back this summer but unfortunatley will not be able to until at least summer 2009.
Kampflamm January 3rd, 2009, 12:08 AM Great thread. Is this some kind of bigger city park? I remember seeing some other pics of Zagreb with this kind of greenery and the surrounding buildings all looked amazing.
