Grand, but the base is too massive. Setbacks please!

Some info on the building that might clear up the reasoning for some aspects of its design:

1. The massive base- the Jeweler's Building used to have vehicular elevators, that would carry armoured cars containing millions of dollars worth of precious stones up to the jeweler's offices above. There were also large trading floors. These two factors meant that the footprint of the lower floors had to be huge.

2. The cupolas on the roof- these cupolas actually contain water towers, which were necessary on the roofs of buildings at the time to maintain adequate water pressure. Rather than leave ugly steel cylinders exposed on the roof, the architects built them into cupolas.

- 35 E. Wacker is now home to the headquarters of the architectural firm Murphy/Jahn (Helmut Jahn's firm).

A lot of nice Beaux Arts style details but the proprotions between the base and the tower are not ideal IMO. Still the building added a lot to the pre-modern Chicago skyline.

Old, classic, and relatively tall for its age. But it could use some work, and the roof and main section do not come together well.

Don't know what some of you are talking about. Yes, the setback proportions are different from what would later be considered "standard" in the art deco towers developed in NYC (and copied in Chicago) to maximize profits while complying with strict NYC zoning laws. But this is not an art deco tower. I think the massing and proportions of the decorative elements are spectacular and just right. It's an absolute stunner in that setting along the river on a sunny late afternoon when the details pop. I wouldn't change a thing.
