globill September 7th, 2007, 03:27 PM Just wanted to give a shout out for an amazing photo thread from Grand Rapids.

Stunning, every Midwesterner should check it out.
IndiexInxIndy September 8th, 2007, 03:39 AM Our JW looks like SHIT compared to yours! Tell me, how did it look in it's rendering? :ohno: :bash: :ohno:
DetKing111 September 8th, 2007, 05:21 AM why all these grand rapids threads and not many Detroit ones. detroit is by far better than grand rapids in everything. when you think of midwest cities the first ones are these, Chicago, Detroit , Indianapolis, Cleveland. mainly chicago and detroit.
Michi September 9th, 2007, 12:19 AM What?
Indie, the renderings were pretty accurate.

IndiexInxIndy September 9th, 2007, 12:22 AM That makes me pretty shitty that our soon-to-be-built JW which i believe is taller, sorely lacks in design compared to yours! Congrats for your design anyway... :ohno:
Michi September 9th, 2007, 12:51 AM I'm sure it will be fine. Indy has a nice skyine and hey, look on the bright side...you get a quality hotel even if the design isn't quite up to the standard of an informed critic.
I tried googling a photo of it and only came across a big/boxy glass building. Is that the one planned for the convention center area? None of the google results produced a rendering.
If it makes you feel better, Grand Rapids needs to start parting from its over use of blue glass on its highrises, eventhough the buildings themselves are attractive. Time to spice up the skyline with future projects. :)
IndiexInxIndy September 9th, 2007, 01:10 AM http://64.255.242.152/portals/6/plines/marriott2_big.jpg (The best view i believe)
http://64.255.242.152/portals/6/plines/marriott3_big.jpg (Shows our over abundance of parking as well as where the possible green roof on top would be)
So as you can see... it's really lacking! HOWEVER, it is slight better than the rendering you saw...
cityfan September 9th, 2007, 07:24 AM Wow, I'm impressed. I had no idea Grand Rapids was that urban! I definately want to check it out sometime.
I love this shot. It looks like a mugging waiting to happen:

lol, actually the people on the other side were all concerned when I passed them on my bike in the tunnel and warned me to watch out because there was a bunch of glass on the ground. It was lit too.
Grand Rapids has a very small skyline, but makes up for it in urbanity. For a city of only 200,000 it is surprisingly very sophisticated and progressive. It's cityscape is very successful and proper. :)
hudkina September 10th, 2007, 07:36 AM Grand Rapids was a relatively large American city even 100 years ago.
In 1870 it debuted in the 100 largest cities in the U.S. with about 17,000 people (#88) In comparison Columbus (#42) had about 30,000 and Indianapolis (#27) had just under 50,000.
By 1910 it had nearly 115,000 people putting it at #44 on the list.
IndiexInxIndy September 11th, 2007, 09:51 PM So what do others think? Is it agreed the JWub in Grand Rapids is better lookin?
