Redefining local rock music (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideEntertainment.htm?f=2010/february/24/entertainment2.isx&d=2010/february/24)

by Nickie Wang
Contributor

Call it loud, call it noisy, or call it whatever you like, because no matter how you label it, rock music is here to stay. It’s no longer necessary to check the pop charts if there are any songs from rock bands landed on the list, the thing is, it’s not the only way to determine whether rock music is thriving and if it is in perfect shape.

With the use of musical instruments, creative lyrics, and some visually arousing performances, music can create something more than just an experience. In most part of the world, people no longer treat music as just a form of entertainment, it’s already part of their lifestyle. As a powerful medium of communication it triggers powerful emotions that are enmeshed in everybody’s experiences.

Seeing people in black shirt, trucker hat, black nail polish, skinny jeans, and skater shoes are not the main indication of the prevalence of rock music in the country. But seeing a multitude of people clad in this very same fashion in one same venue is a whole different story, just like the recent Muziklaban event.

“Rakistas” trooped to the open parking lot of Metrowalk in Ortigas, Pasig City to witness the grand reunion of some of the country’s biggest names in the world of local rock ‘n roll.

Muziklaban, an annual search for the country’s promising rock bands has evolved from just a band search into a completely grand rock music event where every “rakista” has something else to enjoy apart from seeing their favorite bands perform. And that gives us an idea how events like this gradually shape the future of rock music in the Philippines .

Defining how vibrant rock music is today, Muziklaban ended on a high note with a grand gathering of the biggest names on the rock music scene and a showdown of amateur bands. Overflowing beer, loud and head banging music, edgy personalities, interesting sights and booths, and everything that is associated with rock music were present at the grand finals of the much-anticipated affair.

This year’s theme “Iba na ang Labanan,” lived up to the expectations of every person who attended the day-long occasion. Aside from its tradition of discovering the country’s most promising and talented amateur bands, it also included the Art of Tattoo, Popular Extreme Sports and Independent Film Making in the roster of activities. They were represented through lifestyle hubs put up around the venue. There were also some installations that chronicled the significant events that took place throughout the eight-month search of the best local band.

Some of the show’s highlights were the explosive performances of prominent bands like Slapshock, Kamikazee, Greyhoundz, Radioactive Sago Project, Kjwan, Intolerant, Kapatid, and rock music legend, Pepe Smith.

The much-awaited event sponsored by the country’s iconic malt drink Red Horse Beer is almost a year-round affair for rock music aficionados. It was officially launched in May last year through a media extreme sports challenge held in San Miguel training camp in Tagaytay and stretches up to the last day of January.

Winning the bragging rights for outshining other amateur bands in this year’s competition was a group from Valenzuela City called Hatankaru. It went home as this year’s grand winner and walking passed other rock bands with two other special awards namely, Best Live Act and the Breakthrough Performance Award. Apart from a P500,000 cash prize, the quartet went home with a record deal as well. Other finalists were Kukumban from Naga City, 2nd Squad from Baguio, Cambronero from Bacolod, and Hoodswhite from Cagayan de Oro City.

The bands that made the whole event even more electrifying were Kadangyan, Zach Lucero and the Action Pack, Kapatid, Franco, Typecast, Music Hero, Chongkeys, Dogfight, Boy Elroy and COG. Also present to entertain thousands of fans were Muziklaban former champions Mayonaise (2005), HardboiledEggz (2006), Gayuma (2007), and Even (2008).

As a sign that the event is much bigger and actually a much-awaited music festival, fanatics event started queuing at the entrance as early as 12 noon, but the program didn’t really started until it was 4:30 p.m. The program proper started when the sun went down and the real atmosphere of rock music filled the air. As expected the program ended at 4 a.m. with everyone looking forward to the next year’s another explosive rendezvous of rock music personalities and supporters.

GMA Network upbeat on P2.8-billion income goal (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=552315&publicationSubCategoryId=66)

By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes (The Philippine Star)
Updated February 24, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - GMA Network Inc. is confident that it can meet its consolidated P2.8-billion net income guidance number for 2009, a 19- percent growth compared to its bottom line in the previous year.

GMA executive vice president and chief operating officer Gilberto Duavit Jr. also told The STAR that early indications show that the company’s international business will post a revenue growth of 50 percent by end-December 2009 as against 2008.

While refusing to disclose their 2009 consolidated revenue numbers which are still being finalized, Duavit said “they are very good.”

The consolidated numbers as well as that of the parent GMA Network basically mirror each other, except for very small discrepancies brought about by a few subsidiaries which contribute very little to the topline and bottom line.

In terms of subscriber growth, its international channel Pinoy TV will be posting a 16 percent increase while Life TV will likely report a 141 percent higher uptake. Life TV was launched only in 2008.

Duavit said that growth in Pinoy TV’s subscriber base and revenues is largely due to additional platforms like IPTV and satellite television in addition to cable TV. Pinoy TV is GMA’s broad audience program channel in the international market, while Life TV is a niche channel, catering largely to the female audience.

As of end-2009, Pinoy TV registered a subscriber base of 235,587 while Life TV had 107,496.

This year, Duavit revealed that GMA’s international business will be launching separate playlists for Europe and the Middle East. “Before we only had one for the United States, and another for Asia Pacific and the rest of the world,” he said.

Duavit, who is the chairman of the board of GMA Worldwide and GMA Network Films and president of publicly listed GMA Holdings, disclosed that they expect revenues for the international business to break the P1-billion mark. The international business accounted for more than 13 percent of the net income of GMA in 2009.

In terms of capital expenditure, GMA is spending around P450 million this year plus another P322 million carried over last year. Duavit said this year’s capex is distributed across all links of the value chain up to transmission.

The amount includes upgrades in their studio and field facilities, plus the upgrade of 10 secondary market transmitters.

The company is also investing on the content management side, including the installation of state-of-the-art media asset management and news automation systems.

As for January and February this year, Duavit said GMA is doing well in terms of advertising revenues, contrary to the previous years where the first few months of the year are the so-called lean months in terms of ad spend.

Earlier, company chairman and president Felipe Gozon said parent company GMA Network will likely exceed its P2.8-billion net income target for 2009, largely due to increased advertising revenues as well as the general improvement in the economy.

Gozon said that they have already achieved the P2.8-billion net income target for the parent company as of end-November. “This year will be very good, more than what we expected,” he said.

He noted that while advertisers generally held off spending during the first semester because of the global financial crisis, “they came back to market in the second half of 2009.”

Gozon also revealed that while the fourth quarter has been traditionally a lean period in terms of ad spend, this year has been different. “Now everyone seems to be more optimistic. The economy also started to recover in the second half,” he added.

Gozon said that he expects improvement in the economy as well as the increased ad spend to continue this year. “In terms of top line and bottom line, we expect 2010 to be much better than 2009,” he pointed out.

GMA’s chief executive also revealed that they expect to exceed their target of P11 to P12 billion in revenues this year.

GMA’s Channel 7 continues to be the top money maker for the company, followed by the international business. Gozon said that as of end-November, they had 266,000 international subscribers, with the United States as the largest market.

The company finished the first nine months of 2009 with a 10-percent increase in net income versus 2008.

The company’s net income jumped to P2.15 billion from the P1.96 billion made in the same period in 2008.

Gross revenues for the first nine months went up by seven percent to P10.02 billion. Airtime revenues from TV and radio contributed P9.24 billion, while subscription fees from international operations and other revenue-generating activities of subsidiaries made P782 million.

Total operating expenses were kept to a single-digit growth of nine percent to P5.55 billion. Production costs increased by two percent year-on-year to P2.92 billion.

Nine-month earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) settled at P3.71 billion.

Subscription revenues for GMA International jumped 54 percent over last year. Officials pointed out that the steady growth in the subscriber count of GMA’s two international channels – GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV) and GMA Life TV (GLTV) compelled the revenue upswing for GMA International. Both channels are now available in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and many other countries to cater to the international audience.

GPTV subscribers totaled 225,000 by the end of the third quarter, or a 17 percent increase year-on-year. The channel has an estimated 1.1 million viewers worldwide. GLTV subscribers are now at 109,000 or around 600,000 viewers worldwide. GLTV has grown by 142 percent in terms of subscriber count since last year.

GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), meanwhile, has syndicated locally made programs to as far as Africa, Middle East, and Europe. GWI had a positive revenue contribution with P28.3 million worth of syndication sales in the third quarter, equivalent to 90 percent of its total projected revenues for 2009.

Just recently, GWI sold the rights of the Philippine adaptation of Marimar and Dyesebel to countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Singapore, and Malaysia.

GMA Radio’s DZBB remained ahead of DZRH in Mega Manila according to the third quarter survey conducted by Nielsen. In Cebu, both the FM and AM radio stations of GMA ranked second overall.

The network continues its regional expansion to strengthen signal coverage in key provinces. The new five-KW TV Relay in Mt. Amuyao, Mt. Province which airs in Channel 5 was activated last Oct. 12. Transmitters and antenna systems for TV-10 Sto. Tomas, Benguet, TV-12 Cagayan de Oro, TV-7 Naga City, and TV-12 Mt. Banoy, Batangas were likewise upgraded.

In terms of advertising minutes, it declined by 6.6 percent in the third quarter versus the same period in 2008 as total industry advertising minutes among free-to-air TV channels went down by 5.8 percent. ABS-CBN, on the other hand, experienced a double-digit slump of 16.6 percent compared to last year, GMA pointed out.

Also during the first nine months of the year, the industry had a 1.5-percent decrease in advertising minutes with GMA down by only 2.1 percent compared to ABS-CBN’s 14.8- percent decrease, it added.

FYI: 3 new gasoline stations on the rise along Roxas Avenue.

Kev..do we have Mcdo branch at LCC???
1. Mcdo Bichara
2. Mcdo Plaza
3. Mcdo @ SM
4. Mcdo @ LCC
5. Mcdo Diversion Road

5 Naga Mcdo branches :banana::banana::banana::banana:

The present McDo stores in Naga are as follows
1. Mcdo Bichara
2. Mcdo Plaza
3. Mcdo @ SM
4. Mcdo @ Emall
5. Mcdo To Go at Magsaysay

I also heard about the McDo in Diversion corner Almeda, if true it would be the sixth McDonald's store in Naga or the 4th full service McDo restaurant and the first McDonald Drive thru in the city.

The present McDo stores in Naga are as follows
1. Mcdo Bichara
2. Mcdo Plaza
3. Mcdo @ SM
4. Mcdo @ Emall
5. Mcdo To Go at Magsaysay

I also heard about the McDo in Diversion corner Almeda, if true it would be the sixth McDonald's store in Naga or the 4th full service McDo restaurant and the first McDonald Drive thru in the city.

and the first Gas station with one of the leading fast food chains in the country. exciting! parang nsang nlex or slex na tau. sana 24 hour service.
if so, for sure magiging tambayan yan kapag gabi. hehe

4th branch of McDonalds Naga soon to rise at the corner of Roxas Avenue (Diversion Road) and Almeda Highway

This is another positive development in that area.

If you will observe, vast tracts of land along both sides of diversion are vacant. The owners of these lands are very much capable of putting up or pulling in huge investments on their properties and at the right time they will do just that. We have been waiting for that and it seems it will be happening very soon. A plaza anchored by gasoline station similar to that along the superhighways is very ideal. The place is very strategic for such investment.:)

I had a number of good shirts then by Giringgiting. My favorite was a green one with Si Nanay si Tatay lyrics. I would usually visit their shop at Galeria when I have extra money for some good shirts or caps for ready give aways when I travel. I did not know that they closed shop already. I hope they can make a come back since their products are needed by the booming tourism industry in the region particularly Cam Sur.:)

at one point Giringgiting relocated to Paz cor Elias Angeles. last fiesta, Giringgiting shirts were sold at the holy rosary minor seminary shops. i thought that was a sign of a revival.

i had the Si Nanay, Si Tatay shirt, too. one of the earliest designs they put out was the natong (gabi). shirsts came even in XXXL so even foreign tourists can find their sizes.

speaking of St. Jo, the Arch is ready for the 50th Foundation Celebration!
i'm excited to watch. nostalgic tlga, i can still remember kapag foundation day todo practice, all levels has to perform sa quadrangle. and it always happens twice, una dress rehearsal (people can take pics while students are dancing sa gitna) pero ung final day na very formal na ang dating. i wonder if it's still this way sa ngaun? hehe

so it was in our own days. tradition indeed is well-kept at St Jo. i won't be surprised if the dress rehearsal and final presentation are still done this way.

remember how even the Traslacion procession is 'rehearsed' in school?!

naga has the appetite and the pocket for these and more. a developed diversion road (or roxas ave) is a perfect connection to the lively strip that is magsaysay.

Aside from having McDo and most likely other restos, I hope the façade is architecturally sound.:D

Could the area be home to Starbucks' second branch in Naga? (Ambisyoso, dai pa ngani nag-oopen ang Starbucks sa Magsaysay.:D) How about the first Pancake House there? Or maybe the first Gloria Jeans?:cheers::cheers:

Agree. Mahilig magkakan ang mga Nagueño kaya man normally before venturing out to other cities/localities in Bicol, companies start putting up branches in Naga first. It's sort of a jumping point or a gateway for restos and fast-food companies in Bicol.

One municipality converted into a city, sixteen municipalities
reverted back to being cities and two barangays created
in the 4th Quarter of 2009
(PR-201002-PP2-01, Posted 23 February 2010)

Seventeen new cities and two new barangays were added in the Philippine Standard Geographic Code masterlist during the last quarter of 2009. In summary, the following are the changes in the PSGC masterlist for the 4th Quarter 2009:

I. Conversion of the Municipality of Dasmariñas in the Province of Cavite in Region IV-A (CALABARZON) into a Component City pursuant to Republic Act No. 9723 and which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on November 25, 2009.

II. On December 21, 2009, the Supreme Court, with a majority vote of 6 to 4, reversed and set aside its November 18, 2008 decision and declared as constitutional the cityhood laws converting the 16 municipalities to cities. This ruling was a reversal of the earlier decision of the Supreme Court that turned them back to municipalities under Entry of Judgment of General Record (G.R.) Nos. 176951 and 177499 which became final and executory on May 21, 2009 as stated in COMELEC Memorandum dated June 3, 2009. The 16 new cities are as follows:
PSGC
Municipality Reverted as City
Province/Region

1 012805000 BATAC Ilocos Norte, Reg. I
2 045647000 TAYABAS Quezon, Reg. IV-A
3 072211000 BOGO Cebu, Reg. VII
4 072214000 CARCAR Cebu, Reg. VII
5 072234000 NAGA Cebu, Reg. VII
6 074611000 GUIHULNGAN Negros Oriental, Reg. VII
7 083708000 BAYBAY Leyte, Reg. VIII
8 086005000 CATBALOGAN Samar (Western Samar), Reg. VIII
9 082604000 BORONGAN Eastern Samar, Reg. VIII
10 104307000 EL SALVADOR Misamis Oriental, Reg. X
11 112509000 MATI Davao Oriental, Reg. XI
12 143213000 TABUK Kalinga, CAR
13 150702000 LAMITAN Basilan, ARMM
14 160203000 CABADBARAN Agusan del Norte, Caraga
15 160301000 BAYUGAN Agusan del Sur, Caraga
16 166819000 TANDAG Surigao del Sur, Caraga

Note: Change from municipality status into a city will not affect and will retain the present municipality code.

The exemption accorded the 16 municipalities is based on the fact that each had pending cityhood bills long before the enactment of RA 9009 that substantially distinguished them from other municipalities aiming for cityhood. On top of this, each of the 16 municipalities also met the PhP 20 million income level exacted under the original provisions of Sec. 450 of the 1991 Local Government Code. (GR No. 176951).

III. Two newly-created barangays, Barangay Macalag (PSGC-153835010) and Barangay Tuntungan (PSGC- 153835011) shall be included in the Municipality of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, in the province of Maguindanao pursuant to Muslim Mindanao Autonomy (MMA) Act No. 220 and which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on July 30, 2009.

The number of cities increased from 120 cities as of September 2009 to 137 cities as of December 2009 while the number of barangays increased from 42,021 in September 2009 to 42,023 in December 2009. Subsequently, the number of municipalities decreased during the period from 1,514 to 1,497. With these updates, the latest number of regions, provinces, cities, municipalities, and barangays as of December 31, 2009 are as follows:

December 31, 2009 September 30, 2009

Regions 17 17
Provinces 80 80
Cities 137 120
Municipalities 1,497 1,514
Barangays 42,023 42,021

Since there are now two Naga Cities in the Philippines, I've read in an article a year back that Naga City-Bicol will be addressed as Naga City the Heart of Bicol... or just the Heart of Bicol... in order to avoid confusion... I don't have the article now, if someone can retrieve it... it would be really helpful... The article was published before the Supreme court made its reversal on its decision to revert the cities into municipalities last September 2009.. which was again reversed in December of 2009...

Movie Project for Ina 300
Submitted by voxbikol on Sat, 20/02/2010 - 07:24

Fr. Andrew G. Recepcion S.Th.D
Saturday, February 20th, 2010

God's Global Household
It is with gratitude to God that the movie-project is finally set to start shooting this coming March 3, 2010. The movie is written and directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, a multi-awarded film maker and director. Lead roles will be played by Judy Ann Santos, Ryan Agoncillo, Marvin Agustin, Christopher de Leon, Vivian Velez, and a boy-a newcomer in the industry-who could be a new Santino in the making. The movie is expected to be finished before the celebration of the tercentenary in September. The producer of the movie, our very own Bikolano film maker and producer, Tony Gloria, of the UNITEL Production known for socially relevant movies, hopes to include the movie in this year's entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) on December.

The Archbishop of Caceres, Leonardo Z. Legaspi, has proposed to a group of investors from Bikol particularly from Naga City, to help in financing the movie. The businessmen were presented with the proposal that the money is not a donation but an investment on the project that is expected to generate enough support and patronage thus paying off, at least the principal, given by each investor. It is with much hope that with a world-class director and power cast, the movie will share the devotion to all Filipinos and devotees of Ina in the Philippines and in other parts of the world.

The Peñafrancia Association of Bikolanos in Metro Manila has also contributed to the movie project. It has been the association's enthusiasm and persistence that found the ways and means to piece together the various

Contrary to the expectation that the movie will be like a documentary film or an epoch film, it will be a commercial movie with an interesting storyline woven by complex relationships set in the context of a religious experience of a devotee of Ina whose family traces its roots in Bikol. Moviegoers can expect not only entertainment but also an interesting presentation of the devotion in a way that even those who have no previous knowledge and experience of the popular devotion can appreciate its significance in the life of Filipino.

The actors with lead roles have started the workshop under Marilou Diaz-Abaya. It is heartwarming to receive a text message from director Marilou saying how the presence of Ina is very much felt during the workshops.

The movie will not only be shown in the Philippines but also in the United States, Australia, Europe and some Asian countries where the devotion to Ina is widespread. The Peñafrancia Associations in all the continents will be asked to support the movie.

It is with anticipation that we await the completion of the movie because of the possibility to share the gift of devotion to Ina to all Filipinos in the Philippines and in other countries.

The movie project took a while before it could start because of some unforeseen difficulties and some obstacles along the way. The powerful intercession of Ina, however, has made it possible for the realization of the movie. It is a gift from God, indeed, that for the first time in 300 years, a movie dedicated to Ina is now in the offing.

France grants P9.4-B loan assistance for LGUs

BY LLANESCA T. PANTI Reporter

For the first time in its history, the France-based bilateral development finance institution Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) has earmarked 150 million euros or 9.4 billion pesos loan assistance for the local government units in the Philippines, the Embassy of France in Manila reported Tuesday.

This developed after AFD Director for Asia Department Martha Stein-Sochas, Finance Secretary Margarito Teves and France’s Ambassador to the Philippines Thierry Borja de Mozota signed an agreement for the Local Government Financing and Budget Reform Program, Subprogram-2.

The program aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of basic social services to residents by increasing fiscal resources and financing option for local government units (LGUs).

The program allows the LGUs to enhance their capacities to plan and budget for the general welfare of their constituent communities in a transparent and accountable way.

As such, the initiative focuses on intergovernmental fiscal relations, fiscal management, planning and public expenditure management, performance measurement and service delivery in credit financing and local own-source revenues.

Also, the project is expected to reduce local government’s dependency on Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

Moreover, a technical assistance grant of 300,000 euros will also be provided by AFD to the government for the improvement of local revenues for environmental public services and in preparation of local urban planning integrating environmental issues.

Under Philippine laws, the proportions of LGUs in the IRA are 23 percent for provinces, 23 percent for cities, 34 percent for municipalities and 20 percent for barangays. Furthermore, the respective shares of these LGUs will be determined by the following: population (50 percent), land area (25 percent); and equal share (25 percent).

The Philippines is composed of 81 provinces, 136 cities, and 1,495 municipalities. As of 2009, the total IRA for LGUs is pegged at 250 billion pesos.

In a related development, six Philippine cities finished implementing a two-year counter-corruption reform program with the Asia Foundation dubbed as Localizing Counter Corruption Project.

The said is supported by the British Embassy in Manila, and was conceived after a series of enterprise surveys showed that business owners experience corruption in local governments where they process operating permits.

As a result, cities of Calapan, Iriga and Roxas implemented reforms in real property tax administration, while Sorsogon City focused on reforming the management of its public market.

Santiago City, for its part, improved its business permit and licensing system, while Tacloban City reformed the offices under the City Mayor’s Office.

Additional, the abovementioned cities implemented the eight-month Public Service Excellence, Ethics and Accountability Program, which promotes transparency in service delivery, strengthens the accountability of local bureaucrats and encourages customer-oriented culture in the delivery of basic services.

Steven Rood, country representative of the Asia Foundation, disclosed that the cities taking part in the program are those who are willing to open their books and are committed to provide their own resources to boost the project.

“We want the LGUs to work with business community and civil society in fostering transparent and accountable governance because the cities are the engine for growth and competitiveness,” Rood told reporters.

SSS loan collections reach P2.62-B in Luzon
(http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=2&rid=260960)
NAGA CITY, Feb. 25 (PNA) -- The Social Security System (SSS) collected P2.6 billion in salary loans payments in Luzon last year, which was 13 percent or P300 million more than the P2.3 billion it collected in 2008, a top official said.

SSS executive vice president Horacio Templo said P1.4 billion or over half of the total was collected through the pension fund’s Cluster Office in San Pablo, Laguna, which covers members from the Southern Tagalog region.

"Figures show double-digit increases in salary loan collections in all of our four cluster offices in Luzon, which are located in Baguio, Tarlac, San Pablo and Naga," Templo said.

SSS cluster offices in Baguio and Naga both posted increases of 20 percent in salary loan collection with P312.7 million and P159 million, respectively. Collections under SSS San Pablo rose 10 percent to P1.4 billion in 2009, which was P126 million more than the previous year.

SSS Tarlac, the center of SSS operations in Central Luzon, collected loan repayments amounting to P719 million, which was 15 percent or P91.9 million more than its P627.1 million collection in 2008.

"We are consolidating our contribution and loan collection systems to enhance our monitoring of employers’ payments," Templo said. "We also plan an integrated billing system for contributions and loans to make it easy for companies, especially those with delinquent accounts, to be informed of their payment obligations."

The SSS grants salary loans to members with at least six posted contributions within the last 12 months prior to the month of filing their application. Members must have at least 36 contributions to avail of a one-month salary loan and those with a minimum of 72 contributions can apply for a two-month salary loan.

Templo urged employers to avail of an ongoing program that would condone penalties of overdue contributions to allow workers to regain their eligibility for SSS loans and benefits. The six-month program would end on July 31. (PNA)

SSS collections in Bicol jump 22 percent to P986-M (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=2&rid=260935)

NAGA CITY, Feb. 25 (PNA) -- The Social Security System (SSS) collected P986.5 million of contributions of members in the Bicol Region last year, which was up 22 percent from the P807.2 million collections in 2008, a ranking official said.

SSS executive vice president Horacio Templo said the collections exceeded the institution’s 2009 target of P967 million by more than P19 million.

"The growth in collections reflects the continuing trust of members in the SSS," Templo said.

Top SSS officials and branch managers from Luzon gathered in Naga City for the annual performance review and presentation of plans and programs of the SSS Luzon Group at the Avenue Convention Hall along Magsaysay Avenue on February 23-24. Albay Governor Joey Salceda and Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo also attended the program.

Naga City is home of the Fund’s Bicol Cluster Office, the nerve-center of SSS operations in the region. The SSS has Luzon cluster offices in the cities of Naga, Baguio, Tarlac and San Pablo in Laguna province.

Templo said collections in Bicol were bolstered by the 12 percent increase in over-the-counter payments at SSS branch tellers, which grew from P570.8 million in 2008 to P640.8 million last year.

"Contribution collections of branches from employers in Bicol rose 15 percent to P419.9 million. Our collections from self-employed and voluntary members also grew by eight percent last year, totaling P220.9 million," he said.

The SSS has about 45,600 registered employers and 765,000 members in the Bicol Region, nearly 313,000 of them self-employed and informal sector workers such as farmers and fishermen. (PNA)
