DoT bolsters drive to promote tourism

By JACKY LYNNE A. OIGA
March 1, 2010, 5:47pm
Manila bulletin

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has further reinforced its technical assessment of tourism traffic in the country to capture the aggregate and accurate state of tourism and its contribution to the economy in its overall objective of further promoting tourism in the country.

“We have expanded our assessment to include a more systematic and in-depth analysis of top destinations to provide a clearer insight on the tourism movements throughout the country.

Understanding these movements allows us to create strategies to further support the development of these destinations. This system also creates awareness for these places in the national level,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

Top destinations are referred to as those that have at least 100,000 foreign tourists annually and have received substantial tourism-related investments. Since its adoption in 2008, the new system has propelled several previously unknown local sites to the main tourism circuit, such as Camarines Sur, which enjoyed a 117.25 percent growth in foreign and domestic arrivals in 2009.

Durano said the enhanced system also aims to empower local government units (LGUs) to gather information and generate ideas for tourism development in their area.

“The DoT has actively engaged in a campaign, with the help of Japan, to train local officers in monitoring tourism traffic in their respective destinations.

Empowering them builds up their capacity to create policies and strategies to stimulate tourism and boost livelihood in their areas,” explained Durano.

Since 2006, the DoT has maintained a partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a statistical capacity building program in the local government level. The ongoing campaign, called the DoT-JICA Technical Cooperation Program Management (TCPM), taps more than 100 LGUs to standardize their data collection methodology, which is used to analyze tourism information culled from hotels, resorts and other tourism accommodations in their areas.

The campaign capitalizes on the more attuned perception of locals for mining information about their sites. It also generates consciousness among community members, from the top to the grassroots, to manage their own destination and help promote it.

DoT’s new documentation process has also started integrating data collected from the newly-released arrival/departure cards (A/D). Bearing more detailed information on passengers, the new A/D cards include questions on Type of Accommodation, Education/ Training, Official Mission, Religion/ Pilgrimage, Health, and Transit.

“These innovations are logical and necessary if we want to keep up with the ever- changing market trends. With this detailed breakdown and analysis of data, the tourism industry is able to respond to needs, create demand and serve our foreign and local tourists. All these lead to a more robust tourism industry which translates to more jobs for Filipinos,” Durano said.

I wonder if SM Management is keeping tabs of the buying power of the Rinconada folks. Maybe there is room for another SM!!!

As i know from them, SM already had properties/ lots in every provinces like Albay- Legaspi, Catanduanes-Virac, Sorsogon City and Daet for the plan to develop Hyper-Mart . The question is when are they going to start.. We really don't know. SM City Naga is intended for the whole Bicol region, SM Naga will expand but will no longer branch out in other towns/ city in the province.

Is this true, only 3% of SM customers are accounted for by Naguenos? It might be hard to believe.

Yes, the annual report is only for SM Department store. But i think if there is a survey for groceries, Food court and "high- end" stores, Naguenos will probably be on top consumer in this field.

bobbymay74

I think they do.

As tenants, the SM Prime keeps us updated of their marketing promos, activities, future plans, and target clients and costumers.

I've also noticed that people from Rinconada dstrict have higher purchasing power. Most of our clients form Rinconada in Endolab are Tricare members and dependents.

I get paid for their consultations and laboratory exams by Tricare US administered by Wisconsin Physician Insurance Corporation. Even medications are provided for free just like in the US.

This makes their pruchamising power higher.

Kaya lang with that statistics, it there is an SM in Iriga, baka wala nag tao sa SM City Naga:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I think it's true.

Even before SM days, it has been noted that Naguenos are very prudent.

Most of the Bank Managers would tell us then- there are more depositors in Naga City that in any other parts in Bicol and that explains the proliferation of banks in the city.

Mababa daw and withdrawal rates sa Naga.:lol::lol:

1. Exactly..that's what SM report has noted the very big source for Rinconada's buying power are people working abroad as US Navy, Army etc...

2. Buying in SM is a status quo for Rinconadas.

AdNU Media Studies Department Holds First Conference on Communication and Media Studies

"News defying logic. Information delivery beyond ethics. Radio booths as marketplaces. No fee, no coverage, Partial reportage. Business and personal interests over upholding the truth." --These were issues tackled in Back to the Fourth Estate: The First Bicol Conference on Communication and Media Studies held last 25 to 26 February 2010 at the Madrigal Amphitheater, Ateneo de Naga University.

The event aimed to raise insights from the field of broadcasting and communication using an interdisciplinary approach in response to various issues in the world of media today. Hosted by the AdNU Media Studies Department and Media Studies Society, and attended by instructors, students, and media personnel from the region, the participants immersed themselves in various lectures and workshops.

To formally open the conference, Dr. Digna Alba (Chair of the Media Studies Department) gave her Welcome Address, followed by a presentation of the Conference Background by Maria Laquindanum (President of the Media Studies Society). Dr. Rolando Tolentino (Dean of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman) also gave his keynote address.

For this debut conference, the lectures presented were:

Press[ing] Concerns: Corruption in Local Media by Vic Nierva (MS Faculty and Writer), Media and Biopolitical Production by Adrian Remodo (Philosophy Faculty and Writer), In Media Res: Perspectives on Popular Culture in Bikol by Kristian Cordero (Writer), and The Philippine Press and the Culture of Impunity by Adonis Rugeria (MS Assistant Professor).

The workshops were Problematizing Mass Media Today by Fr. Wilmer Joseph Tria (Chair of the Philosophy Department) and Workshop on Local Media.

Students also presented their paper presentations: Mga Tungkulin ng Malayang Mamamayan in the Lyrics of Francis 'Kiko' Magalona in His Album, Freeman by Jordan Galileo Cortez and Burke's Dramatization in the 9th SONA of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo by Bernice Paz Paita and Jan Victor Agna.

i also think that we do not need so many int'l airports. seems there's this tendency among us to make airports international -- and turn towns into cities, and colleges into universities -- even when perhaps int'l flights aren't really as many as the others. we have "international" airports so called because they have these few flights to a nearby country. but the airport itself may not look international. :)

a decent airport sufficiently responds to the heavy - and growing heavier- volume of tourists is enough, i believe. naga/ camsur surely deserves a much longer runway, much bigger terminal bldg, much better facilities. some people find the short runway and the small aircraft inconvenient.

you hit the bullseye, Fr. Son (you remind me of my favourite Jesuit, Padre Juan Sanz). Filipinos have developed that culture of 'hinog sa pilit' and 'pwede na mentality'. We have ascribed upon ourselves great things that we are not.

There are cities which are not even worth being one but they successfully pushed through their bid more for political considerations and convenience than merit. A lot of candidates in the forthcoming elections are running not because they are competent but because they foolishly believe that they are or were conned to believe that they are.:ohno::ohno::ohno:

We do not need an international airport just for the sake of having it, after all in our experience they are usually an ordinary one with just big name. What we need in our province, as everyone has already said is a decent airport which will not be an embarassment to our ever increasing foreign visitors. I hope, sooner, Cam Sur will not be known only for great people and places but for an extraordinary 'domestic' airport as well.:)

That's true sir bob...SM City Naga will be the central mall of SM here in Bicol all the rest are Hypermarkets, Supercenters or Savemore. Expansion of SM City Naga is imminent.

What a burger! (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2010/feb25/xburger.html)
By Juan Escandor Jr.

http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2010/feb25/pictures/xburger.gif NAGA CITY---What a burger! Eight inches wide the size of a plate and about three inches thick with 500-gram patty of pure beef embellished with organic lettuce, red tomatoes and onions sans the grease.

For a burger lover, it could be a heavenly treat enough to stuff four starving stomachs to the max.

Like a wildfire, this kind of burger has been catching the fancy of fastfood lovers in Naga City because it is an out-of-the-box concept reinvented from the usual one you find in every fastfood restaurant.

Unlike the usual burger served in fastfood restaurants this uniquely sized burger has grilled patty for its fillings.

Couple Ronnie and Rachel Linao conceived their product after studying the market for months then went on launching it at Cereza, Magsaysay Ave. in this city a day before Valentine’s Day.

“After studying the burger market, we found that there is space for our product because of its size, ingredients free from monosodium glutamate and grilled patty,” Ronnie enthused.

The Linao couple, who decided to settle here with their two young boys from Manila since 2007, is not new to the food industry business as they were previously employed in known fastfood restaurants before having their own.

They chose to name their business “Miguel Angelo’s Whatta Burger” to somehow connote a startled expression when one sees for the first time what they are offering.

Being a start-up business, the “Whatta Burger” operation is a family affair where Ronnie does the preparation and grilling of the patty, Rachel slices and arranges the lettuce, tomatoes and onions and packages the finished product and their two sons, Miguel and Angelo, serve as waiters.

For now the “Whatta Burger” operates under a tent inside the Cereza compound which gives customers firsthand view of how the huge burger is prepared as customers wait for their order, dine in or take out.

Revealing some of their product secrets, Ronnie bared he has to prepare the patty using one-egg binder for three kilos of ground beef which he spiced and stored in the freezer for 24 hours to avoid freeze burn.

“Freeze burn is when the meat is somewhat cooked by the freeze wherein it loses the freshness and the fresh taste,” Ronnie explained.

He said freeze burned ground beef tend to crack so it would not have a good appearance during presentation.

Ronnie cooks the patty for 15-20 minutes under very hot ember for it to lock the heat inside and when it turned brown at the surface it would be ready to be filled into the bun.

Since they opened the “Whatta Burger” customers continuously increase every day which gives them hope they would succeed in their business endeavor, he mused.

Ronnie had been working with seven fastfood restaurants starting 1996 as site and business development officer until he was invited in 2006 to become part-owner and manager of one of the big multinational fastfood chains along Masaysay Avenue commercial strip.

Because he was in need of cash, he sold his share in the fastfood restaurant and became the operations manager of the restaurant of Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili, Camarines Sur.

There are two types of this burger, the plain burger @ 210 and the Mexicana or the spiced one at 220... Cooking of the patties last for about 30min... and it's thick as well...

Last Sunday, I bought one home... I had half and shared the other half with three other people: my parents and our helper...

I tried eating that half under 2 minutes.. 4 minutes gone, I'm barely done.. at least though, I enjoyed it... :)

If I may ask lang…How far is Iriga to Naga? I can only approximate the distance from Naga to Legazpi since I have been to both places.
Why am I asking this? Because SM SAN FERNANDO (Pampanga), SM CLARK (Angeles City, Pampanga), SM TARLAC, SM ROSALES are within a few kilometers distance lang.

So maybe it can also happen in the Bicol Region. I just don’t know how feasible the other places are (it depends). But I think Iriga and Legazpi can very well sustain an SM Branch. I just can’t tell if these two cities can fare well enough compared to Naga since Naga is now a fast-changing city and has a vibrant local economy.

One shining proof to that is a YELLOW CAB branch (I should know).

i also think that we do not need so many int'l airports. seems there's this tendency among us to make airports international -- and turn towns into cities, and colleges into universities -- even when perhaps int'l flights aren't really as many as the others. we have "international" airports so called because they have these few flights to a nearby country. but the airport itself may not look international.

Ronnie had been working with seven fastfood restaurants starting 1996 as site and business development officer until he was invited in 2006 to become part-owner and manager of one of the big multinational fastfood chains along Masaysay Avenue commercial strip.

Because he was in need of cash, he sold his share in the fastfood restaurant and became the operations manager of the restaurant of Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Pili, Camarines Sur.

you hit the bullseye, Fr.

I hope, sooner, Cam Sur will not be known only for great people and places but for an extraordinary 'domestic' airport as well.:)

amen. amen. allelluia! (dai pa palan pwede mag allelluia ta cuaresma pa :-) i hope we can more and more do away with this mediocrity and make quality our brand. kumbaga, breathe and live and think excellence all the time.

a decent, elegant, bikol-themed domestic airport should start soonest.

btw did you study high school at the ateneo in the days of the great johnny sanz? (well-loved football coach and counselor who remembered our names, preached great homilies and told us funny and memorable stories, and always had a heart for the least, last and lost.)

i always remember him each june: that time of the year when he would look for students who had not enrolled yet. he would visit their homes and find a way to get them registered, even giving them uniforms, shoes and books (which he had asked from graduating seniors the previous year)

may he rest in peace. he is now buried in sacred heart novitiate, lagro, novaliches, qc.

^^Marhay na aga sa gabos!

yum yum yum!

I've confirmed the promotion... eat this under 4 minutes and it's free...

LEt's have one after the CHOO CHOO RIDE!

if only i can bring back the appetite of my high school/ teenage years, this basin of a burger will be gone in 5

the location is good. isipon na lang nindo, kung linaag ini sa cafeteria kang all-boys' high school! haha. nasa grill pa lang ang burger patty, arahit na yan :lol:

You nailed it Father... specifically for the towns that were converted into cities which rather look more like "provincial".

come visit naga, dustin, and enjoy our food. we have many eating places and great eats -- many of them homegrown -- because we just love to eat and eat and eat. :)

DOT uses broader tourism data analysis to boost economy (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=6&sid=&nid=6&rid=261843)
By Lily O Ramos

MANILA, March 2 (PNA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) has further reinforced its technical assessment of tourism traffic to the country to capture the aggregate and accurate state of tourism and its contribution to the economy.

“We have expanded our assessment to include a more systematic and in-depth analysis of top destinations to provide a clearer insight on the tourism movements throughout the country," said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

"Understanding these movements allows us to create strategies to further support the development of these destinations. This system also creates awareness for these places in the national level,” he said.

The tourism chief added that the enhanced system also aims to empower local government units (LGUs) to gather information and generate ideas for tourism development in their area.

“We have actively engaged in a campaign, with the help of Japan, to train local officers in monitoring tourism traffic in their respective destinations," Durano said.

"Empowering them builds up their capacity to create policies and strategies to stimulate tourism and boost livelihood in their areas,” he explained.

Since 2006, the DOT has maintained a partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a statistical-capacity building program in the local government level.

The ongoing campaign, called the DOT-JICA Technical Cooperation Program Management (TCPM), taps more than 100 LGUs to standardize their data collection methodology which is used to analyze tourism information culled from hotels, resorts and other tourism accommodations in their areas.

Director Alan Cañizal of the Tourism Development Planning, said “The campaign capitalizes on the more attuned perception of locals for mining information about their sites. It also generates consciousness among community members, from the top to the grassroots, to manage their own destination and help promote it.”

“More details on travellers will certainly help us create new and relevant products for our regular and niche markets. We are moving towards a fresh, revitalized approach,” said Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque, Jr.

“These innovations are logical and necessary if we want to keep up with the ever-changing market trends. With this detailed breakdown and analysis of data, the tourism industry is able to respond to needs, create demand and serve our foreign and local tourists.

"All these lead to a more robust tourism industry which translates to more jobs for Filipinos,” Durano said.(PNA)

Yes, the annual report is only for SM Department store. But i think if there is a survey for groceries, Food court and "high- end" stores, Naguenos will probably be on top consumer in this field.

yes,bro, i believe.

Pwede natin ikumpara yan sa Naga as Manila, Naga is a center Commerce ika nga, center of education, culture, sports and etc... kaya karamihan dyan din yan sa Naga nagwowork, nagaaral, nagnenegosyo or anything basta may kaugnayan sa kanila ang naga.

Kaya kahit na may SM Sa ibang Lugar dito sa Camsur or ibang Part ng Bikol,sa naga pa rin sila bibili kung kasama nila ang Naga sa Pang araw-araw nilang ginagawa dahil dun sila malapit.
Gets... maga peeps
kaya nagkakaganun.
pero in terms...sa mga restaurants, fastfood, moviehouses, quantum, botiques, etc usually mga taga naga na yan for sure, like here sa Manila.
Thanks

Fernando pushes for mass transport system (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=13&sid=&nid=13&rid=261868)

MANILA, March 2 (PNA) – Bagumbayan vice presidential bet Bayani Fernando said he plans to push for a mass transport system Luzonwide, from Ilocos down to Bicol region.

Fernando, an engineer by profession, said the immediate construction of a railroad transportation that would traverse major provinces in Luzon from Ilocos Region down to the Bicol region was imperative to provide faster and safer delivery of people and goods as well.

"Developed countries have very efficient mass transport system. If we really want progress, it is high-time that we improve our tourism and trade industries through a faster, more advanced and safer transportation and I, being an engineer is offering my services to get these things done,” he said.

Fernando has visited some areas in Baguio City, which were destroyed by landslides during onslaught of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng last year.

Fernando inspected Kennon Road, Marcos Highway, Naguilian Road and talked to some landslide victims in La Trinidad, Benguet regarding the rehabilitation of their communities.

The party's standard bearer, Sen. Richard Gordon said that rehabilitation of the mass-transport system, including conversion of the coastlines in Luzon into a tourism destination is one of their platforms. (PNA)

¡Felicidades por el nuevo hilo!
Many good things are happening in our province and city despite the national crises we've been going through all these years. First, there was only Naga to talk good things about nationally. Now the province has etched its name in the national consciousness in the area of tourism in an unprecendented fashion from tail-ender in recent memory to just a kick away to being the most visited in the country the previous year. The country is now talking about Cam Sur and with the waves of development that is planned in the province it looks like there will be no letting up to this phenomenon known as Cam Sur.

¡Vaya Cam Sur!

Congratulations to our new thread!
CamSur is really making a name.

I was in Davao for almost a month and the place was really good. Cheap food, well-mannered taxi drivers, lots of place to visit in (4 big malls, samal island, garden of eden, crocodile farm, eagle farm, peoples park, jack's ridge, zorb, zipline, gimik places (MTS and Torres), beautiful Davaoeña (daghang gwapa uy) and many more. See you again Davao.

But I had a bad experience with Cebu Pacific. Two days ago when were supposed to fly back to Manila with our scheduled flight 14:10. We were late informed that our flight was canceled and we were transferred to 19:20 flight.:ohno: so we were in Davao airport for more than 7hrs waiting for our flight. :ohno::ohno: Cebu Pacific should make an extra effort in informing their passengers about the changes in their flight schedule.

I invited some delegates of SFC ICon 2010 in Davao to visit CamSur (for Sfc ICon 2011 and for tourism purposes also).
And they are excited to see these in CamSur.
1. Naga City (centro area) -some of them already went here and they want to see again Biggs and halo-halo at Iceblink
2. CWC
3. Caramoan
4. Bicol foods (pili, gulay na natong - laing, pinangat, bikol express)
5. Churches in Naga (Cathedral and Basilica) and visit the our Lady of Peñafrancia

I encourage them to try these when they visit CamSur:
1. train ride to Iriga

DoT bolsters drive to promote tourism
