Hi eeldedabolyuayen. I have been reading your post. Since i original posted that SM survey with good intention. I tried to read my previous posting. As i remember. I did said that it was only in SM department store survey and not outside of it. which Naguenos would " probably " top the survey in the groceries or high end stores, But unfortunately there was no survey outside the SM department store.

I just like to CLARIFY and not a discussion, that the intention of my previous posts is to APPRECIATE/ ADMIRE the buying power of the Rinconada's in the city and not to de-classify/segregate into second class shoppers.(definitely not) in the contrary most of Rinconadas are strongly present in high end stores in the city ( CBD I and SM) which i usually heard them talking.

The Naga City is a diversified society , compose of many people from all over Bicol region. The business mentality is no longer LOCAL but GLOBAL. accepting people of all walks of life.

I hope, this would be a clarification and share a healthy information.

This is the reason why I enrolled my children to a non graded school- the one with a feel good curriculum.

No numerical grades, no grade levels- lessons are given according on their age group and maturity on their own pace and their own time.

Traditional schools are grade conscious and only after children knowing the right answer and achievements are evaluated numerically.

I have been hearing about this scandal on the radio for the past few weeks.

IFP Philippines sends more scholars abroad
Legazpi City (26 March) -- The Ford Foundation's International Fellowships Program (FP) in the Philippines has sent 28 more scholars abroad to study for post graduate degrees, mostly abroad, 26 of which were deployed second half of 2009 and 3 more last month.

These 29 scholars are part of Cohort 2008, so named because IFP Philippines selected them from a pool of applicants in 2008. The very first group was Cohort 2002, while members of Cohort 2009 are in the process of applying to their chosen universities.

Of the members of Cohort 2008, 12 are now studying in the United States, 6 in the United Kingdom, 2 in the Philippines and one in Thailand. Two scholars will leave for Australia this month.

The scholars come from varied backgrounds. Fifteen are from the academic institutions, 5 from non-government organizations, four from government service, and two from the private sector.

Likewise, they are pursuing different areas of study. Twelve are in the natural sciences, 6 in the social sciences, 5 in the arts and humanities, 4 in education, and 2 in law.

The Ford Foundation launched the IFP in 2001 with an allocation of $280 million, the largest single grant in the foundation's history. The program operates in 22 countries where the Ford Foundation is a grant maker.

The IFP is different from other international fellowships for the following reasons: first, scholars are selected on the basis of their leadership record and commitment to their country or community as well as on the strength of their academic achievement; second, they come from disadvantaged groups with limited access to higher education; and third, scholars can pursue graduate studies in educational institutions anywhere in the world.

In the Philippines, IFP has already granted scholarships to 246 people, 93 of whom have already completed their degrees.

The IFP selects its scholars through a rigorous series of interviews. Interviewers include top academics from different fields.

Already, 104 Filipino alumni of the IFP Philippines have been accounted for from Cohorts 2002 to 2007. Ten has finished doctoral programs and 82 earned master degrees while 7 have to defend doctoral dissertations. A third of grantees pursued studies in the field of development or development management while 18 did so in social sciences; a fifth took up applied science and environment; 9 finished masters in public policy and management, 8 in education, 2 in law, 2 in fine arts degrees, 2 in tourism and 1 in information management.

More than two thirds studied in universities outside the Philippines and nearly all of them have returned.

In terms of geographic origin, grantees came from up north as Basco, Batanes to far south as Isabela City in Basilan. Mindanao is strongly represented among the alumni as is Bicol Region particularly Camarines Sur.

Of the 18 Bicolano scholars from 2002-2007, nine are from Camarines Sur with 4 from Naga City, Pedro B. Bellen, Jr., MA Development Studies'04; Wilfredo B. Prilles, Jr., Masters in Planning, Growth and Regeneration'05, University of Cambridge;; Arnel B. Sanchez, MA Forest and Nature Conservation'05; Wageningen University; Melinda T. Victoria Serrano of Ocampo, Camarines Sur, MSc Organic Agriculture (Major in Consumer and Market)'07 Wageningen University; Francia L. Villaflor of Bato, Camarines Sur, PhD candidate Child and Family Studies, Miriam College; Charlie Balagtas of Tigaon, Camarines Sur, MA Sustainable International Development'08, Brandies University; Trixie Ann C. Clemente of Ragay, Camarines Sur, MSc Environmental Forestry'07, University of Walges-Bangor; Felicidad Mendoza-Justiniana of San Fernando, Camarines Sur, MA Sustainable International Development'08, Brandeis University; and Iligino Francisco Peñones, Jr. of Iriga City, MFA Creative Writing'09, San Jose State University.

our lecturer in Mythology and Folklore class back in college, Tito Valienet (anthropologist by training) had all these pamphlets and booklets frm cecilio press in his bikoliana collection. many times he would take them to class and read from them. it was surely one nice way of drawing our interest.

Legazpi City (26 March) -- The Ford Foundation's International Fellowships Program (FP) in the Philippines has sent 28 more scholars abroad to study for post graduate degrees, mostly abroad, 26 of which were deployed second half of 2009 and 3 more last month.

These 29 scholars are part of Cohort 2008, so named because IFP Philippines selected them from a pool of applicants in 2008. The very first group was Cohort 2002, while members of Cohort 2009 are in the process of applying to their chosen universities.

Of the members of Cohort 2008, 12 are now studying in the United States, 6 in the United Kingdom, 2 in the Philippines and one in Thailand. Two scholars will leave for Australia this month.

The scholars come from varied backgrounds. Fifteen are from the academic institutions, 5 from non-government organizations, four from government service, and two from the private sector.

Likewise, they are pursuing different areas of study. Twelve are in the natural sciences, 6 in the social sciences, 5 in the arts and humanities, 4 in education, and 2 in law.

The Ford Foundation launched the IFP in 2001 with an allocation of $280 million, the largest single grant in the foundation's history. The program operates in 22 countries where the Ford Foundation is a grant maker.

The IFP is different from other international fellowships for the following reasons: first, scholars are selected on the basis of their leadership record and commitment to their country or community as well as on the strength of their academic achievement; second, they come from disadvantaged groups with limited access to higher education; and third, scholars can pursue graduate studies in educational institutions anywhere in the world.

In the Philippines, IFP has already granted scholarships to 246 people, 93 of whom have already completed their degrees.

The IFP selects its scholars through a rigorous series of interviews. Interviewers include top academics from different fields.

Already, 104 Filipino alumni of the IFP Philippines have been accounted for from Cohorts 2002 to 2007. Ten has finished doctoral programs and 82 earned master degrees while 7 have to defend doctoral dissertations. A third of grantees pursued studies in the field of development or development management while 18 did so in social sciences; a fifth took up applied science and environment; 9 finished masters in public policy and management, 8 in education, 2 in law, 2 in fine arts degrees, 2 in tourism and 1 in information management.

More than two thirds studied in universities outside the Philippines and nearly all of them have returned.

In terms of geographic origin, grantees came from up north as Basco, Batanes to far south as Isabela City in Basilan. Mindanao is strongly represented among the alumni as is Bicol Region particularly Camarines Sur.

Villaflor of Bato, Camarines Sur, PhD candidate Child and Family Studies, Miriam College; Charlie Balagtas of Tigaon, Camarines Sur, MA Sustainable International Development'08, Brandies University; Trixie Ann C. Clemente of Ragay, Camarines Sur, MSc Environmental Forestry'07, University of Walges-Bangor; Felicidad Mendoza-Justiniana of San Fernando, Camarines Sur, MA Sustainable International Development'08, Brandeis University; and Iligino Francisco Peñones, Jr. of Iriga City, MFA Creative Writing'09, San Jose State University.

Joshua B. Guinto of Daet, Camarines Norte finished MSc Management of Agro-Ecological Knowledge ad Social Change'08, Wageningen University.

Upon the return of the scholars from their studies especially those who completed their graduate studies abroad, a re-integration program is conducted by the Philippine Institute of Social Science based in UP Diliman, Quezon City. Last week, Higino Francisco Peñones, Jr., Gremil Alessandro Alcazar-Naz and Ma. Lyn Estoquia underwent said re-assimilation program held in Central Luzon State University in Science City of Muñoz. the front lawn of the seminario was playground to us in our carefree days. we would play taraguan and tarabangan from after lunch to sawa. summer of our childhood years was forever.

there used to be flowering kanda (calachuci) trees along the walls (jacob side) of the Colegio (USI). i used to climb these walls many, many Mays ago
and help myself (hehehe) with the flowers while "colleagues" waited on the ground. this was for the Flores de Mayo offering which we neighborhood kids participated in.

fortunately, not one of the good nuns caught me :lol:

CMRCA Helps To Establish New Climbing Area In The Philippines
March 17, 2010

In February, CMRCA team members Josh Morris and Noppadon Uppakham (Taw) were invited to assist in the development of a new climbing area in The Philippines. Josh and Taw joined with American climber and mountain bike trail developer Cuatro Hundley to rebolt existing routes and add a handful of new routes. The team was invited by the energetic and proactive governor of Camsur Province, Governor L Ray Villafuerte. The governor has worked tirelessly over the past six years to help bring his province out of poverty and into the forfront of tourism in the Philippines. The governor sees the potential for Camsur to become one of Asia's best developed adventure getaways.

"The Gov," as he is kindly known by his dedicated followers is committed to establishing Gota Island in Camsur as one of the best developed climbing areas in Asia. He is committed to supplying titanium bolts and using the best Hilti glue, learning from the lessons learned by Thailand's history of bolting challenges. All of the routes in Camsur are currently bolted with titanium glue ins and with Hilti RE-500 glue. It is rare to find a politician with such broad and sweeping vision and The Gov's commitment to high safety standards are an example to the rest of Asia.

Over a period of 14 days, CMRCA provided bolt installation training and assistance in developing a long term sustainable development plan for climbing based tourism. We look forward to visitng Gota Island again soon for more bolting and to begin exploration of the untapped potential for stunning cave exploration.

the front lawn of the seminario was playground to us in our carefree days. we would play taraguan and tarabangan from after lunch to sawa. summer of our childhood years was forever.

there used to be flowering kanda (calachuci) trees along the walls (jacob side) of the Colegio (USI). i used to climb these walls many, many Mays ago
and help myself (hehehe) with the flowers while "colleagues" waited on the ground. this was for the Flores de Mayo offering which we neighborhood kids participated in.

fortunately, not one of the good nuns caught me :lol:

Miss Necio was not dethroned; she doesn't have a title, to begin with--just a runner-up. She is too precocious that she joined Bb. Pilipinas when she is very young, hence not eligible to join in Miss Universe.

Going back to Venus, people at missosology.org are going to write a petition letter--this we will do because among the girls who followed Miriam Quiambao (another Bicolana; first runner-up in Miss Universe 1999), Venus is the best. She is even more prepared than Miriam when the latter competed.

Good evening. Just got home. I'm loving my new company.:D

Yesterday, while shopping at a Korean store, my wife standing in front a mountain of kamoteng kahoy (cassava) asked me if I can make some nilupak (linubak in Iriga). I did not gave here an outright answer and continue on checking the other produce. I have to say that the question invoked fond memories of linubak making of old. Almost everyone had a wooden mortar and pestle of all sizes, just like having a blender or a rice cooker for that matter.

After mulling her question and another turn thru the fish section, I went back to the cassava mountain and grabbed a few. My recipe is a simple one, cassava, sugar, grated young coconut, butter and a dash of vanilla.

To drown this hearty snack, I poured some coconut juice. Enjoy!

The Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc is NOT doing these young ladies a favor by not doing proper due diligence. It appears that these disqualifications have happened before. It is not right to question these ladies qualifications after the coronation. This should have been done even before they were introduced as “official candidates”!

NAGA CITY—Don’t be surprised if one day, Bicol dishes like “laing, kinunot na pagi (stingray) and the incendiary Bicol express” would find their way to restaurants in Fujian province in China.

Xu Shangdong, 25, a cultural exchange volunteer from China, spent a lot of time hanging around a small canteen just outside Ateneo de Naga University (AdeNU), observing how Filipino dishes are prepared, as a way of learning the local culture.

Xu, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Zhang Zhou University, is one of two volunteers from the Fujian province selected to work in the Philippines for one school year.

This was made possible under a cultural exchange program of the AdeNU in coordination with the International Education Exchange Association, an organization of universities based in China.

Xu, who chose the English name Paul, endeared himself to the Lucky 12 Canteen owners and employees. He would often hang around the kitchen to watch Mac, the cook, prepare Bicolano dishes.

“He would stay for about an hour, just watching and asking me about Filipino cooking. He would take out a small notebook and write. Later, he would teach at Ateneo High School. He would come again the following day,” Mac, the cook, said in Bicolano.

Through his daily visits, Xu learned the basics of Filipino cooking, which he said was similar to some of the cuisine in his province.

Food as culture

“In China, cuisine is part of the cultural and art heritage. The emperor’s meal, composed of 180 recipes, had been preserved for hundreds of years,” he said.

Xu said he would bring the recipes he learned in his 10-month stay in Naga City to China. He hopes to introduce them to his friends and family.

He left on Thursday for China and vowed to come back in May next year “to mentor students in Mandarin and Chinese culture.”

Teased about the possibility of marrying a Filipino woman when he returns, Xu smiled and complained: “I have no girlfriend here, nor in China.”

Family-oriented

The Chinese volunteer said there were similarities between the Filipino and Chinese ways of life—both were family-oriented.

“I come from a small town called Ping Nan. My father runs a small business and my mother is a housewife. I have a sister who is two years younger than me,” Xu said, but did not elaborate on whether the “one child” policy in China was still enforced.

“They cannot follow everybody. China has 1.4 billion people,” he said.

Xu said he taught Mandarin language and Chinese literature to high school students in China and did the same at the AdeNU.

While here, he connected to his friends in China through Facebook.

10,000 characters

According to Xu, 80 percent of the universities in China are owned and controlled by the state so students pay matriculation fees which are much lower than those in private schools.

“I studied six years in elementary, six years in high school and four years in college,” he said.

To be able to speak and write in Mandarin, he said, one must memorize 3,000 characters. For advanced learners, one must memorize 10,000 characters.

“You could write a book if you have memorized 10,000 characters,” Xu said.

Warm people

He said the Chinese educational curriculum required all students to learn English starting in high school up to college. He was thankful for the exchange program as he was able to practice English.

“In China, we only speak English inside the classroom. It’s hard to practice English because we speak Mandarin all the time,” Xu said.

He said he felt a sense of fulfillment being given the opportunity to join the exchange program.

According to Xu, Filipinos are warm and accommodating which allowed him to get to know and appreciate the culture.

The delicious food was a bonus, he said.
