happy 31st thread!

when I went there last year medyo maalon asin matipsik! maalpog asin roughroad. dai ko lang aram ngonian.
maybe Ms. Ina and Ms. Jo can give us an idea.:)

i've always associated waves -- the dusty kind -- with my early trips to Buhi :-) i hope the road's better now. going there May 16-17 for a workshop with ateneo administrators. (on the side, hoping to enjoy buhi sinapot, fried tilapia and tinoto, and a view of the lake and the dormant volcano from the roof deck of St Bridg )

that's great! garo talaga dakulaon itong Porta Mariae at Metropolitan Cathedral. Rush naman an pagpagibo kaidto.

Our churches here Naga are doing renovation or beautification in preparation for the 300 years of devotion to INA. the Basilica is renovating their altar an putting white clay/sand on the Basilica Grounds. Imagine the millions of people the will gather here on September!

I think they are planning to put one. dai ko lang aram kun sain...

these are welcome exciting developments indeed to celebrate and showcase our proud past and to remind us who enjoy the benefits of this past. i just hope that with renovations going on (esp of the older structures), care is given to preserve priceless heritage.

The Philippines is starting to be discovered not only by foreigners but by our local tourists, thanks to the availability of cheaper flights and more bargain options for local travelers. I believe that the upswing in local tourism is also greatly influenced by travel bloggers and social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

In 2010, it is now considered cool to travel and explore locally. Boracay will retain its standing as THE ultimate beach party place, but local tourists will most probably look for something more special and exciting -- something new to discover and experience, a way to get to know our country a little bit more.

Here are the top 5 awesome travel experiences in the Philippines in 2010:

#3. It’s Cool To Be In Bicol

There are 5 reasons why it is cool to start exploring Bicol in 2010:

1. It is one of the few sites in the world where you get to see the Whale Sharks up close in Donsol, Sorsogon. At the moment, majority of the international tourists in the Philippines only go to these three places: Boracay for the beach, El Nido Resorts for one of the best Green Resorts, and Donsol, Sorsogon for the whale sharks.

2. CAMSUR Wakeboarding complex has reinvigorated the tourism industry in this region. It plays host to international wakeboarding competitions and is the site of the Iron Man competition in the Philippines.

3. Caramoan Peninsula was the talk of the town in 2009. It was made famous when the French franchise of Survivor was filmed in Gota Beach. As part of the deal with the government, they developed the Gota Beach Resort, which tourists can visit during the off-season of Survivor.

4. Misibis Island Resort, managed by Discovery group, is one of the luxurious eco-park destinations in Albay. It is now the jump-off point for exploring Mayon Volcano, where they offer Lava Treks to see the famous landmark up close. (It is not a good idea to do it while there is a threat of an eruption.)

5. Calaguas Islands -- my favorite destination in Bicol, located in Camarines Norte. It is a bit far away, though. You have to travel across open seas to see the beauty of this undiscovered and undeveloped white beach paradise. You can join eco-adventure tours here. I think it will still be some time before we will see major investments in the island.

the robust tourist influx in Caramoan is hinder because of the lack of hotels daw...to augment such need residents of Caramoan are now investing their houses as backpackers/vacationers lodging.

Philippines Pavilion

Designed by the firm of famous Filipino architect Ed Calma, Philippine pavilion’s façade will be dominated by the Pinoy hand as its major visual statement to emphasize the human dimension in urbanization, and to assert the Filipino’s genius at (hand)crafting vital relationships through work, art, and play. Hands belonging to artists, workers, peasants, women, men and boxing heroes, among others, shall be painted on all sides of the pavilion exterior and the queuing area.

To mirror the Philippines own theme of “Performing Cities,” its pavilion’s interior shall present a “seamless melange of exhibitions, performances and videos that showcase the assets of the Philippines’ best performing cities. These cities are Iloilo, Naga, Cebu, Manila, Malaybalay, Puerto Princesa, Davao, Calbayog, San Fernando (La Union), Makati and Taguig cities.

The pavilion will feature daily perfomances by Filipino artists and entertainers, including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, pianist Cecille Licad, Joanna Go, Rachelle Gerodiea and the group, Kontra Gapi.

The Philippines has previously won gold for best pavilion at both the World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, and the Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain.

Theme : "Performing Cities”
Architect: Ed Calma
Cost: PhP450 million

Sino teacher to bring Bicol recipes to China

By Juan Escandor Jr.

Filed Under: Food, Culture (general), Education

NAGA CITY—Don’t be surprised if one day, Bicol dishes like “laing, kinunot na pagi (stingray) and the incendiary Bicol express” would find their way to restaurants in Fujian province in China.

Xu Shangdong, 25, a cultural exchange volunteer from China, spent a lot of time hanging around a small canteen just outside Ateneo de Naga University (AdeNU), observing how Filipino dishes are prepared, as a way of learning the local culture.

Xu, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Zhang Zhou University, is one of two volunteers from the Fujian province selected to work in the Philippines for one school year.

This was made possible under a cultural exchange program of the AdeNU in coordination with the International Education Exchange Association, an organization of universities based in China.

Xu, who chose the English name Paul, endeared himself to the Lucky 12 Canteen owners and employees. He would often hang around the kitchen to watch Mac, the cook, prepare Bicolano dishes.

“He would stay for about an hour, just watching and asking me about Filipino cooking. He would take out a small notebook and write. Later, he would teach at Ateneo High School. He would come again the following day,” Mac, the cook, said in Bicolano.

Through his daily visits, Xu learned the basics of Filipino cooking, which he said was similar to some of the cuisine in his province.

Food as culture

“In China, cuisine is part of the cultural and art heritage. The emperor’s meal, composed of 180 recipes, had been preserved for hundreds of years,” he said.

Xu said he would bring the recipes he learned in his 10-month stay in Naga City to China. He hopes to introduce them to his friends and family.

He left on Thursday for China and vowed to come back in May next year “to mentor students in Mandarin and Chinese culture.”

Teased about the possibility of marrying a Filipino woman when he returns, Xu smiled and complained: “I have no girlfriend here, nor in China.”

Family-oriented

The Chinese volunteer said there were similarities between the Filipino and Chinese ways of life—both were family-oriented.

“I come from a small town called Ping Nan. My father runs a small business and my mother is a housewife. I have a sister who is two years younger than me,” Xu said, but did not elaborate on whether the “one child” policy in China was still enforced.

“They cannot follow everybody. China has 1.4 billion people,” he said.

Xu said he taught Mandarin language and Chinese literature to high school students in China and did the same at the AdeNU.

While here, he connected to his friends in China through Facebook.

10,000 characters

According to Xu, 80 percent of the universities in China are owned and controlled by the state so students pay matriculation fees which are much lower than those in private schools.

“I studied six years in elementary, six years in high school and four years in college,” he said.

To be able to speak and write in Mandarin, he said, one must memorize 3,000 characters. For advanced learners, one must memorize 10,000 characters.

“You could write a book if you have memorized 10,000 characters,” Xu said.

Warm people

He said the Chinese educational curriculum required all students to learn English starting in high school up to college. He was thankful for the exchange program as he was able to practice English.

“In China, we only speak English inside the classroom. It’s hard to practice English because we speak Mandarin all the time,” Xu said.

He said he felt a sense of fulfillment being given the opportunity to join the exchange program.

According to Xu, Filipinos are warm and accommodating which allowed him to get to know and appreciate the culture.

The delicious food was a bonus, he said.

NAGA CITY, Philippines – Long before Magsaysay Avenue became this city’s entertainment strip, a homegrown restaurant quietly opened and quickly turned into a touchstone by which all other dining places on the avenue would come to be measured.

Twenty years ago, Batangas born Cristina Palma put up Cristy’s Kamayan restaurant—a place where diners could eat good food and feel right at home.

Kamayan started when the packed food selling business of Palma had grown in size and popularity that she needed to put up a place where her clients could eat the food she would prepare right away.

She was a graduate of a food and nutrition course, but her inclination toward food and cookery was largely her father’s fault—he persevered in teaching Palma how to prepare food the right way.

“Since I was a child, my father has been teaching me how to cook and, as early as my elementary school years, everyone in the family noticed my love for cooking,” says Palma.

So, when the time came, she established her own restaurant and named it after herself.

Then along came the economic troubles of the 1990s, which greatly affected her finances and caused her once thriving restaurant to freefall.

“It was during that time that I learned the importance of not giving up. I learned how to cope with business problems. I became stronger enough to hurdle them. I did not give up despite the downtrend,” Palma says.

In 2004, she and her family got back into the restaurant business and opened “Bob Marlin”—a pun on the name of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley and the handsome fish food Blue Marlin.

“My son loves reggae and Bob Marley, and we want the restaurant to be a new place where our clients may dine al fresco in a beach setting. Hence, ... Bob Marlin,” Palma explains.

She says Bob Marlin is basically the old Kamayan restaurant but with new concepts.

“It is a place where everyone can have seafood and our old regulars,” she adds.

Since the restaurant opened, many high-profile clients have dropped in to sample the food.

On a plate, Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo wrote that the best beef “dinuguan” (blood stew) may be found in Bob Marlin.

That plate now hangs on a wall of the restaurant.

Senator Pia Cayetano and folk singer Joey Ayala also posted their culinary remarks, commenting on how delectable the dishes were.

Palma says that the restaurant used to be filled up only during school breaks, festival season and the holidays.

“But with the tourism boom in Camarines Sur, it has become all year round.”

She says even foreign tourists from the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex would come to the restaurant and order Filipino food.

And now that more and more conventions are being held in Naga, out-of-town visitors are making a beeline for the restaurant.

The bestsellers at Bob Marlin is the crispy pata (pork forelegs) and beef dinuguan.

In tribute to Bicol cookery, Bob Marlin also serves the classic “pinangat” (ground young coconut meat laced with thick coconut milk and wrapped in tender gabi, or taro, leaves), Bicol Express, and “laing” (shredded gabi leaves in coconut milk).

Another hot item on the menu is “bulalo” (beef bone marrow), which is served steaming and flavored with spices.

Other restaurant staples are, of course, marlin and tuna steaks, freshly grilled squid and stewed fish, all served with tropical refreshments.

While dining, customers are treated to reggae music.

Palma says her first priority is the satisfaction of their diners.

“They should always be delighted by the food and restaurant service,” she says.

From time to time, she will personally concoct new items on the menu and, once she perfects it, she will teach her chef how to prepare the dish.

Today, Bob Marlin is at the top of every restaurant denizen’s list. From baptismal and graduation bashes to small wedding receptions, the restaurant has become the place to be in this bustling city.

“Dedication and hard work, that’s my secret to success,” says Palma.

Broader tourism data analysis to boost economy -- DOT chief
MANILA, May 14 (PNA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) has further reinforced its technical assessment of tourism traffic to the country to capture the aggregate and accurate state of tourism and its contribution to the economy.

“We have expanded our assessment to include a more systematic and in-depth analysis of top destinations to provide a clearer insight on the tourism movements throughout the country. Understanding these movements allows us to create strategies to further support the development of these destinations. This system also creates awareness for these places in the national level,” said Tourism Secretary Joseph 'Ace' Durano.

Classified as top destinations are those that have at least 100,000 foreign tourists annually and have received substantial tourism-related investments.

Since its adoption in 2008, the new system has propelled several previously unknown local sites to the main tourism circuit, such as Camarines Sur, which enjoyed a 117.25 percent growth in foreign and domestic arrivals in 2009.

The DOT chief added that the enhanced system also aims to empower local government units (LGU) to gather information and generate ideas for tourism development in their area.

“We have actively engaged in a campaign, with the help of Japan, to train local officers in monitoring tourism traffic in their respective destinations. Empowering them builds up their capacity to create policies and strategies to stimulate tourism and boost livelihood in their areas,” Durano explained.

Since 2006, the DOT has maintained a partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a statistical-capacity building program in the local government level.

The ongoing campaign, called the DOT-JICA Technical Cooperation Program Management (TCPM), taps more than 100 LGUs to standardize their data collection methodology which is used to analyze tourism information culled from hotels, resorts and other tourism accommodations in their areas.

According to Director Alan Cañizal of the Tourism Development Planning, “The campaign capitalizes on the more attuned perception of locals for mining information about their sites. It also generates consciousness among community members, from the top to the grassroots, to manage their own destination and help promote it.”

DOT’s new documentation process has also started integrating data collected from the newly-released arrival/departure (A/D) cards.

Bearing more detailed information on passengers, the new A/D cards include questions on Type of Accommodation, Education/Training, Official Mission, Religion/Pilgrimage, Health, and Transit.

“More details on travellers will certainly help us create new and relevant products for our regular and niche markets. We are moving towards a fresh, revitalized approach,” said Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr.

“These innovations are logical and necessary if we want to keep up with the ever-changing market trends. With this detailed breakdown and analysis of data, the tourism industry is able to respond to needs, create demand and serve our foreign and local tourists. All these lead to a more robust tourism industry which translates to more jobs for Filipinos,” Durano said. (PNA)http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=6&sid=&nid=6&rid=275744

A controversial dam project in Camarines Sur
A second candidate, Luis Raymund “LRAY” Villafuerte Jr. (NP), did not reply when the Inquirer tried to ask for his position. In past radio interviews, however, he has been a vocal critic of the dam project, citing safety and environmental concerns.

Do you favor resumption of the construction of the Libmanan-Cabusao Dam?

Candidates for governor:
FELIX ALFELOR (Lakas-Kampi-CMD): “I am in favor of the dam project. I am supporting Rep. Dato Arroyo in pushing for the completion of the dam. The project has been conceptualized as early as 30 years ago and it must be implemented now. Its completion will greatly boost the agricultural production of the province. We must be grateful to the President and her son.”

A second candidate, Luis Raymund “LRAY” Villafuerte Jr. (NP), did not reply when the Inquirer tried to ask for his position. In past radio interviews, however, he has been a vocal critic of the dam project, citing safety and environmental concerns.

Candidates for representatives of the first district:

ROLANDO ANDAYA JR. (Lakas-Kampi-CMD): “The construction of the dam came at a time when people were reeling from the effects of flooding in Metro Manila and northern Luzon that had been blamed to the presence of dams. With El Ni?a dam will be important in providing irrigation but before it could be pushed through, it should be properly explained to the people, especially to those who will be affected.”

NESTOR DE LOS REYES (NP): “I am against the dam project. It must be dismantled immediately. It is a threat to the residents of the towns of Sipocot and Lupi. It is not a real project but a milking cow. It is subject to corruption. I go for the rehabilitation of existing water pumps of the current irrigation system. Better else, we should buy new pumping equipment rather that build a costly dam.”

Candidates for representative of the second district:

FERMIN MABULO (NP): “The dam is too costly. It could be subject to graft and corruption. I go for the rehabilitation of existing irrigation system, instead. The dam is not needed. The lives of people should not be endangered.”

DIOSDADO IGNACIO “DATO” ARROYO (Lakas-Kampi-CMD): “That is what a dam is: a ‘storage facility for life’ ... given that dam, all we need to do is make the project work ... and get life to grow throughout this land ... It is a fact that the people willed that dam be built ... thus it is but righteous and just that the people ... and only the people ... be empowered to will it undone.”

Candidates for representative of the third district:

LUIS R. VILLAFUERTE (NPC): “It was suspended. Let it be.”

OSCAR NONITO ARCILLA (Lapiang Manggagawa): “I’ll leave the decision to the people after consultation.”

JAIME JACOB JR. (LP): “I will go for the resumption of the dam, provided that it will be implemented under a new administration. The issue is the possibility that the budget allocated to it, which is too costly for a dam project, would be subject to graft and corruption and be used to finance the campaign of the candidates of the President instead.”

Candidates for representative of the fourth district:

TEODORO CRUZ JR. (Lakas-Kampi-CMD): “I am for the resumption of the dam project but we must balance its benefits to agricultural production and its probable adverse effect to the environment. We must also address the needs and welfare of those who will be displaced by the dam. They should be amply protected.”

A second candidate, Arnulfo Fuentebella (NPC), declined to comment, citing tight schedule.

Candidates for representative of the fifth district:

JESUS JAY DIMAIWAT (LP): “I’ll push for the creation of the Rinconada Development Authority. Included in its functions is to check the flood-mitigation projects of the Bicol River Basin Management and Development Program.”

SALVIO FORTUNO (NP): “I am not in favor of the resumption of the dam because I am concerned of the danger that the dam or any other dam may pose to the affected residents. We know what happens when a dam overflows. It is dangerous. I also heard that with the construction of the dam, several residents would be displaced. This must be addressed.”

A third candidate, Emmanuel Alfelor (Lakas-Kampi-CMD), declined to comment, citing tight schedule. http://politics.inquirer.net/politics/view/20100505-268290/A-controversial-dam-project-in-Camarines-Sur

Cooling down in Style
By VINCE G. LOPEZ
May 15, 2010

http://www.mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/camsur_0.jpg

Whether trying a new sport or trying to find a new adventure, Cam Sur’s Watersport Complex is a sure way to have a memorable summer. The hottest days of summer have been registered in the last few days but the season for the coolest activities is far from over. With only a few weeks left to enjoy summer, there are numerous ways to have fun in the water. Aside from white sand beaches, the Philippines is also home to numerous water sports waiting to be discovered.

Provinces have been developing their local treasures of adventure to entice local tourists. Bask in the simple joys of discovering what’s under the deep blue sea to the thrill of splashing against rocks and current in a raft. It all depends on how adventurous you want to go. Here’s a list of where and what you can do to cool down and have some fun this summer:

Snorkeling (Batangas, Palawan and Boracay)

After getting some tan and experiencing a refreshing swim, most tourists opt to go snorkeling to have a better view of what’s underneath the clear blue waters. A big school of colorful fishes is just one of the many marine animals that one can discover underneath. The vibrant colors in the depths of the sea could be one of the most memorable things you can see this summer.

One of the most interesting facts that beach bums don’t know about Batangas is that it is the center of marine biodiversity. This means that there’s a vast and colorful marine life waiting to be discovered underneath. A mere minute away from any beach or resort in the province is a whole new world waiting to be discovered and explored.

Surfing (Bagasbas, Lanuza, La Union and Siargao)

Philippine beaches have some of the friendliest waves where anyone can safely learn to surf without the risk of drowning. Trying to ride the wave for the first time is physically demanding. But the rush and thrill of being on top of a wave carrying you to the shore is truly worth it.

Bagasbas beach in Camarines Norte is popular for its rushing yet friendly waves, perfect for rookie wave riders. Bagasbas beach enables all body shapes, ages, and even those who do not have an in-depth knowledge of swimming in the open ocean to try the cool sport of surfing.

Lanuza in Surigao del Sur is another place where anyone can learn how to surf. An up-and-coming tourism spot, what makes Lanuza stand out from other surfing spots is its diverse surfing grounds. Doot Poktoy, being the most famous among these surfing grounds, has a soft sand bottom which makes it ideal for beginners.

Siargao in Surigao del Norte has a world famous break called the Cloud 9. The waves from cloud 9 are hailed as one of the top five toughest breaks in the world. The surfing experience in Siargao is now being compared to famous surf destinations such as Hawaii and Australia.

Wake Boarding (Camarines Sur)

Slowly but surely catching international and local fame, Camarines Sur’s wake park is definitely a must try for everyone, especially those wanting to splash into an enjoyable and thrilling water adventure.

The wake park consists of a 6-tower cable system that allows riders to maneuver through the man-made lake. Aside from wakeboarding, the course is a good spot to master your wake skating, knee boarding, and water-skiing tricks.

The course also poses a fine challenge to any rider who wants to enjoy a unique thrill ride. Aside from the riding in style with your wakeboard, there are also other spots in Camarines Sur that are ready to satisfy your burning passions. So if you are still riding high from the adrenaline rush, there are places like Bolan-ogan falls and Camsur’s hot springs to fizzle off.

White Water Rafting (Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Cagayan Valley)

It’s as thrilling as it looks and as safe as any other water sport in the country. White water rafting combines excitement and relaxation as after every rapid is an opportunity to enjoy an unadulterated view of nature.

Cagayan de Oro is a place of precious adventures and priceless natural beauty where white water rafting is among the top local and foreign tourist draws. Experiencing the rapids’ wrath while trying to stay balanced inside the raft is a mind-blowing experience.

There’s also Cagayan Valley’s Chico River, which also offers a world-class white water rafting experience. The struggle against the tides and the fight to get through the rapids will leave a lasting memory to anyone who wants to brave the river.

A bit more relaxed rapid awaits at the Davao River. The tame river in Davao enables even kids to join in the rollercoaster ride of adventure which makes it ideal for a family adventure.

They only have two to three flights a day to Naga.

Airphil Express has 3 to 4 flights a day.

yup...saw it too...i'm not sure if its intended for the proposed SM annex or the temporary parking area of the City Coliseum. We had an interview with the OIC of the coliseum construction that they are planning to occupy the SM annex lot until such time they finished the City Coliseum parking area. If its really for SM extension it could be true because SM Savemore Legazpi is nearing its completion and shall open its doors to our fellow bicolanos in the south this May 28 thus, transfer of SM contruction equipments and materials from Legazpi to Naga is fast and easy. :)

My wife have talked to the SM leasing just last week as they invited us to open a branch at SM Lucena and San Pablo but we declined as we would not have enough time to monitor branches located more than 4 hours from Naga.

We also do not intend to expand to more than 3 branches.

But we plan to get a bigger space in Naga and open another branch in Legazpi should SM opens in Albay.

We were told that there would be SM Naga expansion but they do not know when it would implemented- so we would not be able to get a bigger space in Naga for now.

They still have not heard of any future plans for SM City Legazpi. So our third branch would not be forthcoming.

They however confirmed that Savemore Legazpi would open this May and this would probably be followed by Savemore Sorsogon.

Other than that they are still unaware of any SM projects in Bicol.:ohno:

Richard Poon (my love) has a song entitled KUMOT AT UNAN...

Kumot At Unan

Na kumot at unan mo

[refrain]
Pangarap kita
Kahit papaano pa kita isipin
Pangarap kita
Dinggin mo sana ang aking awitin
Pangarap kita

That's what I have telling (in jest of course) the SM people to hurry up with the SM Legazpi before I reach the age of 50 as would still be young enough for that extra work, for an extra branch :lol:

If they would open on a lot longer period of time- I would be too old for a new branch in Legazpi. Five years is just enough for me as would still be younger then- but the sooner, the better.

Then, for sure it's a temporary parking area... SM Naga expansion probably may materialize after the completion of the city coliseum.... that's not too far, anyway. Nag City Coliseum is targeted to be completed this June. That means by July, most probably we would see the SM Naga expansion.

Is This How Love's Supposed to Feel by Ben lee
You kissed me slow
It happened way too fast
I told myself
There's no way it would last
Is this how love's supposed to feel?
Is this how love's supposed to feel?

And all my friends
Are saying it's not right
I want to sleep
Beside you every night
Is this how love's supposed to feel?
Is this how love's supposed to feel?

So say you'll stay
I promise I won't go
There's just one thing
I really need to know
Is this how love's supposed to feel?
Is this how love's supposed to feel?

Is this how love's supposed to feel?

^^I thought that too... NCF has produced topnotchers also in this field, if i'm not mistaken. I just don't know if their passing rate is declining.

Why don't they take Education :D... The demand for teachers will be forever and once you're in the field, you'll never get kicked out :D....

I was surprised that Aquinas University of Legazpi and Naga College Foundation were in that list.:ohno:

But otherwise, the CHED should implement closure of these nursing schools
if they are no performing well. I would like to see it happen.

We have too many nursing schools anyway.

^^Too many nursing schools that offer, some of them, low quality of education....

It's just right for CHED to do that....
