Suspected NPA bomber nabbed in Camarines Sur (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/star/20100612/tph-suspected-npa-bomber-nabbed-camarine-5994a93.html)

MANILA, Philippines - Army troops in Camarines Sur arrested on Wednesday a suspected New People’s Army bomber, foiling a repeat of the bloody ambush that claimed the lives of four soldiers in the province last month.

In a statement, the Army’s 9th Infantry Division said the NPA member, identified as Noel Alarcon, was apprehended by elements of the 902nd Brigade, who were securing a local infrastructure project.

First Lieutenant Michael Morales, leader of the arresting team, said he was conducting patrols in Barangay Kinahulugan in Lagonoy town when a village official informed him about the presence of the rebel.

“I was told by a barangay official that one of the perpetrators of the roadside bombing in Presentacion town was mingling with the crowd in the village. I immediately rushed to the scene together with the tipster and arrested the suspect,” Morales said.

Alarcon then brought the Army soldiers to the site of two improvised landmines which were positioned near the road in the village. Authorities believe that Alarcon and his comrades planned to ambush soldiers who had transported some supplies early this week.

“We were lucky that we avoided passing through established pathways,” Morales said.

Army 9th ID spokesman Maj. Harold Cabunoc said Alarcon had admitted to have laid the bombs to ambush soldiers who would pass along that road. The suspect, however, insisted that he did not participate in the Presentacion town ambush on May 30.

“The landmines were recovered. They were disarmed so these can no longer be used,” Cabunoc said.

Col. Cirilo Torralba, commander of the 902nd Brigade, said he has coordinated with their legal officer to file cases against the suspected rebel. “We will pursue a criminal case against the suspect to seek justice for the death and injuries of my soldiers,” he said, referring to the casualties in the Presentacion ambush.

Torralba said they will also file before the Commission on Human Rights a complaint against the NPA for its use of landmines, which has been prohibited by the Mine Ban Treaty of 1997.

The ambush in Presentacion resulted to the deaths of four soldiers and the wounding of three others.

The ambushed troops were pursuing the insurgents who attacked soldiers securing an infrastructure project in the province. Around 300 soldiers from the Third Scout Rangers Battalion and the 42nd Infantry Battalion have been deployed to run after the perpetrators of the ambush. - By Alexis Romero (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

BIR bares resolve in running after tax cheats
Naga City (11 June) -- Determined in its campaign to run after tax evaders, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here has ordered the closure of one business establishment for failing to declare its real income and warned others which continue to defy payment or appropriate taxes to the government.

RDO 65 Revenue District Officer Socorro La Fuente, along with BIR Regional Director Atty. Diosdado Mendoza, recently led the implementation of closure order to Triboo Grill located at Mayon Avenue here as part of the BIR's OPLAN KANDADO campaign.

Triboo Grill, one of the fast-food chains here and owned by one Gina Dy, has been constantly reminded of their obligation for several times early last year. The establishment's non-compliance of the BIR's request led to the foreclosure of the said establishment early this week.

After settling its tax deficiency, however, TRIBOO Grill was allowed to re-open three days after it was ordered closed by BIR.

"We remain resolute in our crusade to remind our businessmen of their obligation in declaring their actual income. We use this declaration as our basis on how much tax they should be returning to the government," La Fuente stated.

La Fuente also stressed that the closure order is the agency's way of conveying the message that BIR is bent on running after tax delinquent establishments that are continuously ignoring their call for honest compliance of their income declaration.

"Let this serve as a lesson for our businessmen out there who still choose to ignore our plea for honest declaration of their income," La Fuente said in an interview.

Oplan Kandado is a flag ship project of Commissioner Sixto Esquivel allowing BIR to padlock establishment who are cheating on their taxes thru a deliberate intent not to declare their real income.

This is also pursuant to BIR Revenue Memorandum Order No. 3-2009 which "amends and consolidates the guidelines in the conduct of surveillance and stock-taking activities and implements the administrative sanction of suspension and temporary closure of business." Villagers cite Army for advocacy on enviro care
Pili, Camarines Sur (11 June) -- Government soldiers braved the scorching heat of the sun and planted some 2,000 mangrove seedlings along the shorelines of Cagsao a coastal village in Calabanga town in Camarines Sur.

Major Harold Cabunoc, 9th ID spokesperson, said that a platoon of soldiers joined the mangrove planting participated in by stakeholders from different organizations, including residents of Cagsao village.

"We prefer to plant trees that will benefit the people rather than fire bombs that will maim and cause the loss of life and damage to property," Cabunoc said.

"Started in August 2009, the reforestation project in this coastal village Cagsao was a success since 90 percent of the planted mangroves has survived in the area," Cabunoc said.

At least hundreds of participants planted over the weekend more than 2,000 mangrove seedlings in the shorelines adjacent to the first reforestation site.

Residents of the fishing village of Cagsao have previously complained about the dwindling fish catch due to over-fishing.

Mang Renato, a local fisherman, said that with the mangrove trees attracting more fishes and crabs, fishermen do not have to go far to catch them.

"I have personally seen the presence of more crabs and other sea creatures a few months ago when the trees we planted last year started to grow," he said.

The village was handpicked as the recipient of the project due to the strong support provided by its local government officials and residents.

Town Mayor Evelyn Yu, together with the barangay (village) officials of Cagsao, came with their family members to show their support to the project.

"We are very thankful to all of our partners for continuously supporting this project. I would also like to credit the residents of this coastal village (Cagsao) for their active participation to protect this future mangrove forest that will contribute towards environmental protection in general," said Yu.

Lt. Col. Erwin De Asis, Civil-Military Operations officer of the 9th Infantry Division and one of the participants, said that he had previously joined similar reforestation projects, particularly in Panay Island.

"It is heart-warming to see that the local people are actively participating in this undertaking. It is the Army's job to assist the people in the various peace and development programs that will benefit them. This is one way to end the communist insurgency problem in our country," De Asis, a veteran of Mindanao's conflict, narrated.

Mangrove tree planting project is supported by a number of cause-oriented groups because they believed that mangrove trees can protect coastal areas from erosion, storm surge during typhoons which is a regular occurrence in the Bicol region. The Philippine Pearl Boutique-Hotel

http://architecton.ru/projects/resorts/reso3/full2.jpg

The Philippine Pearl Boutique-hotel is located in the province of Camarines Sur, on the island of Sabitang Laya and has an area of 36 hectares. The shape of the island reminds of a speed yacht cutting ocean waves with its sharp nose. Coastal strips of the island are intended for villa settlements, villas having direct access to the beach and drowning in a tropical park.

At the western side of the island there is an over-water villa village, retaining the original contours of the seashore. Villas are linked with a path suspended over the water that connects them to the island. At the elevated part of the island the hotel’s main building stands, its shape repeating the shape of the hill.

A unique SPA centre which is part of the project creates the perfect conditions for health improvement and recreation. The design also provides for courtyards with swimming pools and a sea view at SPA villas.

The walls of swimming pools are made of transparent acrylic, and the surrounding landscape and the ocean skyline can be seen through them.http://architecton.ru/index.htm

Solons mull President Aquino’s top priority sectors (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/gma/20100611/tph-independence-day-2010-112-years-112-bac8aa0.html)
By Yahoo! Southeast Asia Editors – June 11th, 2010
By Alexander Villafania, loQal.ph

QUEZON CITY – Amid celebrations after the proclamation of a new Chief Executive, some of the country’s legislators are already expecting President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to prioritize a number of proposals.

Camarines Sur Representative Luis Villafuerte said the president should focus on the country’s education budget, which should go to improving classrooms, buying new books, and increasing the salaries of teachers.

Villafuerte also stressed that the president should push to pass into laws the development of the country’s aquaculture industry, and the creation Department of Information and Communications Technology.

Senator Allan Peter Cayetano, who supported Nacionalista Party presidential candidate Manual Villar, said the new president must ensure that the Freedom on Information (FOI) bill is passed, which he stressed should stamp out corruption. “The president must deliver on this promise but I also believe he can achieve this,” he said.

His sister, Senator Pia Cayetano, who ran for re-election under Villar’s ticket, also reflected on her brother’s statements regarding the FOI, though there are ways to go around the issue if it is not passed into law.

“I hear that he is supporting it, though we understand that there are lots of provisions of the FOI that can be implemented in the executive level,” she said

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said Aquino must look into implementation of existing laws first than giving his attention to new laws. “We have passed 650 Republic Acts but I believe he will be up to the challenge. I know him for 12 years and he’ll be fit for the job just as he’s always been,” he said.

No DILG for Binay
Ellen Tordesillas

‘Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo will be given this politically strategic position of DILG secretary.’

VICE-PRESIDENT elect-Jejomar Binay has set aside subtlety and made known his desire to be appointed secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

"If you go by my experience and expertise, if the incoming President would allow, I would like to be appointed secretary of the DILG," Binay said yesterday after their proclamation as winners of the May 10 elections.

I seriously doubt Binay will get his wish, even if many in Aquino’s inner circle were his supporters. I understand it’s Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo who will be given this politically strategic position.

Robredo meets the criteria of the Aquino administration of presenting a fresh and dynamic face. Robredo was the 2000 Ramon Magsaysay awardee for government service.

Although the DILG position was offered to Binay before the start of the election campaign to entice him join the Aquino camp, Aquino had said a week before election that the offer no longer stands. "I am no longer confident that the good mayor and I share a common vision and therefore the past offer then is no longer valid."

Binay has pledged cooperation to Aquino and it is expected that the former would be given an important role but not DILG or any position that he could use as a launching pad for his 2016 presidential bid.

That’s rubbing salt on Mar Roxas’ wound.

Although she will miss turning over her Ms. Cam Sur crown this summer, Linda is raring to go and prove her worth inside the Big Brother house.

Yun! Gari ako kani si Kuya Kim Atienza ah. Hehehe. Dapat palan so Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila ay pwede man apudun na "Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Maynila".

hmm...

dalubhasaan = gagawin kang dalubhasa

iyun siguro kaya naging Dalubhasaan ang College! :D

baka ika si Kuya Jhid Atienza!

"Pamantasan" is the word used for a school with a university status, so I guess to differentiate it from a "college" they coined it as "dalubhasaan"

i must say Jovit the singer of Batangas who sounds like Ariel Pineda is a very strong contender also MArkki Stroem (looks and talent combined)... just my opinion...

I tried to channel surf between the World Cup games and Pilipinas Got Talent kasubanggi and watched for the first time the Naga girl perform. She really defines the show at siguro she must really love playing those instruments ta ako kaidtong aki pa ay pinirit lang akong mag-piano lessons at pigdudulagan ko pa kaidto so piano teacher ko para magkawat kaya mayo halos akong naukudan. Hehehe. Thirteen instruments ba ang aram niya? Wow! Makainggitun man na marhay sa sarong mayong katalent-talent. Hehehehe.

I think she has a big chance of winning the competition although the biggest cheers during that night was reserved for the Jovit guy whose voice reminds everyone of Arnel Pineda of the Journey band.

Ako Ms Ina mas nasunuan ko c performance nya subanggi.. Sa PEX, nirarank sya sa 3rd or 4th place most of the time.. I agree jhid, mostly gusto ay si Jovit ang manalo at si Alakim.. Still, she is a darkhorse..magayun man si performance and unique talaga sa others :)

No DILG for Binay
Ellen Tordesillas

‘Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo will be given this politically strategic position of DILG secretary.’

Noynoy will definitely not offer the DILG post to Binay. Giving that to Binay will give him powers as if he is the President because he will have direct control over the LGUs from the provincial to the barangay level and aside from that, I think DILG has also supervision over the Philippine National Police.

"Pamantasan" is the word used for a school with a university status, so I guess to differentiate it from a "college" they coined it as "dalubhasaan"
yung na nga ata ang dahilan dyan... :D

Hehehehe.

I think she has a big chance of winning the competition although the biggest cheers during that night was reserved for the Jovit guy whose voice reminds everyone of Arnel Pineda of the Journey band.
haha! Ngunyan ko lang daw nagustuhan magadal kang instruments... kang aki pa man ako, habuon ko maski ngani kanta... tsk tsk!
anyway, it's not too late to learn... :D

my suggestion to all who wish to get the discipline from music or arts -- start developing the talent at a very young age from the moment you spot it hone the talent immediately... also it pays to have the support from the parents really..

hayy nako me either, i like piano and violin specifically. tried playing the guitar when i was in high school on my own but didn't went well  ngayon i just look for mp3s with piano and violin accompaniment. it's never too late though to learn them but it will be hard to twitch it in my sched...

if Jeline could have played all 12 instruments, i honestly dnt know if he will win. i have nothing against Jovit din, he is of no doubt wiht a good voice mala Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi ang dating ng harshness ng voice nya.. but we all know how Filipinos react to contestants who came from poor families.. in my observation, his winning streak is 60% talent and 40% "awa" from the Filipinos (that's because a lot were touched by his life story) that 60% talent is still close to a hundred but talking about how he won came from the viewers.. so.. he is still deserving. it's his time to shine.. his effort, fate and faith brought him to where he is right now.

Filipinos usually like "underdogs", look at PBB, almost all winners came from a poor/financially needy families

That's the reason why I don't like to watch ABS CBN versions of US based talent shows- even their local game shows as they keep on going into the contestant's personal lives even if it has no bearing with the show.:ohno::ohno:

They turn brilliant shows to pure rubbish.

Talentadong Pinoy, Pinoy Idol/Philippine Idol and even Are You the Next Big Star are pure talent shows. They produced real talents like Gian Magdangal and Francheska Farr with no emotional blackmail involved.

I hope this network would stop feeding trash to the Filipinos.

Their local Bicolano shows are worth watching though.

Kaogma: The hottest festival in the world

World-class cable park: Camsur Watersports Complex’s 6 tower cable park, the favorite of international wakeboarders and home to the 5th Philippine Wakeboard Nationals

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/88/travel5.jpg

It’s almost 3 a.m. in the Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) but the pummeling sounds of intoxicated celebrations, the DJ’s after-party playlist, and another karaoke machine are vibrating simultaneously through the thin walls of our cozy wooden cabin. Unable to get sleep, I’m wondering mostly what the hell I am doing in bed at the peak of Camsur’s hottest festival, and a little bit about what time the parties will end.

Dubbed the “World’s Hottest Festival,” Kaogma commemorates Camarines Sur’s 431st foundation day this year, and is a nine-day fiesta jam-packed with entertainment, intense competition, and extreme sports action. The festival is definitely non-traditional and probably the first of its kind in the country.

On the plane ride to Camsur, boarded with me are a handful of riders trudging wakeboarding gear and strutting beach wear. As soon as we hit our destination at the Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC), the riders embrace the place as if it is paradise leaving behind their luggage in the shuttle as they dash towards the wakeboarding course with open arms. For first-timers, the complex is vastly impressive as it offers a variety of accommodations fit for all budgets-trailers, tiki huts, wooden cabins and luxury villas; and it’s a venue for every kind of extreme sport imaginable. For those who return to Camsur often, like the riders on the plane itching to get down, it is a haven for gritty playground action.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7374/travel5b.jpg

During May, CWC becomes home of the fiery Kaogma Festival. This year the festival ran from May 22 to 30 and was jumpstarted by a parade led by the newly re-elected Governor Lray Villafuerte and Kristine Hermosa, trailed by a star-studded entourage. Governor Lray says the theme “Everybody Happy” is about offering and creating events that are bound to bring everyone joy, with particular focus on sports adventure and tourism. “If you come to Kaogma, basically it’s mostly sports activities like 4X4, motocross, wakeboarding, mountain bike (and) boxing.” Governor Lray integrates extreme sports with Kaogma as a way to differentiate the event from other more traditional festivals in the country. “If you’re into extreme sports,” he says proudly, “Camsur is the place to be.”
But aside from the sports, Kaogma also offers a variety of events, all of which are free. Some occur early in the morning, some end early in the morning. A more traditional event is the Miss Kaogma beauty pageant which presents Camarines Sur’s finest and most elegant women. Charming host Marc Nelson made the girls nervous on this glamorous night while an acoustic serenade by Matteo Guidicelli garnered girl shrieks. After the event, the top five of Miss Kaogma headed off to Lago del Rey in CWC along with other celebrities who participated in this year’s Celebrity Aquafest Challenge to load up, celebrate and party under the stars while dancing barefoot in the sand.

The main sports event of Kaogma is the 5th Philippine Wakeboard Nationals that ran for two days, May 28 and 29, amidst the intense summer heat. Spectators did not mind getting their shoulders scorched as long as they were witness to some of the best talents in the country showing off skills, style and technique in the world-class cable wakeboarding course. Chief Judge for the event was world champion wakeboarder Donald Shelbrick who vows that there is growing talent among Filipino wakeboarders, even if the sport is still fairly new to the country. Daniel also notes that the CWC 6 tower cable park is one of his favorites in the whole world, accommodating beginners, intermediate, advanced and professional riders. “Every year that I come back they add something new,” he adds. Co-judges for the event were international riders Mike McComb and Wade Halbert.
On last night of the Kaogma Festival, the 12-hour Musicfest was expected to go on until the wee hours of the morning. The Bloom Brothers charmed the audience while Delara ripped the air with ska vocals. However, Itchyworms’ well-supported set was rudely interrupted when chaos broke loose and what seemed to be an ingenious and planned rain shower of rocks and stones was violently targeted towards the audience. Like ants running away from water, the sight of the crowd fleeing the scene caused enough panic for the band to stop playing, and the show had to be cut short. The last act for the night, Rivermaya, never saw stage. The flurry of commotion was frightening, though admittedly adrenaline-pumping, since in the end no one seemed to be seriously hurt. On the shuttle back to our cabin with the bands, they seemed mostly unshaken. Perhaps every music concert has its share of craziness, and this is just one of the many these bands have been witness to.

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8481/travel5c.jpg

Governor Lray is credited for CWC and having raised Camsur from being the 39th poorest province to being the 10th richest in terms of income, and is now recognized as a world-class tourist destination. The business-minded politician sees his legacy laid out like a business plan, crediting the use of sports tourism to target a niche market as a solution to poverty. The result is profit, and all the profit goes back to the province. A Gawad Kalinga (GK) village in every municipality and scholarships for all their elementary students are just a few of the many benefits sports tourism has provided for them.

The Kaogma Festival is one of the biggest events in Camsur, and is soon expected to become even bigger as they continue to expand facilities and create new scenes. Leaving Camsur, I have a list of stories I can’t wait to tell. From surviving rock concert nightmares, to the intense wakeboarding competition (you can try wakeboarding as well in their beginner’s pool), to coming home one night buzzed from a party located in the middle of the lake... come next summer, you should make sure you are celebrating the hottest festival in the world.

The Kaogma Festival adds heat to the country’s feverish summer temperature as it promises hotter events, hotter sports action and they ensure that you will leave with a solid happy ending.

MANILA, Philippines--PNOC-Exploration Corp. has earmarked P6.2 billion this year to further intensify the exploration and development of prospective petroleum and coal resources within its service contracts.

“In order to sustain the Philippines’ growing economy, our search for indigenous energy sources must be intensified and firmly reinforced with the support of our government, the industry and local communities,” said PNOC-EC president and CEO Rafael del Pilar.

The amount earmarked for 2010 is slightly higher than the previous year’s budget of roughly P5 billion, he added.

According to Del Pilar, the amount would be used partly for the drilling of the Camago Malampaya appraisal well, which was originally scheduled for 2009 but was pushed to this year due to the unavailability of a drilling rig.

The activity, he said, intended to verify the pressure of the Camago reservoir to check its connectivity to the Malampaya reservoir in offshore Palawan, which is covered by Service Contract (SC) 38.

Del Pilar explained that if the gas in the Camago and Malampaya was connected, it would more or less confirm earlier valuation that the area could contain a little more than 3 billion cubic feet of gas. If the two reservoirs are not connected, then the consortium operating the gas fields can consider the Camago separately as a new reserve, which will be added to the Malampaya reserve.

PNOC-EC, the upstream petroleum and coal exploration arm of state-owned Philippine National Oil Co., holds a 10-percent stake in SC 38, while Shell Exploration BV and Chevron each has a 45-percent stake.

The company is also investing in its other service contracts—SC 37 in the Cagayan basin; SC 43 within the Ragay Gulf and onshore Bondoc Peninsula; SC 47 in offshore
Mindoro; SC 57 in the Calamian Islands; SC 58 or the West Calamian in offshore northwest Palawan; SC 59 in West Balabac, and SC 63 in East Sabina in southwest Palawan.

“Alongside its petroleum exploration projects, [PNOC-EC] has strengthened its position in the coal industry by expanding its coal business goal of maximizing the development and utilization of indigenous coal resources, thus reducing the country’s need for imported coal,” Del Pilar said.

PNOC-EC is gearing up for the implementation of its Isabela coal power plant project within the area covered by its coal operating contract (COC) 122.

The project involves the development of a coal mine and the construction of a power plant that will use the coal in the area. The company is reportedly in talks with diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. on a possible partnership for the venture.

Once implemented, the project will reportedly be the first of its kind in the country that will use progressive strip mining and rehabilitation method to extract coal.

The company also continues to operate coal terminals in Zamboanga Sibugay, Cebu, Batangas and North Harbor in Manila.

first post with pic nga po :D

hayy nako me either, i like piano and violin specifically. tried playing the guitar when i was in high school on my own but didn't went well  ngayon i just look for mp3s with piano and violin accompaniment. it's never too late though to learn them but it will be hard to twitch it in my sched...

if Jeline could have played all 12 instruments, i honestly dnt know if he will win. i have nothing against Jovit din, he is of no doubt wiht a good voice mala Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi ang dating ng harshness ng voice nya.. but we all know how Filipinos react to contestants who came from poor families.. in my observation, his winning streak is 60% talent and 40% "awa" from the Filipinos (that's because a lot were touched by his life story) that 60% talent is still close to a hundred but talking about how he won came from the viewers.. so.. he is still deserving. it's his time to shine.. his effort, fate and faith brought him to where he is right now.

Korek!at syempre Proud kita dahil kita lang sa Naga ang Igwang Arog ki Jeline na Grabing Talent isipon mu 12 instrument kaya nyang itugtug..Wow:)

I got to watch Pilipinas Got Talent last Saturday, it was very clear that Jovit was the choice of the audience. In fairness, it is not ABS who was choosing but the text votes. The judges' choice based on their comments was the acrobat brothers from Cainta. In face Kris invited them to perform during Noynoy's inauguration. Maybe Jovit will be the next Nora Aunor based on the audience reaction during the finals. He got 49% of the votes. I would have chosen either the ventriloquist or Jeline as winner.

Many GMA talents are excellent but the network is below par compared to ABS-CBN when promoting their talents. You can gauge who the more popular talents among the two networks by identifying those who are being hired by advertisers as their endorsers. Advertisers will only hire talents if they know that they will be able to entice customers. ABS talents are way ahead in this department maybe 10 to 1 over the GMA talents.

Sorry OT na kita.

well, there are the talented, the stars and the talented stars... :D
ABS' hold on the provinces is proof of their strength.. that's why many endorser's opt for their talents... however, with GMA's battle in getting their presence felt in the provinces, I hope this will bring in variance and stiffer competition for both networks...

Hotel group to develop $1-billion bay project (http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/top-stories/18757-hotel-group-to-develop-1-billion-bay-project)

BY BEN ARNOLD O. DE VERA Reporter

The company running the gaming hub Resorts World Manila is eyeing expansion in other parts of the country on top of development in Pagcor City.

Kingson Sian, Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. president, told a roundtable with reporters and editors of The Manila Times on Thursday that they are interested to invest in “other Philippine islands,” although he declined to elaborate.

Sian said that Travellers International Hotel Group within this year will begin the development of the 31-hectare “Resorts World Bayshore” project.

According to him, this project would cost close to a billion dollars.

Travellers International Hotel Group is a joint venture of Andrew Tan-led Alliance Global Group Inc. and the Malaysian Genting group.

Besides Travellers International Hotel Group, Aruze Corp. of Japan, Enrique Razon-led Bloombury Investments Holdings Inc. and SM Investments Corp. were also granted licenses to establish and operate gaming and entertainment activities at the Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City complex.

Sian said that their company is optimistic about the domestic tourism sector, adding that the country is blessed with abundant natural resources, and warm and hospitable people.

“There’s no reason why we should not have a thriving tourism industry,” he said.

What makes tourists come back to the Philippines, Sian added, is the efficient service that they experience.

He said that some foreign tourists have the wrong impression that the Philippines is not a safe destination, because Filipinos themselves seem to promote that idea.

In order to keep tourism investments both from locals and foreigners pouring in, Sian suggested that the incoming government put in place a business-friendly climate.

“The ingredients are there, we just need a spark,” he said.

Sian added the eight-hectare Resorts World Manila complex, Travellers International Hotel Group’s flagship project, is nearing completion.

He said that the shopping complex Newport Mall, which open next week, would showcase up to 60 stores of high-end brands such as Dunhill, Gucci and Prada, about 30 restaurants and four cinemas.

This mall would be easily accessible from the already operating luxury hotels Marriott and Maxims.

Sian said that a budget hotel, Remington, is set to open by the middle of next year, as they want to make Resorts World Manila accessible to people from all walks of life.

Also, a 1,500-seat performing arts theater and a by-invitation only lifestyle hub would soon rise within the complex.

Resorts World Manila will also hold a four-day party on November 25 to 28 to promote the integrated entertainment hub.

“There will be concerts, gaming tournaments and fashion shows. We also plan to bring in foreign acts,” Sian said.

“We want Resorts World Manila to be known as ‘the’ entertainment place,” he added.

Sian said that Resorts World Manila is attracting up to 10,000 visitors a day, of which about a fifth are foreigners mostly from neighboring Asian countries.

He added that they expect the number of visitors to shoot up to 20,000 daily once the mall opens.

Sian said that even as Resorts World Manila began operations during the onslaught of the global financial crisis, customers kept coming to their facilities.

“The global recession had no impact on our operations at all,” he noted.

Sian said that there is a market for their world-class products and services here.

He added that Travellers International Hotel Group has invested about $500 million since 2007.

Sian said that the company could infuse as much as $600 million in the development of Resorts World Manila.

At present, the group employs 3,500, up significantly from just 200 last year.

i have a friend who is a blogger too who works at Casureco II

take a look at the point of view of one of their employees

In the middle of the crossfire
by Enteng
posted last June 9, 2010.

June 11th.

The last time they came here they came in numbers, the atmosphere was tense, the gates were the 38th parallel. It was picturesque of Edsa Dos. Only that I wasn't there. Some of my co-employees and I were soothingly gulping cold San Mig Lights at Gerry's grill having been tipped by radio that an angry mob is on its way.

"Mabuti nang talsot kesa bugbog."

This coming Friday the threats are real and near. They are talking about thousands taking into our gates their complaints. The angry mob wants heads to roll (figuratively, I hope.). They are closing down Almeda and Del Rosario, even routing those vehicles from Legazpi to take the Cararayan shortcut.

I do not know what will happen this coming Friday. Only that the employees are instructed to be here in full force, that we can't go on personal leaves of absences or go home before the prescribed 5 PM.

Yes, we are going to be in the middle of a crossfire, and it aint gonna be pretty. So, as small and defenseless as we are we are already thinking about contingency. Dammit, I did not sign up for this shit! These are the plans:

1. Dig out foxholes and hide until the tension subsides.
2. Dig a tunnel from the office and to have the end outside the gates of Casureco II.
3. Provide an improvized ladder and get out through the back way (Villa Corazon).
4. Strip, run to the gates like headless chickens and hope they let us out.
5. Beg, beg and beg they let us out.
6. Make a very big kite and windsurf until we get to SM.
7. Buy 2 cases of San Mig light and ride the night out.

Out of those options, the last one is the most realistic. Oh well, they can protest outside all they want, I am gonna be drunk anyway. And yes, they are barking at the wrong tree. It's not my fault. Empleyado lang po ako digdi, naglalapigot para sa pamilya ko. Dae mandamay nin inosente. Peace out!

Iriga crowns 3 queens in unique beauty contest
Moviegoer
By NESTOR CUARTERO
June 13, 2010, 6:19pm

A unique beauty contest in pictu-resque farm town Iriga, Camarines Sur, that prides itself as being anchored on nationalism and patriotism inevitably went on minus the obligatory swimsuit competition, standard fare in any contest of this nature.

Not that there’s anything unpatriotic about a beautiful girl caught in a swimsuit, but, as pageant organizer and Iriga City Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmen explains, the move is meant to protect the candidates from possible exploitation.

The search for three beauty queens in a common pageant in the City Colosseum downtown last June 11 was grand – it had fireworks, confetti, star power, a full-packed crowd, and gun salute – as it was different.

For one, it had nationalism as theme. The pageant opened with an audio-visual presentation of historic events in the Philippines, faces and figures that impacted on Filipino society through the years.

When the 24 candidates were presented in the evening gown competition, they wore gowns made out of piña cloth. They answered questions from a board of jurors tasked to challenge their intelligence and composure with thought-provoking but also nationalistic issues.

At the end of a grueling two-hour plus pageant, three young Bicolanas went home with beauty queen titles: Casy Ann Austria, Miss Bicol Tourism; Princess Armillos, Miss Riconada; and Linda Backlund, Miss Iriga 2010.

It was a coincidence that all three winners, according to Mayor Gazmen, came from poor families. One of the judges, Powerdance artistic director Douglas Nierras, said he was amazed at how the girls could look so good, so smooth and all that, considering their quite humble backgrounds. They all moved so well, he gushed.

Newly elected Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, who was also a member of the board of judges, said the Iriga pageant was the best provincial beauty contest she has judged thus far. And Lucy has seen them all as she is a frequent and favorite judge in such contests.

Three other judges – GMA actor Mike Tan, Eugene Asis of People’s Journal and Nestor Cuartero – agreed the 2010 batch was beautiful in every sense.

Many, if not all of the girls, had lapses in English, but in this day and age, which young person hasn’t? Little wonder, our favorite question during the interview portion, held at the pre-pageant at Iriga Plaza Hotel, was about jejemon, which some of the girls claimed they don’t practice.

Iriga’s triple treat of a beauty pa-geant was a week-long affair which included workshops, training in make-up, socialization, and immersion through visits in some of the city’s 36 barangays. In the video presentation that preceded the pageant, Gazmen took pride in the socio-civic aspect of the contest which brought the girls on a visit to the homes of the Oyango tribe in the mountainous regions of Iriga. They also sat in at a seminar on the rights of senior citizens.

The Miss Iriga beauty pageant is conducted yearly in time for the City Pintakasi, in celebration of the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, Iriga’s patron saint. The stunningly lovely Iza Calzado hosted the event.
