I miss my youngers years when we would push ourselves through thick crowd during the parade to witness the performances of the participants and of course their beautiful majorettes.

I like the new flooring of the Plaza Quezon. I just wonder the signification of what appears to me to be a blue sun with and eight reds rays on a blue background. It looks much wider now with the removal of the flagpole (was it moved somewhere else?).

I just noted the solirtary dangling lightbulb on a long electrical power line hanging accross the plaza which spoils the view. I hope the city can instead put up flood lights to provide the needed lighting.:)

Let me just highlight that the celebration we are having right now is not Naga's fiesta but of the whole Bicol Region. Naga only plays host to this big regional event.

Happy Fiesta sa gabos sa Bicol.

2 Lakas governors ask Aquino to retain Robredo (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/201222/2-lakas-governors-ask-aquino-to-retain-robredo)

09/16/2010 | 08:59 PM

Two governors from Mindanao who belong to the political party of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has asked President Benigno Aquino to retain Secretary Jesse Robredo as head of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) acting Gov. Ansaruddin Alonto Adiong and his brother, Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal Adiong Jr., said Robredo still has the confidence of local government officials in the southern Philippine region.

“Given his sterling achievements, we believe he can successfully reform the concerned institution," said Ansaruddin of Robredo, a former Naga City mayor and recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award.

Robredo has been appointed to head the DILG only in an acting capacity as Aquino earlier admitted having "differences in style" with him.

Ansaruddin, who concurrently sits as the DILG-ARMM regional secretary, also said Robredo should not be judged solely for what happened during the August 23 hostage incident in Manila that left eight Hong Kong tourists dead. “We also believe that the integrity, competence and trust on Sec. Robredo must never be put into doubt on that incident alone."

Mamintal urged President Aquino not to discount Robredo’s contributions to the Muslim communities in the Philippines.

“Since [he] assumed office, he has initiated plans and programs to reach out to Muslim communities. Given his style of leadership, we believe he can bring much needed reforms in the DILG," he said.

The five provinces under the ARMM are Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

The Lanao del Sur governor stressed that “justice" should be given to Robredo amid persistent calls for his resignation due to the government’s failure to properly handle the hostage tragedy.

The DILG oversees the functions of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“To our mind, this is unfair and unjust for a man whose integrity, competence and dedication have brought him to what he is now," Mamintal added.

The two Mindanao governors were not the first public officials to throw support to the embattled DILG secretary. Among Robredo’s supporters are former Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca and former Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio. [See: Groups push for Robredo's retention in Cabinet] - Mark Dalan Merueñas/KBK, GMANews.TV

Sen. Santiago defends Robredo, scores Puno and PNP (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/200842/sen-santiago-defends-robredo-scores-puno-and-pnp)
SOPHIA DEDACE, GMANews.TV
09/12/2010 | 03:04 PM

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Sunday emerged as an unlikely ally of beleaguered Secretary Jesse Robredo, saying it would be a waste of talent if the chief of Interior and Local Government does not get a second chance.

At same time, the senator questioned the appointment of his deputy, Undersecretary Rico Puno, whose business deals with the police and military establishments, she said, constitutes a conflict of interest.

In an interview on radio dzBB, Santiago criticized Puno who was given administrative supervision over the police.

As the controversy rages over the bungled police rescue of Hong Kong tourists held hostage by a dismissed police captain on Aug. 23, and who among the civilian and police officials should take the blame for the way the 11-hour incident ended in a bloody carnage, Santiago defended Robredo – the interior and local government chief who did not have authority over the police.

The former Naga City mayor drew criticisms for supposedly mishandling the hostage crisis at the Quirino Grandstand, where eight tourists from Hong Kong were killed. Robredo later admitted he was kept "out of the loop" at the height of the crisis because President Benigno Aquino III assigned him to manage local governments and Puno to supervise the Philippine National Police.

"Robredo is a Ramon Magsaysay awardee. It will be such a waste if he will be removed from his post because he has just barely started. But if I were in his situation, I would have gone (to Quirino Grandstand) anyway. But I think we should give him a second chance," said Santiago in Pilipino.

He was seen as the highest government official who went to the scene of carnage after the dead and surviving hostages were already taken out of the Hong Thai Travel bus where dismissed Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza held, who was brandishing police-issued M-16 assault rifle, held hostage 21 tourists from Hong Kong and the staff of the travel agency.

In the case of Puno, whose company was involved with the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Santiago also raised the problem of conflict of interest. "Puno should not be at the DILG because of conflict of interest," she said.

A profile of Puno issued by Malacañang showed that he headed the Far East Ballistics Corp. from 1992 to 1995, and was responsible for "policies for the improvement and development in the production of ammunition.

The profile added that Puno was instrumental in "creating new markets for the products of" Far East Ballistics "as he opened its doors" to both the PNP and AFP.

Santiago, who is on leave due to hypothyroidism, said she will make it a point to attend the hearings when members of the Congress sit as the Commission on Appointments (CA).

She told dzBB, she is keen on invoking Section 20 of the CA rules so that incompetent Cabinet officials will not get confirmed to the post.

Section 20 of the Rules of the CA empowers any member of the commission to suspend the appointment of any government official that needs its confirmation.

Santiago then said that if anyone has to be removed from his post in connection with the Aug. 23 tragedy, it has to be PNP head Director General Jesus Verzosa based on the doctrine of command responsibility. However, Verzosa, who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 by December, has opted for an early retirement this month. —VS, GMANews.TV

Yes, indeed it was. The winners in the eliminations in their respective districts were the ones participated in the Bicol Regional Military Parade. This is better since it shortens the parade.

But one thing I miss is the participation of big schools: Ateneo, USI, UNEP, LCC, NCF, BU, Aquinas. The competition without them is somewhat boring. I remember the cheering of Ateneans and UNCeans when their schools are being called as the winners.

my last dawn procession was more than 15 years ago and indeed the large crowds and the long, long lines spell the difference. ang layo na ng imahen ni INA, ang haba pa ng prusisyon.

it was a moving scene to see people from all wealks of life - young and old, women and men, poor and rich. two simultaneous masses were held -- one inside the Cathedral, the other at the Cathedral patio. the day's masses will be done this way.

VIVA EL DIVINO ROSTRO! VIVA LA VIRGEN!

at a time like this it's wisest not to take your car. best to just wear your sneakers and light clothes and walk, walk, walk. much faster than taking a ride!

our jesuit guest from legaspi just arrived after almost 3.5 hrs of travel na nakatindog pa!

streets are filled with people. can be overwhelming. the 24-hr restaurants at the centro -- Jollibee, two Bigg's stores, 2 McDo's-- were all filled with people after the procession/ Mass this morning. we were at Bigg;s and many customers were growing irate. the staff were simply overwhelmed with orders that it was taking more than 30 mins to serve orders.

CamSur Governor Hails Success of Ironman Tilt
Manila Bulletin - Friday, September 17
MANILA, Philippines - Camarines Sur Governor LRay Villafuerte hailed the recently-held Ironman 70.3 Philippines as the "hottest" triathlon event in the world after the race attracted 841 participants from 34 countries at the CamSur Watersports Complex in Pili, Camarines Sur. Pete Jacobs of Australia won the race with a time of 3 hours, 58 minutes and 41 seconds. Second was last year's champion and K-Swiss endorser Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand who clocked 4:05:54. The race consisted of 1.2 miles of swimming, 58.6 miles of biking and 13.2 miles of running. In the distaff side, Magali Tisseyre finished with a time of 4:27:01 besting her competitors that included triathlon legend and Sydney Olympics silver medalist Michellie Jones of the United States who placed second with 4:29:23. Among the sponsors of the event was K-Swiss, a line of sports shoes distributed in the Philippines by Planet Sports, Inc. "K-Swiss and Planet Sports are very happy for the successful staging of this year's Ironman Philippines in CamSur," said Anton S. Gonzalez, president of Planet Sports Inc., who was one of the spectators of the event together with K-Swiss Regional Sales Manager Steve Locke. "The sport is getting its momentum and we expect it to grow exponentially here in the Philippines," he added. Aside from Terenzo Bozzone, K-Swiss supports a growing roster of triathletes, Olympians and Ironman champions including Paul Amey, Hillary Biscay, Leanda Cave, Gina Ferguson, Belinda Granger, Heather Gollnick, Chris Lieto, Luke McKenzie, Kim Loeffler and Matt Reed.

Mayo ako mahanap sa Yeheytv para makadalan online. Kaipuhan mi po kaya sa TV kuta. Abs-Cbn or GMA7 perhaps? We can't get the signal of PBN5 man kaya. I need the info so we can also re-broadcast them.

Thanks though Aidz! :)

at a time like this it's wisest not to take your car. best to just wear your sneakers and light clothes and walk, walk, walk. much faster than taking a ride!

our jesuit guest from legaspi just arrived after almost 3.5 hrs of travel na nakatindog pa!

streets are filled with people. can be overwhelming. the 24-hr restaurants at the centro -- Jollibee, two Bigg's stores, 2 McDo's-- were all filled with people after the procession/ Mass this morning. we were at Bigg;s and many customers were growing irate. the staff were simply overwhelmed with orders that it was taking more than 30 mins to serve orders.

the consolation: at least they didnt run out of rock n roll iced tea, cajun chicken, cheeseburger and goto na hinahambog :) ko sa mga bisitang taga manila.

our relatives from Alaminos and Batangas will watch the Fluvial, we advised them to take the jeepney instead. but our relatives from Ilocos and Cavite drove their car, with my father and sister on board to guide them. :D

I saw that Chowking was open as early as 4am im just now sure if it was open 24 hours. buhay na buhay ang centro kasubagong maagahon.

talagang tigbibida ni Father ang Naga's/Bicol's Pride esp when it comes to food. :applause:

the link of yeheytv.com is working po, i posted it this morning pa pero sa page ng Ciudad nin Naga Facebook after I txted my friend na i-up na yung live feed.

ABS-CBN and GMA 7 will not cover the procession. PBN TV 5 is all we got. AND yeheytv.com is voluntarily having it's live feed in the service for all the Bicolanos out there. kaya :applause: for the admin too.

@Chadburry WELCOME po sa CamSur Thread. Feel at home. kaso lalake ka ba? lalake nnman?! hehehe dai nalang baga kaya nadadagdagan ang girls digdi sato. maray nalang nag abot naman si ms. myonee..

Breaking down the 36th season of PBA
By Patricia Bermudez-Hizon – September 18th, 2010

by Patricia Bermudez-Hizon
For Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The PBA, under now the management of Commissioner Chito Salud, is gearing up for the 36th season which takes off on October 3, 2010, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. There will be improved philosophies on officiating that will be implemented, and at the same time, they will adopt changes in the rules that will make the games faster.

The return of the Grand Slam is one of the exciting prospects of the new PBA season. After 2003, under then Commissioner Noli Eala the season had been trimmed down to two conferences, the All-Filipino and the Fiesta Conference, to give way for the National Team’s pursuit for international glory. With the Smart Gilas squad taking the cudgels of representing flag and country, it only made sense to return to the old tournament format.

The Philippine Cup will be the traditional all-Filipino tournament, and will be the longest, spanning from October to possibly 1st week of February. The 10 teams will be divided into 2 groups with each team playing their group mates once and the others twice for a total of 14 games played by the end of the eliminations. Bottom two teams will be eliminated while the playoffs will pit the 1st ranked vs. the 8th, 2nd ranked vs. the 7th, 3rd vs. 6th, and 4th vs. 5th. The four survivors will compete in a best of 7 semis and the champion will be determined via a best of 7 war as well.

After a two week break, the Commissioner’s Cup will be played around the 20th of February till May 15. Each team can parade an import no taller than 6’4”. The short tournament will comprise of a single round elimination, after which the bottom 4 teams will be eliminated. The top 2 teams will go straight to the semis but will only be waiting for a week, unlike the 3 week breaks automatic semi-finalists are sometimes cursed with. The quarterfinals will be a best of 3 affair, pitting the 3rd ranked against the 6th, and the 4th with the 5th ranked. The rest of the way will be a best of 7 in each stage.

There will be enough time to rest before the All Star Games around the week of May 20th. The PBA is thinking up newer ways to keep the fan interaction even better.
Finally there’s the Governor’s Cup. There’s a handicapping system based on the season team standings after the eliminations of the 2nd conference. The bottom two teams’ imports will have a height limit of 6’6”, then 5th to 8th ranked will have a height limit of 6’4”, while the top 4 teams can only get imports no taller than 6’2”.

A single round elimination will be played, where the bottom 4 are dropped and the top 6 will compete in a single round semi-finals format. The season will possibly end by August 19.

“Only the Best Play Here” summarizes the upcoming season and fans cannot wait for the opening day which will not only have the parade of all players and their lovely muses, but will also pit the Baranggay Ginebra Gin Kings against the Meralco Bolts.

Epic event sa Peñafrancia festival'

Last Updated on Saturday, 18 September 2010 20:24

Just got home from Naga after a 6-hour land trip with my friend/brother. Tried contacting the team to say my farewell to the guys kaso hindi ko sila makontak.

First, I would like to express my utmost thanks and appreciation to the Philippine National Railways headed by new GM Jun Ragnario for accommodating the team and providing meals on board the trip.

To the PNR rank-and-file personnel, for the rail stories on board the Power Car at sa CAR-02 habang pa Naga tayo.

Second, to the members of the RIHSPI team: Master A, Airnel, Ayhan, Kenji, Metal_Slug, at sa photographer friend ni Airnel (apologies hindi ko matandaan name mo ), salamat sa lahat ng kulitan, kwentuhan at chikahan while onboard the trip...

Request naman ng shunting video tom sa Naga shed. Hindi kona mavivideo kasi. Ngats kayo sa byahe pabalik.

To Master A, sa wakas natupad na din ang dream nyo to ride a train once again to Calauag. Sayang nga at hindi na tayo nagstopover. Baka tuluyan na kayo naging emo.

Third, to Mr. and Mrs. Happosai for "adopting" me while waiting for the Bicol Trip.

Fourth, to Engineer du4crx, Sir Vic, and the SSC Naga team, it was a pleasure to have finally met you guys (except sa SSC pips ), and for accommodating and assisting the team while in Naga.

I want more pics of the meet

Will Fil-Am teen be Disney’s ‘Next Big Thing’?
LOS ANGELES – A Filipino-American teenager, who released her first album when she was only 11, is appealing to Filipinos all over the world to vote for her as Radio Disney’s “N.B.T.” (“Next Big Thing”). Amber Lily, now 13, is one of five young artists in the online competition.

Amber, whose mother, Maria Elena “Malyn” Baduria, is from Tigaon, Camarines Sur, is currently featured on Disney Channel and Radio Disney (online at RadioDisney.com) until Sept. 28. Two of Amber’s songs (“Next to You” and “2 2 2L8”) are being spotlighted. Vote for Amber at RadioDisney.com or text “NBT” to DISNEY (347639). The winner gets a chance to have his or her single released by Disney Music Group or open for the Disney band, Allstar Weekend, in a show.

In her appeal to Pinoys, the singer-songwriter who has fond memories of her late lolo teaching her “Bahay Kubo,” wrote via e-mail, “Please vote for me to become Radio Disney’s ‘Next Big Thing.’ I’m humbled to carry on the tradition of talented artists from the Philippines. Help me prove to Disney that Filipinos have what it takes to be the ‘Next Big Thing’! Maraming salamat po!”

Her mother’s hometown

Amber was born in LA, but grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. She visited her mother’s hometown in Bicol for the first time last May and had fun meeting her cousins, exploring Tagaytay and Nato Beach, shopping in Manila and riding a padyak. The pop and R&B singer, who’s also passionate about dancing and acting, was named after her grandmother, Lilia.

Amber’s father, Eric, is an American of Norwegian ancestry who met Maria when she moved to the US in 1986. Amber’s lolo, Salvador Baduria Sr., came to the US in 1997 and helped raise her. He inspired her to have a deep appreciation for her Filipino heritage before he passed away early this year.

From the time she impressed the audience during a school program at age 5, Amber has pursued her love for singing and performing. She was only 10 years old when she began working on her self-titled album. She uses the lyrics of her songs to convey positive and empowering messages for kids and tweens, and finds inspiration in Charice Pempengco, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Swift.

DENR Opens the 2011 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools
Interested schools that would like to participate in the 2011 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools may start submitting their school’s documentation of its eco-friendly program, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

According to DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje, the eco-friendly schools program launched last 2009 generated positive responses from the schools and this paved the way for the next wave of the competition in 2011.

“We intended to have the awarding of the search next year instead of this year to allow schools more time to prepare and to enhance their existing eco-friendly programs. We are hoping to encourage more schools to participate and take part in heightening environmental awareness among our youth,” Paje said.

The nationwide contest dubbed, “2011 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools,” is a direct response to Republic Act No. 9512 also known as the Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008. It is also the Philippine initiative in support to the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan (2008-2012).

The contest was also organized to highlight achievement of schools that are committed in implementing various environmental programs. Open to all elementary, high school and tertiary school levels, both public and private, the activity aims to encourage schools and academic institutions to become more actively involved in environmental issues at a practical and local level. It also aims to develop skills and understanding among students, faculty and school administrators to initiate active responses and increase community awareness and involvement on environmental concerns.

Last year, a total of nine schools were declared as national champs for the 2009 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools. These are the following: (Elementary Category) First prize - Peñablanca East Central School, Aggugaddan-Malibabag, Peñablanca, Cagayan; Second prize - North Central Elementary School, Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City, Pangasinan; and Third prize - Badas Elementary School, Badas, Placer, Surigao del Norte.

For the high school category, the winners are: First place - La Castellana National High School, La Castellana, Negros Occidental; Second place - Camarines Sur National High School, Naga City, Camarines Sur; and Third place- Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, Matina, Davao City.

For the college category, the winners are: First place – Palawan State University, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; Second place – Visayas State University, Baybay, Leyte; and Third place – Catanduanes State Colleges , Virac, Catanduanes.

The national search is a joint activity of the DENR through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Smart Communications.

Smart Communications joins the activity as part of its own environment advocacy for schools. “We are happy to partner again with the DENR and other agencies for this nationwide search. This activity will encourage schools to promote environmental consciousness among the youth,” said Ramon Isberto, Smart Public Affairs Head.

Participating schools must submit entries in three (3) hard copies to respective DepEd Division Offices for elementary and high school categories, and to EMB Regional Offices for the higher education category. The minimum requirement for judging will be the hard copies. Entries can likewise be submitted online in JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dots per inch (dpi), a minimum size of 1536 x 2048 pixels, and a maximum file size of 1MB. Entries may be emailed to ecofriendlyschools@gmail.com. The top entry per category for every region will be forwarded to the EMB Central Office for national judging.

For elementary and high school categories, entries should be submitted directly to their respective DepEd Division Offices. On the other hand, for the college category, entries should be submitted to the nearest EMB Regional Office. The deadline for the submission of entries is on April 29, 2011.

School entries should revolve around the theme "Sustainable and Eco-friendly Initiatives.” Participating schools should include a brief description of the Project.

Entries will be rated according to the following: Environment-related Aspects of the School’s Policy (20 pts); Environment-friendly School Operations and Presence of Environmental Programs (30 pts); Environment-related Features of the School Curriculum (30 pts); Presence of Vibrant Eco Organizations in Campus (10 pts); and Presence of Partners and Linkages in Environment Programs/Projects (10 pts). Only one entry per school will be accepted.

For the national level, prizes include, College, High School and Elementary: P50,000 - 1st Prize; P40,000 - 2nd Prize; P30,000 - 3rd Prize and plaques of recognition. For the regional level, a certificate of recognition and a prize of in cheque of P10,000 will be given to regional winners for each category.

All winning entries for each of the three categories, together with selected entries will be displayed during the national awarding ceremonies in November 2011, coinciding with the National Environmental Awareness Month celebration.

300-year-old devotion to Ina celebrated

NAGA CITY: All roads are heading to this place as devotees of the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia commemorate the 300-year devotion to Ina—the longest and strongest devotion so far in the country.
The domestic airports in Legazpi City and Pili, Camarines Sur were jam-packed with passengers. Balikbayans from around the world including tourists, passenger buses and private cars are all heading to Naga to be with Ina’s tercentenary celebration tomorrow.

Maria Nini Ong Ravanilla, regional director of the Department of Tourism in Bicol met with hundreds of tourists and balikbayans who came in through the Legazpi City Domestic Airport.

The seven flights regularly catered by airlines could no longer accommodate the big influx of visitors in Naga City.
Ravanilla said that numerous balikbayans opted to take buses or avail any land transportation utility to catch up with the pinnacle
of Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia grand celebration here.

The strong devotion to Ina was introduced here by Spanish priest Father Miguel Robles de Cobarrubias in 1710.

The 300-year celebration and devotion to Ina is quite unique today as devotees arouand the world will be passing througah for the first time at 18 meters long, 4-m wide and 11-m high commemorative arch dedicated to Our Lady of Peñafrancia which mark the people’s strong religious fervor.

The symbolic gate—the Porta Mariae is where the relic of Ina was placed. It imbues the journey of Marian devotion, which is built on testimonies of miracles and witnessed by native devotees locally known here as the cimarrones.

The Porta Mariae, classified as a triumphal arch—a structural design rarely done in the present time—was built by 28-year-old architect Gian Paolo Priela.

He said that he patterned the design to the ancient times to commemorate the victories and triumphs of kings and emperors and the Porta Mariae is one of the two of its kind built in the country.

According to Priela, the first triumphal arch built in the country was the Arch of the Centuries of the University of Santo Tomas in
Manila where the students, including national hero Jose Rizal, enter when they start studying in that Catholic university, and exit when they graduated.

He said that the Porta Mariae is an icon to commemorate the three centuries of devotion here wherein he drew the inspiration of the design from the facade of the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, replicating its column design.

The triumphal arch is made of reinforced concrete. It is hollow inside and with a height equivalent of a three-storey building.
Devotees can ascend to staircases built on the left and right wings to visit souvenir shops on the second floor, the gallery on the third floor and a viewing deck on top. At the center of the arch is the relic of Ina.

The Porta Mariae is built through the concerted efforts of the Peñafrancia Association of Bikolanos in Metro Manila, the Archdiocese of Caceres and anonymous donors.

The arch ushers devotees and the journey of the devotion to the future when the 300-year-old image of Ina enters the symbolic door on Friday during the Traslacion—when the image is brought to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral from the Peñafrancia Shrine—for the nine-day novena, before the pinnacle and grand fluvial procession on the Naga River tomorrow.http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/component/content/article/42-rokstories/26114-300-year-old-devotion-to-ina-celebrated-

World Bank and Ateneo Launch Youth Leaders for Knowledge and Development (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/277704/world-bank-and-ateneo-launch-youth-leaders-knowledge-and-development)

By HARVEY S. KEH

MANILA, Philippines — One of the biggest challenges for our country in the coming years will be its ability to produce the next generation of leaders who will be able to help propel our nation out of poverty and into lasting development.

Unlike other Asian tiger economies like China and Japan, the Philippines is very blessed to have a very young population wherein majority are aged under 40 years old. In the last elections we have already seen glimpses of the Filipino youth’s impact in our society, and if harnessed and trained properly, these young Filipinos will eventually decide the future of our country.

With these in mind, the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG) and the World Bank’s Knowledge for Development Center recently selected more than 50 Filipino young leaders who will take part in the inaugural Youth Leaders for Knowledge and Development program.

In this program, these young leaders, who are either college students or young professionals, will be given the unique chance to interact with accomplished leaders in our country.

During these so called “kapihan” sessions, the young leaders will get the chance to ask questions, raise issues and share insights with the current decision makers of our country.

Among those that are being lined up for them to interact with are Ramon Magsaysay Awardees such as DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo and Benjamin Abadiano of Assisi Foundation, as well as successful social entrepreneurs such as Fr. Xavier Alpasa, S.J., founder of Rags2Riches. Through these interactions, the organizers of the program hope that these young Filipino leaders will learn how it is to become effective, ethical and empowering leaders for our country.

Developing good leaders

During the launching of the program held last September 9, 2010 at the University of the Philippines’ Bahay ng Alumni, the World Bank’s Matthew Stephens congratulated the participants for being chosen among the hundreds who applied to be part of the program. Stephens cited the importance of developing good leaders in our country as a means towards making our current government institutions more responsive to the needs of the ordinary Filipinos.

He cited the experience of Naga City, wherein then Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo was able to curb corruption and transform Naga into the premiere city of the Bicol region. Stephens said that if many of our local government leaders were like Robredo, then our country would be able to easily become one of the leading countries in Asia.

To give the keynote address to the participants, the organizers invited another Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, former Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca.
Padaca exhorted the participants to go out of their way to help promote good governance in our country. She also shared her experience of going against all odds including that of defeating a 40 year old political dynasty just to be able to be of service to her fellow Isabelinos.

For those who may not know, Padaca was a victim of polio at an early age. She continues to need crutches just to be able to walk. During her six years as governor of the second largest province in the country in terms of land area, she shared that she was able to help increase the income of farmers in the province as well as help lead the fight to protect the Sierra Madre against illegal loggers.

Padaca also explained to the participants that there is an urgent need for them to continue to support and help good leaders in our country especially those who are currently in government. She shared that without the necessary support, these leaders may eventually be swallowed by the corrupt system and we will only be left with government leaders whose only interest is to enlarge their personal bank accounts.

To cap the event, the ASOG’s Dr. Antonio La Viña shared with the participants the importance of developing new ideas and innovative solutions to solving our current social problems. He cited the growing trend towards the use of technology as well as social networking sites in helping promote greater transparency and accountability in our government. Moreover, he emphasized the ASOG’s continued thrust towards developing a new generation of Filipino leaders who will bring about the necessary reforms that are needed in our country.

The first kapihan sessions for the participants will begin this coming October and will be held at the World Bank’s Knowledge for Development Center in Pasig City.

Kids of Inquirer’s news vendors relearn Peñafrancia origins (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/nation/view/20100918-293066/Kids-of-Inquirers-news-vendors-relearn-Peafrancia-origins)

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:42:00 09/18/2010

NAGA CITY, Philippines—As the city commemorates the 300-year devotion to the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Inquirer conducted on Thursday, Sept. 16, a Read-Along session for around 220 children, majority of them kids of news vendors who distribute the Inquirer in the streets each day.

“It was the first time for the children of the news vendors to experience the Read-Along,” said Erwin Reyes, business development officer of the Sales and Marketing department.

He said there were around 140 children of the newsboys who attended, with the rest composed of orphans taken care of by the Missionary of the Poor and Missionary of Charity.

The children, who represented public schools in Naga City and Pili town, were reintroduced to the origins of Bicol’s patroness called Ina.

Huddled at SM City Naga’s event center, they surprised the storytellers with their familiarity with her story.

Viva la Virgen

It was like Sunday school for the kids who chanted from time to time the familiar praise “Viva la Virgen” upon cue from storyteller Vic Nierva, poet, book author, theater artist and college instructor.

Keeping the young crowd focused on the story of Ina, that began in Spain in the 15th century up to its introduction in Ciudad de Nueva Caceres (old Naga City), storytellers Catherine Dominique Lagrimas, 2010 Miss Bicolandia, and Nierva, complemented each other’s act through discussion in English, Tagalog and Bicol of key events in the story.

Lagrimas narrated in English the storybook “The First Peñafrancia in Bicol” written by Fr. Wilmer Tria as Nierva retold it in the native tongue and interacted with his young audience by asking questions from the story.

Throughout the exchange, the children picked up words like “voyadores“ and “cimarrones,” and came to know Fr. Miguel Robles, the Spanish priest who brought the devotion to Ina in the Bicol region.

Voyadores are devotees who make a commitment to participate in the procession of the image of Ina during its transfer from its Naga Basilica home to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral and during the fluvial procession at the Naga River. Cimarrones, on the other hand, refer to the early natives of Naga City.

When Nierva led the children in singing “Resuene Vibrante,” the hymn to Ina, they sang their hearts out even if the song was in Spanish: “Resueño vibrante el himno de amor…Que entona tu pueblo con grata emocion…Patrona del Bicol gran Madre de Dios…Se siempre la Reina de Nuestra Region…Patrona del Bicol gran Madre de Dios…Siempre la Reina de Nuestra Region.”

Young generation

Fr. Tria said the book, which was written in a manner that speaks the ‘language of children,’ aimed at the young generation who will continue the devotion as the Ina journeys to the next century.

“I hope that as early as their age, the spirit of being a voyador will be inculcated in them,” he added.

Fr. Andrew Recepcion, executive director of the committee in charge of the tercentenary celebration, said: “We also want to encourage the Bicolano parents to educate their children on the importance of the devotion.”

Sonia Roco, who represented the Raul S. Roco library in the city, said: “One must know how to read not only words but people and situations.”

She added that reading is like “standing on the shoulder of giants” that allows one to see a wider perspective.

Roco is the widow of the former senator and esteemed Bicolano Raul S. Roco.

Cathechism

English teacher Jene Nabua of the Nazareth Learning Center here, who also attended the activity, said the read-along is a big help, especially for their “Brothers” who teach catechism to the children.

“They will learn more of the Virgin and how to pray to her,” she said.

Beatriz Ebio, mother of newspaper seller Alfredo, proudly enumerated the names of her four grandchildren and the neighborhood kids whom she brought along to the read-along.

“I want to give them the opportunity to know all about the Virgin through story-telling. I hope they would come to love Ina, too,” said Ebio.

Reyes observed how the children actively interacted with the storytellers and had fun during the activity. Juan Escandor Jr., Paul John Barrosa and Shiena Barrameda, Inquirer Southern Luzon

DSWD committed to building transition homes for children in conflict with the law
MANILA, Sept. 20 (PNA) –- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced it will prioritize the construction of transition homes for children in conflict with the law this coming 2011.

The DSWD made this pledge during the recently concluded roundtable discussion on Republic Act 9344, or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, held at the University of the Philippine Law Center.

The forum was held in collaboration with the Philippine-American Educational Foundation.

DSWD Undersecretary Alicia R. Bala said they will push for the construction of transition homes as this will provide the children a safe haven for rehabilitation and reformation.

She also added the establishment of youth homes for in every city and municipality is mandated by Republic Act 9344.

Bala stressed that these homes will serve as 24-hour child-caring institutions managed by local government units and licensed and/or accredited non-government organizations providing short-term residential care for children in conflict with the law who are awaiting court disposition of their cases or transfer to other agencies or jurisdiction.

“For 2010, the construction of the first transition homes will be in Misamis Occidental which has been identified as priority,” Bala stressed.

The DSWD has allocated funds this year for the upgrading of existing facilities like Center for Restorative Activities, Development and Learning Experience, and National Bilibid Prison.

Bala said transition homes shall be established in seven cities, two municipalities and eight provinces in 2011.

The cities are Naga, Cauayan, Urdaneta, Surigao, Lucena, Puerto Princesa, General Santos; and municipalities of Baybay and Bangued; while the provinces are Leyte, Camarines Sur, Isabela, Pangasinan, Bukidnon, Quezon, Palawan and Abra.

“Aside from logistical support for the construction of the transition homes, the JJWC shall also ensure that the facilities comply with international and national standards,” she emphasized.

Apart from the construction of the transition homes, Bala explained that implementation of comprehensive intervention and diversion programs at the local government level in partnership with non-government organization will also be undertaken by the agency.

It has selected eight provinces, namely: Davao, Misamis Oriental, Camarines Sur, Abra, Surigao del Sur, Quezon, Palawan and Benguet, and eight cities, such as Cebu City, as well as Manila, Quezon, Valenzuela, Caloocan, Mandaluyong, Malabon and Taguig in the National Capital Region, which will serve a pilot areas based on high incidence of CICL and commitment of support from concerned local government units.

Other priorities of the DSWD are: documentation of positive results of the law and best practices in handling and managing children in conflict with the law; installation of data-base and knowledge center that would capture the socio-economic profile of the children, and causes of juvenile offending; strengthen institutional partnership with organizations and agencies directly or indirectly involved with the affected children; conduct of information campaign; provision of trainings to members of the barangay council for the protection of children and family court judges; and undertake a follow-up study on discernment of Filipino children aged seven to 17, and the study on profile of sexual offenders at the New Bilibid Prison.

“We acknowledge that there are challenges and gaps that should be addressed immediately. As the inter-agency council mandated to guarantee and oversee its full implementation, we will mobilize, build stronger and lasting alliances and partnerships with organizations especially with local government units, not only for this law to work but most importantly, for us to fulfill our commitment to children,” Bala emphasized.

Meanwhile, from 2006-2009, some 7,426 children in conflict with the law have been released from jails.http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=1&rid=301592

great photos. at least 7 bishops were aboard the pagoda, blessing the pilgrims along the river. it was good to see them, in particular, the international bishops who have come to represent their dioceses where bikolano communities live and/or bikolano missionaries work.

was with Archbishop Reece of Jamaica on the same flight wnpmnl yesterday. his first time in naga and he was impressed by the faith of the people, and their affection for INA and her Son.

and guess what he was bringing with him back to jamaica, aside from good memories- BIKOL EXPRESS haha :banana::banana: the good bishop got his first taste of our fiery dish days after the Traslacion and was, needless to say, hooked! jamaicans, after all (think jamaican patties, pinatubo flavor!), are also into hot and spicy stuff.

a congregation of sisters, the Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, a homegrown order of nuns founded in Naga about 15 yrs ago, works in his archdiocese. He is impressed by the wonderful, dedicated work of the sisters, some of whom are licensed health professionals.

we were at the Cathedral to see Ina's procession from there to Tabuco bridge. the confetti shower (courtesy of the helicopter) was another sight to behold. the wind even came and blew the confetti all over the place. it was picture-perfect.

the boy on his father's shoulders brings back sentimental memories of many fiestas. my own father would carry me on his shoulders and tell me: Si Ina, noy, si Ina! as Our Lady passed by.

and this has always been one familiar, moving sight every fiesta. :)

Naga celebrates 300 years of devotion to ‘Ina’

By Josephine Darang
Philippine Daily Inquirer
DateFirst Posted 22:05:00 09/19/2010

BOTH PILGRIMS and local devotees of Our Lady of Peñafrancia filled up the grounds of the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral on Sept. l0 for the Pontifical Mass marking the Tercentenary of the devotion to “Ina,” patroness of Bicolandia. Almost 400 priests sat facing the altar covered by a dome with stained-glass religious paintings by Pancho Piano. Cardinal Rosales officiated the concelebrated Mass with Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon, Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, SVD, and Daet Bishop Gilbert Garcera.

When the 300-year-old image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia on an anda was carried by priests in black soutannas, the grand choir burst into song. The people rose and sang with them “Himno a la Virgen de Peñafrancia,” while they waved their handkerchiefs. For the first time, the image passed through the newly built Porto Mariae, a three-story structure built by the Peñafrancia Devotees of Metro Manila Foundation, Inc., headed by retired general Salvador Mison.

When she passed by, photographer Anuar Medina and fashion designer Ali Rich Garcia reached out to touch the base of “Ina’s” statue and felt goose pimples.

When she was near me, I whispered prayers while crying.

Her sons and daughters

In his homily, Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi, OP, said, “For 300 years, the Bicolanos have kept themselves within the embrace of “Ina.” To be a Bicolano is to be her son or daughter. Devotion to her strengthens our faith.”

Little stories of faith

Resy Alvarez, a medical technologist of the Bicol Medical Center, has been going to her fiestas every year with his mother since he was a little boy. Now, as a young man, his love for “Ina” has become stronger believing that she will always help him.

Nene Rodriguez-Sandico told me that her parents moved to Naga from Lucena in l954, so as a young girl she already knew about “Ina.” Her father, lawyer Delfin Rodriguez and mother Ester became involved in the devotion. Nene remembers that in the ’80s, a priest hit a child on the street. The child died and the priest went to then Msgr. Sofronio Balce for help. Msgr. Balce gave him the manto of “Ina”. The priest put the manto on the dead child and she came back to life.

Lilibeth Guysayko and her classmates (HS Class ’70 of Colegio de Sta. Isabel) have great devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia. Gathering at the flea market in the Ursua compound on Magsaysay Aveñue (across Bob Marlin resto) on the Saturday I was there, they recalled their experiences. They were Miriem Abogado-Ursua, Yoly Boñag-Gabrillo, Emma Legaspi, Lourdes Oliva and Aba Sanchez.

Porto Mariae

The Porto Mariae that now serves as gateway to the Naga cathedral is a great structure built by devotees of “Ina.” Money was raised for the construction by the board members of the Peñafrancia Devotees of Metro Manila Foundation. The officers are retired general Salvador Mison, chairman; PC Supt. Tomas Rentoy III, president; Antonio Hing, vice president; Engr. Wenfredo Firme, corporate secretary; Jose Villamor Mendoza, treasurer; Atty. Manuel diaz Jr., corporate counsel; Antonio Aguilar Medina, Ronald Rodriguez, Henry Trillanes and Sigredo Rivera, members.

Porto Mariae was blessed on Sept. 9 by Archbishop Legaspi. On the third floor are the paintings of Pancho Piano and sculptures of Jun Vicaldo.

‘Ina’ in Metro Manila

A fluvial procession from Guadalupe Bridge to Jones Bridge on Sept. l2 ended at the Manila Cathedral where Bishop Nestor Cariño, priests and a thousand devotees welcomed her.

Organized by the Peñafrancia Devotees of Metro Manila Association headed by Dr. Charito Felipe, the celebration took place one week before the actual fiesta in Naga on Sept. l8.

Concelebrating the Mass were Msgr. Joselito Asis, Msgr. Jun Zurbano, Fr. Alan Dialogo, Fr. Ramil Tapang, SSP, and Fr. Pete Barrisoro, SSP. In his homily, Fr. Dialogo said that the devotion to “Ina” is “balaog inako, balaog itao.” This means that devotion to her is a gift that should be shared with everyone. Apparently, this is happening because of the thousands of devotees among non-Bicolanos who are going to Naga for the fiesta.

Fr. Dialogo also revealed that “Ina” interceded for the miraculous healing by God of Archbishop Legaspi who was suffering from lung cancer.

A week before the start of the festivities, doctors confirmed that the cancer was gone.

Pancho Piano's Naga
(The Philippine Star) Updated September 19, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

Pancho is photographed beside the image of Our Lady of Penafrancia at the Museo Concillar Seminario at the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary. This museum established sometime in 1194 showcases Bicol ancient relics and artifacts like burial jars, China ware, rare stones, and ritual objects. The museum also showcases the local church history through Roman Catholic vestiges and sacred objects.

MANILA, Philippines - The Most Reverend Leonardo Z. Legaspi, Archbishop of Caceres has called him the Painter of Ina because of the many works he has done in honor of Our Lady of Penafrancia, the Patroness of the Bicol Region.

Known internationally as a stained glass artist and mural painter, Pancho Piano has hundreds of works focusing on Bicolano traditions, especially the devotion to Our Lady of Penafrancia. In his hometown in Naga, these include the stained glass ceilings of the Penafrancia Basilica Jubilee Pavilion, as well as stained glass windows for the Adoration Chapel of the Basilica Minore, the outdoor chapel of the Penafrancia Shrine, stained glass installations at the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Archbishop’s Palace.

His religious paintings and stained glass work can also be seen in churches around the Philippines like the St. Gregory Cathedral in Legaspi City, the Virac Cathedral in Catanduanes, the Masbate Cathedral, the Bishop’s Residence in Pasig City, and the Shrine of Our Lady of Annunciation in Quezon City. He also has mural paintings depicting the history, culture, and mythology of Bicol, which can be found in government buildings in the region.

Pancho has gone a long way from the struggling young artist, who after finishing his Economics Degree at the University of Nueva Caceres and working on commercial paintings and illustrations for local publications, was recommended by the late National Artist Jose Joya as his scholar at the University of the Philippines College of Fine arts in Quezon City. This invaluable training honed and refined his skills, leading him to top the list of UP based artists to train in German leather art making.

Although he has exhibited his works in cities in Europe and the United States like Berlin, Vienna, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chicago; as well as undertaking mural projects in Japan, Saipan, and Palau, Pancho remains devoted to Our Lady and Bicol.

As we celebrate the Tercentenary of Our Lady of Penafrancia, he takes us on an extraordinary tour around his hometown. This is his Naga, his SM.

Winner, 'My City, My SM' : Dagos po kamo sa Maogmang Lugar

By Ria Rosaura-Romero (The Philippine Star) Updated September 19, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

MANILA, Philippines - As I was reading the different articles about the different cities, I was inspired to create my own observation about our place. It was actually Mel (my husband) hometown but still I consider it as my second home, living for more than eight (8) years now, I have learned many things here although it was not as glamorous and lively as Malate, the place where I grew up but people here are known for their hospitality and warmth. At first, I was hesitant to go because I don’t know the life I will be taking nor the people I would be dealing with but it was not difficult to adjust here because the people are very friendly and accommodating. That is one of the reasons that I never felt homesick.

Naga City has a vibrant culture and great devotion which can be seen on the different festivities and numerous numbers of churches and every month of September, Naga City along with the whole Bicol Region celebrates the country’s most popular and biggest Marian devotion, the feast of Peñafrancia, much better known as “Ina” (mother and patroness of Bicol) Different devotees from local and international pays a visit to show their love and devotion to Ina of Peñafrancia who many believes works miraculously. As early as July, the image of Ina visits different offices, malls, barangay and schools, this is called “Pagsungko ni Ina” or visitation of our Holy Mother.

Naga City leaves her mark as one of the most awarded LGU in the Philippines, having able to win numerous awards in terms of good governance and an impressive leadership of our former mayor Jessie Robredo, now our DILG Secretary. Every Nagueñoes takes pride of his accomplishment and his effort to make the City of Naga truly a “Maogmang Lugar,” happy place.

Our place is very accessible via air and land and many prime hotels are available for guests to enjoy their stay. Naga City is a place with many things to offer and there are many places you can visit. If you feel like going to historical sites, you can visit the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary which was declared by the National Institute as a National Historical Landmark. If you are into nature and love adventure just like we do, you can trek to the mountain slopes of Mt. Isarog and you could experience the warmth of nature with the beautiful Malabsay Falls. You can also do “bisita iglesia,” visit the lovely churches like the home of “Ina” Peñafrancia Basilica Minore, San Francisco Church with it’s beautiful altar and be mesmerized and awed with the great architecture of the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral.

If eating is your hobby as mine, don’t forget to visit the numerous local dining places who offer great, sumptuous local foods with very affordable price. Naga City is also well known for it’s pinangat, Pili Nuts, laing but there is also another delicacy still unknown to many people and to tourists as well and we call it “Kinalas”, it was a noodle with a sauce that comes from a pig or cow’s head , boiled and was put into the noodles. It is also best served with “baduya” (fried banana). And of course, your stay could not be complete if you would not able to taste the famous fried [sic- toasted, actually] siopao.

Naga City is a budding city that is why it’s a perfect choice and location for the country’s well loved mall, SM supermall. SM City has just marked it’s first year last May 1, 2010 but it was still very fresh in my memory when they made their opening last year. Even with thunderstorm and heavy rains and floods, the Nagueñoes could not be stop even by calamity, still hundred of people went to SM Naga to witness it’s first day, to feel the best shopping, dining, and entertainment experience in one roof.

Now, our week was not complete without going to SM, our little darling Peachy always looks forward on Saturday and Sunday because it is her time to go to the mall. The happiness that she felt could never be bought nor can be quantify by anything.

I know that I would be spending many years here in Naga City and SM Naga City would indeed be a big part of my family’s life, creating and weaving beautiful memories that are worth remembering.

Through these interactions, the organizers of the program hope that these young Filipino leaders will learn how it is to become effective, ethical and empowering leaders for our country..

this is an excellent initiative. Fr Xavier Alpasa,SJ, was assigned at the ateneo de naga for a couple of years. before joining the jesuits he was with San Miguel then with PCIBank Treasury. He was one of the movers behind the Management Honors program at AdNU. Mr Benjamin Abadiano is a former Jesuit. we both entered in the same year and he left about 4 years later. he organized an NGO for the Mangyans of Mindoro even before entering the jesuit novitiate.

How is Naga after the fiesta? I can imagine gangs of garbage collectors were already up shortly after midnight busy collecting tons after tons of garbage round Naga especially in the CBD. They are the unsung heroes after fiestas that work hard to prevent the city from stinking.

hindi naman big deal ang paglilinis sa Naga after occasion. proven and tested na yan. kang panahon na si Sec Robredo pa ang mayor, may mga time na minsan sya pa mismo ang tumutulong sa paglilinis. that is the culture and mentality of Naguenos.

Sowing passion, reaping success (http://www.bworldonline.com/main/content.php?id=18014)

Lyndon C. Tan
President
Basic Necessity, Inc.

Some people are born with green thumbs, with a natural affinity for growing and nurturing plants. Combine this talent with a savvy business outlook and you might get someone like Lyndon C. Tan.

Growing up in a world where conversations revolved around yields, pricing and weather, it was only natural for Mr. Tan to join his family’s rice milling business after graduating from the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City. He handled the marketing side of the business but never forgot the appeal of farming.

With his innate understanding of the business, Mr. Tan decided that he wanted to compete with the popular agribusiness brands. To better equip himself for this undertaking, he pursued a Masters in Business Administration from the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) before setting up his own company.

With his parents’ blessing -- their only request was for him not to compete with the family business -- but with very limited capital, Mr. Tan put up Basic Necessity, Inc. in 1997. He grew and traded vegetables in Silang, Cavite, where the weather was favorable to his crops. He mostly bought vegetables from Nueva Ecija or Baguio farmers, then consolidated and sold them in the Tagaytay area.

Three years later, Mr. Tan saw a way to achieve his goal by developing the local lettuce industry. In 2000, the Philippines would import about 400,000 kilos of lettuce from Australia. Locally grown lettuce was practically negligible in the industry because of unreliable supply.

"Hotels and high-end restaurants paid P180-200 per kilo of lettuce simply because of its scarcity," he says. "I decided to see if my backyard-grown produce could reduce the volume of importations."

Aware that the country’s tropical climate and general soil type were not conducive to growing lettuce, Mr. Tan researched and drafted a special program that would allow locally grown lettuce to compete with imports. He convinced Senator Edgardo Angara that Basic Necessity was serious about being a reliable supplier. "At that time, local players like us didn’t have huge resources of our own," he says, "so we asked the government for help."

With a P38 million loan from the Department of Agriculture, he converted eight hectares of his farm into a commercial hydroponic facility and installed a computerized system to automatically create optimal growing conditions for lettuce. He used a mixture of coconut peat and rice husks, which retained water very well, as a soil alternative.

"People will always tell you that husks take too long to dry, but that seeming disadvantage was perfect for my needs. I save water, time and effort; it makes my farm environmentally sustainable. Moreover, my vegetables are free from soilborne diseases."

Mr. Tan began producing 1,500 kilos of top-grade lettuce every day. He was so successful that within his first year of cultivating different varieties of lettuce, Basic Necessity helped reduce importation by 50%. Because lettuce was now more readily available, prices dipped to P110/kilo, which delighted hotel and restaurant buyers. By the second year, Mr. Tan was not only able to significantly lessen imports but he worked to eliminate them entirely.

His groundbreaking success then would be the first of many. "After initially catering to the hotels, we started to get more clients in fine dining, such as Italianni’s and Cibo, who were encouraged to offer salads in their menus because lettuce was now much more affordable," Mr. Tan says. Basic Necessity developed a ’restaurant group’ to accommodate its growing number of clients. Mr. Tan also started teaching the secret of growing lettuce to small-scale farmers who worked in his back-up farms in Baguio.

With lettuce prices further dropping to P90 per kilo, Mr. Tan posited that salads could now be accessible to more consumers. When his ’restaurant group’ mushroomed, he decided to open up his market by developing salads for fastfood chains and convenience stores. Initially, this was a challenge as Filipinos are not traditional salad eaters, Mr. Tan notes.

"Surprisingly, the affordable salad items became bestsellers, maybe because people are more health-conscious now."

In true visionary fashion, Mr. Tan responded by expanding his product categories to include pre-packed salads for supermarkets, making them readily available to the public.

"These products are more expensive in terms of equipment investment but I felt that more and more consumers wanted to eat healthy meals but didn’t have the time to prepare them. So, the ready-to-eat salad was born."

With the success of its lettuce production and salad bags, Basic Necessity diversified into a number of pioneering products under the SaladTime brand. It introduced incubator-grown bean sprouts (togue), fresh peeled garlic, cherry tomatoes and pre-packed Filipino meals such as pinakbet, sinigang and chop suey. To this day, Basic Necessity continues to supply vegetables to upscale hotels and restaurants, the wholesale mecca of Divisoria and even markets as far south as Mindanao.

At present, Basic Necessity aims to further reinvent the vegetable production industry by moving towards specialty customers such as culinary schools and health clubs. Basic Necessity has four greenhouses which produce around 10,000 packs of culinary herbs. Having already explored the opportunities for special diets (e.g., South Beach, Atkins) and special scents for spas (e.g., lavender, rosemary), Mr. Tan is confident that his company can also supply customers with very specific vegetable needs, like fresh wheatgrass for example. He also plans to develop products such as enoki mushrooms, portobello sprouts and baby roquettes, which are not yet locally available.

Mr. Tan is proud of Basic Necessity’s seed-to-shelf coverage; that is, it grows, processes, sells and delivers its own products. Modern equipment such as vacuum coolers, automated vegetable washers and computerized packing machines ensure the freshness of its high-quality produce. Basic Necessity is the first agriculture-based company to receive the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Manufacturing Products (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certifications for its food safety processes.

The passion Mr. Tan has sown in his farm certainly paid off. In 2002, Mr. Tan received the Presidential Gawad Saka Farmer of the Year award for High-Value Commercial Crops (HVCC). He received The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Award for Agricultural and Food Technology in 2003 and the Honor Prestige Award from AIM in 2004.

In an industry where the weather can affect harvest volumes and prices, Mr. Tan remains undaunted. Growing up in Naga City has made him accept typhoons as a way of life, and he simply does his best to bounce back from each calamity.

"A lot of people don’t understand how it is to grow up in the Bicol region. There, we do not see typhoons as unusual problems; they’re regular occurrences. If there’s a typhoon today, we just clean up afterwards and prepare for the next one.

"Typhoon Milenyo was a devastating wipeout -- my market share dropped from 90% to an all-time low of 60% -- but we had to take it in stride. We just woke up at three the next morning, as usual, and started rebuilding the farm."

For Lyndon Tan, being successful is about facing challenges and keeping customers happy; it is having the strength and fortitude to weather any business storm.

Gov’t considers revival of train line to Bicol (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20100919-293224/Govt-considers-revival-of-train-line-to-Bicol)

By Paolo Montecillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:19:00 09/19/2010

MANILA, Philippines—The government is considering the revival of the train line from Metro Manila all the way to Bicol by next year—a project seen as instrumental to the growth of the Southern Luzon economy.

Newly appointed Philippine National Railways (PNR) head Jun Ragragrio said in an interview that the rehabilitation of the train line to Naga City, which is estimated to cost P500 million, would be one of his main objectives.

“By next year, we hope to have at least two trains a day making the trip from Manila to Bicol,” he told the Inquirer.

“I want to finish the reopening of the South Line up to Naga City, or hopefully, even as far as Legaspi,” he said.

At the moment, the PNR manages a passenger train line from Tutuban in Manila to Alabang in Muntinlupa. The PNR also runs a train line from Alabang to Biñan, Laguna.

Only two million passengers use both train lines a year. This pales in comparison to the overhead train systems in Metro Manila—the two Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) along Edsa. The three commuter train lines carry an average 1.2 million passengers a day.

The PNR used to operate a 479-kilometer line from La Union to Bicol, but decades of neglect and problems with informal settlers near the railroad tracks led to the deterioration of services.

The train service to Bicol was terminated in 2006.

Transportation Undersecretary Glicerio Sicat said the extension toward Southern Luzon would complement the PNR’s NorthRail project, which will rehabilitate the train line going up to La Union.

The first phase, which will stretch 42 kilometers from Caloocan to Malolos City, Bulacan, is under construction.

Sicat said the rehabilitation was about 22 percent done.

“The target is to be able to ship cargo and passengers using the trains,” Sicat said, noting that this would reduce congestion on the roads and make moving cargo cheaper and more efficient.

Lets hope a Cebu city-Naga,Camsur tour package will soon be available to local/foreign
tourists because of this new direct flight offered by Airphil express.
it would be easier now to hop from Cebu to Naga, Camsur or v.v. :okay:

this is good news! hope tour packages will be made available soon. thanks for the update, blueleo.

Flights according the AirphilExpress will start on the last week of October with four times a week (M-W- F- Sun) schedule.

Do we see Cebu Pacific following suit?

it's finally back after a looong wait. the 2P flight sked says effective Oct 21 (th) but flight actually begins friday noon.

good news yang mga introduction ng new domestic routes! Mas madaming pwedeng bisitahin kung nagpaplano ka ng bakasyon mo, especially if you are an OFW!! Nice. :D

welcome to the thread, chrismartin! 2P/ airphilexp is getting more aggressive with the introd of more flights and routes.

AFAIK Cebu Pacific offered a Cebu-Naga flight 2 or 3 years ago but failed to sustain the surge of tourism from Visayas going to and fro Bicol.

marhay na bangui!
tapos lang mag tour, were here at Geewan, treat Myonee.

i remember Asian Spirit had Naga-Cebu flights in the early 2000s. hope the concerned agencies will more aggressively promote these flights this time.

my fiesta guests enjoyed their food trip last weekend. on their own they went around centro and magsaysay and explored the interesting eats in the area. they went to red platter 3x enjoying the cakes, shakes and coffee. they had toasted siopao at naga garden and halohalo at iceblinker, sinigang, karekare, bolabola, pancit, kinunot, natong and bikol exp at graceland.

ang namiss lang ninda- kinalas! a reason for them to come back :-)

SSC CamSur pips! saro lang ibig sabihon kani, mabisita kita sa Cebu!!!

perfect timing for the CEBWNP flight. February's Singles for Christ int'l convention in Camsur/ CWC expects 8-10k participants, including big numbers from vismin. April's Filipino-Chinese Catholic YOuth (FCCY) national assembly in CWC includes a good number, too, from vis-min.

Sinulog and Penafrancia, lechon and natong (laing) will just be a little less than an hour away. one can easily order lechon from cebu and pick it up at WNP airport/ pili.

and you should try ZUBUCHON, really good lechon by Marketmanila +http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/zubuchon;
available at mactan airport and at banilad town center, packed by kilo (around P450 garo)

for those interested in buying products made by budding local entrepreneurs/ college scholars:

USI Joins Peñafrancia Trade Fair

In support of the tercentenary celebration of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, INA, our University joined the 1st Gainza Trade Fair from September 9 to 20, 2010 at the SM City-Naga grounds.

Products of MAC (Marillac Alternative College) or Night College Entrepreneurship Program dominated the fares at the USI booth. Its mini companies which innovated their very own products showcased their wares at the booth. Fast-selling were frozen goods like the Tilapia Tocino, Embutido, Malunggay Puto (flavors: ham n cheese, fruit salad and chocolate). Many other products also became fast favorites: the well-designed bamboo trays, pili falkes, pili macaroons, banana heart veggie burger patties, chao fan lumpia, tarts (flavors: carrot, calabasa, papaya, chayote). The USI booth also carried indigenous-material lampshades, colorful decorative bottles made by Marillac Grantee students, bottled tilapia sardines from CES, beaded purses and key chains, bags fashioned out of newspapers and magazines, pouches and cloth bags from St. Louise-Pili, embroidered utility cloth totes from Mother Seton Hospital. The USI Delights goodies were not to be outdone, so there were also fruit cakes, banana cakes, special USI hopia, cheesy chakoy.

For interested parties, dial trunkline (05)473-8417 loc 115 (ask for Mrs. Fortaleza) for USI Delights; same trunkline loc 128 for bottled sardines; same trunkline loc. 130 or 09194960461 for various MAC products; same trunkline loc 204 for beaded products; 09065367634 for bags made of newspapers and magazines.

^^ the whole strip was crowded during the fiesta days, esp during the Sakay/ fluvial processsion. the area closest to basilica road was closed to traffic so those coming from concepcion passing through magsaysay had to walk. we had this walk as we came from CWC last sunday to take lunch at Wok- all in the noonday sun.

but the walk in the scorching heat was worth it as Wok served us superb lunch. nasiraman si mga bisita mi. we just missed spinach soup- naubusan na sinda. we had fish lip soup as a starter instead. then finished yang chow, cindy's chicken, noodles, sweet and sour fish fillet, spicy squid and salt and pepper pork ribs in about 30. nagkagurutom kararalakaw!:cheers::cheers:

Ateneo de Naga University's new president will be officially known this week.

Fr Joel Tabora,SJ, the current president, finishes his term in March 2011. The new president begins his term during the summer.

The new president will still be a Jesuit priest. A strong contender is someone who has a PhD in the social sciences from the University of London.

more updates soon. an SSC exclusive :-) sato ngona before other countries know about this hehehe... :)

hindi naman big deal ang paglilinis sa Naga after occasion. proven and tested na yan. kang panahon na si Sec Robredo pa ang mayor, may mga time na minsan sya pa mismo ang tumutulong sa paglilinis. that is the culture and mentality of Naguenos.
I can still remember... I think it was after Typhoon Monang and we went out to survey the damage... we were at the Magsaysay-Concepcion Intersection when we saw a dump truck pass us by... clinging onto the side of the dump truck was then Mayor Robredo wearing shorts and rubber boots... he's got mud all over him... he was with them, he was one of them... that's one of the images of Robredo that's forever etched in my mind... and that's why when after a typhoon hit Naga when it was Roco's term, Mayor Cho Roco was criticized when he was only seen in the plaza monitoring the clearing and cleaning up of the city and not getting his hands dirty...

I love the aerial shots! I wish someone would take a photo of Naga farther above, a shot that would capture the whole city, like those of Legazpi. Ganda! Kainggit yung mga nag-dinner dyan!
kung meron man, masyadong maliit na... kasi by the time na ang eroplano ay nasa downtown Naga na, masyado na syang maliit... and, pansin ko, walang gaanong kumukuha ng aerial shots kapag nasa plane... :(

ewan ko lang sa chopper...

Is he from AdNU as well? There are rumors within the school that a certain Jesuit priest from the Office of Students Affairs might replace Father Tabs.

Come to think of it, of all big known cathedrals in the country (apart from the Manila Cathedral, of course) the Naga Cathedral has the most beautiful and expansive church patios I've seen. Di ba?:D

@ Rhyz...the mall to occupy part of the PNR station is still under bidding process. Maliit lang aman daw ung mall..i guess just to accommodate ung mga immediate needs ng mga pasahero (food stalls, recreation, especially CR's) or hintayan ng mga nag aabang ng pasahero.

nweiz, speaking of train, here's an interesting find about our new PNR coaches.

MRT na MRT talaga, even the signage inside :)

Ahh!
