These photos depict the current situation of our mountains in CamSur, if not the rest of the Philippines! The big trees are cut so that farmers can use it for agricultural purposes. But after a few crop seasons, they're abandoned because the land is no longer fertile. At this point the pesky cogon grass moves in. It is not too late to mitigate this situation...lets plant more trees and preserve whatever is left of our forests!

AdNU-CLG Conducts Training on Local Legislation

The Ateneo de Naga University-Center for Local Governance, in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region V, conducted a 2-run Training on Local Legislation for the Sangguniang Bayan Members of Camarines Sur last October 14-15 and October 21-22, 2010 at the CLG Training Room.

The training aimed to: (1) enhance the skills and capabilities of Sangguniang Bayan/ Panlungsod (SP/P) members to enact Ordinances/Resolutions for the benefit of their respective City/ Municipality and the welfare of their constituents; (2) expose the SB/P to the legal processes and requirements in enacting Ordinances/Resolutions in their respective City/ Municipality; (3) minimize if not to totally eliminate the enactment, approval and implementation of a defective or invalid Ordinances/Resolutions.

The training was conducted Atty. Imee M. Abardo-Estrada, Assistant City Legal Officer of Naga City.

NAGA CITY --- The 22-member provincial early childhood care and development committee of the provincial government of Bukidnon which is chaired by Gov. Alex Calingasan will be arriving in this city on Nov. 9 “to observe and replicate strategies and techniques in the effective implementation of the city’s early childhood care and development program.”

Also on the same day, students, parents and teachers of the Masbate Ikthus Christian School will also be around for their annual educational tour.

MICS School Director Pastor Moises V. Alcala said the activity is aimed at exposing the children into the physical field of learning and also to afford the parents a continuing education, especially those who were not able to experience what their children are about to experience. The places they hope to visit here include the Bicol Science Centrum, the Roco Library, the Peñafrancia Basilica, Coca Cola Plant, SM City Naga, LCC Mall, and the Camsur Watersports Complex in Pili, Camarines Sur.

The Office of the City Mayor, through the City External Relations Office, is making preparations for the coming study visits.

PILI, Camarines Sur – Another international event is slated at the Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC) of the Camarines Sur Capitol Complex here that will once again feature the elite professionals and amateur wakeboarders of the country and Asia.

The Asian Wakefest 2010 slated November 19-20 is part of a series of extreme sports centered at the CWC comprising a comprehensive sports tourism blueprint launched by Gov. LRay Villafuerte projected to promote Camarines Sur as an international center of extreme sports.

The competion which offers a total prize purse of over P200,000 is open to all Asian riders to be conducted in the following categories: Groms (13 years and below), Girls (13 years and below) Junior Men (ages 14-18), Mens I (ages 19-25) Mens II (ages 26-30), Amateur Women (no age limit), Open Women (no age limit), Open Women Wakeskate (no age limit) (Pro Men Wakeskate ( no age limit), and Pro Men (no age limit).

The contest will feature master wakeboard rider Brandon Thomas of Orlando Florida who ranked third both in the 2009 WWA World Championships and the WWA National Championships.

Registration and membership may be sent by e-mail at asianwakepark@gmail.com but entry fee of US$80 per division must be paid on-site.

The CWC with its two man-made lakes furnished with world class wake park facilities and on-site accommodations is fast becoming a sought after venue for various types of water based sports and has significantly boosted CamSur’s reputation as the most visited destination in the nations.

These photos depict the current situation of our mountains in CamSur, if not the rest of the Philippines! The big trees are cut so that farmers can use it for agricultural purposes. But after a few crop seasons, they're abandoned because the land is no longer fertile. At this point the pesky cogon grass moves in. It is not too late to mitigate this situation...lets plant more trees and preserve whatever is left of our forests!

That's a sad but true situation here in the Philippines. These farmers even resort to the so-called "kaingin" that destroys not only those annoying weeds but also small and big trees.

AdNU-CLG Conducts Training on Local Legislation

The Ateneo de Naga University-Center for Local Governance, in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region V, conducted a 2-run Training on Local Legislation for the Sangguniang Bayan Members of Camarines Sur last October 14-15 and October 21-22, 2010 at the CLG Training Room.

The training aimed to: (1) enhance the skills and capabilities of Sangguniang Bayan/ Panlungsod (SP/P) members to enact Ordinances/Resolutions for the benefit of their respective City/ Municipality and the welfare of their constituents; (2) expose the SB/P to the legal processes and requirements in enacting Ordinances/Resolutions in their respective City/ Municipality; (3) minimize if not to totally eliminate the enactment, approval and implementation of a defective or invalid Ordinances/Resolutions.

The training was conducted Atty. Imee M. Abardo-Estrada, Assistant City Legal Officer of Naga City.

I really like this new public market in Iriga :banana::banana::banana: It is a nice initiative for the mayor to come up with a neat design for a market that deviates from the antiquated designs of most of Bicol's public market. The involvement of the private sector i.e. LCC, fastfood chains definitely helps in assuring the proper maintenance of the place as we really cannot trust the government to come up with a budget just for its upkeep.

yes! I totally agree with you! That's why privatization is sometimes better. Although, I think it's still a public market owned by the LGU of Iriga City... At least that part I know is where those big tenants are leasing...

Support for Bicol's 'Pili' Industry Sought

MANILA, Philippines – A study conducted by a team of biotechnologists Wednesday urged the Aquino government to support the pili industry based in Bicol and improve the tree as a source of resin but also of oil and other micronutrients.

The 56-page study said that pili growers have been at the mercy of middlemen who purchase the nuts before they are ready for harvest and hold on to the product from nine to 12 months to maximize their profits.

One industry player said the farmers are compelled to sell their produce immediately to gain liquidity while the traders dry the nuts, store them and sell them when the market supply is low.

This is the reason, the study showed, that middlemen have a high 75 percent return on investment (ROI) while processors net between 20 percent and 30 percent.

In this equation, the farmers get the low end of the bargain even as some of them sell the pili trees to gain higher income. Pili trees are a source of premium wood for making furniture.

"A real incentive the government could offer is a low-interest financial subsidy program designed to help the average farmer weather lean months without compelling them to commit an entire harvest in exchange for immediate access to cash. This subsidy program (a credit system) would allow farmers to directly control production and distribution as well as maximize their financial benefit by giving them direct access to local and international buyers. This subsidy system would also enhance a competitive environment that is conducive to economic growth as it will relatively increase the velocity of cash at every layer of the economic value chain," the study suggested.

The team that undertook the study was surprised to find out the low buying price of pili (scientific name, Canarium ovatum, while thee other variety is C. luzonicum) even as the seasonal tree had been known as the source of Manila elemi, a resin used for sealing traditional boats, and demand for its essential oil in Europe, the United States and Japan had been rising since the 1950s.

"Despite the recorded growth in the production of Pili from 1990 through 2008 the industry, as a whole remains risk-averse, conflict-ridden and growth-stagnant," it added.

Moreover, the study found out that pili farmers are generally poor and could not expand their area of cultivation since "vast tracts of land most suitable for the production of pili are constantly being converted to serve the recreational, residential, commercial, or even agricultural needs of the region," it added.

"Pili possesses the characteristics to become among our country's most valuable export commodity. Categorically, pili nuts can compete with cashew, almond and macadamia in terms of texture, taste, and extracted micronutrient yield. The Pili nut can be further processed into a variety of already known confectionaries, baked products and other delicacies…The nut has a high percentage of oil content ranging from 65 to 73 percent. Studies have shown that this oil is equal, if not superior, to olive oil in terms of taste, fatty acid composition and nutrient content. In fact, oil from Pili nut has 11.5 to 14 percent protein, comparable to the protein content of soybean," the study said.

I hope the city will not tolerate sidewalk vending like this anytime. This causes traffic congestion and a great risk to life and limbs to both vendors and pedestrians since they are occupying a portion of of the road or on sidewalks. In seasons like this, the city may be can designate specific area in downtown Naga where a more organized seasonal market can be set up.

This causes traffic congestion and a great risk to life and limbs to both vendors and pedestrians since they are occupying a portion of of the road or on sidewalks. In seasons like this, the city may be can designate specific area in downtown Naga where a more organized seasonal market can be set up.

i think they did already... i'm just not sure if they're using the spot for the "night market", i didn't pass by that area yesterday. i'll try to check it out today and see if it's still the same scenario. if it does.. i think it will be like that until tomorrow, just maybe.

Opps the Hi-way project of GMA named after the late DBM Sec.Boncodin its is projected to cut travel time from Tabaco and Malinao to Iriga by almost hafl an hour this will connect i guess the already finished Gov.F Alfelor Hi-way that travers from Buhi to Hanawan Ocampo.

Hybrid rice farmers turn in impressive yields
MANILA, Philippines - Twenty hybrid rice farmers from Nueva Ecija, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan, Isabela, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Zamboanga del Sur, North Cotabato, Camarines Sur and Oriental and Occidental Mindoro have scored unprecedented records in rice production never before achieved by any farmers planting the traditional or inbred rice variety.

Their average production per hectare using the SL-8H hybrid rice seeds is 250 cavans. Highest was 345.6 cavans produced last year’s dry cropping season by Severino Payumo, a 69-year-old farmer of barangay Biliran in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.

Payumo broke the record of 345 cavans per hectare harvested in 2009 by lady farmer Aida Badong of San Nicolas, Camarines Sur.

Fernando Gabuyo, also of Nueva Ecija, has a record harvest of 335 cavans per hectare, followed by Freddie Dalisay of Occidental Mindoro with 291.40.

Severino Velasquez, another farmer from Nueva Ecija, is fifth in the list of the country’s top hybrid rice yielder with a record of 280.47 cavans per hectare.

The 15 other hybrid rice farmers are Ricardo Buenaventura (Nueva Ecija), 266.23 cavans per hectare; Alfredo Domingo (Isabela), 260; Ramil Jiminez (Occidental Mindoro), 258; Michael Viduya and Edward Importante (Occidental Mindoro), 250 and 236 cavans, respectively; Dominador Mariano (Tarlac), 256.97; Ronald Macalma (Ilocos Norte), 251; Leoncio Balasbas (Zamboanga del Sur), 217; Hilario Lacaste (Pangasinan). 214; Rogelio Penticostes (Pangasinan), 210; Marino Fugarata (North Cotabato), 210; Crispin Sunio (Cagayan), 208; Willie Dulay (Tarlac), 207; Gerardo Cantos (Oriental Mindoro), 206; and Feliciano Biagtan (Pangasinan), 205 cavans per hectare.http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=625701&publicationSubCategoryId=77
