was about to go home tonight after work when i saw a crowd looking at one direction..
head tilted up, eyes eagerly watching something on the electric billboard

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1141.snc4/148331_141657489219411_110525158999311_283991_6867610_n.jpg

closer look now.
each one of them comfortably sitting / leaning / standing the way they want it

this was the reason why they were so quiet and patiently watching the movie on the billboard. but because it's an Ad billboard there's an advertisement every after a few minutes. i saw there that it's a Friday Night Movie Time at the Plaza

while others were plainly watching the movie, others were busy eating Bulastog.
for only Php 10.00 you can now enjoy it with sauce or vinegar (spicy or not), cucumber, white onions, a little salt, turnips (singkamas) and a bottle of softdrink of your choice to quench your thirst. solve na!

Such a beauty! Hope it gets restored. Sayang.:ohno:

i'll try to drop by if dun ang route namin. Pretty sure dismantling would mean another project or new management will takeover. Not sure what color ginagamit ng Ayala for construction. blue din nah?same with SM.

Ayala doesn't use blue fences. As per my observation, they use any colored fence, but they eventually put different tarps with the mall's name including their mall's tagline or something, just like this..

Calabanga - planting is fun

PAG-ATAMAN KANG MGA BAKAWAN (mangrove). magrove trees make good firewood/ charcoal and it think this has been partly the reason for the destruction of mangroves.

learned from our ecology & field biology class in college that these mangrove forests in brackish waters and estuaries in coastal areas serve as nurseries for fish and other sea creatures. so one can imagine the domino effect when these mangroves are destroyed!

6 to 7 flights a day would mean 42 to 49 flights a week. CamSur has indeed soared very high from where it was before... :okay:

there was only PAL before and when PAL had problems Asian Spirit served the Naga route, then the old Air Philippines.

the competition among airlines has also reduced rates, making flying much more affordable these days.

Ocampo, Cam Sur

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4706/picture262v.jpg (http://img87.imageshack.us/i/picture262v.jpg/)

the white bird perched on the carabao lends a very rural feel.

4 times a week na palan talaga. garo namamati ko na magkakaka Naga - Boracay VV naman sa sunod. people who go to Bora love the sea and CamSur is also blessed with many beautiful beaches, ang kaipuhan lang pagayunon pa ang facilities kang mga resorts ta digdi sa CamSur, at least Gota Village Resort offers the same kind or may vary at a lesser degree just like of Bora's

hoping, too, that the WNPMPH (Naga-Caticlan) route is revived by early 2011. this used to be a seasonal (summer, i suppose) route for Seair. staff of an airline in Pili mentioned baka iya na nanggad ang sunod.

Governor LRay is pushing for WNPMPH just as he has pushed hard -- and successfully! -- for the Naga- Cebu route revival.

John and Priscilla mark calendar for wedding
http://www.mb.com.ph/sites/default/files/jp_10.jpg

MANILA, Philippines - John Estrada and longtime girlfriend, former Miss Earth 2004 Priscilla Meirelles, have decided on a wedding date: Feb. 26, 2011.

This came after their announcement early this year that John and Priscilla plan to have their wedding early 2011. The couple wants to have a beach wedding. “Dream wedding kasi ni Priscilla [ang beach wedding kaya] it's going to be a beach wedding,” John told ABS-CBN in January.

Their choices include the beaches of Palawan, Camsur and Boracay; however, they said that they haven’t picked a particular venue yet.

They added that the event would be an intimate gathering wherein only families and close friends are invited.

The entourage, according to John, will include showbiz friends Anjo Yllana, Richard Gomez and Willie Revillame, while TV5 big boss Manny Pangilinan will be one of their ninongs. It was also revealed that Priscilla’s family would fly all the way from Brazil for the wedding.

Their honeymoon would have to wait, though. “John will be busy with some projects [next year],” Priscilla was quoted on Ricky Lo’s “Funfare,” Nov. 9.

John and Priscilla, who have been together for more than three years now, are close to each other’s families. “I’m close to John’s children, but I don’t want them to call me Tita; mas maganda kung Ate na lang,” Priscilla said.

John had also already introduced his fiancée to his former wife, actress-TV host Janice de Belen.http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/286974/john-and-priscilla-mark-calendar-wedding

This bridge will become very useful if the access road to the highway is reconstructed to make it wider to accommodate more traffic and elevated to prevent flooding on Mabolo side. Anybody knows if ever this is already in the pipeline?

Student Leaders, US Embassy Advisor Exchange views on US-RP VFA, Eco-political Relations

Some thirty-five student leaders of Ateneo de Naga University met Joy Yamamoto, American Embassy political advisor, in a roundtable discussion on November 8 at the Knowledge for Development Center, O`Brien Library.

The said students represented student organizations such as the Supreme Student Government, Remontados Debate Society, Liga ng mga Estudyante sa Agham Pampulitika and The Pillars Publicati on.

In Yamamoto`s itinerary in Bicol, the US Embassy in Manila chose ADNU considering the embassy`s “long and fruitful relations with the Ateneos.”

For more than an hour, the students and Yamamoto tackled various matters surrounding RP and US bilateral relation s. Some dominant issues in the discussion were the Visiting Forces Agreement, the economic and political influences of US on Filipinos.

At the end of the discussion, Yamamoto expressed her gratitude to ADNU and Academic Vice President Dr. Rebecca C. Torres for warmly welcoming her in the University and for allowing her to have interaction with the students. She said she was impressed by the participants` awareness and perspectives articulately expressed regarding RP-US ties.

The roundtable discussion was organized by the Office of Student Affairs upon request by the US Embassy in Manila.

Dugong Atenista Donors Recount Experiences

Dugong Atenista Donors Recount Experiences,
Urge Others to `Love, Bleed, Let Live` Once More on November 30

The Ignatian Spirituality-inspired theme “I am loved. I give blood.” became the spirit that moved the July 31 Dugong Atenista-Ignaciana campaign for blood donors. It also summarized the experiences of the blood donors who attended a thanksgiving and experience-processing session conducted by program implementer Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

The latest Dugong Atenista bloodletting activity had 200 donors, breaking the record in December 2008 (188). It also recorded the highest number of donors in one setting by a private institution in Bicol, according to ADNU program partner Bicol Medical Center (BMC).

In the processing session facilitated by OSA, the experiences of the blood donors were deepened, their motivations checked.

To save a life by giving a part of oneself was the most common motivation for the donors. This was also articulated by Dugong Atenista regular donor Manuel Sambo, Media Studies Laboratory custodian. “I am a blood donor; I save lives,” he said, echoing the popular tagline of BMC`s blood services program.

Similarly, University Treasurer Ramon Nonito Ayo, shared that his awareness of the importance of blood donation motivated him to donate blood. He recounted the first time he donated blood to his inaanak who had dengue fever, an experience which inspired him to make regular blood donation a personal pledge. He described how good it feels knowing that he forms part of the recipients through the blood which now flow into their veins.

Political Science senior student John Eduard Alejo explained that he donated out of unconditional love for others. He said that he does not expect even for a “Thank you” from those who may benefit from the blood extracted from him.

Aside from charity, Alex Pilapil, DACA Laboratory custodian, pointed out the benefit of regularly donating blood for him. He said that he has been encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle so that he could be qualified the next time he donates blood.

Katherine Tormes of BMC affirmed this statement as one of the advantages of blood donation. For a donor to be qualified, she explained that one must have stable blood pressure, in the right weight, and free from illnesses and sexually transmitted diseases.

Many student-donors shared that the first challenge for them was to overcome the fear of needle or the pain that it would take during the blood extraction.

For instance, Gil Andru O. Abrazado, a Nursing student, had to put off his plan to donate blood in December 2007 because his fear of needle. However, his desire to participate in Dugong Atenista outgrew his phobia the next semester when he successfully donated blood for the first time. Now a four-time donor, he wrote in his reflection paper that he would not mind experiencing the pain again and again because he believes that “there is always someone in need, so there is always a reason to bleed.”

On a similar note, Mary Ann I. Santos, a Nursing student, wrote that the little “pain that one would feel with the prick of a needle is nothing compared to the fulfillment the donation will give.”

Of the 200 July 31 donors, 78 percent or 155 were students. The non-student sectors also posted significant increase in their number, namely: office staff, 17; faculty, 9; administrators, 4; and alumni and non-alumni, 15. All the alumni-donors were blood donors when they were students.

Fifty-five percent or 110 of the donors have donated in Dugong Atenista at least once in previous years, while 90 percent or 90 bled for the first time. OSA interpreted the first figure as affirmation that the program has already developed a pool of regular donors. In fact, in the exit registration, most of the donors expressed willingness to donate blood in November this year. The rise in the number of first time donors (compared to 76 last time), OSA explained, is a success indicator of the program campaign`s effectiveness in developing positive public knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards blood donation, stressing on its importance and safety.

According to 100 students, they represented some 33 student organizations. Among the top donor-organizations include: Youth for Christ (9), Ateneo Eagles for Environment, Inc. (7), Association of Nursing Students (6), Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (6), Gabay Scholars, Ateneo Catechetical Instructions League (5), Chaplaincy Student Volunteers (5) and Red Cross Youth (5). The Red Cross Youth was also a new partner of OSA in the campaign.

The processing session also became an opportunity for OSA and the BMC to give recognition to various groups and personalities who have helped promote the program for almost four years now. The College of Nursing, represented by its dean, Dr. Ma. Clara Ll. Rubino, received the Dugong Atenista Service Award. The College has been helping in the promotion of the program and the actual bloodletting activities through the clinical instructors and the Donor Care or Nursing student volunteers.

On November 30, OSA brings back the DUGONG ATENISTA in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier. It urges the University community – students, teachers, staff and alumni - and friends of Ateneo to LOVE, BLEED, LET LIVE ONCE MORE!

The November 30 Dugong Atenista activity will be held at the Xavier Hall from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. Pre-register now at OSA.

A Piece of Good News

Camarines Sur division retained the overall championship in the recently concluded 2010 Regional Secondary Schools Press Conference (RSSPC) held in Guinobatan, Albay. Albay was initially declared overall champion with 49 points and Camarines Sur first runner-up with 48 points. But we complained because the photojournalist from Partido State University was the real second placer, not the one mentioned during the awarding. So Camarines Sur got additional four points for a total of 52 points!

Hmmm, mention ko na rin na runner-up ako sa outstanding school paper adviser search hehehe.

TOUCH FOR WORDS
November 11, 2010

Jose Jason L Chancoco
http://hagbayon.wordpress.com

Some writers are as harsh on their bodies as they are harsh on their critics and enemies. If not researching on their material, they sit all day or all night working on a manuscript as if it they are monks on an altar. Some even forgo bath for days just to finish the work. But I would hardly qualify as the hardnosed type. I would work on something slowly but deliberately. Research, then turn-around-time, then research again. When I was working on my book, I had to make sure everything was in place. It took a lot of time to finish, lots of energy spent.

Outside of this “turn-around-time,” the writer’s life could also be stressful. You have to earn a living, or if you are a student, you have to study. And in a country like the Philippines, most people think that poets and writers are weird. Just as you have to contend with eccentric fellow writers, you have to deal with non-writers or worse, non-readers. Practically, nobody understands you. And this could take a toll on your stress-level.

Massage therapy methinks, has become more writerly. I heard from a fellow Bikol writer that a certain spa here in Naga is frequented by named authors. Last year, after we sat as panelists for a writers’ workshop, we proceeded to such a place. We enjoyed the sauna and the touch therapy by the massage practitioners. I thought to myself, a therapist is in a way also performing poetry or art. It’s a supernatural and cosmic experience to interact through touch in a manner that would transcend to the soul—soothing it. Touch becomes language, and to be more awkwardly graphic about it, touch becomes tongue and the body, the ether.

And just as poetry involves poetics, touch therapy involves culture. Name a place and culture, and chances are they have their own version. The Bicol region here in the Philippines is popular for its parahilot in Magarao, Camarines Sur. The place is teeming with sprain experts and their knowledge is transferred from generation to generation like folk wisdom or oral lore. I came to know of a man named Ligid and he was a master. The first time I visited him was when I was in my early teens, after a karate spar mate gave me a good back kick. I also gave him a roundhouse kick and we both fell down. It was a simultaneous strike but I was in a disadvantaged position so I got hurt. Ligid held my injured side and did some rolfing and other handworks for a few minutes, all the while telling me almost everything that comes into his head, from birds to the latest news. Then he let go of me and said: “Habo ko na kayan.” (I don’t want that anymore). Afterwards, I felt better and a few days after, the pain was gone.

Of course the Magarao sprain experts are more intense than your usual shiatsu practitioner. The former deals with real pain, while the latter with stress-induced muscle spasms. Although one is not barred from availing of the services of the former for relaxation purposes. But you need not take a bath after the treatment, or else its efficacy would be compromised.

Therapist or not, it pays to have a little massage trick in one’s sleeves. It could get useful when a female writer-friend would get so stressed after a writers’ workshop or after working on a manuscript. And you just happen to be near.

Jason Chancoco is one of Bikol's youngest poets/ writers in the Bikol literary block. He writes in English, Filipino, Bikol-Naga and Bikol-Rinconada and his works have been published. He wrote his undergraduate thesis in literature in Bikol-Naga.

[and speaking of Magarao's touch: according to a friend, Magarao's hilot center located near the municipal hall is now fully operational.

Luis G Dato
Baao's Poet

a sample of Dato's poetry:

THE CITY

Here in the grass grows not longer
The eye to soothe, tired feet to cool –
For hills are blocks and masonry,
For lake exiguous swimming pool.

There are no haunts – around the corner
Death gasps in screeching brakes
Or uns on wheels – the giddy crowd
All momentary wakes.

On every curve cat-like one sees
Blend of the common and the strange
No dream, no dream, but streets and noise
And the mobility of change.

The city is a city, always new,
Fountain of endless, bubbling youth
Far to the night – at dawn a woman
Minus her paint, and old forsooth.

Stolen Future

This Filipino painter is using his artwork to express his distress over nuclear and chemical technologies. He believes that the chemical industry has been neglectful in spewing its pollutants and affecting the health of the populations of the world. The presence of chemicals degrade the environment and cause climate change, irreversible damage to the nervous system, brain development, vital organs such as kidney, pancreas, liver and reproductive system disruption. He explains: "The nurturers of the next generation are in a precarious state. Every breathe they take is compromised by pollutants without their consent.

CBSUA Masteral Students Clean-up Beach

Masteral students enrolled at the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Calabanga rolled their sleeves for a day of community service.

Mostly teachers from the state schools in the municipality, they went out to the nearby shoreline for a beach clean-up. All are pursuing masteral studies but met together in the environmental governance class for the first semester of 2010-2011.

As these teachers were currently immersed in environmental science subject their excursion out of the classroom and into the open beach shows their support and concern for a clean environment.

Their shout out was “Help keep this beach clean” boldly printed on a placard now standing solitary by the beach.

It was a clear example of supporting the progress of the community even through it was the simple act of beach clean-up. But their concerted action was actually a huge example for others to follow.

Seen at the clean-up drive were mentors Helen Ramos, Ms. Shalima, Ms. Noime, Mr. Danilo Campil, Mr. Encinares, and many more.

---------
Editor’s additional Notes:
It must have been a satisfying and self fulfilling experience for the many teachers that joined the beach clean up party. A way of giving back what is due to Mother Earth although the effort may not be enough to do a major work that needs finance and support from the right sector.

Whatever you do,don't throw plastics and non biodegradable trash on waterways and the beach.
Marianne missed to note that the teachers found a lot of garbage which should have been recycled and put away in proper trash disposal process. But maybe, beach visitors were just unmindful of the harm and hazard (non biodegradable) trash will do to the precarious environment and the sea.

Beach clean up in some western countries are being done on a regular and on-going basis. Students and community organizations join hands for the project completion.

But look! Other than the garbage, sand and sea waves, they also had a good glimpse of the mighty Isarog.

Mount Isarog occupies the eastern border of Calabanga.
Added facts: The municipal territory of Calabanga has eleven barangays bordering 29.0 kilometers of San Miguel bay shoreline.

In 1998 the first ever search for the Best Coastal Management Programs was conducted from October 1997 to September 1998. Seventeen coastal municipalities around the Philippines were nominated and Calabanga was included in the shortlisted nominees.

Also nominated were Bicol towns of Pasacao (Cam Sur), Prieto Diaz (Sorsogon) and Tabaco (Albay).

Calabanga and Pasacao emerged winners in the category “not externally assisted.” Cbanga360(dot)Net will make a separate post on this in future issues.

GMA seeks ban on sale of shark's fin soup
MANILA, Philippines – The days of the delicious shark’s fin soup are numbered – that is if a bill filed by Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo becomes law.

House Bill 174, filed by the former president and her son Diosdado, representative of Camarines Sur’s second district, seeks to conserve and protect sharks and stingrays by banning the selling of their by-products, including fins.

It would prohibit any person or corporation from exploiting sharks and stingrays and their habitats by killing, destroying, selling, purchasing, possessing, transporting, and exporting these endangered species.

Even the accidental wounding or killing of these species in the course of catching other fish or species would be unlawful.

If sharks and rays are accidentally caught, they should be released immediately unharmed into the sea.

The bill also prohibits dumping of waste materials harmful to sharks and rays.

“It is important to note that the human appetite for shark’s fin soup and meat has led to the collapse of the shark and ray population, considering that these species are particularly vulnerable because they grow slowly and live as long as 100 years, hence they have low reproductive rates and low natural mortality, making them prone to extinction,” the Arroyos said.

They said the government should recognize the significant contributions of sharks and rays in the promotion of Philippine ecotourism and that these predators of the sea help maintain the ecological balance in the marine environment.

“Over the years, these marine species are in danger of disappearing from our waters. The population of these sharks and rays declined significantly due to overfishing, human consumption, habitat destruction, pollution due to mercury poisoning and the impact of climate change,” they said.

Under the Arroyos’ bill, violators face six to 12 years imprisonment and fines ranging from P100,000 to P1 million.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) would issue the guidelines for the enforcement of the proposed ban.

On the other hand, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Philippine Council for Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD) would help the DENR identify the habitats and feeding grounds of sharks and rays so these could be declared protected areas.

Yes, Camarines Sur ang division ko!
Albay ang home province ko!
Nakakaloka yan!

Congrats, Gerry for a job well done :okay:

A Celebration of Hope
MANILA, Philippines – COME April 28 to May 1, 2010, a Bicol Celebration of Hope with Will Graham will be held at the Pili Freedom Stadium in Pili, Camarines Sur. This event is simply sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with thousands and thousands of peoples in a series of four evangelistic meetings. It is reaching out to others with love to spread the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.

* * *

Rev. William Franklin Graham IV (Will) is the third generation of Grahams to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ under the banner of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). Will is the grandson of Billy Graham and the oldest son of Franklin Graham.

Rev. Will Graham who started his evangelistic ministry in 2006 has done Celebrations in Australia, India, Africa, as well as North America. He is looking forward to his first effort in the Philippines.

Will and his wife Kendra have two daughters, Christine Jane (CJ) and Rachel Austin, and a son, William Franklin Graham V.

* * *

It will be recalled that in 1977, Billy Graham was invited to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of Manila, Philippines. The political climate at that time was very delicate.

It was the height of the cold war. Thirty-one years later, the churches invited Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, to share the same message of hope with a new generation through the Metro Manila Franklin Graham Festival that took place at Rizal Park in February, 2006. Over 325,000 people attended the Festival in Mania with Franklin Graham. The children’s rally alone had 83,000 participate. From this effort a bond was established between leaders in Manila and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

* * *

Now, in an effort to reach the Bicol Region with the same message of hope, local churches in Bicol and Manila are uniting together to hold the Bicol Celebration of Hope with Will Graham (BCHWG). The body of Christ in Bicol Region is gearing up to implement this program of “personal evangelism on a massive scale” which will hopefully transform the lives of churches and people.

* * *

When Rev. Billy Graham had his ministry, he referred to his events as “Crusades,” Rev. Franklin Graham titled his – “Festivals” and now Rev. Will Graham has “Celebrations.” All of these events are the same; the only difference is the one preaching. “A rose by any other name is still a rose.”

* * *

Rev. Chad Hammond, Associate Director of Asian Affairs of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, was in town last week to coordinate the preparatory activities of the various working committees of the Bicol Celebration of Hope with Will Graham based in Metro Manila and Bicol.

* * *

The Bicol Celebration is a free event open to the general public. For more information contact the Celebration Office at 054-472-1579 or write to: 2/F KGP Bldg. Magsaysay Ave., Naga City, Camarines Sur.

This column continues to give out copies of the Holy Bible for free to those who cannot afford to buy their own copies. If interested, please send your letter-request to Ms. Nelly Favis-Villafuerte, 5th Floor, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Roxas, Blvd., Manila. Kindly mention if it is the Tagalog, English, Cebuano, or Ilocano version that is preferred.

Army's Medical Mission Benefits 1,500 People in CamSur
http://www.voxbikol.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/400xY/MedicalMissionAFP_0.jpg

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, PILI, Camarines Sur Nov 13, 2010–More than a thousand people received health care services from a medical and dental mission participated by the Army in Bicol, a military official said here today.

Captain Raul Sasuca, the Medical Officer of the 9th Infantry Division said that a total of 1,555 residents availed of the free medical and dental services during the medical and dental mission participated by the Philippine Army in the past two days (10-11 November) held in SM City Naga City.

Sasuca said that his team has also visited various communities in Camsur to provide medical and medical assistance to poor people.

“We are very glad to be part of this medical mission because this is part of the 9th ID’s community service here in the Bicol Region. We have communities in far-flung areas which do not have ready access to health facilities and through this medical mission they can avail of free medical checkup and medicines which many of them cannot afford,” said Sasuca.

Ms Tina Sumayao, the Public Relations Officer of the SM City Naga, said that the project was part of the corporate social responsibility of the SM Foundation Inc.

“Aware about the health needs of the poor people in the countryside, we coordinated with various agencies and NGOs to make this project a reality,” Sumayao said.

The other partners during the medical mission include the Philippine National Red Cross, Provincial Health Office of Camarines Sur, Bicol Medical Center, DSWD Naga City and the 9th ID Press Corps.http://www.voxbikol.com/blog/armys-medical-mission-benefits-1500-people-camsur

My defense against poverty
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/3265/ent3.jpg

Education plays a very important role in my life. I consider it my primary armor against every battle I have to go through in life. One of my happiest moments was when I graduated cum laude with the degree Bachelor of Communication Arts major in Journalism.

Aside from my mother, who has supported me in my studies, there is another person who made my dream of finishing a college degree possible. LA-based Filipino lawyer Francis Padua Papica funded my entire college education. He is also a Bicolano who grew up in Goa, Camarines Sur. He started the Francis Padua Papica Foundation, Inc. (FPPFI) in 1997 to encourage and acknowledge the outstanding individual achievements of young Filipino men and women.

The turn of events indeed favored me and my dream of finishing college. FPPFI has invitations in almost all public schools in Camarines Sur. Our principal, Salvacion Asis, received the invitation and they selected poor but deserving students from our school. My teacher, Mr. George Hugo, told me that I was recommended to be one of the candidates for the scholarship and that I had to pass an exam and an interview for them to assess my capacity. I was interviewed by lawyer Fe Buelva, who handles the operation of the foundation in Bicol, during the selection process. The foundation only chose one scholar for each district and I was the lucky one chosen from the fourth district. They gave me a full scholarship for four years. In return, I had to maintain high grades and participate in the foundation activities like leadership trainings and book distribution activities.

I admire the dedication of lawyer Francis to help poor children get a good college education. He shows his willingness to reach out to as many young individuals as he can and do something good for them. Without his foundation, it would be almost impossible for me to go to college. But because God gave him a very good heart, I was able to get the education I have always wanted. My whole life changed because of the help from his foundation. I would not have learned to dream bigger dreams if I was not given the chance to get a college education. I know I owe him a lot. I have learned to call him Daddy because he has become like a father to me. He, with the help of his friends lawyer Gigi Berberabe, Dickson Berberabe and Ted Pastrana was instrumental in pushing me to overcome my dethronement issue. He offered help without asking anything in return. I am very lucky to have known someone like lawyer Francis Papica. His heart is so genuine and I know he will never get tired of helping more students reach their dreams.

I hope many people will also open opportunities for young individuals to get educated. Scholarship grants are really very helpful for poor children who have the eagerness to study but do not have the resources to go to school. Just like me, I know more Filipinos will be able to earn college degrees through scholarship programs. Similar to the advocacy of the FPPFI, Cream Silk has also been offering scholarships to Filipina college students taking up courses like Engineering and Architecture through its Women Empowerment Program. The program started in 2008 and more people are being added to their list of beneficiaries. I hope it will continue to transform more lives of Filipina women and make them empowered to overcome hard battles in life.

It is great to know that there are people gifted with golden hearts. I know we need more individuals like them to have a better society. If more children will have access to good education then our society will have more professionals in the coming years. I have always believed that it is not very important to have a lot of money because it can vanish in just a blink of an eye. But education is very precious because it cannot be taken away from us and we will carry it wherever we go. I may not be gifted with a lot of riches but I am very happy because I know I have earned a degree and I am blessed with people who are also blessed.

The Films Young Filmmakers Make

BLOG | NOVEMBER 14, 2010 - 2:24AM | BY TITO GENOVA VALIENTE

Last Saturday, we have just finished the deliberation for the awards to be given for the 2010 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival. This is an annual event where the cable channel gives a million peso each to selected young filmmakers. Out of some 100 entries, seven qualified this year.

It is interesting how the sample gives so much about the obsession and interests of this generation. On the material, Joey Javier Reyes, a member of the jury, noted how the directors opted to work on the techniques – the form – of their works instead of the content. The films had lots of style and were highly referential.

The directors, it appear, were bent on impressing the audience with the approaches that came from video games, MTVs and animation, Hollywood genre.

Away from the surface and into the depth of what they are trying to say, the contents of the films this year reveal what, perhaps, this generation has been bothered with. Almost all of the films are about families, their dysfunction and their disappearance. Even in a dark film like “Dagim” by Joaquin Pedro Valdez, the tale begins with the father not coming home. In this film which deals with all kinds of vanishing, the two children set out to the mountains and find there a new family, or at least a brotherhood. Extreme to the end, the film shows an entire village disappearing. Militarization deals darkness to the village in this film

In “Astro Mayabang,” the unusual hero goes home to a family where the father is always unconscious, drunk, and the mother is battered, drinking and smoking while praying the rosary. In “Tsardyer,” the Tausug family loses the mother. The boy then finds himself going to the mountains where he sees his uncle he so admires. The boy then starts working for the Abu Sayyaf as a “tsardyer,” meaning he is tasked with charging the cellphones being used by the group out there in the forest. The boy runs to the nearest home with electricity in order to do this.

As in the previous years, I am a bit saddened by the fact that there are no entries using Bikol language in this batch. Two finalists in this year’s Cinema One Originals are given this label “regional” film. It is an exoticizing name but one that makes films in non-Pilipino language special.

The film “Astro Mayabang” comes from Pampanga and is directed by Jason Paul Laxamana. The subtitles do not isolate the film because it stars Aaron Villaflor who has quite a following. The film itself is engaging because it tells the story of this young man who is very literal about his nationalism: he wears the flag around his body by way of a jacket bearing the flag design. He is proud of his being a Filipino even if it means putting down another nation. The nationalist is a racist, and we are not even aware of it.

My favorite in the batch is a film from Cebu called “Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria Kirschbaum” (The Dream of Eleuteria Kirschbaum). Shot on extended takes, with the camera trailing Terya with her father, mother, sister, and cousin, the film is about Terya leaving home for Manila, and from there to Germany. She is going to marry Hans, a person she never sees yet. She is leaving not only her home but also her boyfriend. The action is simply that, but the film engages the audience with what I believe to be the best ensemble performance ever. On location in Olango island, a sanctuary from birds flying in from the northern hemisphere, the film adeptly manipulates the metaphor of freedom in birds that are either flying away or fleeing the island. While not winning Best Film, the Cebuano work by Remton Siega Zuasola gets the Jury Prize.

I dream of sitting as member of Jury again but this time reviewing a film in Bikolnon, in all the splendors of its variations.

The author, a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, sat as member of Jury in this year’s Cinema One Originals Digital Film festival with Joey Javier Reyes, acclaimed film director, Joji Alonzo, film producer, and Roger Garcia, Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited.

what is being celebrated / commemorated on EID AL ADHA? haba ng bakasyon dito one week halos....

From previous post (wikipedia)

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎ ‘Īdu l-’Aḍḥā) or "Eid-u'z-Zuha" "Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram (by God's command).

In traditional or agrarian settings, each family would sacrifice a domestic animal, such as a cow, sheep, goat, or camel, by slaughter.

The meat would then be divided into three equal parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor & needy.

House readies red carpet for Pacquiao
MANILA, Philippines – House of Representatives colleagues of world boxing legend, Rep. Manny Pacquiao, will be rolling out the red carpet when the new world super welterweight champion returns for duty at the session hall.

One of Pacquiao’s solon-buddy said he would personally ask the House leadership to pay the Filipino ring hero his salaries despite his absences from session due to his preparations and rest for his match against Mexican Antonio Margarito.

“Whether he won or not, Congressman Pacquiao should not be marked absent because what he has done for our country, no congressman could ever match. I hope Speaker Belmonte will heed my call,” said Rep. Salvio Fortuno of Camarines Sur.

Like Fortuno, House members who decided to stay in the country and content themselves watching Pacquiao on pay-per-view live screening were jubilant at Pacquiao’s newest feat.

Reps. Elmer Panotes (Lakas-Kampi, Camarines Norte) and Bernadette Herrera (Bagong Henerasyon party-list) said what was most notable about Pacquiao’s victory was not the way he overwhelmed Margarito.

“Even in the ring, Manny showed a high level of sportsmanship and gentleness when he signaled the referee to stop the fight as soon as it became clear that Margarito has become helpless and could not fight squarely,” said Panotes.

“What Manny demonstrated in the last two rounds of the fight – the way he threw light punches against a gravely injured opponent – could be recorded in boxing history as among the most vivid display of sportsmanship,” said Herrera.

In a statement, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito said: “I join the nation in celebrating Manny Pacquiao’s victory. He has once again made us all Filipinos proud by dominating Antonio Margarito in today’s WBC super welterweight boxing bout making him the world’s greatest boxer of all time.”

Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian said: “Once again, he made all Filipinos proud… He brought us back to the world map.”

Majority bloc stalwart Rep. Dan Fernandez (LP, Laguna) said the “David and Goliath” match is one for the books.

“No matter what they say, he’s the greatest fighter that this world has ever produced. He got the power, speed, and intelligence like what David showed when he conquered Goliath,” Fernandez said.

Also reacting to Pacquiao’s victory, Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara (LDP, Aurora) said: “Once again he made us very proud for making history as the only boxer in the world with eight world titles. He showed us not only the finest skills of a boxer but also the finest attitude of a true gentleman.”

Villar lauds Pacquiao

Senator Manny Villar, meanwhile, congratulated Pacquiao for his convincing win.

“Once again, the country stands proud of displaying to the world the undying Filipino spirit as shown by the winning punches of world boxing sensation and our very own, Rep. Manny Pacquiao.

“Pacquiao is now the only living fighter in history to win eight titles in various weight divisions.

“Indeed, he's a fighting machine that brought honor not for himself but for the millions of Filipinos all over the world.

“I, therefore, join our countrymen in congratulating Pacquiao in his latest conquest. Today, we rooted as one nation, we cheered under one flag and we celebrated at the global stage our being a Filipino,” said Villar, president of the Nacionalista Party.

Seat in peace panel

The Philippine Army, recognizing how Pacquiao manages to unite Filipinos each time he has a match, said Sunday it will recommend that he be named to the government peace panel.

Col. Antonio Parlade Jr., Army spokesman, expressed confidence that Pacquiao, who is a reservist with Philippine Army’s 15th Ready Reserve Division, can help in the government’s quest for lasting peace, especially in the countryside. 7th Pagsurat Bikol to Honor Vincentian Schools' Founders
7th Premio Arejola awards rites on December

Preparations are underway for the 7th Juliana Arejola-Fajardo Workshop sa Pagsurat-Bikol, Bicol’s only annual creative writing workshop. Traditionally held in the summer months, the write-shop is finally scheduled on November 27 and 28 at the Our Lady’s Hall of the St. Louise de Marillac School (SLMS) in Pili, Camarines Sur.

To honor of the 350th death anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac, founders of the Pauline order of priests and the Daughters of Charity respectively, this year’s Pagsurat Bikol workshop is open only to the student writers and literature teachers of the Vincentian schools in Camarines Sur, Pili’s SLMS and the Universidad de Santa Isabel in Naga City.

Workshop convener Carlos A. Arejola will conduct a creative non-fiction seminar during the two-day write-shop, a reprise of the workshop he conducted for the Department of Education Camarines Sur Division Office sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in August this year.

Arejola, who is sitting for a second 3-year term in the National Committee for Literary Arts, was a panelist at the recent Ateneo de Manila National Writers’ Workshop and is scheduled to read a paper at the Writing in Luzon panel of the 53rd Philippine PEN Confab in Cebu City on December.

Also slated for a last quarter staging is the 7th Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon, previously held during the September Peńafrancia festivities. This year’s awards rites is slated on the last week of December in the charming garden fronting the Museo de Caceres in the historic grounds of the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary in Naga City.

Top entries in the poetry, fiction, drama, children’s fiction, essay categories and the newly-launched screenplay for short films category, along with winners of the Premio Bibiano Sabino Bikol Book Award, the Rawit-dawit para ki Ina, and the Writer of the Year will be honored at the December awards rites. The Premio Arejola is widely regarded as the region’s premiere literary prize.http://www.voxbikol.com/article/7th-pagsurat-bikol-honor-vincentian-schools-founders

“It is important to note that the human appetite for shark’s fin soup and meat has led to the collapse of the shark and ray population considering that these species are particularly vulnerable because they grow slowly and live as long as 100 years, hence, they have low reproductive rates and low natural mortality making them prone to extinction," paliwanag sa panukala ni Gng Arroyo.

“It is important to note that the human appetite for shark’s fin soup and meat has led to the collapse of the shark and ray population considering that these species are particularly vulnerable because they grow slowly and live as long as 100 years, hence, they have low reproductive rates and low natural mortality making them prone to extinction," paliwanag niya.

“Over the years, these marine species are in danger of disappearing from ours waters. The population of these sharks and rays declined significantly due to over fishing, human consumption, habitat destruction, pollution due to mercury poisoning and the impact of climate change," patuloy ni Arroyo.

- http://www.gmanews.tv/story/205902/pagbebenta-ng-sharks-fin-soup-nais-ipagbawal-ni-gng-arroyo

congratulations to your daughter (and to the proud parents!).
good to know Naga is hosting another big event.

our good ol' airport is small but clean and well-maintained, inside-out. i hope the terminal bldg is expanded (along with the runway!!). the souvenir shop-canteens are cramped.

Yes.

There is a need to expand the Terminal Building
although the waiting area is just enough for 70 passengers

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/H20Hotel031.jpg?t=1289784322

waiting for the 70- seater turboprop planes
which is only booked up to 75% of the capacity
due to the short runway...

http://i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af218/rrntcaceres/H20Hotel027.jpg?t=1289784432

With the volume of tourists coming to CamSur
the airport runway needs to be extended
to accommodate bigger planes.

If I'm not mistaken, it would be hosted by Mr. Elmer Caseles, a former ABS- CBN TV Patrol Naga Anchor.

That was before when ABS- CBN was still producing TV Patrol Legazpi form their relay station in Albay.

They merged their local programs and their broadcast iin Naga when GMA 7 opened their regional station here.

every barangay or purok seems to have a little chapel- not only in buhi but in many other places as well, both here and in other provinces. shows the religiosity of our people.

the permanent concrete tower used for Easter Sunday's Enkwentro (Salubong in the Tagalog regions) seems to be a feature unique to Bikol. in other places only makeshift structures are made- and demolished after the event.

Bulaong is Region V, Luzon PMO No 1. mathematician

By Jesha Aina Noble

Things could not get even better. Once again, John Reinier Bulaong of Learning Group 4218 has proven himself a Math wizard by ranking first among all Luzon examinees in the recently concluded Philippine Math Olympiad (PMO) by Ateneo de Manila University held last October 23, 2010.

“I was so shocked,” said John, when asked about the news. In the regular Monday assembly held at the beginning of the week, Bulaong, uninformed of his feat, was given recognition with the Principal, Mr. Gregorio Abonal, citing his achievement to the student body.

According to Mr. Willington Niebres, the seniors’ team coach, the test was composed of 30 items varying from easy, average and difficult levels. Examinees from various participating public and private schools were given two hours to accomplish it.

This is yet another marvel that the school should pride itself in. Other Atenean delegates were Lawrence Ibarrientos and Ian Villaverde for the second year level; Lheanne Begino Garel Paredes and Camille Trinidad for the third year level; and Casey Calara and Art Cerio for fourth year level.

nice work, pao. copies of this should be prominently displayed in key places in the city. through all the city's material and physical progress we must not forget our kasaraditan.

uplifting the quality of human life is of prime importance. :)

in addressing a worldwide gathering of our alumni in the early 80s, Pedro Arrupe,S.J., our superior general told the graduates of our Jesuit institutions:

Today our prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ... men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce.

this address popularized the catchphrase men and women for others at the ateneo.

Eid al adha is a feast of sacrifice commemorating Abraham's (Ibrahim) willingness to sacrifice his son to God (Allah).

Where will you be tomorrow? We'll be in Sharjah tomorrow, probably to spend overnight at the beach in a tent if we could not find affordable hotel around the area. The kids would like to go to the beach and I initially planned a day at a Dubai beach but a cousin in Sharjah invited us to come over. We'll be there with friends.

Use your Animahenasyon
By BRYAN B. GARCIA
November 14, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – It’s difficult to believe that a lifeless subject can move fluidly, carry sensibilities, and draw such strong emotions. With craftsmanship, vision, and imagination, one can create movement out of playful colors, motion out of graded shades, and life out of simple lines.

It’s precisely this illusion that the art of animation focuses on. As technical as it may get when it comes to rendering and production, the craft’s essence still relies on the audience’s imagination to take them from the comfort of their homes to fictional worlds unhindered by earthly laws.

From simple flip books to modern age three-dimensional cinematography, animation has tied itself with mainstream entertainment through the years of its evolution. As evidence of the medium’s growing popularity, many animated film characters have become household names and have reached superstar status much like real life Hollywood actors.

The wonders of animation have attracted some of the most talented artists to lend their skills and contribute to this fast growing industry. Rising among this influx of new talents are those whose works are included in some of the box-office animation hits.

To unite the local arts and entertainment community in highlighting the global impact of the animation industry, the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) has set up the annual Philippine Animation Festival called Animahenasyon. The fourth installment of Animahenasyon will be held in the city of Naga in Camarines Sur, the first time this event will be held outside Metro Manila.

As the industry continues to grow, holding the event outside Manila is part of ACPI’s thrust towards perpetuating the craft on the regional level. “Holding Animahenasyon in Naga City represents a step forward in tapping the huge potential of Filipino animators beyond Metro Manila,” says ACPI Executive Director Michael Kho Lim. “There is a lot of untapped and unrecognized talent out there, and it’s time for them to be given due recognition and support,” he adds.

Naga City, which has produced some of the most brilliant minds in local animation is considered as a major animation hub in the country. As evidence of this, Ateneo de Naga University, which is among the first institutions to offer an undergraduate major in digital illustration and animation, will host and co-present the event from November 23 to 26.

Much like its previous versions, this year’s Animahenasyon will be a competition of feature animated works from budding and professional animators from all over the country. With 68 entries from Metro Manila, 71 entries from other regions like Naga City, and some international representatives from Switzerland, Singapore, and Iran, this year’s competition has attracted almost 150 entries from over 500 participants.

The festivities will also give a chance for aspiring animators to meet some of the big names in the industry in various conferences and workshops. These exercises aim to explore areas in animation such as education, production, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Aside from discussions and screenings, the event will also pay homage to one of the veterans in local animation. Roque Federizon Lee, better known as Roxlee, will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his groundbreaking works in cartoons and independent animation.

His unadulterated perspectives, unique vision, and flamboyant imagination have made Roxlee into an icon in independent filmmaking and animation with innovative works like The Great Smoke (1983) and Juan Gapang (1986). With his 12 Commandments of Filmmaking, Roxlee captures the essence of what a filmmaker should be.

The Animahenasyon Festival sets the stage for Filipino animators to exhibit their talents to the rest of the world, providing a glimpse of the great things Filipinos can achieve. With a concerted effort, local talents may receive global recognition, turning dreams into realities through the magic of animation.

Use your Animahenasyon
By BRYAN B. GARCIA
November 14, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – It’s difficult to believe that a lifeless subject can move fluidly, carry sensibilities, and draw such strong emotions. With craftsmanship, vision, and imagination, one can create movement out of playful colors, motion out of graded shades, and life out of simple lines.
.....................

With 68 entries from Metro Manila, 71 entries from other regions like Naga City, and some international representatives from Switzerland, Singapore, and Iran, this year’s competition has attracted almost 150 entries from over 500 participants.

animators animate naga and camsur in less than about a week! as mentioned in a previous article our kababayan Roxlee who happens to be one of local animation's pioneers wishes that Naga become the country's animation capital.

why not?
